CFD RECRUITING

I flashed back to when my mother died. Like the queen, my mom was in her nineties when she died. Her death was not unexpected and not a tragedy. But it was a huge loss. I still feel the gap nine years later.

In the past few weeks, since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, we’ve all had the opportunity to watch rituals and ceremonies in action.

***

So. Back to pomp and circumstance. Back to ritu als and ceremonies. They do help us cope with difficult circumstances. They tell us what to do when we’re too distressed to think.

Camrose Fire Department was out promoting recruitment for volunteer firefighters during the Community Registration Night held on September 8 at the Camrose Community Field House. Eight-year-old Porter Cave may be just a little young to recruit, but CFD firefighters Kolten Schiestel, left, and Duncan McDougall were giving it their best shot. If you are interested in joining CFD as a volunteer firefighter, contact the station at 780-672-2906, email fire@camrose.ca or visit www.camrose.ca/en/living-here/fire-department.aspx.

I am humbled to be writing this to you all.

At the time of her death, would I have wanted to have many ceremonial functions to attend or even lead? Would I have wanted to be required to dress up in uncomfortable uniforms? Would I have wanted to be observed by thousands of people? Would I have wanted video cameras watching and recording my every move? Would I have wanted TV comics to mimic me in front of millions of viewers? Not for the first time, I’m grateful not to be a celebrity.

Watching King Charles III and his three siblings, along with younger members of the royal family, march ing behind the Queen’s coffin on its way to Westminster, I thought what a brutal experience that must have been. For Princes William and Harry, they would have been re membering their walk, at ages 15 and 12, to the funeral of their mother, Princess Diana, with thousands of onlookers on the streets, and millions of people watching on television.Ialsowatched video clips of King Charles being irritated by a pen that didn’t work.

We have a ritual for that When I was in my thir ties, and surer of much more than I am now, I was somewhat contemptuous of ceremonies and rituals.

Alan Fielding,Camrose

Spontaneity was my thing. Seemed to me that sometimes ceremonies and rituals squeezed the life out of what could have been more meaningful or more fun. Ceremonies often felt like just going through the motions. That seemed phony to me.

I read a piece that made me laugh–sort of. Here’s the quote: “Few positions require the composure, stamina, and decorum expected of the British military guards who have served as the Queen’s Royal Guard during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II…

About 10 months ago I had a vision to bring the 2022 Canadian Police Ca nine Championships to Camrose. After receiving formal approval, the work began to ensure this event was a five-star experience for everyone involved. You all provided a piece to the overall puzzle and each had imperative roles to play in bringing this vision to a re ality. After a week of compe tition, guest speakers, and community engagement–I can objectively say that the event was nothing short of a resounding success. From the competitors who attend from across the country to the child who attended pub lic day to watch the police dogs–everyone had nothing but accolades for the event as aThiswhole.event has provid ed lasting memories for the attendees, the thousands of people who attended the public day and for the City of Camrose. not express the amount of gratitude I personally have towards all of you. Your contributions to this event have touched so many dif ferent people on so many levels. The legacy of this national event in Camrose will last for years to come and many bonds were cre ated that will continue to grow, that will directly and positively impact the K9 community and everyone who was Wordsinvolved.cannot do justice for the thanks that myself, competitors, judges, quar ries, volunteers, the Cam rose Police Service and the City of Camrose have for all of you. Please share this with anyone within your orga nization that had a hand in making this event an in credible success.

“Protocols that all Royal Guards must follow include avoiding smiling and laughing, remaining nonreactive to people surrounding them unless an emergency requires shouting a command or pointing their rifles in warning, forgoing bathroom breaks, and learning how to faint properly.“How does one faint properly, while guarding the British sovereign?… Soldiers must learn how to ‘faint to attention,’ which is why photographs of lineups in which one of the guards has passed out usually show the unfortunate person lying face down on the ground with their arms at their sides. It’s expected that if soldiers feel themselves going down, they pitch forward directly onto their front while still holding their rifle at attention. According to Major Dai Bevan of the Welsh Guards, ‘It will probably involve a broken nose and a whole lot of missingNowteeth.’”I’mnot only glad not to be a celebrity, but glad not to have to learn how to faint properly!

Miles-long lineups of people waited quietly to pay their respects by walking past the Queen’s coffin lying in state at Westminster. Changing of the guard every 20 minutes, with precision marching and maneuvering of spears.I’mwriting this before the Queen’s funeral, so can’t comment on all the ceremony of that event. Pomp and circumstance.

Salute to volunteers Bravo to Bonnie Hutchinson for her col umn September 6, which put Dr. Hinshaw’s salary and bonus into context. Dr. Hinshaw has helped lead our province through the deadliest pandemic in more than a hundred years. She has done so with knowl edge, skill, calm and empa thy despite the enormous pressure, personal attacks and threats to which she has been subject. I have no objection to anyone, includ ing hedge fund managers and professional athletes, earning (legally) all they can with little discernible public benefit, as long as they pay their fair share of taxes. We are very fortu nate to have Dr. Hinshaw as our chief medical officer of health.

OLMP edged the crosstown rivals École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS) in the opening match and then the two squads won several match es to meet again in the final championship that the Roy als won.“Last year, we had a pretty strong year, but we had a young team. This year everyone is more experi enced and we want to finish our last year of high school strong,” said OLMP Grade 12 student Grayson Jarrett.

The team won zones last year and placed sixth at provincials.“Ithinkwe can medal, get to the final this year and take it home. Last year, ÉCCHS had a strong team and beat us a few times. We wanted to send a message early that we can beat the other Camrose high school,” saidOLMPJarrett.competes in the 2A division, while ÉCCHS is a 3A “Weschool.have all grown a little bit since last year, have gotten stronger and we are looking like a solid team so far,” he added.

Jarrett plays either outside hitter or right side, depending on the strategy in that“Ongame.my club team, when the score was close, I would get a lot of sets to wards me and the same is here as well. I like the pres sure and to be in a position to put games away. I like it on my shoulders a bit, espe cially when the other team is trying to take it away from us late in the game,” Jarrett explained.

“We need to get every one on the court talking. If we lost a point, you want to cheer everyone on, support each other and stay up,” he said, as one of the leaders on the team. “We have a young core of players com ing up as well and they look at what we are doing on the floor and look up to us as well,” Jarrett explained.

Kolby Zimmer of the OLMP Royals fires the ball between two defenders in a game against the Vauxhall Vixens. Vauxhall went on to reach the final of the Earle Berry Tournament. The ÉCCHS Trojans lost in the quarter-finals.

“Our team is looking to making zones first in late November against some challenging teams. If we win that, we will be headed to provincials on November 27 in Oilfield School out by

Next year, he wants to make the jump to college or university volleyball. “I’m talking to quite a few schools. I’m looking at go ing to Ontario to play be cause they are a little more accepting of smaller out sides, because some only like six-foot one-and-a-half. So for the university side, that is a little undersized,” reflected Jarrett.

The Our Lady of Mount Pleasant (OLMP) Roy als boys volleyball team captured the Earle Berry Tournament hosted by the Augustana Vikings on Sep tember 9 and 10.

“We just want to set an example. We have five Grade 12 players now.”

“In the Canada West di vision, they like to take guys six-foot-five and up. If I went to Ontario, I would have a better shot at receiving scholarship money,” he said.

OLMP has won the last six zone tournaments in volleyball. “This year, we have a new team, CACHS from the Red Deer area, who have a strong volleyball program and have been dominating the 1A division. They have won provincials almost every year, now they are moving up. We have to beat them to make it to provincials.”

Jarrett played club vol leyball this summer and on Team Alberta to gain more valuable experience for this season.“Iwent to Edmonton to play for NAVC and we ended up winning Division 1 nationals. It was a special moment for both me and my team. In the past, I played for Team Alberta U16 team and then was asked to play club volleyball. I had a re ally good year and then this summer, I played on Team Alberta U17 and we ended up winning the Can ada Cup against Manitoba in the final in three. That was in July in Calgary. It is year-round volleyball for me. I don’t get much of a break,” Jarrett said.

Kodiaks double Spruce Grove in pre-season

In memory of Doreen O’Brien

Until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us Your fight was all in vain, God took you in His loving arms And saved you from all pain.

Being the oldest of three boys, Dale often led the way to try new adventures. Many science experiments were held in the backyard with cousin Warran as the brains behind the blow-up, crash-up, smash-up derbies. Funny, all the neighbours moved away – only one original is left. Perhaps their boys were in on the shenanigans, too.

Raymond Bishop wanted a classy vehicle when he spotted this 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix on Main Street in Ryley.

The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more ex clusive.“Everything on the car is as it came from the factory. In fact, it still has the fac tory spare tire in the trunk and in beautiful shape like it was never driven,” said Ray mond.“I really like the body style of these Pontiacs. The Buicks and Pontiacs in the back are the same, but the body style is totally differ ent. I like the shape of the Pontiac better in this model.”

The original thinking on the 301 CID engine was that the weight savings from using a significantly lighter engine would cancel out the horsepower loss from the smaller displacement. This turned out to be a major miscalculation and 301 equipped cars became much less desirable among Grand Prix enthusiasts and collectors. The 301 also had a knocking (pre-ignition) problem that was later determined to be caused by the shape of the combustion chamber. Each of those engines were Pontiac-built units as in previous years.

The parking lamps were now positioned between the quad headlamps (same setup as a 1967 or 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass), and the previous year’s waterfall grille was replaced by a narrower one that extended into the lower portion of the bumper. Behind the bumper were new reinforcements (mounting panels) made from aluminum rather than steel to reduce weight. In back the taillights were simplified to eliminate the weighty pot metal bezels that created the horizontal stripe effect in 1976. The same three models (J, LJ and SJ) were car ried over with engine revisions.

Raymond Bishop owns a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ.

A complete reworking of the front header and bum per highlighted the 1977 Grand Prix, which was the fi nal year for the 1973-vintage body shell that was set to be replaced by a downsized GP for 1978.

“I was attracted to the great shape of the car and the look of it. These are beautiful cars,” he added.

“The offense has start ed to click and their quick timing and fast movement out of the backfield, set the pace with a 60-yard touch down within the first two minutes and kept rolling on from there. The defense was kept busy and did a phenomenal job. Their com munication with each other and quick movements to the ball held the wolverines to a zero-point game. They were also able to add two touchdowns to the score. It was a great team effort, we were impressed by ev eryone’s effort and passion and they were well deserv ing of the win,” added coach Christie.OnSunday, September 25 at 1 p.m. on Emerald Hills Turf Field they face the Sherwood Park North stars.
