Food drive held at local AMA location to assist Albertans

By Murray Green

The Camrose branch of the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) will hold a food drive from September 16 to 30. Food can be dropped off at the local AMA location.

Alberta food banks are experiencing record demand, with 116,396 visitors every month—and 38 per cent of them are children (the national average is 33 per cent). To put that last part in perspective, imagine both the Saddledome and Rogers Place filled to capacity with children, then another 6,800 children waiting outside to get in.

Nobody should have to choose between putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their family’s head. Alberta’s food banks urgently need people’s help right now.

AMA is partnering with Food Banks Alberta to collect nonperishable donations for vulnerable children and their families across the province. These community food drives will take place Sept. 16 to 30, with donations supporting local food banks.

Monthly food bank visitors in Alberta have increased by 30 per cent since 2019—the second highest spike in the country.

Since the inception of Fill Our Fleet, AMA has rallied with its members to raise $919,995 and 273,158 pounds of food for community food banks.

Everything donated goes directly to the local food bank.

The ripple effects of food insecurity touch every community, so that’s how we have to respond: as a community.

Food Banks Alberta has seen a 160 per cent increase in member food banks accessing their warehouse for additional food and resources in the past six months.

All 107 FBA member food banks have reported alarming increases in demand.
