You Talked, We Listened. Historically, the Camp Zama Community Club (CZCC) was closed on Mondays. Community feedback pointed out that as the focal point for all command and community activities to include meetings, training and social events, the CZCC should be fully open when the base population is at it’s highest, ready and available to support the needs of our Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members. As a result, not only are we now open on Mondays for Lunch/ Dinner Banquet Facilities---we’re also rolling out a NEW LUNCH BUFFET from Monday thru Friday to expedite lunch service. Come stop by, and see what we’ve prepared for you! Dining room and Banquet space will be open Mondays Dinner on Saturday and Sunday will be Closed Starting May 1, 2017

CAMP ZAMA GOLF CLUB Camp Zama • Bldg. 809 • DSN: 263-5284 • Commercial: 046-407-5284
Tip of the Month Spin Loft When golf became televised, people started noticing a strange phenomenon, sometimes a ball would hit the green and spin backwards. An ambitious reporter tried to get the legendary golfer “Slammin” Sam Snead to share his secret of imparting backspin and ever the gentleman, he acknowledged the reporter and asked him how far he hit his wedge. Excited that he might get the answer he longed for, he answered 68 yards, to which Sam Snead replied, well for Pete’s sake, why do you need it to come back then? There are multiple factors that can increase backspin, such as the material of a multi-layer golf ball, groove depth and cleanliness, the green slope, length of grass, the wind direction and most of all a launch monitor parameter known as Spin Loft, which is the difference between the club’s angle of attack and the dynamic loft, as illustrated in the image. More Spin Loft means More Backspin.
Here I am demonstrating two different finishes for a pitch. On the left, the club face remains open and my hands are finished by my side, indicating a steep path with an open face, which means a higher trajectory with more backspin and thus less roll, ideal for pitching your ball to a front pin location. On the right, the club was allowed to rotate and my hands remain more in front of my body, indicating a shallower path and more of a closed face, which means a lower trajectory with less backspin and thus more roll, ideal for pitching your ball to a back pin location. I cannot guarantee that your ball will spin back when it hits the green, but you can certainly learn to control the amount of spin you impart on the ball with the knowledge and skills provided. Good luck!

Children’s DayIN ‘Kodomo-no-Hi’ otherwise knows as Children’s Day is a Japanese national holiday celebrated on May 5th. The word was derived from ‘Tango-no-Sekku’ or Iris Festival, in which the custom was to display Iris flowers on house entrances to ward off evil spirits. The Iris flowers are called ‘Shobu’ in Japanese roughly translated as martial spirits or fights, and the flowers themselves look like sharp swords, imagery typically linked to boys and men. This celebration was originally exclusively male, celebrating boys and recognizing fathers, but throughout the years, this has changed since to include all children, boys or girls.
What’s with all the carp streamers, you might say? The ‘Koi-Nobori’ once became the symbol of a boy’s birth in the Edo period. When a boy was born in the family of a general, they presented a flag outside to celebrate the birth of a successor. Eventually, the custom spread to samurai families and commoners, and carps replaced flags signifying a Chinese legend about a carp who climbed a waterfall and became a dragon. The carp fluttering (swimming) in the wind, came to symbolize success in life, something all good parents and family members wish for all their children and loved ones.
N JAPAN by Nana Shibayama
So if you see several carp streamers on this day, just remember that the black carp ‘Magoi’ represents the father, the red carp ‘Higoi’ represents the mother, and the last carp represents the child, traditionally a son, with an additional smaller carp added for each subsequent child with color and position denoting their relative age. The purpose of Children’s Day is to celebrate children’s happiness and although not widely known, it also meant ‘appreciating a mother’s love for their children, mothers who ask nothing in return.’ Oh, and just in case you forget, Mother’s Day also happens to fall in May---no, we did not make this stuff up! Hug your Children on this special day, hug Mom too, and don’t forget Dad because this day used to be a celebration of boys and men…..celebrate this day with love and care, and if you can; raise a ‘Koi-Nobori’ and officially celebrate Children’s Day in Japan on May 5th. See you around!

Did you know? Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) programs are supported with both Appropriated Funds (APFs) and Nonappropriated Funds (NAFs). APFs are taxpayer dollars passed by Congress on an appropriations bill. NAFs are revenues generated by you the customer. Not all MWR programs receive APFs to support their programs, and must generate revenue in order to cover operational costs such as equipment, labor, and supply expenses. As a result, guests are charged user fees in our MWR programs that are not mission critical. For several years our MWR programs in Japan received additional funds that allowed us to subsidize many of our community programs. This additional revenue source allowed us to fund special events and waive user fees in programs such as the Recreational Swimming pool located at Sagamihara Family Housing Area (SFHA). Unfortunately, due to congressional budget cuts these subsidies have drastically decreased making it necessary to generate revenue to keep many of our programs operational. This is why you will see changes in our program structure, for example, the SFHA pool will now be charging user fees . While there will be a fee associated with use of the pool, we are pleased to announce that those fees will be reasonably priced compared to other US military recreational pools. We are committed to reducing costs as much as operationally feasible, and we will strive to provide military, family-friendly pricing as much as possible.
Thank You for Your Understanding

If you ever have a whim to clean your windows all of a sudden and you don’t have an actual window cleaner, oolong tea works pretty good. For example, if you are a smoker you know your windows will have the typical cigarette smoke residue which tends to cloud them up. The natural ingredients in oolong tea actually help break down the tar for easy cleaning. You can buy a bottle of oolong tea at any convenience store, doesn’t leave streaks and you can drink
