January 2018 Tour Highlights Get out & see Japan!
Ski & Snowboard Trip to Nozawa Onsen
Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is a hot spring and ski resort village in Nagano Prefecture, one of Japan’s most superb and expansive winter sports areas. Extending from the top to the foot of Mt. Kenashi (1,650m), Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort boasts an altitude differential of 1,085 meters and a total ski slope area of 734 acres. Indeed, the resort ranks among the very top in Japan in terms of size, its history and snow quality. The abundance of 100% natural, high-quality powder snow allows you to enjoy skiing well into spring. The unlimited variety of slopes and courses, including the exciting snow park, guarantees satisfaction to snow lovers of all levels from the advanced to beginners as well as families, providing all comers with the ideal playground to enjoy.
Snow Monkey & Matsumoto Castle
Visit Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park and enjoy this rare opportunity to observe the interesting life style of Japanese Macaque monkeys. Almost 200 monkeys inhabit the area and relax by bathing in the hot spring. After, we head to Matsumoto Castle. The castle formerly named “Fukashi” was built over 400 years ago. The six-story black painted wooden keep is the oldest surviving structure in Japan and designated as a national treasure.
Ski & Snowboard Trip to Myoko Suginohara
Myoko ski resort, located in Niigata Prefecture, has a wide range of ski and snowboard slopes. Enjoy beautiful views of Lake Nojiri and the mountains to the south and east (even Mt. Fuji on a clear day) with long downhill slopes for all levels. Check out the Suginohara’s 8.5 kilometer run, the longest in the nation.

Does your Best Friend need Grooming? Happy New Year Camp Zama! 2018 represents the Japanese “Year of the Dog.” To ensure that not only your Dog is taken care of we have increased services offered at our Pet Care Center. Outdoor Recreation’s (ODR) newly created, pet grooming program now includes the professional services of Saori Nakamura, Pet Groomer, to give your dog the love, care and attention they deserve! Saori Nakamura has been with Camp Zama since November 1, 2017. Prior to that, Nakamura-san has over ten years of experience working as a Pet Groomer for a local Japanese pet store, and five years as a Veterinarian’s Assistant and Pet Grooming Specialist at a veterinary clinic. She’s also a certified dog lover, and the proud owner of Nacchi, a 17-year old poodle. Nakamura-san’s passion was influenced by her mother, who was a great Saori Nakamura animal lover; both grew up with pets and taking care of dogs came naturally. When asked what she loves the most about her job, Nakamura-san’s eyes lit up, she smiled and explained: “It makes me so happy to see the delighted reactions from pet owners when they see their newly groomed dog. This part of the job is so rewarding, seeing owners or their children so happy, makes all the effort very worthwhile. This is a huge part of the reason why I’ve done this job for so long.” The Family & MWR Pet Grooming program was created as a result of customer demand. With Nakamura-san, you can be rest assured of a very capable, and very experienced Pet Groomer here in Camp Zama! Stop by the Pet Care Center today to meet Nakamura-san and make a special appointment for your furry friend.

We focus on community service, leadership, public speaking workshops, and other professional and academic development skills in order to prepare our teens for a successful future. Keystone Club absolutely believes that our teens and members are the future leaders of their generation. This project was a collaboration between Yano Fitness Center and the Keystone Club teen members of the Youth Center and will serve as an art installation that members of the entire Camp Zama community can share and enjoy for many years to come. Over 200 hours of time were volunteered to create this beautiful artwork. Great Job!

Here’s a Winter Tip Now that winter is here it is time to prepare for the morning freeze. If the forecast calls for really low to freezing temperatures or even snow that evening or in the morning, if possible have the wipers on your car in the “up” position so it does not stick to the windshield. This will save the wiper blades and once the windshield warms up enough you can put them down and used them to wipe off the rest of the frost.
Note: There’s a $5.00 instructional fee and you must sign up prior to the day of the class. Participants are responsible for all materials/supplies for the class.
