History
Former professional station agent and current volunteer at Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park, Keith Scott, takes a break from his important responsibilities, while being treated to a cup of tea from summer student worker, Emma Hutchinson.
Summer is not complete without an educational and fun visit to a Canadian Northern Society site in Meeting Creek, Big Valley or right here in Camrose. Beautifully preserved, the Camrose depot, built in 1911, forms the centrepiece for Camrose Railway Park. Head back to the glorious period of passenger rail travel as you wander the pristine grounds and tour the various displays of local railway heritage.

Celebrate local food week By Murray Green
The Food Artisans of Camrose County (FACC) launched Local Food Week with a presentation to Camrose County council and City of Camrose council on August 4. Reeve Cindy Trautman, Mayor PJ Stasko signed a declaration for Local Food Week to be August 14 to 20 with Food Artisans chair Edith Tabler as a witness. Local Food Week in Alberta is also August 14 to 20. In 2016, local food sales (Farmers’ Markets, Farm Retail and restaurants serving local food) exceeded $1.5 billion in Alberta. About 23 per cent of households chose restaurants that use Alberta ingredients; 36 per cent households purchase at farm retail; and 78 per cent households purchase at
farmers’ markets. FACC is a collective of local growers, producers and processors in County and City of Camrose. It is presently supported by Camrose County. They encourage everyone to support our local producers. There are 53 Food Artisans listed for 2022; 34 per cent of Food Artisans are located in the City of Camrose, but they are financially and in-kind supported by Camrose County; three out of the five Food Artisan Farmers’ Markets are located in the City of Camrose. Shop at the five Alberta Approved farmers’ markets in the County–Thursday at the Rose City market in Duggan Mall or the Downtown Market on Main Street; Friday at Bashaw and Miquelon Lake; or Saturday at the Camrose and
District Market at the Duggan Mall. Since COVID-19, there is a growing interest in consumers to support and shop from local food producers, growers and processors. A complete list is available on the county website. Since 2021, 13 different Community Service Learning Projects have been completed with six different Food Artisans. Valuable connections have been made with Augustana Campus and students. A range of projects have been completed including: pivoting a sustainable small business, why you should consider farming, sustainable stories/newsletter and the Camrose Urban Farm Project. You can also visit a farm shop, U-pick or online from some of the farms.

Mirrored back These August summer days, it’s a delight to have Mirror Lake in the centre of Camrose. When I was a little girl growing up in Camrose, the jewel now called Mirror Lake was the dam–dark dirty water that accumulated when Stoney Creek was dammed up. I’m old enough to remember when the town and then the City of Camrose made decisions to keep the area around Stoney Creek and the dam as park. This was not an easy sell. It was hard to imagine anything other than murky water and scruffy brush in the centre of town. It took vision to convince others that things like “nature” and “park” were worth more to the town or city than selling the land for “development”. *** I thought of all that as I read an article about the impact of being in nature. I have noticed for a long time that going for even a short walk outside improves my mood. If the walk includes some time in nature–or at least trees–I feel better yet. Turns out that’s true for most people. The article says that, besides the physical benefits of fresh air and greenery, being in nature has mental benefits too. A growing body of research tells us that… …walking in nature lowers harmful mental rumination– that is, going over and over bad feelings from the past, which is a risk factor for depression. …kids who go to schools with more greenery perform better on tests that require the ability to think. …seeing photos of greenery helps the ability to solve hard mental tasks. In short, research proves what some people have known their whole lives. Being in nature helps you feel better and even helps you think better. *** Back to Camrose and the jewel that is Mirror Lake. How fortunate that–long before it was fashionable–visionary councillors and administrators thought it was important to keep that area for park. They probably didn’t know they were helping us mentally too! I remember when the area was kept somewhat natural but with some walking trails. Gradually, year by year, the trails were extended. That created more and more places where people could enjoy walking–or running, cycling or skiing. Some of my favourite memories are of my mom and me walking the paths around Mirror Lake. At the Bill Fowler Centre on Mirror Lake, it always delights me when I see children playing and families enjoying ice cream. Other people are sitting on the benches just enjoying watching the water and ducks and geese and maybe the odd muskrat swimming by. *** The article I read pointed out something else. If a natural scene has litter–even a small amount–that greatly reduces the positive effect of being in nature. Even a tiny amount of litter triggers much reduction in how “restorative” the scene is. Litter made research participants feel “unhappy and less calm”. Litter is not just bad for the environment; it’s bad for us too. *** I know people from the east country who choose to come to Camrose–or stop in Camrose on their way to Edmonton–because they like heading west to that place on Highway 13 where the view of Mirror Lake opens up. If it happens to be when sunset is reflected in the water, that’s even better. Every time I have that moment, I say a mental “thank you” to the far-seeing people who looked at what was then ugly and could imagine beauty. Perhaps when we perceive beauty, it is mirrored back to us. May we all have that kind of eyes. *** I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

We thank you for your interest in this feature and encourage your comments. No simple solutions
We live in a complex, dynamic world. That means our problems, which are many, are usually complex and have no simple solutions. We also claim to live in a democracy where most of the voters want simple and usually impossible solutions, and so elect representatives who promise that they have those simple solutions. This has been the case throughout history, leading historians to say that “…we humans learn only that we learn nothing from history!” If we look at the technology available to us today, we might try to dispute that claim. I would suggest that the lack of learning from our history applies largely to most people when they are fearful, like now. All of us are facing multiple societal problems including global warming, running out of resources, political incompetence, potential for nuclear war and other existential dangers, (at least from our point of view). History tells us that when this happens most of us panic and our brain shuts down and we become the victims of anyone who claims they have the answer, no matter how improbable. You have the evidence of the past 50 years. Our political masters have made the most outrageous claims. The more things got worse, almost always by following the improbable solutions recommended by our politicians, the more they tried to blame “the other,” those who had a different skin color or religion or immigrants, until even scientists and experts in various fields were blamed for everything per-
ceived as wrong. How has that worked out? Imperfect as it was, I grew up in a period of relative sanity. I grew up in a period where a child from a poor family could get a good education and where my ill father could get medical care without going bankrupt. I grew up in a society where even when the politicians ruled in favour of the wealthy, enough wealth was shared with the general population that we believed the future would be even better. Now the US politicians don’t even pretend to care what their citizen’s want and are moving toward fascism and half the population seems to be supporting them. If the US fails we will not be far behind. We are still a nominal democracy. We still can vote. But for how long? If we keep voting for the same people who brought us to this impasse, then we deserve the coming collapse. Perhaps there is still time to make your vote count. In my opinion we need to change our whole system, but that can’t happen in this political climate. However we can change the players and that is not a bad first step. Harry Gaede, Camrose Disappointing leader
Many times I have been disappointed in our MP Damien Kurek. Never more than now that he has expressed his support for Pierre Poilievre to be the next leader of the Conservatives. Now that it is obvious that Poilievre will be the next CPC leader, it may be advantageous personally for Mr. Kurek to jump on the Poilievre bandwagon, but
CHASE THE ACE
where are Mr. Kurek’s principles? Mr. Kurek states that “it is key that Conservatives stay united and put egos and petty personal ambitions aside.” Then why support Poilievre, who refused to take part in the August 3 debate and took the opportunity to trash his own party and the other leadership candidates in the process. Poilievre’s main policy seems to be that if you don’t agree with me I will fight with you, even if you are part of my own party. It would appear that for Mr. Poilievre, it is all about his ego. His petty personal ambitions always come first. If Mr. Kurek really cared about unity, Poilievre is the last person he would support. Mr Kurek says that Poilievre is “pragmatic and reasonable.” What? Like when Poilievre says that to combat inflation he would fire the governor of the Bank of Canada and that people should buy cryptocurrency. Anyone who followed that advice would have lost their shirts by now. But this is what I really don’t understand. Poilievre has no plan for dealing with the growing threat of climate change. Scientists and economists have made it very clear that to have a healthy and prosperous future, we must have a plan to deal with the transition that climate change is forcing on us. But from Mr. Poilievre, there is zero leadership. Nothing. Mr. Kurek understands this. So, why is Mr. Kurek willing to put his own short-term political ambitions ahead of his children’s future? Rob Hill, Camrose

With the goal of preserving and showcasing some of the Bailey Theatre history, the Bailey Society, through a federal government grant program, hired summer employee Heather Barach, who began the work of sifting through, documenting and preserving some of the Bailey Theatre’s history in the beginning of June. Heather is a recent graduate of the University of Alberta with a major in environmental studies. She previously worked in the Alix Wagon Wheel Museum during the summer of 2019. “I’ve always been interested in history, specifically old theatres, and I have wanted Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Above: Bailey Theatre to learn more about Camrose,” summer employee said Heather. and Thursdays from 2 until 4 p.m., but also by appointment. The tours that Heather has conducted thus far have taken around 15 minutes, however, they will vary in time in accordance to the level of interest of the attendees. During an impromptu tour led by Heather and David, I was able to discover for myself exactly what the two of them were so excited about. We snaked through a maze of hallways on the lower level
leading to the theatre’s very own Green Room that houses guests and performers; dressing rooms featuring ornate dressing tables complete with makeup mirrors; a rehearsal hall that is exact measurements of the actual theatre stage; rooms that once housed doctor’s offices and are now used for storage or other theatre purposes; a large storage room where tables and chairs are stored between dinner theatres; staircases leading to stage left and stage right joined by a wide hallway that leads off into more dressing rooms; a room that houses state-of-the-art technology for the stage and theatre itself; and offices, including Heather’s, where she painstakingly goes through every item, each with the same exu-
berance as the one before. With a pause in Heather’s office, the tour took on a heightened excitement as she pulled out old ledgers handwritten by Stan Bailey himself. She carefully went through a stack of beautifully coloured lobby posters dating back years, many of which featured Canadian films and performers, gracefully showing their age on patinaed paper. Around each corner, there are other pieces of history to bestow. One room contains a piece of the original wall peeled back during renovations revealing signatures, renderings and comments from vaudeville performers which have been preserved by the Bailey Society as a “Window Into the Past”. Upstairs in the theatre itself, one cannot help but feel transported back to its glory days, renovated and maintained to its original state, including a historic brick wall feature and wood flooring constructed of Douglas fir from Victoria to look like the original flooring. The lighting is low and moody and a stunning curved balcony perches above the main floor offering guests another unique theatre experience. While the past is preserved in appearance, the mechanics of the Bailey Theatre continue to move forward with state-of-the-art lighting, sound and rigging options. “As the oldest film and live performance theatre in Western Canada, the Bailey Theatre is the number one destination for tourists coming to Camrose,” explained David. “People love theatres and we are one they can come into, explore and see a show; it is not just a facade.” David said that there are a lot of people who come through the front doors of the Bailey only to be surprised by the fact that it is actually a beautiful historic theatre. “Then they are really interested and want to know more. So that is why we need to have the exhibits up so guests can experience them. “David Lyseng just recently donated a huge picture of Stan Bailey, and the family has commissioned a plaque about Stan’s contribution to the theatre so they can read the history of Stan Bailey.” For more information on the Bailey Theatre tours or events, visit the Bailey Theatre website at www.baileytheatre.com or telephone 780-672-5510. For more information on the history of the Bailey, visit baileytheatre.com/our-story. For over a century, the Bailey Theatre (David Theatre/Camrose Opera House) has graced Main Street, its doors welcoming guests to a variety of entertainment that now includes a glimpse into the past.

Council hears Land Use Bylaw update By Lori Larsen
During the City of Camrose Committee of Whole meeting held on August 2, Planning department manager Aaron Leckie along with David Schoor from ISL Engineering, presented the updated Land Use Bylaw to council. According to Schoor a Land Use Bylaw serves the following purposes: divides the City into land use districts; prescribes the uses of lands or buildings; provides details to evaluate applications; provides notification; provides development standards; creates a method for making decisions and allows for conditions of approval. “The LUB was comprehensively reviewed in 2015, and in the seven years since the Planning Department and council have updated the LUB with annual amendments as needed,” explained Schoor. “On one end of the scale you have had a comprehensive review in 2015 and annually you are making updates; we were making a midscale review of the LUB and in doing that we looked at 15 specific items within the LUB.” Schoor said the primary purpose of the project was to ensure that council, MPAC (Municipal Planning Advisory Committee), administration, developers and builders and public have a continued trust in the LUB. “Our goal throughout the project was to ensure we developed clear and concise regulations that are easy to interpret. Ultimately council can update, revise or approve the document as they see fit.” Schoor said the LUB project update involved four phases including a technical review; bylaw preparation; bylaw review; and adoption. “When the project began in February and March our first priority was to make sure the rules for Outdoor Dining and Temporary Patios were in place for the upcoming patio season,” which he said was accomplished by spring and include a review of the existing policy, best practices, other municipal policies and regulations and feedback from MPAC. Schoor reported that there were no public complaints filed regarding the Outdoor Dining and Temporary Patio rules and, in fact, they received many positive comments. The 15 other items reviewed during the project included: Municipal Government Act (MGA) consistency; commercial and industrial uses; temporary structures; signage; amendment applications; airport uses and regulations; subdivision standards in

residential districts; home based businesses; parking requirements; demolition permits; urban hens; outdoor wood burning saunas; live work spaces; detached secondary suites and the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) implementation. “It represents almost every type of development that could occur in Camrose,” said Schoor. He said they focused on a number of different items including urban hens. “Keeping of hens has become increasingly popular in urban areas. Aaron’s team has reviewed many requests about urban hens over the last few years. Today, in Camrose, urban hens or the raising of animals for agriculture purposes is only allowed on an urban reserve area which is located outside the developed area of Camrose. The current LUB presented to council on August 2 included the following regulations regarding urban hens: keeping of up to three hens (prohibited roosters); discretionary use in low density residential districts (R1, R2, MH and SRD); restricted to the rear yard of single detached dwellings and registration at the Government of Alberta website. Other areas of focus regarding the updated LUB discussed during the August 2 meeting included: Demolition Permits; Live/ Work Units; Commercial and Industrial Districts; Detached Secondary Suites and the development of a DC-H Direct Control (Heritage) District. For complete details on the key changes to these areas visit the City of Camrose website at visit www. ourcamrose.ca/land-use-bylaw-update. With regards to engagement throughout the project Schoor said the work involved three phases. Phase one involved a workshop with MPAC in March, phase two conducted stakeholders interviews with representatives from the Augustana neighbourhoods and home builders and phase three involved an online survey and in-person open house. The open house occurred on June 16 at the Camrose Recreation Centre with 20 people in total attending. The results of the online

survey (26 respondents) indicated the following: • 73 per cent of respondents were strongly or somewhat in support of detached secondary suites proposed changes in the LUB. • 69 per cent of respondents were strongly or somewhat in support of urban hen proposed changes to the LUB. • 57 per cent of respondents were strongly or somewhat in support of demolition permit proposed changes in the LUB. • 61 per cent of respondents were strongly or somewhat in support of live-work units proposed changes in the LUB. • and 54 per cent of respondents were strongly or somewhat in support of future non-airport uses at the Camrose Airport proposed changes in the LUB. Councillor David Francoeur asked how administration intends on bringing the 15 regulations under review to council next meeting. “Are they going to be dealt with individually or is it going to be as a whole.” Leckie said the intent was to bring forward on August 15, a recommendation for council to give first reading to the bylaw and council would receive a redline version of the Bylaw that would show all of the changes. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd highlighted that fact that the Bylaw has been through various venues and before council for several months. “I appreciate that when it is presented with numerous changes there is a lot to go through but it is not the first time that most of council has seen them.” Leckie indicated that this is the first time that a few council members have seen the changes. After discussion council received the report for information. The bylaw will come back to the August 15 Committee of Whole meeting, allowing all council members an opportunity to read over the red-line version and allow for further explanation should council require it, then bring the bylaw back for first reading to the September 6 regular council meeting.

Al hasn’t put a lot of work into the car as of yet. “I put a new radio in it because it didn’t work” laughed Al. “I changed out the Edelbrock intake with a more standard one. I haven’t done a lot to it. It was in pretty good shape when I bought the car.” In the GM brands hierarchy, Buick was surpassed in luxury and comfort appointments only by Cadillac, which did not produce performance models. “The car has a 455 motor and a 400 transmission. It is a basic stock 455 engine. My son had a 1970 Buick and he accidentally sold it,” Al revealed. “So, we went together to buy this car to replace it. I have since taken over the car, possession of the Buick and it is a great, solid car.” As a result, the Buick GS series were the most

opulently equipped GM sport models of their era. The Gran Sport performance enhancements on all Buick products during this era sought to affirm Buick’s tradition of producing powerful and comfortable products going
FUN FACTS
The 400 was replaced for 1970 with the Buick 455 cubic inch (7.5 L) V8 engine, used in the GS 455. The base model was rated at 350 horsepower at 2,800 rpm of torque. In the optional Stage 1 trim equipped with a single four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor was rated at 360 horsepower. The Stage 1 engine option used cylinder heads that, while using raw castings of the same pattern as all of the other Buick 455s sharing the same model year, were machined differently in order to accept larger valves (2.13” intake and 1.755” exhaust), and to produce smaller compression chambers for increased static compression ratio. While powerful in production form, the Buick 455 (including Stage 1) engines had problematic engine blocks. All used two bolt main bearing caps; the oiling system was undersized for high-rpm use (including Stage 1 engines) and thin walls in the lifter valleys promoted cracking. During 1971 and 1972, the GSX package became an option that was available on any Gran Sport. Production dropped in 1971 to only 124 and again to 44 in 1972.
back to the 1930s. “The car really handles nice, like the old days. It rides well and when you put your foot down, it gets up and goes. The car is nice and solid still,” added Al. “The car is pretty much original, the only thing different was the intake. I want to keep it original as much as possible. I changed the fin on the back end. I have one downstairs that I have to put on yet. Other than that, I’m going to leave her the way she sits,” continued Al. The Gran Sport sought to identify cars that were fun to drive with a luxury approach. “The original owner that first bought this car used it to drag race. It is not a numbers matching block, but is the next thing to it. It is a 1971 block, but actually has 1970 heads on it for better flow. If your engine is blown within the first year of warranty, you get a brand
new engine. That is what happened here. Otherwise it is pretty much factory,” explained son Trent. “It is hard to find GS’s in Canada, that is why this one came out of the States. Canadian cars had
a 12-volt rear end instead of 10, that is how you can tell the difference. Only GS received the 12-volt system for the winters we have here in Canada,” Trent added.

Cougars end baseball season in Sherwood Park By Murray Green
The Camrose Cougars U18 team played three games in Sherwood Park at Tier 1 provincials on July 29 to 31. Unfortunately, Camrose lost its first two games to knock them out of contention of the medal round. In the first contest, the Calgary Black Bucks squeezed out a 6-5 win. Eric Elines took the loss for Camrose by going two innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out two. However, Elines went three-for-three at the plate to lead Camrose in hits. Reading University grads By Lori Larsen
On July 29 at 11 a.m., 40 young graduates of Reading University (Camrose campus) received their Certificates of Achievement in a ceremony held at École Camrose Composite High School. Family, friends, guests and teaching staff joined the students in celebration of their success. The Reading University four-week summer program is a community leadership initiative of the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF), intended to increase the literacy skills of children in Grades 2 and 3 who are not yet reading at grade level. Partnering with BRCF was Battle River School Division (BRSD) and generous financial donors, all with a collective goal to provide the students identified as needing some extra help, to bring their reading up to grade level with this wonderful opportunity. Throughout the month of July, Reading University students received one-onone teaching from BRSD teachers Coleman Miller, Sydney Cava, Jessica Ng and Laureen Sandin and were also given opportunities to take part in fun and educational field trips and excursions aimed at broadening the student’s experience and enhancing learning. On behalf of Battle River Community Foundation, BRCF ambassador emeritus Blain Fowler thanked the partners, donors, teachers and parents for helping to provide this crucial opportunity for these students. “Your attendance indicates strong support for our mission of strengthening the literacy skills of our youth,” remarked Fowler. In explaining the threestep process of Reading University, Fowler said the first step was to identify the need. “Studies revealed that in the first three grades, students learn to read. In subsequent years, and for the rest of their lives, they read to learn.” He went on to explain that Grade Three is a crossroads for students and that if they are not reading near grade level by that time, they begin to fall further and further behind, and by grade five or six, they are so far behind, they may never catch up. “Our goal from the beginning (2009 when Reading University began in the Battle River area) was to reverse this situation. “The second step is to determine the best people and organizations to deal with the need.” The role of Battle River School Division is to invite appropriate students to participate in the program;
design the educational program; recruit and pay staff; provide classroom space, transportation and nutritious meals and snacks. The final step of the process involves the delivery of financial support. “The cost of providing the Reading University experience is almost $2,000 per student, or $100 per day per student,” which Fowler said is provided entirely by BRCF. “We raise our share with the help of generous donors and supportive members of the local community. Their contributions cover the salaries of the teaching staff, the cost of meals, field trips, classroom supplies and items such as backpacks, T-shirts for students, as well as a selection of books students can take home to keep.” After each student was presented with their certificate, everyone was invited to congratulate the students and enjoy a piece of cake. In an effort to ensure students wishing to participate in Reading University, who may not otherwise have been able to attend an inperson classroom setting, the organizers of Reading University offered a virtual format. The material was presented by BRSD teacher Hailey Ortman in a digital format. The 20 students participating through this format also took part in virtual field trips and a graduation ceremony was held via Zoom on July 27. For more information on the Reading University program, visit the Battle River Community Foundation website at www.brcf. ca / rea d i n g _ u n ive rs i ty. html.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Springer improves health and overall lifestyle By Murray Green
Murray Springer of Camrose is a lot healthier today than he has been in the past. Losing weight can seem intimidating, especially when you consider that one in three Canadian adults are obese and Alberta has an obesity rate of 28.8 per cent. “I found myself gaining weight and it became a problem. I knew my breathing was getting worse and doing some of the easier tasks, like going up and down stairs, in my daily life were becoming more strenuous. My energy level had depleted. Previously, I was an active person. My partner Pam invited me to attend a (weight loss) meeting with her and I went,” said Murray. Obesity can cause an array of medical conditions including heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. In addition, during our present situation with COVID-19, those that are obese are at a higher risk to contract the Coronavirus. But by committing to a healthier lifestyle, people

can achieve weight loss and overall wellness. “I liked what I saw, so I returned to a weekly basis. I wanted to improve my health. I wanted to change my life,” Springer added. Springer lost 42.8 pounds through the nonprofit Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), a non– commercial weight loss, education and support organization. Additionally, he was recently crowned TOPS Alberta King for his weight loss success, meaning he lost more weight than any other male member in the entire province and reached his goal weight. Last year, Alberta members lost a total of 6,762 pounds. Murray attributes his weight loss success to the support he received, along with portion control and regular exercise. “I need to address a tough habit to break–snacking and drinking pop before bedtime. Now, I can do what most men at my age of 70 can do. I’m wearing new clothes, my confidence level is up and I feel fantastic,” explained Springer. “It was a change in lifestyle and in

mindset. My eating habits have changed, although I still have three meals a day. Now that I have lost 46 pounds in total, I find myself more active in the community.” Velda Weisensel of Claresholm, who lost 122.75 pounds and Murray Springer of Camrose, who lost 42.8 pounds in 2021, are the Alberta Queen and King of weight loss in TOPS. Weekly meetings support with an optional weigh-in, with members then sharing challenges, successes, or goals, followed by a brief program covering a variety of health and wellness topics. “I love working in the yard, I’ve taken up golf after 12 years, I volunteer driving the train around Mirror Lake and volunteer with the Hospice Society inn grief support,” shared Murray.
“Age is catching up to me and I have a bad hip, but I walk on a regular basis and by being more active, and getting out more. I have more energy by just getting out of the house and not eating or watching television,” noted Murray. “Losing weight and being healthier is a journey. It helps if you have supportive people around you. Being positive is more successful if you have support. Even if you lose a pound a day, that could be 52 pounds in a year, or a half a pound would be 26 pounds over a year. You set a goal with a doctor. Now I try to keep in a healthy range. I can’t see myself wanting to gain weight again. My family is so proud of me, I’m a whole lot better state of mind.” To learn more about options or to find a local chapter in your area, visit www.tops.org or call 1-800-932-8677.

Summer safety tips By Murray Green
Cooling off in Alberta’s lakes, splash parks, indoor and outdoor pools is a great way to spend time with family and friends, but it is important to stay safe. People can be affected by heat in several ways, from mild to life-threatening, according to Alberta Health Services. Heat exhaustion is a loss of water and salt in the body. Symptoms include dizziness or fainting, weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, muscle cramps; thirst and less urine production, headache, rapid breathing and heart beat. The most effective way to stay healthy in the heat is to avoid going outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., typically the hottest hours of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning, go into the coolest, safest place you can find, perhaps a basement. Protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal). If possible, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts that cover skin. Drink lots of water and other non-alcoholic, noncaffeinated beverages to stay hydrated. These guidelines are particularly important for individuals who are at greater risk of suffering from a heat-related illness, such as young children, older adults and those with chronic medical conditions. Prevent water-related injuries by wearing a life jacket and make sure it fits. Before and during water activities, avoid alcohol or cannabis and any other substances that may cause impaired judgement. Swim with someone you trust. Children should be accompanied by an adult or responsible person. Be aware of fast-moving water. There are considerable safety risks with swimming in unmonitored, open bodies of water. Swimming or playing in lakes, streams or rivers can result in drowning, injuries, swimmer’s itch, rashes or diarrhea. Swim only at designated beaches that are monitored for biological, chemical and physical hazards. Look for posted signs at designated beach areas. Avoid swallowing river, stream or lake water. Prevent broken skin from directly contacting recreational water. If possible, wash your hands and rinse your body off after swimming or wading in lakes, streams or rivers.

If you serve your kids frozen pizza or chicken nuggets for dinner, you are a terrible parent. I don’t care how busy you are, find the time to microwave them. Dear Sneeze, If you’re gonna happen, happen. Don’t put a stupid look on my face and then just leave. I’m like an avocado in that I’m only pleasant for a short period of time and it’s up to you to figure out when that is. I helped my neighbour out with something this morning and she said to me, “Oh I could just marry you!” I couldn’t believe it. You do something nice for someone and they threaten to ruin your life in return. My wife: “Have the kids been acting weird today?” Me: “I don’t think it’s an act.” It’s been a strange day. First, I found a hat full of money. Then I was chased by an angry man with a guitar … Fact: Kids have two stomachs. One is the meal stomach. It’s about the size of a pea. This is why children cannot consume a full breakfast, lunch or dinner. The second stomach is the snack stomach. This stomach stretches, has an infinite amount of space and can never be filled completely. There’s a fine line between a numerator and a denominator. Only a fraction of people will find this funny.

Monday: It’s fun to cook for my husband. Today, I made angel food cake. The recipe said to beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbours were nice enough to loan me enough bowls. Tuesday: Hubby wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said to serve without dressing. So I didn’t dress. What a surprise when he brought a friend home for supper. Wednesday: A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly, but I took a bath. I can’t say it improved the rice any. Thursday: Today Hubby asked for salad again, so I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving, which is what led to him asking me why I was rolling around in the garden. Friday: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put all ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must be something wrong with the recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left. Saturday: Hubby did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday, so I did. For some reason, he keeps counting to ten. Sunday: The in-laws came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast. All I could find was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius! I put the hamburger in the oven and set the control to Roast. It still came out as hamburger, much to my disappointment. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe for my husband. If we could just get a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with Chocolate Mousse.
