OLMP wins volleyball Earle Berry Classic
By Murray Green
The Our Lady of Mount Pleasant (OLMP) Royals boys volleyball team captured the Earle Berry Tournament hosted by the Augustana Vikings on September 9 and 10.
OLMP edged the crosstown rivals École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS) in the opening match and then the two squads won several matches to meet again in the final championship that the Royals won.
“Last year, we had a pretty strong year, but we had a young team. This year everyone is more experienced and we want to finish our last year of high school strong,” said OLMP Grade 12 student Grayson Jarrett.
The team won zones last year and placed sixth at provincials.
“I think we can medal, get to the final this year and take it home. Last year, ÉCCHS had a strong team and beat us a few times. We wanted to send a message early that we can beat the other Camrose high school,” said Jarrett.
OLMP competes in the 2A division, while ÉCCHS is a 3A school.
“We have all grown a little bit since last year, have gotten stronger and we are looking like a solid team so far,” he added.
Jarrett plays either outside hitter or right side, depending on the strategy in that game.
“On my club team, when the score was close, I would get a lot of sets towards me and the same is here as well. I like the pressure and to be in a position to put games away. I like it on my shoulders a bit, especially when the other team is trying to take it away from us late in the game,” Jarrett explained.
“We need to get everyone on the court talking. If we lost a point, you want to cheer everyone on, support each other and stay up,” he said, as one of the leaders on the team. “We have a young core of players coming up as well and they look at what we are doing on the floor and look up to us as well,” Jarrett explained.
“We just want to set an example. We have five Grade 12 players now.”
Jarrett played club volleyball this summer and on Team Alberta to gain more valuable experience for this season.
“I went to Edmonton to play for NAVC and we ended up winning Division 1 nationals. It was a special moment for both me and my team. In the past, I played for Team Alberta U16 team and then was asked to play club volleyball. I had a really good year and then this summer, I played on Team Alberta U17 and we ended up winning the Canada Cup against Manitoba in the final in three. That was in July in Calgary. It is year-round volleyball for me. I don’t get much of a break,” Jarrett said.
Next year, he wants to make the jump to college or university volleyball. “I’m talking to quite a few schools. I’m looking at going to Ontario to play because they are a little more accepting of smaller outsides, because some only like six-foot one-and-a-half. So for the university side, that is a little undersized,” reflected Jarrett.
“In the Canada West division, they like to take guys six-foot-five and up. If I went to Ontario, I would have a better shot at receiving scholarship money,” he said.
“Our team is looking to making zones first in late November against some challenging teams. If we win that, we will be headed to provincials on November 27 in Oilfield School out by Calgary.”
OLMP has won the last six zone tournaments in volleyball. “This year, we have a new team, CACHS from the Red Deer area, who have a strong volleyball program and have been dominating the 1A division. They have won provincials almost every year, now they are moving up. We have to beat them to make it to provincials.” Murray Green, Camrose Booster
Tanner Sheets and Jared Hilgartner of the OLMP Royals block a rally in the ÉCCHS gym on September 9. OLMP captured the boys’ side of the tournament by beating the ÉCCHS Trojans in the final of the Earle Berry classic.

Dale Wayne Harder
October 2, 1970 ~ August 7, 2022
Dale Wayne Harder was born on October 2, 1970. He passed away on August 7, 2022 at the age of 51.
Dale went to Chester Ronning Shcool just down the street for Grades 1 to 6, then went off to Charlie Killam for Junior High and Camrose Composite for High School. He apprenticed for BPressure Welding at NAIT.
Being the oldest of three boys, Dale often led the way to try new adventures. Many science experiments were held in the backyard with cousin Warran as the brains behind the blow-up, crash-up, smash-up derbies. Funny, all the neighbours moved away – only one original is left. Perhaps their boys were in on the shenanigans, too.
Dale had many loves – his dogs Sasha, Bozzley and Runa. He loved all sports, skiing, quadding, ball, golf, hockey and building model airplanes. He loved to camp and would fish from dawn till dusk.
He was a good and loyal friend. Dale knew he was and is loved.
In July of this year, Dale sold his home in Beaumont to move to Calgary, looking forward to the future with joy.
Dale is survived by his best friend and companion Annie and her children Calvin, Daniel and Christy; his parents John and Signe; brother Dean, Diana and Bo; along with wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins. Dale was predeceased by younger brother Grant; nephew Cole; Grandma Olga Saugen and Grandma Agatha Harder.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Bev Swanson officiating.
Memorial donations may be given to: Educational Fund for Annie’s children by e-transfer to signeharder48@gmail.com or by cheque to Signe Harder or any ATB; or the charity of one’s choice.

God saw you getting tired, And the cure was not to be, So He wrapped you in
His loving arms, And whispered,
“Come with me.” You suffered much in silence Your spirit did not bend, You faced your pain with courage Until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us Your fight was all in vain, God took you in His loving arms And saved you from all pain. Love your family
