Controversial QB’s comeback
Netflix has been experiencing a great degree of success with sports documentaries, and the streamer’s latest takes viewers deep inside one of the most controversial figures in the NFL: quarterback Aaron Rodgers
After 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets in 2023. His first season for the team, however, got off to a disastrous start when, after throwing just four offensive snaps in the season opener, he tore his left Achilles.
As a result, he spent the next year focusing on his recovery, preparing to return to the field and get back into the game.
“But game-day plays and press conferences can only reveal a small part of the four-time MVP’s story,” declares Netflix’s press release for Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, a new three-part documentary series.
In one scene, famed sports physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache — who’d been treating Rodgers — points out a recurring character trait that he’s noticed in Rodgers and other top NFL quarterbacks. “There’s a common thread amongst the greatest players that I’ve taken care of,” says ElAttrache, who performed knee surgery on Tom Brady that
salvaged the quarterback’s career. “They all have a belief in themselves. Sometimes it’s a belief that their own body doesn’t follow the normal rules of anatomy or physics or biology. That’s not always healthy, but if you can corral that a little bit, I think that it can work in a positive way.”
In addition to a behind-the-scenes look at Rodgers charting his comeback with the Jets, the series also touches on the athlete’s various controversies, including his advocacy for ayuhuasca, a powerful psychedelic, and misleading the public and the NFL when he told reporters he was “immunized” against COVID-19 even though he hadn’t taken the vaccine.

SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT
Saturday, 5 p.m., NBC
Back in the 1980s, WWE (then known as WWF) exploded into the pop-culture consciousness, transforming professional wrestling from seedy sideshow to “sports entertainment” spectacle. At the time, NBC played a big role via Saturday Night’s Main Event, a series of specials airing between 1987 and 1992 that drew big ratings. Now, thanks to the WWE’s new five-year domestic media rights partnership with NBCUniversal, this live special — which, technically, is
Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVII — brings wrestling fans all the action from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, New York.

CRIMES THAT BIND
Is that show The Gentlemen ever coming back?
R.F., Vancouver
Snatch director Guy Ritchie’s dark, playful crime dramedy will return to Netflix for season two, but likely not till 2026. But good news for fans of this U.K. auteur’s particular brand of cinematic hijinks: rival streamer Paramount+ has tapped Ritchie to create another, as-yet-untitled series about “two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch all corners of the globe, and the fiercely loyal ‘fixer’ charged with protecting one of them at all costs.” The fixer will be played by Tom Hardy, while Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan head up the Irish crime family to whom he is beholden.
School’s out for star Reneé Rapp, as the actress has officially exited The Sex Lives of College Girls.
THAT’S A RAPP!
Really sad, and kinda shocked, to see Leighton suddenly leave The Sex Lives of College Girls right at the start [of season three]. What’s the story there?
F.H., Burnaby
As we previously reported, actress Reneé Rapp opted to leave this Mindy Kalingcreated comedy (which streams on Crave in Canada) after its sophomore season in order to focus on her music career. That prompted the
show’s writers to whip up a quick yet elegant exit for her character Leighton — whose struggles with status, expectations and her own burgeoning sexuality made her an inspiration to many devoted fans.
Ultimately, that exit came in episode two of this third season, as Leighton made the decision to transfer from Essex College to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — a move that is a better fit academically, but one which forced her to leave behind best pals Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Whitney (Alyah
Chanelle Scott) and Bela (Amrit Kaur). Speaking to The Wrap after Leighton’s farewell episode aired, showrunner Justin Noble explained: “I was excited to do this transfer story because, my first year, one of my best friends transferred and . . . that’s part of college that I haven’t seen before [on screen] — when someone who’s so important to this aspect of your life is just saying they’re gone. It’s really showing that Leighton kind of just figured college out faster than the others, and she’s ready to pursue what’s next.”
As for Rapp — whom you may also recognize from Tina Fey’s Mean Girls stage musical and the Paramount+ film adaptation of that musical — she seems at peace with her decision, having told Variety that music was always her true passion and the focus of her career, while acting always felt more like a means to an end: “I’ve just kept acting because it keeps supporting the music . . . Acting was my way into tricking everyone that I warranted attention.”
BEYOND REPAIR?
Do you know yet when the next Wolfs movie is coming out? Clooney and Pitt — doesn’t get any better!
G.N., Surrey
The long-awaited screen reunion between these two Ocean’s Eleven stars, in which they play underworld fixers who clash over how to handle what turns out to be a not-so-dead body, generated solid reviews and the quick announcement of a sequel by Apple TV+. But that sequel has been scrapped by director Jon Watts, who, in a statement to Deadline, cited Apple’s lastminute decision to abandon a planned theatrical release for the crime comedy in favour of a one-week theatrical run followed by immediate release on streaming. Watts was blindsided by that decision, and returned the money he’d received from Apple to start work on the sequel because, alas, he “no longer trusted them as a creative partner.”

I remember a sci-fi movie from the ’60s that focused on solutions for what it called “an energy-starved Earth,” that solved the problem with a nuclear bomb in the planet’s core. I don’t remember the actors, can’t recall the title, but it was very realistic.
H.Y., via email
It sounds like you’re thinking of the 1965 movie
A Crack in the World, which starred Dana Andrews as a scientist who believed he could solve the world’s energy crisis by creating an artificial volcano that would produce endless free power.
The movie received positive reviews and at least one credible critic labelled it “the best science fiction film of the year.” The setting is the continent of Africa, where Andrews’ character, Dr. Stephen Sorenson, in consort with UNESCO, proposes launching a thermonuclear warhead into the Earth’s crust, breaking through to the molten mantle and releasing a controlled flow of lava to the surface. In effect, it would be a harnessed volcano which could be tapped at will by the nations of the world for their energy needs. Specifically, the warhead was placed on a missile that was pointed downwards into a rift in the mantle. What could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot of things — including a crack created by the explosion that threatened to separate a huge chunk of the planet and send it off into space.
The DVD is readily available for purchase online from such sources as Amazon, and the movie is in the TCM library, so you may well come across it while channel-surfing at some point.

YELLOWSTONE
Sunday, Paramount+
One of the most buzzed shows of the past decade rides into the sunset this weekend. The gritty, soapy exploits of the power-ranching Dutton clan come to an end after an exceptionally bloody fifth season, the second half of which has found siblings Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) on the hunt for whoever assassinated family patriarch John (Kevin Costner).
Discussing this farewell episode with TVLine, Grimes was, as you might expect, a bit cryptic — telling the website that fans “won’t feel like they’ve wasted their time for the past six years.”
What’s more, talking about his own experience opening the final script, he explained: “I wanted to save reading that episode for the very last second . . . I was a mess. It’s beautiful. It’s profound. It’s heartbreaking.”
That said, this is far from the end for the Yellowstone universe. In addition to existing spinoff 1923, multiple other series are in development — including The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Suits alum Patrick J. Adams, and a possible continuation of the original Yellowstone centred on Beth and her true love Rip (Cole Hauser)

Q What does the spy genre add to the telling of a love story that wouldn’t be there in a more grounded, straightforward romantic drama?
A In a way, yes, the genre is different. But it is just a classic star-crossed lovers tale. Here are two people who love each other desperately, but circumstance threatens to keep them apart, and will keep them apart unless one or the other, or both, do something drastic, because the stakes are very high — life or death, being branded a traitor.

Bitin’ the Dust
Just one day after the finale of Yellowstone, TV will bid adieu to another of its most singular, most popular creations.
FX’s ghoulish mockumentary has spent six seasons mining chuckles from the simple yet potent juxtaposition of ancient, self-aggrandizing vampires living in modern-day Staten Island — forced to contend with not only witches, werewolves and their fellow bloodsuckers, but the mundane horrors of the Chore Wheel.
To date, this farewell chapter has been a deliciously unpredictable ride, giving us an homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, and some unexpectedly poignant character development, as our undead heroes have been forced into various levels of existential crisis — largely via entering the human workforce after their familiar Guillermo flew the coop.
Details are scant for tonight’s final episode. The network’s official synopsis only divulges that: “A surprising twist leads to a change of plans.”

It’s our crown jewel. Our pinnacle.”
Meanwhile, speaking with Screen Rant, star Kayvan Novak (a.k.a. Nandor the Relentless) said: “I guess a lot of shows end badly, or end s****ily or unsatisfyingly, or kind of ‘What the f*** was that?’ I’d say there was a lot of anxiety . . . Mactar Mbaye on the big risks and big rewards of flipping “hoarder houses”
Junk to Jackpot
Q
What’s the biggest challenge of flipping a “hoarder house” compared to a regular flip gig?
A The biggest challenge with hoarder houses is that you don’t know exactly the shape of the house. There is so much stuff around that you cannot clearly see how much work you need to do. Sometimes you’re very lucky; you remove everything and the bones are good. But sometimes you remove everything and you have bigger problems — structural problems, moisture problems, problems that are not necessarily a good investment for a flip. When you’re flipping, you’re trying to put money where there is that “Wow!” effect when the clients are coming in. But if you’re putting money into the structure, they’re not going to see it. So, that’s the challenge sometimes — you cannot really see what you’re getting into before you’re into it . . . You just have to take the risk. But at the same time — big risk, big reward.
Q You have a background in music. Do you feel like house-flipping is

A Yeah, it’s creativity because as soon as you walk in . . . for some people it could be scary, right? But you need to have a vision and creativity just to imagine how it could look — and not be afraid, and have fun while doing it. You need to have that inside of you tp imagine the design that we could have — we’re going to break that wall, we’re going to do a bathroom there . . .
QYour siblings are in this business with you. Are there any drawbacks to working so closely with family?
AHonestly, I don’t see any downside. They are my family, they know me so well. And the most important thing is that I can trust them. If I have to empty a hoarder house, I can call my brothers — and it’s free! For me, it’s not even considered work. It’s what I love to do, and I’m doing it with my brothers.

MOVIES
he meets fellow psychiatric patient Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), sparking a strange but touching romance between two deeply damaged individuals as he embraces his Joker persona and she emerges as Harley Quinn. Mr. Mom
4:45 p.m., AMC
When automotive executive Jack Butler (Michael Keaton) is unexpectedly laid off, his wife (Teri Garr) re-enters the workforce to support their family while he stays home to take care of the kids. Completely out of his depth, Jack puts his own spin on household chores and eventually figures it out. ★★
Rope

Jean Shepherd narrates his semi-autogiographical tale about a youngster named Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) who pulls out all the stops to convince his parents (Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon) to give him a Red Ryder air rifle for Christmas — even though everyone is convinced he’ll shoot his eye out. ★★★★

Violent Night
8 p.m., Crave1
When a drunken, disgruntled Santa Claus (David Harbour) is trapped in a wealthy family’s mansion on Christmas Eve as an elite team of mercenaries attempt to rob them of millions, St. Nick makes like John Wick by taking out the bad guys, one at a time, in this surprisingly effective blend of action and comedy. ★★
Eight Crazy Nights
11:45 p.m., AMC
In this animated adult comedy based on a line from his holiday hit “The Chanukah Song,” Adam Sandler plays a boozy underachiever with a criminal streak who lands a break when he’s sentenced to coach a kids’ basketball team rather than go to jail. ★★
Thelma & Louise
6 p.m., AMC
When Louise (Susan Sarandon) murders a would-be rapist in the parking lot of a roadhouse bar, she and bestie Thelma (Geena Davis) go on the run, embarking on an empowering road trip in a 1966 Ford Thunderbird while trying to evade a cop (Harvey Keitel) who’s on their trail. ★★★
The Santa Clause
8 p.m., CBC
Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) inadvertently causes Santa to suffer an accident, and then discovers that he has no choice but to take over. Powerless to do anything as his belly swells and his beard grows long and white, he reluctantly embraces his new role while trying to hide it from his family. ★★★
Meet Me in St. Louis
5 p.m., TCM
Judy Garland heads the cast of this beloved 1944 musical in which a woman and her sisters face the prospect of upheaving their lives when their father’s job forces them to move to New York from St. Louis in the months leading up to the 1904 World’s Fair. ★★★
Juror #2
8 p.m., Crave1
The latest from director Clint Eastwood is a courtroom thriller in which a family man (Nicholas Hoult) becomes a juror on a high-profile murder trial, facing a moral dilemma when he realizes he has information about the crime that could exonerate the accused killer — but at a huge cost to himself. ★★★

THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT
Friday, Netflx
With so much to divide human beings on this planet, it has become increasingly difficult to make a broad, sweeping statement that rings true for everyone. But chances are that at some point in time, we have all needed a boost in morale. In fact, to borrow from the great British author Jane Austen, one could even say that this fact “is a truth universally acknowledged.”
For some in our day and age, low morale could stem from something like a personal loss, a change in one’s financial or medical situation, or a global pandemic. For others, like those in Netflix’s newest drama, low morale is a pandemic in and of itself.
In the war epic The Six Triple Eight, multi-hyphenate filmmaker Tyler Perry joins forces with actress and entrepreneur Kerry Washington to tell the remarkable story of a group of women who dedicated themselves to boosting soldier morale during the Second World War. Tasked with a daunting and perilous duty, members of the Black women’s U.S. Army battalion, known collectively as the 6888th, risked their lives to deliver a backlog of undelivered mail to American soldiers on the front lines.
Billed by Netflix as “the inspiring story of [the Second World War]’s only Women’s Army Corps Unit of colour,” The Six Triple Eight is a period drama which focuses on “the quiet heroism of everyday individuals.” Nearing the end of
WOMEN AT WAR
Tyler Perry tells the incredible true story of an Army battalion of Black women who risked their lives to deliver mail to troops on the frontlines during the Second World War
the war, soldier morale was at an all-time low as battles dragged on all over Europe and several supporting efforts continued on the home front. Due to the massive loss of life and increasingly dangerous
conditions abroad, much of the United States’ outgoing mail — which largely consisted of messages of hope and important news from loved ones — failed to reach its intended recipients overseas.
Aware of the ever-growing backlog, philanthropist, educator and human rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune (portrayed by Oprah Winfrey) approached then-first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (Academy Award-winner Susan Sarandon) to discuss the creation of a military unit to address the nearly 17 million pieces of mail for delivery, some of which dated back as far as three years. Thus, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, or Six Triple Eight, was born, and Major Charity Adams (Washington) was assigned as its strong and capable leader.
The idea for The Six Triple Eight came to writer/director Perry as something he felt called to after having been approached by producer Nicole Avant (Wag the Dog), who wished to film a movie based on a Kevin Hymel article in WWII History Magazine. The article, titled “WAC Corporal Lena Derriecott and the 6888th Central Postal Battalion,” was an interview with battalion member Lena Derriecott King, whom Perry met later, in preparation for the film. Ninety-nine years old at the time, Derriecott King told Perry “that her decision to enlist was spurred by the death of her friend, a Jewish man named Abram David, on his first combat mission for the U.S. Army Air Forces” (per Backstage).
“She got really emotional, saying to me that he had died within a few weeks of being in the war,” Perry said to the Backstage interviewer. “And to see her emotion after 70-plus years, I thought, ‘Wow!’”
was taken aback to learn about it when Avant first brought the project his way.
“I was quite embarrassed to not know that bit of history,” Perry shared via Backstage. “The very thought of that immediately piqued my interest, but it also [made me] pretty frustrated that these women’s stories had been ignored for all of these years.”
Derriecott King died peacefully this past January, at the age of 100, but her memory lives on through the power of film. Portrayed onscreen by If Beale Street Could Talk actress Ebony Obsidian, the late corporal is honoured alongside 854 of her fellow servicewomen of colour for delivering millions of pieces of mail in less than three months, which was half the allotted time for the unit’s mission.
The story of the 6888th Battalion hasn’t been widely told, and even Perry
This is precisely why, Avant says, she and Perry “have a responsibility” to share this story.
“We’re very aware that we are the promise of everyone who’s come before us and sacrificed for us, physically, emotionally and spiritually,” Avant told Backstage. “Our job is to make sure that their stories and their lives are never forgotten and always celebrated.”
In addition to Washington, Winfrey, Sarandon and Obsidian, The Six Triple Eight also stars Milauna Jackson (How to Get Away with Murder), Kylie Jefferson (Tiny Pretty Things), Shanice Shantay (The Wiz Live! ), Sarah Jeffery (Charmed ), Moriah Brown (Raising Dion), Pepi Sonuga (Queens), Jeanté Godlock (Daybreak), BaadjaLyne Odums (Ruthless), Donna Biscoe (Hidden Figures), Dean Norris (Breaking Bad ), Sam Waterston (Law & Order), Jay Reeves (All American) and Scott Daniel Johnson (Found ). Gregg Sulkin (Runaways) appears as Derriecott King’s friend Abram David. ■
VIRGIN RIVER
Virgin River returns with a sixth season of small-town drama
Thursday, Netfli
ast we visited Virgin River — the small, remote town in Northern California where, despite their differences, everyone ultimately pulls in the same direction — it was Christmas. So, it seems only appropriate that the following season arrives as a Christmas gift for its fans. “I feel like it’s our best season yet,” says Benjamin Hollingsworth, who plays the town’s bad boy, Brady. “I think the writers did a wonderful job this year, weaving the web.”
The final moments of Christmas ’23 set up a whole lot of trouble for the
young veteran who already, in seasons prior, has struggled to find a footing in this town. While the audience knows that Brady’s new love interest Lark (Elise Gatien) is in cahoots with Calvin’s right-hand man Jimmy (Ian Tracey), for the character that has started to explore life on the straight and narrow, this is still news. “He’s lost the love of his life with Brie (Zibby Allen), and he’s trying to be everything that Brie wants him to be with Lark, so he really steps up in all areas of life,” says Hollingsworth. “Of course, we see it’s a slow-motion car crash that Brady does not know is coming.”
Along with Lark and Jimmy’s deception, the season-five finale also set up the discovery of Wes Logan’s buried body, which could
The impending wedding of
and
land Preacher (Colin Lawrence) behind bars. Yet, all of this must make way for the most pivotal storyline of the season: the much-anticipated wedding between Jack (Martin Henderson) and Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge). “It’s rewarding and validating for the audience because they’ve been waiting six seasons for this to take place,” says Hollingsworth. “Season six really brings Jack and Mel back to the forefront. Their story takes up a lot of real estate, and I think that’s rewarding for the fans too, because that’s a big part of what makes the show successful.”
The big event becomes a catalyst for the other characters in Virgin River, whether pregnant Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale), newly-in-love Preacher and Kaia (Kandyse McLure) or conflicted-inlove Brady. “It’s such a small town where
the internet’s still slow, and the gossip’s fast,” says Hollingsworth. “This is a big wedding and I think it heightens the stakes for Brady and everyone involved because they look at this as the pinnacle of every relationship, the moment where two people get married. So, all these relationships are being affected.”
If the poster for the sixth season didn’t give it away, their awkward moment under the mistletoe in last season’s finale certainly set up some lingering feelings between Brady and Brie. “A rock and a hard place, that’s where you can deliver Brady’s packages. He’s always right there, no matter how hard he tries,” laughs Hollingsworth. “In Lark he sees someone who is similar to himself, had a rough upbringing and is really in need of a second chance. He’s there for her and he’s invested, but it’s not the same. What he had with Brie, it remains sacred and special.”
While Hollingsworth doesn’t know who Brady ultimately ends up with, he continues to play his interactions with Allen as if these two could still be #endgame. “I am very careful to play the scenes with Brie and Lark differently, even though he’s falling for Lark,” he says. “Zibby, who plays Brie, we have a dynamic and a shorthand that you rarely get, and when you do get it, it’s a lot
of fun to play with because it’s just like playing catch, back and forth, back and forth. Even my wife is a Brie and Brady fan. She actually cried in season five when we broke up. So, I’m very careful to make sure that I play that like Brie is always going to be the love of his life.”
Adding something extra to an already emotionally heightened season is Henderson, who goes behind the camera to helm his first episode as a director. “Oh my gosh, he’s so good,”
says Hollingsworth. “It was such a pleasure being directed by him and working with him. He is such a kind, thoughtful and empathetic person in general, and such a team leader on set. He was equally as thoughtful, collaborative, encouraging, warm, while directing, but he had this insider perspective on everything, so he was able to offer an insight to playing scenes that I hadn’t thought of before.” That the set is a friendly and extremely supportive one shouldn’t come as a surprise. “It’s very much a communal family experience,” says Hollingsworth. “That’s why I love working on the show so much. It’s such a great workplace.” In fact, we should probably all take a page from the Virgin River playbook. “Maybe we lean a little bit more into the spirit of what it’s like to be part of a small town and we can all get back to getting along,” says Hollingsworth. “We’re all in this together.” ■
INSIDE THE UPDATED REBOOT OF HIT 1999 THRILLER CRUEL INTENTIONS
CRUEL INTENTIONS
Prime Video
hen Cruel Intentions was released in 1999, the cult film not only cemented the careers of Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, it captured the attention of legions of millennials
who were perhaps unfamiliar with its 1782 source material, Les Liaisons
Dangereuses. As the story of deception and unrequited love makes its way to screens once again, this time as a series, creators Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman reflect on the timeless and juicy aspects of this tale and its ’90s adaptation. “Dangerous Liaisons was for adults, and [Cruel Intentions] kind
of made it into a different version of the story,” says Goodman. “Kids acting like adults was a big part of that — plus, who doesn’t love stepsiblings?”
In the latest iteration of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic, hotfor-each-other stepsiblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) scheme to seduce the virginal vice president’s daughter Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), when their Greek life hierarchy comes under threat. Bringing a dignitary’s daughter into the fold will restore their status, and, in the process, the scheme will entertain the half-siblings. As in all versions, the cruelty of those in power takes centre stage. “We think of this as a new iteration of an old story about people with privilege having fun at other people’s expense,” says Goodman.
The 1999 version, which Hook first saw in her early teens, left such an impression that when she prepared for her audition, she couldn’t help but channel Gellar’s version of the manipulative character. “We were encouraged to not mimic those performances and to make it our own. I was like, ‘They’re saying in the breakdown that they don’t want it, but
I think they’re lying, and I think they do want that,’” she recalls. “But then, in the actual callback, hearing what they really wanted, it’s like, ‘OK, I get it.’ And then we just found [Caroline] together.” Her castmate Burgess decided to stay away from the film entirely, to avoid that very dilemma. “I didn’t want to replicate the wonderful job that Ryan did and made such a cult classic,” he explains. “I found such a sweet spot with Lucien towards
the end of filming, and I’m really excited to see if he’s able to progress. So, I think I’ll probably stay away.”
Fisher and Goodman are acutely aware of their fortune in finding the right actors for a script that requires skillful adapting to tonal shifts. “It’s complicated language. It’s a lot of language. There’s a comedic element, there’s the manipulation, there’s the sexual element, and there’s a depth underneath all of it,
and so we just knew we just needed to wait and find exactly the right people, which we did,” says Goodman. Similarly, finding the right person for the role would inject compassion into the text. “We have that satirical quality, and I think the casting really helped us with that,” says Goodman. “In terms of all of the actors, you can feel their humanity, and I just think that people will love them and love to hate them, and those are the best characters on TV.”
Whether portrayed by Hook and Burgess, Gellar and Philippe or Glenn
Close and John Malkovich, the roles of the scheming villains would demand undeniable charm mixed with real vulnerability. “One of the more challenging pieces of it was, while maintaining this mean girl-persona, I still had to make her a real person,” says Hook. “That was interesting for me. You can choose to play a caricature version of these characters, but Sara and Phoebe really wanted us to be grounded humans at the end of the day. Finding that balance was super rewarding.” In the process, Burgess also learned to embrace a quality he didn’t think he possessed. “It was a type of confidence that I don’t think I inhabited before,” he says. “It pushed me to really step out of my comfort zone and play with this character that was super wacky and out there. And stepping from such a bold character into this man that actually cares for people, it was a big shift. So, [the work] pushed me in all sorts of ways.”
Whatever shape Les Liaisons Dangereuses takes, there is no doubt that the sexy conspiracy of the origin
story still holds strong. “I mean, it is privileged people entertaining themselves,” states Goodman. “I think everyone wants a glimpse into a world that they’re not allowed into, and ultimately that’s what the show does. This is a world that everyone wants in on and it seems amazing, and inside is a little more messed up than they hoped. Who doesn’t want to see those people have their own problems, challenges and fun?” ■
STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW
Tuesday, Disney+
ne kid with a big imagination sends himself and his friends on an unbelievable adventure across the galaxy in the new Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Set in the New Republic era, this family fantasy series stars Ravi CabotConyers (Encanto) as Wim, a young student on a peaceful planet whose head is firmly planted among the stars. His desire for adventure sends him and his friends KB (Kyriana Kratter), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) blasting through space.
Deep in a forest, the four friends discover what appears to be an abandoned Jedi temple. Quick to explore it, one wrong step sends them catapulting across the galaxy. Lost in space and trying to find their way home, the crew teams up with a mysterious, possible Jedi, Jod Na Nawood (portrayed by Jude Law). Across the eight-episode series, states the press release, “finding their way home — and meeting unlikely allies and enemies — will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
Also starring in the new series are Kerry Condon and Tunde Adebimpe, while Nick Frost lends his voice to droid SM-33, a character that series co-creator Jon Watts described to People as “a rusty old, cranky droid that sort of reluctantly helps the kids along the way . . . The other thing about him is that he’s the first mate of a mysterious ship.”
Law also spoke to People about joining the famed franchise with Skeleton Crew, saying, “It is a fun place to be, the universe of Star Wars. There are great references to old films and recent episodes and series. There’s a lot of originality and I hope that will bring the feeling of fun to those who watch it.”
The key words “fun” and “originality” can also be used to describe a big reveal about the upcoming series. Episode director David Lowery told Empire that the Teek, creatures only previously seen in the mostly forgotten made-for-TV Ewok movies from the mid-1980s, make a grand reappearance in the new series.
Everywhere All at Once, were behind the camera for an episode of Skeleton Crew. But they didn’t land the gig by sweeping up at the Oscars that year. Watts had his finger on the pulse when he asked the pair if they would step in to direct an episode before their breakthrough film was even released, Kwan shared in a social medial post.
“I was most excited about having hand puppets on set,” Lowery said about the practical magic behind the space critters.
“It’s the most ancient technology being used with the most cutting-edge technology, simultaneously,” he added. “That combination was absolutely magical,” Lowery shared about mixing media to make both the puppetry and the special effects come to life. About seeing it all come together, he said, “In the final episode it’s just a hand puppet in the middle of this crazy Volume set. The cognitive dissonance of seeing those two things together, live in front of you, is absolutely incredible.”
It’s no surprise that the coming-of-age series skews a bit younger than most of the films’ and other live-action spinoff series’ demographics with its troupe of students at the centre of the story, but like all sagas in the Star Wars franchise, the stakes for these kids are high. To nail the signature mix of danger and thrills that Star Wars fans of any age can appreciate, Skeleton Crew scored some exciting episode directors to bring the upcoming series to life.
The directing duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known as “The Daniels,” who took home three Academy Awards for their 2022 film Everything
The Daniels’ frenetic and zany visual style of storytelling is a natural fit for a space adventure series, especially one bridging the gap between newcomers and lifelong fans. The series seemed to bring the kid out in everyone, including cast member Condon, who also worked on the series before her own big year at the Oscars with 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin.
In an interview with Variety in April, Condon revealed: “I don’t even have kids, but I’d pay to see this. I loved it. I loved being on it. There was something about it that was so innocent and playful and lovely.” She also praised her co-stars, adding, “When children are good actors, they’re kind of out-of-thisworld good. So watching some of the kids’ scenes, it was amazing.”
Skeleton Crew joins two other live-action Star Wars series with new seasons in the works: Andor: A Star Wars Story, set to return for its second and final season next April, and Ahsoka, which was renewed early this year. Meanwhile, the fourth season of The Mandalorian remains in limbo. ■

Kraven the Hunter
STARRING: Aaron TaylorJohnson, Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose
The latest addition to the big-screen superhero pantheon tells the origin story of one of the comics’ most iconic villains, Spider-Man nemesis Kraven the Hunter (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, recently seen in The Fall Guy). Born Sergei Kravinoff, Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, while also motivating him to become not just the greatest hunter in the world, but the most feared. The fact that Kraven is the firstever movie in Sony’s Spider-verse to receive an R rating (for “strong blood violence,” no less) suggests the film is both action-packed and not for the weak of heart.

The Lower Decks Crew
BY MATT CURRIE
STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS
Thursday, 7 p.m. & 10:30 p.m., CTV Sci-Fi; Paramount+ (Stream)
QDid you all know season five was the end before you started recording?
AJACK: It could go other places, so we’re trying not to think of this as “the end.” We’re trying to think of it as, hopefully, a pause. But we didn’t really know; it was a tough thing to hear, to have that news broken to us, because we just loved doing this show so much. And I know I’m speaking for all of us when I say we’d play these characters till we’re dead.
NOËL: They had to do rewrites. Once we found out, they had to make changes and we had to come back in to re-record. But I think [the farewell] is handled in a nice way.
EUGENE: Yeah, I think it’s leaving this season in a place where, like all Trek, you never know what’s going to happen next.
QTawny and Jack, you got to bring Mariner and Boimler to live-action
on a crossover with fellow Trek series Strange New Worlds last season. Did that affect your sense of these cartoon characters?
ATAWNY: It was great. I wanted to do it forever. That’s always the type of role that I want to play, and I don’t often in liveaction get to play roles like her. As soon as we finished it, I was like, “This is going in the front of my goddamned [acting] reel so that I can actually get cast as this type of role.” Because she kind of just feels like me. I don’t want to play judges and DAs and stuff. I want to do more Mariners . . .
JACK: You want to stir the chaos . . .
TAWNY: I want to crash a truck into a JOANN Fabrics. I don’t want to fold my arms and be like, “Oh, court was hard today, honey.” So, any casting directors out there listening: Stop calling me in for the things you’re calling me in for. I want to be a nightmare, thank you!
JACK: I’m pretty sure I do a lot more mannerisms in the voiceover booth now [after the Strange New Worlds episode].
TAWNY: I see you do Boimler moves in real life, and it’s like, what imitated what? Was the art first or the man?
JACK: I don’t know anymore . . . I was just
at “Halloween Horror Nights” at Universal Studios and there were so many Boimler screams; it just came out of me.
QOther than comedy, what did Lower Decks add to the Star Trek world that wasn’t there in any of the other shows?
AEUGENE: I think what it brought that is different is, “It’s OK to be starting out.” There’s a beginning for everybody. It’s not always the people at the top of their game that you should be watching. Watch the people that are working their way up to make something of themselves. You want that from the franchises that you love, so that you feel like you can be part of it . . . It’s OK to be young and stupid.
TAWNY: And it’s focused on the things that other Trek shows wouldn’t waste real estate on — smaller-stakes stories, little B-plots about character-driven moments. “Twin Twains” — two people trying to sort out an argument about a bonsai tree by dressing up as Mark Twain — is not something, verbatim, that would’ve been in TNG. As I meet fans, so many of them are like me — in that we think about this world as though it’s real. I know dates from Trek history better than I know actual American history; I cannot tell you when World War Two started, but I know exactly when the Eugenics War was. So, what this has done is given those people who do think of it like a whole, real world little windows into other parts of it, to see the underbelly and the more casual, downbeaty side . . . Show us what the bathrooms look like on the Enterprise. Please! I just want to see the weird stuff.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell in our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
