Takato Castle Ruins Park & Narai Historical Post Town • Saturday, April 13 Our first destination is Takato Castle Ruins Park. It is unknown when Takato Castle was originally constructed. However, the castle was taken over by Shingen Takeda who was the feudal lord of the Kai Province in 1545. The castle ruins are now one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. The cherry blossom festival is held in April every year. Enjoy spending the beautifulspring time at the park by trying Nagano’s tasty local food vendors and viewing over 1,500 beautiful “kohigan-zakura’ cherry blossom trees. Our next destination is Naraijuku. It has been designated as a preservation district for a group of historical buildings since 1978. This area used to be an important connecting highway between Edo(Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo Period. Two of the former residences are open to the public as a museum and others as the Japanese style B&Bs called “Minshuku,” restaurants and souvenir shops. Explore the ancient street lined with Edo style buildings while you wander around the shops and restaurants finding fine crafts, lacquerwares, and food that meet your tastes.
Spring is now upon us, when it’s warm enough to play and be adventurous! Come stop by Outdoor Recreation & Leisure Tours, We have new items and tours you might want to check out!

April is designated by the Defense Department as the Month of the Military Child, to highlight the “contributions, courage and patriotism of the military community’s youngest members.” This month-long observation was first established in 1986 by then Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in recognition of U.S. military children ranging in age from infants to 18 years old; children who face many challenges associated with permanent change of stations, deployments and training activities. These and more, are among some facets of military life presenting unique challenges to children who must constantly adjust to distance, unfamiliarity and uncertain schedules. April is a special time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide; but more so, to highlight the myriad experiences of children of military members serving at home and overseas.
Military Children by the numbers • There are 700 military child development program facilities around the world, running approximately 155,000 child-care spaces, with another 3,000 Family Child Care homes provided. • Military child development centers welcome around 200,000 children daily, there are 300 youth and teen centers worldwide serving more than 645,000 youth through a variety of educational and recreational programs. • Approximately 2 million military children have experienced a parental deployment since 9/11. • There are currently 1.2 million military children of active duty members worldwide. • The average military family moves three times more often than their civilian counterpart. • There are nearly 2,000,000 total-force dependent children: 900,000+ (Army), 400,000 (Air Force), nearly 300,000 (Navy), and approx. 118,000 Marine dependents. 21

EVER BEEN TO KURE HARBOR? Camp Kure (Akizuki) Recreation/Lodging
During WWII, the Kure Naval District was Japan’s single largest naval base and arsenal, housing most of the city’s industry and workforce employed in the service of naval installations, munitions factories and other support functions. It is this strategic significance that drew a heavy and sustained Allied bombardment culminating in the Bombing of Kure in June and July 1945. Today, Kure continues to be a major maritime center hosting the dockyards of numerous shore based facilities of the JMSDF, gaining fame as a tourism center featuring artifacts and mementos from the JMSDF museum of naval history. Come and visit Camp Kure and immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Kure Harbor. Our facilities offer dining & bar services, a package store, gym, commissary, clean and convenient lodging at affordable rates.
