have always believed Mother’s Day should be everyday! Bringing up a child and helping him or her grow, is the essence of motherhood. It is a challenge in itself, as she has to go through countless hardships in the process. We celebrate Mother’s Day to remember and acknowledge the everlasting bond of love and affection between a mother and child.

Award Ceremony: PR1MA-PAM Architectural Ideas Student Competition 2015/16 Perbadanan PR1MA Malaysia and the Malaysian Institute of Architects came together to create a platform for Malaysian architecture students to showcase their talent and challenge their creativity. The competition called for ideas in designing “future quality affordable housing which include cost-efficient surroundings”. Through the eyes of the new generation, PR1MA may observe the different technical solutions to an equally accessible Malaysian real estate that is focused on bringing back the essence of community. As Dato’ Abdul Mutalib Alias, CEO of PR1MA said, “We want to let the young ones get involved in the building of our nation”. The winners who swiped the grand prizes were the undergraduate PAM students from University Sains Malaysia (PR1MA Landed Homes), post-graduate PAM students from University Malaya (PR1MA High-Density Living) and a young graduate PAM member (PR1MA Transit Oriented Development).

Tunku Abdul Rahman University College Upcoming TARCian Run 2016 Following the success of the TARCian Run that was first introduced last year by the alumni of Tuanku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), the event is back for its second year and will be held on the 17th July at TAR UC campus in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. The TARCian Alumni Association (TAA) is on a mission to make this fundraising event an annual programme that will continue to be held in the month of July. Using the theme of “Run for Unity”, this mini marathon is targeted to attract 5000 participants from the TARC staff, alumni, students and family members, to public runners interested in joining. There are a total of eight categories in which two are welcomed for public participations (Malaysian citizens only, whereas others are open specially for TARCians. Participants under the age of 18 are required to get parental consent before signing up for this event. Entrance fees inquiry and registration can be made online at www.themarathonshop.com or through TAR’s official website www. tarc.edu.my from 1st March till 17th June. 8

IMI’s (International Hotel Management Institute) Chef Anthony Caine Visits KDU Malaysia Chef Anthony Caine showcased his 22-year-honed talent to his excited students recently. His passion in creating great food transcends through his love for teaching. Hence his profession as a lecturer in IMI Sweden, partner University of KDU. Chef Caine has coloured his history by starting as a newbie just outside London on the Strand. He was trained as a MasterChef and now proudly dons his Michelin Star Badge. Abroad at the Caribbean, France, Switzerland and other parts of the world, he brought with him his reason for pairing the two professions of teaching and cooking together. Joining IMI in Sweden, Chef Caine wanted to share the kind of practices that every student should acquire to be prepared for the reality of the working environment. A major reason why IMI was appealing to him was the partnership with KDU and their alumni. He wholly supported their efforts in taking care of the student and their careers beyond their education, which fitted well with his resolutions in teaching. When asked about Malaysian cuisine, his polite feedback, “I was so surprised at the unique diet in Malaysia” when he was introduced to fish curry and rice for breakfast. Chef Caine should be applauded for braving the heat of Malaysia without discomfort. The Swiss Luncheon was directed by Chef Caine but cooked by the little chefs of KDU! Away from the stoves, he shared with them his kitchen essentials; people skills in the areas of communicating and listening in the kitchen require little chefs to arrest their ego in order to learn; to read more and apply the knowledge you attain in the kitchen to the theories in the books. Chef Caine was always a tyrant as a child. Divine intervention called for a tough teacher in school to put him in his place causing him to channel his emotions through his childhood hobby: cooking. From then on, Chef Caine was dedicated to creating a platform for young people to pave their way to a better life. His exposure to different cuisines led him to his interest in the Asian way of food, especially Thai cuisine. “Fusion but not confusion” became a genre he leaned towards in his cooking. However, if Chef Caine had not pursued his passion, his green thumb would have gotten the better of him; the quiet life that gardening brings is an inner calling, probably better chased during his later years.

According to its Campus Director, Anandakumaresh Ratnasingam, the leadership camp is one of college’s endeavours to develop the selfless leaders of tomorrow who will rise to the challenges thrown at them by imbuing its students with confidence through the breeding of soft skills such as communication, problem solving and logical reasoning skills in addition to its usual 3Ls (learning, leadership and life skills) and 5Cs (collaboration, creative thinking and problem solving, communication, creativity and innovation, cultural adaptation). VIMA Music Awards Branching Out Into the Modelling Business The VIMA (Voice International Music Awards), widely considered a benchmark by many Asian musicians as the most important and anticipated music awards in South-East Asia, is proud to announce its new addition to music awards. They will be venturing into modelling awards as well. Nutella Launches #YourNutella Campaign to Thank Malaysian Fans. Fresh off the success of #YourNutella in Singapore, the company found itself in Malaysia as part of the next leg of the global spread of the campaign that began in Europe and the Middle East. The campaign aims to get people to share their stories through the @NutellaSEA Instagram handle and the hashtag #YourNutella. Stories of what fans’ names mean to them, as well as memories of Nutella are highly welcomed. Nutella South East Asia Brand Manager Fabion Heymer remarks, “Everyone’s name is special, just like our shared memories with our fans, so we hope that our #YourNutella campaign will aptly convey our gratitude for their support.” From midApril to the end of May, participating supermarkets and hypermarkets will carry name label standees, with selected stores running promotional events for fans to get their own name labels. ove our parents. It’s such a basic concept; you would think that it’s ingrained in every child since the day they’re born. Yet surprisingly, quite a number of children nowadays struggle to show affection to their parents and cases of parents being abused at the hands of their own children are becoming more and more common. The question is, why? According to Global Times, parents are left bewildered and “shocked” when their children tell them “I love you” over the phone. Entering the teen years is always a big and often difficult transition. It’s like getting inducted into the long awaited “cool club” thus they feel the need to carry themselves in a different manner in order to seem more grown up and fit into a society notorious for critical opinions and judgmental views. Feeling the pressure of such scrutiny, children often reject PDA (public displays of affection) from their parents because it’s stereotyped as “childish” and “embarrassing”. Instead of seeking guidance from parents, problems and feelings are often kept a secret because teens often claim “they (parents) wouldn’t understand”. As a result, this can often lead to a rift between children and parents that will only grow over time. Both parties become less intimate and slowly but surely, they lose the confidence to express love with the ease they once did when they were younger and be free from those psychological “walls” we put over time. Many children end up feeling uncomfortable and forceful when showing affection to their parents while some avoid it altogether and choose to express it in different roundabout ways that do not necessarily involve “I love you” or physical love. When affection for your parents get lumped into the “awkward feelings” category, it will become hard for children to receive love as well. Attempts of affection by parents are often diluted by standoffish reactions and somewhat-cold responses from children until they decide to give up trying. Even when children truly need some TLC, they struggle to ask for it because they feel “unworthy” due to

years of giving the cold shoulder. In reality, children crave connection and attention like we crave chocolates- so yes, the need is real. After all, we humans are social beings. Yet because of this aversion to i n ti m a c y w hi c h h a s sn ow bal l e d over the years, fa m i l i e s s t r u g g l e to create that connection and the children affected are often disconnected emotionally, cynical and described as being somewhat cold. According to Taylor’s University, Lakeside Campus Head of Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) & Health Services Centre (HSC) Marian E. Arumugam, culture and belief has influenced the way many families portray love to one another. In Asia, most parents use an authoritative style of parenting which revolves around the pillars of respect for elders, reasoning, discipline and guidance. She said not to confuse authoritative parenting for a totalitarian-military type family which is void of affection and warmth. Plenty of families that use authoritative

parenting methods are warm and loving. Love manifests in different ways, whilst some show it through bear-hugs and kisses, others may show it by sweating blood and tears in order to give their family a comfortable life. However, the definition of “love” and the lines of affection may be blurred- many families claim they love each other but struggle to manifest that said love physically, especially in public. Asian parents also tend to be less empathetic towards their children- not because they don’t love them but because they want them to build emotional resilience and strength. When we reach a certain age, phrases like “Aw are you okay? Everything will be all right sayang” followed by kisses and comforting pats are replaced with the h a rd truth “Pull yourself together, don’t wallow in self-pity”- all with the intention of toughening up their children to face the brutal real world. It is moments such as these where children feel like a rug has been pulled from beneath them

and they become less and less confident in expressing or requesting for affection. The practice of inhibiting emotions and self-control lead to a collective struggle of children unable to fully express their feelings to not only their parents but friends as well. This is sad because now, there are plenty of children who say, “Yes, I do love my

parents” but w h e n yo u a s k t h e m w h y, t h ey furrow their brows and look like they’re trying to solve the Riemann hypothesis and at the end of the day they reply, “Because they’re my parents.” Or children grow up surrounded by many acquaintances but no true friends because they’ve never truly opened up to those around them.

What should you do if you feel emotionally detached from your parents?

•

Communicate! Communication is the key, so don’t be afraid to broach the topic with your parents. Sit them down and have a heart to heart conversation with them. Whether it’s over dinner or in the car, make sure you talk to them! There will always be counsellors willing to listen and give you advice. Do not be shy to approach them in fear of being judgedthey’re here to help you. Learn to tolerate and accept the rigorous demands of life. Many parents are unable to spend time with you regularly because they’re busy fighting for survival in the urban jungle but that doesn’t mean they do not care or think about you. In fact, they’re probably working so hard for you, for your education so you can live a comfortable life! So instead of condemning them as terrible and neglectful parents, support them by calling them and texting them so that they know you understand and that

you love them. Don’t let absence create a rift between you and your parents. Appeal for reassurance. It’s totally okay to request for a comforting hug and cuddle once in a while- male or female. Don’t be self-conscious in front of your friends or anyone for the matter. What’s wrong about hugging and kissing your mom in front of them? What’s wrong in giving your father a peck on the cheek before you’re off to your first class? Let me tell you- nothing! Be receptive to your parents and welcome their affection. You’re never too old for a cuddle or even a hug.

The Indirect Effect “Elder Abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person.” – WHO Elder abuse by children is one of the most under-reported subjects and is constantly overshadowed by cases of child abuse. You always see parents being painted as the inhumane criminals while the children play the victim but lately, you will find more and more domestic violence cases whereby the roles have been reversed. While it is terrible and wrong, cases of parents abusing their children is not something new and unheard of. In fact, it has become so dreadfully common till the image of a terrified and frail

child trying hard to hide from a towering drunkangry parent is horribly devastating but not abnormal to picture. However, the mental image of the roles reversed- a cowering, trembling parent and a violent child is equally perverse and unacceptable. These cases are not just limited to physical assault but verbal, psychological, financial, sexual and emotional abuse as well and the age of the abusers can be as young as 10 to 24 years old. Cases of elder abuse by children are many a time swept under the rug and go unreported because of the shame felt by the parents. According to research, abuse cases such as this are often viewed as “taboo” and the ultimate form of a dysfunctional family. Therefore, in order to protect their pride and integrity as a family to the eyes of the public, many parents choose to endure and try to handle the situation on their own. In some cases, parents choose not to report such cases for the sake of their abusers- their children. Love truly has no boundaries and despite the assault and terrorism, parents truly love their children unconditionally and are not willing to see them behind bars. Many family psychologists attribute the sense of entitlement which children possess today as one of the main factors of children assaulting their parents be it verbal or physical. Much of the abuse stems from disappointment and rage when parents deny children their desires which they view as their “right” such

as consumer goods like the latest iPhone or something as simple as money. Another popular viewpoint is that children who have grown up in abusive households or have experienced trauma are more likely to cause cases of childrenon-parent abuse. These children usually have a lot of pent up frustration and are unable to deal with their emotions well. Therefore, when triggered, they may explode into a violent rage and take it out on the people closest to them- their parents. Marian elaborated that childon-parent abuse is not a direct effect of children lacking physical affection from parents. It’s caused by the extreme- childhood abuse, grudges left unresolved, neglect which is not the absence of physical affection but love itself and family trauma experienced in the past. The phrase “they did this to me so it’s only fair that I do this to them” resonates in their minds and dampens any guilt they may feel. They are cold and stoic on the outside but deep down-

beneath all the layers and psychological walls they have erected, is a child that just wants to be loved. This is why sometimes, there is such a vast difference by what we say and what we truly feel. It is hard to forgive and forget which is why cases like these happen.

The five pillars to child development: The development of these five aspects in a child till they become a young adult is the responsibility of every parent. They can easily be remembered by the unfortunate acronym “PILES” (not the haemorrhoids kind)

found the voice, I said to myself, “Hey, I think I can really do this.” and I started looking up to a lot of grunge bands, especially bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but I always had that rock and roll vibe like Led Zeppelin and Guns N’ Roses.” The point he’s getting at is that many people who are inspired to become singers and entertainers aren’t as good as they think they are at the beginning. However, with a lot of effort and hard-work, these musicians make it big. “You’re going to suck but you can only get better. I learnt that from experience. The most important thing is to practice but don’t just practice looking at the mirror, practice in front of a live audience. That’s when you learn the most. Get judged. Even for me, when I was a solo act, I just went on for about a year or two and played at every open mic three to four days a week. I would keep playing until I got better,” he added. Naturally, this begs the age old question: does hard work beat talent? According to TMJB, there is a need for balance as one can always get better with practice and training no matter the field. He also believes that some people really push themselves and the hard work shows but talent helps a lot. “You can train yourself to sing and you can train yourself to play the guitar. It’s just about finding out what you’re good at. Talent sometimes just comes out of hard work.” “For example, I used to sing like a prepubescent 16-year-old girl. What is undeniable is that hard work and talent are both important for success. He reiterated that it depended on the effort put in. Having started out as a solo act, Maha Jeffery revealed that he enjoyed performing a lot more now as it’s fun playing with likeminded musicians. “Every one of us are pretty much a jammer where we can just go on stage and mess around and come up with brilliant stuff. It’s a lot more fun musically to play in a band,” said Maha. When asked to describe what the band means to them in five words or less, Maha, Axam and Pras provided rather interesting answers. “I get to be cool,” begins Pras. Maha then chimes in with “organised chaos.” After some thought, Axam concludes that his five words are “chance to be a rockstar”. Aside from songs, music videos and even more shows are planned for this year and TMJB will also be releasing a rather interesting project. “We’re currently working on an eight part, 20-minute ballad which will range across a variety of genres. It’s still in the process of being written and should be out within a few months.” However, despite the fact that they are constantly being asked to perform and earn a decent amount of pocket money, among other perks from these performances, they admit that they’re not ready to fully commit to it yet. “We’ve gotten a few inquiries from record labels but honestly, I don’t think we’re ready for a commitment like that. Probably when everyone’s done with their studies and puts their effort into it, maybe then – when we’ve got more material out.” For those of you who are wondering about their name change from Maha Jeffery to TMJB, wonder no more – it’s to stand for anything their fans want. “We’ve actually been over this many times and none of us can come up with anything solid or even agree on anything so we just stuck with TMJB,” they shared.

d o o h r e h Fat As an acclaimed artist and an award-winning DJ, Nick C has been around the world, either in person or through his paintings. This time, though, we focus on his work as a single parent, and how this has influenced his life and his son.

C+: What would you say your relationship with your son is like? Is it very casual, are you more like friends? Yeah, we’re more like friends. C+: Communication is very important. How do you guys communicate? We talk about anything. One of the things that I wanted him to have growing up was to be able to speak the truth. To just express whatever it is on his mind. Because when I was growing up, I couldn’t speak about a lot of things to my parents, so I had to look for other ways, like talking to my friends or go and experience these things by myself. C+: Anything you guys feel like talking about, you just discuss it? Yeah. I’m a single dad so there’s this issue of divorce, which is something that we live with. So when he was around four or five, he was like, ‘So how come you and mum got divorced?’ That was a big question. But it’s no big issue, because he knows that we love him a lot, and this precedes everything else. So other things fall into place. C+: How do you spend time together? We do everything. We hang around at home; we go for trips, we walk around in the mall, we go to the beach, islands and climb mountains… C+: Is it a juggle between work and family? Yes. It’s very much a juggle. I’m very used to it now. So it’s really a part of life right now. But when something new comes in – like when he has to change school, or I have to change studios, it gets a bit stressful for a while because we all have to adapt to a new habit, but that won’t take a long time. There’s just a lot of adjustments that need to be made. But we try to – because this is our life, so we want to make it the best we can, like the most fun time for everyone. So, after we settle into whatever we have to do and we know its set like that, then it becomes okay – just like everyday life.

C+: Do you find that you have to play two roles? As a father and a mother? Not so much, thank god. I used to have to be able to – when he was really, really young and he wasn’t seeing his mum that much because she was going through one or two years of restructuring for herself. I mean, we all go through that right? But not anymore now, because he sees his mum a lot and she will just suddenly call up – and so he has his own relationship with his mum, so I don’t have to do so much mothering. But when I have to, I have to. C+: What do you think you do differently from conventional families? I think we spend copious amounts of time together. From morning until night, he’s always around, and I have to think about ways to give myself some time to paint. So maybe one of the ways that we are different is that we use walkie-talkies. My house is upstairs, and my studio is down here, so when I really need time or when I’m doing a project that I have a deadline for or something, I say ‘Yohan, I’m going to go down, okay. Here, take the walkie-talkie.’ He’ll be like, ‘Okay dad.’ It’s a Motorola walkie-talkie which has a 2km range. So I just come down here with coffee and my work and I have the walkie-talkie. If he needs anything, he’ll call me. Also, there’s this curiosity in kids that I really like and I try to expand more on that. We go to temples. We go to Hindu temples too – and I personally go to mosques and check them out – we go to church as well… because I’m his dad and I need to teach him to do well. But I want to leave the spirituality part up to him. So all I can do is to show him very simple principles. These are the only things that I am adamant about, and the rest he can figure out for himself. We talk a lot about scientific elements too. I speak to him about physics and maths as they are very important in our life. At this point, it’s just a lot of nurturing, because he’s 11 years old. The routine, is the most important thing for him right

C+: Do you have any people in your life who you would say are role models for parenting? Well, the first would be my parents. The first thing you think of when you become a parent is ‘How did my mum and dad make it?’ How they told me about this issue, and stuff like that. I think a lot of information on how to parent can be found online, or you can read it in a book, or you can speak to friends about how they do certain things. A lot of things I think are just about wanting to do things a certain way. You have to figure out the pros and cons of why you’re doing things like this or that. When you become a parent, you need a lot of information. For me, I just go with the flow. I know, essentially, what is right and wrong, so I just go with that. It’s always a different challenge every day. I think with parenting, you just go with your gut feeling, but mind the principles. The core values that your family has, you just try your best to uphold that.

C+: What do you want kids to know about parenthood? That’s a tough one…. Make the right choice once you get into marriage. Try not to be a single parent (laughs). I think we’re all winging it. We’re making all this up as we go. There’s no right and wrong. Just have the basic, correct principles. Empower yourself with knowledge. Once you grow older, read more, and try to understand these truths about the world and how it will work for you. The end of it – it comes down to living your life as a good person, try to help people. But before you can help people, you have to help yourself, your family and friends first. One of the most anticipated group has arrived and their popularity was big even before their official debut on the 25th February. Consisting of 12 bi-national members (Chinese and Koreans), this new gems of Starship and Yuehua Entertainment starts gaining their share of attention when one member, Exy, joined a well-known rap competition on TV (Unpretty Rapstar). The members are grouped based on the group’s acronym (WJSN) that stands for wonder, joy, sweet and natural. With this many talents bundled up in one group, fans are definitely in for a delightful surprise.

Behind the questionably vague name is a group of five tantalising men rounded up by the agency that gave us Noel and BESTie -YNB entertainment. KNK or Keunakeun has the meaning of great or to be great which aligns with our prediction that 22

they be one of the rising rookie in 2016. Debuted on March with their first title album ‘Knock’, KNK is starting to carve their name with the rise of Tinkerbell, their fan club, and we’re hoping to see more of them in the coming future.

If you’re familiar with the web drama To Be Continued, you have already seen a fraction of what this group is capable of. Comprising six adept young members, Astro has been creating a buzz since their trainee years. Ranging from singing, rapping and acting to playing instruments, it seems like fans have barely scratched the surface with this multi-talented group. Debuted with an upbeat song “Hide & Seek” that tells the story of how they’re trying to bring together fans and the group, Astro does not disappoint musically and it is safe to say this group is going to sail straight to the heart of the fans in no time.

rawing influence from the expansive jazz and folk records of his father’s, the geek culture of anime and a healthy dose of hip-hop, UK-based DJ Kidkanevil has cultivated a sound that is highly unique and distinctively his, and has worked with many of the big names of techno. We managed to rope an interview with the surprisingly soft-spoken artist to get an inkling of what made his mind tick. CP: Tell us a bit about your experience with the Red Bull Music Academy. K: It’s pretty difficult to pick one thing. It’ll be like an overall experience, not my personal experience. I think the best way to explain it… I guess it’s like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory for musicians. People have become my really good friends and collaborators, like Cherry Chan from Singapore, Daisuke Tanabe and Amenta. The academy’s just like the perfect scenario for any kind of musician, you don’t have to work on anything other than making and talking about music, and that’s pretty ideal.

play in; the vibe, the energy is amazing. We used to have a similar project called Tempo Clash in London. It was me, Om Unit, Kutmah and Blue Daisy, and some of the Tempo Clash events were really memorable. And the biggest, most memorable one is probably the Kidsuke shows with my friend Daisuke. We played Sonar, and that was a big moment for me. CP: When you get musically blocked, what would you say is your release? K: I’ve never actually had writer’s block. For me it’s when I have to many projects on and it starts to feel too much like work, and then it’ll move slower than it would otherwise. So I’ll usually move to something that I have the mood to work on, or go to a cinema.

CP: How did you come up with the name Kidkanevil? K: Well, when I was a little kid I used to draw these little characters and I used to call them Kanevils. I think when I was a kid I thought it meant something like, mischievous or something like that. But actually it didn’t mean anything. So it kinda stuck with me and I used it.

CP: If you would collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be? K: I’m not too sure, off the top of my head, I’m a big Sufjan Stevens fan. As for dead people, I’m not sure, it’s typical, sometimes you think you’re gonna say your favourite producer, like Dilla or something, but I don’t want to mess with a Dilla beat. “They’re perfect, d’you know what I mean?” So, collaboration’s kind of a funny thing. It’s not necessarily just “who’s your favourite artist”, y’know?

CP: Which has been your favourite venue to play at so far? K: A few friends of mine, DJ Illum Sphere and Johnny Deep, have a place in Manchester called Hoya:Hoya, and that’s one of the best places to

CP: Of all the collaborations you’ve done so far, which would you say is your favourite? K: I’m most proud of my Kidsuke album that I did with Japanese producer Daisuki Tanabe.

That’s my best collaborative experience. Also, I did a song for a singer called Amenta, she’s my favourite singer. We did a track together called “Stormy Weather”. CP: What is the favourite track that you have worked on? K: I think I mentioned earlier a singer called Amenta? She and a pianist friend of mine called Gillian Wood, wrote a track together. It was really easy to do, it felt really natural, and it came out in just a couple takes. That’s the one that I really enjoyed working on. On my flight back from Tokyo, I made a beat called “One for Tokyo” and I was super excited and happy. Having just seen Tokyo, that beat captured a little moment for me.

Having released their last studio album in 2011, Us and the Night, the band’s sixth studio album, marks their longest gap between albums. The album starts off on high energy with youth anthem ‘The Broken’ before going to hit single ‘In The Dark’, which peaked at number two on Billboard’s US Mainstream Rock chart. Tracks to look out for include ‘Still Alive’, ‘Living In Your Hell’, ‘Pieces Of Me’, and title track ‘Us And the Night’.

Chill is one word that comes to mind when one puts on this debut studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Matt Corby. Having immersed himself in the various aspects of recording an album after burying his original debut album which was recorded 2 years ago, we must say that his hard work certainly has paid off. earing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.” Let me start off by saying I really wanted to love this movie- I wanted to come out of the cinema feeling as awed and goose-bumpy as I did when I saw Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. Unfortunately, I came down from that cloud real quickly- like before I even reached the halfway mark of the show. Let me start by mentioning the good notes of this two and a half hour movie *cough*JusticeLeagueTeaser*cough*. I’ll admit I was extremely sceptical when I heard Ben Affleck would play Batman- in my head, I was already mourning the loss of watching Christian Bale slaying it in the Batsuit. But I have to hand it to Affleck, he nailed his role and gave us an older, grittier, moodier (yep, it’s possible) and angst ridden Batman-Bruce Wayne which I really enjoyed watching. Kudos to Jeremy Irons as well for bringing a humorous Alfred to the table despite him looking and sounding more like a suave CEO than a butler. I also loved every second Gal Gadot stepped on screenwhich was not a lot(enough). Personally, I felt she was the only character that stayed true to the essence of the word “hero”and I loved that she didn’t get relegated as one of the love interests but instead trumps Batman on several occasions. She might as well have stolen the limelight from both Batman and Superman with her lasso of truth and badass Amazonian fighting skills. “

Lastly, I did get some kick out of seeing Darkseid foreshadowed in Batman’s “nightmare” and Aquaman, Cyborg and Flash’s cameos – all of them readily packaged in a designated file with a logo and name courtesy of Lex Luthor. Okay, now with the bad bits, let’s remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinions so here goes mine. What a shame, what a mess- that would be my first reaction to anyone who asks me how I felt about the show. There were too many story arcs to keep track of- Batman’s resentment and fear, Superman facing the heat from the senate and the world, Lex Luthor and his evil schemes and Lois Lane’s sleuthing activities. All these subplots did not tie well together, if at all, thus making it a bumpy transition from one scene to the next. It was a mess. Because of this hodgepodge of plots, the screen time for each character was limited. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters on a deep level- I didn’t empathise Superman’s internal turmoil, I didn’t get dragged down into Batman’s angst and let’s just forget about connecting with Lex Luthor on any level. For anyone who doesn’t know the DC comic world well, the characters would have felt hastily slapped together rather than carefully carved out. One of my biggest issues with Superman V Batman was Lex Luthor or more specifically, Jesse Eisenberg’s interpretation of him. For those of you who don’t read DC comics, I took the liberty to Google a quick character profile of Lex Luthor- the words that cropped up were “highly intelligent”, “devious”, “righteous”, “cocky”, “strategic” and almost always seen in a sharp suit and tie. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not the villain we were given in the movie, instead of a cunning and witty foe, we were presented with a spasmodic, predictable, over-the-top-annoying and lack-

lustre Heath Ledger Joker wannabe with daddy issues and all. I felt cheated and bored to death, watching this supposed genius strategist set up the stage for Batman to battle it out with Superman only to hatch up Doomsday from his embryonic sac to do the dirty work in the end which leads me to ask- was the last two hours of painstaking plotting, manipulation and kidnapping of Martha all for nothing? At the end of the day I couldn’t fear him, relate to him or even take him seriously so what gives? Let’s not even mention the fact that his Lex Luthor’s sharp suits are replaced with awful evil geek style clothing (oops I did mention it). Now- the long awaited Batman vs. Superman fight- the freaking title of the movie which has garnered so much publicity and attention from DC fans and non-fans alike- the age old battle of brain against brawn finally answered! No it wasn’t.

It was underwhelming and short. The reason itself for this fight is so convoluted- it could be chalked up to a misunderstanding which would have been easily solved by a 10 minute talk between two civilized, intelligent beings of the 21st century but no- men had to be men by letting their fists do the talking in an un-epic battle of kryptonite gas bombs and toilet sinks (I kid you not). At the end of the day, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was a movie with a great cast, wonderfully ripped abs (courtesy of shirtless Cavill and Affleck’s crossfit session), awesome soundtrack and cinematography and heavy themes that had so much potential but couldn’t be supported by its flimsy plot structure thus it crashed just like my high hopes.

Nuraini Mohd Noor, or better known as Tuti, became a household name when she was the first person of Malay ethnicity to qualify for Asiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Next Top Model (AsNTM). Edgy but friendly at the same time, Tuti proves that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be girly in order to be a model.

Tell us about your experience with AsNTM. I like how we get to meet amazing people (I can’t tell you who) especially people from the fashion industry. After the makeover episode all of us felt that the competition was getting harder because some of the girls went from long hair to really short hair so features such as strong cheekbones become prominent. I really think that the competition is not that easy and it gets tougher every day.

If you had to rate yourself as a model on a scale of 1 to 10, what would it be and why? Seven, as I don’t really perform that well sometimes. If I had to be a very girlish model, I wouldn’t be able to do that and commercially I’m not into that. I’m specific to one look and I think I have to be more versatile in order to get a rating of 10.

You’re currently signed to an agency in Jakarta. Why did you decide to sign there as opposed to with an agency here? As a local model, I prefer to freelance because when you sign up with an agency here, they take a cut of around 30% from your pay. I’ve always loved Indonesia because of the fashion scene and the fashion people. They’re very daring and they take risks.

Who are your favourite designers / brands? Locally, I love Alia Bastamam and Joe Chia. Internationally, it’s got to be Givenchy.

Is modelling something you’ve always wanted to do since you were a child or did it just sort of happen? It just sort of happened. My mum actually always wanted me to be a teacher but I knew that wasn’t for me. I didn’t really know anything about modelling at first. When I began my studies at UiTM, I got scouted out by a senior of mine and I decided to give a shot. We started out with a test shoot and from there I got a call from a designer to book me for jobs and shows.

Who is your role model that you aspire to be like some day? Tengku Azura. She used to be a Malaysian supermodel but she’s settled down now. She’s always my reference when I need to check up on modelling and she’s one of the best Malaysian models. She used to be an in-house model for Dior and she was based in New York. She got what she wanted and now she’s settled down with kids. It’s just a happy story.

What is your message to youth who want to model, specifically in Malaysia? Know what it takes to be a model. Don’t just self-proclaim that you’re a model but you’re not seen on any runways or ad campaigns because it’s not easy to be a model. You need to have certain requirements like the height, the features, or maybe you even have a weird yet exotic look. For me, if you have what it takes then refer to someone and ask for approval.

What are the most challenging aspects of modelling? To know how to sell what you’re wearing and being on time – that’s the most important thing as a model. You have to always improve on your catwalk and know how to communicate with photographers and stylists. No matter what, do not complain. It’s not part of your job to complain. You’re a model.

If you were not a model, what would you be working as? A librarian. I studied library science in UiTM and I didn’t really get to choose my course.

You’ve had your fair share of those who would rather judge you as opposed to giving you constructive criticism. what would you like to say to these people? Are these people actually relevant? They’re not worth my time.

They say that modelling is one of the few professions whereby men earn significantly less than women. Why do you think this is? Because women are more fabulous and we get a lot of jobs. There are limited jobs for men, evident when you look at men’s magazines.

Certain countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and Israel have passed laws with regards to excessively thin models. Being a size zero, what do you think of these kind of laws? I think it’s a good thing so that models can be healthy. Before this, I’ve met a lot of models who don’t eat – they just drink. It’s quite scary to see how models take care of their health and their diets. Even as a model, you have to eat. If you eat too much, just go to the gym and work out.

Teenage girls tend to be conscious about their bodies. What would you say is important to remember at that age? Learn your body. Once you know your body, you’ll know what suits you. The opinions of others actually don’t matter. If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing, then why do you even care? Learn to dress for your body type.

How would you describe your ideal life partner? Someone who can just play along with me and how I am – someone who isn’t too uptight.

magine, if you will, the vast expanse of the cosmos. The infinite darkness of the void, illuminated by fiery ball of gas that is the sun and the bright, fiery glow of stars that, when viewed from the surface of our earth, seemed no more than a playful little twinkle. Planets of varying colours and sizes, even the smallest is bigger than anything you’ve ever seen; cloud-like nebulae that resemble bigger, more dramatic versions of the Aurora Borealis; and even the occasional comet, blazing by with a long, fiery tail. Now, imagine sitting in the middle of it all, drinking in every single detail as if it were happening right in front of you. All without the slightest danger of asphyxiation or being barbequed by the sun. With the age of modernised, personalised Virtual Reality (VR) dawning upon us, pioneered by brands like Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, such an experience can finally be witnessed in the comforts of our very own homes. Not to be confused with Augmented Reality (e.g. Google Glass), which super imposes virtual elements onto a real world, VR is capable of ‘tricking’ our brains into perceiving a reality entirely different from the one we are actually in. When one wears a VR headset, there are two screens that play slightly different versions of the same image in order to simulate depth perception. This is similar to how 3D glasses have allowed you to marvel at the marvellous landscapes of Pandora from the movie Avatar by blocking a part of the image meant only for the other eye. In a society of media escapism and everexpanding TV and mobile screens, personal VR is a dream come true for many moviegoers and gamers, allowing them to literally see the action and excitement happen right before them rather than from behind a glass barrier, giving the viewer a whole new way to interact with the media, adding a whole new element to the experience of playing video games and watching movies or TV. Other products that further improve the virtual immersion through the incorporation of the sense of touch and movement into simulations and video games have also begun to pop up, such as the Virtuix Omni, Manus VR, and the GloveOne, allowing one to touch, feel and hold objects while moving around

with your own two feet. This further adds an entirely new dimension to the VR experience; letting one literally jog across the plains of Skyrim while swinging a sword, or run through maze-like rooms of Aperture Laboratories wielding a portal gun. This will not only help with the immersion of the game/simulation, but will also help with one’s health, as gamers will no longer be sitting still for their five hour-straight play through. Soon, people may even be spending vacations in virtual Bali, or even have romantic dinners in the restaurants of virtual France. Outside of entertainment, the potential of VR is also virtually limitless in other sectors like education, healthcare, military training, engineering and science. As visualisation is a helpful tool for many people, the benefits of simulations are overwhelming. It is possible to train someone to fly a plane without the risk of crashing; or even to learn and explore the human body by travelling through blood veins and arteries, eliminating the use of cadavers. While VR tech may not be a brand-new phenomenon, but the fact that it will soon be available for public use will change the way we view things forever.

Keep the peel and rub it over your teeth then rinse with water. Lemon and baking soda help to lock the calcium into the teeth to strengthen and whiten the teeth. Be very sure not to brush your teeth immediately after applying or consuming lemon. Your teeth are fragile after the treatment. Lemon oil is recommended because the extract reduces amount of acidity.

How to: Add 1 cup of firmly packed rose petals to two boiled cups of distilled water. Cover and let steep for 30 minutes. Use cotton gauze to strain and a funnel to bottle the rose water.

A Good Thai me To Explore Kanchanaburi Edition

History is buried deep in the soil of Kanchanaburi â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something which has helped the town blossom into an essential destination for history buffs. On the second leg of our trip to Thailand, courtesy of the kind folks at Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), we delved deep into the shocking past of this now idyllic town, and emerged in awe of its resilience in the face of adversity.

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

This is the main war cemetery in the town, established as a resting place for the nearly 7,000 soldiers buried here. These soldiers were prisoners of war, or POWs for short, who were captured by the Japanese army and forced to help construct the Burma-Siam Railway, which is more infamously known as the Death Railway. Here lies a combination of British, Dutch and Australian soldiers, most of whom are British. The cemetery lies not too far away from the site of the former â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Kanburiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, a base camp for POWs who passed by it on their way to other camps.

Hellfire Pass Memorial

A historical site that was built as a nod to the brutality that occurred during the construction of the Death Railway, it begins with a museum, where visitors get a crash course on the backstory of the area and take a journey back in time with anecdotes by survivors. After that comes the meatiest segment of your tour as you travel down the trail that leads you to the original rail bed. Here is where you see the actual Hellfire Pass, the railway cutting which was created solely using manual labour. It gets its name from the final, and most intense period of construction where the workers were reduced to gaunt skeletons as they worked 16 to 18 hours a day. As the torches held by their Japanese guards cast a chilling glow on their emaciated faces, the situation was said to resemble a scene from hell. The area in daylight looks strangely beautiful, with barren trees and leaves-strewn grounds being a regular feature here. However, the remnants of the unfinished rail bed serve as an instant, jolting reminder of the horrors that took place.

Bridge Over the River Kwai/Death Railway

Immortalised by the Hollywood war epic ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’, the real life bridge is arguably one of Kanchanaburi’s biggest attractions. It marks the start of the Death Railway, and spans the length of the Kwai Yai River. Despite the tragedy that occurred during its construction, it is quite a sight for sore eyes today with the surrounding mountains and valleys. Tourists may also take a boat ride below for a leisurely tour of the area, or view the place from a more sprawling angle on the track itself, as it has been converted into a walkway with side platforms. As for the railway, this is where visitors can board the train for a scenic two-hour journey from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok. For the best views, one is advised to sit on the left hand side on the way to Nam Tok, and on the right hand side when coming back. Over time, the bridge, and the railway by extension, has evolved into a symbol of peace, serving as a solemn testament to the losses of war.

1. Have at least two tailored suits in navy & black, as these will have you covered for almost any occasion from work to weddings.

escue group Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) recently held an adoption drive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something the group does frequently, in various locations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as part of their ongoing effort to find new homes for stray, abandoned, and abused dogs that find their way into the care of the rescue group. The group, founded in 2008 by Ms. Wani Muthiah is adamant about their refusal to operate a shelter for animals, as it means that they would only be able to take in animals and look after them. As a rescue group, the volunteers respond to cases that are brought to their attention, see to any medical issues and then re-home the dogs as soon as they are able to. Their blog and Facebook page shine a light on some major cases of human abuse that MDDB has encountered, and also chronicled (sometimes not so) happy endings. Meet Happy. She was found by a resident of Skudai, Johor on the 27th of December 2013 who contacted MDDB, who then immediately posted about the dog on their Facebook page to alert nearby community volunteers. When found, her face was disfigured, and there were countless maggots covering the surface of what used to be her snout. A volunteer responded promptly, and admitted the dog at a vet in Johor who administered morphine to help with the pain it was experiencing.

In two days, she was moved to Petaling Jaya, where surgery removed the facial mass and dead skin surrounding the wound, along with the maggots that had been eating its flesh. Her facial bone structure remained unharmed, so it is still able to eat and drink without difficulty. While this story started out bleakly, it has an uplifting ending. Happy was named so because of her upbeat and, well, happy personality, which persevered despite her painful past. She is currently the public relations executive for MDDB, and is also featured in their 2016 calendar.

Happy’s story was among a large handful of successes for MDDB. Many of their dogs get adopted, but not all cases end well. This, in particular is an incident that happened in February 2016. This dog was found injured and lying around the Pandamaran wet market in Klang. Many visitors and stall operators chose to chase it away instead of attempting to help it. Due to its condition, it was unable to travel very far, and so would end up in the same spot where it would lie, wailing and howling in pain. It was not until a kindly lady spotted it, and got in touch with MDDB. A volunteer came forward to offer to take the dog to the vet’s, but as the dog was transferred into the carrier, it passed away. It was observed by the volunteer that the wound was deep and had a terrible maggot infestation. MDDB has been forced to look after rescued dogs that are not deemed adoptable and are unable to be released as part of their advocated trap-neuter-release-manage (TNRM) programme. As such, the group are required to put aside a percentage of the money that they receive from donations and

What can you do to help? A lot of the time, we think that reaching out to help causes such as that of the animals being rescued by MDDB requires a significant sacrifice of some sort on our part. This is not the case. All non-profit animal welfare organisations welcome various types of contribution, depending on the resources available to you, and how much commitment you want to put in. If you do not have time, but are willing to spare RM10 per month on your credit card, you could sign up for SPCA’s credit card donation campaign. Should you be willing to go a step further, you could sponsor a dog in MDDB’s TNRM programme for RM60 a month.

We are given sharp, punchy and vivid colours with the phone’s Super HD AMOLED display which makes web browsing, reading, watching movies or any media handling operations a much more enjoyable experience on Samsung A7(2016)’s 5.5 inch screen.

The Samsung A7(2016) is equipped with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera- both has an aperture of f/1.9. The photo quality is above average but in the midrange Smartphone market which is getting increasingly competitive, many would find the A7(2016)’s photo quality sub-par. Photos in lowlighting conditions are slightly washed out and noisy but in daylight; the photo quality is great. The HDR capability on this phone however is able to counter the washed out look of photos in low lighting. If you’re an avid videographer, you’ll be disappointed to find out that there is no 4K recording capabilities available. When using the front facing camera, the A7(2016) gave some pretty cool beauty adjustments which fortunately (or unfortunately) do not make your photo look fake or cartoon-ish.

Performance This is where it gets a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, the Samsung A7 (2016)’s software did not run on Android’s new 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box but on the 5.1.1 Lollipop instead. However, it performs reasonably well and could handle multiple apps running with minimal lag and stutters. The fingerprint sensor is a bit weak as it failed to register my fingerprint multiple times and in the end, it felt more of a farce than a “quick and easy” way to access my phone. The A7(2016) also does not come with a gyro sensor making 360 videos a no show and somewhat crippling the GPS orientation accuracy (but only slightly). The phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Exynos 7580 Octa and an Octa-core CPU. 54

he blame g a m e continues as the controversial issue of racism is getting way beyond our control and no one is taking a firm stand in ending this absurdly ongoing topic because let’s face it, it’s killing us. We can’t wait for another Malala Yousafzai to shine the light on such important yet disregarded matter. Transracial parents are one of the victims taking the bullets out of the blossoming hatred we have for each other - and this simply has to stop. As if parenthood isn’t tears inducing enough, the added pressure of becoming parents to a child of different race in this judgmental world might be unbearable for some if not all. Much like its name, transracial parenting is taking the responsibility of being deliberate parents to child with race that is different from them, often through adoptions. This noble act is becoming a du jour amongst hopeful parents unable to have their own life’s miracle.

TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH It’s a tough job. So why take the chance to begin with? One of the famous transracial parents are the Jolie-Pitt pair who adopted four out six of their children from different parts of the world. In an interview, Jolie said that she had a feeling her son was somewhere in the country, Cambodia, during her visit as goodwill ambassador. Other celebrities such as Katherine Heigl and Sandra Bullock followed suit when both welcomed a new family member through transracial adoption. Connie Wong, a kindergarten teacher who is also a Buddhist, adopted six Muslim children out of social obligations and the goodness of her heart. Raising a culturally proficient kids can be challenging as there is no one guide to help you through it. A lot of people do not consider the parenting aspect when applying for interracial adoption. They are more concerned on getting a baby. Nevertheless, nobody can argue that it takes a lot of courage to welcome someone that is culturally different from who we are.

TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS Being a transracial parent is a lifelong commitment that requires one to fully

dedicate themselves in preserving the child’s heritage while introducing their own. They can’t run from the feeling of being helpless given the fact that a child’s fate is in their hands and how they mold them will make all the difference. That is a heavy burden to put on someone’s shoulder especially when they are still trying to figure out the architecture of their new life. The adopted child does not have the chance to learn of their birth culture through everyday life as any normal family. Inter-racial families will also have to get used to being a stand out in the crowd and handling harsh criticisms coming their way. Furthermore, the child might struggle with identity crisis as they get older and parents will have to be ready to answer questions that might get them off guard. Many agree that no books can truly help in overcoming the trials but experience, patience and a little help from the people around them is a step to making it right.

The Other Side of the Coin Having a child itself can bring endless joy to life but one might argue raising a child with different heritage can add more colour to it. A single approach won’t be enough to create harmonisation within inter-racial family and this will drive parents to be creative by forcing them out of their comfort zone. By seeing the world with wider perspective, they view

every thi ng wi th more clarity. A child raised in this environment will have lesser concern over adoption insecurities since they will be aware of it at a much younger age and if taught right, they can be unique individuals with vast mind.

Tips for Parents The only thing to do is to make the best out of everything and consider each challenge a blessing since not many have the opportunity of uniting culturally different people under one roof. Communication is the key. Create environment that allow the child to feel safe in sharing their feelings and thoughts with family members. Once a strong foundation is established, it will be much easier to overcome difficulties when bridging the cultural gap. Another point that needs to be emphasised is the significance of instilling racial pride in the child to avoid self-hatred and confusion in figuring out who they are. Additionally, befriend people with the same race as your child so that they are not totally cut off from their community and they have a role model to refer to when a culture-related questions arise. One extra tip is to personalise family traditions to ensure constant stability. However, at the end of day the first step is to educate yourself before making this decision.

Jeremy Meeks stole the heart of many-awoman by his dashing good looks. Dubbed by the police as “one of the most violent criminals in the Stockton area”, Meeks was released from prison this year and already has a modelling agent. Yes, he’s that sexy. Jim Jordan of White Cross management says Meeks already has a multitude of offers to kickstart his career— even for movies. Some of the many titles this hunk has earned includes “Prison Bae”, “Mugshot McDreamy” and “Sexy Felon”. We’re just throwing in another one to the bank. Let’s just hope he turns a new leaf from now on or the Meek’s internet supporters would be in a very awkward situation.

Mailing is a dying art form. The suspense of a long-awaited mail or the surprise of receiving a mail without the bill falling out the envelope are communication ecstasies long lost. Once in a while, however, the curiosity rekindles and a dad may randomly send his son a mail, like in the case of Reddit user blooper2112. He received a chunky package mail addressed to him and oh, did his excitement peak! When he opened it, he found a letter from his dad, a few dollars and…an axe? Apparently his dad was curious to find out if he could send an axe through the mail. So for those curious of what the land of the rising sun looks like 50 years ago, do check it out in Showa Monogatari!

Good looking, popular and humourous. As a teenage boy, Kippei has everything going for him and life never felt so easy. Drown in self-love, the irresponsible playboy finds himself caught in between making lunchboxes and tending to his niece who was abandoned by her mum. This manga based anime has been the talk of the town in the anime community. Many expected the anime to be a classic food for moppets but anime creators are famous for throwing us off the cliff when it comes to expectation. Instead, Aishiteruze Baby turned out to be a heartfelt shoujo drama that tackles some of the world’s silently kept issues in a light hearted manner. On lazy weekends, plop on the couch with your family and turn on this anime. Who knows, you might learn a thing or two from these characters. You’ll laugh and then cry; or probably both at the same time. It sounds pretty promising to me.

4. TOKYO GODFATHERS (MOVIE) From the creation of the late Satoshi Kon who was a respected animator and manga artist in the scene, comes a touching story of Tokyo Godfathers. Famous for his admirable understanding of humanity, the characters portrayal in this one and half hour movie was done brilliantly. This story took place during the most exciting holiday of the year; Christmas. Three homeless misfits are lost in the face of another life’s challenge when they found an abandoned baby. Along the journey of searching for the baby’s parents, these characters will discover more about life and most importantly, about who they are individually. If you need to get away from the action, fantasy or romance genre anime and find one to clean your soul for one day, this one fit the bill.

I think I would start planning to be a parent after I’m financially stable, have a good job, and think that I can afford a child, be it before or after marriage. Because to me it’s not something that’s really important; becoming married is not something that makes you ready.

The event was spiced up with Q&A sessions by the bubbly emcee.
