“When operating an OHV on public land, the vehicle must be registered, insured, have a licence plate, have a headlight and tail-light and an approved muffler,” explained Camrose County Protective Services manager/ Sergeant Mike Kuzio. “The operation of pocket bikes, mini quads, power scooters or golf carts is prohibited from operation on any roadway by Provincial legislation.” In accordance with the Traffic Safety Act, Section 120(2), persons are prohibited from operating offhighway vehicles on any portion of the highway. The highway includes the roadway surface, ditches, medians, and right-of-way up to the fenceline, as defined in the Act. Further to that, Kuzio said that when operating an OHV on public lands, the operators must follow all traffic safety laws and rules of the road and abide by all traffic safety devices. On a side note, Kuzio explained that mobility aids (electric scooter/wheelchairs) are allowed on all roadways, and laws which affect pedestrians also apply to mobility aids. • Never operate an OHV when using alcohol or drugs. “Anyone operating an OHV while their ability to do so is impaired by alcohol or drugs will be charged the same as if operating any other motor vehicle,” noted Kuzio. • Prior to riding, inspect the ATV including: the brakes, liquids, tires, headlights and other safety equipment. • Familiarize yourself with of the terrain on which you are traveling, and be aware of any potential hazards. • Avoid riding during darker hours. • Follow posted signs, stay on the trails, and be aware of the weather and trail conditions. “Remember, you must obtain permission from land owners to access any private land,” said Kuzio. “Private lands do not have to be posted or fenced. If it is private, you must obtain permission.” After obtaining permission to ride on private land, remember to use respect and treat the property with the utmost care and consideration. Pack all your garbage out, do not have fires, cause as little damage or disruption to the land as possible and always leave gates and fences as you found them. Always carry a cellular phone or working two-way radio with you and notify someone of your planned travel destination, when you will be leaving, and estimated time of return. Always carry water and
