Wild Rose Co-op
May 3, 2022
Recording star Gord Bamford has made several recent trips to Camrose to personally thank sponsors and their staff and drum up support for Wild Rose Co-op Fuel Good Community Concert.
FUEL GOOD
COMMUNITY CONCERT
About a year back, a very cool country concert, with a very honourable goal, was announced for a fall 2021 presentation at Camrose Regional Exhibition. Wild Rose Co-op’s Fuel Good Community Concert, starring Gord Bamford, was conceived as a way for the Gord Bamford Foundation to raise money for Camrose community groups. With strict health regulations in place on the original concert date, the excitement of amazing music by Bamford and guests Maddison Krebbs and Blake Reid was delayed coming to our community until 7 p.m., Saturday, May 7. Thanks to sponsorship/partnership by Peavey Mart, Kubota Canada, Camrose Chrysler, 840 CFCW, New Country 98.1, Wild Rose Co-op and, of course, the Gord Bamford Foundation, all ticket proceeds and other funds raised as a direct result of this initiative will be returned to recognized local community groups.

Lemonade Day set for June 18 By Lori Larsen
Get ready to pucker up. Camrose Lemonade Day is coming back and residents will be seeing lemonade stands sprouting up around Camrose and area on June 18. Lemonade Day is a free and fun experiential learning program that teaches children the ins and out of starting, owning and operating their own small business–in this case, a lemonade stand. “We are proud to announce that this year, kids living in Camrose and surrounding towns will once again join the fun,” said Community Futures East Central Alberta, project coordinator/Small Business advisor Louise Jones. Lemonade Day has spread to over 57 cities in 23 states and three countries, including Canada. In 2021, 696 kids participated in Northern Alberta Lemonade Day and they donated $7371.20 to local charities. “Participants of Lemonade Day keep all the money they earn,” noted Jones. “However, the program encourages them to spend some, save some, and share some. So, many of the kids will donate a portion
of their proceeds to a charity of their choice.” The initiative is open to children/youth in kindergarten to high school. Each child who registers will attend Lemonade University where they will receive a free backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the valuable lessons of Lemonade Day. “The lessons include how to set a goal, make a plan, work the plan and achieve their dreams,” explained Jones. “Our instructor will lead the participants through the workbook ensuring they have all the skills they need to become business owners.” Jones said that aside from the actual lemonade stand business operators, the initiative reaches out to many members of the community to participate. “Young entrepreneurs with lemonade stands will need mentors, investors, business partners, great locations, and customers. Sponsors and volunteers are also needed to make Lemonade Day a success.” In an effort to ensure the continued safety and well-being of all participants, the Lemonade Day team will be closely moni-
toring the COVID-19 situation and following guidance and guidelines implemented by Canada Public Health and Alberta Health. “We will adjust the program as required,” explained Jones. “We will make alterations to the delivery of the program as deemed necessary. The safety of our children/ youth, parents, staff and communities is our top priority.” The goal of Lemonade Day Northern Alberta is to register as many youth as possible, who in turn will start new businesses across Northern Alberta all on a single day. For more information or to register for Lemonade Day Northern Alberta, visit https://lemonadeday.org/ northern-alberta or contact your local contact Louise Jones at louise@cfeast central.ca or telephone 780-781-3673 Community Futures East Central Alberta. Information can also be seen on Lemonade Day Northern Alberta Facebook page at: https://www. facebook.com/LemonadeDayNorthernAlberta/.

Band Celebration Day at school Less could be more The title attracted my attention: Critical Things Ridiculously Successful People Do Every Day by Dr. Travis Bradberry. I appreciated the opening quote: “Whenever you see a successful person, you only see the public glories, never the private sacrifices to reach them.” (Vaibhav Shah. Right. The article was based on a project by Kevin Kruse, who interviewed over 200 supersuccessful people including billionaires, Olympians and accomplished entrepreneurs. He asked them, “What is your number one secret to productivity?” The title and the question triggered my deep and abiding ambivalence about two words: “success” and “productivity”. ***
Success. In earlier years, it seemed to me that “success” was usually defined by money. I didn’t consider myself successful that area. Over a few decades, I refined my personal definition of “success” to include happy connections with people I treasure, freedom for new experiences, opportunities to learn and contribute, and inner peace. I began to think of money, not as an end in itself, but as one of several vehicles for rewarding experiences. I began to feel more successful. ***
Productivity. My ambivalent relationship with “productivity” is closely related to the idea of “time management”. On one hand, especially in the busy years of raising children while having demanding jobs and going back to school, my definition of “productivity” was about slogging through overlong “to do” lists while looking after important people in my life. Since I never ever got to the end of the “to do” list and often felt much less present than I wanted to be for important people, I never felt “productive”. Even while I felt compelled to make every minute count to get things done, I pined for time off with no responsibilities. I’d go flat-out for days or weeks, and then rebel by fullstop ignoring the “to do” list. I didn’t really enjoy time off, though, because I felt guilty about what I was not doing. In more recent years, I’m playing with a different concept of “productivity” to mean “a state of well-being”. That includes a sense of contentment, a sense of meaningful contribution, and a sense of freedom. “Freedom” doesn’t mean no limits; it means I’m able to do and be and have whatever matters to me in a particular moment. What I’ve noticed is easier and more fun turns out to be more effective than harder and more stressful. This is gratifying. Less is more! ***
Back to the article. Despite my ambivalence about “success” and “productivity”, I kept reading about how highly successful people are so productive. Three things stood out for me. They focus on minutes, not hours. They know that every day has 1,440 minutes and that nothing is more valuable than time. Money can be lost and made again, but time can never be reclaimed. A quote: “Master the minutes to master your life.” They don’t use “to do” lists. Undone items on a “to do” list lead to stress because the undone tasks stay on your mind until you finish them (exactly my experience!). Instead, highly productive people schedule everything on their calendar and then live by their calendar. They make it home for dinner. Highly successful people know what they value in life and consciously allocate their 1,440 minutes a day to each area they value. Yes, work, but also what else they value – family time, exercise, giving back. They schedule time for each important area of their life. ***
Less is more. I’m percolating how to be fully present in each minute. Instead of a “to do” list, I identify what needs to be done by when and make sure my schedule includes time to “do nothing” and “have fun”, as well as time for “get it done” actions. And I’m really enjoying the concept that “easier” and “more fun” is actually more effective. ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

The east gym and surrounding halls of École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS) were filled with the sound of music, as several school bands from around Battle River School Division gathered for a live Band Celebration Day on April 26. Seated in a circle around the gym were: ÉCCHS (Junior Grade 9 Band, and Senior Band), École Charlie Killam School (ÉCKS) (Grade 7 Band), Forestburg Grade 8/9 Band and For-
estburg High School Band, Hay Lakes School Band, Bawlf Junior Band, New Norway Beginner Band and Bawlf Grade 5 and Grade 6 Bands. Each band played pieces for adjudicators, after which they would retreat to the band room to hear remarks. With the entire gym full of band members, music teachers, adjudicators and other school officials (over 200) there was little room left for in-person spectators, so the entire festival/
concert was live-streamed so parents and others could enjoy the fruits of the students’ labour. The festival was, by all accounts, quite a success. Students were able to once again gather in-person and listen and learn from each other. In a room filled with close to 200 students and a variety of instruments, all one could hear was the music of the performing band. Impressive.

In May 1932, a new and exciting organization was instituted with 14 members. A full slate of officers was elected. Camrose will be celebrating 90 years on May 7 at 5 p.m. downstairs of the Elks Hall. This new charitable organization soon became evident in the community. They recruited new members and membership grew. They were called The Order of Royal Purple of Canada until 2007, then they became Camrose Royal Purple under the Royal Purple of Canada. “We are pleased to have many members with longstanding service. Members range from 70 years to five years. We are so thankful that we’ve had these members to guide us over the decades,” said Loyal Lady Marion Czapp, a 50-plus year member. What was the purpose of the new club? “We were here to do charitable work. Catering soon began and our most successful fundraiser was our Christmas pudding making. This lasted over 50 years. The puddings made their way all across Canada and a few made it to United States,” recalled Marion. “Unfortunately, all things have to come to a end. As supplies got scarce, it got difficult to maintain. We sadly had to say goodbye to our purple
and white cans. We continued to fundraise in other ways– catering, volunteering at bingo, selling tickets and holding a casino. Charity donations supporting children groups in the community such as preschool, kindergarten, children’s breakfast club and fire victims. Other charities are just to numerous to mention.” The Royal Purple chari-
table donations were $6,000 over this past year, a difficult task during COVID-19. “Our Royal Purple has always been a fun group, not only did we work hard, we had fun. We were known for our skits, songs and fun activities. We loved to travel and visited other lodges whenever possible. We always had a few cars with the Purple ladies head-
ing for home,” shared Marion. “We are still an active lodge with fewer members, but still raising funds for those charities such as dollars with our bingo, casino, tickets sales and other opportunities as they come forward. “I want to thank our members who are unable to be with us. We thank you for your friendship and guid-
ance. We are fortunately to have the support of the Elks who work side by side with us. Thank you for all you do.” The Royal Purple invites anyone to visit on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. For further information call Doreen at 780-672-3656 or Marion at 780-672-4326.

Powerline Baseball League to start 84th season By Murray Green
The Powerline Baseball League is back for another season in the area. However, a new season means a few changes. The league will have six teams in 2022 with the Camrose
Roadrunners, Rosalind Athletics, Tofield Braves, Vegreville Blue Jays and the 2021 champion Armena Royals returning to compete for the league title. A new team has
emerged called the Battle River Rivals. The team is mostly made up of former Spring Lake Lakers and Heisler Cardinals players. The Camrose Axemen and Edmonton Expos have dropped out of contention.
The Powerline Baseball League will begin it’s 84th season with games on the May 14th weekend across the league as teams will play a 15 game season before heading into playoffs.
Stephen Hrabec of Vegreville is the president of the league. An all-star game featuring players from the PBL and the Battle River Baseball League has been slated for June 15 in Camrose.

Project attracts investment By Lori Larsen
In an effort to build investment attraction skills capacity for BRAED’s stakeholder communities throughout the Battle River Region, Invest Alberta and Battle River Alliance Economic Development (BRAED) are partnering in the launching of pilot project. The project, the first of its kind in the province, is designed as a learning partnership with key outcomes necessary for communities to host investors and effectively communicate the value they bring to the table. City of Camrose Community Development general manager Patricia MacQuarrie said. “The City is really excited about this project. Invest Alberta has a huge reach in attraction
activities and partnering through this project helps to, literally, put Camrose on the map.” Investor Services at Invest Alberta, vice-president Lynette Tremblay, views the pilot project and partnership as a way to help partners attract new high-impact investments in Alberta communities. “The Investor Readiness Pilot Project is an informative and interactive way for Invest Alberta to help partners tell their unique investment story to the world. There are exciting projects happening in every corner of Alberta, and we look forward to engaging with BRAED as we continue to position Alberta as a destination of choice for high-value investment.” Continued on page 13

Shumka dancers to hold workshop By Murray Green
During the pandemic, Shumka has been working on various projects to remain active and focused on its vision. One such project is an emerging artist opportunity– an investment in new works and choreographers for succession and artistic development of the organization and local arts community. The Emerge program gives dancers the unique opportunity to create their own piece of choreography under the Shumka name, with the resources and support of Shumka. The project allows for new works and encourages hidden talents within the organization for succession planning. Seven works are currently in progress. Mentorship, production assistance, and access to resources, including cohort dancers,
are being provided. In addition, the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose has come on board in support of an Artist-inResidency project this summer. The new works will be rehearsed and teched from July 19 to 21, and then performed for a live audience the evening of July 22. The performance of these seven works, each five to 10 minutes in length, will be followed by an artist-audience postshow chat to discuss influences, motivations and artistic insights. The proceeds of this event will go towards the Ukrainian artists support program. Within Shumka, new works are created by members of the artistic team or commissioned by Shum-
ka to choreographers in Canada or Ukraine. While company dancers can hold dance captain positions for rehearsal purposes, they are rarely given opportunities to develop a concept, create choreography, cast dancers, work with designers and prepare a piece for performance for an audience. Emerge provides a safe and supported environment to experiment with the creative process. This is a mutually beneficial project. Through the Emerge program, Shumka can test out riskier works, while giving young artists professional opportunities that could shape their future careers and, potentially, Shumka’s ultimate direction. This program is made possible in part through support from the Heart and Soul Fund by EPCOR.

The Camrose Refugee Centre will be holding a special dessert evening at the Bailey Theatre on May 6 at 7 p.m. You can join volunteers for an evening of coffee, dessert, entertainment and both silent and live auctions to benefit Ukrainian refugee families who are relocating to Camrose. “We are raising funds for four families to settle in Camrose. The money we raise at this event goes to support those families. Each family incurs costs for plane tickets, living expenses and food. Then when they arrive, they have to pay for everything and those people will need some support,” said Becky McCarroll, from the organizing committee. “Olena Kardash said she wanted to bring two or three families over to help them out. Another person wanted to bring two families as well. One of those families were Olena’s parents, who have since moved here. The Camrose Refugee Centre has helped refugees in the past, so we wanted to help as a support group for the families who are bringing families over as well,” explained Becky. “It is a difficult situation in Ukraine and we want to help. We want to share with local people how the process works. One of the big differences with Ukrainian families is that the government has simplified the process to get people here faster. The normal process to be deemed a refugee must go through the United Nations, for which there has been no time. The Canadian government calls them Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emer-
gency Travel (CUAET) applicants,” shared Becky. “Some of the fees have been waved, however, there is no financial assistance available, as would be with a typical refugee. That means all funds they need have to be raised privately,” shared Becky. The Canadian government is allowing Ukrainians to come to Canada for work or study, but there is no financial support available for them at this time. The funds raised at this event will help pay for airfare, housing and living expenses while they get settled and established. “It makes it difficult for someone going to a different country that has a different language and you have to find a job. Our goal is simple–raise as much money as we can to support them.” The Ukraine is not allowing males between 18 and 60 to leave the country, causing family fractions. However, there are some exceptions. “We want to help Olena’s friend and her 17-month-old baby, but her husband is unable to come at this time. She will need support. Just to fly all of the families here will cost $16,000, the amount we have already raised, so our goal is to do more for them to assist with the trauma that they are going through. We will help find some jobs where maybe perfect English isn’t necessary.” Donations are gratefully accepted for the silent auction (minimum value of $50) and the live auction (minimum value of $250). Contact Trish 780-678-9181 or Trudy 780-281-0319 for any questions about auction items. “We want to make the transition easier for the
people. It takes a couple of weeks to get through the paperwork of visas and work permits. We should have more people here in two to three weeks,” added Becky. “We have had overwhelming success and positive support from the community. We are grateful for the support. We have enough household items to furnish at least three households.” That positive support can come from anywhere. The Grade 3 class from Daysland Elementary School collected Coins for Ukraine and raised $791.65. You can donate household items by calling the Rotary Club of Camrose at 780-678-4959. If, for some reason, the items can’t be used by the incoming families from Ukraine, they will be made available to other refugees or people who may need them within the community. They may also be sold at a Messiah Lutheran Church garage sale to generate funds for the project. Edmonton churches are also trying to bring Ukraine refugees over, so they may be needed for other families within Alberta. “We have specifically committed to helping the four families, but we want to help as many people as we are able, and that depends on the amount of money that we can raise for the project. We know of other families who are coming to Camrose through different avenues, mostly private arrangements, but want to be poised to help them if we can,” shared Becky. Tickets for the event are available at the Bailey Box Office.

This is Ben.
Moments that are worth a lifetime By Lori Larsen
It’s been almost three years since I have traveled to see my mother who lives in Ontario. With COVID, I have been hesitant to travel, especially around crowds, and my mother is elderly so there was that worry. I got to thinking, it is only three years, when I realized exactly what three years means to someone who will be 87. It’s a lifetime. I wondered how I might feel if my own children were a further distance from me and they said, “It’s only been three years, Mom.” Suffice it to say, I just booked a flight to go back home to visit her. I will spend time sitting and listening to her talk about her days growing up. About boating near my grandparents’ home with her dog, slowly following loons around the lake.
About her prom date and the huge corsage he bought her. About the gorgeous yellow dress she wore to her first job at the bank. At some point, we will reminisce about all the shenanigans me and my three siblings got into and I will no doubt apologize through fits of laughter. Other moments will be filled with silence as we sit on her porch looking over her beautiful little garden that she still tends. Eight days will pass by quickly and I will be heading home again. The worry of crowded airports is a minor glitch in a world where time passes too fast. On May 8, take the time, whether it is a phone call, an email, or a visit if you are lucky enough to live close, to make a difference in a mother’s life. That moment is worth a lifetime.
Ben is sixteen. Ben is a good kid. He works part time. He plays sports. He gets decent grades in school. Ben doesn’t read The Booster. Yet. But he will. Just give him a few more years.
Ben is a future Booster reader. Ben still has a lot to learn – about life and about his community. Right now, he has other priorities. His parents and grandparents watch out for Ben and teach Ben, too. (He just doesn’t realize he’s still learning from them.) They tell him about job opportunities, community events, local business sales and other cool things they’ve seen in The Booster. Or, for that matter, on Camrose NOW! At around age 20, Ben will develop a keen interest in his community, in local businesses and The Booster, too. Stats have backed this up – for about 60 years!
Be like Ben. THANKS FOR ENJOYING THE HOME TEAM PAPER!

Old Donalda fire truck repurposed By Murray Green
Wendall Taylor owns a 1957 GMC 9900 truck that served on the Donalda Fire Department for many years. “The truck belonged to a person on the edge of town who wanted to get it running again. I asked if I could get it running for him and I ended up trading another truck for it,” shared Wendall. “The water tank was rusted out, the water pumper was seized, so it wasn’t practical to restore it as a fire truck. I wanted to do something with it, so I shortened the frame by three feet and hand built a pick-up box,” explained Wendall. The Chevrolet Task Force was Chevrolet’s successor to the Advance Design series. The Task Force Series ran from late 1955 (second series) through 1959. At GMC dealers, it was called the Blue Chip Series. “The truck still had a 322 Buick engine in it and that is what it came with. Canadian GMCs received Buick engines and American GMCs had Pontiac engines at that time. It has 14,000 original miles on it. The truck has a five-speed transmission with a single axle,” shared Wendall. The truck was built to fight fires, not win street races. “I tried to keep it as original as I could except for

shortening it and building the box. The truck even has its original paint. It has the original glass and the interior is still all original,” said Wendall.
FUN FACTS
1957 was the only year for a more open grille. The hood is flatter with two spears on top, similar to the 1957 Bel Air. Fender emblems are still above the fender line, but were oval-shaped, as opposed to previous versions in script. The larger 322 cubic inch (5.3 L) engine was the original Nailhead, used by Buick from 1953 through 1956 in the Roadmaster, Super and Century models, and the Special in 1956. The 322 engine was also used in the 1956 through 1957 10,000-Series conventional-cab Chevrolet heavy duty trucks labeled as the Loadmaster. Buick’s second variation of the nicknamed Nailhead was produced from 1957 to 1966, and the Fireball name was no longer used starting in 1958. Also in 1957, GMC introduced its model line known as the GMC Blue Chip Money-Maker line, which attracted more consumers to the brand. The 1955-57 truck line had intentionally been designed to give drivers the finest and best-looking trucks in the trucking business. GMC’s product line of ’57 also offered fresh styling features such as a wraparound rear window and panoramic windshield with a deep center steering wheel, in addition to T-3 headlamps as added safety features.
“I’m not finished with it, and I do plan to finish the rest of the truck. I want to install the floor in the box. I need to ensure it is road worthy again and finish the body a little better,” he added. “I want to hook up the stacks and put some guards on and just overall clean it up. The truck was so unique that I hated to see it go to waste. You don’t see very many old trucks like this with only 14,000 miles on them. If it would have just sat in the field for 10 or 15 more years, the truck would have been junk and nothing left of it,” Wendall said. The 1955 second series offered standard options and add-ons such as 12-volt electrical systems, Chevrolet’s first V8 engine since the 1917 288 cubic inch (4.7 L) Chevrolet Series D, and Fleetside beds in 1958. Commercial trucks and various other heavy duty models were available. “The truck was last used as a fire truck in 1999,
which was well beyond its life as a fire truck. It was running up until that point. Most of these trucks only had six-cylinder engines in them, so the larger motor was rare for that time. In
1957, Chevrolet had just come out with a 283 motor and everything else was a six-cylinder. It was the big engine at the time, so it was perfect for a fire truck,” shared Wendall.

Sharon Lorraine Holt
Sharon was born in Edmonton, AB, to Carol and Harold Enfield, the eldest of three children, on February 14, 1955. She grew up on a ranger station at Nojack, AB, with some time also spent in Kananaskis and Whitecourt, AB. She graduated from Niton Central School in 1973 and, after graduation, she lived a short time in Edmonton and on the family farm just west of Bittern Lake. In 1975, she met the love of her life, Ron Holt, and they married on August 29, 1975. Daughter Tara was born in July 1977, and son David was born in April 1981. She held various jobs throughout her life, including working at the Camrose Canadian, but her most prized job was as a wife and mother. In her later years, she earned her Level 1 Childcare Certificate and joined her daughter at the Regional Rural Children’s Center in Bawlf for the Bawlf Playschool Society, and went to work for the Out of School program where she remained until her passing. She loved her job and enjoyed the shenanigans of the various children who passed through the program over the last eight to nine years. She had many dear friends over the years, some of whom became family to her, many of whom she took under her wing as her own kids. Many of the younger generation called her Grandma of which she took obvious pride. She was deeply loved and will be missed by many.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the loss of Doug Brown of Beaumont, AB on the morning of Monday, April 25, 2022. He was taken from us far too soon after a battle with cancer. Doug was born on October 26, 1955 in Edmonton and grew up in Camrose. He was known as Car-Guy to friends and Grandaddio to his grandchildren. Doug kept a small social circle and was seen as a quiet man. He was very protective of his family. To those who knew him well and were lucky enough to be close to him, he was incredibly generous and kind. He would do anything to help someone in need, regardless of the cost to himself. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Rosalie; daughter Shannon (Greg) Kennedy; his two grandchildren Addison and Greyson; son Jesse; mother Peggy; and sister Patti Nichols. Doug was predeceased by his father Brian Brown, and brother Kenton Brown. A Celebration of Doug will be held May 7, 2022. Open house at our residence from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

McCaffery, Margaret “Margie”
1944 ~ 2022 Words cannot express what a shock death is – be it expected or unexpected… Following many years of suffering silently, Margie McCaffery is now at peace. Augustana Giving Day By Lori Larsen The weight of a stone is not measured by mass, but the ripple it creates in the pond. On Tuesday, May 10, the University of Alberta Augustana Campus will be making history with the first ever Giving Day, a day set aside to honour the ripple effect of generosity and giving. This particular Giving Day will prioritize fundraising for the Augustana Faculty Bursary Endowment. “Funding opportunities like the Augustana Faculty Bursary Endowment will help ensure deserving students who demonstrate financial need don’t miss their chance to make their mark on the world,” noted Augustana Faculty Office of Advancement assistant director, development, Bree Urkow. “By supporting this bursary today, you support the innovators and thinkers of tomorrow.” In a community such as Camrose, where generosity knows no bounds, organizations and members of the community reciprocate a circle of kindness and play a vital role in assisting others with their pledges of support. One such generous member of the community, Wes Campbell, president and GM of Campbell-McLennan, recognized not only the importance of giving where he can, but
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster
University of Alberta Augustana Campus Giving Day (May 10) honours the generosity of community donors such as Wes Campbell, pictured on the left, with Augustana dean Demetres Tryphonopoulos, right. encouraging others to do the same. “My team and I are inspired to the idea of giving a gift to an Augustana student/ students to achieve their goals and allow him/her to reach the dreams they believe in.” Wes commended the excel-
lent work done by Urkow and Augustana dean Demetres Tryphonopoulos in attaining donors, such as himself, and for always searching out ways to assist Augustana Campus students to travel closer to their dreams.
“If we can support in a manner of need to help pay for tuition, text books, rent, food– we have accomplished what Giving Day signifies.” Gifts on Giving Day will help students overcome economic barriers and make post-
secondary education a realistic option. Funds from the Augustana Faculty Bursary Endowment will support students in their educational pursuits, promoting wider perspectives at post-secondary institutions and furthering innovative solutions for tomorrow. “With every challenge comes an opportunity to succeed,” said dean Tryphonopoulos. “Academic success begins with gaining access to education in the first place. “Donor-based funding supports students in their efforts to overcome those financial obstacles that may make it difficult for them to come or stay at our institution. Through the Augustana Faculty Bursary Endowment, students can earn an education, but also inspire success in others. “Mr. Campbell’s generosity has both a practical but also a symbolic meaning. His contribution will help students in real time and with real needs, and will also inspire others to follow his example. I am very grateful to Mr. Campbell and to all those donors whose generosity makes a difference at Augustana.” For more information on Augustana’s part of U of A Giving Day or donating, visit the website at uabgive.ca/ augustanagivingday.
Sahakarini to hold online auction By Murray Green
As part of this year’s Loaves and Fishes Reimagined, Sahakarini is hosting an online auction running from 6 p.m. on May 23 to June 6 at 6 p.m., with all of the proceeds going towards the projects that they support worldwide. “We have had some wonderful things donated. We have never tried this before, hopefully this is successful. On May 28, we are holding our second bottle drive in the Quilting From the Heart parking lot. We are trying new ways to fund our programs,” explained Sahakarini president Litsa Tryphonopoulos. The link for the auction is www.facebook.com/ groups/937814223586757. The winners of the auction items will be announced at the AGM on June 6 at 7 p.m. To access the auction, visit the Facebook page @Sahakarini or the website sahakarini.org. The annual general meeting will be held on June 6 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. The guest speaker will be John PattisonWilliams, who will talk about Hope in the Midst of Despair: Navigating the challenges of surging global food prices in a changing world. Three awards will be announced to honour individuals in the areas of

Founder/Builder, Community Volunteer and Donors. The awards, a first for Sahakarini, will be presented in the fall with the winners in attendance. “We will sharing our videos on our webpage that show the process of our projects that we are involved with. We want to keep up with bids, so people can see what the last bid was for the items,” added Litsa.
“We are also encouraging people to have a garage sale and donate the proceeds to Sahakarini. They will get a tax receipt. People can also make a donation in name of someone else for Christmas, birthdays and any other celebration. We encourage people to be creative.” You can still take a walk in the famous sandals. You can book a week
of walking with the Sahakarini sandals. As part of the 2021-22 Loaves and Fishes Reimagined, Camrosians are invited to take these well-storied sandals along with them on their own travels. “Whether it be to an exotic location or your backyard, you can document your travels with some photos to share on social media. Suggested donation for each weekly rental is $100 and can arranged through Rajan or Margaret Rathnavalu (rajan.rathnavalu@ yahoo.ca or megandrath@ yahoo.ca),” said Litse. Each year, Sahakarini supports a number of projects, which range from one or more years in duration. Annual budget allocations are made to finish paying for a project’s completion, its continuation, or its commencement. Currently, the projects being supported include Childcare Centre’s Renovations and Upgrades project–Columbia, Two Sand Dam projects–Kenya, Medical Clinic project– Nepal, Wheel Chair project–Mexico, and Educational Support of Indigenous Youth–India. “Often people want to be part of a project and will fund it in entirety or part of it. Sometimes we match the donation to fund a project. They want to know what project they are supporting,” added vice presi-
dent Michael Mucz. “We like projects that benefit the community, students, women and things that will have a lasting benefit. We have an account of each project to ensure the money is going to what it was intended for.” In all cases, Sahakarini insures that its current financial resources are able to cover current project commitments before any new or additional projects are added. “We are excited to have two foreign Augustana students on our board. They make us aware of a different prospective. We are making an effort to have the outgoing students help us recruit some incoming members,” said Litse. The Sahakarini board consists of president Litsa Tryphonopoulos, vice president Michael Mucz, treasurer Don Rebus, secretary Carolyn Andersen, directors Brian Nelson, Varghese Manaloor, Naomi Pattison-Williams, Laurie Moffitt-Barr, Sarah Skinner, Joel Usiri and Josiah Afriyie. “We encourage young people to get involved in worldly projects through Sahakarini,” said Michael. “Volunteering is like a donation and every donation helps,” shared Litse.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

BRCF assists schizophrenia society By Lori Larsen
The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta. The grant is from income from the Citizen Advocacy Fund and the Foundation’s Community Funds. The grant will provide assistance for the Peer Support Program in Camrose. The program offers individual and group support for individuals experiencing or affected by schizophrenia. “We are very grateful for the Battle River Community Foundation funding which, for many years, has been instrumental in helping us offer this valuable program,” remarked Schizophrenia Society of Alberta Camrose office program director Anthony Holler. The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta has been offering programs throughout Alberta for those living with schizophrenia and their family members for over 40 years. “The Camrose Peer Support Group formed over 15 years ago and has been going strong ever since,” added Holler, noting that one in 100 people live with this treatable brain disorder, and having the support of their peers is proven to be a vital part of their recovery journey
This Mother’s Day, I would like a very cold hotel room, black-out curtains, Net ix and no other human being present. Thank you in advance.
Motherhood is really about accepting the fact that you will be permanently worried for the rest of your life.
I love being a sports mom. Unless it’s cold. Or raining. Or too hot. Or really early in the morning. Or when there’s no bathroom. Or when it’s far away. So basically, I love being a sports mom 3% of the time. I’m always surprised when heavily tattooed couples have a baby and it comes out blank.

alongside medication and other therapies. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations such as this in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available
annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $7,900,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region. Central Agencies Realty Home of the Week
Starter or investment home
By Lori Larsen
Are you thinking about an investment property or are you just starting out? With plenty of room, including four bedrooms and two bathrooms, this bungalow located near playgrounds, schools and downtown shops and services is a great option. As you enter the home, you will immediately notice upgrades including flooring and subtle, classic paint colours. The main floor living room features a huge front window that is perfect for setting up a seating arrangement. A pass-through window to the kitchen makes serving up guests or keeping an eye on the children so easy. The kitchen decor blends nicely, with warm tones of brown on newer counter tops and backsplash tiles. There are lots of cabinets and a pantry for tons of storage and plenty of room to move around while preparing meals.
Two bedrooms and a four-piece nicely upgraded bathroom are situated on the main floor. More living space in the basement, including a large family room, two spacious bedrooms and a four-piece bathroom, means the family can have lots of room to spread out or the possibility of a roommate to help pay the mortgage. Head out to the good-sized backyard where you can enjoy your own outdoor space and back alley access to the 24’ x 26’ garage and RV parking options. With so many different opportunities, this home located at 5228-47 Street is definitely worth checking out and is comfortably priced for starter budgets at $239,900. My kid: “Grandma would say yes.” Me: “Well, it sounds like my mom is cooler than yours!”
A truck loaded with thousands of copies of MerriamWebster’s Thesaurus spilled its cargo leaving Camrose heading down Highway 13. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, stupe ed, confused, shocked, rattled, paralyzed, dazed, bewildered, surprised, dumbfounded, abbergasted, confounded, astonished and numbed. A weasel walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Wow, I’ve never served a weasel before. What can I get you?” “Pop,” goes the weasel.
Gas prices are so high I just saw Dolly Parton carpooling with Jolene.
Children are like pancakes. The rst one is always a bit weird.
Two hillbillies were sipping moonshine on the front porch when a truck went past loaded up with rolls of sod. “I’m a-gonna do that when I win that there lottery,” announced Hillbilly #1. “Do wut?” asked Hillbilly #2. “Send my lawn out to git mowed.” The biggest joke on mankind is that computers have started asking humans to prove that they aren’t a robot. My husband would take a bullet for me, but he’d also criticize the way I drove him to the hospital afterward. What do you call a cow that just had a baby? De-calf-einated.
An angel asked God what He was doing. “I’m making Canadians,” He said. “Awww, they’re so nice,” said the angel. “Oh yeah? Watch this,” said God, as He dropped a hockey puck. I think it’s adorable they’re putting jokes on the sides of snack packages now. Like this one: “Serving size: 3 cookies.”
The ve-second rule does not apply when you have a two-second dog.
At the bank, I told the teller, “I’d like to open a joint account, please.” “Okay, with whom?” asked the teller. “Whoever has lots of money.” It’s funny how we say, “a bug hit my windshield” when we are the ones going 100 km/hour. I’ll bet the bug’s family describes it di erently.
I used to think men weren’t great communicators. Not true. They just communicate di erently. For example, my husband can tell me exactly what he had for lunch just by what he left on the counter. I went to the zoo and saw a baguette in a cage. The zookeeper said it was bread in captivity.
Every day I try to do something good in the world. Today, for example, I put on deodorant.

My dad was bragging about his new hearing aid. “State of the art!” he said, “It cost me a fortune.” I asked, “Awesome! What type is it?” He said, “Two thirty.”
