Family Fitness Area at the Community Recreation Center

Monday, Wednesday & Thursday: 8 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday & Friday: 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. U.S. Holidays: Closed *Open after 7 p.m. for SKIES Programming.

On October 2, 2017, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation with support from the United States Army Garrison Japan, Department of Public Works, presented the Camp Zama, Family Fitness Area to the community. This project was a result of a community survey held in partnership with the Community Health Promotion Council, which voiced a need for a fitness area uniquely tailored for parents with children ages 11 and under. The FFA includes a soft play area for children ages 5 and under and designated space for children 6-11. Fitness equipment includes dumbbells (5-40 lbs.), two treadmills, a cross-trainer, recumbent bike, and a concept rower. This initiative is a beginning of a long-term concept plan for the Community Recreation Center, which includes future plans to expand the CYS SKIES gymnastics program by adding permanent space, and relocating the ITT and the Warrior Zone.

CAMP ZAMA GOLF CLUB Camp Zama • Bldg. 809 DSN: 263-5284 Commercial: 046-407-5284

Tip of the Month Golf ’s Sweet Spot Nothing is better than that feeling of a well struck shot, but why is it so elusive, why is it so difficult to be more consistent? Well, the good news is that you can be. Start by finding the sweetspot on every club. To do this, hold the club up with thumb and index and using a tee, start tapping around the club face. On off center hits, especially near the heel and toe, you will feel the club twist, but when you tap the sweetspot, the club remains stable, that is the spot you want to hit the ball for maximum energy transfer. Mark the sweetspot with a sharpie or dry erase marker. You may notice that the sweetspot is not always in the center of the club. With irons it tends to be closer to the heel and with drivers it may be higher in the face and even towards the toe. This may seem like a design flaw, but it is not. Now that you know where each club’s sweetspot is, it’s time to see if you can hit it. The best thing would be to use impact tape, but if you don’t have it, you can use talcum powder or liquid footspray, so that after each shot, you can clearly see where the ball has hit the face. Knowing where your sweetspot is and focusing on it can increase your distance significantly and improve your consistency. Good luck!

Services

Tip of the month Did you know you can use your A/C to defog the inside of the windows during winter? All you have to do is switch on the A/C when the heater is on. The A/C helps with drying out the air in the car which helps keep the windows from fogging up. And be sure to have the vents in the “re-circulation” mode and not “outside air” mode, this helps with warming up the inside of the car faster.

• Used Vehicle Courtesy Inspection We offer a 20-point courtesy inspection for soldiers and eligible Camp Zama Personnel who are considering the purchase or resale of a used vehicle. This inspection is to help assess the condition of the vehicle before buying or selling. Inspections are done by appointments only. • Wash-N-Wax Service Our Wash-N-Wax service consists of a basic wash & wax of the outside only, with tire waxing included. There is an additional cost for cleaning the interior. For more information and fees, please stop by or give us a call. • Towing Service & Roadside Assistance Wednesday ~ Sunday • Within Camp Zama - $25 During open hours of the Auto Skills Center. *For more info and rates, please give us a call. • Tire Changing Service The Auto Skills Center now has the capability to change tires on 17 inch and larger wheels. *For more information, give us a call. • Vehicle Exterior Buffing NEW SERVICE Can you see swirls or small scratches in the surface of your paint? Give us a try to buff them out! Prices start at $50 for compact or yellow plate “KEI” cars. *Please note that buffing will only get the scratches and swirls that are on the surface, anything that has gone past the paint cannot be fixed except by re-painting it.

What is Thanksgiving?

Article & Photos by Samantha Lymburn-Law “Thanksgiving is a time when friends and families come together, share a meal and shine a light on what they are thankful for. I especially look forward to this holiday because during this time, I reflect on my experiences I’ve had and people I’ve met this past year. There’s no doubt that being part of a military family has its challenges, but one of the aspects I’m grateful for is having the opportunity to move to different places, see new things and meet new people. I am thankful for my parents, brothers and husband who have all supported me from day one. I am especially grateful to be given the opportunity to live in a beautiful country that I never thought I’d visit. Last but not least, I am thankful for my job and my coworkers who always make coming to work enjoyable. Living in Japan has been an amazing experience for me, and my time here will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Reiko Komiya • DHR

“I am thankful and appreciate everything I have and my health.”

Ronald McCray Security Office

“What I am thankful for is my family, friends, love and good health.”

Marvin Deboest • Security Office

“I am thankful for family, good health and good friends. The support of family and friends can make a world of a difference when you have life obstacles to conquer. I am thankful for freedom of speech. Being able to express your thoughts and feelings freely should never be taken for granted.”

Rebecca Palmer • Security Office

“I am thankful for my family; my husband of 25 years and my girls, Reagan and Zoe who give me stress, but bring joy and happiness in my life. I am thankful for the opportunity to work and live in Japan; the culture, the people, and its beauty. And, I am thankful to the first responders helping those impacted by the recent flooding, hurricane, typhoon, and most tragic and senseless shooting in Las Vegas. My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to all of them and their families.”

CPT James Primm • Garrison Command Group

“Yesterday, in Las Vegas, a gunman fired an automatic weapon into a crowd of people causing the worst mass shooting in modern American history. It may seem hard to find a silver lining in such a horrific act of terror, but it’s times like these that we should all be reminded of the things for which we’re most grateful. Understanding that all sentient beings have a relatively short life span gives me incentive to love my family more NOW, to judge my neighbor less NOW, and to deepen my faith NOW. While I may plan for tomorrow and I fret less about yesterday, I am most grateful for today, because today is all I have NOW.”

Berlito Capulong • Military Personnel Division

“First of all, I am thankful that God has given me good health and a loving family. I am thankful that I have a stable job and very kind and supportive co-workers. I am especially thankful for my three loving and thoughtful children.”

Amy Goetting SSGT Alex Goetting • 374CS

“I’m thankful for my wife with me during the holidays, my family’s health, and spending the holidays with good people while away from family.”

WO1 Joel Ferguson 35th CSSB

“I’m thankful for everything! Life itself is worth being thankful for. I’m thankful for my kids! I’m thankful for my Soldiers!”

“I’m thankful for being able to tell my Japanese students that I am an American. I’m thankful for my husband’s unconditional love. I’m also thankful for my friends and family back home for their love and support and their well-being.”

MSG Yvonne Heredia-Bell 35th CSSB

“I’m thankful for everything the Army provides for me and my family.”

Amaya Peruccio • Zama High School

“I am thankful for my family and friends, both who live here and in the States. They are always there for me and support me unconditionally. They have all contributed to many of the life lessons I have learned so far. Without them, I would not be the person I am today.“

SGT Regina Malloy • 35th CSSB

“I’m thankful to be a MALLOY! My father has been the best role model I could ask for. I know he has my back no matter the obstacles I encounter. I’m thankful to have a supportive leadership and for all my fellow comrades that keep a smile on my face.”

SSG Christopher Lett • 35th CSSB

“I’m thankful for the Army giving me a means to succeed and overcome obstacles in my life. For the opportunity to travel and see the world. I’m grateful to the Japanese culture for embracing the opportunity to work alongside American Soldiers.”

Katelyn Gessner • Zama Middle High Secretary

“I’m thankful for my health and the health of my family. I am thankful for my loving husband. I am thankful for living in a beautiful country full of friendly people and opportunities. I am thankful to be able to travel the world.”

Ayako Francisco • Arnn Elementary

“I am thankful for having an awesome family and friends who are always kind and fun to be with. I’m thankful for everything that I have and especially to Papa Jesus for giving me a fun and comfortable life.”
