APU Celebrates Phan-tastic Multicultural Night

Celebrating Deepavali

In A Different Way iM4U (1 Malaysia for Youth), one of the most significant youth volunteer communities in Malaysia, celebrated Deepavali with the children from four orphanages in Klang. Approximately 145 children from the ages of five to 14 participated in the one-day initiative, DEEPAM4U, which means “Bringing the Light to You”. DEEPAM4U kicked off with a new shawl distribution in keeping with the tradition of sharing gifts of brand new clothes on the special day. Moreover, the underprivileged students had the chance to revel in the festivities with kolum art and a candle decoration session, with iM4U providing the necessary ingredients for the children to create their very own row of lights. To merry it up, the children were also treated with an Indian feast and entertained with special performances by iM4U supporters and friends. The children also got the chance to socialise with 130 MySkills Foundation students, who were volunteers in cheering the children during the event. MySkills Foundation’s Director, Pasupathi Sithamparam said that Deepavali was a celebration of light and love over darkness while anticipating a brand new year, “What better way to spread the cheer to the less fortunate than to do it during Deepavali? Along with iM4U, we hope that we were able to spread the Deepavali spirit to the children.”

Students from the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme at Sunway University recently handed a cheque of RM17,000 to United Voice. This year, Sunway’s AUSMAT students and lecturers chose to channel funds raised from their annual I-Care Day to United Voice in hopes to educate and raise social awareness among the youngsters and their peers about people with learning disabilities. United Voice is a self-advocacy society that is led by persons with learning disabilities. Its membership includes persons with Down Syndrome, autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. The overall goal of the society is to empower people with learning disabilities by teaching them skills to lead an independent life. Sunway College’s AUSMAT Director Vanitha Satchithanadan said, “There was so much excitement for I-Care Day, it was inspiring to see students and lecturers so excited and passionate in their efforts to raise money for United Voice.” I-Care Day this year raised funds via a charity drive and a new I-Care Day Treasure Hunt. The two events saw the participation of all AUSMAT students, whereby each class was assigned with a booth each to sell food or games for the day. “Students and lecturers had a lot of fun [with the new and different I-Care Day Treasure Hunt] so we might plan another for next year” added Vanitha. Praising Sunway College for providing a holistic education for its students, Vanitha said education was not all about learning but also how they can contribute to society. Events like I-Care “provide our students opportunities to explore business models and marketing techniques they learned in the classroom.”

A Spooktacular Halloween,

Courtesy Of UCSI University Bootcamp Trains The New Generation Of

Writers On Technology

The internet has greatly advanced the world of education by creating a greater accessibility for Malaysian youths for thoughts and perspective expression; however, its explosive growth impacted on their writing skills as much as it had supported them. Taylor’s University School of Communication’s Dean Josephine Tan touched on the trends of young writers who lacked basic writing skills and applied cyber slang instead of writing in a proper language. “Increasingly, many young writers tend to neglect the basics like failure to capitalise after a full stop, and leaving a space before punctuations. It is acceptable to use abbreviations in social communications, but in the world of business and professional lives, students still need good, solid writing and communication skills,” Tan said. After engaging with young writers, Tan found that the informal styles due to typing often caused young writers to make common mistakes in basic writing principles, including lengthy and loose sentences, inconsistent tenses, and words usage inaccuracy. Other than rapid technology advancement, Tan cited current challenges as being language proficiency, validity and points organisation, as well as the practice on meticulousness – the supporting reason why practicing for both writing and editing in literacy is imperative. The Communication School in Taylor’s University organised the annual School Mag Boot Camp 2014 to train young writers to produce better quality pieces. This year, it attracted 120 young aspiring writers from 30 public and private schools around Klang Valley, and with some participants from as far as Cameron Highlands. It generally covered hard news and feature writing tips as well as the introduction to yearbook publication processes.

More than 40 underprivileged students of a welfare organisation – Shelter – shrieked in both enjoyment and fright in a Halloween celebration hosted by UCSI University’s mass communication students. The “Spooktacular Halloween – Smiles through Spooks” event was a unique one that provided the children of Shelter with the chance of obtaining horror-themed cards, having their nails painted both beautifully and spookily in the nail art booth, as well as having Halloween-related body paintings. To top it off, the event successfully raised RM2,000, in which RM1,500 in cash was donated to the welfare organisation, and the remaining RM500 was used to purchase items for the goody bags given to each child of Shelter. The event, as part of the students’ final project for a subject, was to train them in organising a charity event to fundraise using both traditional and social media methods to raise a certain awareness. The media relations representative of this project, Yazfaleeq Yusof, said that the experience was eye-opening, “We wanted to help Shelter in the long run; to do this we needed to get the media to highlight their good work.” He added that the team’s efforts paid off with the coverage from two major newspapers present during the event. “We really understand mass communications better through this because we did real events and media work even before we enter the working world,” he said with a smile.

Yasu Tanaka, the world-renowned director/producer who brought the two-day special screening of award-winning short movies, thanked Limkokwing University for hosting the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia for the second time. Recognising the tertiary education institution’s contribution to the film industry, Tanaka said, “On top of hosting the event, the management of Limkokwing University and the students have shown good vibration which is something we cannot get anywhere else. I think that the good atmosphere at the University is necessary to make the event successful.” Tanaka, in his opening address, emphasised that while some may have watched short films online, most audiences have not been exposed to high quality short films since the truly high quality works are rarely showcased to the public. And as a platform for showcasing these truly high quality short films to the masses, the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2014 held a two-day special screening of award-winning short movies in Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s Cyberjaya campus on October 20th and 21st. The film festival opened at the Hall of Fame at Limkokwing University, with an official launching ceremony by the university’s Senior Vice President (Industry Empowerment) Dato’ Raja Aznil Raja Hisham. The film festival which originated from the Japanese capital of Tokyo in 1999, displayed 22 highest quality short films submitted from over 4,000 short films made by directors in 110 countries, alongside a series of industry-related technology talks, workshops, and exhibitions. The festival is the only film festival in Japan that’s recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an official qualifier of short films for Academy Awards nomination.

Design Students Go

Green

Design students from three top public universities received top honours for their interpretations of an ‘Academy of Sustainability’, a theme in the Anugerah Hijau Green Space 2014 awards. The team of three from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) won the first place for their nature-themed original design titled ‘The Sanctuary’. They received a cash prize, trophy, and a three-month internship opportunity with a reputable architect firm in the future. The team’s representative Lim Ai Yin said that they wanted to build a sustainable campus that is able to co-exist in harmony with nature. “We try to do more with less by incorporating simple yet sustainable building structure to lessen the impact to the environment,” Lim added. The second and third placed teams came from the same institution – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UiTM) – for their environmentally friendly and sustainable Eco-Academy designs. Other than cash prizes, trophies, and internship opportunities, the three champions received certificates, as well as merchandises like eco-friendly products and book vouchers. EcoKnight, the organiser of Anugerah Hijau Green Space 2014, hosted the awards event to challenge youths in being creative and innovative in addressing everyday environmental issues, for instance pollution, limited space, improper waste disposal, deforestation, and human health. The Managing Director of LBS Bina Group Berhad – the partner company of EcoKnight in this initiative – Dato’ Lim Hock San said that LBS was very happy to participate in flourishing home-grown talent in the environmentally-sustainable architecture contest, and thanked all the aspiring designers. “Though there can be only one champion, I hope the rest continue to make Malaysia proud by pursuing success and recognition with their ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas,” he added.

KLMUC Students Win Big In Inaugural MFBEA Waiters’

Race 2014

Four teams from the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College’s (KLMUC) Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management won an astounding 4 out of 5 prizes in the inaugural Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association’s (MFBEA) Anggerik Waiters’ Race 2014 in late October. In line with the annual International Great Waiter’s Race hosted in renowned cities worldwide, like Paris, Perth and Berlin, the Malaysian Tourism Ministry and Tourism Selangor held the initiative to bring this event to our shores so as to provide valuable practical experience for the students. The event was divided into two main categories; individual and team events where the participants comprised college students, hoteliers, restaurant waiters and celebrities. The winning team, called “The Dangerous” under the College Students Team Category won 1st place and walked away with a cash prize of RM1,000. All student participants also received an official MBFEA certificate of participation. It was quite a sight to see students race to the finish line, balancing a serving tray with a drink in one hand. As an added twist to the race, the last team member running to the finish line had to be dressed in traditional Malaysian attire. The leader of the four teams, Chef Yahaya bin Hassan said that winning the team event was proof of KLMUC students’ hard work, as it was difficult enough as it was to balance a tray in one hand, but the competitive environment made it even more difficult. He added, “I was really pleased to see the students persevere and win as they showcased their skills, speed and most importantly mental fortitude. This is what we teach them at KLMUC and they displayed it in full force.” The team leader then concluded that KLMUC would look forward to sending their students for future events such as these, for them to gain knowledge and experience while enjoying themselves at the same time. You might be dreaming of having the figures of Victoria’s Secret’s angels, but these women didn’t think so. New York’s Lingerie Fashion Week, hosted at the end of October celebrated women’s bodies of all shapes and sizes on the fashion show’s runway for the spring/summer 2015 collection. From size 0 to 16 to pregnant ladies, the fashion week even included breast cancer survivors and those currently living with breast cancer. Lingerie Fashion Week’s Lauren Rich said that the fashion show’s organiser had envisioned it to be a platform to embrace and celebrate a wide range of intimate apparel brands since the beginning. Moreover, the platform embraced all body types as well, from petite to bull bust to full figure to maternity. “Lingerie is not one-size-fits-all, and neither are the women who wear it—on, and off, the runway,” Rich continued. Victoria’s Secret faced a backlashed for hosting the Perfect Body Campaign which featured thin-figured models, a few days before the Lingerie Fashion Week was held. Even though the word “perfect body” on the advertisement referred to the lingerie’s bodyline, the public interpreted the discourse differently. It added up to their guilty list of not responding to the backlash, and its unpopular move of popularising thigh gaps some time ago. Check out these Lingerie Fashion Week’s pictures!

In October, British singer Sam Smith emerged victorious in various awards events and even picked up five awards in one day! The day turned out to be overpowering for the 22-year-old soul singer from London, as soon as Q rewarded him the nomination for Best New Act Award and then MOBO named him as the Best Male Act, Best R & B/ Soul Act, Best Album, and his “Stay with Me” single as the Best Song. Smith, whose album The Lonely Hour skyrocketed to the first spot in the UK chart, was grateful for the continuous support from his fans and he dedicated his MOBO Awards to them and to those who helped him in writing the songs. “This is truly a dream come true,” the singer said, “I hardly ever win awards and I never got awards in school for anything so it is really surreal for me to have five in one day.” Overwhelmed, the singer joked, “I don’t know where I’ll put them all. I need a cabinet. Well actually I need a house big enough for a cabinet.” As if 2014 wasn’t exciting enough for Smith, he dominated the 2015 People’s Choice Award by being nominated in four categories – the most in the list for Favourite Song, Favourite Album, Favourite Breakout Artist, and Favourite Male Artist, according to a report released early November this year. On top of that, Smith’s upcoming 2015 UK Tour tickets were sold out in under an hour, and his album displayed the staying power to become the second biggest selling album of 2014, overtaking popular British rock band Coldplay.

South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority: “Pistorius’ Verdict Is Too Light!” South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) filed an appeal against the verdict Judge Thokozile Masipa imposed on double amputee Olympic/Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius, two weeks after Pistorius was sentenced early in November this year. The prosecutors, who had to initially apply for Masipa’s permission to appeal, stated that their decision was based on the question of the law. The NPA had communally agreed that Masipa made a mistake on Pistorius’ sentence of 5-year imprisonment. The South Africa’s NPA believed that Pistorius should have been found guilty of murder, for shooting four bullets through his house’s toilet’s cubicle door, hitting his then-girlfriend in the head, arm, and hip. The organisation appealed for a minimum additional time of 10 years if Masipa approved. They filed the appeal papers in early November at the Pretoria High Court, where the 27-year-old faced a seven-month trial for shooting his then-girlfriend/South African model Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, after mistaking her for an intruder. Masipa’s current sentence will see Pistorius serve his first 10 months in Pretoria’s prison hospital, and then the remainder of the 5-year sentence thereafter.

Champion’s Breakfast: College Basketball Player Honoured By Wheaties Famed cereal brand Wheaties honoured a terminally ill Mount St Joseph University basketball player by putting her photograph up on a Wheaties box in early November this year. Wheaties has previously only did so for the nation’s Olympians. The basketball player, Lauren Hill is not expected to make it to Christmas this year, captured America’s heart with her determination to fulfil her lifetime dream – playing in a college basketball match. Hill’s debut in the match got the crowd going wild, especially when she scored a layup just 17 seconds into the game against Hiram College. Mount St Joseph University brought the match forward to early November and used a stadium to accommodate a larger crowd, in line with supporting their freshman’s wish to play on a court while she still could. The 19-year-old was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last year and she had been practising to dribble and to score baskets ever since. Her iron determination led Hill to fight her cause through basketball, proving that even terminally-ill people could fulfil their lifetime dreams if they worked hard enough for it. Other than cheering up America’s kitchen tables on a cereal box, video games company EA honoured Hill’s love for basketball by gracing her on the cover of their EA Sports NBA Live 15 game. The video games company used humour in their advertisement tweet, “Watch out @Dame_Lillard there’s a new cover athlete in town & she’s an absolute star. #NBALIVE15 Lauren Hill Edition!”

For Healthy, Glowing Skin

DECEMBER 2014

Comedo, or more commonly known as blackhead, is a dark spot on the skin that’s caused by oxygenated skin debris and oil. Apart from this, external elements, such as poor exfoliation and even makeup contributes to the build up of blackheads.

Blackheads, go away! 26

| CAMPUS PLUS

B

lackheads are the first stage of acne. They’ll eventually turn into a pimple (or pustule), and then into acne. Most believe that blackheads form due to being unhygienic. However, dermatologists working for the British National Health Service (NHS) have debunked this. According to their research, they encourage individuals to wash faces a maximum of two times daily. Any more and you’ll risk aggravating your skin.

In the event you do have blackheads, dermatologists recommend that you go directly to them for the removal of blackheads. However, visiting dermatologists will cost you money. In all honesty, there’s really no need to visit one if you are capable of taking care of your own skin. All you need is a little patience and gentleness. Now let’s get rid of them! Boys, don’t be shy, you can follow these steps too, because blackheads are common to both men and women. First of all, for all skin types, get a bowl of hot water. After properly washing and rinsing your face, place your face over the bowl and let the steam from the bowl reach your face. The hot steam will help to open up your pores to ease in the removal of the blackheads. Once this is done, you can try any of the following:

honey (and your fingers!) on that spot for about three minutes or so, before removing them. Because of the sticky nature of honey, you’ll be able to easily pull the blackheads out as you remove your fingers. Rinse your face well with water after, and you’re left with super soft and clean skin! Tip: Honey has a gentle antibacterial action, so you’re actually cleaning your face while doing this. It’s also heavenly sweet, so resist the urge to lick your fingers while using this method!

The Eggy Method

The Milky Nutmeg This recipe works best on oily skin, but will work on other type of skins as well. Nutmeg supports oil removal and has a scrubbing-like effect that leaves you with smooth skin. When combined with lactic acid of milk, this concoction breaks down old skin cells, which is easily removed after a round of rinsing. Getting this concoction ready is simple - just combine your ingredients until they form a thin paste, and prepare your face for the scrub! Wipe it across areas with blackheads using a circular motion for three to five minutes. Be careful to use minimal amounts of strength, lest you aggravate or even damage your skin. Tip: You can replace milk with buttermilk for more lactic acid content.

Honey, Do Me! After cleaning your face with the water steam step, pat it dry, and start pouring a small amount of honey on your fingers and quickly apply it to areas where there are blackheads. Leave the

Although eggs don’t smell very appealing, hundreds of people have tried this method, and swear by it. First of all, separate the yolk and the white. Once this is done, spread the egg white all over where you have blackheads using your fingers or a paintbrush. Try to form a thin layer, and let dry. For best results, apply up to three layers. The egg white will dry up in 15 minutes, which is when your face will start to feel a little tight. When this happens, you’ll want to peel of the layers very gently, or use a wet cloth to wipe it off. Tip: You can use the yolk for your hair! It will leave your hair healthy and stronger. Just apply some on your hair, leave it to dry and rinse it off. When you’re done using the method that you’re most comfortable with, you’ll want to of course prevent the forming of more blackheads. Here are some tips on how to maintain blackheadsfree skin. 1. Choose face cleansers that are suitable for your skin type. Choosing the wrong product may cause your skin to produce more oil, which will promote the forming of blackheads. 2. Wash your face twice a day (THE NICE TWICE!). Any more and it’ll be overkill. 3. Wear as little makeup as possible. 4. Change your pillowcase(s) on a weekly basis to avoid your pores from getting clogged with oil and dead skin. 5. Blot your face with tissue paper (or oil-free papers) throughout the day to help soak up excess oil. Now that you know, you can try them out at home! Don’t forget to let us know how it goes on our Facebook page!

The Shiny Craze Returns

T

While it may be a blast from the past, you definitely won’t feel ancient because sequin dresses are back in fashion!

he sequin dresses that we’ve been seeing so far this season are not at all tacky or too over the top. They make you glow and are more sophisticated than those splashies from 30 years ago. If you’re planning to join this season’s sequin craze, here are some easy-to-follow tips: Start off with a sequin dress. Add a layer by putting on your favourite jacket and you’re

good to go for classes. Outside of classes, you can swap your outerwear with a leather jacket if you’re out on a date with your significant other. For something a little more sexy, leave the outerwear at home and put on those strappy heels, for a girls’ night out! However, do remember that sequin dresses are mostly simple, so we highly recommend you going with as few accessories as possible.

Jewellery with sequins on them are a definite no. Most importantly, it’s important to be confident in yourself and your dress, and you’ll have no issues pulling it off. On that note, sequin dresses are mostly figure hugging, so it’s best to find out that fits your body shape. Here are some examples of some celebrities sporting sequin dresses, for your reference.

Suit Up!

DECEMBER 2014

The Legendary Suit and Shirt “As long as I got my suit and tie, Imma leave it all on the floor tonight, And you got fixed up to the nines, let me show you a few things. All pressed up in black and white, and you’re dressed in that dress I like, Love is swinging in the air tonight, let me show you a few things.” – Justin Timberlake

If you know this song (YouTube it if you don’t), for sure you would recall how excited you were when putting on a suit. And looking sharp in it, wherever you go. After all, it’s the attire of choice for none other than THE BRO of all bros – the legen…wait for it…dary Barney Stinson himself.

A

s sophisticated as it already looks by itself, the history of the suit is way cooler than you can possibly imagine. Historically, the men under the British Regency period evolved suits from embroidered and bejewelled suits trend that started off in the 19th century. This group of people then progressed into the Victorian era, and their exquisitely understated yet formal style gained mass recognition and following, even to this day. These men though, were brilliant, in that they took the French word ‘suite’ – meaning ‘following’, and in the process aptly describing this outfit. The components of every suit outfit’s garments (that consists of a jacket, trousers, and waistcoat) always harmoniously follow each other and have the same cloth and colour, and best to be worn together. Check out these good-looking men’s style as your ‘suit-up’ reference! Even better, refer to the Fashion Trend section of the magazine, encourage your girlfriend to dress up in a sequin dress, and ‘follow’ what Justin Timberlake says in the song; tell your girlfriend that she’s dressed in that dress you like!

The Revolution of Music

DECEMBER 2014

Music Over The Y-ears Remember the (not so) good old days when you had to rewind your cassettes to re-listen to music? Of course you don’t – but your parents definitely would. Tune in to find out how the world changed music.

I

t is said that the only constant in life is change, and music, like everything else has changed too along with the times. Not only have the types of music undergone change, but also the methods in which we consume it. We aim to school hipsters and normal folk alike about what and how things were heard (way) back then. Music is found in all cultures and used for a variety of reasons, often differing in time and place. Seeing as to how the majority of our readers subscribe to Western influences of music, and the limited amount of space, we will only be discussing the American and European scene – which are after all the major players in the music industry today.

The Genre-ation Few may know, and fewer still listen, to medieval forms of music. Those church-like hymns, more commonly known as Gregorian chants, have surprisingly survived from before the 800s to the present day. It was used as the liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church, and is believed to have been founded by Pope Gregory I who was most likely a composer himself. Next came the Renaissance form of music, which found its way through northern Europe. Here polyphony – the incorporation of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to music with just one voice (monophony) marked the difference.

Then leading to the era of Baroque, in which instrumental music became more dominant. One of the most famous composers of this era would be Johann Sebastian Bach. Mozart reigned next, in the time of the Classical music era. This period is known by its homophonic texture, or an obvious melody with the accompaniment of sounds. The new melodies tended to be almost voice-like and could be sung along to - making singers the focus of the music. In the Romantic period, music became more expressive and emotional. This allowed for music to be incorporated into other forms of art such as plays and literature. Among notable names of this music generation are Chopin, Verdi and Tchaikovsky. We have moved along the timeline and finally reached the here and now. The age of modern and contemporary music – to which most of us need not be told about how it differs from the rest. A lot has changed since; music has become more electronic for one. There is a wide selection of genres for one to choose from – from pop to country, slow rock to death metal, classical to dubstep, the list just goes on.

phonographs

Gramophone

graphophone

Hear Me Now Apart from the changes, or rather additions to the range of genres, the way we listen to music has also changed. We’ve moved from huge phonographs (no, not pornography, you dirty minded people!) to tiny MP3 players. Thomas Edison, the famous inventor of the light bulb, also gave us a number of other inventions to be thankful for. He lighted the way to sound with the creation of the phonograph in 1877. However, sound quality was poor and each recording only lasted for one play. Its not so distant cousin, the graphophone premiered in France, and was mostly similar, except that it used wax cylinders as its recording medium. Thus allowing it to be played more times. The next update was the gramophone, which is the symbol used for the Grammy Awards. Built to function without electricity, you had to wind it up to use it. The gramophone used records that were made out of glass. Sound information was located in a spiral groove that was etched into the flat record, which was rotated on the gramophone. The gramophone featured an ‘arm’ with a needle that read the grooves in the record and led to vibrations which produced the sounds. Over time, the records itself evolved and were made with plastic – making it more easily mass-produced. Though the drawback was that is also broke more easily as vinyl-plastic is not that strong. In the 1970’s, another revolution came about – the cassette tape. It used a magnetic tape, which played the music from left to right. Once you were done with the music on side A of the cassette, you flip it over for more songs

Walkman

on side B (isn’t that great or what!?). Sony was the first to capitalise on this invention and created the Walkman, which was the first personal and portable cassette music player to shock and awe the market in 1979. Everyone wanted a Walkman then, as it was hip, it was happening, and one could actually listen to music anywhere and everywhere, as long as the batteries last. The next major revolution which is still widely available today, are compact discs, or CDs, as they’re more commonly called. These also led to the advent of CD players – of course there are portable and non-portable forms of these. It beats the cassette format in the popularity (and technological – digital anyone?) game as you could skip songs and go directly to the one you want to listen to, instead of having to go through the entire list. And then came piracy (which is bad BTW, but you know this already), sorry, we mean, the digital age. Songs now are all so easily available! The iPod was the first device that allowed for digital downloads to be stored and listened to. Nowadays, most of us listen to music through our phones, tablets and over the internet. We can download as much as we like and also use software such as Spotify to stream music directly.

Video Killed The Radio Star

How Now Noise Cow?

The way music is presented has also changed. First, we were only able to listen to music through the radio. Thus the music industry also created other spin-off job opportunities, such as DJs. Now though, in the digital age, there are more job opportunities. Apart from the average disc jockeys, there are also video jockeys, or VJs – as seen on channels such as MTV. Hence, in a way, we can now view music; and artists put a lot of effort in presenting their music well by creating music videos to entertain and capture the masses. The first song to play on MTV too, was aptly titled Video Killed The Radio Star, which was performed by The Buggles – a band you’ve most likely not heard of. However, you might have come across a variation of the song as it has been covered and featured in other media since. People these days therefore appreciate the show of music as much as listening to it, perhaps even more than. Why do you think live concerts are so popular? Or live bands performing to packed clubs around the world? Far from great concerts like Woodstock though, you do not necessarily have to travel far to watch your favourite gigs. Simply sit in front of your screen, and stream the concert or view it over YouTube.

Music intelligence platform company, The Echo Nest, which spun off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab and has been acquired by Spotify, states that music of these days have changed in a number of ways. For one, it is more energetic. There are shorter plateaus in the beat, as we can notice more pop-like sounds and songs are more in demand and created, compared to other more mellow sounds. Music is also less ‘organic’ (or natural), so to speak. The rise of technology has naturally led to more technological sounds being incorporated into the production of music. Instruments such as synthesizers, drum machines, electronic keyboards, sequencers, sophisticated software, and other things that tend to produce mechanised sounds are often used of late. The tempo, or speed of music, is also seen to have increased over the years, peaking especially in the 80’s when people simply loved their “go-go” music, then it dropped slightly, and is back up as fast as ever. Music is also seen to be getting louder – no, not just by turning the volume up. This trend began during the heyday of Elvis Presley. Producers, through compressing more detail into smaller areas, pack more punch into their recordings, which make the sound reach higher decibels, and therefore louder. Nothing your own volume tuning cannot fix.

Back To The Future Who knows what the future of music holds? Perhaps soon there will be creations that allow us to hear music without having to be connected to any device that needs batteries. Maybe all we need to do is say an artist name or song title and instantly be able to find out everything about the song/artist while hearing the music. Technology is rapidly advancing, so who can tell what will come next? One thing we can be sure of is that through it all, music will never die. DEC 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

The 10 Best Themes from Movies and Television

DECEMBER 2014

The Music THAT Makes the Movies Theme songs are an integral part of film and television; we may forget titles, but all we need to do is hum or sing the theme and someone is bound to come up with the title. In this article, we take a look at 10 remarkable songs, in no specific order, from the silver screen.

2. Star Wars 1. Spongebob Squarepants Let’s face it, you’re going to sing along every time the show starts, even if you’re 25, heck, maybe even if you’re 50, if the show goes on for that long. This song is memorable because it tells a fascinating tale of someone who lives in a pineapple under the sea. If you get the need to hum it every now and then, go ahead and do so. There’s nothing wrong with letting your inner child out every now and then. 44

Most movies don’t have lengthy beginning credit scenes, and for good purpose too – we don’t want to waste time and get right into the movie! However, in the case of the Star Wars series, the rolling credits and superb music make for an iconic opening that many do not mind at all. John Williams, the composer, also won the most awards in his career for creating this score. To be specific, he won three Grammies, one Golden Globe, an Academy Award and a couple of BAFTAs.

3. Jaws Guess what? He did it again. John Williams is also the person responsible for the music that plays in your head whenever you imagine sharks coming to get you! The Jaws series theme song also won him a number of accolades. More than that, it helped to cultivate a tremendous fear of sharks in an entire generation of individuals who watched this show.

4. E.T. If there ever was a Steven Spielberg of composers, John Williams would be him,

This theme will get your adrenaline pumping and make you feel like you’ve the strength of the Italian Stallion himself! With this song on your playlist, you’re all set to take the day by its horns and maybe even make lemonade, or two.

7. Mission Impossible because once again, he was the one responsible for the theme of E.T. Speaking of Spielberg, if you didn’t know it yet, this movie was directed by Spielberg. The score for E.T. Is uplifting and has a very happy mood to it, making it very suitable for this movie.

It’s impossible for us not to list this tune. With a catchy beat, this theme song has been remixed and resampled countless times, so there are many versions for you to get addicted to. If you’re doing some snooping around or maybe are doing a little martial arts, this song will most likely be playing in your head if you’ve heard it before.

5. Psycho

8. Frozen

Alfred Hitchcock is the man responsible for this iconic thriller that many of your older siblings and parents will be familiar with. Whilst you may not know the movie, you would have most likely have heard the theme song play before. This is one instance of a song superseding the popularity of the film.

By now, every person who has access to the Internet or has seen Disney’s ‘Frozen’, and if you’ve seen it, you’d most likely have heard of ‘Let It Go’. As annoying as it is, you’ve got to admit that this song is pretty catchy. It’s here to stay, so those of you who don’t like it will have to just learn to... let it go.

6. Rocky

9. Lion King

For an inspirational, upbeat song, there’s none better than the theme from Rocky. Use this song as your morning alarm tune or when you need that extra “kick” during your daily run.

release, people are still paying money to watch musicals based on this movie. With songs like ‘Circle of Life’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’, the songs from this movie are truly memorable.

10. Ghostbusters Thanks to this song, we will always know who to call when there’s something strange in our neighbourhood. This song was so popular, it even reached the peak of the U.S. Billboard and was at the top of the music charts in a number of other countries as well. It was made to sound like an ad. jingle and by the looks of it, this was a successful attempt, as many 80’s babies still remember the lines till today – years after the movie was made.

A tale of loss, bravery, friendship and much more, ‘Lion King’ is likely one of Disney’s bestknown titles. The songs from this movie are so memorable that even after a decade after its

Ever wonder what’s it like to be a radio announcer? Well, wonder no more as we take you through Tylerboy’s world.

I used to think that being a radio announcer was an easy task. But now that I’m actually one, it is not as easy as it seems. We are constantly working even when the mic is turned off

T

yler Lim, or better known as Tylerboy is one of iM4U FM’s talented radio announcers. Tune in to the frequency of 107.9 FM from 4pm to 8pm every Monday to Friday to catch Tylerboy on air. Campus+: Thank you for having this interview with us. Please tell us a bit more about yourself. Tylerboy: Hello! My name is Tyler Lim, also known as Tylerboy whenever I go on air on iM4U fm. I love meeting new people and I am outspoken. I tend to talk a lot even when I’m around people whom I just met. I don’t bite, I promise. C+: Among so many media platforms, why did you choose to work for radio? T: Because I tend to talk a lot. As a radio announcer, I have the opportunity to express more to our listeners whenever they tune in to iM4U fm. On top of that, I’m a musician myself; therefore I understand the challenge to broadcast songs to be heard by the public. Broadcast radio, in particular iM4U fm, creates a platform for local talents to share their songs on air. C+: Why iM4U in particular? T: I chose iM4U because it is by the youth and for the youth and I myself am a volunteer at heart. So together with iM4U fm, I would want to instil social activism and make a positive impact on society. As a non-profit organisation that cultivates and nurtures volunteerism amongst Malaysian youth, iM4U is a perfect fit for me. C+: Do you change your voice when you’re going on air? Why? T: No, I don’t have a different voice when I’m on air. This is because I want to stay true to my personality and not project another version of myself when I am on air. In my humble opinion, everyone should always stay true to themselves. C+: What is it like to work in a radio station? T: Personally, it is an eye opening experience because I used to think that being a radio announcer was an easy task. But now that I’m actually one, it is not as easy as it seems. We are constantly working even when the mic is turned off.

C+: Is there a dress code in the radio station? Can you wear pyjamas to work? T: There is no specific dress code that you have to follow, however if I was alone in the studio, I would love to walk in to work in my pyjamas. Yes, I’ll wear that. C+: Are the working hours flexible? T: It actually depends on the show that you are anchoring. For instance, I’m currently anchoring the Chill-X show which is from 4pm to 8pm every Monday to Friday. So, I have to be in the office by 12 pm every day and I’m not complaining! C+: What was the biggest challenge you encountered when you are working here/ for a radio station? T: The biggest challenge would be the prepping sessions before every show. Along with my partner Jiggy, we would need to do research on topics that are relatable to our listeners. C+: What is the most exciting part when you are working for a radio? T: The most exciting part about working for a radio station like iM4U fm is that I get to share my volunteering experiences with my listeners, both on and off mic. And hopefully by doing so, I will be able to influence them into becoming volunteers themselves! C+: What do you want to achieve now? T: I want to be able to make a positive change to the community. I believe that I can do just that with iM4U fm. This is because iM4U fm is the only radio station that spearheads social causes and volunteerism. C+: What’s your dream? What’s your ultimate goal? T: My dream is to own a coffee house. And ultimately, to fight for unity in our country. C+: Anything else that you would like to let our readers know? T: Keep working towards your dreams and do not give up easily. It is possible to achieve your goal in life as nothing is impossible, I am an example. Best of luck peeps! DEC 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

On the 2nd, 10th and 28th of October, we were able to work together with Philips for their AquaTouch road shows that were held at INTI College, Taylor’s University and University of Malaya respectively. More than 10,000 students participated in these road shows, which were filled with many fun activities. During the road shows, there were special promotions on shavers and grooming sets. Because these road shows were held at campuses, the prices were specially adjusted for the budgets of students. None of the shavers on sale were priced above RM100. In fact, you could have purchased a Philips shaver there for RM49! Not only did these events allow students to purchase new shavers at discounted prices, it served as a platform to promote the conversion from razors to shavers. In addition, there was a ‘Members get Members’ reward campaign, where purchasers were encouraged to introduce two of their friends to buy shavers. If successful, the purchasers received a PHILIPS football USB for free. Of course, there were also plenty of games and plenty of gifts going around. There were quizzes, surveys, free haircuts upon a successful purchase, and even a ‘Modern Man Challenge’, where guys were tested on just how manly they are – they were asked to do push-ups, squats, arm wrestling, sit ups and many other physical tasks to earn premium gifts. There was also a selfie contest held at all three campuses, where the most creative selfie post featuring a Philips AquaTouch shaver, walked away with a premium gift, courtesy of Philips.

Itt’smas! s i r h C

It’s that time of the year again where your wallet becomes a little bit lighter thanks to all that Christmas shopping. Sometimes though, don’t you wish you could ask Santa for something for yourself? Here’s what some of you wished you could ask for this Christmas.

I think I would want a big teddy bear, because I can’t think of anything else to ask for,and it’s cute. I think it is, and I mean, who doesn’t like teddy bear?

It would be inner peace, because I have been very stressed with work and studies ever since I got here in August. So the one thing I want from Santa would definitely be peace; peace of mind.

I would ask for more time from Santa, because sometimes I don’t have enough time to sleep and finish my coursework. There’s a lot of things to get done and a lot of books to be read, I feel like 24 hours isn’t enough for me in one day. So yeah, I would ask for time from Santa Claus.

The only thing I want right now is a scholarship so I can go to a university of my choice in the States next year to pursue my postgraduate degree. Maybe John Hopkins.

This event began in October and was held in other locations such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. Among the highlights of this event was of course a cosplay competition, where the winner won an iPhone 5s. In addition, there was also a Dota 2 mini-tournament, where the champion managed to walk away with RM5,000 in cash, as well as a smartphone. If you’ve been following the tech scene lately, it’s also worth mentioning that the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality system, was brought in. Participants were able to personally try the Oculus Rift out. Other activities included an anime café, caricature drawings, a 3D photo shoot and a ‘Meet The Masters’ workshop. Without a doubt, the anime café was a hit with the crowd, as customers were given the chance to see their favourite anime charaters as coffee art. As for the ‘Meet The Masters’ workshop, it was an opportunity for attendees to engage with veterans in the manga, gaming and cosplay community and get some hints and tips.

In addition to great discounts, there were also a number of different activities held there, including a variety of contests. Among the contests was a selfie contest, where participants had to take selfies of themselves, together with Philips Fidelio headphones. Once the selfies were taken, the photographs were showcased on the Philips & CampusPlus Photo Wall of Fame, where other students could vote on the best selfie. The selfie with the most amount of votes won a pair of Philips Fidelio headphones worth RM199. Apart from that, there was a mini-football contest where participants could show off their soccer skills. The participants who managed to kick a soccer ball through a holed wall managed to win attractive prizes, including some cash prizes. We love the way they play games because it’s not just about their skills, but their impeccable and exciting strategies too. It’s not about will they win the game or not, but how.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) Surprise! It is one of our best anime of the year. We can’t help but keep thinking about them always because it is just too hilarious. A comedy that never reuses or recycles its jokes, yet still able to make you laugh in every episode is absolutely rare. We love every single character here because all of them have diverse personalities. Make sure you watch this anime or else you are missing out!

It’s been an amazing year. We have enjoyed a number of great anime that exceeded our expectations and that is truly remarkable. Before 2014 is over, we have decided to share five of our best anime of the year that we can’t stop thinking about (or re-watching).

Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins) This was the first time that we couldn’t guess the identity of the character correctly. However, we love the misdirection they gave us. It is an anime that is full of surprises. The Seven Deadly Sins were once a group of seven powerful knights who disbanded after being suspected of planning to overthrow the King. According to rumours, The Seven Deadly Sins are still alive and have not been eliminated by the King’s Holy Knights. Ironically, the King has been overthrown and killed by his own knights after 10 years. Therefore, the third princess, Elizabeth has begun her journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins to help her in recapturing the kingdom.

Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte)

invade Shinichi’s brain, it can only take over his right hand and learn to coexist together. It is a thrilling anime because you get really concerned and nervous for them whenever they are battling with other Parasytes that attempt to kill them.

Shirobako Ever wonder how an anime is produced? Stop wondering and watch Shirobako, an anime that walks you through the process of “makingan-anime” in an anime style! We have been watching so many anime and yet we do not have a clear idea on how they are being made. Shirobako is a fun anime that tells you about the real anime industry. You wouldn’t feel the stress they go through because it’s all done in an amusing manner.

Can you imagine that we actually love the wormlike aliens called Parasytes, who take human beings as hosts by entering through their noses and ears to take over their brains? It sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Fear not, we do not like all of the Parasytes, but a particular Parasyte named Migi. This Parasyte fails to enter Izumi Shinichi’s nose and ears, so it burrows into his arm instead. Since it fails to CAMPUS PLUS |

Plain Spoken John Mellencamp

Though he was a rock idol from the 80s, John Mellencamp has refined his music throughout his career. His latest album, Plain Spoken, offers great insight at this refinement – his voice is full of character and wisdom, which comes from years of singing rock. It opens with Troubled Man, a mid-tempo song with Mellencamp’s husky voice that’s complemented by a great guitar riff. Following this, The Company of

The rising duo who specialise in electronic, Gorgon City, have just with Sirens. In Greek mythology, sirens are known as seductive creatures who lure men with alluring songs, so it’s a bold act from Gorgon City to name their debut album as Sirens. However, they’ve been

Cowards gives you an upbeat, almost folklike song that gives off a very harmonious atmosphere. Tears of Vain is yet another great track, as it sounds very personal and extremely raw, for lack of a better word. It’s a song about Mellencamp’s life and offers some snippits into his love life. As for The Brass Ring, Mellencamp attempts to capture how it feels like to have a conversation with “the saddest girl in the world”, which is rather interesting. For something more exciting, you can skip to Freedom of Speech, where he shares a little about his political views, with the help of a really great violinist. Last but not least, we have Blue Charlotte, which we think is the most beautiful and also the saddest song in the entire album. This song involves Mellencamp sharing a number of issues, including the lost of love, some political views and even a number of worldly issues. Overall, Plain Spoken is definitely a high-budget production, but it’s an album about a hardworking man who is eager to share parts of his life with his fans. Grab this album now, if you love story-telling.

fine-tuning this album for the good part of two years, and we believe that Gorgon City do indeed sound alluring in this album. Ready For Your Love is our favourite because MNEK combines a good amount of House and Soul, along with great vocals. It’s so addictive that it’s been on our playlist ever since we got the album. Lover Like You, on the other hand, is a surprise! Katy B sounds absolutely brilliant in this song, managing to captivate us and proving that this is indeed a genre that she’s comfortable with. Next up is Go All Night, where it’s Jennifer Hudson’s turn to shine. In this song, she’s just as, if not more impressive than Katy B. with her vocals. Finally, there’s Real, which is a straightforward House track with a little help from Yasmin’s vocals. If you’re a fan of House and Electronic music, this album comes recommended.

Hesitant Alien Gerard Way

A year after he left My Chemical Romance, former lead singer Gerard Way has finally released his much

If you’re a fan of Michael Bublé, we are almost certain that you’ll fall in love with Yannick Bovy. It has been

anticipated debut studio album. The album starts with The Bureau, where you get to hear the thumping bang of the drums, powerful guitar riffs and roaring vocals. Next up is Action Cat, which is nice to listen because it’s a very uplifting Pop/Rock song with some really smooth melody. Following that, No Shows adds a little zest by having a great intro and overall good rhythm. Then we have Brother, which is purely a Rock song that has Way pouring out his heart. Finally, we have Maya The Psychic, a remarkable song that somehow ties the whole album together perfectly. In Hesitant Alien, Way shows us a side of him we’ve never heard before, so it’s exciting to listen to this album!

two years since Bovy released his first album, so All The Way is a new album that is truly something that we welcome. We find this album to be very likeable, so we can’t really pick a favourite song from this album. In this album, each and every track features Bovy’s smooth, deep and caramelsweet voice, which would many any person who loves Jazz swoon. Overall, we find the songs in this album to be surprisingly pleasant and enjoyable. We had an absolutely great time listening to this album, especially late in the evening. If you like Jazzy tunes, get this album!

Swiftly Get to 1989! “1989 is the most sonically cohesive album I have ever made and my favourite album I have ever made.”

She is a singer, a songwriter, a multiinstrumentalist. She is also an international superstar, seventime GRAMMY winner and the youngest winner in history of the music industry’s highest honour, the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. Moreover, she is the first artist since the Beatles and also the only female artist in history, who logged six or more weeks at number one in United States with three consecutive studio albums. That is one mega awesome bio! Despite her profile picture splashed all over the page, you should know who we are talking about. Yes, Taylor Swift! In case you forgot, Time magazine has named her as one of the hundred most influential people in the world. Besides, she is Billboard’s youngest ever Woman of the Year and the only artist to have been awarded this honour twice. Impressive, isn’t it? When we first knew about her latest album, 1989, we expected nothing less from her. The album is finally available in Malaysia and we can’t wait to listen to it. 1989 is the greatly anticipated and critically acclaimed fifth studio album from the country star turned pop-ster. It is completely reasonable and understandable if you think that we are over-excited. 1989 is a touchstone. Taylor’s song writing and sonic evolution amazes us more than ever before. The heavy use of keyboards, the beats-driven style and the pop sensibilities that have always been the trademark of Taylor’s music now take front- and centre-stage on 1989. We gladly introduce to you her latest album, 1989. An album that she has been spending two years to produce. This album is a rebirth of Taylor Swift. Rewind

Song For You

Zhou Mi

Lee Min Ho

SM Entertainment has finally revealed the identity of their new male soloist! It is Zhou Mi from Super Junior-M. The mini album starts with Rewind, which is catchy and sheer pop brilliance. We have been repeating “Stop. Rewind. Rewind. Rewind” for a thousand times because it is just that addictive. Without You is a Chinese song that makes Zhou Mi shine. It is surprisingly attractive. Zhou Mi displays powerful vocals, and the mature energy that Why (Color Blin) gives us is impressive. It’s pop music with soul. We are actually in love with Love Tonight too and we rate it as the best song on the entire album. It is more complex and funkier than Rewind. Overall, this is a wonderfully constructed album.

Although Lee Min Ho has repeatedly stated that he has no desire to be a professional singer, Song For You is a departure from his past releases. Undeniably, he is one of the leading young actors in Korea, but what about as a singer? The good news is you won’t be disappointed! In fact, this album is evidence that he has potential to be a truly great singer. Paradise in Love is a jazzy French-inspired pop song. It is warm and likable, which we think would be ideal as café music. Travel makes us happy! It is incredibly cheerful and it makes us stop working just to finish the song. Honestly, we do not expect an electronic pop song from Lee. Burning Up is one of the most danceable songs on the whole album and it’s also our favourite. This is an album that reflects Lee’s maturity and singing ability. Don’t miss this album!

TOXIC

SeoTaiji

TOXIC is a unique group which consists of two members only. But what really makes them standout is their recording sounds are almost similar with some of the other five-member Korean bands. When we first listened to Time, we are amazed with their talents. The album opens with the funk infused rock song, Today. The guitar solos on Today greatly enhances the atmosphere of the song and is very exciting. Time deserves to be the title track of the entire album because it is such a brilliant electronic music with perfect bass line and vocals. We can’t help but keep listening to it. If you’re still unsure with TOXIC’s capability, then you should listen to Déjà vu. This is the song that makes them shine and you will be able to see their magnificent collaborative effort here. Our verdict: get this album as soon as possible, but beware of getting addicted to it.

He is back after five years with his ninth studio album. Known as “the President of culture”, we are so excited to listen to Quiet Night to see what he’s got this time! Sogyeokdong immediately attracts us. It’s a dreamy song that brings us back into the old school world. Christmalo. Win gives us the feel of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” due to its eerie and creepy style. Prison Break is the most upbeat and catchy song on the album, which makes it standout. We love 90s Icon! It’s a soulful song accompanied with beautiful piano and synthesisers. If you don’t like K-Pop, this song will change your mind. We truly enjoyed A Sad Record too. It’s an amusing contemporary pop song that you shouldn’t miss. This is a beautiful album. You’ll regret not giving it a spin.

THE MUSINGS OF A COLLEGE STUDENT ON CANCER

THE MUSINGS OF A COLLEGE STUDENT ON CANCER Yesterday I was asked by my Mum, to accompany her to the clinic. Sitting in the waiting room surrounded by old people, I felt disconnected and bored. She was getting a mammogram done to detect breast cancer. Soon my eyes started wandering around the clinic walls and there were all these posters on a variety of cancer-related subjects. To be honest, reading about cancer and its nasty effects on people isn’t a fun way to spend an afternoon. One particular poster caught my eye. It was about Pink October and breast cancer awareness. I can’t understand why women need to be told to check for cancer signs when it is quite obvious that we need to do it on a regular basis as it can potentially save lives. I mean let’s face it - how hard can it be to check your own boobs once every month? Now imagine if that’s an actual job that someone is doing day-in, day-out – a boob checker. What a hoot! For some people that might be an incentive to be a doctor. However, I suppose getting your boobs squashed in a machine will not be fun. But if you look at the bright side, you are encouraged to do it only after you turn 40. Then there was this other poster on HPV, a virus that causes cancer in both guys and girls, especially those who are sexually active. One can’t be too careful these days and I’m told that a vaccine for cervical cancer is something that all young people should consider taking. Ouch!! Looking at the other posters on the wall got me even more depressed. I didn’t know that there are so many different types of cancers such as cancer of the bladder, breast, colorectal, endometrial, kidney, leukemia, lung, melanoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, pancreatic, prostate, thyroid. Whew! I can’t even pronounce some of those names. And the list goes on and on. I have barely finished reading the posters when Mum calls me to join her. Inside the examination room the doctor is saying that many types of cancers are linked to unhealthy lifestyles. To avoid getting cancer we need to exercise regularly, stop smoking, avoid alcohol, eat a healthy diet, use natural cosmetics, stay away from processed food and avoid being in a polluted environment, among other things. Whew! That’s a lot of do’s and don’ts. But I’m told that all is not doom and gloom when it comes to cancer. As a result of increasing research, advances in treatment and better awareness generated by people, more and more people today are surviving cancer and that includes kids. I guess if you think about it, regular screening for cancer and early detection, which can be done at home for some types of cancers, isn’t so difficult and certainly worth looking into if it means saving lives. Ok. It wasn’t really as bad as I thought it’d be. I guess no matter what our age or where we come from, there’s always something we can do to help the cause and those who are battling cancer. Until the next time, G guys!

KNOW YOUR MILK

DECEMBER 2014

A

nd if you’re early, you might be able to see that friendly milkman with a big smile on his face to start your day

right. But the times have changed. You’re now buying milk at the supermarket with several choices, from almond to hemp

The Milky Way! Remember those days when buying milk was as simple as opening your front door?

to soy and countless more. However, do you really know everything about the milk you’re drinking? Let us take you on a tour to know your milk better!

1.Almond Milk This creamy, nutty flavoured milk is enriched with calcium, antioxidant, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin B12. Since it comes from plants, there’s no saturated fat or cholesterol, but monounsaturated fat that helps in lowering the bad cholesterol levels. If you’re a calories watcher, then almond milk is your best friend. But if you intend to increase your protein intake, it is definitely not a good choice as it has very little protein, which is not going to help much.

2.Soy Milk We love soybeans! Not just because of its sweet and flavourful taste, but the benefits they provide to us. The proteins in soy milk actually help in decreasing your bad cholesterol and increasing your good cholesterol. If you’re not a fan of cow’s milk, but looking for an alternative, then soy milk would be the best choice.

3.Whole Milk Cholesterol minder, this is not your milk! Whole milk contains plenty of vitamins, calcium, proteins, potassium, carbohydrates and fats. It seems like they have the perfect distribution of nutrients, but its saturated fat will actually increase your cholesterol level. However, this is a great milk for kids up to two years old.

4.Skim Milk Why would you drink skim milk if you do not wish to limit your fat or calorie intake? All the fat is nearly removed from skim milk, and therefore has lower levels of fat soluble vitamins, especially vitamin A. If you think skim milk is good for health, then you’re taking the wrong path because drinking skim milk can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

5.Organic Milk Do consider organic milk if you’re a fan of milk because it is free of hormones, pesticides and antibiotics. Moreover, it also has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids that help to reduce inflammation and to improve cognition and cardiovascular health.

wellness by ivy chin

6.Raw Milk

9.Hemp Milk

Attention to all children, pregnant women and the elderly, please do not consume raw milk. Although it is cow’s milk and is similar to whole milk, it doesn’t share the same benefits. In fact, there is a risk of taking in bacteria because it is not pasteurised. Besides, raw milk also has more calories and fat than pasteurised milk.

Let us clear your misconception with hemp milk now. Yes, it is made from the same plant as marijuana. But don’t get the wrong idea, it won’t make you high. Instead, it can make you a little healthier. Hemp milk is naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps to improve heart health and normal brain function.

7.Coconut Milk

10.Rice Milk

Don’t ever think about using coconut milk as a replacement for milk. You may love coconut milk in all sort of ways, but your waistline won’t. However, it can be used as an egg or cream substitute.

Here comes another replacement for dairy. Rice milk is actually considered as a healthy beverage because it contains less fat than regular milk and is free from cholesterol. However, it barely has any calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals. In addition, it has a significant amount of carbohydrates.

8.Goat Milk For those who are lactose intolerant, goat milk is a good alternative. It has more calcium and magnesium than cow’s milk, but also has significantly higher saturated fat. Apart from that, some people may find it tastes unpleasant.

The joy of theme parks

The year wraps up, your semester has ended and your parents are ready to take off from work. What is the best way to celebrate both family time and the holiday season? We say, theme parks! Plan a trip with your family to go around Malaysia and visit all the theme parks that we have.

LEGOLAND Waterpark Joaker Soaker

It’s the holiday season!

Yes, we highly recommend you all to party the season away in the chic and dapper outfits featured in the Fashion Trends and Guys’ Stuff section of this issue, but you still have to spare some quality time with your loved ones. Theme parks around Malaysia are the answers for this! As you have noticed, families with young children have always been filling up theme parks around the world, even Malaysia’s too. The history of funfairs, that began mushrooming in England around 1133, encouraged this tradition. Parents will gather, chit-chat, and together with their offspring enjoy various entertainments on offer such as freak shows, acrobatics, as well as acts of spirit-summoning (conjuring). 64

Malaysian families, on the other hand, enjoy theme parks because we love to have fun! It’s true that we will get super tired once we’re home, but the unforgettable moments are irreplaceable. The number of theme parks is growing, and unsurprisingly, they have become one of our country’s major tourist attractions. Legoland, for instance, has attracted massive amounts of tourists from around Asia and beyond, as it is the only Legoland representative in South East Asia. Yes, we all love the block men!

1. Legoland

Located down south in Johor Bahru, Legoland is the only one of its kind in South East Asia. It is one of the main tourism attractions in

Peninsular Malaysia, explaining the rapidly increasing number of tourists in Malaysia. Consisting of both a water park and a theme park, Legoland features many attractions, namely the heart-stopping and awesome The Dragon rollercoaster. But of course, the main draw is the Mini Land! The plethora of scaled down, Lego blocks construction of many iconic and instantly recognisable Asian historical landmarks is seriously incredible and would take your breath away. Once the park has entertained and tired you out, relax and unwind in Legoland’s in-house hotel. Let the colours and themes in each room bring the kid out of you. And don’t worry; the beds are not made of Lego blocks. So let’s start packing up those shorts and tanks for the whole family!

BEEF BOLOGNESE

THEORY’S CURRY LAKSA

T

he Food Theory Kitchen (or simply Theory), was started by Malaysia’s own Chef Zam, in partnership with three individuals named Ms. Su, Mr. Rodney and Mr. Ling; with the goal of providing delicious and affordable fusion cuisine to the masses. The group currently operates three branches- one in Kampung Baru, another in the University Malaya Medical Centre and the one I visited at Pusat Perdagangan Dana 1, Petaling Jaya. The menu offers a large selection of dishes to choose from, including multiple varieties of pasta, chicken and rice dishes that will satisfy even the most adventurous of diners. One of the most requested dishes is the Creamy Butter Chicken Spaghetti, which is affordably priced at RM10.90. After tasting it, it was easy to know why - the chicken was well cooked and tender, and soaking in the thick, creamy sauce. This dish was garnished with a bit of red chilli, making it slightly spicy. However, the spiciness complemented the spaghetti and buttery sauce. Another popular dish is the Theory’s Curry Laksa that’s priced at RM9.90. With a mix of bihun and noodles, the Laksa includes a liberal dash of crunchy vegetables that go well with its flavourful, though not too spicy soup. If one does find it lacking in kick, you can always add in the extra chilli sauce provided for that extra “oomph”. The Sunshine Fish Fillet with Mash, at RM 14.90, was one dish that really caught my attention. The fish itself is lightly fried and is served on top of a bed of mash with a small salad for a little more variety. From that description, it may not sound like much, but the sauce accompanying the dish is really something else. Described as a blend of lemon and butter, the tang of the sauce goes extremely well with the slightly rough texture of the fried fish. In some ways, it does taste like sunshine. Next up is the Beef Bolognese, which is a simple spaghetti dish cooked with beef tomato sauce. How it tastes however might surprise you- along with the standard flavourful mix of beef and tomato, there was a hint of sweetness

SUNSHINE FISH FILLET

BUTTER CHICKEN SPAGHETTI

that I couldn’t quite pin down. It was quite the experience, tasting a hint of the exotic with something as intimately familiar as Beef Bolognese. This dish is priced at RM9.90. I also managed to try the Daily Special, which is priced RM12.90 and comes with iced tea. It is usually a serving of Chicken Chop with daily variations with the sauce. On the day that I was there, Chicken Chop with Button Mushrooms was on the menu. The chicken itself was well cooked, with a little singeing on the skin, leaving the meat tender with a bit of crunch on the outside. The mashed potatoes it was served with goes well with the chicken, soaking up excess juice and sauce that exuded from the mushrooms and meat. The mushrooms were also cooked just right, giving out bursts of flavour in the mouth while not being burnt or undercooked, as mushrooms are prone to be. Food Theory does not serve any appetizers or desserts, though there are a large variety of drinks available. Highlights include the Root Beer Float that goes for RM3.50 and the Iced English Tea that’s priced at RM2.50 and served free with the aforementioned Daily Special. The furnishings and the décor do not stand out too much, which is a good thing if you’re a minimalist. That being said, the focus should be on the food itself, and I can personally say that they’ve managed to stick to their philosophy and mission – to provide delicious and affordable food to the masses.

DAILY SPECIAL

Food Theory in Pusat Perdagangan Dana 1, Petaling Jaya, is open from 11am to 8pm on weekdays and 3pm on Saturdays. Unfortunately, they’re closed on Sundays. The branch in University Malaya Medical Centre is open from 9am to 8pm every day, while the one located in Kampung Baru is open 11am to 12am every day. Peak hours are usually during lunch and dinner time on working days, so be sure to get there early for seats!

Shopaholic To The Stars

The First Phone Call From Heaven

AUTHOR: Sophie Kinsella

AUTHOR: Mitch Albom

Kill Your Boss AUTHOR: Shane Kuhn

This is the latest addition to the bestselling Shopaholic series. The story starts off with Becky Brandon moving to L.A. with her twoyear-old daughter Minnie. They’re there to support Sophie Kinsella Becky’s husband, Luke, who recently relocated to the City of Angels to handle PR for famous actress Sage Seymour. Knowing Becky, no bedding-in period is required in her new port-of-call; she embraces the A-list lifestyle and all its glam and vanity with both hands wide open. Readers are taken on her hilarious (and often ending up in epic failure) adventures through the streets and stages of Hollywood – from celebrity sightings and autographs, indulgent yoga retreats to the-sky-is-the-limit shopping trips in Rodeo Drive – yet through it all, you’d be rooting for her! However, beneath all that superficial glam, what she really wants to become is Sage’s personal stylist. As fate would have it, her stylist ambition becomes a reality, only that she’s offered to dress up Sage’s arch rival instead. Yes, Becky is looking forward to all she’s ever dreamed of, from working with famous celebs to gracing red carpet premieres… but at what cost to her and those around her? 68

Also known as The Intern’s Handbook, this creative debut novel by celebrated A m e r i c a n s c r e e n w r i t e r, director and producer Shane Kuhn reads like a how-to manual shane kuhn crossed with dark satirical actionthriller undertones. Whether Kuhn wrote it with major motion picture in mind is no longer a debate, as the book’s rights have been snapped up by Sony Pictures. It tells the story from our protagonist John Lago’s POV. As a 25-year old intern at a prestigious Manhattan law firm, he slaves 80 hours a week getting coffee, answering phones and doing all the usual s**t jobs actual employees are too lazy to do. Little do the lazy, actual employees know that John was placed in their firm by HR Inc., an elite ‘placement agency’ that doubles as a network of assassins for hire who take down high-profile corporate targets. What better way to infiltrate the target company than by being a nondescript intern whose name no one remembers even if their lives depended on it? As John chronicles his final assignment in this firm, he lays it out in a DIY manual-, part confessional-style that’s laced with dry wit and useful ‘tips’. Readers can look forward to a rollercoaster thrill ride when the proverbial s**t hits the fan, gloriously spiked with copious amounts of violence, black humour and I-didn’t-see-that-coming twists.

After reading this book from acclaimed writer Mitch Albom (The Five People You Meet In Heaven, The Timekeeper), we promise that you would never look at the humble telephone Mitch Albom the same way again. It all starts in the small town of Coldwater, Michigan, where mysterious and unexplained phone calls start occurring to specific residents. Specific residents whose loved ones or acquaintances are dead. Like Katherine, who hears from her beloved sister, Tess who hears from her mother, and the police chief who hears from his son who was killed in Afghanistan. The messages are brief yet reassuring, “The end is not the end.” Sully Harding, a disgraced former military pilot who withdrew to his hometown of Coldwater a few months earlier after the death of his wife, is still a bitter and angry man. And he is worried about his young son who has taken to awaiting a call from heaven from his dead mother. As the news of this supernatural phenomenon spread, thousands throng to this little community, and Coldwater quickly becomes a media hotspot. Sully takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of this unexplainable event – is it a hoax, or the workings of something beyond human comprehension? The First Phone Call From Heaven is a beautifully moving tale of faith and redemption, loss and recovery, and the eternal power of love and hope.

Philips A5-PRO

DECEMBER 2014

Heavy Duty Philips A5-PRO Today, there are so many products that are celebrity endorsed and headphones are no exception. Though they may be endorsed, it doesn’t mean that it’s good. We take a look at the Philips A5-PRO this month, which was developed in collaboration with DJ Armin van Buuren, to find out just how good it is.

Design/Features As mentioned above, the Philips A5-PRO was designed in collaboration with acclaimed Dutch DJ, Armin van Buuren. Because of this, the A5-PRO has some design elements that make it the perfect headphones for DJs. Among these design cues include the use of anodised aluminium on its frame, which makes this headphones look very sleek. In terms of comfort, there’s a headband cover that’s made out of soft silicone, which is very comfortable, even after hours of use. However, they are slightly heavy, as they weigh just under 400g. It’s also worth mentioning that the A5-PRO is collapsible, making it easy for you to carry it around.

Audio Quality There’s no denying that headphones that are designed for DJs aren’t targeted at audiophiles. However, the audio quality for the A5-PRO is very respectable. We found that these headphones are capable of handling the lows, mids and even highs very well. The mids are precise and warm, while the bass is clear and pronounced, without being overemphasized. As for treble, it’s clear and well defined, without being shrill. We tested it on a variety of tunes, and we are happy to report that the A5-PRO is capable of 72

delivering great sound in almost all genres. Be it in a classical tune like Martynas’s ‘Allegro’, Fall Out Boy’s upbeat ‘The Phoenix’ and the delectable beats of Goldfish and Blink’s ‘Echoes/Triangle’, the A5-PRO delivered without issues. For a pair of DJ headphones, another important aspect is sound isolation. Thanks to the large cushion pads, sound isolation on the A5-PRO is fantastic.

Connectivity The A5-PRO has a port on each of its ear cup, giving you the extra flexibility to attach the cable to the left or right ear cup, which is particularly useful if you’re a DJ. Speaking of the detachable cable, the A5-PRO has a coiled cable that’s 4.7M in length, giving you the extra freedom that you’d need as a DJ. It also comes with a 6.3mm threaded adapter, which is a must for any DJ as it allows you to plug the A5-PRO into just about any audio device you can find.

Specifications • 50mm high definition neodymium drivers • 10Hz – 24kHz frequency response • 1.3M-4.7M detachable audio cable • 16 Ohm Impedance

We liked:

Great Sound Excellent build quality Sleek design Foldable

JVC HA-FX850

wiredup

DECEMBER 2014

Au Naturel JVC HA-FX850 JVC has always been known for quality consumer electronics, and one of their latest in-ear earphones, the HA-FX850 does not disappoint. Learn more about this highly unique earphones right here.

Design/Features The stand out design element of the HA-FX850 is its real wood casing, giving it a rustic and down to earth/traditional feel, which is hard to find in modern electronics. The bronze metal tip at the end also emphasizes adds a premium look. We really liked the overall look and feel of the HAFX850. The heads of the HA-FX850 are detachable with a firm tug, allowing you to store the heads and wires separately and also enabling users to find replacement wires much more easily.

Audio Quality The sound quality of the HA-FX850 is superb, and it ranks among the top of all the earphones that we’ve tested to this day. The wooden drivers in the HA-FX850 allow it to be one of the most tonally accurate earphones on the market. The mid range is especially clear, making it especially suited for classical music lovers. To test this earphones, we played Beethoven’s ‘Ninth Symphony’ and Bach’s ‘Cello Suite No.1 in G’. The bass and treble of the HA-FX850, while not as pronounced as the mids, were still exceptional. The bass is good, though a little bit of persuasion from an equalizer is needed to truly bring out what the HA-FX850 is capable of delivering. The treble on the other hand, is very detailed, without being overly emphasized. 74

| CAMPUS PLUS

We also tested other tracks with this earphones, including Santana’s ‘Saideira’ and Imagine Dragons ‘Underdog’. In both songs, the audio quality was once again superb, but we do think that bass was slightly underwhelming. As for sound isolation, we found that the HA-FX850 does a decent job at keeping noise out, but due to its vented design, some ambient noise does leak in, which is great for when you’re in the office or at home and have little noise pollution.

Connectivity As mentioned above, the HA-FX850 has detachable wires, which makes it easy for you to replace the wires in the event they get damaged. It comes with a cable that 1.2m long, which is the standard length of cables today, so there’s no complaints here. It also makes use of a 3.5mm jack, making it compatible with most smartphones on the market today.

Specifications • 11mm wood dome diaphragm drivers • 6 Hz-45 kHz frequency response • 16 ohm Impedance • 1.2m detachable audio cable

We liked: Great sound, especially for mids Beautifully designed Detachable wires

We disliked: Pricey

Multi-Talented Recorder Philips VTR7000 If you’re the type who forgets stuff easily in lectures, or you’d just like to record the entire lecture, then you may want to get your hands on a voice recorder. The Philips VTR7000 may just be what you’re looking for.

Philips VTR7000

wiredup

DECEMBER 2014

The directional microphone gives you additional precision, picking up sound directly where it’s pointed at, while the wireless microphone has a range of up to 40m, making the Philips VTR7000 a very versatile voice recorder. One of the more interesting features on the VTR7000 is its ability to record phone (land line) conversations using the bundled telephone adapter box. While it may not be useful for everybody, it’s still a rather cool feature.

Audio Quality

Design/Features As with many modern voice recorders, the Philips VTR7000 is highly slim and portable. Rectangular in design, this voice recorder fits easily into the pockets of your jeans and if you still use them, pencil boxes. Up front, it has an LCD display, along with the menu button and media control cluster. On the left side, you’ll find the integrated microphone, a mini USB port for you to connect to a PC, the power switch and ‘Hold’ button, which prevents accidental button pressing. On the right, there’s the delete button, the scroll button and the record button itself. There’s also a kick-stand behind, for when you’re leaving it on a table. In terms of features, this voice recorder is loaded to the brim. First of all, it has 4GB of internal storage, which gives you, according to Philips, up to 1,082 hours worth of recordings. Apart from that, it comes bundled with two additional microphones – one is a directional microphone, while the other is a wireless microphone. Of course, it has an integrated microphone system of its own, so you can still do recordings in the event you left the additional microphones at home.

We tested the VTR7000 by firstly using all three microphones to record a random conversation in a quiet environment. We then repeated this, in an environment with as much ambient noise as possible. After reviewing our recordings, we found that the directional microphone provides the best audio quality, in both environments. The integrated and wireless microphones are equally as good as the directional microphone in the quiet environment, but in the noisy environment, they recorded a small amount of ambient noise.

Connectivity The aforementioned mini USB port lets you connect directly to a PC for easy file transfers. There are also two 3.5mm jacks, one for input and the other for output.

Specifications • OLED display • 4GB internal storage • Supports bit rates of : 768kbps, 128kbps, 32kbps and 8kbps • Integrated lithium-ion battery

We liked: Great audio quality Small and light Highly versatile thanks to multiple

microphone systems

Versatility Redefined Edifier M3280BT

Edifier M3280BT

wiredup

DECEMBER 2014

In this day of age, having a speaker system that can play audio from multiple audio sources has become somewhat of a necessity. The Edifier M3280BT is one such speaker system, with its two 3.5mm input sockets as well as Bluetooth functionality. Find out more about this speaker in this review.

Design/Features The Edifier M3280BT is a 2.1 speaker system that does not stand out in terms of looks. Its satellite speakers look pretty generic, and though the stands of these speakers look like they’re made of metal, they’re unfortunately made out of plastic. Take a look at the rear of the right satellite speaker and you’ll find a single 3.5mm output, as well as a treble and bass knobs to fine-tune the characteristics of the audio to your liking. On the left side of this same speaker, there are three buttons – two to control the volume and one to mute it.

Audio Quality In terms of audio quality, there’s no denying that these speakers are well tuned for almost all types of audio. We first tried it with some jazzy tunes like Monique Klemann’s ‘The Look of Love’ and found that these speakers perform rather well with this genre, but the mids and highs are slightly muted, slightly affecting overall presence. In more upbeat songs like Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sing’, these speakers sounded slightly better, especially when we pumped the volume up a bit. We then played some 76

| CAMPUS PLUS

symphonic music, where we found the speakers to be able to rather accurately reproduce many of the instruments, though soundstaging could have been better. We also tested it with a number of different movies, where the speakers performed decently, though we did have to turn up the volume slightly to be able to hear the dialogue properly. Overall, we’re happy with the audio quality of the M3280BT.

Connectivity Designed to be versatile, this speaker system offers a variety of connection options. As mentioned above, it has Bluetooth functionality, in addition to the standard auxiliary connection. Like many of its newer brethren, this speaker system has two auxiliary input connect sockets – one for a connection to the PC and another for any other audio source. If you’re curious, there is indeed a difference between the two input options. The PC connection has a higher sensitivity rating, while the standard aux input has less. This is to ensure that you’re getting better volume, regardless of the audio source.

Specifications • 36W total RMS • 52Hz – 18kHz frequency response • 2x aux input, Bluetooth connectivity supported

We liked: Adjustable bass and treble Bluetooth connection makes it easy to

play songs wirelessly

Multiple auxiliary connections

We disliked: Mid-range could have been better

A Drive-by of Iconic Cars from Film

DECEMBER 2014

dreamcars by aaron pereira

Drive Me to the

Car-nival (Part 2) Whether you care for cars of not, when these vehicles drive by, you will be blasted with amazement. Here is the first part of a list of cars (real or unreal) that have managed to carve their name in history – well film history at least.

1

C

ertain rides are unmemorable, like that car in that movie from sometime back – notice how even the movie title is forgotten. Then, there are rides that make you remember movies! Here are some (not all) of those vehicles, in no particular order, because even we found this list too difficult to rate.

2

3

1. Ford Mustang

3. Ford Econoline

4. Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

This classic American muscle car, which turned half a century old this year (2014), has starred in hundreds of movies and series. Then there is the legendary car chase scene done by Steve McQueen in Bullitt (which you might not have heard of; but is definitely worth the watch!) When Will Smith was evading zombies in I Am Legend, when Nicholas Cage was evading police with ‘Eleanor’ in the remake of Gone In 60 Seconds (as well as in the original version), when the Knight Rider series was remade, it was only in the Mustang that they trusted.

This van may not be the fastest, or the most functional, but it definitely looks cool! Famous examples can be seen in films such as Dumb and Dumber, where the Econoline is made to look like a shaggy dog. A vehicle that dog lovers all over would appreciate. Then, the Econoline is also used to transport a more well-known dog, who also happens to be a detective! That’s right, Scooby Doo also approves of the Econoline as it is used as the Mystery Machine that served the group of ghost hunters.

When a car talks, and has attitude, it rarely gets cut from a list of cool cars. This car is most recognised in the original series of Knight Rider playing the role of KITT. Apart from its firepower, KITT also had features such as Turbo Boost (allowing quick bursts of speed or jumping over obstacles), the ability to drive ‘himself’, a front mounted scanner bar that allowed KITT to ‘see’ and ‘molecular bonded shell’ body armour that was invulnerable to diamond headed drills and most artillery and explosive blasts. Need we say more? Oh, it’s also the car featured in the classic film, Smokey and the Bandit, albeit an older version.

2. Cadillac Miller-Meteor This is the car that you would want to see around, whenever something strange is happening in your neighbourhood. Originally produced as an ambulance, the car got its 15 seconds of fame in the old hit movie, Ghostbusters. In the original movie, the main character pays $4800 for it and claims it needs a plethora of repairs. In his own words, it needs “suspension work and shocks, brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear end... new rings, mufflers, a little wiring....” After the modifications, the Ectomobile was born and used to ferry the Ghostbusters and their ghost-capturing equipment around New York City.

5. The DeLorean DMC-12

4

5

We will have to visit the past, to know about this vehicle. The DeLorean DMC-12 was the only model produced by the The DeLorean Motor Company. What makes this car part of this prestigious list, you ask? Well, it is perhaps the most prominent time travelling car. That’s right, in the Back To The Future trilogy, this sports mobile with gull-wing doors and a fiberglass “underbody”, to which non-structural brushed stainless steel panels are affixed also houses a flux capacitor (which makes time travel possible – according to Dr. Emmett Brown, the car’s creator – for those of you who didn’t know.)
