More Goodies This Month Because
We’ve Turned 7!
W
e thought it’d be easier (and pun-nier) to wake you lot up when September ends but why waste a good chunk of valuable time? And in line with saying that ‘time is of the essence’, our team were hard at work here at our HQ to put together our September issue, packed with a whole lot more goodies than the last one. Between pages 34 – 39 and hot off the race tracks, we’ve got our cover story on Natasha Nur Ida Adam Seatter, Malaysia’s very own ‘racing queen’ and Asia’s fastest female formula driver. She tells us what it’s like to have chosen racing as her career path whilst stealing the podium (and the limelight) from her male counterparts. Unorthodox but also, suh-weet! And while we’re on the topic of unorthodox, we also managed to cinch a few ‘oneon-one’s’ with artists of a different kind. First (pages 46- 48), we stole Cambodian-born airbrush artist Paul away for a little chat on his work. Imagine our surprise when we discovered not only the good work that he produced, but also the fact that Paul taught himself the airbrush technique by watching YouTube videos. True story! We also spoke to Kenji Chai aka Blackfryday, the champ of all graffiti artists. As the law would have it, graffiti has always been considered an illicit form of expression but believe it or not, in this modern age, it’s considered an appreciated form of art. And appreciate, we did, when Kenji tirelessly told us about his trials and tribulations of being a graffiti artist in Malaysia (pages 52 – 53). Because we know that this month and the following months to come will be a trying time for all you troopers, we’ve included some handy student tips to get you through them. Trying to stay alert when your finals are looming and you’ve about a tonne of assignment deadlines to meet? The tips are all on page 50. If you’re thinking of furthering your studies overseas or completing your twinning programme in a foreign university, well, take your consideration to page 65. Last but not least, Campus Plus magazine also recently celebrated its 7th birthday! Seven whole years. Imagine that! And no, we’re not planning on stopping anytime soon. You can count on that. Yours in cheerful unweirdness,
Lainey

ith the great invention of coloured contact lenses, now freely available online and everywhere, we can obtain them without prescriptions at a very affordable rate. Besides that, with the recent hype of the Korean beauty trend, having bigger and more noticeable eyes are the ‘in’ thing now. Thus, wearing lenses that would help the enlargement of our iris is now a common fashion. However, what happens when this eye-popping fashion trend starts causing discomfort to your precious eyes? The painful truth is that it may lead to blindness and disease. Cosmetic lens, decorative lens, circle lens, and geo lens are all familiar names for coloured contact lenses. Since contraband lenses are cheap and easily available to the public, many articles have been published strewn with concerns over the dangers of non-prescription coloured lenses, especially when this fad is popular among teenagers. Young consumers purchase them with no prior knowledge nor guidance on how to take proper care for the contacts and no knowledge on the dangers of sharing them with their friends. There’s really no harm in wanting to enhance your features with these coloured lenses, they work just like any clear contact lenses. However, they should be handled with good, basic hygiene care as infections are bound to happen if they’re not handled with clean hands, disinfected with proper solutions, and kept in clean lens cases. It’s highly recommended that coloured contact users should only use them for a maximum of six

hours as these ‘big-eyed contact lenses’ cover a portion of the whites of the eyes which increases the risk of oxygen deprivation to the eyes. The main problem is with the fake or low quality lenses, they’re usually produced with easy fade dye and are unsterile during the packaging process which would make the contacts unsafe. This means that infections will happen as soon as they’re placed in the eyes. The risk of serious ocular problems like corneal scarring and blindness is 12 times greater when buying lenses from an unknown supplier rather than those who buy from a known supplier. For a first time contact lens wearer, it’s really important to check with an optician if your eyes are fit to wear contact lenses as poorly fitted lenses may cause corneal abrasion due to the friction between the lens and eye. We should also always be safe to only buy from company that sells FDA-cleared or approved contact lenses. If eye irritation does occur after wearing contact lenses, do seek immediate care as infections and ulcers develop very quickly, they can become very serious in less than 24 hours. Sample The Surprise Within
The Lilac Box We understand that some ladies love the look and feel of luxurious products on them but are at the same time worried about splurging without knowing if it’s suitable for their skin or hair. Here’s an awesome solution for you!
W
hen it comes to premium brands in a box, The Lilac Box is the expert. And the co-founders, Lim Chuang Yik, Teng Ky-Gan and Rudi Cheow are here to share their story with us (and you)! CAMPUS+: When did your first box debut and how did this company start? THE LILAC BOX: Our first box debuted in February 2013. It started off when Chuang Yik was eavesdropping on two girls in Chicago and they were talking about Birch Box. And he thought, “What a wonderful thing to do – surprising girls with a box every month”. C+: So how does The Lilac Box work, really? TLB: Subscribers pay to get a box full of samples. We call them Blind Dates; just like a regular blind date, you spend time with the sample, and if there’s chemistry, you go on a Second Date where you purchase a full size item, go for a workshop or basically anything that makes you continue the relationship. C+: What was the inspiration and vision behind The Lilac Box?
TLB: We play matchmaker between the consumer and the brand. Our vision is that the consumer is able to experience the brand. Not just knowing the brand, but really knowing the story behind it, its rich legacy etc. Our role is basically the mediator between brands and consumer. C+: What is your definition of beauty? TLB: As clichéd as it sounds, beauty is skin deep. Beauty comes from confidence and self-assurance. Having said that, there’s no harm doing all we can to look our best. Beauty rituals are a good ‘self-indulgence’, and it is very personal. Which is why The Lilac Box seeks to match the best and most suitable beauty and cosmetic products to each person.
‘Our first box debuted in February 2013. It started off when Chuang Yik was eavesdropping on two girls in Chicago and they were talking about Birch Box. And he thought, “What a wonderful thing to do – surprising girls with a box every month”’
C+: What do you think ladies these days are not doing enough for their skin? TLB: There’s no right or wrong to us. It’s a matter of doing what fits you. For example, often women buy the most expensive or fantastic product, only to find that it doesn’t suit them. That would be ‘wrong’ in that sense. Hence it is important to get products that really suit you (your skin tone for instance) and not be caught up with marketing hype. CAMPUS PLUS |

‘The first thing that I love about fall fashion trends is layering. It gives me the opportunity to bring out all my summer, spring and autumn clothing and just mix and match it all up. Layering a maroon sweater over a white button-up tee and pair it with a black skinny jeans and Isabel Marant high top sneakers and over layering my outfit with a thick Burberry leather jacket, and there you’ve got a cozy and perfect outfit for fall. Chic and slick! For me, everything goes perfectly with an outer wear. It doesn’t matter what type of outer wear, be it a trench coat or a flair cape, they just have the ability to flourish the whole entire outfit. I’d wear a long white silky maxi dress and buttoned myself up with a thick wool trench coat and braid my hair to aside. Pretty digging it’
‘Summer is all year long in Malaysia, I think it’s always best to dress appropriately according to our weather here. Since simple dark colour combinations are one of the Fall 2013 trends, I’ve matched a black oversized top with a grey pants for this outfit. I’ve always loved the comfort of wearing oversized tops especially during hot weather. To complement the outfit, I opted for layering and since the trend of shirt on waist is back, I tied my denim shirt on my waist to create a better visual of layering overall. Denim could always be so versatile in any style, blending into any combination just perfectly. Another element that shouldn’t be missed in this ensemble is the unconventional prints on my top, with pop out colours creating a more statement attraction to enhance the overall black/grey look. With leather and boots as an important trend this season, I’ve chosen my leather boots to create a more rugged look. As for accessories, minimalistic is always my best choice to avoid overwhelming the entire outfit’
‘Instead of an oversized coat, I’ve a blazer which is comparatively much more common to style up my outfit. I’ve opted for a simple black cropped top to be under it, so that the whole outfit will not look heavy on the upper part. And with the Malaysian weather, I believe I could show off some skin under the blazer in this outfit. To pair the blazer and cropped top, I put on a navy blue jeans printed legging to tone down the formality by the blazer, making it look more casual. As for my accessories for this outfit, I’ve got on a gold feathery double chain necklace to add some details to my plain top simply because I’m a fan of feathery accessory and I don’t want to overdo it by pairing my outfit with a strong accessory. In brief, there are so many things that we can mix and match for this Fall fashion trend, but the best look is the one that makes you feel comfortable in your own skin’

This fall season is all about biker babes and being masculinesexy! We’re working it by being sporty and edgy, wrapped up in shiny leather outfits, embracing classic prints and fabrics for a chic-professional touch, oversizing our coats, and finally, topping the entire ensemble off with statement-making bold furs. Rawr!
As the temperature decreases for fall, the weather in Malaysia remains the same. That doesn’t mean that we can’t rock the runway trends of oversized squares, hiking boots, and shades of green. evel-headed. Determined. Pretty. Natasha Nur Ida Adam Seatter is dead keen on making racing cars her career. The 20-year-old Natasha, daughter of a former top driver in the Asia Classic Car Challenge and veteran Stewart, has been burning tyres in the sport since her debut in kart and formula car racing in 2005. “I started off with waterskiing. I loved the adrenalin rush. So my father introduced me to go-karting.” After she started making heads turn in the Asian karting competitions, Natasha caught the attention of Petronas for its Young Drivers Programme. She won a scholarship to take part in the Petronas Formula Xperience (PFX) training programme, and defeated her male counterparts taking podium first in all four of the graduating PFX races. Natasha was dubbed ‘Rookie of the Year’. In 2010, she secured a spot in the Petronas Mofaz Racing Team and competed as the first female racer ever in the Formula BMW Asia Pacific Series. As Natasha’s reputation grew, so did her successes. Natasha is a professional touring car driver now, as another route towards becoming a Formula 1 driver. In April, she was selected by one of the top Porsche teams ‘Team StarChase’ to drive their Cup cars in the Shanghai F1 support event. She finished just outside the top ten, notable as it was her first time behind the wheel of this formidable machine, and she was up against a very experienced field including worldclass WTC and DTM drivers. “Asia’s fastest female formula driver” has also been featured in the Spring/Summer edition of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia Annual magazine as one of the top 20 best dressed women. The Kuala Lumpur-born ‘racing queen’, as billed by the press, says “if you want to do something, just put your mind to it, and go for it.” “I saw a video about achieving your dream. It’s about how you were young and wanted to be a doctor, or wore a cape to become like Superman. But the older you get, you tend to lose that belief in yourself, that you can rule the world.

‘If you can give someone one piece of advice to be successful in social media, what would it be? Learn as much as you can, work hard, build relationships and have the right attitude’

AMPUS+: What is it exactly you do? JS: I help brands become successful on social media by using this platform to meet their business objectives. I need to understand the brand’s business objectives and challenges, then I research and recommend a strategy to suit their needs. I need to understand the available social media platforms and technologies, world issues, human psychology, marketing, advertising and communications theories. C+: Please tell me a little about yourself. JS: I’ve had a lot of fun and picked up a lot of “street smarts”. I participated in sports and college activities, socialised a lot and studied hard enough to graduate.
AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF BEING IN FINANCE AND BANKING, I REALISED I WAS BORED AND DIDN’T ENJOY IT ANYMORE. I LEFT BANKING AND MY EXBOSS CALLED TO SEE IF I WANTED TO JOIN IN A SOCIAL MEDIA INITIATIVE FOR THE GROUP, SO ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER
C+: How did you end up in social media? JS: After several years of being in finance and banking, I realised I was bored and didn’t enjoy it anymore. I left banking and my ex-boss called to see if I wanted to join in a social media initiative for the group, so one thing led to another. C+: What is the best part about your job? JS: I get to work with different brands across different industries, so I get a good understanding of different business verticals. The job is rarely boring. It’s also a way for me to not get stuck behind a desk all day! C+: How does a graduate get a social media position, say like yours? JS: For social media, most graduates start as an Account Executive (if it’s in a media agency) or an Executive (if it’s in a corporate brand). The role will usually encompass Community Management and Content Creation work.
OPPOSITE PAGE | SOCIAL MEDIA KALEIDESCOPE: A DIGITAL COMPOSITE OF JAGDISH WITHIN A SOCIAL MEDIA LANDSCAPE OF ICONS
C+: What skill and attitude does anyone need in this career line? JS: The most important skill is communication! You need to be good in writing as social media involves creating content. If you can take great pictures and shoot awesome videos, even better! Being analytical will take you a long way as well as you will work with a lot of data concerning your communities on social media.
reer path in this industry? JS: Social media is the season’s flavour and I expect this industry to grow even more. Just today I saw a job ad for ‘Head of Social Media’ with a bank paying RM15,000 a month. Wow! As mobile, technology and the Internet become more accessible, demand will continue to grow. In fact, many agencies and brands can’t find the talent to fill positions in social media. C+: What do you see are the demands of fresh graduates today when entering the work force? JS: Pay is the first thing most graduates think about. Some even have rules like “I must leave at 5.30 because my dad picks me up”. Being overly demanding is bad – graduates need to be humble and flexible (even if you graduated from Harvard!). At the end of it, a degree cannot replace the work experience needed to succeed. You can be demanding once you have done well for yourself. My advice is – don’t be demanding in your first job. C+: What would you look for in new employees or interns? JS: Besides a good command of languages, I would look for personality traits as a degree is never a good indicator of future success. Soft skills are more important in the end! C+: If you can give someone one piece of advice to be successful in social media, what would it be? JS: Learn as much as you can, work hard, build relationships and have the right attitude. I always use the power of the mind – as Descartes said, ‘I think therefore I am’. It’s a powerful technique which works!
‘READ! PEOPLE DON’T SEEM TO READ ENOUGH THESE DAYS. FINALLY, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE. SOCIAL MEDIA IS A TOOL IN YOUR SHED, NOT THE ONLY MEANS TO AN END’

SOCIAL NETWORK INVESTIGATIONS ILLUSTRATIONS BY KABUL ZAM
WITH THE RISE IN SOCIAL NETWORKING, YOU CAN NOW FIND OUT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING AT THE CLICK OF A CURSOR. FROM CONSUMERS TO COMPANIES, THE SKY’S THE LIMIT WHEN IT COMES TO ONLINE INVESTIGATIONS
44
| CAMPUS PLUS
A
ll of us have done a little bit of social network sleuthing or investigation online – from the types of mobile phones to buy to finding the best discounts on facial massages in town. When we are satisfied with our own findings, we would buy the products or services from the stores or online. For companies, on one hand, social network sleuthing is a means to find out on what we as a consumer are saying about their products and services. Are we saying anything positive or negative? Are we saying them at forums, blogs or social networking websites? Should I as a company respond to these allegations (if any), grouses or compliments? This is an ongoing process for the companies. Let’s face it, what we say as a consumer about a product or service matters as it can make or break a company. The social network sleuthing starts when an individual or company collects all kinds of data online from websites to social networking websites. The individual or company then analyses the data, which gives them an in-depth picture about a particular product, based on the observations online. For companies, both positive and negative comments are recorded so that they can respond to them accordingly. As a consumer, based on the feedback, you may not be buying a particular skin care product from a popular company, for example, as your decision has been influenced by the negative feedback of other online users or buyers. In fact, you may be buying an unknown skin care product, due to positive feedback from other online users. The outcome of social network sleuthing could work either way. If we look at the company’s perspective, it may need to work harder to convince you on buying, in this case, its skin care product. The company may need to develop a better online marketing strategy, for example. As a consumer, besides getting the products or services after a thorough in-
‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK SLEUTHING STARTS WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL OR COMPANY COLLECTS ALL KINDS OF DATA ONLINE... THE INDIVIDUAL OR COMPANY THEN ANALYSES THE DATA, WHICH GIVES THEM AN IN-DEPTH PICTURE ABOUT A PARTICULAR PRODUCT’
vestigation, how else could social network sleuthing help you? If done properly, you can land yourself a proper job. All you need, is a little online investigation. You can essentially get an “inside” look at a particular company by doing a proper market research, according to a blog by Simply Hired, a company that operates job search engines in 24 countries. For example, do the job seekers know any of the company’s customers? If not, check out the testimonials on the company’s website. Also, find out the company’s strengths and weaknesses identified by its customers via its website, social network websites such as Facebook, and so forth. Simply Hired says if possible, become a customer yourself. Contact the customer service centre and evaluate your firsthand experience with them. You may even develop a potential improvement plan for the company to, for example, improve its customer service.
You can also assess the company’s corporate culture and practices from your interaction with them. Post a comment on the company’s social media website and see what type of response you receive. Simply Hired also encourages job seekers to use the LinkedIn profiles of the current employees to expand on their knowledge of company initiatives. You can even use these resources to make initial contact with some of those executives prior to sending in your resume. This kind of contacts may help you develop a casual contact into a job opportunity. Don’t forget to join online professional groups as you can get “insider” information about a particular company. When you apply for a job, you can be certain that the company is sleuthing on you on the Internet. Therefore, be prepared by doing the same before you head into the interview. Good luck! ince the inception of airbrush technology, commercial artists and illustrators realised airbrushes allowed them to create highly rendered images and a high level of realism. Techniques tend to be split into two areas; firstly, using the airbrush in combination with cut stencils or items held freehand to block in controlled manner the flow of paint onto whatever it is they are painting on. Secondly, airbrushes can also be used to apply temporary airbrush tattoos (TATs). Often, the resulting design mirrors the look of a permanent tattoo, minus any pain or discomfort. TATs might only last a week, but today, the best inks can last up to two weeks or longer. Even in the automotive industry, airbrushes are used to paint murals, graphics, and other artworks on cars, motorcycles, buses, and anything else with wheels and an engine. This art form has been around since the 1950’s, but it has seen an increase in popularity thanks to TV shows such as American Chopper and Rides. The cost to hire a professional artist will vary from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on location, skill level, and reputation. Campus Plus asks Cambodian-born Hun Sopheak a.k.a. Paul taught himself airbrush techniques by watching YouTube videos. He also has a particular interest towards Khmer art which originates from Cambodia. “Just give me a sketchbook and everything comes naturally. That’s on a personal note. As for the rest, my artwork depends on my customer’s requests,” he said. His talent has taken him to countries such as The Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and Cambodia. He has received jobs for motor shows, painting designs requested by clients on cars, and other promotional events where he uses his airbrush painting skills on models. His next job at the time this interview was written will take him to Gibraltar in Europe. 48

What’s Your Take On
Sex Before Marriage? Our question of the month is for the students of UTAR, Sungai Long. Here’s what four of them had to say...
‘It’s definitely something that happens a lot but I wouldn’t condone it. Mostly because it’s against my religion. Although, if my future husband is someone who’s already had sex in the past, it’s not that big of a deal to me. A relationship shouldn’t be based on sex’

7 Ways To Successfully Stay Alert
During Finals
It’s crunch time and you know what that means – completing that pile of assignments and studying for your finals on top of staying alert during classes. The question is, how to do this? Here are some handy tips:
‘GET DOWN AND GIVE ME 20!’
1
Exercise can easily wake a person up and by that, we don’t mean hitting the gym for hours. Get up and take a
short walk or get down to do some push-ups. As soon as you get your blood pumping, you’d feel more alert. Better yet, hit the shower after your short workout stint. Instant wakeup call! KEEP HYDRATED
2
Dehydration can make you sleepy. It can also make you fall sick. Drink a lot of water to make sure that your
body is hydrated. Ice cold water, especially, is bound to wake you up and at the same time, provide your body with enough fluids to stave off illnesses. 50

‘A majority of people are practicing it, but it’s not socially acceptable especially here in Malaysia. We live in a society that’s very conservative and sex before marriage could only mean trouble. Also, it’s not an issue for me if the person I’m going to marry is not a virgin anymore. Everyone has different pasts and I won’t hold it against him. Besides, marriage should be based on love and commitment. Not just how good a person is in bed’
‘I think it’s fine as long as you do it with protection. There could be a situation where you get into a marriage and realise that you’re not sexually attracted/compatible with your partner. So sex before marriage is just a way of finding that out. But it’s important to do it safely’
‘I have mixed feelings on this matter. It does have negative consequences but everybody does it for different reasons. Generally, I think whoever is doing it should be thoughtful and responsible. Do it with protection. As for my future partner, I don’t mind if she has done it in the past as long as she’s upfront and honest to me about it’

TURN OFF ALL COMMUNICATION
FEED YOUR BRAIN
The Internet (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, instant messengers) is all fun but not when you’re trying to cram your studies. Try not to fiddle with the Internet or your smartphone. This also means no playing games and definitely no chatting.
It’s okay to snack, but do it healthily. Eat protein-rich foods such as sandwiches or keep your blood sugar up by eating fruits. In fact, eating any fruit is better than snacking on artificially-sweetened junk food. Avoid caffeine too, if possible, because while it might seem like a good idea, you might also crash badly after.
3
REMAIN UNCOMFORTABLE Don’t work in bed or on a couch or on the floor. Rid your study area of soft pillows and stay away from places with dim lights. If possible, find a place with strong lighting and a table or a desk. Also, try not to slump. Sitting up straight and maintaining a good posture will help you concentrate better.
4
5
BLAST THAT TUNE
ALLOW YOURSELF TO NAP
Pulling an all-nighter can seriously strain your brain, especially if you’re doing a lot of reading. Give it rest and listen to some music. If at any time you feel your eyelids grow heavy and threaten to close on you, blast a tune. Sing out loud or bop along, if you must!
Knowing that the sun is almost up and that you have an early lecture to attend means you’re allowed to at least nap for a short while. Even so, head for the couch and not the bed. Make sure your alarm is set at its loudest and if possible, appoint a person to wake you up at a certain time.

odern graffiti has won success for its artists today compared to the 1970’s when it was just defacement of public property. What used to be an illicit form of art has now grown to be treasures of human creativity. There are literally thousands of photographs in every major city of every country of the world that captures the passion and energy of the artists who express themselves on a concrete wall or the side of a subway car. When it began, graffiti was viewed as vandalism, and the mischief of gang members who ’tag’ walls to mark their territory with distinctive gang symbols. While it is still frowned on in some countries today, people have begun to appreciate graffiti. It can transform a dreary wall of an apartment building into a gallery of guerrilla art. When Malaysians started tagging walls around Kuala Lumpur, the public reaction was similar to what happened in the United States. While some parts of the Malaysian capital city are still ‘painted’ with a fair share of ugly graffiti, genuine street art is allowed as a form of expression and beautification. The famous (or infamous) Klang river which walls were once drab, grey, and lifeless is now an awesome display of colours, designs, and creations of talented local graffiti artists. Street art is celebrated along the river through an urban event called the KUL SIGN festival. Since 2010, the event is a collaboration between the artists and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The strong encouragement of local authorities allows street artists, local and international, the freedom and creativity to work their magic. In an interview with Campus Plus, Kenji Chai a.k.a. Blackfryday tells his tales of trials and tribulations as a street artist in Malaysia. His passage into the world of street art began in back alleys and abandoned buildings. Those places were undisturbed by authorities and the buildings were his canvases. “I’ve been caught a few times. The policemen appeared out of nowhere and caught me red-handed. But there was not even so much as a slap on the wrist when they saw my artwork. I guess they were impressed by it and advised me to get permission next time,” Kenji said, who has been in the street art scene for 4 years.
But street artists in Amsterdam, for example, have been chased by police who would actually open fire. Kenji’s work is also found in commercial jobs for brands such as UMobile, BlackBerry, DiGi, Tiger Beer, Hotlink, and more. He has also worked for Gempak magazine, the first Malay language info-comics magazine which features news on games, animation, effect-laden movies, toys, and events. He has also been commissioned to design murals. “Drawing graffiti is not as simple as it sounds. It’s similar to a girl putting on make-up. The wall must be in an ideal condition and must be prepped with foundation before you could begin drawing your design,” he said. He advises: “Don’t do something you are good at simply for money. Do it simply because you love doing what you’re good at. Be it drawing, music, writing or anything else for that matter. And don’t give up so easily. Criticism and rejection will come but look at the positive remarks you get as well and keep going. Being degil (a Malay word for stubborn) means being passionate.” What was once frowned upon is now an appreciated form of art. The progressive changes in society have now allowed many of those who are rich in talent to spray the city with colours that define human ingenuity and creativity.

SOFT ROCK BAND RUTH MEETS ASHTON PHOTOS BY KAMIL HAZIQ
Check out the Ruth Meets Ashton single, On My Knees, at www.facebook.com/RuthMeetsAshton
‘THE MOMENT YOU FORGET WHAT YOU PLAY FOR AND ARE ONLY IN IT FOR MONEY, THE LACK OF PASSION WILL SHOW AND CAUSE YOUR BAND TO DETERIORATE’
I
t’s a clever coincidence that Ruth Meets Ashton members Eddryll, Mas, and Joshua came up with their band’s name just by combining the names of their instruments. There’s Joshua’s violin named Ruth, Mas’ piano called Meets, and Eddryll’s guitar dubbed Ashton. And what a fitting name for a band that sings soothing ballads. Typically, a band would start its stories with how the first two members met before they formed. But Ruth Meets Ashton began on a bigger note. Eddryll tells us it all began at the HELP University College campus when a group was started in 2011 for those who shared the same appreciation for music. The group grew to about 20 members until one decided to write a tribute song about an earthquake that hit Japan that year. It was then Ruth Meets Ashton got around to writing its first song. But the song was never completed and the band moved on, performing mostly at charity events, carnivals, and prom nights. Earlier this year, it hit the stage of a Battle Of The Bands competition organised by TuneTalk and came in third place. The only soft-rock band amid those loud rockers! Its major influences are pretty diverse but that is what gives Ruth Meets Ashton its unique sound. Eddryll gets his inspiration from YouTube stars like David Choi and AJ Rafael. Mas listens to Korean pop ballads and pianist John Schmidt for his piano techniques. Joshua’s violin prowess comes from listening to bands like Yellow Card or One Republic. Even though the band is still in its early stages, it is already considering producing an EP which, eventually, will turn into a full-fledged album. Jamming sessions are at the music room of the campus at Pusat Bandar Damansara. The band does its recording at a proper studio, such as when it laid down the track and first single, On My Knees. As a college band, its biggest challenge is in the limitations of time. But as a band, the members must find common
ground, which is another challenge. “Every band member may have their own goals. That could turn into a problem for any band unless members find common ground or a compromise,” said Eddryll. Ask any band for a funny or embarrassing moment it has had on stage and there will definitely be an answer. In the case of Ruth Meets Ashton, it once had no microphone stands for a performance. So two stage crew members held their microphones for the band members as they performed. To aspiring college bands, Ruth Meets Ashton say (from its two years of experience performing as a band) to keep playing music for music. “The moment you forget what you play for and are only in it for money, the lack of passion will show and cause your band to deteriorate,” commented Eddryll. All serious music talk aside, these Psychology Major boys are normal people. They’re into comic superheroes like Hawkeye, Batman, The Flash, and Captain America. They also play basketball, are movie buffs, and Joshua likes to look up random facts on the Internet to pass his time. SEPT 2013 | CAMPUS PLUS |

Jay Z Rapper extraordinaire still hits the right notes on Magna Carta Holy Grail with the help of some very talented artistes
I
n the year of great big returns by some of the world’s most popular artistes, rapper Jay Z maintains his swag with the release of his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. The album opens with its first track, Holy Grail, which conveniently features his good friend and an artiste who also recently had his great big comeback, Justin Timberlake. Judging by the magic that the duo put together for the track, it’s clear that Jay Z hasn’t lost his touch. We also love the wonders that he worked with producers TImbaland, Pharrell, and J-Roc. With songs like Heaven, Oceans, and BBC, we can’t help but question, “What took you so long, Jay Z”? On that note, let’s just say that Magna Carta Holy Grail is an album that you’ll regret not picking up.

THE BOY & THE BROKEN MACHINE JOE BROOKS
At 26 years old, this independent artiste from Great Britain has a lot going for him. For starters, he’s a MySpace breakout singersongwriter with amazing vocals to boot. Let’s not forget that his debut album has previously scored high points with fans and new listeners alike. So, with the release of The Boy &The Broken Machine, acoustic lovers can only expect more ‘raw’ songs from the exhilarating performer. ’Til My Heart Stops Beating and Carousel are poised to win over more hearts from all over the world while Six String Soldier and The Island projects his clean, honest musical style. Our take? Joe Brooks is effortlessly soulful.

Tom Odell is your next generation brooding artiste, one who writes and sings songs about heartbreak. What sets in apart from other singer-songwriters is, however, his striking vocal style. So fragile, you’d want to reach out and give him a virtual hug – especially after you hear songs like Till I Lost. But Tom’s Long Way Down isn’t all tears and sadness. He also succeeds in engaging listeners with Hold Me and I Know. We wouldn’t recommend a listen if you’ve only recently got out of a relationship. Yes, it’s that heart wrenching.

Sexy Beat opens with the mind-blowingly funky track of the same name, a track produced by Primary and Zion.T. At first listen, it sounds like something that K-Pop idol boy group MBLAQ can take straight to the DJ decks because it’s all clubby. Refreshing for a fifth mini album, to say the least. The other catchy singles that followed e.g. Celebrate and Smoky Girl is testament to how MBLAQ has obviously matured and how their latest album will definitely do better than their previous ones – a track record that the group has yet to break. If Sexy Beat doesn’t get you up on your feet for at least a minute, well, we don’t know what else would!
For a rookie group, TS Entertainment’s K-Pop idol boy group has quite a sum of achievements tucked neatly under their belt. With a flair in epic hip-hop and R&B song-and-dance performances, it’s no wonder why B.A.P has since set the bar high for their peers (other rookie groups) since their debut in 2012. Recently, the group has released their first mini album, No Mercy and it hasn’t disappointed, as far as we’ve heard. Songs like Goodbye, especially, is a pop-rock ballad that has given B.A.P a true opportunity to display their powerful vocals. And you thought that K-Pop idol boy groups are nothing but just neon-coloured clothing, heavily mastered songs, and wellchoreographed dance moves. Think again.

Since her debut in 2012, Korean-American KPop solo singer Ailee has given fellow South Korean divas a run for their money. And by that, we mean she’s practically the Asian version of Beyonce, what with her rich vocal talent. Her second mini album A’s Doll House was released recently and it was almost impossible not to want to buy every single copy of it! The mini album opens with U&I, a lowsounding song that breaks away from the norm of most female idols’ musical style. Ailee’s impressive vocals is then followed by No No No, Rainy Day, and I’ll Be OK, songs that we’re thankful for not limiting her dynamic style. Put this one on repeat – we know we have.
Has it been two years since their first fulllength album? Does that explain then how fans went absolutely nuts when f(x)’s Pink Tape was finally released? This SM Entertainment K-Pop idol girl group sure has a lot going for them. Known for their diverse members throwing into the mix and non-girl-next-door image, f(x) continues to exceed expectations with their catchy title track, Rum Rum Pum Pum. Our personal favourites are also Kick and Airplane, followed by Goodbye Summer – the latter because it features D.O. of EXO-K. We know what you’re thinking – will f(x) continue to electrify with Pink Tape? Let’s just say that you wouldn’t even have time to catch your breath.

7 Things To Consider When Choosing
LOOK AT COUNTRIES NOT AS TOURISTS BUT AS STUDY DESTINATIONS A lot of places in the world sound like fun places to be in – but are those places conducive for furthering your education? For example, do you really need to go all the way to the US or does Singapore have all the facilities you need for your degree? Is it a must to go to Canada for your engineering studies or would enrolling in an Australian university suffice?
1
THINK RINGGIT & SEN
2
Find out everything you need to know about the fee structure of the university. Then, calculate how much you would need to study in the said foreign university. This includes fees, lodging, utilities, allowance, so on and so forth. Also, this would be a good time to find out if the university offers financial aid. HOW IS THE RESPECTIVE UNIVERSITY’S FACULTY AND INFRASTRUCTURE? It might differ slightly from country to country but foreign universities are usually of two kinds: city-based and campus. City universities are scattered through the city and equate to higher living expenses whereas campus universities provide a less costly environment as they are usually self-contained and located slightly away from the city.
3
feature
A Foreign University Choosing the right university is easier said than done, let alone choosing the right foreign university. Impending homesickness aside, being far away from home means you need to make wise decisions about picking a place that is worth investing money and time in. RECOGNITION & RANKING Obviously it’s super important to know the official recognition of the university on the global stage. Foreign universities, especially, are constantly assessed, graded, and ranked under a certain criteria – or two. Do your research for their rankings and find out where they stand.
4
COURSE CONTENT Your main purpose for studying in a foreign university, after all, should be because the university has the course or subjects you want to study. Check their availability as study content and syllabuses differ from university to university. Also, subjects are taught and studied differently in different universities so read the course content thoroughly before making your decision.
5
work in the area for students. You might or might not need it to earn extra pocket money. Furthermore, if you’re aware of the employment opportunities from the outset, it’d speed up your job search after graduation. TALK TO PEOPLE WITH REAL EXPERIENCES Get involved in the universities’ forums, post up your queries, and get in touch with the university’s alumni. Speaking to the university’s alumni or seniors will give you in-depth information about your shortlisted university. Otherwise, talk to the course directors or education consultants. VACATIONING AT KAPAS ISLAND
SEPTEMBER 2013
The white beaches of
Kapas Beckons Experience the pristine island getaway of Terengganu
I
f you ever plan to visit Kuala Terengganu, you may want to stop by the hidden gem that is Kapas island. The island is located about 5 kilometres from the small town of Marang, which is 24km away from Kuala Terengganu. The island is aptly named Kapas, which means cotton in Malay, as it refers to its trademark pure white beaches. The Marang jetty offers a free shuttle to and from the island. If you are driving there though, the jetty car park management charges RM7 a night. A healthy budget for the entire trip would be around RM500 a person, if you include petrol, tolls, and the island’s activities as well. land, it’s advisable to gather supplies from Marang first unless you don’t mind paying the island’s ‘good prices’. Get snacks, drinks, and perhaps some playing cards if you’re planning to burn the midnight oil with your friends over a game of poker or cho tai ti. ACCOMODATION No matter what you may have heard of Qimi Chalet, we suggest you spend your money for accommodation at another of the various chalets found on the island. Qimi Chalet may be the most popular lodging there but it is simply too expensive. Instead, head for Kapas Beach Chalet (KBC for short). The room rates there only go up to RM70 a night (but it has a 2-night minimum stay). If you’re in a large group, KBC has a dormitory-style unit which costs
‘Although not the most popular island on the east coast of Malaysia, Kapas does have a lot to offer’
from RM15 a night. There’s no air conditioning in the rooms but the nights can get pretty cold. Another backpacker’s lodge located on the far side of the island (you can walk there from KBC) is the Captain’s Longhouse which offers chalets at RM30 a night. This is more for travellers on a budget. ACTIVITIES Just head for the watersports counter on the beach and the attendant will take you on any of the activities – from snorkeling and turtle-watching, to island-hopping

where the nearby Gem Island offers the chance to see baby turtles and a hatchery. Or, laze on a deserted beach for some quiet me-time. At your request, the tour-guide will take you to a bat cave, a diving cliff, and even a surf spot. Surfing is great at Kapas island during the monsoon season! Although not the most popular island on the east coast of Malaysia, Kapas does have a lot to offer. We recommend a maximum of 3 days and 2 nights there. If you’re feeling the need for a long holiday to give your body and mind a rest, go all out and stay there for 5 days. You’ll come back re-energised! SEPT 2013 | CAMPUS PLUS |

DINING AT CHARGRILL EXPRESS PHOTOS BY KAMIL HAZIQ
All aboard the
Chargrill Express Healthy gastranomical delights for the discerning meat enthusiast

n a small corner lot in Publika, facing the main road (Jalan Dutamas 1) sits a restaurant that offers meat-lovers a healthy alternative. Everything on the Chargrill Express’ menu is cooked over a grill to ensure you are getting the best of chicken, lamb, and beef dishes – minus the oil and other health-hazardous stuff that comes with fried food. It may be difficult to locate at first so make your life easier by asking the concierge to direct you there. The shop is fitted with glass panes instead of being enclosed by concrete walls, so there is plenty of natural light during the day. A red and yellow colour scheme brightens the whole place, which psychologically instigates hunger in a person (well played Chargrill Express!). You may be spoilt for choice at Chargrill Express because there is a lot of variety when choosing either the chicken, lamb, or beef. For example, there are two choices of chicken which are unique. The Seasoned Chicken is stuffed with rice and seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. The chicken 68

is not dry at all and its skin is slightly crispy. The other variant would be the Portuguese Chicken. It has a more powerful flavour and mild spicy-ness. The Portuguese Chicken is marinated in Chargrill Express’ Portuguese marinade at least 24 hours before it’s placed on the grill. If you’re not looking for a whole chicken or beef steak meal, don’t fret. The restaurant prepares its food in other ways too. Try the Hot Chicken Roll which is essentially diced chicken wrapped in pita bread. The next option for meat would be Roasted Beef which comes with gravy that brings out the natural flavour of the beef. A meal here won’t be complete without its sides. You can choose rice, pasta salads, vegetable salads, french fries, potato wedges, fruit salads, and more. The sides can also be a meal itself. If you want to add a little spice of your own, the restaurant offers a range of sauces including Lemon & Herbs, Coconut Peri-Peri, Peri-Peri, Hot PeriPeri, and BBQ. As for beverages, it serves the usual carbonated
drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, 100 Plus, etc. But there is a special drink the restaurant plans to offer – a mix of mango, lime, and citrus. As to how it tastes, we’ll let you judge for yourself! Chargrill Express serves generous portions. If you are hungry for a big meal, this place deserves a sit-down.

PREVIEW OF LOST PLANET 3
SEPTEMBER 2013
Buckle Up And
Get Lost
BOOKSHELF
The latest offering in the Lost Planet series promises even more thrills and spills than its predecessors
The Intoxicating Magic Of
THE NIGHT CIRCUS
Meticulously-crafted and richly written, The Night Circus’ magically-gifted characters seem to jump out from the page at every turn
venue for Celia and Marco. Both are to duel in a series of complex tasks. While it sounds like a great idea to train these magically-gifted characters from a young age, the inevitable happens. Over time, Celia and Marco grow to know each other past the magic they’re capable of doing, and discover each other as real people. They dive headfirst into a haunting love without knowing that the challenge in which brought them together in the first place requires an end in which someone dies. Morgenstern scored high points for meticulously crafting The Night Circus. With every turn of the page, each vivid scene seemed to jump out at the reader. Each character comes to life in the world of make-believe, invoking the reader’s sense of sight and sound. The Night Circus was so richly written that it was hard to put down. Definitely one for the magic lover.
Morgenstern
Be prepared to clear out your social schedule when you pick this one up because, well, it’s safe to say that it’s as magical as the cover makes it out to be. The Night Circus opens with a prologue before telling a tale of a challenge between two magicians. One is a public performer named Hector Bowen aka Prospero while the other is simply introduced as ‘the man in the grey suit’. Obviously, they’re rivals, and they take their rivalry into the next generation – Hector Bowen’s six-year-old daughter Celia and the man in the grey suit’s pick, a nine-year-old orphan named Marco Alisdair. The challenge then becomes a reason for The Night Circus, a spectacular fairytale-like 70

Low End But Not
Low Rent Despite its position at the lowest rung of Nokia’s Lumia range of smartphones, here’s why the 520 is still the world’s top-selling Windows 8 handset...
T
he Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia’s fifth Windows 8 smartphone. It’s a phone which stands at the very bottom of the Lumia range, just below the Nokia Lumia 620. But, here’s something that may change your mind on whether you buy this low-end phone or not. The device is now the world’s top-selling Windows 8 handset thanks to its impressive specs and low price. Aside from sporting a generous 4 inch 480 by 800 display, the Lumia 520 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and 512MB of RAM. That may not sound like much, but the power matches the Lumia 620. Dimensions-wise, it’s a lot slimmer and lighter than the 620, at a fairly sleek 9.9mm and 124 grams. Now let’s talk about the favourite feature of any smartphone, the camera. The 520’s camera is a pretty basic 5MP camera on the back. It doesn’t have any flash and there’s no front camera at all, so video chats and self portraits are out. Admittedly, there aren’t many options on the camera. You can adjust the ISO, white balance, aspect ratio, exposure value, as well as choosing between several scene modes

‘The incredibly low price is a huge selling point for the Nokia Lumia 520. It also looks like a more expensive handset than it is, with a decent 4-inch screen and a stylish body that could lead someone to confuse it for the much more expensive Lumia 920. It has also got a respectable amount of power up its sleeves’
such as close-up, night, or sports. It’s quite basic stuff but with a price tag of RM599, don’t expect it to be a Lumia 920. To sum it all up, the incredibly low price is a huge selling point for the Nokia Lumia 520. It also looks like a more expensive handset than it is, with a decent 4-inch screen and a stylish body that could lead someone to confuse it for the much more expensive Lumia 920. It also has got a respectable amount of power up its sleeves. The 1GHz dual-core processor ensures that performance is generally pretty smooth. This might be the best entry-level Windows 8 handset that you can buy and certainly for the best value.

Super Smart DSLR
Camera Phone Boasting more megapixels than your standard DSLR camera, Nokia’s Lumia 1020 smartphone is worth the wait
F
innish phone maker Nokia is making its boldest move yet with the upcoming Lumia 1020 smartphone. A release date has not been set yet at the time this was written but that is not what caught our attention. What piqued our interest is the 41 megapixel PureView 808 (MP) camera on this device. No that’s not a typo error, we really said 41 megapixels. That is more MPs than your average DSLR cameras (which most only go just over 30MPs. Though you can take full 38-megapixel resolution photos, the images saved to the camera are actually a manageable 5MP. Aside from the monster of a camera it’s equipped with, the device stays its course on being a Windows 8 smartphone, has a 4.5 inch 1280 by 768 AMOLED display, and would probably kill all the cameras in your arsenal when it comes to image quality.
‘Though you can take full 38-megapixel resolution photos, the images saved to the camera are actually a manageable 5MP’
Fuji’s X-M1 is the third model in the company’s X range of interchangeable lens cameras, and it is the smallest and lightest compact system camera the manufacturer has produced to date. In fact, it’s a little smaller than the Fuji X20. The X-M1 has an X-trans CMOS sensor with 16.3 million effective pixels and is capable of matching a full-frame DSLR for image quality. Fuji has also included Wi-Fi technology for the first time in an Xseries camera so you can transfer images to your smartphone or tablet using the free Fujifilm camera app. Perhaps the only downside to this camera would be the lack of a viewfinder and touchscreen and limited digital filters, but these won’t put a student looking for a quality affordable camera off. Besides, doesn’t the classic design look good?
Seamless Sliding Slates Of Sony’s VAIO Duo 13 The VAIO Duo 13 is an all-new laptop/slate hybrid in Sony’s latest 2013 line-up. The unique ‘Surf Slider’ design allows for a quick and seamless transition between slate and keyboard modes. Sliding the screen back while in slate mode reveals a keyboard and a touch pad and returning it to its original position will put the device back in slate mode, favouring touch and pen manipulation. If that’s not technologically advanced enough for you, Sony has put in an 8MP camera that features the Exmor RS for PC image sensor which, for the first time, made it possible to tag text in photos taken of documents and blackboards. Now isn’t that something students from the 1980’s wish they could do. All that tech could be yours at a retail price of RM4,999

“THIS VARIANT COULD CHURN OUT MORE POWER INTO SPEED THAN ITS 6.8 LITRE V8 COUSIN. FOR ALL THAT POWER, IT’S ASTOUNDING THAT IT DOES NOT PRODUCE ANY LOCAL CO2 EMISSION”.
I
n more ways than one, a super car that doesn’t make a sound at 200km/h is unheard of. However, German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has come up with an amazing, silent, 751 horsepower speed machine. The SLS Coupe Electric Drive (ED) is the green cousin of the SLS AMG GT. First thing to point out is, the fact that this electric variant could churn out more power into speed than its 6.8 litre V8 cousin. For all that power, it’s astounding that it does not produce any local CO2 emission or even the slightest peep (let alone a roar) from the engine. In the right mode, the electric hyper car drives surprisingly well. There are three torque-vectoring settings that not only alter how much each electric motor brakes individual wheels to maintain traction out
of corners, but also how much power is sent to the wheel with the most grip. There is the comfort mode which makes the car feel like a slow-witted SLS, then there is the Sport + mode which turns the machine into a super-sharp sports car. Under-steer disappears completely, the car pivots around the middle and the ED comes alive. The only criticism on this car is the noise, or lack of. AMG has developed a fake engine noise that plays in the cabin but upon reaching high speeds, wind and tire noise drowns it out. It’s a minor complaint, but it’s the most common so we just had to write it here for the sake. Besides being one of the most impressive AMGs, what’s even more amazing is that you’ll actually be able to buy it, if you happen to have a spare RM1.7 million lying around. SEPT 2013 | CAMPUS PLUS |
