Width of Arc

You may have heard that a long backswing can generate extra speed and there is truth to that statement, but to maximize power, you have to also work on the width of arc? So, how does the width determine speed? Think of the story of David and Goliath. David used a slingshot to hurl pebbles, but now imagine how effective he would be if his sling was only 1” long (red circle), you can imagine that he would not generate any kind of speed, but by using a longer sling, the swing circle or width of arc is greater (green circle), therefore the speed the pebbles can travel on is faster. The same is true with the club and the ball. How is width determined? For this you have to look at your backswing, when your left arm is parallel to the ground. At that time your left arm needs to be straight and the angle your wrists/club form with the left arm needs to be greater than 90 degrees, mine is 112 degrees and Bubba Watson is even more, probably around 135. On the downswing, the angle the club and my left arm is reduced to 68 degrees. This is known as lag. Bubba Watson looks like 45 degrees, that’s why he hits 40 yards further than I do. The energy you have built up is now loaded in the wrists. The greater the lag, the faster the hands can release. This is not a comfortable position if you stop to work on it, but in a fluid swing, it feels fine. At impact, the left arm and club form a straight line, this is when all energy that was stored in the wrists is finally released into the ball, but keep in mind that the weight has shifted and hips have cleared and they continue to turn until long after impact, this is the only way to keep that front arm straight through the hitting zone and avoid the dreaded “chicken wing” or scooping motion, which narrows your arc, which reduces your speed, which creates inconsistency. To sum it up, work on your width of arc for more distance, this applies to all clubs and you may actually find it easier to start with wedges and then build it up to the Driver and remember, the only way you know your swing changed is if you see it on video, a pro tells you or you feel awkward, yet the ball goes further. Good luck!

Matsumoto Castle & Zenkoji Temple

The Matsumoto Castle is the oldest existing castle in Japan and one of Japan’s premier historic castles. It’s also known as the “Crow Castle” because of its black exterior. With 400 years of history, it is a National Treasure that every Japan visitor should see! Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple is one the most imortant and popular temples in Japan. It was founded in the 7th century and stores the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought into Japan when Buddhism was first introduced in the 6th century. The original statue is hidden while a copy of it is shown to the public every six years for a few weeks. The next opportunity will be in 2021.

The Story of the Fourth of July The Declaration of Independence dence Day on We celebrate American Indepen think of July 4, We . year the Fourth of July every Declaration of the ts 1776, as a day that represen United States the Independence and the birth of on. But July of America as an independent nati tinental Con4, 1776 wasn’t the day that the Con pendence (they gress decided to declare inde n’t the day we did that on July 2, 1776). It was either (that had started the American Revolution it wasn’t the And 5). 177 happened back in April draft of the first the day Thomas Jefferson wrote in June was t (tha Declaration of Independence was tion lara Dec 1776). Or the date on which the l unti pen ’t hap delivered to Great Britain (that didn t (tha ed was sign November 1776). Or the date it 6). was August 2, 177

So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They’d been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered. In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not the anniversary of the date it was approved. If we’d followed this same approach for the Declaration of Independence we’d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed!

How did the Fourth of July become a national holiday? For the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written, people didn’t celebrate it much on any date. It was too new and too much else was happening in the young nation. By the 1790s, a time of bitter partisan conflicts, the Declaration had become controversial. One party, the Democratic-Republicans, admired Jefferson and the Declaration. But the other party, the Federalists, thought the Declaration was too French and too anti-British, which went against their current policies. By 1817, John Adams complained in a letter that America seemed uninterested in its past. But that would soon change.

After the War of 1812, the Federalist party began to come apart and the new parties of the 1820s and 1830s all considered themselves inheritors of Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans. Printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate again, all with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top. The deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826, may even have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated.

Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and 1941 SOURCE: http://www.constitutionfacts.com/

I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration. Immediately after graduation I enlisted in the Army as an Airborne Infantryman. I spent the next four years stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. After leaving active duty I spent a short stint working for a Parks and Recreation Department in my hometown of Mesquite, Texas before leaving for a position in sports and fitness with Marine Corps Community Services on Camp Schwab in Okinawa. While there I learned a great deal about Japan, military recreation services, and also met my lovely wife, Karen Strother. A few years later I made the excellent decision to come back to work for the Army as a civilian in DFMWR on Fort A.P. Hill, VA as a Fitness Facility Manager. This past May, my passion for sports and fitness, the Army, and Japan has brought me to Camp Zama to continue doing what I love as the Fitness Program Coordinator. I look forward to seeing and working with you all!
