s February 14th draws near, a warm and fuzzy feeling begins to fill our tummies. Yes, Valentine’s Day is here! Made especially popular by Hallmark, it’s a day where friends and couples alike celebrate their feelings for each other. This Valentine’s Day, however, we at Campus Plus are celebrating our freedom to love and paying tribute to those who love without and beyond boundaries. Our cover story this month discusses the various kinds of universal love that are mostly unselfish, genuine and not so ordinary. The fact is, most of us are fortunate to love and be loved by in return but unfortunately, there are others who don’t have that luxury. What we mean by that are the often unnoticed elements such as the environment, animals, old folks, etc. Luckily, there are dedicated volunteers armed with unconditional love and patience, who are always ready to care for the needy, save forests, protect helpless animals and feed the hungry. Meet these volunteers, who give everything and expect nothing in return, on pages 38 till 43. How many times have you wished that you could save someone’s life? What if we told you that you didn’t need to be a Marvel or DC Comics superhero to be able to do so? We looked at one of the most heroic forms of unselfish love in our “Wellness” feature (page 65). Did you know that more than 10,000 patients in Malaysia are on the national waiting list for kidney, heart, liver and lung transplants but only 0.81% of our country’s population are registered organ donors? If you could pledge your organs to save a stranger, maybe not immediately but in years to come, would you? What if we told you that you (yes, you!) could give someone another chance at life and at almost no cost to you except sheer courage and love? Speaking of “at almost no cost”, we’ve also tossed in a few easy Valentine’s Day recipes in our “Food Directory” (pages 68 and 69). Eating out on Valentine’s Day can be quite cut-throat i.e. overpriced dinner sets, and we’re pretty sure that you don’t want to be sharing your special occasion with 30 other couples in the restaurant. Plus, aside from saving money, you also get to impress your date as you dish out your culinary skills! We say it’s a win-win situation. Also, if “just having dinner” is not enough, we’ve compiled a list of “Top 5 Romantic Getaways” in our “Travel” pages (pages 66 and 67). Just a little bit of luxury on Valentine’s Day that’s not too expensive and yet, could turn out to be a getaway to remember. Don’t say we didn’t share!

5th Annual Global Peace Convention 2013 Marks First Malaysian Appearance

Shell Eco-Marathon® Asia Unveiled Top universities from Malaysia unveiled their hand-built, fuel-efficient vehicles for the Shell EcoMarathon® Asia. A symbolic send-off for student teams representing the nation was held recently at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. Officiating the event was Pemandu (Performance Management and Delivery Unit) Oil, Gas & Energy, Financial Services and Government associate director Kelvin Tan. Also present were Shell Malaysia Trading general manager Downstream Retail Sales Leslie Ng; UM’s deputy vicechancellor (Development) Professor Dr Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan), participating teams and other guests. The Shell Eco-Marathon® competition invites students to design, build and test the most fuel-efficient and environment-friendly vehicles. 19 teams comprising varsity students will be flying the Malaysian flag at the Shell Eco-Marathon® Asia 2014 from 6th to 9th February. The Malaysian contingent is made up of teams from Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan, Penang, Pahang, Johore, Malacca, Kedah and Sarawak. The Shell EcoMarathon® began its Asian leg in 2010 at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur. Since then it has become an opportunity for young and aspiring Malaysians to showcase their ingenuity in the field of car engineering. The event will now move to the streets of Manila from 2014 to 2016.

Competition

A two-day event based on the classic 90’s video game, Bomberman, not only fulfilled its vision of inculcating confidence, trust and determination in participants in a “fun but sweaty way”, but also rewarded the organising team with the grand prize of RM10,000 in the Masters of Rev Up organised by Revive Isotonic. Comprising students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Team DF’s outstanding organising abilities, teamwork, communication and planning skills in executing “Rev Up Bomberman Challenge 2013” set them apart from 15 other finalists and rewarded them in the form of a RM10,000 scholarship from Permanis Sdn Bhd, the manufacturers of Revive Isotonic. The 11-member team comprising degree-level students also won the opportunity to intern with Permanis. The event, held at the UTAR campus in Kampar, Perak, stayed true to the strategic, maze-based video game and had over 300 UTAR students participating in a series of challenges that tested their teamwork, intelligence and physical skills. The graduation party saw all 16 finalists being honoured for their efforts with certificates and trophies. The Global Peace Foundation’s 5th annual Global Peace Convention was launched in December, cohosted by Global Peace Festival Malaysia and the Department of National Unity and Integration in the Prime Minister’s Department, marking the first time this annual event is being hosted in Malaysia. Themed “Unity in Diversity – Building Social Cohesion for Sustainable Peace through Universal Aspirations, Principles and Values”, the convention addresses an issue that is timely for the world, where peace and development are increasingly threatened by religious and ethnic conflicts. The convention highlighted the central role of universal principles and shared values for achieving unity in diversity and resolving identity-based conflicts. These principles and values were then given practical expression through initiatives and projects that: sought to encourage interfaith partnerships; strengthen families and communities; and foster a culture of service, particularly among youth. The convention provides a dynamic and compelling platform both for ideas and for the sharing of practical experiences that can help promote peace and development. That platform is shared by leaders from the government, faith-based organisations, business, universities, and civil society, working in cooperative partnership. HELP University Cross Border Programme HELP

programme took a big step when a sports and cultural exchange programme was held with Hatyai University of Thailand last month. This program is nothing new as in 2011, HELP University students paid a visit to Khon Khen University of Thailand. The university’s entourage comprised the Department of Student Affairs director Lt Cdr (retired) Anthonysamy Silvarajoo, four Department of Student Affairs staff and 39 students. They visited the campus and held a sports and cultural exchange.

INTI International College Subang bagged two coveted awards in the cluster-based category for general programmes and services at the recent MyQuest 2012/2013 awards ceremony which recognises excellence among private colleges in Malaysia. The six-star, cluster-based award for general programme recognises INTI International College Subang’s outstanding efforts in delivering quality pre-university pathways. This includes the American University Programme, which has seen the progression and transfer of thousands of young INTI graduates to leading American universities. The second award is for INTI International College Subang’s excellence in services, particularly for its Hospitality programmes which are in collaboration with leading hospitality institutions in Australia and the United States - the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School and Kendall College School of Culinary Arts. MyQuest evaluations are carried out every two years to measure the strength and performance of participating private colleges in Malaysia based on several categories. This year, over 200 private colleges in Malaysia were shortlisted and ranked in three main categories - college-based, cluster-based and international student readiness. 10

At the recent Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards (OCLA) ceremony, nine Sunway A-Level students were awarded certificates for their excellent performance in the June 2013 Cambridge examination series. Students from Sunway College who received the Top in the World Award for CIE AS level were; Daphne Ngan Hwee Ern for Accounting, Ang Eer Yin, Ho Shi Ying, Kuan Wei Jee, Loh Khang Yee and Tan Tee Toon for Mathematics while Leong Wei Cheng and Dawn Soon Lyn Hui from Sunway College Johor Baru each received the Top in Malaysia Award for the General Paper. In the CIE A-level, Pan Eu Fern received the Top in Malaysia Award for Psychology. All the award winners received their certificates from Deputy Minister of Education 1 Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching and regional director (Asia Pacific) Cambridge International Examinations Ben Schmidt. Also present was Cambridge International Examinations (Malaysia) senior schools development manager Ng Kim Huat.Overall, a whopping 40% scored straight As in the A and AS levels. For many years running, Sunway A-Level students have done exceptionally well in the Cambridge GCE A-Level examinations.

UCSI Duo Wins

Schlumberger Competition Two students from UCSI University (UCSI) clinched first place in the Schlumberger Ocean Plug-in Competition 2013, edging out tough competition from four other universities in Malaysia and Singapore. These include Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Curtin University (Sarawak Campus), and National University of Singapore. Bagging RM15,000 and medals, the two-man team – called Nonit – was ecstatic about the win. Strong even in the face of over 20 judges – encompassing Schlumberger representatives and customers worldwide – and other competitors, Nonit stood out in terms of application of technical knowledge, plug-in feasibility and creativity. With this win, the duo will compete against other national champions in the Schlumberger SIS Global Forum 2014 in Barcelona, Spain. Such competitions equip students with sound technical knowledge even outside the field of their study.

KDU College Penang Spreads The Cheer The Engineering Society of KDU College Penang recently organised a two-week charity drive, “SHOE BOX!! A gift wrapped with love”. They collected more than 600 Christmas gifts from its staff, students, family members and friends. Members of the Engineering Society and the Engineering Department lecturer Dr Wendy Chin visited St Joseph’s Home, Crystal Home, Seri Cahaya and Betheseda Home in Penang to celebrate Christmas on Dec 21 and 25. The children were thrilled when Santa’s helpers from KDU Penang descended from their four-wheeled “sleigh” laden with colourfully wrapped presents in all shapes and sizes as well as McDonald’s Happy Meals. These jolly Santa’s helpers also filled the homes with Christmas carols belted out in several languages. 12

3M ESPE, the dental division from 3M, recently announced the winners of their sixth Intervarsity Prosthodontic Competition. Co-organised with the Malaysian Association of Prosthodontics (MAP), the 2012/2013 final competition entitled “To Crown or Not to Crown” saw participation from eight of Malaysia’s top dental schools. The participating final year students were from University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), International Medical University (IMU), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), AIMST University and MAHSA College. The panel of distinguished judges comprised Health Ministry’s restorative dental specialist Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin; Malaysian Armed Forces Dental Services Prosthodontic Division head Colonel Mohamad Asri Din and Dr Abu Razali Saini, a general practitioner with a passion for aesthetic dentistry and dental photography. They assessed the participants based on their case presentation skills and a written case report. “The students would normally not have the opportunity to explore the many different products in their case studies due to the investment needed. However, 3M ESPE made it possible by sponsoring these products for the competition. This has also enabled the students to evaluate products based on the value preposition that it delivers rather than on prices alone,” said USIM lecturer Dr Wan Nor Syariza. The champion of this year’s competition was Sharifah Nor Aishah from USIM. “It felt surreal when my name was called as this is the first time I have represented USIM in 3M ESPE’s Prosthodontic competition,” said Sharifah after the prize-giving ceremony at Oasis Square, Ara Damansara. Although Sharifah’s patient has been treated by her for a little more than two years, Sharifah only spent three months preparing her case presentation for the competition. Sharifah also managed to showcase her interest in photography during the competition. Aside from the unique opportunity of gaining additional professional value from her exposure to the very latest innovations from 3M ESPE, Sharifah was also the recipient of a new iPad 16 GB Wifi 3G to further assist her in her dental career. Aimee Lee from AIMST University and Yew Kai Shang from the International Medical Centre (IMU) won second and third places respectively. First organised in 2008, the annual Prosthodontic Competition is an initiative which allows 3M to provide aspiring dental practitioners with hands-on experience with the very latest technology and products in dental care. This, in turn will provide them with the necessary skills to gain a competitive advantage in their careers. More than 600 students participated in the annual competition to date. Table Tennis Champions Kejohanan Ping Pong IPT 2013, a national-level championship was organised by Majlis Sukan Kolej Komuniti (Maskom) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education at the Universiti Teknologi Mara, Penang campus. Organised for the fourth time, 45 teams from colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning from all over Malaysia took part in the competition. The UTAR team of five players won three main categories with four gold medals and cash prizes. The gold medals were won through the male and female individual and mixed doubles partner categories. Foundation in Arts student, Alisa Wong Yoke Mei, played superbly to clinch the gold in the female individual category. Her golden feat was followed by Foundation in Science student, Edward Ling Hung Hui, who secured the gold medal in the male individual category. They

also took home RM700 each. The UTAR team powered to further victory through the excellent performances of Banking and Finance student, Teng Wei Ni and Foundation in Arts student, Soong Jun Fai, in the mixed doubles partner category. They won two additional gold medals and RM2,000. The team was coached by team manager Adrin Yeap Wai Kuan, a staff of the UTAR Sports and Recreational Unit.

MUFY’s World Top Scorers

Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) at Sunway saw 422 students graduating in December 2013. In the November 2013 exams, MUFY students at Sunway College were the world’s top in 18 out of 22 MUFY subjects with 13 students qualifying for the Monash University Entrance Scholarship. Two students, Grace Ong Sing Ling and Lau Sue Een, achieved the highest overall score of 96%, based on eight subjects, out-performing students at all other MUFY programme providers worldwide. Currently into its 14th year, MUFY at Sunway is an international programme, in terms of curriculum and recognition and with student enrolment from over 40 countries including Germany, Egypt, Philippines, US, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Singapore and Indonesia. To date, close to 10,000 students have graduated from the MUFY programme at Sunway College. Like Monash University, MUFY at Sunway offers many extra-curricular activities that ensure a student’s lessons are relevant to the real world. Through such immersion and efforts, students deepen their understanding of the world and are instilled with community-mindedness. MUFY at Sunway College is the largest and most established provider among all MUFY providers in Australia, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

A senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), Dr. Sujan Debnath, has been given the honour of delivering a keynote speech at the International Conference on Material Processing and Characterisation (ICMPC 2014) in Hyderabad, India from 8th to 9th March 2014. The conference is being organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology (GRIET) in Hyderabad. The conference topics to be covered include advanced metal forming, bending, welding and casting techniques; advanced machining processes; composites and intermetallics; SMART materials; designs for manufacturing sensors and condition monitoring, FEA in materials processing and characterisation. The conference proceedings will be published by Elsevier Journal ‘Procedia Material Science’ and will be available at www.sciencedirect.com. A 40ft-long structure complete with a security shack and a forklift stationed in the middle of Citta Mall’s outdoor carpark drew many curious stares from intrigued onlookers, while skaters took up the challenge and practised hard under the blazing sun to vie to be crowned this year’s Vans King of Gap! Back for the third time, this year’s gap was themed to emulate a warehouse scene, featuring props you would find in an old warehouse – tyres, old timber, wood crates and wheel barrows. The built-in security shack completed the theme and a forklift was specially-rented to amp up the excitement for Vans King of Gap. This year’s participants had a strong Singaporean presence as well as some hailing from Indonesia. First South Korean Couple

Of 2014

South Korean actor Lee Seung-gi (of “Strong Heart” fame) and K-Pop idol girl group SNSD Girls’ Generation member Im Yoona are the first celebrity couple to surface in 2014, reported the country’s media. Lee Seung-gi’s management agency, Hook Entertainment, confirmed the news after a media outlet reported that the two have been seen together since October 2013. The report claimed that 26-year-old Lee would pick the 23-year-old Im Yoona up and then drive to various parks. Hook Entertainment also asked the media to give them space as they had just started dating. Meanwhile, Im Yoona’s group mate, Soo-young openly commented on “One Night of TV Entertainment”: “Well, it seems the public is looking on their relationship very positively so I am very pleased.” SM Entertainment (home to SNSD Girls’ Generation), added: “The two are getting to know each other.” Fans, on the other hand, were surprised but were also quick to wish the couple well. Some even claimed that they saw it coming because Lee has mentioned on an interview that Im Yoona is just his type while Im Yoona has said that Lee was hers in a SNSD Girls’ Generation documentary.

No More Cold Feet for Sammi Hong Kong’s most popular on-off superstar couple, Andy Hui and Sammi Cheng have finally decided to become lifetime partners. However, getting Sammi Cheng to say, “Yes!” was no easy feat for 45-year-old Andy. The duo started dating in 1991 and it took Andy several tries at proposing before finally succeeding in persuading 40-year-old Sammi to marry him. By several, we mean about seven times. Andy had reportedly attempted to propose to Sammi Cheng on occasions such as New Year’s Eve, Christmas and Valentine’s Day parties. He even tried to casually ask for her hand in marriage while on vacation but was subsequently turned down. Finally, he tried his luck again in August 2013 during Sammi’s birthday party, which was attended by only close family members, where he showed up with a birthday cake, a bouquet of flowers and a diamond ring that was at least three carats! The rest, as they say, is history. Here’s wishing them the happy-ever-after they’ve been waiting for. Congratulations!

BlackBerry Lets Go Of Alicia

After a year-long collaboration that was meant to help grow business for BlackBerry, the smartphone company is parting ways with singer Alicia Keys. The 14-time Grammy-winner first came aboard as its global creative director. Her involvement with BlackBerry drew criticism from outsiders who said, contrary to the decidedly corporate title, Alicia was little more than a celebrity who was brought in to help promote the BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Over the year, she appeared at numerous corporate events, in promotional material, and she even announced that she would be working closely with app developers, designers, content creators, and others on creating original content. BlackBerry insisted that Alicia had a more direct involvement in its operations, including her work on a four-year scholarship programme that encouraged young women to enter specific science and technology fields. The celebrity endorsement is no longer a good fit as BlackBerry 10 was declared a flop. Perhaps it was a good business decision after all? This might even be a relief to Alicia herself. SIC Announces Big F1 Plans

Schumi Will No Longer Be The Same On 29th December 2013, Formula One legend Michael Schumacher met with an accident in the upmarket French Alpine resort of Meribel. Schumacher, or rather, more affectionately known as “Schumi” to his legions of fans, was on a skiing trip when he skied on a partially covered rock, lost his balance and slammed his head on another rock further down. He had a helmet on at that time but the impact was so strong that it split his helmet in two. Since then, the seven-time world champion has been in a Grenoble hospital with severe head injuries and has been put in a medically-induced coma. While Schumi is said to be more or less out of danger, the fact that the former racing driver is still in an induced coma could mean that his situation is still serious, even if he has been stabilised. Leading neurosurgeons from around the globe are also giving their opinions on Schumi’s condition, with one claiming that Michael Schumacher “will not be the same Schumacher” if he wakes up from his coma as a result of his severe brain trauma. Schumi’s manager, Sabine Kehm and Schumi’s family, on the other hand, have reassured the public that they are very happy and confident with the work of the team of doctors treating Michael, and that they trust them completely. They’ve also appealed for their family to be left in peace during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with Schumi and we pray he recovers soon!

What Is I

f you’ve never heard of the one and only hip hop battle series in Malaysia, TYGS is short for “Think You Got Skillz” and it’s an event series focusing on the battle aspect of hip hop. We hold DJ, emcee, beat, beatbox and b-boy battles that are open to anyone in Malaysia!

How did it all start? Back in ’08, TYGS found its humble beginning in Changkat Bukit Bintang inside the now defunct Cloth & Clef. There was a need to have a monthly live hip hop night and TYGS became the champion. Not only was there a focus on battle (back then it was just an emcee battle) but TYGS also became the only platform for up-and-coming hip hop artistes to perform.

Who can take part in TYGS? Many well-known artistes got their start at TYGS. Sona One, Karmal, Dose Two, Tactmatic, Aman Ra and more have all been a part of previous TYGS events. TYGS isn’t just for emcees anymore - we’ve opened the doors to b-boys, beat makers, beatboxers and in 2014, to DJs. Anyone is welcome to participate. Do you think you got skillz?

any of this is what you are planning to do on the big V-Day, you’re very fortunate to have special people in your lives that you love and are loved by. Then, there are the unfortunate many that don’t. That will include the environment and animals as well. Valentine’s Day is the day when love is celebrated in all its glory. Love is universal. This is especially true for volunteers, be they welfare or old folk’s home volunteers, animal shelter volunteers, or even environmental activists. To them, every day is Valentine’s Day as they take care of the needy, save forests, and protect helpless animals. It takes a lot of dedication, passion, and patience to do all that for free. And nothing says ‘love’ like giving your all without expecting anything in return.

Here we are once more in the month of February, when everyone is busy buying presents, flowers, chocolates, and going on expensive dinner dates with their loved ones.

Soup kitchens, animal shelters, orphanages, and forest reserves do exist in Malaysia but the number of volunteers are ‘sorely lacking’ as one media report stated. A survey showed that there are only seven registered volunteers per 1,000 Malaysians. Although there are about 135,000 full-fledged volunteers in Malaysia as of December 2012, the figure only represents a mere one per cent of youths aged above 15. Malaysians do show an interest in volunteerism but many say that more can be done to make it a part of the country’s mainstream culture.

One such organisation is Mercy Malaysia, which is involved in the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid to vulnerable communities. Mercy Malaysia has been actively involved in providing emergency assistance to affected populations. Campus Plus interviewed Damaris, a volunteer at Mercy Malaysia who was given an opportunity to volunteer as a facilitator in their School Preparedness Programme (SPP). SPP is a workshop focused on disaster preparedness, including practical tips for personal, family, as well as school preparedness during a disaster.

“Every volunteer experience is different – I seek to learn something new from each experience,” Damaris told us during the interview. She says she is happy to help people who might not currently have the means to help themselves and hopes to be able to go on a mission sometime in the future. On the topic of lack of volunteers in Malaysia, Damaris said “Not many people know as to where they can go to volunteer. Some don’t realise that every individual can make a difference. Other than helping people, you get to see the many facades of yourself. One thing volunteering has taught me is to be thankful for what I have. We are indeed very fortunate!” Volunteering is not an obligation. Yet many are practicing it and not only to bring meaningful, positive impacts on communities but also for one’s self. For example, volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a new skill. As Mahatma Ghandi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” It is never too late to learn new skills and there is no reason why you should stop adding to your knowledge just because you are in employment or have finished education. We humans are social creatures and not a single man or woman is an island. However, we sometimes take for granted the community we live in. Communities are suffering due to the

growth of secular societies but we can bridge that gap through volunteering. Volunteering is ultimately about helping others and having an impact on the wellbeing of others. What better way is there to connect with your community and give a little back? As a volunteer, you certainly return to society some of the benefits that society gives you. For all you students out there, an online survey showed that among 200 of the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading businesses:

Give And Learn Also, if you are thinking of a career change then volunteering is a perfect way to explore new fields. For example, if you have a career in computing but your ambition is to be a doctor, why not find out about volunteer opportunities at your local hospital? Another volunteer who was kind enough to share his experiences is Julian Saw who is a charity committee member for a company called Off Gamers. They work with Kechara Soup Kitchen on a monthly basis and have staff and committee members volunteer to assist in feeding the homeless around Kuala Lumpur. Julian volunteered with Kechara after he had heard about them from friends who were part of the soup kitchen before him. As a volunteer at Kechara, Julian’s responsibilities include food packing, organising food and basic necessities into different groups to be delivered, crowd

control at the soup kitchen, and also to answer questions the homeless might have and try to assist them with anything they might need. What Julian enjoys most about volunteering is to see people happy when he hands out the food or basic necessities. He says you can see the sincerity in them when they say ‘thank you’ and most of them actually have better manners compared to the more fortunate, apparently. “There are also valuable lessons to be learned. Never judge a book by its cover as everyone has a story, just like you. If you think you’re only giving, you’re actually receiving as well but in the form of enlightenment. Most importantly, volunteering reminds me not to take things for granted,” Julian said during an interview. He also said that Kechara would be a great place for first time volunteers to start out because of their team’s experience in handling extreme situations, their resources and safety protocols.

The Animals Need You Too Charity however, is not exclusively for humans. Many volunteers out there share a mutual love for animals that co-exist with us. Dogs, cats, horses, birds, even elephants have people fighting for their rights and wellbeing. One such person is Kaven Chang who is a volunteer at Cherishlife Home, a shelter for stray/abandoned dogs. She always had a soft spot for dogs and when a friend invited her to join the shelter as a volunteer, she obliged. “I love being with dogs and I just want to do some good for them. I have a dog at my hometown and one here at my rented home. Whether they are strays, abused, abandoned, pedigree or non-pedigree, my passion is to help them.” said Kaven during an interview. Kaven described the most enjoyable aspect of volunteering in a dog shelter simply as being in the company of the dogs. She finds it relaxing and seeing the dogs showering her with the same love she gives them is rewarding.

“Young people tend to stay in their comfort zone. Although they learn about moral in high school, many are simply unaware of those who are less fortunate. I think some people do not fully understand the meaning of ‘kindness’. Volunteering in any organization requires dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment.”

Cherishlife Home is a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats. They currently house about 200 dogs and 20 cats. It’s not easy to run such a shelter as the maintenance and medical costs could get very high. Yet, there are still people doing it despite the challenges. If you like dogs, give Cherishlife Home a visit. Or better yet, volunteer if you’re a dog/cat lover!

Show The Environment And Wildlife Some Love! Do you know what else on this planet needs love? The environment of course! Each day we breathe in oxygen provided by trees, draw nutrition from food which also comes from the earth, which is supposed to be protected from the sun’s harmful rays by a layer of ozone. And what have we, as the inhabitants of this world, done to appreciate this? We bellow out toxic carbon monoxide, we tear the land for profit, and dump our rubbish at places that other living things call home.

Our next interviewee, Geraldine O. Chang is a volunteer at WWF-Malaysia. She was offered an on-site turtle conservation volunteer opportunity in mid-2013. “Coming from a long-standing nature conservation history worldwide, I believe that the conservation work WWF-Malaysia does could preserve and protect our nation’s greatest assets, our natural ecosystems. It was an opportunity for me to realise my full potential in wildlife conservation,” Geraldine said. Mainly, Geraldine seeks to observe turtle behaviour in the wild and put a stop to turtle egg poaching and consumption. She is also looking forward to learning more about turtle behaviour adaptation in the midst of rapid urbanisation from the field biologists at the project site as well.

All that hard work is for nothing other than passion and love for nature. When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering with WWFMalaysia, Geraldine answered, “Knowing that the time spent working on the present, might give the future a better chance.” Volunteers are really the altruists of the world. They put in time, energy, resources, and much more into helping the needy, the abandoned, or the abused be they humans, animals, or the environment in general. Nothing says ‘love’ more than doing something for nothing. Do your part by volunteering and make the world a better place not only for others, but also for yourself.

As a WWF-Malaysia turtle conservation volunteer, Geraldine tells Campus Plus what she has done and what is required in the field: Good stamina is required when on turtle patrol and sharp sights and hearing is essential in spotting female turtles coming to shore at night to lay eggs. Licenced egg collectors then gather the eggs which are then passed to WWF volunteers to be sent to a hatchery. All this is done with minimal lighting so as to not scare away the turtles!

Mashable reached out to a few millennials, in particular, to find out why they left Facebook - and why some returned. While the reasons for cutting the cord ranged from the practical to the existential, many former Facebook users cited the stress of maintaining their online appearances. While half the users they questioned have returned to the site (albeit with a reduced presence), the other half consistently claim they’re happy to be “free” of Facebook. They found that once they got used to it, life without social media wasn’t as hard as they imagined.

The most common reason for going Facebook cold turkey was the overwhelming nature of the site. To many users, it just seems like noise. Among the mess of targeted ads, Instagram pictures and shared articles, there’s very little room for real socialising between friends on the Facebook Timeline. Duquesne University graduate student Jordan Moore, 24, agrees. He’s quit Facebook in the past but kept his account to stay in touch with a few close friends. ”A lot of the people I am connected with, I no longer talk to,” he said, calling Facebook a “soapbox” and “diary” for people to promote their opinions and frustrations, rather than to actually communicate. Abandoning Facebook, cuts out the obligation to keep track of your friends from grade school and instead focus on real-life interactions with those you care most about.

It’s hard to get over an ex when you see her constant status updates or his weekend party pictures. Some members of the “Broken Hearts Club” find it’s easier to avoid the social network entirely during their recovery periods. Laekyn Sanders, a 21 year-old undergraduate student at Seton Hill University, said she quit Facebook to avoid the distraction of her breakup. “I was going through a really bad breakup and was tired of people asking me via Facebook why things ended with the guy I was dating. It got distracting enough to the point that I would find myself wanting to talk about it to those people and it took me away from focusing on studying, which made my grades drop really quickly,” she added. To Hide Incriminating Evidence From Employers We’ve all heard the warnings: Watch what you put on Facebook, because your future employers will go through your account with a fine-toothed comb to find that one picture of you holding a red Solo cup from 2004. It’s part of the reason Facebook has introduced many privacy tools, but some users, like software engineer Albert Tackie, 26, aren’t taking any chances. ”I left years ago, primarily so I couldn’t have Facebook working against me as I was job hunting. My friends made my Wall far too incriminating and it made me nervous,” he said. “Now I just won’t go back because I’m already free.” This desire to hide evidence from potential employers is causing many Facebookers to fly the coop, especially considering a recent Facebook privacy settings change which ensured no user can hide from search anymore. The fear is legitimate, as employers try harder to gauge potential employees through their social media presence. Some even go as far as to ask for candidates’ Facebook passwords. Removing one’s presence entirely, could mean the difference between getting and losing a job.

He insisted that her refusal to participate on the social media site stemmed from a different problem with Facebook, for instance, its effect on society: “Sometimes it’s tied into an angst-driven statement about the futility of social media. Sometimes it’s a statement idealising hermitage. I think sometimes it’s just a straight up panic of “ IS THIS A DIGITAL REPRESENTATION OF ME?! THIS ISN’T ME. I’M ME. THERE CAN’T BE MORE THAN ONE ME. I MUST DESTROY THIS.” Many of us have at one time admitted we are “addicted” to Facebook. The mindless scrolling, the joy of getting several “likes” on our status and the simplicity that comes with Facebook birthdays. It’s the month of February and with the world’s biggest celebration of love, Valentine’s Day, just around the corner, we thought it’d be apt to throw in an exclusive interview that we did with the cast of the RM4 million production, “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, The Musical”.

THE MOST EXCITING THING FOR THE AUDIENCE IS THAT... IT’S LIVE. THEY CAN SEE THAT WE’RE ALL HUMANS AT THE END OF THE DAY. WE’RE TAUGHT TO BE ABLE TO COVER UP MISTAKES. SO, WE’LL KNOW THAT THERE WAS A MISTAKE, BUT I’M NOT SURE IF THE AUDIENCE WILL. THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN LIVE THEATRE – IT’S THE BEST AND IT FEELS GREAT

he original story, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is a 1937 American animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions, based on the German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. It was also the first full-length animated feature film and the earliest in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. The love story later went on to win an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards in 2008, cinching the title as the greatest American animated film of all time. Fast forward to the present time, after various restorations, re-releases and adaptations, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs took the stage at Sunway Lagoon’s Amphitheatre as Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, The Musical, a cheeky modern day adaptation of the original animated film. We got the chance to speak to the allstar cast (Rachel a.k.a. Snow White, Dawn a.k.a. The Evil Queen, and Stephan a.k.a. Huntsman) of the musical a week before the gala premiere. C+: So you guys have been here for... how long now? What have you guys been doing? DAWN: About a week. We’ve been eating (laughs)! Rehearsing. Rehearsing all day, actually. We also went to the city and did some shopping – Rachel’s and my favourite pastime. Massages! We’re enjoying the amazing things here. STEPHAN: I haven’t had a massage but I’ve had one or two things to eat. It’s quite cheap for us here with the pound exchange rate so it can get dangerous! C+: How long do you guys usually take to get ready before the show? RACHEL: I suppose... well, for my role as Snow White, I wear a wig. It probably takes me about half an hour to get fully made up, put on my wig, and get ready. Then we’ll have a vocal warm-up, a physical warm-up... and so on. D: I’d say about close to an hour for me. Makeup will usually be a big part of my costume, especially the eyes. I bought some fancy eye shadow the other day to experiment with! Big eyes, big lips, and the rest of it is quite easy, but I just need to get into character too because you’re out all day doing your own thing so you need time to start focusing on your role. C+: How many hours do you guys put in a week to rehearse for “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, The Musical”? D: We start at 10am, then we have a lunch break for about an hour around 1pm, and then we finish around 5pm or 6pm. However, it doesn’t stop there. When we get back to our rooms, we have to learn our lines, harmonies for songs, and dance moves. It’s continuous because rehearsal period is two weeks solid and intense so when we get a day off, it’s really just a day for us to relax so we can step away from it all at least for a while. We basically get in on a Saturday and we start rehearsals on a Monday and it has been full power since then!

C+: If you have to be on stage and rehearse all the time, you have to be fit, right? What kind of fitness routines do you guys have? D: Stephan is the Mr Gym here! S: There’s a lovely gym here so I make use of that! The dancers, obviously, they keep fit through the choreography that they have and they do it all the time so that’s what keeps them fit. You try to eat well, and you try to walk around as much as you can or go to the gym or swim... just to try to keep your fitness up. D: It’s important because even if you’re singing, your body is still working out so it’s important to keep healthy. Furthermore, we can’t get sick because we are the show. C+: Is there anything that you guys do before you go on stage, like any personal routines or quirky rituals? S: I don’t really have anything like that. I’m usually chatty but a couple of minutes before going on, I go a bit quiet to just think and remember what’s coming up. I don’t stand on one leg and spin around or anything like that (laughs). But Dawn does do some weird things. D: I do lots of things weird! When we get on stage for rehearsals and do run-throughs on stage, I do the same when I get off the stage. It becomes a routine for me. I can’t change it! I get a little bit too “in character” (laughs). C+: What’s the greatest challenge in performing a live musical? R: For anything that you do that’s live, you’ve got to be prepared for mistakes to happen, at any point. Then you have to go with it and pick up and try not to let the audience realise that anything has gone wrong. D: The most exciting thing for the audience is that... it’s live. They can see that we’re all humans at the end of the day. We’re taught to be able to cover up mistakes so we’ll know that there was a mistake, but I’m not sure if the audience will. However, there’s nothing better than live theatre – it’s the best and it feels great. S: Particularly with a show like this where there’s a lot of audience interaction. It uses the audience all the time to kind of get them to join in the story. That keeps everything exciting because you’ll never know what the audience is going to do because they’re different every night. So, you kind of have to work with that and yes, when things change and when things go wrong, you just adapt and that’s why live theatre is the best kind of performance.

he Malaysian music scene was caught by a storm when hip hop enthusiasts or “Hip-Hop Heads” as the lingo goes, flooded Laundry Bar, The Curve last weekend for the much anticipated inaugural MY Hip-Hop Awards. First of its kind, the awards was organised by The MoveMint, a name that is synonymous to the hip-hop scene in Malaysia. Spearheaded by Jason Schadt or better known as Vandal, The MoveMint is a local record label and events company known to organise community driven hip-hop events such as TYGS (Think You Got Skillz) The Beat Meet and Cypher Sundaze and is also the name behind the first Malaysian based online hip-hop radio – The Crib Show on www.aforadio.com. Aimed to give hip-hop due recognition and acknowledgement, this year’s Awards encompassed 13 categories and 75 nominees and was judged by 13 known names from around the globe with the likes of Masia One, DJ Wristpect, Sheikh Haikel, Moonshyne Brown, BBoy Peanut, Matthew Mistery and Vandal himself among others. Categories of the awards includes the six elements of hip-hop; DJ, Producer, Beatboxer, BBoy, Graffiti and of course, Emcee. “Sometimes you just got to do it! We’ve been thinking about doing these awards, to recognise the Malaysia hip-hop community, for two years Now. Ever since we committed early September, we dove head first and did it our best to ensure that the 1st Malaysian Hip-Hop Awards happened and was a success. Although the event is independent, we managed to pull off an awesome show. What made it more rewarding was the fact that everyone in the scene was happy and had fun!” shared Vandal on the objective of the event. “Having spent my high school days in a small town about 3 hours from the capital, the Kuala Lumpur hip-hop community was something I have always wanted to be a

part of. 10 years down the road, I’m here and have watched the scene grow in so many ways; the effort taken by MYHHA to recognise Malaysian hip-hop and its talents is something we should appreciate and be proud of. MYHHA was definitely one of the highlights of my year and winning the Best Solo Artiste of the Year award only motivated me to work harder in making more music for Malaysian hip-hop. basic home skills is hard if you don’t possess the needed tools or knowledge. For most of us who are new to sewing, the task can seem complicated. Believe it or not, with our step-by -step guide, we’ll make it possible for you to learn how to sew almost anything or mend an outfit, repair household items, and even make a garment from scratch (if you want!). Imagine how much money you’ll be able to save by being able to do some basic sewing! First, you will need some essential tools for your sewing kit. These tools can be found at your nearest haberdashery and are generally inexpensive:

A package of sewing needles in various sizes, (eye sizes and lengths) Keep in mind that you can’t use one needle for everything i.e. a standard stitching needle cannot be used to sew buttons on.

A good pair of scissors You may need to invest a little bit more in a proper pair of scissors because cheap or dull scissors can pull the threads of your fabric or leave jagged edges on your thread when you cut it.

Spools of basic colours of thread This is a bit of a no-brainer and a rule of thumb – it’s a simple matching thread to cloth so you need various colours for your clothes.

Straight pins It’s always good to ensure that the cloth is pinned down flat before you attempt to sew to avoid misalignment.

that you’ve got all the tools, plan your project. The more complex your project is, the more thought you need to put into it. If you’re not sure about something, use pins to “test” it to eliminate the possibilities of making a mistake.

we cannot stress enough that there’s a “right needle” for every sewing job. For example, a pair of jeans will need a thicker needle than a silk blouse and fixing a hem by hand will require a longer needle. Just remember the simple rule of different size needles for different types of fabrics and jobs.

also good to keep in mind that there’s no “universal stitching” method e.g. clothing needs smaller stitches than a curtain would, some clothing that are subject to more stressful wear will need smaller stitches than other types of clothing. The six basic stitches are: backstitch, blanket stitch, running stitch, slip stitch, whipstitch and overcast stitch.

Having seen this talented bunch perform at some gigs, we were super impressed and extremely intrigued to get to know them a little better. Armed with answers and a great sense of humour, the band opened up to us about its musical influences, favourite “must perform” songs and surprising day jobs!

AMPUS+: For those of us who are not in the know, what are your day jobs? halfpast6: We all have very diverse backgrounds – Pei Xzan is in film distribution, Sheryl is in education, Sue Lynn is in building management, Jason is in oil and gas, Shi En is in banking, and JC is in advertising. C+: We’re a little intrigued by your band name, halfpast6. Care to tell us about how you came up with the name? HP6: We believe in managing expectations. Haha! Well, “half past six” is a common colloquial slang that means almost there but not quite. Since we in unison feel that we’re all almost there, but not quite (music is a hobby which we do in our free time and we are not professional musicians or singers), we thought this name aptly describes us. C+: How did you guys meet and who does what in halfpast6? HP6: We came together two years ago to perform at an open mic session. It was supposed to be a one-off thing, but because we had so much fun together, we decided to go ahead as a band and recruited two more half past sixers! There is a core role for everyone, Jason and Shi En are guitarists, Sheryl does a bit of percussion, keys and also sings while Pei Xzan, Sue Lynn and

JC helm the lead vocals. However, as and when the need arises for certain songs, everyone tailor their roles accordingly. C+: Growing up, who were some of the artistes that you’d listen to, mimic or aspire to be? Also, how has that changed now that you’re all adults? HP6: This is a pretty difficult question as all of us have different musical inspirations growing up that spans from pop (Backstreet Boys, Leslie Cheung, Running Man), jazz (the Coltrane kind), gospel (the Hallelujah kind) and rock (The “Wu Bei” kind). That’s the cool (and sometimes crazy) thing about halfpast6. Now we try to actually amalgamate all of these influences into our repertoire. We believe this can be done but then again, we are called halfpast6. C+: How do you decide on what songs to cover for your live performances and how long or how often do you guys practise before shows? HP6: It’s a mixture of songs that we like, songs that we want to sing, and songs that suit the occasion. Prior to every show, we take at least two months to practise and master the song list. At least – (again, we believe in managing expectations).

C+: Name some of the “staple songs” that halfpast6 would perform at every gig. HP6: At this point we try to do different songs at every gig. Keyword is try! Otherwise, we will reuse songs like David Choi’s “By My Side” and Adele’s “Rolling in The Deep”. If you give us Negaraku or even a Korean song, like we said, we’re still game for it. C+: So, for the students who want to someday start up a band like yours, what advice do you think would come in most handy for them? HP6: Well, first – delude self-esteem. Then, find people with similar passion, interest and same level of delusion and all of you can just start banging away already on a few things. What we always aim to do is to have fun – not just during performances but in every single practice session as well. C+: What’s currently in the pipeline for halfpast6? Are there any surprises for 2014 or performances that we can look forward to? HP6: Life itself is a walking surprise so we would say more food, more music and more love!

MIDNIGHT MEMORIES ONE DIRECTION

They say that manufactured acts never have a chance of lasting more than one or two album releases. Funny that they should assume so because One Direction has time and time again

Who would’ve thought that the boy with bleach blond hair, tattoos and earrings could rap his way to rapsuperstardom? Such is the story of Eminem, who first shook the world

proven the world wrong. And they will continue to do so with the release of their new album, Midnight Memories. There’s nothing less than uplifting about the songs on this album, starting with Story Of My Life. Of course, you can expect it to sound like your average boy band tune, but wait, there’s also the anthemic Diana! Followed by the dubstep-influenced Little White Lies. We say, if it’s uptempo, it’s hard to hate on. Midnight Memories is then taken down a few notches with songs like Right Now and Happily. We especially love Right Now because Ryan Tedder had a hand in its production and Happily for its irresistible guitarplucking. The deluxe version of One Direction’s Midnight Memories comes packed with 18 songs and truly something for everyone. So hey, even if you’re not a screaming fangirl, there’s nothing wrong with picking up a copy of the album for some ‘feel good’-ness!

with his debut. Fast forward to 17 years later, his latest album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (MMLP2) would serve as an almanac of all his musical accomplishments. Not without any struggles however, Recovery, for example, talks about the artiste’s struggles with depression and drug addiction, while Headlights focuses on Eminem’s turbulent relationship with his mother. He continues to dig deep with Stronger Than I Was, where, believe it or not, Eminem sings over an emotional and slow instrumental. Finally, he proves once again to be the master of his trade in Rap God, a song that’s dripping with so much honesty that fans would literally feel his many emotions. Despite Eminem saying that he ain’t as big as he was, we’re not complaining. Not even if it took him another 17 years to release another gobstopping LP like this one!

From X Factor to the recording studio, Olly Murs has the world of pop wrapped around his finger. We say this with confidence because there’s nothing about his music that’s not infectious

Manly pop is what we like to call it because badass British boy band The Wanted has seemingly decided to keep its new album, Word of Mouth

and his third album, Right Place Right Time is evidence of that. It opens with the track of the same name that sounds like it could’ve easily been a Maroon 5 song. Followed by Army Of Two, a song that stays true to its title with familiar military-style drums in its production. The biggest surprise, however, was Flo Rida’s brief guest appearance on Troublemaker! Clearly, Olly’s younger fans weren’t forgotten as Head To Toe and What A Buzz are two absolutely summery pop songs that people will find themselves dancing to. Finally, and as with every album, there’s always a ‘star of the show’ and we picked heartfelt Dear Darlin’. A wrap to a genuinely likeable album? Why yes, of course!

- decent. You may have already heard Walks Like Rihanna months prior to the album release – an excellent single to whet your appetite for what’s about to come. Considering how successful the single was, coupled with the spoof-filled music video, we won’t be surprised if you already know the words to Walks Like Rihanna by heart. If you loved the band’s previous catchy songs (Glad U Came, Chasing The Sun), you’re going to love Summer Alive. The boys’ “dance pop” vibe continues to live on through Glow In The Dark, which introduces some elements of electronic dance music (EDM) which has, in recent years, hit critical mass. Sure, they’re keeping Word of Mouth safe for the kids, but we all need some bubble-gum pop in our lives every once in a while and The Wanted has got that down pat without compromising its macho-ness.

Imagine our surprise when Queen Bey decided to catch the world off-guard and randomly drop an album on 12th December! Just a few minutes before midnight, Beyoncé unexpectedly released her fifth and self-titled studio album digitally. No teasers prior to the release, no news on her working on the said “surprise” album, nothing. If that wasn’t non-conventional enough, the album, made available on the iTunes Store, comes packed with 14 songs and a whopping total of 17 videos. It also has guest appearances from none other than her loving artiste-producer husband Jay Z, Drake and Frank Ocean, while the closing track, “Blur”, featured her daughter Blue Ivy. Justin Timberlake co-wrote the songs “Rocket” and “Partition”, and Pharrell, Timbaland, Ryan Tedder, Miguel and Sia also co-wrote some tracks. Immediately, Beyoncé’s efforts paid off as the album began soaring up the charts. On the day after the release, the album topped the iTunes chart in 100 countries and it’s soaring towards a #1 debut atop Billboard 200 in the US. How did it do with the fans? It sold more than 80,000 copies in the first three hours after its release and the current sales figures is nailing its position as the highest-selling album in its first week by a female artiste since “Red” by Taylor Swift. Needless to say, the album also caused a stir across all social media websites, with Beyoncé’s friends and fans alike posting about the release. According to microblogging site Twitter, it generated over 1.2 million tweets in 12 hours, with a tweets-per-minute spike of 5,300. Friends of the superstar such as Katy Perry also took to Twitter to comment that Beyoncé had broken the Internet and that nobody should talk to her unless if it’s about Beyoncé whereas Lady Gaga, on the other hand, tweeted, “Welcome back Honey B, we missed you”. What does Beyoncé have to say about her way of releasing the album? “I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artiste

Since the release of ‘Bubble Pop!’ in 2011, HyunA has constantly been the talk of South Korean entertainment media, if not the talk of the town. Why? Well, first and foremost, the 21-year-old idol kicked off her career in 2007 as a member of ‘Wonder Girls’ but left after a few months due to health concerns. Since then, she has been affiliated with both K-Pop idol girl groups 4Minute and co-ed subunit Trouble Maker (with Hyunseung of B2ST). When she decided to release solo works of her own, her popularity shot through the roof – mostly because of her overly sexy dance moves and ‘come-hither’ expressions. So much so that most of her solo music videos have been rated 19+. She has since been dubbed ‘controversial’.

According to CNN Travel, K-Pop idol boy group BIGBANG’s leader is one of the top 50 reasons to visit Seoul. And that’s not to say it’s because anyone has a high chance of bumping into the idol on the streets of Myeongdong or Hongdae. It’s because since debuting in 2006, the versatile idol has gone from well-choreographed dancing, to rapping, to composing and writing music for the group as well as releasing his own solo works. He’s also producing for younger YG Entertainment artistes and earning his title as South Korea’s fashion icon (and therefore, ‘fashionista’), and also modelling for and endorsing multiple lifestyle brands. He’s even down to designing accessories (AMBUSH). Our question: Is there anything that G-Dragon can’t do? No, seriously.

South Korean idol boy group member, Yong Junhyung of B2ST, certainly has a lot going for him. Just months after B2ST released its second studio album, Hard To Love, How To Love, he got busy on his solo debut, the mini album Flower. And by working, we mean working really hard because Flower is filled with Junhyung’s own composition and lyrics. Flower opens with the title track of the same name that, despite the sweet title, suggests that the song is about Junhyung going through a painful breakup. We also loved Anything, which features Junhyung’s label mate G.NA. The addition of her vocals to Anything makes for the perfect musical combination when coupled with Junhyung’s skills. Let’s not disregard the piano version of Caffeine, where B2ST member Yoseob lends his voice. If you liked the original Caffeine, you’re going to love this switched-up version, and beg for more! We don’t see why diehard B2ST fans wouldn’t be picketing for Junhyung to produce more solo work from this point onwards.

When YG Entertainment, home to idol girl group 2NE1’s Park Bom and Lee Hi confirmed that they’d be announcing a new unit just before the year ends, the world of K-Pop was buzzing! After a series of teasers (in true YG-style, the teasers didn’t immediately suggest who were the members of the new unit) and a big “BH” hint, it was later revealed that the new unit will in fact, consist of ‘B’ for (Park) ‘Bom’ and ‘H for (Lee) ‘Hi’. The girls’ debut single, All I Want For Christmas Is You is not a new song yet trust the producers to have jazzed it up especially for Park Bom and Lee Hi. Originally a Mariah Carey Christmas hit, their own version of All I Want For Christmas Is You has a different and more emotional approach. The entire song, too, has been rearranged. Perhaps it was done this way to better suit the lovely vocals of the two female idols? One thing’s for sure, Mariah doesn’t know it yet but she has some fierce South Korean competition!

Ailee is every aspiring South Korean idol wannabe’s dream come true. Born in the US, she first started pursuing her passion in music by creating a YouTube channel called “mzamyx3” and later “aileemusic”. With the blink of an eye, Ailee had all eyes on her singing on the web. She later landed a spot as YMC Entertainment’s trainee and debuted as South Korea’s Beyoncé. Because she had a squeaky clean reputation, Ailee was also the darling of Seoul with a golden voice - until she got involved in a nasty nude photo scandal. Luckily, the idol got out of it in no time, relatively unscathed, thanks to the unwavering love and support from her doting fans. Phew!

SM Entertainment has a knack for debuting groups with an insane number of members (read: SNSD Girls’ Generation, Super Junior). So, when they first introduced 12-member K-Pop idol boy group, EXO, we were anxious to see how this group would succeed in setting themselves apart from others – especially their SM Entertainment seniors. Boy, (or rather, boys), did they wing that! With a few non-Korean members plus a few born-andbred Korean members and special traits per member (vocals, dance, looks, charisma), EXO has taken not only South Korea by storm but also the world. The best part is that so far, the group has only released one full studio album. Mind blown yet?

What?! You are not over EXO’s debut album and the success of Wolf or Growl yet? Then we say it’s time to catch up because the 12-member South Korean boy band recently released an EP titled, Miracles in December. Clearly we’re not over it yet because the band sang into the hearts of girls again, with a selection of “feel good” songs. It opens with the title track of the same name, somewhat slow and sad, coupled with powerful vocals, before picking up the pace with slightly more fun and energetic tunes. Christmas Day, for example, is not the average Christmas song you’d expect from an idol boy group, as it sounds, well, sexy! Things are then taken down a notch with the melancholic yet pleasant My Turn To Cry – emotions in their purest forms. Sure, Miracles In December turned out to be the least Christmassy album we’ve ever picked up. It’s EXO, and hey, if it’s solid, who’s complaining?

Joining the league of Christmas-themed release is none other than T-ARA’s T-ara Winter. We haven’t really heard their music previously so imagine our excitement when we heard that they were releasing a season-styled one. T-ara Winter opens with Hide and Seek, which sounds as Christmassy as you’d expect. Followed by the dance-y Do You Know Me – a staple that without which, wouldn’t make them T-ara. One thing to note though, is that just like Hide and Seek, there are two versions to Do You Know Me. T-ara has made it a point to display the true extent of their beautiful vocals via these slower and perhaps more “wintry” versions. The girls then pick up the beat with tracks like No.9 (both original and club version) and Because I Know. Leaving no room for anyone to be disappointed and no time to waste as your feet urge to get up and dance. We suspect that was their intention anyway so go on and dance like nobody’s watching while putting this one on repeat!

STATS ON ORGAN DONATION IN MALAYSIA Last year, Malaysian Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said that up to 31st August 2013, the recorded number of those who pledged their organs was still low as only 233,572 people had done so. To put that into perspective, that’s only about 0.81% of the country’s population. The numbers are worrying as supply is unable to fulfil demand – the number of Malaysian patients (most of them diagnosed with kidney problems) still waiting for an organ transplant stood at 16,945 as at 31st August 2013. According to the NTRC, as of 31st March this year, more than 10,000 patients are on the national waiting list for kidney, heart, liver and lung transplants. Despite this, only 1,394 transplantations have been recorded.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT ORGAN DONATION Contrary to popular belief, being an organ donor doesn’t mean that your body will

ADVANTAGES OF A LIVING DONOR TRANSPLANT A patient with kidney failure usually waits for several years to receive kidneys from a deceased donor. However, such a transplant can be done within weeks with a suitable living donor. On top of that, living donor transplant surgery can be electively scheduled to suit the donor and the recipient. This allows the transplant surgery to be done when both donor and recipient are ready and in the best of health. After all, organs from living donors work better. Most of the time, the kidney

The Health Ministry of Malaysia has also obtained approval from the secretarygeneral of the Treasury, Finance Ministry, for exemption from any treatment charges at the government hospitals for deceased organ donors. This means the organ donors’ family members don’t pay for the hospital charges after the donation has been done. METHOD 1. For the chilli butter, mash the parsley into the butter with the chilli, a squeeze of lemon juice, the zest and seasoning. Chill until firm. 2. Heat oven to 200C/180C. Toss all the ingredients for the chips on a baking tray, then season. Roast for 35-45 minutes until golden and crisp. 3. Heat a good amount of oil in a frying pan. Add the extra butter and the seasoned steaks, fry for 2-4 minutes on each side, then transfer to plates. Toss the leaves with olive oil and lemon juice. INGREDIENTS Some sweets to decorate (e.g. jelly hearts, M&Ms or perhaps something your valentine loves to make it special). For the sponge cake 250g butter, plus extra for greasing 200g dark chocolate, broken into chunks 500g plain flour 500g golden caster sugar 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Â˝ teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 200g natural yogurt 400g cooked beetroot in natural juices (not vinegar) 4 tablespoons red food colouring For the frosting 200g full-fat soft cheese, at room temperature 250g butter, softened, 400g icing sugar, sifted 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

METHOD 1. Heat oven to 180/160c. Make the first batch of sponges by greasing and lining 2 x 20cm round tins. Gently melt half the butter and chocolate together in a saucepan. Mix half the flour, sugar, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda, and Âź teaspoon salt in a large mixing bowl. Whizz one egg and half the yogurt and beetroot in food processor or blend until fairly smooth. Boil some water in a kettle. 2. Tip the beetroot mix into the dry ingredients along with the melted chocolate mixture and 150ml boiling water, then stir to combine. Stir in half the food colouring, if using, and divide the mixture between the tins. Bake for 25 minutes until a skewer poked into the centre comes out clean. Leave the cakes on a wire to cool completely. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make 2 more sponges or if you have 4 x 20cm sandwich tins, you can bake in a big batch all at once. 4. To make the frosting, briefly beat together the soft cheese and butter then beat in the icing sugar and vanilla. Use a little to sandwich the cooled cakes together, then swirl the rest all over the sandwiched cakes and decorate with sweets, if you like. Sit the cake somewhere cool (not the fridge) to set a little before serving.

In her new novel, Lone Wolf, Picoult shows off her skill less as a fiction writer and more of a researcher. She’s able to make obscure medical conditions, legal issues, or, in this case, scientific research about wolves, utterly absorbing and accessible to the lay reader. In Lone Wolf, the stars are four-legged and howling. By comparison, Picoult’s bipeds seem almost dull, save for biologist Luke Warren, a man who truly runs with the wolves. Set in New Hampshire, Lone Wolf focuses on Warren’s family members. The human ones include his adoring 17-year-old daughter, Cara; his estranged son Edward, who left home six years earlier at 18

after a fight with his father; and his ex-wife, Georgie, now married to a defence attorney who becomes pivotal to the plot. The story opens with a crash. Literally. Luke and Cara are in a car accident. It leaves Luke in a coma and Cara injured in body and soul. Georgie summons Edward from Thailand, where he teaches English. After hearing the doctors state that his father will not recover, Edward wants to pull the plug. To stop him, his enraged sister contacts a conservative government attorney. Charges are brought, lies are told, and secrets are revealed chez courtroom. Though as a readable, this legal domestic drama is predictable Picoult terrain. What saves Lone Wolf is Picoult’s depiction of Luke’s other families, the different packs of wolves he has known and loved and the two years he lived with a wild wolf pack in Canada. (The section on how they come to accept him is riveting.) Tall, blond and magnetic, Luke becomes a YouTube sensation upon his return when he creates his own captive wolf pack and is filmed eating calf and deer carcasses with them. Narrating this strange solitary man’s story in flashbacks, Picoult captures Luke’s destructive but magnificent obsession with these shy predators, weaving in details about how these mysterious creatures live, hunt, love and die. There are many aspirants to her throne, but nobody in commercial fiction cranks the pages more effectively than Jodi Picoult.

INSTINCTS ARE NOT ENOUGH WHEN FACING A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. CAREFUL PLANNING GOES A LONG WAY, AND THAT WILL DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT YOU’LL LIVE TO SEE ANOTHER DAY.

urviving a zombie apocalypse takes a lot more work than you think. You can’t just sprint around with guns blazing without ammo and with stamina running out. Let’s not forget too, the fact that you’re a human with fragile bones, vulnerable immune systems and delicious flesh. Such is the logic of State Of Decay, Undead Labs’ indie zombie survival game. Let’s get one fact straight. In SoD you are no superhuman zombie slayer who’s armed to the teeth with a limitless supply of ammo and weapons and a recharging health meter. You play with multiple survivors who you meet throughout the game. Being normal humans, the characters can fall sick, get tired, break bones, starve and worst of all, be eaten alive by zombies. After the first 30 minutes of the game, you will realise how important it is to acquire a sanctuary. This could be a church, a restaurant, a supermarket, an office building, a mansion or even warehouses depending on how many survivors you plan to take in. These home bases will be your safe zone where beds will provide everyone a good rest, a watch tower can be built to keep zombie hordes at bay, a medical tent to make sure all your friends do not die and more essential set ups to help your little band of merry survivors live as long as possible. Just because you have a home base does not mean it will magically generate medicine, ammo, food or repair your vehicles. You need to come out from the safety of your fortified nest to scavenge for supplies or you will soon find your friends dying from starvation, sickness, and possibly

boredom (The bored one might even be you. You don’t plan to play the game just by staying in the base do you?). So raid all the restaurants, gun shops, pharmacies, homes and gas stations to find all the precious supplies you need. Before you do that though, make sure you’re carrying a gun, a baseball bat or a melee weapon of some sort, some painkillers and a lot of ammo. Who knows what you’ll encounter out there in the zombie wasteland. Actually, we know what you’ll encounter. Namely, the normal shuffling zombies, the runner zombies who are a tad faster than their slower cousins, the Screamer which is basically Miley Cyrus but less gross, the Feral zombie, and the SWAT zombie just to name a few. The ‘special’ zombies of course pose a bit more of a challenge. Throughout the game you’ll be contacted by nearby survivors who will offer you missions/ quests. Complete those missions and you’ll be rewarded with XP and ‘influence’ which is basically the in-game currency. Influence is used to take guns from supply lockers, whether it’s the one at your home base, or at the home bases of other survivors. It’s also used to perform radio commands and call for backup or a scavenger from your home base to help you out with clearing out an infested house or carrying home bundles of supplies. So, State Of Decay is not your typical run-n-gun zombie survival game. It takes a little less macho and a whole lot more tactics, planning and patience to make it in this post-apocalyptic zombie infested world. That’s where the fun is.

Asus MeMo Pad

After spending some time with Asus’ MeMo Pad HD 7, we find it very reminiscent of the Nexus 7 overall.

e feel that some people will be less keen on the MeMo Pad’s glossy plastic body, despite the fact it feels pretty sturdy. The table also packs dual stereo speakers that sit at the bottom and face downwards. It’s pretty loud and could probably interrupt conversations in a busy coffeeshop. The MeMo Pad comes powered by a 1.2GHz MT8125 quad-core CPU with 1GB of RAM and runs on Android 4.2. It comes with either 8GB or 16GB storage but you also have the option of adding up to 32GB of additional storage. Asus promises you’ll get 10 hours from its 15Wh battery, though we weren’t able to put this to the test with the time we had. The 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display is capable of 720p HD playback. Perhaps our only complaint is the incredibly glossy display, which meant visible fingerprints and strong lights shining right back at us during our play. Its 5-megapixel rear camera certainly isn’t bad for such a budget tablet – the pictures we took came out crisp enough at least on the device’s screen – while there’s a 1.2MP HD lens on the front. However, the lack of a flash is likely to frustrate those who like to get snap-happy with their tablets. Asus’ MeMo Pad HD 7 takes a fairly decent swipe at the Nexus 7 – and yes, the iPad Mini – and considering it’s offering comparable specs at a lower price, it has a good chance of getting a KO when it touches down (that’s our way of saying dropping the tablet).

Game Pad 2 These days, Android games are popping up as fast as cheap, third-party Android tablets.

t’s a hit-and-miss marketplace, with many games disappearing deep into the ether after launch and most seeing fewer than 100 downloads. However, because of the rapid increase and ease of development, Android games are gradually improving in quality. The same can be said for tablets and gaming tablets. The Archos Game Pad 2 and the arrival of other gaming-specific tablets, are the results of refining the Android gaming experience. Archos has improved on its initial attempt with the Game Pad by redesigning the console to look more like a dedicated gaming device, while making sure it also offers most of the standard tablet features. The Game Pad 2 now has a sleek, black, matted exterior that the previous version missed and doesn’t just look like as if a d-pad and buttons have been stuck to either side of a tablet. It also comes with an improved 1280 x 800 screen, 2GB of RAM, a quadcore A9 1.6GHz processor and a quad-core GPU Mali 400 MP4. Its US$199.99 price tag doesn’t justify the Game Pad 2’s issues with lag and multitasking though. Issues that plagued the previous Game Pad still exist and there simply aren’t enough blockbuster games in the Play Store to justify a launch price that’s higher than the PS Vita. If you judge it purely on its ability as a tablet, it fares pretty well. At its core, the Game Pad 2 is a gaming tablet with Android tablet functionality.

The LG G2 flagship smartphone from LG hasn’t even made its way to Malaysia yet, but it looks like the rumours have already started. The latest report for the next flagship smartphone from LG, presumably called the LG G3, is in the specifications department. First up, remember when LG showed off a 5.5” smartphone IPS LCD panel with 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD) in August? According to ZDNet Korea, the G3 should feature the QHD screen but the size hasn’t been confirmed yet. Other specs include a 16MP rear camera and an octa-core processor developed by the S.Korean company itself with the codename LG Odin. The processor will not only be used in the G3, but also in the next generation of LG tablet.

Dual-SIM HTC Desire 601 Is Here Good news for those looking to purchase a mid-range Android device. HTC Malaysia has just announced the arrival of its dual-SIM HTC Desire 601, launched in Taiwan last month. Like the original Desire 601, this dual-sim version comes with a large 4.5” HD display and packs some of the latest HTC feature such as HTC Zoe with Video Highlights and HTC Boom Sound. The dual-SIM desire 601 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of expandable internal storage. It comes with a 5MP rear camera with BSI sensor, F2.0/28mm lens, VGA front camera, 2100mAh battery but sadly though, only 3G connectivity on board (a bummer for those who are on an LTE network). The HTC Desire dual-SIM, in black or white, is available with a retail price of RM1,099.

Lamborghini Ego

If you could turn all your ego, selfishness, and money into a car, we’d wager that car would be the Lamborghini Egoista. It’s the brainchild of VW Group Design Chief Walter De Silva, built specifically for Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary. De Silva says, “It is a car made purely for ego. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme. It is a car without compromises.”

nder the Egoista’s hood lies a much modified version of the 5.2-litre V10 engine from the Gallardo, tweaked to produce 600bhp, sitting underneath a crazy exterior styled using inspiration from an Apache helicopter. The cockpit can be ejected in an emergency. In our opinion, the Lamborghini Egoista looks as if it was inspired by Mach 5, the race car from the Speed Racer cartoon show. De Silva and his team wanted Lamborghini’s famous icon to shine through the design, so the side flanks are there to represent a bull preparing to charge, horns lowered. There’s no aero on top, but flaps in the bodywork flip open or close automatically depending on driving conditions. There are two at the back to increase stability, and a series of intakes on the back of the engine hood to increase cooling for the V10.

There are LED clearance lights at the front in place of traditional headlights, ‘bull’s eyes’ orange side indicators, red rear lights and two more lights on the roof, with two ‘eagle eyes’ hidden in the front intakes; these are used to ‘scan the darkness at great distances’. The body is made up of carbon fibre and aluminium, using aeronautical-spec anti-radar material, and anti-glare glass too. Inside, there’s just a single racing seat with a four-point seatbelt, and a heads-up display and steering wheel that looks like it was made by someone with a fetish for jet fighters. Since much of the car is already inspired by aeronautics, they thought “Hey, let’s ditch the doors and make the cockpit flip open like the ones on jet fighters.”

he Malaysian final was held on 11th January 2014 for the second consecutive year on an ice skating rink at the Sunway Pyramid Ice, where the chills and thrills added up to an unusual experience for the finalists and their supporters, VIPs and media guests as well as 5,000 spectators. A Penang-born digital animation student from One Academy, Pitt Den, the winner of last year’s competition, bagged the champion title again with his creative choreography to take home RM2,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to participate in the grand final in Japan on 1st March 2014. However, he stressed that although he clearly had the moves and managed to win here, it wasn’t easy and it won’t be easy when he goes to Japan. “This year, the competition was very strong. I considered myself lucky last year to have won - I’m even luckier this year because the people who took part in the 6th GATSBY Dance Competition were really good. Since I’ve been to Japan, so I’m not as nervous as I was last year. I dance to express but I have to do more than just express in Japan. I have to impress,” Den confessed. As for words of wisdom he had for aspiring student dancers, he said, “For the b-boys out there, don’t ever hesitate to join competitions like these because you too stand a chance if you really try. Miracles do happen – like what happened to me!” The Grand Final will be broadcasted live on Ustream. The Asia grand final winner gets the rare opportunity to go on a fully paid dance exchange tour in any one of the nine participating countries and experience a different dance culture in Asia.
