U.S. Army in Japan • Camp Zama
2017 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), and their partners in United States Army Garrison Japan (USAG-J), United States Army Japan (USARJ) and the Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces (JGSDF) are ramping up preparations for one of the largest, most popular festivals in Japan--Bon Odori! Bon Odori or Bon Dance was originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead. At O-bon festivals around the country, bon-odori typically takes place in parks or plazas in which dancers circle a yagura, a raised platform where musicians play taiko drums and folk music known as Ondo. Today, this custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places to visit and clean graves in anticipation of their ancestors’ return to household altars. The festival is accompanied by celebratory dance, music, rides, games, and delicious summer festival food. Mark your calendars, gather your friends and family members and join us on August 5, 2017 at the Camp Zama, 2017 Bon Odori Festival!

The “Gridiron Challenge” is a popular Camp Zama Community Club program currently in its 10th straight year! A very high percentage of the military community are “Fans of the NFL” and this challenge will provide all football fans the opportunity to show their knowledge of the game by picking the weekly game winners.
There is no cost to play the “Gridiron Challenge.” There are several parts to the Challenge-- here is some information you should know.
1) 17 WEEKS – REGULAR SEASON
For 17 weeks, from September 1 to December 31, 2017, you can pick up an entry form every Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Game Time Sports Bar showcasing the games scheduled for the forthcoming week. Entry forms must be turned in before 7 p.m. to the staff at the CZCC. When you receive your first entry form you will receive information explaining the “tie-breaker” Only one entry per week. Each weekly winner will receive a prize with a value in excess of $175. A photo will be taken of all winners and displayed in the CZCC. All weekly winners names (17) will be placed in a drawing and the winner will receive VIP seating and a steak breakfast for him / her and 9 friends at Zama’s Super Bowl Party on February 5, 2018.
4) “COLLEGE GAMES CHALLENGE”
Each week we will select 15 games from the NCAA Football Schedule. Select the teams that you think will win and the person with the most wins during that week will receive a prize. The total wins that each participant picks each week will be kept on file at the CZCC. This sheet will be available for all to view on the Gridiron Challenge Board. The Top 2 players with the most wins at the end of the season will receive a prize of $100 (1st Place) and $50 (2nd Place).
5) “COLLEGE BOWL CHALLENGE”
2) CUMULATIVE PRIZE
The total wins that each participant picks each week will be kept on file at the CZCC. This sheet will be available for all to view on the Gridiron Challenge Board. The Top 3 players with the most wins after week 17 will receive a prize of $200 (1st Place), $100 (2nd Place) and $50 (3rd Place).
3) PLAYOFF CONTEST
Play-Off Games: Once the playoff teams are determined you must pick which teams will win each game. The format will be the same as during the regular season. Any wins from the regular season do not count in the playoff contest. The conference playoff games are the last games for the playoff challenge. The person with the most wins during the playoffs will receive a $100.00 prize.
There are two parts to the Play-off Contest. Play-Off Picks: On Week 14 pick the 12 teams that you think will make the playoffs. Once the playoff teams are determined the participant with the correct teams will win $100.00. There will be a tie-breaker for the Play-off Picks also.
Once the Bowl bids are determined you will select which teams will win their respective Bowl Game. 24 College Bowl games will be included in this Challenge. The player who has the most wins after the National Championship Bowl game in January 2018 will receive a prize of $100. The National Championship Game will be the tie-breaker for this challenge. The winner will receive his / her prizes in the Sports Bar each Thursday at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the “GRIDIRON CHALLENGE.” Special evening door prizes will be given out periodically and all in attendance are eligible. All sheets for the upcoming week’s games must be received by 7 p.m. to be eligible for the weekly prizes.

Tip of the Month
You may have heard to keep your eyes over the ball when putting, but how do you do this and how do you check it? Keeping your eyes directly over the ball can help you see the line better and get your ball starting on line, but it is a posture that can put more stress on your lower back and that is why most people don’t actually do it correctly. Stand tall and whilst keeping your back straight and chin up, bend at least 30 degrees from the hips, although it should feel like 60 degrees. Your knees should remain locked. Make sure you don’t bend from the neck or shoulders. Then, let your arms hang loosely in front of you. Your hands should be somewhere over your toes and you may notice that at this time that your club feels a bit too long and that your weight is on your toes. Let it be that way. Now unlock your knees and find your balance by gently rocking back and forth. Your eyes should now be over the ball and you can check this by dropping a ball from between your eyes, which should then fall directly on the ball or on the target line.

Our next stop is the 3 meter high and 70 meter wide Shiraito Waterfall in Nagano Prefecture. Our last destination is Kusatsu Onsen. In the center of Kusatsu town is Yubatake, the largest hot spring supplying the Kusatsu Onsen, with cascading gushes of spring water as much as 4,000 liters per minute.
Shirahama White Sand Beach

Marine Activity at Futoh Futoh, located on the Westside of the Izu Peninsula, is a famous diving & snorkeling spot, known for its clear water and abundant ocean life. Bring a bathing suit and your favorite marine gear to enjoy snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboard (SUP).
Fuji Fire Festival The pleasant town of Yoshida, located in the Fuji Five Lakes, proudly hosts the annual Fuji Fire Festival, which marks the end of Mt. Fuji’s 2-month climbing season. The festivities begin at Sengen Shrine, where locals perform traditional fire dances and light giant “taimatsu” (cone shaped towers) that burn throughout the area. Shortly after lighting them, the streets are ablaze and the temperature rises! Many booths sell souvenirs, food and drinks throughout the festival area.

A Day in Kamikochi My Outdoor Recreation Experience
It’s 3 a.m. in the morning and I’m more asleep than awake….. who gets up this early anyway? An avid hitchhiker and outdoors enthusiast, that’s who! So although it’s pitch black outside with dimly lit streets lighting our way north, there’s excitement, a sense of anticipation that today’s adventurers are looking forward to. Five hours had passed and we finally arrived at our destination greeted by the morning cold, a welcome feeling given that it’s much less humid at such a high elevation. Our guide for today’s ODR adventure, Nobue Kobayashi, gave us a quick rundown on what to expect, encouraging us to use the bathroom now as the next few we encounter will require payment. As everyone finished getting ready, we walked 100 feet or so into an opening right on the river. Immediately, a magnificent, clear view of a mountain pass materializes into view from out under the tree line we walked through. I feel the cold, dry air whipping against my light-hoodie, with the sun still slowly rising behind us, and I think to myself, “This cannot be Japan. This feels like a U.S. National park!” Everyone is getting their cameras out to take pictures of the beautiful sight. Other people on the tour were commenting the same thoughts as my own. As we continued on, the trail was a breeze, with little to no inclines and tons of nature as we passed by swamp/marsh-like areas, and more mountain views. It was quite a sight to behold, as I can barely process how nice it was and how unlike other hiking areas in Japan that I had been to. Our leisurely stroll through nature finally took us to one of our tour destinations, a little village that was more than ready to accommodate large numbers of tourist vehicles and tour buses. Among the shops, there were an abundance of souvenirs, snacks, and drink selections available. We took a group picture and then Nobue-san gave us the run down. From thereon out, we could either
continue to follow Nobue-san across the river where she would take us to a destination that served grilled char, or we could go on our own and meet back at the bus when it was time to go. I decided I’d follow the guide’s group. I don’t particularly enjoy fish or seafood for that matter, but I figured I would get the most out of my sightseeing if I followed the group. We continued further along a winding path where we spotted our first sign of local wildlife: monkeys. At first, we only saw two of them play fighting a couple hundred feet away. I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t get close enough to get a picture as too many people were in front of me, but as we continued to walk along, one of our group members spotted one lounging in a tree not too far away. We hurried over to get a couple of close up photos, and looking back now, I recall this was my first time since elementary school that I have gotten this close to a monkey that wasn’t in a zoo… little did I know that I would be even closer to one later in the day. It was a completely different experience than my previous encounter many years ago. The monkey minded its own business, sitting there relaxing without a care in the world, it was just fun to

watch it do its own thing. As we trekked along, the trail continued to surprise us with the beauty of nature. We started to hear many different types of birds, but unfortunately for myself, I do not have an eye for spotting them; nor could I tell you which birds we heard, but the environment from which we were taking it all in was absolute serenity…there was no other way to express it. I have always loved nature, but for some reason this felt different, in a very good way. We finally reached our lunch destination, a restaurant were the main dish was a local delicacy called grilled char, a fish closely related to salmon and lake trout, carefully baked on an Irori-grill. Everyone except myself and another individual decided to give it try, opting instead for the soba, which was wonderful. It was amusing to watch others apprehensively biting into the fish head and tail, their faces unsure and questioning whether it could really be eaten. Surprisingly, most found that they actually enjoyed it, although some couldn’t quite bring themselves to eat the head and/or tail. While we were sitting down, I took the time to ask other customers what
they thought of the tour. The first group I spoke with mentioned they were on TDY orders for a week, and wanted to get out on the one day they didn’t have to work. They said that it was beautiful and wished they lived in the area, and how amazing it would be to live in Japan for a few years so they would have more time to experience tours like this. Another group was from NAF Atsugi, it was their first time signing up for a Camp Zama tour, and it was awesome to hear the positive comments about how well the tour guide was doing and how nice the trip had been thus far. After lunch, I decided to take some time off to myself and head back along the path we originally came. About three-fourths of the way back, I’m taking pictures as I walk down the trail, and as I put down the camera to continue walking, three feet in front of me there’s a monkey standing right next to me looking right up at me. As I was not expecting it, I jumped and yelled, and the monkey without taking its eyes off me, also jumped, screamed, and ran back into the bushes. It ended up being a quite embarrassing moment, as there was a group of Japanese people who saw the incident. I just tried to laugh it off but man, my face was hot. Eventually I made it back to the bus area where I did some light shopping for souvenirs and snacks, then relaxed until it was time to go. I have been on many trips with Camp Zama Outdoor Recreation, mostly as a tour guide/escort, so I have rarely been on the other side, experiencing the hiking activity for the first time as a customer. Kamikochi ended up being the epitome of all hiking trips I have participated in. The cool mountain breeze, the fresh, lushness of the surrounding trees, the wildlife that ended up scaring me, all made up into a very memorable trip. I look forward to finding time to join similar hiking tours in the future.
