FIGHT FOR BEAUTY The fights that build cities and culture OCT 14 - DEC 17 Fairmont Pacific Rim, Vancouver
FightForBeauty.ca #FIGHTFORBEAUTY
When did we say yes to beauty being discarded deleted and demeaned? Where is the agreement that beauty is optional – Not urgent for us to thrive? Since when have we learned the price of everything yet know the value of nothing? How could we have missed that beauty is a strength not a substance that makes its way through the cracks to come after our senses in full force to push us forward? Because we, we have not signed up. Westbank. Fight for Beauty.

Brian Jessel Magazine we showcase some of the new clean, crisp BMW design language that uses fewer lines in a sophisticated and very precise way. This progressive luxury language is clearly present in the new Concept 8 Series profiled on page 46. “The future starts now” is our mantra as we launch the all-new 2018 BMW X3 this November (see page 21). Sport Activity Vehicles are the most significant and fastest growing segment in the Canadian automotive industry, and once again, BMW has truly captured the sportiness and enhanced comfort that will set the new standard for all mid-sized luxury SAVs. Just as the Vancouver landscape is changing dramatically, BMW is evolving and expanding our product line to include some of the most exciting luxury vehicle we’ve ever seen. It’s truly an exciting time at Brian Jessel BMW, as we continue to best serve our customers in the Metro Vancouver region. We are proud to be part of the way you drive, and I personally wish to thank you for your support. Sincerely,

from your store and I’d like to share a bit about my experience. We arrived to Brian Jessel BWM and were greeted warmly at the door. We test drove a 5 Series in Richmond the day before and decided to see what your location was all about as you have a strong reputation and great reviews from some of our friends. We recognized Valentino from previous business dealings and this was another strong factor in our coming out to your store. We told Valentino, as many people do, that we are in the early stages and not in a rush to purchase. He was very understanding and was happy to provide information and answer questions for us. We configured our ideal vehicle and Valentino graciously was patient and listened to what we felt we wanted and was important to us, and was able to search and find us an option that fit our needs to a T. It takes time, discipline, and the right people at all levels to pull something like this off. Just wanted to send a note to say thank you and please keep doing what you’re doing as it works!

MIRABEL AT ENGLISH BAY
THE ULTIMATE IN WEST COAST LIVING
N
estled on a peninsula with the seawall, English Bay, and Stanley Park in one direction and downtown and the financial district in the other, the West End is the quintessential Vancouver neighbourhood. Few places on the planet offer this kind of city-meets-the-beach lifestyle. All in a single day walk from your front door to pitch and putt or go for a swim at Second Beach; grab a coffee and stroll to Siwash Rock; shop for designer brands along Luxury Row; and head out for sushi, tapas, or a seafood feast. You could walk to your high-rise office (or hotel lounge for a drink) or to the seaplane terminal for a weekend getaway, all in a historic, storied community with tree-lined streets. English Bay goes back to the 1880s, when Vancouver was just becoming established as a resort town and Joe Fortes was working as the city’s first lifeguard. Mirabel at English Bay offers a new opportunity to live in this iconic area, the most natural urban community on earth. Consisting of two towers at Davie and Broughton streets, Mirabel is perched at the top of the West End’s natural crest, giving residents views of the ocean, mountains, city skyline as well as Stanley Park and the Lions Gate Bridge. Contemporary West Coast architecture by Henriquez Partners Architects along with exquisite interiors by Alda Pereira Design elevate these homes to a class all their own. “This is downtown living without feeling like downtown,” says Liz Anderson, Director of Sales & Marketing at Marcon, the trusted and respected developer and builder of Mirabel. “Outside, everything is at your fingertips: an evening stroll along the beach; coffee shops and restaurants;

shopping on Robson and Alberni street. Inside your home you have views wrapping all around you with floor-to ceiling windows. This is seamless indoor-outdoor living. This is refined living.” For the ultimate Vancouver lifestyle, Mirabel’s distinguished collection of residences includes four extraordinary penthouses. At 2,659 square feet each, they feature a private elevator, private garage, spacious balcony, and 1,345-square-foot rooftop terrace. With breathtaking views, that rooftop space is the perfect place to watch the sunset after a long day with a glass of wine, fire up your new gas barbecue, or grow your own tomatoes and herbs. Renowned local designer Alda Pereira has created, contemporary, elegant, clean-lined interiors to make the penthouses refined and comfortable. Natural light pours into the airy, open-plan homes, while natural materials like glass and cast concrete are abundant. With two modern colour palettes to choose from, residents also have at their fingertips multiple pre-wired connections for high-speed Internet and TV access. Premium kitchens feature Sub-Zero integrated refrigerator and solid quartz countertops, while the homes have thoughtful features like full-sized washer and dryer and large, closets with built-in organizers. Spa-like ensuites have wall-to-wall marble, Italian wood-veneer cabinetry, solid marble countertops, and a stunning soaker tub made with finely ground volcanic ash for superior insulation. Then there is the, secure bike storage, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and more. DRIVE A R O U N D M ET R O
Vancouver for a little while and you’ll notice a couple of things: there are plenty of luxury SUVs and CUVs on the road; and many of them are sporting that familiar iconic blue and white BMW logo. Since the first generation X3 debuted in 2003 — described by the automaker as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) — BMW has established itself as the preeminent builder in this wildly popular segment. Today, the ‘X’ family counts a half-dozen vehicles in its stable, from the nimble, premium compact X1 through to the X6, a Sport Activity Coupé that marries superior performance and handling with BMW’s patented all-wheel drive technology. And while it all started with the segmentdefining X5 in 1999, the X3’s arrival a half-decade later ushered in BMW’s xDrive, at the time a revolutionary system that featured permanent power transmission to all four wheels. Translation: the ideal vehicle for a winter getaway in Whistler. Combined with its smaller footprint and car-like handling characteristics, that first-gen X3 sold more than 600,000 vehicles before being replaced by its successor in 2010. It also spawned copycats from most every other global manufacturer, to the point that today no luxury automaker is without a crossover in its model lineup. But as it has always done, BMW continues to stay ahead of that pack, exemplified by the release this month of the 2018 X3. The all-new third-generation SAV improves on all aspects of its top-selling predecessor. And for the first time ever, BMW’s M Performance division has got into the X3 act, unleashing the X3 M40i with a best-in-segment acceleration time of zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. Keeping all that

Keeping true to its heritage, the third-gen X3 combines rugged off-road looks with bold and dynamic design. The exterior dimensions are unchanged, however; the wheel-
base has been extended by five centimetres, and its long hood and extremely short front overhang with finely balanced proportions emphasize the perfect 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axle. For the first time on a BMW X model, the new X3’s front fascia features a muscular three-dimensional kidney grille and hexagonal fog lights. A downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes add to the muscular appearance. Another first for a BMW X model available in Canada is a factory-installed trailer hitch. With a towing capacity of 2000 kilograms (when equipped with trailer brakes) and a two-inch receiver, the 2018 X3 will be compatible with a broad range of BMW accesso-

ries including tongues, drop tongues, towing balls, a step to help access roof-mounted accessories and several varieties of bike racks. Inside the driver-focused cabin of the new X3, standard sport seats up front come with power-adjustable side bolsters, while a standard Anthracite headliner conveys the kind of sophistication BMW owners have come to expect. New functions include front ventilated seats for driver and front passenger and a 250 mm longer panoramic glass moonroof. The latest iteration of BMW’s iDrive system comes complete with a widescreen touchscreen monitor, and gesture control, which a wave of a finger can adjust the volume control and perform other functions.

At night, the iDrive display appears to be floating above the instrument panel. For 2018, two X3 models are available: the xDrive 30i and the M40i. Powering the 30i is a 2.0-litre, TwinPower turbo four-cylinder engine with an output of 248 horsepower (up eight over its predecessor, the xDrive28i). The M40i’s power comes from a new M Performance turbo six-cylinder engine, boasting 355 horsepower. Both models come standard with an eight-speed Sport gearbox with shift paddles. The transmission is designed to be more efficient, helping to lower fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, the available M Sport Package underscores the dynamic prowess of the allnew BMW X3 with the M Aerodynamic kit.

Also included are Shadowline trim and M double-spoke 20-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires. The interior includes a new M Sport leather steering wheel and M doorsill finishers. And finally, as this is a vehicle designed for all road conditions, engineers have enhanced the new X3’s dynamic handling characteristics and improved comfort over all terrain. The new Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch offers Adaptive Mode when the vehicle is equipped with Dynamic Damper Control, in addition to configurations such as, Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ (M40i model only) modes. It didn’t take long for BMW’s M engineers to get their hands on the new 5 Series. The result? A 600-horsepower luxury sport sedan like no other.

T’S HARD TO BELIEVE IT’S BEEN OVER
three decades since the first BMW M5 forever redefined the term luxury highperformance sedan. It’s just as difficult to imagine how BMW engineers and designers can continue to raise the bar that they set for themselves with each new generation M5. And true to form, they’ve done it again. The all-new sixth-gen 2018 BMW M5 is the quickest, most technologically advanced M5 ever. The numbers say it all: 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds; 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds; and a mighty 600-horsepower. At the heart of the new M5 is the latest generation 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8, its 600 horsepower up 40 on the 2017 M5, and peak torque of 553 pound-feet (up 37). Making its debut in the 2018 M5 is the new M-specific all-wheel drive system, M xDrive, which allows the luxury sport sedan to operate in either AWD mode or traditional rear-wheel drive. Optional M carbon ceramic brakes with gold-painted calipers provide a 23 kg weight reduction. Other weight savings come from a carbon fibrereinforced roof and a weight-optimized exhaust system. Like all M models, the chassis on the new M5 was honed on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The 2018 BMW M5 will be available at Brian Jessel BMW in February.

to perform equally well on the roadway or racetrack, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is built with the open road in mind. Badged as a 640i xDrive, this 2018 model has the sexy lines of a sensuous coupé, yet the refined interior cabin space of a sedan. It enjoys award-winning power in the form of a 335-horsepower, twin-turbo six-cylinder, spiriting the five-passenger vehicle to 100 km/h from a standstill in just over five seconds. It boasts more than 1800 litres of storage space, meaning no need to rent golf clubs on that weekend getaway to Whistler. And its standard panoramic moonroof, featuring
a two-section glass surface with an overall length of 1.1 metres and a width just under a metre, allows you to enjoy the scenery above you as you cruise through the mountain passes. Then there’s the ride. The 6 Series GT’s adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and two-axle air suspension uses electronically controlled dampers to improve ride and suspension comfort while at the same time sharpening the car’s dynamics. An electrically powered compressor with pressure reservoir supplies the suspension with air, allowing you to set the car’s ride height with the simple touch of a button. Ground clearance can be raised by 20 millimetres for those rougher roads, while a 10-millimetre drop in ride height occurs automatically at speeds over 120 km/h and in Sport mode, selected using the Driving Dynamic Control switch. Check out the 2018 BMW 6 Series in the Brian Jessel BMW showroom this fall.
Who says water and electricity don’t mix? Technological gains made by BMW’s entry into the all-electric Formula E championship won’t just benefit the automaker’s road vehicles; they’ll float on the water too. The recently launched Torqeedo speed boat might look like a classic lake boat from the outside, but under that stained wooden deck hums the same high-propulsion capacity battery that turns the wheels of the 2018 BMW i3. The BMW Group is supplying lithium-ion batteries to German company Torqeedo, a global provider of electric and hybrid propulsion systems for motorboats from one to 160 horsepower and for sailing yachts and commercial marine applications, such as ferries and water taxis. Turns out the high-voltage batteries from BMW i provide an environmentfriendly, cost-effective, silent alternative to conventional boat propulsion systems.

Pre-Owned, Year Joined: 1990 “As the shop foreman I get to be involved with everything, particularly guiding technicians. When they need advice on certain projects they come to me—it’s really satisfying to step in and help solve those problems; it means you’re increasing their skillset while keeping the customer happy at the same time.”

2 Garrett Gratton Service Manager. Year Joined: 2015 “It’s a simple formula we’ve got going on here, and it works. The management is quick to change things if we see something not working, and that solves the problem. It’s not the same issues rolling year after year … It’s a culture of success, and it’s contagious.” 3 Alexander Tong Client Service Manager. Year Joined: 2014 “My job is more on the training side, I’m coaching service advisers to make sure the customer is getting the best treatment possible, and I’m always there to step in if they need a hand. Why was I chosen for that job? Probably because I’m the best [smiles].” 4 Kevin Holter Service Manager. Year Joined: 2015 “There’s a different kind of person that works here, a different kind of energy that buzzes about the place. I think it’s something to do with the openness between the managers and the team members—we all have the same passion to succeed.” 5 Eric Kluth Lot Manager. Year Joined: 1998 “Brian has been really good to me, and in turn that means I’ve always been very loyal to both him and the company. Everyone here has the same kind of mindset which means we all enjoy coming to work every day.”

6 Bruce Barton Parts Manager. Year Joined: 2014 “This isn’t a car dealership, it’s so much more than that. It’s the only place I’ve worked where if you have an idea to change something they totally support you.” 7 Troy Rodrigues Warrantee Manager. Year Joined: 2017 “I think the best thing about BJBMW is the amount of staff they have working here. They really look at the big picture rather than short-term gain, and I think that translates to the standard of work we produce.” 8 Greg Saccone Shop Foreman. Year Joined: 1997 “The challenges we face are evolving every day—that’s what keeps my job so interesting. BMW has resources they provide to us but also, as you can see, this is a massive shop. There’s probably over 100 years of experience in this shop that any of us can tap in to when we need help.” 9 Jay Blackett Assistant Shop Foreman. Year Joined: 2016 “I could work on cars anywhere, in any shop, in any city in the world. But it’s the people that make you choose where’s best to settle, and the people that get you through each day. That’s why I’m here, and will be for a long time.” 26

cabinetmaker. So, too, was his father. But it didn’t occur to him, growing up in his native Denmark, that he might want to rebel against his family’s tradition. In fact, he chuckles when the suggestion is made to him, as if the thought had never crossed his mind. “It was a simpler time,” he says. “We’re talking about the 1970s. It was a natural thing to do, and it was all I knew. My grandfather and dad had a furniture factory together. I grew up literally next to it, and spent my entire childhood in and around it.” Happily, Skaaning is a man who has no professional regrets. His fascinating career eventually brought him to Vancouver, where he cofounded—alongside younger brother, Peter—Inspiration Furniture, which continues to thrive 15 years after its opening.

“We thought Vancouver was good for contemporary, light, minimalist furniture.”
Skaaning’s setting down of roots here in 2002 capped a nomadic two decades that began in the 1980s. After finishing his apprenticeship in cabinetmaking (as well as Denmark’s compulsory military service), he participated in an exchange program that took him to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was a jack-of-all-trades at a furniture store specializing in Danish teak. He made repairs and deliveries, and worked in the warehouse and showroom. He stayed “until they kicked me out,” but returned as soon as U.S. immigration services allowed so that he could take up an offer from a group of Danish furniture manufacturers to be their travelling sales representative.

“I spent 20 years on the road, going all over North America. My territory was Canada and the U.S. including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico,” he recalls. “It was a wonderful time. As a young man—I mean, come on. I was 23 and travelling everywhere. “But,” he adds laughing, “I also spent between 200 and 250 days a year on the road, and that gets a little bit old.” Not least because he now had a wife and two children. Skaaning was already familiar with Vancouver from his travels, so when the opportunity arose for him and Peter to acquire the former location of New Look Furniture (its owner was retiring after 40-plus years), near Granville Island, he was simultaneously able 32

pending two decades as a travelling salesman sucked much of the joy out of Steen Skaaning’s time behind the wheel, but his love of driving was reignited when he leased his first vehicle—a 535—from Brian Jessel BMW a decade ago.
“I love the 5 Series; it’s a favourite of mine,” he says. “I had it for three years and immediately
changed it in for exactly the same car, just in a different colour. “And then I lucked out and got a good deal on a 750—a beautiful car. [My wife and I] took some long road trips; we went down into the U.S. and saw Mount Rushmore and so forth. That car was just built for long-distance travelling.” As well as praising his go-to liaison at the dealership, Customer Relations Supervisor Paul Killeen, Skaaning has nothing but good things to say about his experiences with Brian Jessel BMW. “It’s a quality dealership; there’s no doubt about it. Everything they do—the service, the displays, the marketing, the charity involvement—is really quite something.”

to stop living out of a suitcase and to offer Vancouverites a one-of-a-kind furniture destination catering to all budgets and homes of all sizes. Inspiration’s original location in Honolulu, founded by Skaaning’s brother Peter and Thomas Sorensen, had been a great success, which boded well for its new home in Canada. “The parallel at the time was that Honolulu has quite an active condo lifestyle,” he explains, “so we thought Vancouver was also good for contemporary, light, minimalist furniture.” His hunch proved correct. Inspiration’s sprawling 40,000-square-foot space—incorporating a showroom for the Danish brand BoConcept—complements a Skaaning mini-empire that also includes two furniture stores in Southern California and a second BoConcept shop in Bellevue, Washington. A Brian Jessel BMW customer for the past 10 years, Skaaning also sees a parallel between Inspiration and the dealership whose vehicles he drives. “I like to compare the furniture we carry with BMWs, because they’re well built and good value for the money. I have two BMW motorcycles as well—I’m a huge fan of BMWs!”

the well-named Halcyon Hot Springs. Spotlessly clean and beautifully located over the lake, abutted by the Monashee Range, Halcyon offers three pools on two levels. After another idyllic mineral ”treatment,” we purr a further 45 kilometres to Nakusp Hot Springs, at the end of a winding mountain road. There, surrounded by old-growth forest, we luxuriate in the 200,000 litres of fresh, filtered water that enter each pool daily while savouring the pure mountain air. The day winds down cosily as we settle into one of the resort’s cedar chalets. Day Six and 115 kilometres later we’re in Ainsworth in Kootenay Lake, the last of our six-pack. Intrigued by tales of the magical caves here we splash there first. It’s 44°C in this steamy grotto and we’re dissolving in bliss. Time now to try the cooler pool before heading to our accommodations here. Then, after dinner and an evening’s soak, we turn our thoughts to Osoyoos once again. Tonight we’ll be relishing a final treat, dinner at Nk’Mip’s Mica restaurant, as we celebrate a hot road trip and a final night at their Spirit Ridge Resort. 40

and a wine enthusiast’s mind will likely immediately think of the legendary Château de Beaucastel. And when hankering for one of the very best rosés in Provence, a beeline is usually made towards Château Miraval. In fact, when zooming out to look at the Rhône Valley in general, it is the Perrin family who is synonymous with the region, at the helm of both these iconic properties, and known for incredible consistency and quality. For five generations, this family—“Famille Perrin,” if we’re getting technical, and referring to the family’s tier of eponymous labellings—have been fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, cousins, aunts and uncles who pursue a singular vision of fresh, lively wines cultivated with an emphasis on organic and biodynamic practices. In a time when corporate takeovers of lauded, historic family wineries make news with increasing frequency, I was curious whether there was any concern of the Perrin family’s legend being

cut short. It was at the tail end of their 2017 harvest when I recently caught fifth-generation family member Thomas Perrin by phone with my query. “We are lucky to be such a large family, so we should have no problems,” he told me. “Although the eldest of all the cousins is 17, so there is still a lot of time for us to work out our future. “Even though I say that, if you ask my 13-year-old son, he will tell you he wants to make wine in Vaqueros, but I tell him he has to do school first!” When asked about how vintage 2017 is looking, Perrin tells me of long, hot stretches, including three months without any rain. “We also have had no late-summer frost, so it’s been really lucky for us.” With the very hot and dry summer, he says we can expect lower yields, but higher quality in the wines. “We are seeing more temperature and weather extremes with climate change so, for example, that means our Grenache used to have optimal ripeness and balance of tannins at 14 per cent alcohol, but
2014 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Beaucastel
we now see it often at 15 or above before it’s ready. The good thing is we have planted and keep focus on other varieties like Syrah and Mourvèdre to blend in, so we can be sure our wines will still have good balance and quality.” Balance and quality are hallmarks of all Famille Perrin wines. One only has to crack a bottle of Famille Perrin 2014 Vacqueyras ‘Les Christins’ ($24.99 at B.C. Liquor Stores) to see a shining example illustrated. “The Grenache and Syrah in this wine are grown in sandy soil, which is good for maturity of the grapes,” Perrin remarked. “We had plenty of cool nights in 2014, so there is very good acid balance. While you can age this wine for another five years, I think it is showing very well, and good to drink now.” This writer, who enjoyed a few splashes of it while working on this piece, will definitely back Thomas Perrin up on his claim. Once a cork is pulled, I anticipate many Brian Jessel magazine readers will happily join our consensus.
A slightly cooler vintage offers a well-balanced wine, with bright acidity and light tannins framing things well. Italian plums, black cherry, red currants and blackberries are pleasing on the palate, with fresh thyme and oregano adding extra dimension. Decanting before serving will unleash more flavour and character, perfect for meaty stews, lamb shank, rich pasta dishes and sharp cheeses. Enjoyable now, but will easily age a good eight to 10 years. $85.99. Available at select BC Liquor Stores FALL/WINTER 2017 • BrianJesselBMW.com

position as one of the most recognizable premium brands in the world was ever in doubt, the automaker has launched what it’s calling a “luxury model offensive.” Leading the charge is a 21st century iteration of the iconic 8 Series model, an all-new coupé that will be very close in styling and substance to the Concept 8 Series that was unveiled at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May. “The number 8 has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW,” explains Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Harald Krüger. “The forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupé will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand in hand.” The 2018 8 Series revives a nameplate made famous with the first generation Grand Tourers built between 1989 and 1999. These very desirable coupés were powered with V8 and V12 engines, underscoring the 8 Series commitment to power and performance. Indeed, some V12-equipped models came mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, a first for a road car. Other revolutionary aspects of those first-generation 8 Series coupés included drive-by-wire throttle

systems and a multi-link rear axle. Not surprisingly, the all-new second-generation 8 Series will continue that history of cuttingedge technological advancements. The Concept 8 Series’ exterior melds BMW design cues from the past with styling signatures pointing to the future, all the while still immediately recognizable as a BMW. The silhouette spreads low and powerfully over the road, and the classic coupé proportions of a long front hood and flowing roofline hint at the car’s Type A personality. The exclusively developed exterior paint finish Barcelona Grey Liquid—a greyish-blue with highly iridescent pigments—provides a shimmering effect, and the meaty 21-inch light-alloy wheels give the new 8 Series an aggressive, yet oh-so-sophisticated stance. The dark, stylized carbon-fibre diffuser in the rear apron adds extra lightness and a sportier feel to the rear graphic. Large trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes frame the rear section and point to the dynamic driving experience to come. That emotional connection carries into the cabin, which focuses on the task of driving. After all, this is a performance coupé designed to become the benchmark in the segment. The grouping of functions into control clusters—in the centre stack, the centre console and the

doors—creates a clear graphic structure. The high centre console and the instrument panel’s low visual focus add further emphasis to the snug and sporty feeling of space. The exclusive sports seats are slim in design, the carbon-fibre shell providing the basic structure and the finest leather making them a treat to sit in. Likewise, the steering wheel’s contrast of aluminum and dark leather on the gripping surfaces emphasizes this luxurious sense of sportiness. Accent surfaces in carbon fibre and hand-polished aluminum also create contrasts that underscore that sporty yet technical feel. The faceted ground gearshift lever and the iDrive Controller made from Swarovski glass with a smoky quartz look are other classy finishing touches. The fresh-sheet design of the BMW 8 Series Coupé builds on the company’s tradition of luxurious sports cars and adds another exciting model—a true dream car—to its existing luxury-class lineup. The ongoing development of luxury as a concept is closely linked with the numbers 7 and 8 in the BMW model scheme. Joining the 2018 Series in BMW’s ambitious expanded luxury segment lineup are the BMW X7, the BMW i8 and the upcoming BMW i8 Roadster.
How confident is BMW in its all-new 8 Series? A racing version of the new coupé, called the M8 GTE, will be competing on the world’s top racetracks before the road-going model goes on sale next year. Underscoring the automaker’s renewed commitment to competition, the M8 GTE will herald the return of BMW Motorsport to the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of its inaugural campaign in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The BMW M8 GTE made its world debut this past summer at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany, the same factory where the production model of the new BMW 8 Series will
be manufactured. The close link between production and motor racing is one of the cornerstones of the development of the BMW M8 GTE. The first time a BMW car started at the 24 Hours of Le Mans was back in 1939, when a BMW 328 claimed a class victory after 236 laps of racing. BMW Motorsport’s greatest sporting hour at Circuit de la Sarthe came in 1999, when Yannick Dalmas, Joachim Winkelhock and Pierluigi Martini took overall victory in a BMW V12 LMR. It’s a motoring mantra as old as the combustible engine, and it’s as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the early days of racing. BMW has been out front of the pack right from the beginning, winning on two wheels at the prestigious Isle of Man TT way back in 1939, and on four a year earlier at the grueling Mille Miglia endurance race. The manufacturer has stood on the top step of the podium in F1, LeMans and World Touring Car championships, and taken what its learned on the racetrack and infused that technology into its road-going cars. So few were surprised when BMW recently announced it will campaign factory cars in the Fia Formula E Championship, an all-electric race series that spans the globe and includes many of the world’s top automakers. The cars, equipped with a newly developed BMW drivetrain, will be run by the Andretti Formula E team as BMW’s works entry in the series. The driving force behind the new BMW i Motorsport is the development of innovative technology in the field of electromobility, in which the company has been a global leader over the past decade. Although chronograph watches go all the way back to 1913, it was during the 1960s that motorsport teams and their drivers began adopting them on a large scale. From that time on, no racecar driver worth his lap times would be seen without his feature-laden chrono and that still holds today, with many iconic watchmakers producing updated versions of decades-old designs.
Racing Time
Four motorsport-inspired watches that look great at the track and in the driver’s seat.
A famous chronograph with movie links is TAG Heuer’s Monaco, which was famously worn by Steve McQueen in the motorsport classic Le Mans. The “McQueen” Monaco stands out from the chronograph crowd with its square case, and blue dial and strap. TAG Heuer has a long association with motorsports that continues to this day with its involvement in the Red Bull Formula One team. The famed TAG Heuer shield can be seen on the Red Bull cars, uniforms and helmets and the watches are worn by the drivers on the podium they battle for every race. $6,500. Omega Racing Master Chronometer
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
All Speedmaster watches from Omega carry the spirit and design inspiration of distinguished predecessors, and the new Racing Master Chronometer is no exception. Some dial elements date back to the late 1960s, and the tachymeter scale bezel aids precise speed calculations. Super-LumiNova hour markers light things up when the sun sets at the Le Mans 24 Hour race. The watch’s Master Chronometer certification is Switzerland’s highest performance rating, so superlative accuracy is assured. $10,500. Omega Boutique Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Lugaro, Siba Jewellers.
The enduring classic that is the Rolex Cosmograph has long been associated with actor and Daytona wearer Paul Newman, who was also a racing driver of no minor ability. The current Daytona has been mechanically upgraded in numerous ways since the 1960s, but it still looks much the same as the original. And that’s the way buyers like it. You can also get one for free, but to do so, you’ll have to be one of the category-winning drivers in the gruelling Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona enduranace sports car race held in Florida each year. $39,850 (yellow gold). Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle Chronograph Perpetual Calendar When Vacheron Constantin opened for business in 1755, the earliest days of auto racing were still a long way off, but today the iconic Swiss watchmaker crafts some of the most desirable and prestigious chronographs on the planet. This beauty is housed in a gold or platinum case, and abounds in horological complications that enhance a super-accurate chronograph movement. Understandably, this is no economy timepiece and the base price is close to that of a 2018 BMW i8. $140,200 (gold); $175,000 (platinum). Palladio Jewellers, Siba Jewellers.

Family Day July 15, 2017
The second annual Brian Jessel BMW Family Day was created for our customers and staff to spend time with their children, nieces/nephews, grandkids—a different way to get to know our customers and their families as well as our staff and their families. It has been an overwhelming success with over 500 guests attending this past July. Over 200 children enjoyed a day of games, fun, food and entertainment. It’s really a special day for us to organize.
The Last Tuesday Nighter September 12, 2017 This year Brian Jessel BMW partnered with youth cycling and team DEVO and Cannondale PB Fortius. Racing around the Brian Jessel BMW dealership turned out to be a “highlight” of the racing season with three races including Elite Men’s and Women’s. Over 500 people attended and participated in this inaugural event, which was truly unique with the closed track. The night featured BBQ, music, guest appearances and endless excitement with short lap racing. Not to miss next year!

Beem-ing with Pride Name: Ron Shore Resides: Vancouver Profession: Businessman First BMW you owned? A 1979 red BMW 320i bought in 1986. BMW you currently own? A white 1995 BMW 325is with 660,000 kms bought in 2003. It still has the original exhaust system, original alternator, and the original engine has never been touched. A great and amazing car to drive. Favourite BMW you have owned? A 2004 BMW Z4. Fun to drive and handling was exceptional. Had an engine problem and Brian Jessel BMW service department brought it back running better than new.

What BMW would you love to have in your garage? An i8 powered by solar panels on my garage so it would be completely self-contained without using power from the grid.
Longtime customer Ron Shore with his 1995 BMW 325is.
What about BMWs appeals to you? From my experience they are the most affordable car to drive per kilometre since they have more expensive components from the start that last a lot longer. The last three BMWs that I have owned—a 1984 318i, a 1988 325e and the 1995 325is—have all stood the test of time by going over 500,000 kms. Describe your relationship with Brian Jessel BMW. I first went to Brian Jessel BMW for servicing when he had his dealership in Abbotsford. They have always been professional and done amazing work. The thing that I like the best is they give back to the community every year by hosting the Gala at the dealership. Great people, great product with people who really care.

Free spirited and audacious designer Kenzo Takada, known as "the most Parisian of Japanese fashion designers", has designed an exceptional collection of fabrics and ceramics for Roche Bobois. To dress the Mah Jong sofa, he drew inspiration from traditional kimonos of the Nô theater. He reinterpreted the motifs and colors, creating delicate and sophisticated harmonies that symbolize the three times of the day: Asa (morning), Hiru (noon), and Yoru (evening).
