his month, we talk about a very serious issue – abuse. While there are many types of abuse, they are all detrimental to a person’s mental and physical health. We were able to speak to a victim of abuse, who suffered from physical and sexual abuse when she was just a young girl. Our friend shared her pain with us to help us spread awareness that you shouldn’t suffer in silence. There are many avenues here in Malaysia for you to seek help; it doesn’t matter if you’re the one being abused or you know of someone who’s being abused, or even if you’re a male or female. Abuse has to stop. Read our cover story on page 40 to find out how you can do your part.

When Art Pays MyKRIS Limited, a Tier-1 Malaysian Internet & Intranet Services Provider organised a short video contest last year, which was held on a national scale. The contest, which ran from September to 15 December 2014, saw the participation of 250 students from 10 universities. After months of effort, students from Saito College were announced as the winners. Themed “Youth Creativity Prevails”, the MyKRIS short video contest was open to all private Malaysian university and college students that study digital animation, multimedia, video editing, graphic design, and film and broadcasting courses. In order to encourage more participants, MyKRIS’ short video contest was even incorporated as a course assignment in some of the colleges involved. According to MyKRIS’ Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Chew Choo Soon, they hope that they can work with partners to create a bigger and more extensive competition in 2015 to improve and nurture
the students to be a new generation of creative film makers. He also added, “No doubt that this kind of competition will act as an encouragement for tertiary students to develop their Multimedia creativity.” Not only did the students manage to apply the Multimedia video production skills
that they obtained in classes, they also were given the opportunity to experience first-hand, how the corporate world works. The winning students from Saito college were awarded with RM8,000 in prizes, while UCSI University and IACT College, who won second and third place, won RM4,000 and RM2,000 respectively.
Yu Cai Foundation Receives RM50 Million Boost
Courtesy of Ananda Krishnan and Usaha Tegas Group, the Yu Cai Foundation (YCF) inaugurated its charitable initiative on 28 January with a seed funding of RM50 million. Additionally, Pan Malaysian Sweeps Sdn Bhd also participated in the circle of generosity by donating its surpluses to YCF. During the launch, YCF Chairman, Chan Chee Beng said “Everyone has potential; they just need to be nurtured and supported”. The YCF was established to help create a world where education grants everyone the access to succeed and achieve their fullest potential in terms of academic and vocational goals. Dedicated to support the multilingual and multicultural facets of our education system, the YCF essentially concentrates on providing grants to educational institutions that practice Mandarin as a medium of instruction. In addition, they also provide scholarships for deserving Malaysians from all races pursuing studies in these Mandarin-based schools. Furthermore, YCF also supports the goals to develop physical facilities and grants in other areas to nurture a pool of talents for the society. During the launch ceremony, Chan also presented cash prizes to the top three winners of the YCF logo competition. Out of 90 entries, Ong Cai Bin from Dasien Academy of Art earned a cash prize of RM10,00 as her logo was deemed to best reflect the philosophy behind Yu Cai’s foundation. ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design student eNg Xiao Fen bags title ‘Encouragement Prize’ at the ESMOD Seoul International T-Shirt Competition
Eng Xiao Fen became the pride of The One Academy’s ESMOD Kuala Lumpur recently, when she received the title of ‘Encouragement Prize’ during the ESMOD Seoul International T-shirt Design Contest. The competition, which was held in conjunction with ESMOD Seoul’s 25th Anniversary, received entries from 574 students from ESMOD schools all over the world, such as Paris, Tokyo and Berlin. The design that she submitted was a print for a straight cut T-shirt with either short or long sleeves. It features the number 25 at the front with words like ‘ESMOD’ and ‘SEOUL’ interwoven into the number. For an added creative touch, she also included the stone grandfather, a stone statue from Korea that’s become an icon among tourists. On her thoughts during the competition, Xiao Fen said she had not expected to be chosen as one of the winners because she wasn’t focused on winning, but rather, only wanted to participate to share her work.
For the first time ever, the INTI International University in Putra Nilai held an International Education Summit to promote dialogue on issues that are plaguing international students. It was also a platform to discuss the development of a network of international student services professionals. Themed ‘Diversity at Campuses: the Way Forward’, the event was graced by Ministry of Education, Deputy Minister, Y.B. Datuk Mary Yap. The event was also co-organised in partnership with University Kebangsaan Malaysia and Taylor’s University, making it a true marriage of tertiary learning forces. The summit was incepted following an influx of international students into Malaysia. It also inspired the creation of a hub that will champion international student education and services at the Putra Nilai campus. In INTI alone, 20% of the student body is made up of international students from over 60 countries. The hub is called Student Station and is a one-stop centre that provides services to assist international students with their non-academic needs.

Zombies Win Masters of Rev Up The Masters of Rev Up programme is an annual affair that’s organised by Revive Isotonic. This programme requires all entries to reflect the brand’s value of performing everyday activities in an extraordinary way. The 2014 edition of this programme required participants to organise a marathon, or any exercise that emphasised continuous action over a period of time. After months of planning and organising, team SEALS from Universiti Tenaga Nasional was crowned as the winner of this programme for 2014. The team managed to beat 15 other finalists to claim the grand prize, which is a scholarship worth RM10,000. To win, the team successfully organised a marathon that was called ‘Rev Up the Walking Dead’. This project saw the involvement of 700 university students who were dressed as zombies, “survivors” and soldiers. The leader of the SEALS team, Sarrvin Raj Kanagasarpai, said that “We relied on teamwork, strong support from our university and a constant exchange of ideas, but our key aim was participant satisfaction. By focusing on this, we organised an enjoyable event that was not only fun for all, but also taught us just how important it is to think creatively and to always present a positive attitude during any undertaking.”
BAC Enhances Law Degree Programme A new agreement was reached on the 5th of February between Brickfields Asia College (BAC) and the University of Essex as the two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). With the MoU in place, students who enrol in the BAC UK Transfer programme are granted access to a variety of world-class degrees. Officiating the ceremony was University of Essex’s Vice Chancellor, the Honourable Professor Anthony Forster. There, he said that the MoU was a momentous occasion that marked the beginning of a great and exciting partnership between the two leading academic institutions. The University of Essex is ranked number 22 in the world for universities under 50 years old, which makes it a great addition as a UK Partner for BAC. Thanks to this signing, BAC is likely to be the “Fastest and Smartest Way to Over 70 UK Law and Business Degrees”.

Taylor’s University Collaborates with
Leading Pharma Players In order to meet the rapidly growing demand for healthcare talents, Taylor’s University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with six pharmaceutical players to launch the Pharmaceutical Industry Student Adoption (PISA) programme. The first collaboration of its kind in the country, this programme aims to foster students in a holistic manner and further support them to get crucial practical experience in the industry, said Taylor’s University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Pradeep Nair. In addition, he also said that this partnership complements the nation’s goals to take Malaysia’s healthcare industry to greater heights. To be as effective as possible, the MoU was signed by Taylor’s University and several of the leading pharmaceutical players here in Malaysia, including Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn Bhd; Blackmores Malaysia; Johnson & Johnson Sdn Bhd; Novartis Corporation; Pfizer Malaysia; and Roche (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Apart from providing internship opportunities for Taylor’s University students, original and applied research as well as other projects related to pharmaceutical sciences will also be pursued and developed together. Nair also added, “More and more employers are
increasingly recognising that students also need life skills and work skills that will make them competitive in the marketplace, and ease their transition from a
book-smart student to a professional.” With the PISA programme, Taylor’s is attempting to be the most effective platform to provide the training needed.
APU Students Connect with
Top Employers in ‘Speed Meeting’
The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently turned the concept of Speed Dating on its head and reinvented it as Speed Meeting. During these sessions, over 200 Computing and Information Technology (IT) students took part in the event which was billed as ‘InternsConnect’, and got the chance to meet top employers for whom they could possibly intern. Jointly organised by APU Careers Centre, iM4U and JobStreet Malaysia, the students were given five minutes to interact with the employers. It was a challenging yet unique experience for them as they had to pitch their talents and abilities to the companies, while the employers were given only two minutes to ask questions. Candidates who excelled would be called for an interview after the event. Companies that participated in the event include names like Zalora, Domino’s, and Hitachi Data Systems. 14

UTAR Students Mix Altruism with PR
KDU Ushers in 2015 with New Campus What costs RM260 million and spans a space of one million square feet? As of right now, it’s the new KDU University College flagship campus at the Paramount Utropolis development in Glenmarie. Similar to its size, the new campus symbolises a massive step forward for Paramount Education, formerly known as the KDU Education Group. Built to offer innovative teaching and learning experiences, the new campus plans to achieve its purpose through nine well-equipped lecture halls and classrooms, a contemporary library and a series of labs for practical, hands-on learning. Of course, all of this wouldn’t be fully utilised without a panel made up of lecturers and advisory councils with industrial experience, which is something KDU University College has in abundance. Students are also welcome to build a life for themselves here with a 580-bed student village which has direct access to campus facilities such as specialised culinary kitchens, Alienware teaching labs and a state-of-the-art sound recording studio. Furthermore, as the campus is built within the Utropolis township, students will also gain access to the 120,000 square feet Utropolis Marketplace retail centre.
Public Relations students from the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Perak campus ushered in Chinese New Year early with the Soft Launch of their PR Campaign 2014/2015: Volunteerism IV, named Togetherness. As the campaign’s main director Chia Yi Jing explained, the objective of the campaign was to improve the lives of the residents of Kampar and make Kampar a better place, thus the title Volunteerism. To achieve this objective, the students would focus on carrying out charitable efforts in five areas, namely: Road Safety, Food Tourism, Vandalism, Environment and Charity. The endeavours will span a range of interesting activities, from musical dramas to food exhibitions. Also present at the Soft Launch were the campaign’s five amiable mascots, who are Ant-Traffie (Road Safety), Ant-Cheffie (Food Tourism), Ant-Fixie (Vandalism), Ant-Greenie (Environment) and Ant-Lovie (Charity). Ants were chosen as the mascots because they represent diligence and unity, and when observed in their natural habitat, showcase the value of togetherness.

Awesome Threesome Earlier this year, ASUS Malaysia held a special media preview session, where they showed us a number of their latest products. These products include the ASUS EeeBook X205, the Fonepad 7 (FE171CG), and the ZenFone C. Unfortunately, no news about ASUS’ ZenFone 2 arrival was given. However, the three products that were showed to use were no less impressive. The EeeBook X205 is a 11.6-inch notebook that weighs less than 1kg and has a battery life that powers the X205 for up to 12 hours on a full chage. It runs on Windows 8.1 and is powered by an Intel Atom quad-core Z3735 processor. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365. As for the Fonepad 7 (FE171CG), it’s a phablet that will go on sale beside the older Fonepad 7 (FE170CG). Standout features include an 8MP rear camera that boasts ASUS’ PixelMaster Low Light mode and 3G dual-SIM capabilities. Last but not least, the ZenFone C is a 4.5-inch, entry-level smartphone. From then on, the Philips Shaver Series 9000 was born. It is packed with intuitive features including the Contour detect technology and V-Track Precision blades, which means it is able to detect the contours of your face to leave you as hair-free as possible. The launch of the shaver took the product to even greater heights, as it was given the seal of approval by none other than our own astronaut, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphor Shukor, who had this to say: “It is a good way of showing the world that space research and technology can be applied in so many ways in our lives, even for something ordinary like the shaver.” MARCH 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

Datuk Nicol David Crowned as Longest-reigning Squash Queen Homegrown squash champion, Datuk Nicol David smashed a world record as she marked her 106th month as the world’s number one female squash player. With this feat, she surpasses Susan Devoy’s previous record of 105 months, who was a fourtime world champion from New Zealand. In other words, Datuk Nicol David has held steadfast to her spot for almost nine years. The 31 year-old Penangite first staked her claim on top of the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) rankings list in 2006, and has since gone on to win as many as eight World Championship titles. She also counts two Commonwealth Games gold medals and four Asian Games gold medals among her stellar accolades. As for the woman herself, she only has this to say: “Being number one is something you have to earn every day. For me, it is really about playing the tournaments. Everything else is a bonus.”

Say It with Printed Skirts I
s it just us, or is there something undeniably swoon-worthy about graphic print skirts? Long, short, bubble, A-line, circle or mini; all are equally appealing to us. Don’t get us wrong, trousers are great and all, and we’re big fans of dresses, but when it comes to skirts – let’s just say we’re a bit overzealous about the potential of graphic skirts. Whether it’s for your weekend outfit or work attire, striking graphic skirts are here to stay! The fashion scene is still swamped with prints and patterns to the point that it’s become a challenge not to spot printed pieces being showcased everywhere! While wearing prints from head-to-toe appears to be easy and quirky for runway fashion models and daring trend-setters, it is not impossible for mere mortals like us to pull off these print-themed skirts as well. One of the classic tricks is to wear the most basic shirt possible and allow your skirt to take the centre stage. We could also team bold prints with a contrasting muted colour for a chic and wearable ensemble. The right graphic skirt with bold and sharp prints can breathe new life into your wardrobe. From knee length black pencil skirts for the office, to denim style for a day out, printed skirts elevate you from boring to memorable with no additional effort. Also, contrary to fashion myth that condemns prints as non-flattering, the right graphic skirt will actually camouflage and enhance your shape. From your best friend’s closet, local boutiques to high-end clothing stores, we continue to witness an assortment of graphic skirts that are adorned with geometrical patterns, shooting stars, floral and animal prints. Embracing trendy prints, we’ve included a series of budget-friendly skirts to bust you out of a style rut!

hen it comes to graphic skirts, it all boils down to an ultimate concern: are print-themed get-ups wearable? Yes, these skirt styles are perfect for trendsetters or fashionistas who love adding bells and whistles to their outfits, but for ladies who worry (even the teensiest bit) about the width of their legs, embracing summer’s fixation with printed bottoms can be a challenge. While we think you’re gorgeous and shouldn’t have to give a hoot about any so-called figure flaws, we do acknowledge that there’s a right way to wear a power print without feeling self-conscious. Here are some secrets to pull off wearing a graphic skirt. As a rule of thumb, always remember to keep the rest of your ensemble crisp and clean, and opt for sleek accessories to provide some extra polish. Floral Craze: With fashion’s ongoing love affair with floral prints, practically nothing can ever go wrong with floral. When choosing a floral print however, remember that light colours and small patterns are best suited to owners of fine thighs. On the contrary, if you are insecure about your hips, do pay attention to large patterns and focus on the darker shades. Geometrical Prints: Plaid, stripe, rhomb and houndstooth are no stranger to us. They are known to be the classics for

geometrical print skirts. So, which one to choose? If you have slim hips, horizontal stripes and houndstooth will suit you the best. For ladies with rounded hips, go for plaid, rhombus and houndstooth and if you have fuller hips, opt for thin vertical strips and dark colours. Animal Kingdom: Donning any animal prints (whether it’s leopard or python) also has its own rules. When choosing an animal printed skirt, take into consideration the features of your body shape. While light and vibrant coloured print immediately attract attention, print in classic dark colours will balance out the look. Need a visual? You’re in good luck! For better exposure, the roadshow was held at two different locations, including the Bukit Jalil Putra Indoor Stadium and at INTI International College, Subang Jaya. At the first location, which was at the Bukit Jalil Putra Indoor Stadium, the roadshow was held in conjunction with G.E.M’s X.X.X. concert here in Malaysia. There, AOC held an exciting game where contestants tried to grab as many “tokens” as possible in an airbox chamber. Prizes included AOC merchandise such as AOC/Rapoo Bluetooth Mini Speakers, AOC Football Fever Cooler Bags, and AOC Football Fever Key Pouches. As for the second location, the AOC roadshow took place at INTI International College, Subang Jaya. Once again, there were prizes that were given out, including AOC stationery holders and AOC sunscreen protectors. The highlight however, was a mini-tournament where participants duked it out in a game called ‘Typing of the Dead: Overkill’. After some furious typing, Lum Weai Lie emerged victorious to snag himself a brand-new 76 series monitor.

Age of Eclipse 10 young designers from INTI Centre of Art & Design (ICAD)’s Diploma in Fashion Design recently sent 40 avant-garde designs down the runway for their big graduation fashion show. It was the culmination of nearly three years of research, sketching and sewing, and the graduates did not disappoint. Age of Eclipse, which refers to the contrast in celestial events like solar and lunar eclipses, gave the designers the opportunity to experiment with dark and bright fabrics. Ultimately, the honour of Best Fashion Design went to Andrew Khoo, who was also a finalist in STYLO 2014. His, and a few of his fellow graduates’ designs are the highlight of this month’s Campus Couture.
Pale Flower of Darkness collection Jacey Lim Qher Xin The story: Jacey Lim’s designs are a combination of Chinese and Russian influences, two countries which were chosen for their rich culture and traditional handmade crafts. The inspiration for the collection was derived from the artistic techniques that go into creating traditional Chinese fans as well as the royal costumes of imperial Russia. As a result, the final designs feature a dark palette with touches of bright details. 26 | CAMPUS PLUS
Goddess of the Moon collection Andrew Khoo Ming Shen The story: Influenced by the mysterious culture of the Arabic dunes and mythology of Greek goddesses, the collection’s palette consists of black and gold, with massive avant garde headgear to enhance the grandeur of the designs. As a whole, it represents a generation of strong, brave and powerful women.
Rhina collection Michelle Lee Cheah Yee The story: Like Jacey Lim’s collection, Michelle Lee’s designs took cues from China and Russia, although the influences are played out differently. ‘Rhina’ has a brighter palette, as the colours are lifted off the traditional Chinese fan and umbrella. It also features details in the form of beading and lacework, which is a nod to the Russian traditional headpiece - kokoshnik. Fabrics were varied and layered to create a greater visual impact.
Versatile Venus collection Jadeline Cheng Chia Yin The story: Fabric layering, subtle sheer panels and contrast panelling are the trademarks of Jadeline Cheng’s graduate collection. The designs symbolise a strong type of femininity, as evident by their bold proportions and versatility. These are looks that can be worn in everyday life, and transition effortlessly from daytime chic into night time classy.
Victorian Kimono collection Clare Ng Ja Lech The story: A blend of Victorian styles and kimono prints, Clare Ng’s designs feature cream colours like dusty pink to exude a feminine and romantic vibe. The silhouettes of the designs are primarily Victorian, while the fabrics are inspired by kimono prints.

Alternatives to lipstick
MARCH 2015
Lovely Luscious Lips, Without
! k c i t Lips
A gorgeous pair of lips plays an important role in making you look attractive and beautiful. When they look beautiful, you automatically get a boost in selfconfidence, which goes a long way. However, there are many lipsticks out there that are made with ingredients that leave your lips dry and chapped after use. There are even lipsticks that somewhat melt, leaving smudges. With so much hassle, it may be wise to consider some alternatives to lipstick. Here are some:
1
Lip Stains Lasting up to eight hours, lip stains offer amazing staying power. As its name suggests, it is designed to temporarily “dye” your lips in colour, while retaining their natural look. Once applied, it’ll stay on your lips. There’s no need to worry about smudges and there’s no need for a touch up as the stain lasts for almost an entire day! It’s also worth mentioning that Lip Stains do not damage your lips. Instead, they help to moisturise it, thanks to balm-like ingredients. Apart from that, it’s also tasteless and non-greasy, making it as though there’s nothing on your lips. What’s more important though, is that you can now say goodbye to lipstick stains on your teeth or cups.

2
Lip Balms Mainly used to moisturise your lips, lip balm also comes with colour nowadays. Just apply these coloured lip balms and your lips will be turned into plump, highly moisturised, soft and vibrant lips. Unlike lipsticks, lip balms can be used everyday without any worries. In fact, it is recommended to use them on a daily basis as they help to maintain the suppleness of your lips, without a ton of effort. They also protect your lips from the sun, as they offer SPF protection.
4
Lip Liners As its name suggests, lip liners are used to mark the outline of the lips, hold lipstick or lip gloss in place, and define the shape of your lips to make them stand out more. Furthermore, lip liner prolongs your lipstick colour’s staying power and prevents it from “bleeding”. You can even use lip liner as lipstick. What’s great is that they come in a wide range of colours for you to choose from!
5
Lip Plumpers A good lip plumper can delicately enhance shape and add volume to your lips. However, some lip plumpers only last for a while, so you will have to reapply it constantly. Similar to lip balm, lip plumpers normally contain powerful moisturising ingredients to keep your lips soft and hydrated. Another great thing about lip plumpers is that they can be worn under lipstick, allowing you to get luscious, great-looking lips! As this article implies, there are many alternatives to lipstick. They come in various shapes and sizes, but they perform the same role of lipstick – to beautify them lips. We’re not saying that lipstick isn’t a great means to beautify your lips, it’s just that there are plenty of alternatives and that you may find them to be better. Have fun trying them out!
3
Lip Crayons Lip crayons are a combination of every make up for your lips that you could possibly imagine. They are fun, cute, adorable and incredibly easy to use. Similar to how you apply lip balm, all you have to do to apply lip crayon is swipe them across your lips. They’re somewhat magical as they can hydrate and smoothen your lips like a balm, last like a stain, and when applied, gives a shiny, gloss-like effect. FEB 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

As for the mask itself, it’s black in colour, because active charcoal is one of the ingredients used in this mask. The use of active charcoal supposedly makes the mask more effective at clearing up clogged pores. Apart from that, this mask is also said to help to absorb excess sebum, for healthier skin. Other ingredients include: Retinyl Palmitate, to help control sebum secretion and stimulate skin rejuvenation; Zinc Sulfate, to tackle excess sebum, regulate surface shine while purifying complexion; And Willow Bark Extract, which helps exfoliation and the removing of impurities with blemish-control properties.

take off the mask, before you learn that you’re allergic to the mask, the hard way. Unlike any other mask I have tried before, this mask was comparatively thicker, and its adhesiveness was rather good. It clung on to the skin perfectly, which allowed me to do other things, without being too concerned about it. I was able to complete some chores, watch some YouTube videos and surf the Internet, without ever having to re-adjust the mask. This is really amazing as a lot of the masks that I’ve tried, required me to lie down once I applied them.
According to the directions, it is recommended to leave the mask on for 15 minutes, but since I was doing other stuff with the mask on, I left it on a little bit longer, which was for about 20 minutes. After that, I massaged the remaining essence gently for 30 seconds and left it for another 30 seconds for complete absorption as suggested. The result after one use? My face did feel more hydrated and supple. Perhaps the strongest effect was from the peppermint, which left me
extremely refreshed. That being said, after about 15 minutes, the effect died down, and upon closer inspection, my face was indeed less oily. There’s no evidence of smaller pores, but I’m certain that after multiple uses, the effect would be more noticeable. If you are interested to try the b.liv Absolute Matte mask, there’s a way to get even better results, and that’s by using their “off with those heads blackheads sebum gel” in tandem with this mask. Supposedly, this combo will be able to remove those stubborn blackheads and whiteheads easily in just 14 days. In addition, it keeps excessive oil secretion under control while preventing future breakouts.

ne of the best accessories for a guy is a watch. For a start, a watch can tell a lot about the character of its wearer. There are sporty watches, simple yet functional watches, and even incredibly sophisticated watches. Regardless of which kind of watches tickle your fancy, wearing one gives you a boost in confidence because it shows that you’re keeping track of time, while looking suave. There are many different types of watches. The most common are those that sport rubberised straps. More often than not, these kind of watches are geared towards sports. Casio’s G-Shock series for example, are synonymous with outdoor activities and are known to be able to operate in the harshest of environments. They’re also relatively light, so they don’t get in the way. Strap on a G-Shock with sporty attire and you’re all set for a day at the gym. If you don’t really enjoy sports, but prefer instead to sit back and read a good book, then you may want to look at something with a steel strap. A good example would be from Calvin Kleins’ new Alliance collection, or even Luminox’s SPACE series. Perhaps you’re into sophisticated things. If so, then you’ll like the Swatch SISTEM51. The front is rather simple, but take a look at the back of the watch and you’ll see the innards of the watch moving! Truth be told, the SISTEM51 is one of the simplest automatic watches in the market today, but seeing how it ticks makes it seem more sophisticated than it really is. It’s always a good idea to get more than one watch, so you can effectively mix-and-match your attire with the right watch. This month, we’re featuring some of the latest watches available from the likes of Calvin Klein, Luminox, Ice-Watch and Swatch!

? g n i k c i T s ’ t Wha I
f you ever wondered why mechanical watches cost so much more than quartz and digital watches, the explanation can be summed up in one word : craftsmanship.
To better explain, it’s best to begin with the different types of movements watches have. In general, analogue watches have two types of movement: quartz and mechanical. Watches that make use of a quartz movement are generally cheaper because they have few moving parts and are powered by batteries. As for mechanical watches, watchmakers meticulously hand-assemble them using very intricate parts. These watches are powered by energy from a wound spring, which is then transferred to a series of gears and springs.
Mechanical watches can further be divided into two: manual and automatic. Manual mechanical watches require users to manually turn the crown of the watch, which in turn winds a spring to store energy. This energy will then be slowly released to other gears and springs. As for automatic mechanical watches, there’s an additional rotor mechanism inside, which stores energy for the spring as the user wears it. This eliminates the need for the user to manual winding. A good way to determine if an analogue watch uses mechanical or quartz movements, is to see the movement of the second hand. A watch that uses a mechanical movement will have a “sweeping” motion while one that uses quartz will have individual ticks.

melancholy. Listen carefully to the lyrics of this song and you’ll realise that Combs is actually telling a story that’s truly worth listening to. Up next is ‘Nothing To Lose’, a relaxing mid-paced ballad with lovely string arrangements. If you’re looking for something more contemporary, then listen to ‘Foolin’, a unique pop melody that combines rock ‘n’ roll and a little bit of country music. Apart from that, ‘Strange Bird’ is another song worth mentioning, as it conveys a certain level of innocence. However, ‘In The Name of You’ seems like the most outstanding track of the entire album. It makes Combs’ voice shine and it is rare to see him perform a soulful ballad. There’s also ‘A Month of Bad Habits’ that is a song about loss, regret and the search for forgiveness with a fractured guitar. Combs has proven to us that there is still a plenty of valuable country music out there. This album is more complex compared to his debut album and is much more relatable on an emotional level.
there’s a rather interesting song that tells a story with an unexpected twist. This song is called ‘Integrity’, where Charisse Mills is featured as a girl called Integrity in this song. We have decided not to reveal the amazing twist of the story, so we will say no more about this song. Apart from that, there’s ‘Time of Our Lives’, which is a feel-good party song for Friday as it will take all your stress away...that is until Monday arrives. Perhaps one of the best songs on the album is ‘Take You There’ as Ne-Yo’s vocals and his ability to sing falsetto is demonstrated. It doesn’t stop there. Ne-Yo continues to show his musical and lyrical talent in a hipgospel-inspired track, ‘Religious’, where Ne-Yo’s clean vocals are splendid and is accompanied by loud trumpets. Ne-Yo’s vocal and storytelling are what make him outstanding and Non-Fiction showcases his growth and understanding of how to create catchy melodies and stories to captivate his listeners. If you love to listen to a story through music, we recommend you to get yourself a copy.
We Are Undone Two Gallants
It has been three years since their previous album, The Bloom and the Blight. But now, this folk rock duo are set to release their fifth studio album, which is titled We Are Undone! Two Gallants are renowned for their raw honesty in their sound. They don’t hide behind effects and post-production, and that’s what makes people like them. Two Gallants is a rock act, so it isn’t surprising it begins
Nick Jonas Nick Jonas
The youngest sibling of the Jonas Brothers has released his self-titled album Nick Jonas, which is also his second studio album. It is actually an interesting transition for Nick Jonas as he started off as a Disney boy-band member to become a solo artist in a totally different genre. After being in the group for seven years, it’s good to see him grow up a little. It seems like he is looking for the right sound for himself and I think we have a winner in this self-
with a fascinating guitar solo, which then transforms into a strong guitar riff that continues throughout the song. Their title track, ‘We Are Undone’ definitely showcases their ability and passion for rock music. The album continues with ‘Incidental’ and ‘Fools Like Us’, both of which could easily get plenty of playtime on air due to their heavy guitar riffs and catchy lyrics. Fortunately, it’s not all about the guitars. “Invitation To The Funeral” is a song that opens with a beautiful piano melody before changing into an attractive blues song. If you’re looking for something slow and dreamy, then you should listen to ‘My Man Go’, ‘Katy Kruelly’ and ‘Heartbreakdown’. These three songs are incredibly pleasant and enjoyable because they all have that blues style going on with emotionally heartfelt lyrics and ballads. We Are Undone is another fine addition to Two Gallants’ catalogue. It is an amazing piece of work with overwhelming power. This is an album that’s worth a listen.
titled album. ‘Jealous’ is undoubtedly the star of this album, because it’s truly an amazing radio-friendly song. It kicks off with a round of steady drum beats, which is slowly taken over by a funky ‘80s vibe, making it extremely catchy. Coming up next is ‘Warning’, another catchy and uplifting mid-tempo track that will definitely get stuck in your head for a while. The first ballad on the album, ‘Push’ is a surprise to us. Here, Jonas showcases his dreamy falsetto and song-writing skills nicely. In addition, ‘Avalanche’ is a song that is worth looking into for a moment, because both Demi Lovato’s vocals and Jonas’ vocals are impressive in this song. The final song ‘Nothing Would Be Better’ is our favourite in the whole album! Its melodic vocals and heartfelt lyrics have captured our heart successfully. This is an album that definitely shows Jonas in a new light - he is no longer the boy that we once knew. Today, he stands out with his own style and we have got to admit that it suits him very well. It is a good album, so get your copy today!

So You Know Everything About
Fences? The much anticipated album, Lesser Oceans is finally here!
Why did it take so long to put together your second album Lesser Oceans? We needed to get a label and getting signed to a major label is very hard. I think the signing process alone took a year. Writing the records didn’t take that long. I had the demo of the album written and finished in two weeks. It was all the stuff behind the scenes, work and things like that is what took so long because you’re on someone else’s schedule. I can’t put out an album when I say I think it’s time. It’s like you have a staff of 50 people and someone else’s money and they’re the ones making decisions for you. Like they say, “This record should come out in spring.” And then they say “Wait. Wait. You have touring; you should do it in fall. Let’s put it right out at the beginning of next year because we know you have to do this video.” It’s this kind of things that don’t really have much to do with any sort of headline or anything. So what are some stories behind the songs on your upcoming album? Do you have any particular favourites? I like ‘The Lake’ a lot. That song came to me as I was looking at a photo of my guitar player and his father on a lake house up in New Hampshire. He took the photo by a frozen lake and everything felt really still. He was like kind of on hiatus or something and I thought it was really beautiful. I thought about that, so it’s like maybe a relationship or something and so he said, “I’ll call you up when lake is revived.” I write a good amount of songs through a photo honestly, so I kind of tell stories. You can see pictures with a kind of still life and you can create whatever stories you want and there’s a lot of freedom doing that. A lot of things from books or movies could get you aspired from just one line or one character or something like that. There are tons of ways to write songs. So the “Arrows” video has a very West Anderson feel to it, but was also directed by Jason Koenig and John Keatley. Why did you choose to work with them and how much say did you have in the making of the film? I chose to work with them because they have kind of been long time contributors and friends of mine, especially Macklemore. He likes to work with people he trusts and people who are his friends. It just kind of makes things easier. A lot of times you can acquire a director where they don’t really know you and you don’t really know them and it can be kind of difficult. I think we’re aware that the production is so big that it’s going to take so long. Let’s just use people that we’re all very
comfortable with, so that a lot of challenges on a personal level could express your vision. So that was a strong thing for that situation and despite the faith of the video, I had quite a lot of say in it, like the kind of colours and set design and also the story and some of the casting. I worked really closely with a lot of these things. It’s a very stressful video for me. It got a lot of friends and family in it and it’s a very personal video. How would you personally describe your brand of music? It’s hard to say. I mean I think it’s just me describing the family I described. The way that I dress, I wouldn’t want to put it in a category. This album is not an album that I think is sort of like 80’s popular music. But there’s also something that I think we’re really missing, like Classic Country Johnny Cash Sun Records stuff and even think that some Post Punk kind of songs, songs about angels. To me, I think especially in this era of art, art is sort of a collage. There is no music of now. “When people look back at this time, they’re not going to say music sounded like this” because there isn’t anything. I think all people are really doing is pulling lots of things from different time periods and that’s what I’m doing as well. You’re a former jazz student playing the upright bass at Berklee College of Music. What got you into jazz and what got you out of it? I think I found that jazz has efficiency and chaos to it. I felt like “The Boinkers” because they used to punk rock. I always felt that with jazz. I mean the core changes so fast and the melodies are so frantic. I felt like that sounded more like youth to me. It really spoke to me and the thing is, I never really got out of it personally. I still listen to it and I still respect it just as much. I just sort of realised that was not my delivery system, if you get what I mean. That’s not me. That’s how I wanted to choose to represent myself as an artist, but I don’t regret it and I still listen and respect jazz. What is your artistic purpose? I want to participate in culture. I don’t just want to live and take. I want to give something and leave something behind. Not in a sense that I want to get into some sort of immortal legacy in my work. I would to just like leave something saying I was alive on this planet. I want to create something and when I’m gone, it will remain. (Interview courtesy of Warner Music Malaysia)

EXIT, STAGE LEFT
MARCH 2015
Actions Speak Louder than Words Sometimes, the only way to treat misbehaving fans is to walk away. That’s exactly what EXO did during the Nature Republic fan event, which was held in Seoul earlier this year, in January. According to reports, several EXO members, the emcee and even local police tried to calm the crowd of excited fans, but when they were ignored, EXO members decided to leave the stage to let things settle down a little. The commotion began when a fan fell down at the front of the crowd. EXO member D.O. noticed the incident and gently asked the crowd to calm down. In addition, the emcee for the event also repeated the request, but it was to no avail. After a third plea from another EXO member, Baekhyun, the fans still did not calm down. Not wanting anyone else to get injured, Baekhyun said “This is very unfortunate. I think it would be better if we go off stage first.” He also apologised
and explained that EXO cannot stay if fans won’t calm down. The group did leave the stage for a couple of minutes, causing further screaming from the crowd. After a short while, EXO returned to the stage to finish the event. This scene marked another example of just how extreme EXO fans are when showing admiration towards the group. Prior to this, fans of EXO were banned from attending live recordings of SBS’s music show, Inkigayo, due to massive disorderly conduct. If you didn’t yet know, fans of EXO have officially made a name for themselves as the most difficult fans for event organisers to deal with.

Deja Vu
Jonghyun
Sonamoo
Jonghyun shows he is all about that “Base” with his muchanticipated first extended play under SM Entertainment. Here, he collaborates with various artists to produce music that he said he truly believes reflects his taste in music. Prior to this album, he serenaded us with ballads, but he revealed that he wasn’t really comfortable with that genre. We find out what his music really is like in this album! The album opens with ‘Deja Boo’, a soft, catchy and funky R&B song that somehow encourages one to listen to the entire album in one sitting. Moving on, there’s ‘Crazy’, whose piano bits are absolutely mesmerising, blending jazzy undertones and his husky vocals very well. While it may have jazzy undertones, this track is still a hip-hop/pop track that shows Jonghyun’s musical potential and talent. However, among all the songs on this album, ‘Love Belt’ is our favourite in Base. It is a beautiful duet between Younha and Jonghyun with a slow-paced tune and vocals that are just as laid-back. Needless to say, the two harmonise beautifully in this song, which makes it all the more captivating. In a nutshell, this album combines soul, R&B and funk together, making it a wellpolished product that’s different than your standard K-pop album. Jonghyun’s talents and versatility are greatly highlighted in the album. If you’re into K-pop, there’s no reason not to get this album.
TS Entertainment’s new seven-strong girl group Sonamoo, has released a six-track mini album. Various music styles are included on the album, with strong musical influence from the likes of Secret, Apink and SISTAR being obvious. We were able to listen to this album, and here’s what we think of it. A ballad intro song with breathy vocals, ‘Into Me’ launches the album. Although it only lasts for a minute, it is surprisingly comforting and dreamy. Next up is the title track ‘Deja Vu’, a hip-hop track with vocals that highlights the vocal range of each of Sonamoo’s members. The pounding beats and the layering of different elements are the best part of the song. The album continues with ‘People’s Little Sister’, which is a good, catchy and radio-friendly pop song. There’s a happy vibe to it and it makes you want to dance along with them. Up next is ‘Just Go’, a song that we liked the most in this entire album. It combines jazz instrumentals with an upbeat pop track, making it incredibly sweet and catchy. The album ends with a wellcrafted ballad, ‘Everlasting Love’. Overall, as a debut album, we really think that Deja Vu is nicely done and we truly enjoy this album. Grab this album now because it’s definitely worth your time.

Jung Yong Hwa
Davichi
The leader, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band CNBLUE, Jung Yong Hwa, has released his first solo album. Titled One Fine Day, this album has greatly reflected his capability as a songwriter and vocalist. Teaming up with several artists to give this album numerous musical styles, One Fine Day has a very interesting character. The orchestral interlude ‘Intro’ kicks off the album in a grand manner. It is an instrumental ballad that runs for about 40 seconds, but its melody is beautiful. Following up from the intro is ‘One Fine Day’, a song that seems to show a more sentimental side of Jung. Here, he sings in a slow yet melancholic manner that serves to make the song a really emotional one. ‘Cruel Memories’ is another good song that’s gotten stuck in our head. It is an uncommon pop-rock ballad with splendid melody. For something a little more energetic, you’ll love ‘Energy’. As its name suggests, this track brings with it a youthful appeal, thanks to some cheerful guitar playing. The last song in this album, ‘Checkmate’, is also in our opinion, the strongest. Here, Jung collaborated with JJ Lin and together, give a very powerful performance. Our verdict? We have fallen in love with Jung Yong Hwa and we can’t help but looping this album. This is definitely an album that you shouldn’t miss! Get it now.
Korean duo Davichi has released their fourth mini album, which is simply titled Hug. Davichi is a special and outstanding duo because both the members harmonise well, as if there is only one voice and one artist. This album begins with beautiful acoustic guitars and classical stringed instruments with Davichi’s simple yet lovely voices in ‘Two Women’s Room’. For something that’s a little more heartbreaking, listen to ‘Cry Again’. You know those songs that they play when the main character realises he/she has been cheated on? Well, ‘Cry Again’ could definitely be one of those songs. However, if you need a song that keeps you in high spirits, then ‘Sorry, I’m happy’ is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Here, the duo sing in a soft and tenderly manner, akin to singing a lullaby. However, the music is rather upbeat, so it’s all good! Continuing the trend of soft and melodious singing, ‘Spring’ is a song that’s reflective of a person’s renewed determination, after a cold season. The cold is still felt, but there’s warmth just around the corner. With an elegant yet haunting melody, this song is rather unique in the album. An impressive collection of music from Davichi, Hug is definitely an album that you ought to get, especially if you love slow songs.

suffering at the hands of abuse
MARCH 2015
, n w Do Not Out
But
Stories exist for many reasons – to educate, entertain and even to pass down a society’s culture from one generation to the next. In this issue, we’ll share with you Bino’s story, a story that’s filled with pain and suffering. The purpose of us sharing this story is so that awareness is spread; that the circle of abuse has to be stopped and that there are outlets to seek help and asylum.
My Name is Bino The Nightmare Continues I would love to tell you that I had a great childhood like any other kid, but that would be a lie. I was in fact, a victim of abuse. It started in 1994, when I was four. My mother had a boyfriend, who was big and constantly angry. He would often beat her up over the smallest of things; I remember him banging her head against the wall and twisting her arms, just to get more money to fuel his gambling habits. My mother did not retaliate, saying that it was a life destined for her and myself. Unsatisfied with beating only my mother, I soon became the victim of his wrath as well. Fearing for my life, I did almost everything he asked. I had to do things for or with him, just so I could get my meals. I would do just about anything he said, because I was hungry. He would always remind me how my mother got beaten up because she didn’t listen to him. From there, it escalated. He started molesting me. At times, when I did not want to do things for him, he would get violent and start to pull my hair or pinch my stomach. Other times, he would be nice to me like a caring father, who would allow me to request any meals or treats from him. But that was once in a blue moon. After a while, I was used as a gambling tool for him and his brothers. They used my body and dignity to gamble, to see who could get me naked first. They molested me as well.
Not long after that, I was found by a man in 1995 and put in an orphanage where my mother could work and support me. I thought I had finally escaped the living hell that I had faced at home, and could now start anew. For the first year in the home, it was difficult for me to fit in as I had to learn about many things,
such as love, trust and healthy hugs. Confused and angry more than anything, I was very violent and rude towards the people there. Being violent and isolating myself from the rest of the inhabitants of the home was the only thing I could do to feel safe. That worked, until the home manager hired a couple who turned out to be abusive as well. At the home, I was hung upside down on the staircase for being the slowest to finish my meals. I was also beaten on the back because
What the Experts Say About Abuse Dr. Anasuya Jegathevi Jegathesan, Senior Lecturer and Counsellor at HELP University
On the Types of Abuse: Physical abuse is the most well-known type of abuse. This is where people are hitting you or hurting you physically. Sexual abuse is usually perpetrated by family members or sometimes strangers. It is not necessarily rape. Touching, stroking or any disturbance in a sexual manner also count as abuse. Emotional abuse happens among parents who pay for everything and give their children everything they need, except for attention. When attention is obtained, it’s usually negative. Psychological abuse happens when people send you on guilt trips constantly. Under the guise of compliments, they break you down. It also goes for people who keep calling others bad names, or those who bully. On The Recovery Process: To recover, a victim simply has to go on living, especially those who have children. They have to make the sometimes difficult choice to stay alive and be happy, and only then can they seek the help they need.

I had difficulties learning. The nightmare however, continued when the sexual abuse came back into the picture. I was molested on the staircase, in the bathroom, and was even awakened in the middle of the night to be “punished” for no reason. I remember feeling stuck in this life of mine and ended up taking it out on others in school. At the age of 11, I started skipping classes and hiding under the school stairs. I also remember being envious of the children who had parents that brought them food at school, while I survived by stealing food in the canteen. My resentment was somewhat lessened when I was beating up girls whom I thought had better families than I did. Every night, when I returned home, I would pray to God to literally take my life away. When I was 12, the anger in me grew. I had become angry at everything in life, because of all the things that happened and were happening to me. I felt powerless. If I spoke out, threats that my mother would be killed could have been realised. If I spoke out, people would never believe a word I said. If I spoke out, people would hate me for making stories up.
What the Experts Say About Abuse Mr. Alex Lui An Lieh, Lecturer at HELP University
On Abuse Faced by Men: Male abuse is often physical, whether at the hands of women or men. Sadly, males find it harder to seek help because of the association of men and toughness. They could resort to self-destructive ways to cope such as escaping into virtual worlds via gaming, drinking or worse still, suicide. To combat this, show no fear. Often times, the abusers themselves have suffered similar incidents and get a sense of superiority by abusing others. By not showing your fear, you deprive them of the satisfaction they get from bullying you. Bullies are also the minority. When the majority understand that there is strength in numbers, they will be instilled with a sense of community and use their cumulative power to stand up to their perpetrators. To remove the stigma against abuse suffered by males, there must be widespread understanding that abuse is not a gender issue.

What the Experts Say About Abuse Marian E. Arumugam, Head of Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) & Health Services Centre (HSC) at Taylor’s University, Lakeside Campus
On What Friends, Family and Society Can Do To Help: Working with parents on these cases can help. It’s called family therapy, and it’s where parents are brought in along with the victim to weed out any issues that might be causing the problem. There are some victims who are afraid to voice out due to financial worries, as the perpetrator may be their provider or guardian. To remedy this, there needs to be more social welfare services that get more financial aid for students, in the event their study funds are denied by the perpetrator. For each state, social welfare groups ought to be properly installed. They should also provide therapeutic and financial support. More social workers and psychotherapists should be trained so that the right people can monitor victims’ education, their special needs and give them long-term care.
The Internal Struggle
With all the chaos going on in my life, I anchored what little existence I had with sports. I picked up sports after my primary school counsellor asked me to take up athletics for anger management. Sports was my first coping mechanism. I let go of all my anger on the field most of the time and began to like my counselling sessions. When I was transferred to high school, the orphanage I used to live in hired a male private counsellor to increase my self esteem and help me with my anger management. I did everything he said and never revealed that I was sexually abused in any way. On the last day of my counselling though, the 30th of March 2005, I broke down and told him that I was sexually abused and was still stuck in the same place, where my wellbeing was concerned. Despite all I had revealed to the counsellor, he left. He told me he wasn’t prepared for this kind of case. However, I had excelled tremendously both academically and athletically, but I was a numb girl who wished she was a strong man who could protect herself from harm and danger. The truth was, there I was again, feeling betrayed, lonely and stuck. At that moment, I felt that no help could come from anyone because no one really loved me. In the end, I made it a point to push
myself out of this pit of misery on my own. Therefore, I took psychology when I entered college, because I wanted to help myself get better and be normal. 2010 was the year where I struggled to discover myself.
Patching The Pieces
During college, there was a time I was required to get extra credit by attending counselling sessions for the trainee counsellors in my college. Initially, I wanted to mess around with the trainee, but as I sat there, I found myself answering earnestly about my life. I was secretly hoping that she could help me, but my hopes crumbled when she said that she wasn’t an expert in child abuse and trauma. Unwillingly, my tears once again begin to flow. I feared that my last resort of getting myself “fixed” was gone. The counsellor then stood up and left the room, and I thought my life had ended once again, but after a few minutes, she was back in the room, this time with her supervisor who said, “I can help you.” Thus, the counselling sessions began again. However, I never shared the abuse that I went through. The counselling sessions were more about who I am in the present. I struggled to put my life into words. What happened to me had disturbed me in every way, and had caused me to suffer from nightmares, flashbacks and panic attacks. I
2014 (Source: NST Online) Reported cases of domestic violence: 3,673 Reported cases of molestation: 1,225 Reported cases of rape: 1,815 was on the verge of being diagnosed with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Two years passed, and I still hadn’t shared anything about my abuse. In 2012, my counsellor had another career opportunity elsewhere and moved on with her life. I remember thinking to myself about how useless I had become as a person for not being able to talk about my abuse. Although I felt so broken and lost inside, I was able to disassociate my inner self from society. On the outside, I was the happiest girl that people could have around them. I made myself feel better by helping others who needed help or a listening ear. Along the way, I managed to find another counsellor who offered to help me grieve over the loss of my childhood. Back I went into counselling. It’s 2015 now, and I have been in counselling for almost three years with this new counsellor of mine. I’ve made great progress emotionally and socially, but still have frequent flashbacks during almost any time of the day. Sometimes, I would start panicking in the bus, in the toilet, in the movies or even when I am alone. I have also suffered an imbalance of the immune system and bowel problems. I have high levels of anxiety because of my heightened emotions in the past. However, my counsellor is very supportive, and she is someone whom I can call or text anytime of the day when I’m feeling uncomfortable. I also have a life partner who understands my past, my current state and is willing to stay in my future. Things would have been very different if I never went through abuse, but we can’t determine our future based on the things that could have happened. Hence, I have accepted that I was abused and that my abusers were all mentally unstable in some way. I have been working on my anxiety levels by taking up ‘Muay Thai’ and body combat, because taking up a sport that protects me makes me feel safe and lets me sleep at night. Although I don’t have a nuclear family, I have a very strong support system in my church, my counsellors and my circle of friends. I thank God that I have survived a painful and unexplainable childhood, and feel victorious conquering my daily mental difficulties. I believe that ‘what I put in my mind is what my action may become’, so I put that into practice by reminding myself of who I am in the present, and refuse to stay in the past or stay defeated. My name is Bino, and I’m a 27-year-old woman, who’s a victim of abuse.

MARVEL FANS ASSEMBLE!
MARCH 2015
Ultimate o i r T s u o l l e v r a M
I
f you didn’t yet know, Marvel Studios has a slew of interesting movies lined up for 2015. These movies are part of something called “Phase Three”, which consists of nine movies (with rumours and speculation of more to come). Here are my three personal picks from the announcements that I think no self-respecting Marvel fan should miss. The first drop in Phase Three and perhaps the most intriguing is ‘Captain America: Civil War’, which is scheduled for a May 2016 release. The story arc for ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is to be based on Mark Millar’s Civil War limited comic book series that ran from 2006-07. The plot of the comic series follows a framework storyline in which the U.S. government passes a Superhero Registration Act, designed to have super powered characters act under official regulation, somewhat similar to police officers. Many heroes are opposed to the act however, forming groups of resistance to the new law with Captain America in the lead. Conflict arises between them and heroes/villains in support of the act, with Ironman playing a major role; others like Spider-Man are caught in the middle of the crossfire. The comic series is an interesting read though there are almost certainly major plot details and spoilers for the movie. The Russo brothers have been confirmed to direct the third film and are working with the film’s writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, citing that it will be the “wrap-up” of the Steve Rogers storyline. Fingers are crossed for an actual Spiderman appearance in a full-fledged Marvel Studios movie.

Following up from ‘Captain America: Civil War’, is ‘Doctor Strange’, with a November 2016 release. Little is known about the actual plot line of the movie itself. In the comics, Doctor Strange was an exceptional but arrogant surgeon before his hands were destroyed and useless as a result of a car crash. He spends most of his fortune and time in pursuit of a way to fix his hands, consulting various doctors, homeopathic treatments and travelling around the world to remote regions for exotic cures, all to no avail. Depressed but still searching, Strange locates a hermit called the Ancient One in the Himalayas. The Ancient One at first refuses to help Strange because of his selfishness, but Strange proves himself when he discovers and thwarts Baron Mordo (the Ancient One’s disciple), from killing the old man. The Ancient One later teaches him the mystic arts. He is one of the most important recurring characters in the Marvel Universe, as he joins the New Avengers in the aftermath of the Civil War.
The last, but by no mean least of my picks is the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ part I and II, that are scheduled to be released in May 2018 and May 2019 respectively. These final movies of Phase Three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe harkens back to the first ‘Avengers’ movie where it is shown in the post credits scene, Thanos, one of the most enduring and powerful enemies of the Avengers, smiling at the challenge that heroes of Earth represent. Thanos, also known as the Dark Lord and dubbed the Mad Titan by the galactic communities, is a powerful cosmic warlord and is the master of the Chitauri army shown in the first Avengers movie. He possesses abilities common to the race he belongs to, the Eternals, but has them amplified to a higher degree through a combination of his mutant Eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and power bestowed by the abstract entity, Death. Demonstrating enormous superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, Thanos can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy and is capable of telekinesis, telepathy and matter manipulation, making him one of the most over-powered beings in the Marvel Universe. The Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones are to be major plot points in the two-part series. In the comics, the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity Stones, when wielded together, grants the bearer infinite powers when used within the universe of its origin. It is known that the Tesseract, the Aether and the Orb shown in previous movies are Infinity Stones, used in the comics in conjunction with the Infinity Gauntlet. Heaven help the Avengers if Thanos manages to acquire all Infinity Stones and The Gauntlet at the same time. With so many upcoming movies and a proven track record of the studio, the next few years looks to be glorious for any Marvel fan. Now the only thing better will be more details about that Deadpool movie…

While the world is still mesmerised by George Clooney’s wife, we are not too far behind with our very own version of Amal Alammudin. The young and brilliant Michelle Yesudas is a human rights lawyer in Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), a full-time activist and a part-time artist at Bunga Api Crafts. C+: Thank you for having this chat with us, Michelle. Please tell us a bit more about yourself. M: Hello! I guess I would describe myself as one of those people who strives to live two different lives at once. Ever since I was studying, I’ve only ever wanted to be involved in public interest litigation and human rights, either as a lawyer or as an activist. At the same time, I am also passionate in painting and experimenting with various ways of creating art, from traditional batik to jewellery and bookmarks. C+: What inspired you to be a human rights lawyer? Was there a significant event? M: It was sometime after reading a book titled ‘An Ordinary Person’s Guide to Empire’ by Arundhati Roy. I started realising how there were a lot of barriers for ordinary people to participate in the system. But more importantly, unlike other countries, Malaysia is a young nation that is slowly negotiating its relationship with democracy and civil liberties, and being involved in human rights puts me at the centre of the dialogue. With such a platform, I hope I can contribute in developing this relationship to one that benefits everyone. C+: How did you get involved with the human rights scene in Malaysia? M: Well, I began volunteering at the Women’s Aid Organisation and also assisted in some researches. As time went on, I was fortunate enough to cross paths with many inspirational people who helped enhance my understanding of human rights and guided me to achieve it at a grassroots level. C+: Can you tell us more about your job? Perhaps you could walk us through a typical day of what your job requires you to do?
M: Now this is the interesting part, there is basically no typical day for me. It can be a humdrum day, from preparing for cases, attending court rooms to interviewing clients. Or it may turn out to be a whirlwind day where 15 protesters are being held in a lock up and you are denied access to them for an hour under the scorching sun. At times, it can be very challenging and taxing, especially when it comes to planning campaigns on significant issues, (e.g. Campaign for free speech and to abolish the Sedition Act) as well as working with the Coalition on Stop State Violence. C+: What has been your most memorable case to date? (directly/indirectly involved). M: For me, it would be the case of Aminulrasyid, the fatal shooting of a young boy that was 14 years old. He had taken his sister’s car for a joyride and while he was speeding, police had gunned him down under the impression that he was a criminal. It is memorable in the sense that the death was so tragic and the boy was so young, but there has been no change in administration. This reinforces everyone with a sense of fear that if you are speeding at 4am, you could be mistaken as a criminal and gunned down. A mother is now childless and the pain in her voice each time she talks about her son is heart-wrenching and incomprehensible. It is a stark reality that no amount of money can replace his loss, but a more accountable method of policing will certainly reduce the chances of this happening again.
in every country and the depth of the problem varies from country to country. I find it important to break that cycle of violence and to have a democratic system that is fair, transparent and accountable for its actions. C+: As an artist in Bunga Api Crafts, can you tell us a little more about this passion and how it blossomed? M: It started when I was abroad and was incredibly homesick. To keep myself occupied, I started studying about Malaysian and Javanese culture during my free time and continuously sketched these traditional motives into my artworks. I also always wanted to be a political artist when I was younger. Along with a Malaysian twist and touch, I kick-started my journey by experimenting a lot with batik powder and watercolour. C+: Should a college/university student be interested to be involved in human rights activities, how can they prepare themselves and what should they look forward to? M: Doing homework on the cause, the issue and being genuinely interested in it would be the best attitude to carry forward into the field. An interest to creatively push messages across civil society would be an added bonus, but students would need to be aware that things can be very challenging and it is a long road ahead towards a ‘Human Rights-Compliant Malaysia.
C+: As one of the few young woman activists that are radically changing the lives of the vulnerable, what is the biggest career challenge you have faced so far? M: I’ve always been blessed with a lot of guidance from the senior lawyers that are in charge of LFL. As of now, my biggest career challenge would be the fact that I have to be very careful in everything I do. Being a very relaxed individual in general, this job has made me realised the need to scrutinise every detail carefully considering that the public interest is at stake! In fact, I am still in the process of learning on how to address this gracefully. C+: There are many aspects of human rights to champion for. Could you share with us what aspects you are most passionate about? M: As of now, I am most passionate about impunity and state violence. More often than not, when a state commits a crime against a civilian (sometimes through police violence or death in custody), the perpetrators will not be brought to justice merely because they are under the protection of state institutions. War on a Different Level R

Grey Goo
eal Time Strategy (RTS) is a genre of video games that have been rather neglected by developers, with only a few games of the genre released over the past few years. Grey Goo is a return to form by Petroglyph Games, with ex-members of Westwood studios who worked on great RTS games such as the original ‘Command & Conquer’ series and ‘Dune II’. Grey Goo is an RTS in the most traditional sense. You build bases to produce units and battle other players or AI over resources and supremacy in a map. There are three available races to choose from: The Beta, Humans and Goo, all of them with significant gameplay differences. The Beta construct their bases and expansions through hubs, with large hubs capable of supporting up to six structures; take out the Beta’s hubs and their structures will be inoperable. The Humans on the other hand, rely on their one and only core, with power lines connecting to their various structures; while they have the ability to teleport buildings within the power lines, destroying the lines will cause the connected buildings to be crippled. The Goo takes conventional base building and throws it out the window. The Goo create units by collecting resources and splitting themselves from a “Mother Goo”, they have no structures and thus are extremely mobile; and while they have no flying units, many of their other units are capable of traversing mountains, granting them strategic advantages. Personally, I prefer the turtle playstyle of the beta who have units that are capable of mounting walls. I found the Goo to be just as fun to play as, thanks to their rapid expansion
play style, it makes things rather interesting. As for Humans though, I found their reliance on power lines to be restrictive, but their units pack the most punch. While playing the game, I had the distinct feeling that the developers wanted to shift away and differentiate themselves from games that require you to micro-manage, such as the ‘StarCraft’ series. I don’t think this is a bad thing as many gamers are turned off by micro-managing. That being said, Grey Goo does require you to focus on resource management, expanding and a little micromanaging (deciding on which units to use to counter enemy units). There’s a limited amount of resources on every map, so you’ll have to quickly secure a resource pool before your enemy does. You’ll also have to spread your forces to where these resource pools are, so it’s a battle of wits, to put it simply. There is a story in Grey Goo and it can be experienced in the campaign. However, currently, there’s only one chapter in the campaign (with more to come, hopefully), where all three factions battle it out on a planet called Ecosystem Nine. As a whole, the overall plot is not overly complicated and easily digested. It could have used a little more character development though. In a nutshell, I enjoyed my time with Grey Goo, and with planned expansions and additional content, I highly recommend this game to fans of the RTS genre. Gamers who like the concept but find other RTS games to be intimidating, I recommend you to pick this up as well. JAN 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

KNOW YOUR NUTS
Some Nutty Facts
wellness by ivy chin
MARCH 2015
A
s with everything else in this world, the many nuts in this world were not created equal. Some taste better than others, and
some look more edible than others. Regardless of how they look or taste, most research agree that many nuts are bite-sized nutritional powerhouses that when consumed, provide plenty of health benefits.
1
One of the most underrated sources of nutrition, nuts are often misunderstood. Many believe that nuts are fattening and while it’s true that they contain fat and calories, they also contain essential and healthy fats. These healthy fats help to provide essential protein, fibre, unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals.
7
We managed to do some research and have narrowed down some of the most common nuts people consume today. Here’s a quick look at the health benefits of these nuts. Have fun reading and munching!
1. Walnuts Do you know it only takes about seven walnuts to get an incredible amount of antioxidants that are more powerful than vitamin E? Moreover, walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can’t be produced by our body. Omega-3 fatty acids help in reducing the risk for heart disease, cancer, premature aging, anxiety, stress level, diabetes and inflammation. Besides, eating walnuts can also reduce LDL, which is known as “bad cholesterol”.
2. Almonds If you aren’t a fan of dairy products or are lactose intolerant, but want to ensure you get enough calcium, then almonds are a good choice. It is because almonds are high in vitamin E, potassium and calcium. In addition, almonds can also improve your skin condition, decrease bad cholesterol as well as regulate your blood pressure.
3. Cashews They are an excellent source of magnesium, giving them the nickname “brainpower boosters”. Magnesium is good for you because it helps to improve your memory and protect you against age-related memory loss. Eating about 18 of these will supply you with almost 25 per cent of your daily needs.

zeaxanthin, which act as important contributors to healthy skin and vision. They also help you to fight bad cholesterol.
5. Pecans Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals, and has the most amount of antioxidants among all the other nuts. Traditionally, pecans are eaten to help prevent plague formation in your arteries and delay the development of degenerative neurological diseases.
6. Macadamias While Macadamia nuts are one of the most calorie-dense nuts, they also contain the greatest amount of healthy mono-unsaturated fat. For those who are unaware, mono-unsaturated fat helps to lower your bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
4. Pistachios
7. Hazelnuts
Being particularly rich in vitamin B6, pistachios are able to keep your hormones balanced and healthy. Furthermore, they are the only nut that have just the right amounts of lutein and
These nuts are a good source of protein, fibre, vitamin E and vitamin B. Hence, if you wish to improve your cardiovascular health and to manage type 2 diabetes, opt for hazelnuts!
Apart from that, hazelnuts may also maintain healthy skin and reduce the risk of dementia. They are so much more than a complementing flavour for coffee.
8. Chestnuts If you’re someone who counts calories, this is the nut for you! Chestnuts are relatively low in calories. It also contains no cholesterol and has very little fat, making it a glutten-free indulgence. Do bear in mind that only raw chestnuts are a good source of vitamin C and the recommended dose for daily consumption is about 100 grams.
A Nutty Affair At the end of the day, moderation is key, so don’t overeat any of the nuts mentioned above, and you should have yourself a healthy addition for your diet. Don’t worry about the fat that nuts contain as the fatty acids in nuts are hearthealthy. Just choose the type of nut that suits your needs and remember that even a little goes a long way! Packing your own lunch and having some nuts with it is starting to sound like a great idea!

DESIGN/FEATURES Fully coated in black, the AJ7260D/12 sports a streamlined and practical design, with frontfacing speakers and display, and controls for the separate docks on the top. It features two docking ports, one with a Lightning connector for the iPhone 5 as well as third generation iPads and above, and one 30-pin connector for older apple devices. There is also a USB port at the back of this device, but it serves only as a charging port. As mentioned, the buttons at the top of the device controls the docks individually, with fast forward/back, play/ pause and volume control buttons. Up to two alarms can be set, which is handy if you need to be alerted at different times of the day. The AJ7260D/12 also scores extra points for having a battery slot, so you can power it up and carry it around, if the need arises.
AUDIO QUALITY The AJ7260D/12 shines best with vocal heavy tracks such as ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’ by Tipitina. In songs such as these, the voices of the artists are crystal clear, making this device
an easy pick up for fans of acapella, jazz and blues. Lovers of bass-heavy music however, will find the AJ7260D/12 to be slightly lacking in the bass department. Overall however, the sound quality is above average. Speaking of that, the volume on this device is superb. When turned up to the max, the audio can be quite deafening.

Many people like to listen to music while exercising, as it is capable of enhancing your performance and elevating your mood among other things. The audio characteristics of this earphones is best described as being bass heavy. This is something expected however, as you’ll most likely be playing upbeat tracks when you’re working out. Overall, this earphones sound pretty good, though there is some echo to be heard, especially when playing songs with an emphasis on vocals.

The design of earphones are much more important in sports earphones than in ordinary ones for the reasons mentioned above. The ZTONE Sport features a wraparound ear design, which allows you to securely fit them into your ear without worrying about them dropping off when you’re up and about, doing your exercise. What’s great about these earphones is the fact that they come with “semi-custom moulded ear gels”, which is something that many of us have never heard about. Nevertheless, the ear pieces were highly comfortable, and putting them on was incredibly easy. The ear gels are removable and can be re-installed easily, which is a very nifty feature, especially if you’re one who constantly works out.

It comes bundled with a carrying case (with a metal hook), and two additional ear gels of different sizes (small, medium and large sizes, three in total). All said and done, I would definitely recommend the ZTONE Sport for individuals who love to exercise. If you fall into this category and would like to get a pair of earphones that won’t encumber you while you’re exercising, then this may just be what you’re looking for. With good build quality, an ergonomic design and decent sound quality, the ZTONE Sport is worth the consideration.

The Sci-Fi
t c e j o r P
Before we begin to recommend you some science fiction movies to watch, let us start this month’s Anime section by asking a question: Do you know who Satoshi Ito is? Better known by his pen name, “Project Itoh” (Ito Keikaku), was a Japanese science fiction author and illustrator who novelised ‘Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’. Unfortunately, he passed away at age 34 in March 2009, after a long battle with cancer. The video game ‘Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker’ and the ending of the manga ‘Aki Sora’ were dedicated to him. Apart from that, Ito’s science fiction novel ‘Genocidal Organ’ was ranked as the number one domestic sci-fi novel of the decade in Japan, while his second science fiction novel ‘Harmony’ was voted as one of the top Japanese science fiction novels. In addition, Toh Enjoe, who is also a Japanese science fiction author and has collaborated in a few projects with Ito, revealed the plan to complete Ito’s unfinished novel ‘The Empire of Corpses’ in January 2012. Amazingly, this novel has also been awarded as the best Japanese science fiction in 2012 and 2013 respectively. During the Noitamina Project Conference 2015, they have announced that an anime adaptation of the much-anticipated Project Ito’s novel ‘The Empire of Corpses’ will be featured. Furthermore, the details of ‘Genocidal Organ’ and ‘Harmony’ have also been revealed. In summary, all three Project Itoh’s movies will be premiering in 2015. Perhaps you’re still wondering just how good the late Project Itoh was, well go ahead and read the synopsis to see if you’re intrigued.
mastermind of the collapsed world system. It is a tough mission for him as he has to walk across the wreckage of civilisation to get the truth.
Harmony
Genocidal Organ (Gyakusatsu Kikan) The day Sarajevo was demolished by a homemade nuclear device, was the day war on terror erupted. The leading democracies changed into states that implemented total surveillance. In this new era, everyone is being observed and monitored. What makes it worse is the developing world has also been flooded with a wave of genocides. What happened to this world? Who caused the collapse of the world system? A government agent named Clavis Shepherd begins an investigation to determine the true nature of this new world, only to find something rather sinister – a genocidal organ. To learn more, he has to track down a mysterious American named John Paul who seems to be the
In the future, thanks to the medical nanotechnology, powerful ethics regarding social welfare as well as mutual consideration, a seemingly perfect Utopia is created. Sounds like a perfect world, doesn’t it? However, there are three young girls who stand against this totalitarian kindness and super medicine by attempting suicide through starvation. This plan doesn’t work, and one of the girls, Tuan Kirie grows up to be a member of the World Health Organisation. As a crisis endangers the harmony of the new world, Tuan re-encounters another member of her previous suicide plan. This time, they have to work together to save the planet from itself.
The Empire of Corpses (Shisha no Teikoku) This story is set late in 19th century Europe, where new technology that allows dead bodies to be installed with an artificial soul to create “Frankensteins” is invented. This is a world that uses corpses as labourers and soldiers to improve industrial development. We follow the story of a medical student in London, whose name is John H. Watson. Hired by the government, Watson is trained to become a secret agent and is given the task of infiltrating Afghanistan as an army medic. As he attempts to complete his mission though, he gradually learns about the shocking truth regarding these “Frankensteins”.

In a Nutshell
urrently working as a Sales Director, Nicholas Ng has always been in love with cars. His pride and joy however, is a car that not many would think to modify – a Nissan Skyline 350GT, which is better known as the Infinity G35 in Europe. When he got his hands on this car five years ago, the car was entirely stock. Eager to push the limit of the car even further, he decided to modify this car and turn it into something rather unique. To do this, he approached his contacts within the industry and began purchasing parts for the car. His first mission was to increase the overall power of the car. At stock, the car produces about 210HP on wheel. His target was to reach 300HP. After much research, he finally settled on supercharging it. The car now has an HKS supercharger system, which comes with both an air intake system and intercooler.
Owner’s Name: Nicholas Ng Car Model: Nissan Skyline 350GT, A.K.A. Infinity G35 Total Investment into car: About RM105,000 Horsepower: 330hp (On Wheel)
The next step was to ensure that the intake system and the engine would work in unison. Thankfully, the supercharger system that he bought, came with a HKS V-PRO engine management system. This system was tuned by Jun Furukawa, one of the most notable tuners in Malaysia and Singapore. Of course, Ng purchased a lot more equipment for this car to make it as powerful as possible, including a fuel injector taken from a Nissan GT-R R35; an ArqRay straight flow exhaust system with twin 3-inch mufflers; a Tomei extractor; a Sard Sports Catalytic Converter; a Skunk 2 Plenum spacer; and a Hot Inazma X-Power as well as a Hot Inazma Hyper voltage stabiliser, among other things. With so much power under the hood, Ng also had to modify his brakes and suspension to keep the car under control. He’s using Endless 6-Pot calipers for the front, and 4-Pot calipers for the rear, complete with an Endless 2-piece rotor system. As for the suspension, Ng uses an Ohlins Hi-Lo, Soft/Hard adjustable system. As for grip, he’s using Bridgestone RE11 255/35/19 for the front, and 275/35/19 for the rear, all of them fixed on 19-inch Rays rims. He’s also installed a full Cusco stabilising kit, for better body rigidity. Perhaps the most outstanding thing about Ng’s Skyline GT350, is the fact that he has a unique body kit that was made from scratch by Fuza Boutique. The design of this kit was based on the Nissan Fairlady 350z concept car. With air outlets on his bonnet and a full body kit, this is one Infinity G35 that you’ll never forget once you’ve seen it. The Hot Ticket Like most trips, the earlier you book, the better. You will also save a considerable sum if you book your tickets online as opposed to using a travel agent. Leave a tab open for AirAsia as well, so you can stay abreast of their latest promotions. Travelling during off-peak seasons will make a significant difference too. Don’t forget to compare ticket prices between arrival at Haneda or Narita Aiport either, as rates will differ based on the time of year. Narita Airport, while filled with more times for international flights, takes longer to go through immigration and customs, and also to arrive at the city centre. Haneda Airport is closer to Tokyo, and as less people go through it, the customs and immigration process gets shortened as well. However, flight times for Haneda, whether you’re arriving or departing, are more limited, and not always ideal.
Getting Around An absolute must-have for getting around Tokyo easily is a prepaid IC card. Think of it as Japan’s answer to our Touch ‘n Go. Available at all subway stations, there are two types: Pasmo and Suica. Suica cards are for JR (Japan Rail) stations, while Pasmo are for those that are not. They provide the utmost in convenience as they can be used to ride every bus and train in Greater Tokyo and most of Japan’s major cities. You can even use them to make purchases in a growing list of shops. A Suica card is yours for 2,000 yen (approx. RM60), and a Pasmo for 1,500 yen (approx. RM46). A refundable deposit of 500 yen is applicable for both, so you will be left with the balance to use as credit.

If you foresee a day packed with subway trips, getting a day pass is yet another sensible option. Sold at vending machines and train stations, they are valid from the first train of the day until the last. There are many types that cover various areas all over Tokyo, ranging from 700 to 1500 yen, so do invest a bit of time in researching these.
Hostel Sweet Hostel Staying in the city centre or near subway stations are usually expensive endeavours, so unless accommodation is one of the more important things to you, you are better off looking at areas outside of the city to save cost. Asakusa is a good place to start. Popular among low-budget travellers, it boasts a wide variety of hostels, dormitories and budget ‘ryokan’ (traditional Japanese inn). It’s also great for getting a feel of traditional Japan. Some of the highly-rated ones are Asakusa Smile, Backpackers Hostel K’s House Tokyo and Hotel Kaminarimon. That aside, you can also try your luck on AirBnB. To the uninitiated, it’s a website that connects hundreds of thousands of lodgings to travellers looking to rent more homely quarters for their stay, and at more reasonable prices too. Many of the renters here are letting out rooms in their own houses, a fact which lends itself to cleaner and more well-equipped accommodation.
A Rough Estimation KAITEN ZUSHI
Itadakimasu! We all gotta eat, so where to begin? Eateries in areas like Yoyogi and Harajuku offer lunch specials that will give you more bang for your buck, due to the higher populations of youths and students there. Sushi is a no-brainer as well, and you can find many inexpensive options in conveyer-belt restaurants (‘kaitenzushi’) across Tokyo. These spots are usually crowded though, so if you don’t mind standing while you eat, it’s not a bad place to satisfy your growling stomachs. Better yet, a plate of authentic Japanese sushi can be yours for just 100 yen (approx. RM3). You can also find wallet-friendly choices at subway stations and roadside stalls, although they won’t have any sitting room. One of them is the Yoyogi Park near the Harajuku station, which is one of the busier areas. If none of these suit your fancy, grocery stores provide a bunch of packaged meals like sushi, Japanese sweets and bento boxes. Buying them near closing time will even help slash 20 to 30% off your dinner. For novelty Japanese drinks, you’ll be able to find them at the numerous vending machines all over town. Some of them even offer canned soup, if you’re really strapped for cash.
Seeing is Believing If your experience with Tokyo has been limited to the silver screen so far, imagine how amazed you will be when you step into Shibuya’s fourway crossing, which has stolen the scene in movies from ‘Lost In Translation’ to ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’. Go at night and stand in the
Here’s a very rough estimation on how much you’ll need for a week long stay in Japan. Tickets – Approx. RM2,000 (via AirAsia) Food – Approx. RM300 Souvenirs – RM500 Travel – Approx. RM300 Accommodation – Approx. RM500 Total – Approx. RM3,600 middle of the crazily busy crowds for one of the most touristy yet essential experiences you’ll ever have in Tokyo. Shopping-wise, Harajuku offers both relatively cheap clothing and top-notch people watching. This is where the youths and cosplayers of Tokyo thrive and mingle, so expect plenty of over-the-top fashions that will not be seen anywhere else. If fashion is less your scene, head on over to Akihabara, an electronics district filled to the brim with the latest tech. With Japan’s reputation for coming up with the oddest and most innovative of inventions, you have your sightseeing work cut out for you here. Finally, don’t forget to take a break from the breakneck pace of city life with a visit to a Zen Japanese garden or an ancient shrine. The Imperial Palace East Garden (‘Higashi-Gyōen) is a sight to behold, and most importantly, free of charge. Temples and shrines usually don’t cost a dime either, so be sure to tack on destinations like the Tokyo Imperial Palace, Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple and Harajuku’s Meiji Jingu to your itinerary. They are richly steeped in history, and the architecture makes for stunning photography as well. Meiji Jingu even has the added advantage of the opportunity to witness a traditional wedding ceremony, which usually occurs on Sunday mornings.

Fish in Round Bowls? No, Thanks!
Thinking of housing your fishes in a bowl? Well, reconsider it as Rome deems putting goldfish in glass bowls to be a form of cruelty towards animals! In 2004, Rome became the first Italian city to ban the classic spherical fish bowls under a new law which also stops fish or other animals from being given away as competition prizes. So, apparently the reasoning is that round goldfish bowls distort the view of reality perceived by the goldfish causing it to suffer. Many fish experts believe that round bowls are actually not practical as they provide insufficient oxygen for fish which may cause them to go blind. As minor as it seems, the city council stands firm by their decision as it holds a valuable lesson for young children.
fact: The ordinance also requires owners to exercise their dogs daily. Imagine that, taking your dog for a walk is now mandatory as failure to comply could cost you a fine of $700 (RM2,532)!
‘Magic’ Goat Arrested for Armed Robbery
Yes, you read it right. Police in Nigeria were holding a goat on suscipion of attempted robbery. The poor goat was handed over by a group of vigilante men to the police and remained in custody until investigations were over. The crime that was commited? Well according to the vigilantes, while on patrol they stumbled upon several individuals who were attempting to steal a Mazda 323. However as they pursued them, one of the hoodlums escaped while the other allegedly transformed himself into a goat. Eventually, a spokesperson from the police asserted that it is infact impossible for a goat to commit a crime and that evidence have to be proven scientifically. Oh well, we just hope they release the innocent creature.
fact: Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria. In fact, many Nigerians do believe that magicians can turn themselves into goats.

MARCH 2015
Wayang Kulit Gedek is originally from Thailand and incorporates southern Thai language with a mixture of Malay. Also known as Wayang Siam.
Wayang Kulit (Malaysia) While many are familiar with what Wayang Kulit is, not many appreciate this art, and even fewer are practising it, making it a dying tradition. As we cast a spotlight on Wayang Kulit Siam (our most well-known style of Wayang Kulit), it is as equally essential that we do not miss out other styles found in the country, such as Wayang Kulit Purwo of Johor.
Forgotten Tales of

emember our favourite childhood companions from Sesame Street? From the munching Cookie Monster to Kermit The Frog, these mainstream puppet shows have continued to earn its place in Hollywood, while its genesis is slowly forgotten. Well ladies and gentlemen, long before the coming of television and movies; shadow puppetry was a prominent channel of education and entertainment. Wayang Kulit or Shadow Play, consists of puppets that are made out of leather. A light source is then put behind the puppets, projecting the shadows of the puppets unto a large translucent screen. Thanks to joints in the limbs of the puppets, the puppet master will then be able to perform various feats with the puppets, including walking, dancing, fighting, nodding and even laughing.

Mainly performed in the state of Kelantan in its very own Kelantanese-Pattani dialect of Malay, Wayang Kulit Siam is largely based on Malay oral and literary versions of the Indian epic, Ramayana. The magic behind the translucent screen is performed by a solo actor known as Tok Dalang. Besides animating the puppets with action and speech (which may goes up to 50 characters and voices!), the Tok Dalang also provides narration and commentary, leads the musical orchestra and attends to the ritual aspects of a performance.
Wayang Kulit Around the Globe Just how little do we know about Wayang Kulit? For starters, shadow play is actually popular in various cultures from Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia) to other parts of Asia such as in China, India and Nepal. It is also considered as an ancient art in the West from Turkey, Greece and France. Indonesia: Javanese Shadow Puppets are mostly based on two epic stories from India, The Mahabarata and it’s sister work, the Ramayana.
Javanese Shadow Puppet.
Chinese Shadow Puppetry.
Wayang Kulit Purwo is an imported Javanese version performed in Indonesian language in southern Malaysia, Johor.
Traditional Javanese shadow theatre have combined the Hindu stories with Buddhist and Muslim religious ideas and their own folklore. A Javanese puppeteer is seen not just an artist but also a type of priest and teacher.
Nang Yai from Thailand
Hacivat (left) and Karagöz (right).
Hacivat. While Asian shadow theatre is often concerned with religious epics, Turkish shadow puppets focus on satirical stories. Karagöz represents the illiterate but straightforward public, whereas Hacivat belongs to the educated class, speaking in a poetical and literary language. The Turkish shadow theater was later brought to Greece, where Karagöz and Hacivat became Karagiozis and Hadjiavatis and each of the characters assuming stereotypical Greek personalities. France: In the 1770s, shadow theatre became popular in France at a time when silhouette portraits were fashionable. Although called “Ombres Chinoises” (Chinese Shadows), these shows did not have colourful shadow puppets that were synonymous of Chinese shadow plays, and instead consisted of black silhouettes.
Cambodia and Thailand: The traditions of shadow puppetry of Cambodia and Thailand have very strong affinities. In Cambodia, it is called nang sbek and in Thailand, nang yai. Refugee camps along the Thai/ Cambodian border became the artistic home for shadow puppetry when it was forced to near extinction by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970’s. China: Chinese shadow puppetry dates all the way back to 2000 years ago when a favourite concubine of Emperor Wu from the Han Dynasty died of an illness. Devastated by the loss, a court magician made a cotton puppet of the concubine and painted it in order to comfort the gloomy emperor. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a rear-illuminated puppet show behind a curtain. The emperor was over the moon and took to it from then on. The story recorded in China’s official history book is believed to be the origin of shadow puppetry. Turkey and Greek: The Turkish tradition of shadow play was widespread throughout the Ottoman Empire and was called Karagöz and

Wayang Kulit Meets Star Wars
Titled ‘Peperangan Bintang’, the cast of puppets include characters inspired by those from the movies. This includes the Skywalker twins, C-3PO and Darth Vader. Not only does the show take inspiration from its characters, ‘Peperangan Bintang’ also takes inspiration from ‘Star Wars’ narrative, with the highly recognised “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” phrase being used. If you’d like to learn more about ‘Peperangan Bintang’ and the duo that have revolutionised Wayang Kulit, you can point your browser to www.facebook.com/peperanganbintan.
A Culture Not to be Forgotten The one thing that makes us unique is our heritage. Wayang Kulit is undeniably part of this heritage, which makes it something that we should not take for granted, lest it be forgotten. If you’ve never experienced Wayang Kulit before, we highly recommend you join the next performance of ‘Peperangan Bintang’.
Pak Dain, the master puppeteer behind the screen.
Aside from cultural performances in tourist centres, we don’t really get to experience wayang kulit, let alone appreciate its beauty and craftsmanship. Before this traditional intricacy fades out completely, two heroes, Tintoy Chuo and Teh Take Huat stepped in to reignite the interest of this ancient art form. The duo innovatively incorporated characters from ‘Star Wars’ with our traditional epics in order to bring audiences back into the Wayang Kulit world.

Get an old disposable bowl or container and fill it with warm water. Choose the colour of nail polish that you like, pour just a few drops into the water and let it spread out. You may also use a toothpick to swirl the colour around to give it the effect you’d like. Here comes the main part – Dip your ceramic mug straight down in the water (you’ll want to work quickly because the nail polish will dry out). You can use nail polish remover to remove any excess nail polish on the bottom and inside of the mug. Carefully pat your mug dry with a paper towel. Do not wipe it, as it will smudge the design! Now allow it to sit for at least two to three hours, or until it’s dry. You can repeat the whole procedure with additional colours if you with to be more creative. Do not hesitate to experiment with more than two colours in order to achieve your desired effect.
Tips Now you can use your selfpainted mugs to sip a hot drink, as pencil holders, or even to place them around as a decoration around the house. The best part of it all? Each of these mugs will be unique, as the patterns will never repeat. Get your favourite colours of nail polish now and unleash your creativity! 72

• Instead of pouring the nail polish paint directly from the bottle, you could also try to gently tap on the nail polish brush cap to create diverse patterns. • Be cautious when you are disposing the water, avoid pouring it down your ceramic sink or toilet bowl. Instead, pour it down the drain to avoid the paint from sticking onto any ceramic surface.
Show Me the Light: Candle Hacks Remember the glass marbles that you played with when you were a child? If you’re still keeping some of them, you could actually use them for an entirely different purpose! In this DIY project, we will guide you through the simple steps of creating an exceptional marble candle holder (which also happens to look like an expensive crystal decoration). It’s super easy to make and serves as a practical way to recycle your old CDs as well as marbles. Be prepared to be blown away by the mesmerizing effect it generates in the dark as the light shines through the marbles!

• For the first layer, we applied the marbles with super glue (or UHU glue) in order to set a firm base. • After the first layer, we switched to using hot glue gun. The glue dried almost instantaneously and the project finished up very fast!
Let’s Get Started! 1. 2.
3. 4.
5. 6. 7.
Grab an old CD or DVD as the base for the candle holder. Begin by gluing marbles in a circle on the CD, staying close to the edge (make sure you apply glue to the points of the marble that actually touch the base as well as the adjoining marble). Once you have gone full circle for the first row, allow it to set well. Now that it is firm, you can go around doing the same process for the second and third rows (make sure each marble of the second layer should sit on the gap between the two marbles of the first layer). Continue to stack the marbles until you’ve reached the desired number of layers. After you have finished, allow it to sit and dry for at least three hours. Place a tealight candle inside and enjoy!
You will be surprised with how enchanting it looks since the reflective covering of the CD will amplify the light through the marbles. Try and place all sorts of votive candles inside this holder to add a cosy atmosphere to your home, or even office.

B.G.T LAKEVIEW RESTAURANT & BAR
MARCH 2015
Fusion with a View Quite a few restaurants reside by the lake that flows along Plaza Kelana Jaya, but B.G.T. Lakeview Restaurant & Bar more than stands out with its repertoire of ItalianMalaysian fusion dishes and intimate ambience.
mashy mashy
By day, customers flock to B.G.T. for its healthy brunch and lunch sets, as well as to get away from their four-walled confines and take in some fresh air. Once evening sets in, the eatery’s appeal becomes even more apparent, as candles are lit, live music is played and the surrounding breeze wafts in. Still in a relatively infant stage, B.G.T. opened for business a little under two months ago when founder Joyce Yiap took over the lot from a bar named Sanook. She found great potential in the vast space, strategic location and lakeside view, and decided to tap into it. Thus, Born with Great Taste (B.G.T.) was born. Salmon O carrot
signature spaghetti seafood aglio olio
Eager to dig into what B.G.T. has to offer, our palates got off to a blazing start with the Signature Spaghetti Seafood Aglio Olio, which is priced at RM26. Branded as a hot favourite, this spicy dish has the Italian staple of spaghetti pasta and enough chilli to open up your appetite for more. If you’re a fan of seafood, you’ll love it too for its generous portions of prawns, clams and squid rings. Next came the Salmon O Carrot, which, when viewed from the top resembles a carrot. The imagery mirrors the wholesomeness of the dish, which comprises of a slab of grilled salmon, smatterings of raw vegetables, broccoli, carrots, and mashed potatoes. Delicious yet filling, this is one selection you can have for lunch without the unwanted side dish of guilt. You can help yourself to a plate for RM36. 74

bgt char-grilled rib eye
meat lover pizza
When we say we were well-fed, we weren’t kidding. Hot on the heels (or should we say, plates) of the Aglio Olio and Salmon O Carrot, we were treated the B.G.T. Char-grilled Rib Eye and Meat Lover Pizza. The Char-grilled Rib Eye meat was cooked medium-rare, and deserves to be savoured as slowly as possible to take in its full glory. It is accompanied by stir-fried vegetables such as carrots, capsicum and long beans, but really there’s no mistaking what the true star of the dish is. It is priced at RM39. The Meat Lover Pizza was basically a bed of comfort food, served with the right mix of crustiness and chunkiness, thanks to its baptism by wood fired oven. It is one of ten pizzas offered, and a choice we think is perfect for a chilled out Friday afternoon with friends and family. At RM31, it’s slightly pricey, but trust us, it’s worth it.
fruity crepe
broccoli booster
When it came to dessert, the arrival of the Fruity Crepe delighted us with its tempting but not overly cloying sweetness and nutritious fruit cubes. The scoop of vanilla ice cream topping the layers of crepe melted into the soft layers beneath it, inspiring more than just a few bites out of us. This juicy dessert goes for RM18. As for drinks, our thirst was quenched by a range of healthy mocktails, one of which was the eye-grabbing Broccoli Booster. The broccoli perched on the edge of the glass might cause some to hesitate, but trust us, it’s as healthy as it is delectable. The price for this new addition is TBA.

YOUR VIEW ON CURRENT ISSUES
MARCH 2015
Societal Views As humans, society has often dictated what is right and wrong, what is decent and indecent, and even what is normal and what isn’t. This month, we asked students if they think it’s necessary to conform to society, and why.
I don’t think it is necessary to conform to society, and it’s fine to follow whatever that you have passion for. Because if you always follow what other people say, you will never be truly happy. So I think it is fine to follow your heart and your instincts.
I don’t think it is required, because it is already the 21st century and people nowadays always fight for what they want in order to improve their lives. They are more likely to have successful lives and be better off than the previous generation.

At first I thought, yes. But after more careful consideration my answer is no. We are the ones that should make the decisions for ourselves. As Robert Frost states, I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.
No, because I would like to be different from others, it is really comfortable for me and I really like it.

A New form of oppression
MARCH 2015
Oppression, Evolved The New Face of Feminism?
A
s nature would have it, everything evolves, and that includes what we have come to call oppression. With origins traced back to the formation of human society, oppression is essentially described as the will of some that’s forced unto others. Perhaps one of the best examples I can provide you with is that of Adolf Hitler, who imposed his idea of a superior race. So superior was this race, that no other race was worthy to exist beside them, and that the only way to cleanse the world of these impure race was genocide – the Holocaust wherein six million Jews lost their lives. Today, oppression takes on many new forms, but unlike how earlier oppressors used force to “convince” others of the “truth”, those who oppress are using more subtle ways to do this.

Let me introduce a term some of you may have already heard of before: FEMINAZISM. No, they do not rock the Führer’s mini-stache, but they operate similarly - fit my preference or GET OFF MY PLANET. Indeed, these parasites have hooked themselves onto the feminist movement, claiming to ride alongside them in the name of equality! But what they imply is: “I AM A WOMAN AND I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT”. That isn’t feminism. From what my feminist friends previously explained to me, feminism is about both genders working towards a social equilibrium - so that women have an equal footing and have the same opportunities as a man. Sounds like a perfect cause to back up, right? It is, until feminazi logic is mixed in. To feminazis, men are the ones who are viewed as an oppressive force that suppresses
women, therefore anything he says that opposes what they want is championing patriarchal rule and in effect, sexism. Sounds too radical to be true? Here’s what a typical faminazi might sound like: Men are the reason I shave.
1 2 3 4
Don’t hold the door for me. I am a strong woman and I can take care of myself. Chivalry is dead. I don’t need a man to pay for my meals. I am capable of earning my own money and paying my own bills.
These are just some of the messages I get from them. My response:
1
2 3 4
A large amount of my female friends on Facebook have said that they enjoy how smooth their skin feels after shaving, and that it helps to somewhat reduce body odour. None said they shaved because of men. While the amount of female friends I spoke to isn’t enough to create a proper sample, they’re still opinions from real-life women. Very well, my apologies for being considerate. *lets door close on her* It’s because of No.2, that it’s dead? I only treat others to a meal because I recognise that you have been a good friend to me or you have done me a big favour or I just want to make your day. I’m not underestimating your paying ability at all.
There’s another reason why I’m sceptical about the faminazi movement. We all know that there was a campaign against rape led by FEMEN feminists, where women were invited to walk the streets naked. Any human being with a rational way of thinking will know that
the campaign is useless. They only served to feed the hungry eyes of perverts and cause unnecessary trouble for the police. Yet, they so readily lashed out at women and men providing negative comments; even the constructive criticisms and suggestions for a more effective campaign were shunned aside. My conclusion they want everyone to comply with their ways, they aren’t fighting for equality. They are kids at the toy store crying and throwing a tantrum because they cannot get what they want. Like the fallen empires, feminism, or rather feminazism, is now obsolete. I admit that feminism has done a fantastic job in raising women through the ranks of a discriminative society, and because of this, women today have equal opportunities as men and are able to do anything men can. I salute the feminists of old for this glorious change they brought about, but now is the time to employ a better method for equality to be achieved. Instead of being attentive to the problems of women, let us be attentive of the problems of everyone. Notice someone who needs help? Lend a hand. Notice someone getting bullied? Help them. Kindness should not be a rare thing. We should not be wow-ed by videos or stories of kindness that touch our hearts, only to share them around on facebook. No - we should learn to be like them and practice kindness. That is what society needs, it is the answer to social problems. All we need, is kindness. Now spread the love, not hate.
Chris Hemsworth fits the description of someone from the Aryan race, the race that Hitler believes to be superior.
Emma Watson is one of the most recognised feminists today.
Malala Yousafzai is another great female activist, and the youngest-ever to win a Nobel Prize laureate. Hitler was one of the world’s worst oppressors, who killed six million Jews.

The Winning
Smiles
Xylitol Prize-Giving Ceremony
T
he seemingly simple act of taking selfies became a lucrative endeavour with the recently held Smile With Xylitol Selfie Contest, which saw students from campuses across Malaysia put on their best smiles forward. Held at a total of 12 campuses, chewing gum brand Xylitol partnered up with Campus Plus to organise road shows, in pursuit of the most dazzling smiles. The contest required students to take a selfie with the hashtag #xylitolsmile on their Instagram pages. Once they did so, they would have to ‘Like’ the Xylitol Facebook page and register at any of the listed campus road shows. The higher the number of likes on their selfies, the higher the chances of winning. With Apple products and cash prizes at stake, this contest called on participants to really harness the powers of their front-facing cameras and photo editing apps. After months of searching, the Smile With Xylitol Selfie Contest found its top three winners in Ken Tan (who was represented by his father Tan Kong Ang), Melvin Wong and Lim Qian Ru. Ken Tan of INTI International College of Subang came in at third place and won a Xylitol product hamper, RM200 and an iPod Nano. As for the second prize winner, Melvin Wong of Nilai University, he took home an iPod Touch, RM300 and a Xylitol product hamper as well. The Grand Prize went to New Era University College’s Lim Qian Ru, who snagged herself RM500, a Xylitol product hamper and an iPad mini. Apart from them, 30 prizes were also given out to Consolation winners, who each bagged a product hamper. At the end of the day, all the winning students went home with the same smiles that made them winners in the first place.
