Tip of the Month Call to Arms My first job in golf was as a range assistant and in order to pick up all the balls, I would have to walk along the edges of the net and hit the balls back to the center, so that it could be collected with the picker. To speed up the process, I would have a club in each hand and hit balls twice faster than anyone else! I always thought this experience positively influenced my ball striking ability, because it developed strength, feel and coordination and gave me a better understanding of what each arm is supposed to do and it later become one of my more spectacular trick shots. Before I continue, please do not go out and hit balls with a club in each hand. The learning curve is great for this trick and many of the irons got dinged in the process, so don’t do it. Instead, practice hitting balls with just the lead arm, my left arm, which mainly provides the direction by controlling the club face. Try your best to keep the arm straight in the backswing and hinge from the wrists, instead of the elbow, that is how you will develop width and leverage. Next, practice hitting balls with the trailing arm, my right arm, which mainly provides the power. Try your best to release the arms and club in the follow through for maximum speed. Finally hit balls with both arms and determine which arm needs to do the most work in order to hit the best shots. Start with the shorter irons and work your way up to the driver and don’t despair if you hit some bad ones, this is one of the harder exercises, but the pay-off is worth the blood, sweat and tears. Good luck!

• Rent the simulator for an hour and choose from 24 different courses to play golf • Take a 40 minute lesson with an instructor for $50 *Call the golf shop for more information on rates & scheduling.

Dear 2017 Zama American High School Graduates, It is no surprise that graduation day is closing in. You have known about graduation day since you first were able to intellectually understand grade-level progression. And yet, when it becomes real, there is that unique mix of excitement, anxiety, uncertainly, wonderment, hope, remembrance of things past, and maybe a little unsettled. Regardless of how these feelings manifest within you, this moment in time is a good one. Being graduated from high school is a profound milestone in our American culture. It is chocked full of symbolism and meaning that mark the real first transition from childhood to adulthood. In the purest sense of the word, your «compulsory» system of education is over. No one can make you go to school ever again. However, I hope with your soon-to-be bestowed diplomas you have gained the wisdom to know that continuing your education is as important to the rest of your life as the air you breathe. There are few things outside of the personal relationships that we form that are more important than connecting to a community of thinkers. It is vital to stay current on the information and decisions that impact the choices that you have and the ways in which you do your future work. There are many metaphors describing the journey you are embarking on and new lives you will lead. But overall, this is your time. Opportunities will arise to test how well you can apply those aspects of character, service, knowledge, and community that we as educators have dedicated our professional lives to foster in you. And you do have real opportunity. No time in human history has it been more possible for an individual to have a global impact, whether great or small. And no time in human history has it been more possible for an individual to disconnect from society and live cocooned in a personalized and virtual world. I caution you against self-absorption and encourage you to stay connected. I really am excited for you. You will learn information that has never been known before; you will work in professions that might not exist right now. You will be global citizens, and you will have the potential to shape your lives in the ways you want to be fulfilled and, I hope, endlessly happy. Please be well as you leave the world of Zama American High School, and please do everything you can to think about others and care about the words you use, the actions you take, and the impact you leave behind. With kind regards and affection,

Dr. Louis D’Angelo Principal, ZAHS
