My Little Golfer

Golf is a game for life, but like all else, it is easier to learn when you are young. *I recently started teaching classes for 3, 4 & 5 year olds on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and would like to share some tips with you.

Make it Fun

• Practice with people of similar age and level. • Play lots of games, the competition will drive your child to excel. • Use soft items, such as sponge balls, balloons, beach balls to practice at home. Celebrate all successes!

Learning

• Kids will copy what you do, not what you say, make sure you are a good role model and give lots of visual clues. • Set clear and simple goals, such as hit the ball to the hole. Part of the fun of learning is figuring things out on your own, have patience, create learning opportunities by being a coach and avoid spoon feeding cookie cut answers. • Sign up for regular lessons with a certified pro.

Equipment

• All kids should use age appropriate clubs, just like all adults should have custom fit clubs for maximum enjoyment US Kids Golf is the leader for jr. golf clubs. • We use SNAG golf, specially developed clubs and balls for kids to ensure success.

Rules & Etiquette

• Introduce them gradually to rules & etiquette, such as shaking hands, raking bunker, fixing ball marks, returning the flag, where to start, who’s turn it is, FORE, etc. • There’s really not a lot of difference between adult and junior lessons, everyone should set clear goals, practice with a friend and make it fun, take regular lessons, have the right equipment, study the rules and etiquette and watch better golfers.

Hiroshima 3 Day Adventure

Just a “Heads Up” on this adventure! It’s not until late November, but you’ll need to make reservations much sooner. Hiroshima, the City of International Peace and Culture, is also known for being the first city demolished by an atomic bomb, and was formerly known as a beautiful water city, which flourishing culture represented the best in the western part of Japan. There are two World Heritage sites in Hiroshima. One is the Itsukushima Shrine and the other is Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Itsukushima Shrine is one the most significant shrines in Japan and the only shrine in the world which has a torii gate and shrine building in the middle of the sea. The view from the sea is considered one of the best three views in all of Japan. On this tour we will visit the Peace Memorial Museum & Park, Kintai Bridge, Miyajima Island and we’ll also visit Himeji Castle on the way to Hiroshima on the first day.

Prost! So, what is it about Oktoberfest? What is it that makes it the largest festival in the world? Yes, the largest! And this is only in Munich, Germany where over 6 million visitors come every year. There are hundreds of Oktoberfest celebrations in every corner of the world. One of those corners of the world is our little world – a small American military base in the middle of Japan. This is where Americans and Japanese celebrate together this German tradition with German beer (of course), Chicken Dance, Oompah music, German food and the best part, sharing a table with complete strangers that are now friends. This last one might be the biggest reason why Oktoberfest became so popular around the world and why we invite you to our event on October 14 and 15. New friendships are guaranteed.

The beer rules

There are strict rules on what kind of beer can be served during the event and they must meet the Bavarian Purity Law. This states that the beer must have a “Stammwürze” of 13.5%. This isn’t the alcohol content but it’s a measurement used in brewing that gives an alcohol content of about 6%. In Munich, all beers come from six Munich breweries -- Hacker Pschorr, Hofbräu, Paulaner, Spaten, Lowenbrau, and Augustiner and it must be brewed within Munich’s city limits.

A wedding celebration The Munch Oktoberfest started in 1810 as a wedding celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields have been named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s fields”) in honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the “Wies’n”. Therefore, today you might hear “welcome to the Wies’n” when you arrive to the festival in Munich.

Traditions

No Oktoberfest is complete without the Chicken Dance, a long festival tradition. Set to an oom-pah song of the same name, Der Ententanz (“Dance Little Bird,” or simply put, “The Chicken Dance”) is one of the few reasons to put down your beer. Believe it or not, Cincinnati, Ohio made the Guinness Book of Records in 1994 by orchestrating the world’s largest Chicken Dance with approximately 48,000 participants. We might not have those numbers here, but we certainly have the spirit. Look on our schedule for a Chicken Dance competition and show off those moves. Everybody is invited to wear traditional outfits, lederhosen for men and dirndl for women.
