The sweetest heist in history
Worldwide headlines were made back in 2012 when more than 3,000 tons of maple syrup, worth nearly $18 million, was stolen from a “strategic reserve” situated north of Montreal.
What came to be known as the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist is now the inspiration for The Sticky, a new six-episode series debuting this week on Prime Video.
The series takes some huge liberties with the facts — “this is absolutely not the true story,” declares a trailer — and should be considered fiction; while the actual ringleader of the scheme was maple syrup broker Richard Vallières, The Sticky ’s criminal mastermind is Ruth Landry (threetime Emmy-winner Margo Martindale), described as “a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves.”
Ruth is devastated to learn that recent actions taken by the association controlling Canada’s maple syrup threaten the loss of her farm. That’s when she meets Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos), a hot-headed Boston mobster, and Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr), a mild-mannered (and not too bright)
French-Canadian security guard at the facility where the association’s maple syrup is stored. When Remy reveals the warehouse has no security cameras, and the stock is only checked once a year, the three hatch an audacious scheme to steal it.
The Sticky is co-produced by Jamie Lee Curtis’ Comet Pictures, and the Oscar-winner has given herself a juicy supporting role as a gun-toting mob assassin.
As Curtis said in a statement, she connected with the story of “an older woman whose life is being ruined by bureaucratic men and her deciding to finally stop taking their s**t. It’s the beginning of a crime story that will make for funny and riveting television.”

The British drama about real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington has yet to be renewed by U.K. network ITV or U.S. network

AND THE OSCAR (HOSTING GIG) GOES TO . . .
I really just can’t get enough of Conan O’Brien. Loved his travel show. Is he doing any more stuff on TV soon?
J.M., West Vancouver
Rest assured that, in addition to his wildly successful podcasting on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, the beloved former late-night host is already at work on a second season of his
Max/Crave travel show Conan O’Brien Must Go — which, for the uninitiated, finds Conan traversing the globe to surprise fans of that aforementioned podcast with an in-person visit, then soaking up the culture. In even more exciting news, the man they call “Coco” has just been tapped to emcee the next Oscars, coming up on Sunday, March 2. It will be his first time hosting the Academy Awards, but the gig does come after well-received stints hosting the Emmys in 2002 and 2006.
As Academy president Janet Yang and CEO Bill
Kramer said in a release: “We are thrilled and honoured to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humour, his love of movies and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best — honour the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”
For his part, O’Brien quipped, “America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”

The exact timing has yet to be announced, but in an interview with Variety, co-stars Bell and Brody confirmed that the show will start filming its next chapter in February.
Digging into exactly what it was about Nobody Wants This that everybody seemed to want, Bell opined: “It feels like we have the field to ourselves for a moment. There was a ton of really great, intense, hardcore television that Breaking Bad inspired — rough-and-tumble watches — and something lovely in the rom-com space hadn’t been felt by the masses in a while.” She then cheekily added: “I don’t know if someone is tracking this or it’s just numbers in my head, but about seven people told me they started watching the show because their dads recommended it. I have been trying for some years, every Christmas, to find a movie about Santa that starred the actor who played Radar on M*A*S*H, but I always come up empty. I would love to see it again, but don’t even know the title in order to search for it . . .
F.V., Aldergrove
That search will be a tough one! The film you seek is from 1979 and was called The Man in the Santa Claus Suit. It was a made-for-TV movie that aired on NBC one time only, and has never had an official DVD release in North America.
It stars the legendary Fred Astaire in his final appearance on film before his death eight years later. Bob Willis (Gary Burghoff from M*A*S*H ) is one of three men who rent Santa suits from an odd shopkeeper (Astaire) who appears later in the movie as a chauffeur, a policeman, a hot dog vendor, a cab driver and a jeweller (as well as a character who shall not be named here, as it is a spoiler!).
Willis is in love with a young woman who is engaged to someone else, and comes to hope that the magic of his Santa suit will turn things around. The second suit-renter is Stan Summerville (comedian John Byner), who was once an up-andcoming chef, but is now down on his luck; for him, the Santa suit is actually a disguise for a robbery in which he is participating. Finally, Gil Travis (game show host Bert Convy) rents the get-up to try and score points with his estranged son.
Because of the Christmas theme, things work out quite happily for all.

STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW
Tuesday, Disney+
Disney+ expands its small-screen Star Wars universe yet again with a series that’s giving off some serious Goonies vibes.
The somewhat-cryptic synopsis describes it as centring around four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their safe home planet that rockets them off on an outer-space adventure, followed by a perilous quest to get back home. Much as the show may be focused on the youngsters, the true headliner is Jude Law, as an outer-space swashbuckler. As he told StarWars.com: “I first discovered Star Wars when the first film was
released in the cinemas in London where I was growing up. And I remember it just blowing my tiny mind . . . To be invited to be a part of this universe was a true thrill. There’s something to be said for the play-acting as a child having some sort of responsibility for becoming an actor and assuming roles. Running around wanting to be space pirates or saviours in that world was a leap of the imagination, which is really at the heart of what my job is.”
Co-creating the show is Jon Watts, director of another larger-than-life coming-of-age saga: the Tom Holland Spider-Man flicks.
Another coming-of-age story hits the streaming world this week, as Netflix invites us to reimagine Mary, Mother of God.
The new film from Disturbia director D.J. Caruso stars Noa Cohen as Mary and Ido Tako as Joseph — who undertake a perilous quest for survival after Mary’s miraculous conception and birth of the Messiah leads to the family being shunned by their community and, worse yet, hunted by those who
are threatened by what her newborn baby represents for their own corrupt stranglehold on power. Specifically, that would be King Herod, played here by two-time Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins
All told, the movie is said to present viewers with a tale of faith and courage, made in consultation with an array of religious experts, ultimately “revealing a side of the Queen of All Saints we rarely see on screen.”

for Tudum, Wong said: “Sometimes finding your selfidentity is coming face-to-face with your own demons.”
Added creator Echo Wu: “If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would take it very well. I think she would actually hide it. She would think it’s social suicide to have powers in a time of your life where you’re trying to fit in and be cool. It was an interesting dynamic to play with.”
The screenwriter behind Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and, perhaps most iconically of all, Love Actually brings us another holiday yarn. But here, Richard Curtis isn’t exploring the bittersweet chaos of looking for love. Rather, this film is a cartoon adaptation of Curtis’ series of heartwarming-yet-clever children’s books.
Sporting an anthology structure, the piece tells an array of stories about the highs and lows of the snowy season. “I hope it’s going to be a film that makes people happy — perhaps more than once,” Curtis said in an interview with Tudum. “I hope it’ll remind people of the joy and complexity of Christmas, and some of the joys and comedy and
heartbreak of childhood. And then there’s a very special thing for me, that the film takes place in a town very much like my own in Suffolk. I hope they’ll love the sense of the place — and go away with a new, delightful, simple English world in their heads.”
Added the pic’s director, Simon Otto: “This movie tells the story of a troubled Christmas, forcing a group of kids and parents to accept that you can’t always plan life. Life is chaotic, relationships are messy and traditions sometimes must be re-evaluated.”
The sterling voice cast includes Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker and Love Actually’s Bill Nighy — plus, Succession alum Brian Cox as Santa!

One of the most enduring, iconic, brain-teasing game shows in television history is getting another spinoff.

Plus, the categories are, as the title suggests, a little less highfalutin. Subjects include film, TV, stage, music and sports.
Hosting it all is Saturday Night Live “ Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost — a fitting choice given the numerous SNL sketches that have mined their yuks from parodies of Jeopardy! over the years.
Teasing the show on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast (via TV Insider), producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss mused on how exactly Jost, as emcee, changes the game.
“The way he can intersperse comedy within the Jeopardy! format is something like I have never seen

Further teasing what fans are in for, Sony Pictures Television president of game shows Suzanne Prete said in a release: “Pop Culture Jeopardy! is going to be a nail-biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of Jeopardy! combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind . . . CMA COUNTRY CHRISTMAS
Tuesday, 8 p.m., ABC
Yes, it seems the good folks at ABC simply cannot get enough holiday cheer — because we’ve got yet another special to tell you about.
The Country Music Association sings in the season with its 15th annual CMA Country Christmas on Tuesday. Alas, at time of press, details were zilch when it came to the evening’s lineup, or even its hosts. The only tease offered by the network was that it would feature “one-of-a-kind musical performances of festive classics from country music’s biggest stars.”
Last year, they certainly delivered on that promise in the form of a duet between Ashley McBryde and Lindsey Stirling, belting out what might just be the new,
definitive version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”
All told, regardless of which superstars hit the stage (Dolly Parton? Carrie Underwood? Reba McEntire?), audiences are in store for an hour of show-stopping talent and wholesome spirit.
As Charles Kelley, a member of super-group Lady A, told CountryNow. com when he performed at the event last year: “I think what makes CMA Country Christmas so special is it’s just something that the whole family can watch. It’s hard for us to find shows that the kids can watch and that we can enjoy at the same time. And [it] just gets you in the spirit, gets you excited. It really is kind of a part of our tradition now.”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures give at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Hallmark teams up with Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs for a football-inspired rom-com
HOLIDAY TOUCHDOWN: A CHIEFS LOVE STORY
Saturday, 8 p.m., W Network
iven where Hallmark is headquartered, it’s little surprise that if the Missouribased greeting card and media company were to partner with an NFL team, it would be the Kansas City Chiefs.
A very evident result of that new deal between the brands is Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story. Many of the Chiefs players and their head coach, Andy Reid, appear in the movie, featuring frequent Hallmark talent Hunter King as a member of a Chiefs-cheering family vying to win a “Fan of the Year” contest. Fellow Hallmark regular Tyler Hynes also stars as the team’s fan-engagement director, who surveys the finalists, and when he meets King’s character . . . well, take a guess what happens.
The Holiday Touchdown cast also includes Ed Begley, Jr., NBC weekday personality Jenna Bush Hager, Diedrich Bader, Megyn Price, Richard Riehle, dual Tony Award-winner Christine Ebersole and — as the manager of the central family’s restaurant — Donna Kelce,
whose Chiefs tight-end son knows a bit about intermingling football and romance (though he’s not in the movie).
Holiday Touchdown writer Julie Sherman Wolfe admits that the widely observed and followed love story of Travis Kelce and music superstar Taylor Swift was “sort of a jumping-off point” for the script. “And then, the short that the Chiefs produced for the playoffs [a parody of Hallmark Channel movies] was kind of the next part. Honestly, I feel so strongly about the passion that fans have for the game of football, I think it transcends a particular team. If you didn’t know I was a [San Francisco] 49ers fan, you would think that I was a Chiefs fan.”
Newly engaged actress King notes that “we’ll take all the Swifties we can get” when it comes to viewership of the film. “I don’t know who wouldn’t want to watch this movie. It’s based and centred around love and passion and football and Christmas and family, and those are all things that I love and that are so important in my life. And I feel that for a lot of Swifties, that’s kind of her brand as well, so I feel like they would totally dig this movie.”
Hynes deems the new pairing of Hallmark and the Chiefs to be logical, given their respective fanbases. “There’s
a sort of tight-knit, passionate fandom around both, and you can really feel it in both of those locations in Kansas City,” he explains.
While Hynes admits that he’s “not a huge sports guy,” he nevertheless “found myself very, very enthralled in the whole journey of the Super Bowl . . . And I think anybody who is a fan of romance or fans of sports or anything in the vicinity of that will resonate with this story because it’s centred around something that’s universal, which is family, love and a passion for a team or a sport.”
For film and TV veteran Begley, the experience of filming in Kansas City brought about a very different vibe than he’s encountered in Hollywood. “Definitely a different feel,” he says. “The salt of the earth people you encounter on the crew and spectators and people working in the background just break your heart, they’re so lovely.”
According to Samantha DiPippo, senior vice president of development at Crown Media Family Networks (Hallmark Channel’s parent company), the film’s feel-good energy hasn’t just been on the screen. “I feel like we’ve all put our heart and souls into this project,” she says of what’s been a labour of love for everyone involved.” ■
Billy Bob Thornton stars in this new drama from the creator of Yellowstone, taking viewers inside the West Texas oil boom
LANDMAN
Sunday, Paramount+
ny show from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is bound to be high stakes, but from the first moments of Landman, Sheridan’s new series set in the world of oil rigs in West Texas, one can tell that it is life itself that hangs in the balance. Academy Awardwinner Billy Bob Thornton stars as landman Tommy Norris, a crisis executive at an oil company who secures the leases and babysits the owners of the land on which oil is drilled. The first time we see him do his job, Tommy is negotiating land use with a drug cartel from beneath a burlap sack — and that’s not even the most perilous thing he encounters within the pilot.
To viewers that have come to love Sheridan’s worlds, from Yellowstone to Lioness, a perpetually looming danger is only part of the parcel. The other expectation from the multitasking creative is a group of characters that are both so broad and so specific that one can’t help but be intrigued. “It just kind of draws you into this world and you can’t look away,” says newest Sheridan-verse member Ali Larter (Heroes). “He brings in these characters that walk you through the story. Then he interlocks different storylines and everyone comes together to give you a different point of view of what’s happening. He’s incredible at that.”
Buzzing around Tommy are the members of his immediate family, who seem to add an extra layer of challenges
to his already stressful occupation. His 22-year-old son Cooper (Jacob Lofland, The Son) has just started working as a roughneck — a person doing manual labour on the rigs — and no one seems to think he has the physicality or emotional strength for it. Tommy’s daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph, 1923) is pure trouble in a 17-year-old bikini-clad body. And then there is his ex-wife Angela (Larter), who injects a healthy serving of chaos into every situation but wants them all to be a happy family again. “You see her trying her best and giving it her all, but somehow things always go a little bit awry,” says Larter. “It is really fun to watch, the way that she presents herself thinking that she’s the best mother. Most people — everyone — will probably disagree, but she doesn’t see it like that.”
Like most of Sheridan’s unpredictable characters, Angela’s mercurial nature is also what makes her such a joy to portray. “She’s a wildcat,” says Larter. “She’s always looking for the fun, and I think that’s someone who’s really great to go on the journey with.” Tommy’s wife also
has a broad spectrum of feelings. “She goes through a roller coaster of emotions in these scenes, and you never know where she’s going,” adds Larter. “Billy and I really worked on these characters, trying to figure out how to bring different depth to the relationship. The way that they see each other is really beautiful.”
With the speed of a Sheridan production sometimes feeling like a runaway train, Larter praises her co-star for keeping her connected to the track. “He’s just the best. He’s such a generous actor, and he sets the tone for how it’s going to be,” she says. “This was such a huge production. It’s high stakes when you’re shooting with Taylor, and you’re moving really fast. There’s no rehearsal or blocking, and you have to be able to bring it. Billy is able to make sure that he mines the material, but he’s not just a really inspiring actor, he’s also an amazing guy, the way that he treats the crew. He doesn’t lead with his ego. He leads with generosity and gives 110 per cent.”
Landman is based on the successful podcast by Christian Wallace, called Boomtown, about big oil in the Permian Basin. Wallace, a Texan writer who spent
a year as a roughneck in the oilfields, drilling wells, brings a boots-on-theground perspective to the series he co-created with Sheridan. “Taylor’s from Texas and he definitely knows the world of oil. But Christian’s family grew up in the Permian Basin and worked within the oil world and on the oil rigs, so he’s able to bring an authenticity to this show that takes it to the next level,” explains Larter. “There’s just not a false beat, and part of that is because of Christian.”
For Larter, it was an entry into a world she knew little about. “I definitely found out a lot while we were filming — I did not know that there was oil in lipstick,” she says. “I also did a ton of research when I got the job.” Beyond her deep dive into the world of oil, Larter puts her faith in their creator. “This is his vision coming to life, and he has a way of being able to drop into these characters’ minds,” she says. “There were times where I thought it was going to be too over the top — he has a very specific vision for what he wants, and your job is to deliver it. And now that I’ve seen some of the show, I can keep my complete and utter trust in him from here on out.” ■
Emily
Watson and Olivia Williams star as mystical sisters in this anticipated Dune prequel
DUNE: PROPHECY
Sunday, 8 p.m., HBO Canada
Dune author Frank Herbert’s son, Brian, wrote a prequel to his father’s science fiction epic. Sisterhood of Dune, cowritten by Kevin J. Anderson, focuses on the establishment and rise of the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit, the powerful social, religious and political force who have trained their minds to achieve superhuman powers. The prequel is also the origin story of the leader of the sisterhood, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and her sister, Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams). Set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise to power on Arrakis, Dune: Prophecy actually takes place 30 years after the book, allowing showrunner Alison Schapker to lean into the source material while also exploring brand new territory. “We’re interested in Valya Harkonnen’s whole lifetime,” Schapker says. “We’re looking at her upbringing and how she came to the sisterhood. But in the other time period of our series, we’re seeing Valya as a person who has grown the power of the sisterhood and is then faced with a crisis. So, we’re really toggling between two time periods; one that tethers us to the books and one that allows us to create.”
In her role as Second Mother Superior, Watson drew much of her inspiration from the earlier timeline and actress Jessica Barden, who plays the younger Valya. “It was the most wonderful gift as an actress to have somebody play your younger self,” she says. “There is a moment, further down the line in this [series], when Valya’s heart just froze, and
everything she does is fueled by rage and a sense of vengeance. Then, she was spotted by a charismatic cult leader, who said, ‘I see you. You’re very powerful. You’re very special. Very talented. Come and help me shape the future of mankind.’ And that’s an incredibly dangerous thing to do.”
Her sister Tula may initially come across as a younger sibling eager to facilitate her sister’s mission, but Williams hints that her character’s complicity comes at a cost. “I think the secret to playing a younger sister is that you internalize and keep your rage inside and keep it quiet,” says Williams. “But watch out for the quiet ones. And the other thing is, she’s a science nerd, so the way she finds of eliminating her enemies is extremely efficient and quiet.”
While Watson and Williams have known each other since the last century, the two have never shared the screen prior to this project. “Find me a script where there’s a part for two 50-year-old women with equal status in the same story, you know?” says Watson. Even in their younger days, when the two were part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, there was little opportunity for collaboration. “There’s only ever room for one or two women at a time in those stories,” Williams points out.
With our universe finally bringing the two actors together professionally, having these women portray anti-heroes in the Dune universe is a special treat for executive producer Jordan Goldberg “This is a show about the Sisterhood, but the person who’s in charge of the Sisterhood is a Harkonnen. From our knowledge of the movies and the books, we all think that they are vile and evil,” he says. “But we get to go into that story a little more and see that it’s not what you thought it was. Maybe tragedy caused these misconceptions about who they
are. But still, it’s a Harkonnen. We’ve seen male Harkonnens do things very ruthlessly, and now we’re going to see our female Harkonnens and they’re just as bad-ass.”
Never knowing who to root for is one of Frank Herbert’s specialties in creating the Dune universe. Dune: Prophecy, says Goldberg, follows those same traditions on an equally grand chessboard. “The beautiful thing about Frank Herbert’s Dune, is the moral ambiguity of all the characters. At some point you’re dealing with a hero and pretty soon they become the villain and vice versa,” he explains. “In our story, they are 100 years removed from the great machine wars. Humans are now controlling their own destinies. But as Frank Herbert used to say, there’s always an uncertainty out there that you can’t account for. There’s an emotional reason to control everything, to control the future. And that really causes conflict between all these people who have different schemes at play.”
From a creative standpoint, the challenge has been balancing the enormous scope with the dramatic storylines. “The Dune universe is so visceral, specific, deep and provocative. We’re imagining a future where technology that we’re familiar with today has been banned and people are rebuilding humanity, asking themselves, ‘What does it mean to be human?’” says Schapker. “But you can do all the worldbuilding you want, and if you don’t have your characters taking you through the story, it won’t come together. Dune needs to be epic but intimate, so part of our job was to create a spectacle that was immersive, that would make you feel like you were transported somewhere, and really being attentive to our characters and understanding that their relationship to one another, onscreen, is ultimately what is going to carry us through.” ■
Carol Burnett teams up with TCM to pair movie spoofs from her classic variety show with the fims themselves
SUNDAYS WITH CAROL BURNETT
Sunday, TCM
arol Burnett loved spoofing classic movies on her legendary, eponymous 1967-’78 CBS comedy-variety show, so it’s wholly appropriate that she’s now bringing some of those sketches to Turner Classic Movies.
The iconic entertainer joins TCM host Dave Karger for Sundays With Carol Burnett most weeks in December. The series launches this Sunday (December 1), as the 1939 epic Gone With the Wind is paired with the Carol Burnett Show satire “Went With the Wind!,” arguably one of the most famous pieces of humour in television history — in large part due to Burnett’s memorable wearing of a Bob Mackie-designed gown that substitutes a curtain rod for shoulder pads.
“This was my husband’s idea,” Burnett explains. “Brian [Miller] had talked about doing it for a while, and we were at an event for Bob Mackie a couple of months
ago, and there was a panel hosted by Dave Karger. I watch TCM all the time, and we presented this idea to Dave and he jumped at the chance. It was just a wonderful coincidence that we ran into him, and he said, ‘Send me a list of [the movie parodies] you have, and the ones you want to do for this.’ ”
Coming up on subsequent Sundays: Born to Be Bad (1950) followed by Burnett’s “Raised to be Rotten” and Torch Song (1953) attached to “Torchy Song” on December 8; The Heiress (1949) and then “The Lady Heir,” plus A Stolen Life (1946) linked to “A Swiped Life,” on December 15; and finally, Mildred Pierce (1945) connected to “Mildred Fierce” and Double Indemnity (1944) adjacent to Burnett’s “Double Calamity” on December 29. (TCM will be in the midst of a “Classic Christmas Marathon” on December 22.)
A movie lover all her life, Burnett says being able to pay homage to classic actresses she admired was “a dream come true for me. After our version of Mildred Pierce came on, Joan Crawford [who won an Oscar for the film] called me and said, ‘You gave us more production
value than Jack Warner [the studio chief behind the film]!’ Unfortunately, she did not like our takeoff on Torch Song [in which Crawford also starred], and that might have been because the movie wasn’t a success. But the takeoff is very funny.”
Now preparing to reprise her Primetime Emmy-nominated role in the second season of the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale, Burnett laments that TCM couldn’t get the rights to include Love Story (1970) in Sundays With Carol Burnett. She hopes the franchise will fare well enough for the channel to revisit it by focusing specifically on her moviemusical spoofs, which she notes have “original music and lyrics by our [Carol Burnett Show] writers.”
A winner of seven Primetime Emmy Awards (to date) and a Kennedy Center Honors recipient — among her numerous accolades — Burnett has had a relationship with TCM for some time, her narration of a mini-documentary about her friendship with fellow comedy great Lucille Ball being one example. Her return there to co-host Sundays With Carol Burnett is, she believes, “the icing on the cake.” ■

MEMORABLE ROLES:
A standup comic by trade, this native of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, is best known for his turn as old-timey Toronto copper George Crabtree — faithful sidekick of Sherlock Holmes-esque sleuth William Murdoch — on CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries. Popular as ever, the period drama is now in the midst of its 18th season.

STILL STANDING
Tuesday, 8:30 p.m., CBC
QNow being 10 seasons in, do you feel like you’ve more or less “captured” Canada . . . or could you do another 10 and not even scratch the surface?
A
The latter. Definitely “Answer B.” We could easily do another 10. People often say: “When are you going to run out of towns?” And the answer is: “Never.” Every town we go to, there’s five [other towns] in the vicinity that also have an interesting story to tell.
QLooking back, do you feel there were some growing pains in the show’s early episodes?
A
One hundred per cent. I tried to be funny in the interviews — and I quickly learned, you’re talking to people about floods and mine closures and fishery closures. I learned early on that the luxury that I have in the format of the show is that I can just be earnest when I talk to people and get their story . . . then take a few days to ponder it and I get to be funny later, on stage.
Q
Just how different are the sets you do on this show compared to what you would do in a regular standup gig?
AIt’s not like getting up at a comedy club. It’s sort of a cross between a comedy routine and a wedding speech; everybody’s there for a reason, everybody’s on the same side right from the get-go. I mean, at a wedding speech, even if somebody gets up and they’re not funny, no one’s gonna yell “You suck!” from the back of the room and throw a rotten tomato at you.
QYou stop in British Columbia a couple times this season. What’s your experience been like out here?
AI always make a joke that never makes it to the broadcast: “The Men in B.C. Black.” Every time I’m in B.C., I enjoy it so much that I think, “Why don’t I just move to B.C.?” And then the next time I end up in B.C. to do an episode, I think: “Oh my God, I meant to move to B.C.!” The Men in B.C. Black, whenever I leave, they come to the airport and zap me, and I forget my experience. It’s such a beautiful part of the world . . .
Q As much as you and your team plot things out ahead of time, do you also have the chance to just roam around town and try to find things you didn’t plan for?
AYeah, absolutely. We’ve got a shooting schedule and we’ve got people lined up for interviews, but there is a little bit of room for exploration. We were just out in Nova Scotia in a town where a guy
Given that long-running Canadian TV series are a rarity, it’s quite remarkable that Mr. Harris is on not one, but two shows with at least 10 seasons under their belt. Year 10 of Still Standing wraps Tuesday, as Jonny ventures to yet another small town suffering through hard times, chats up the locals and crafts a standup routine devoted specifically, lovingly to them.

genetically engineered giant pumpkins. Then I saw this huge metal sculpture in the town square of a giant pumpkin — this, like, taller-than-me pumpkin. And there was a plaque there, but the plaque was a bit worn away and I couldn’t quite read all of it. The joke there was that this pumpkin, it reminded me of The Tragically Hip. I said, “You’ve got a gourd/Gord that’s become legendary . . . even if you don’t quite get all the words.”
QGiven all of the random facts you pick up doing this series, you must be a very interesting guy to chat with at parties.
A Yeah, I think people are often disappointed that I’m not that funny in a given social setting. But I do have a lot of weird knowledge. Anything that comes up [in conversation] — from uranium to polar bears to “sexing a fish” — I do find I often pipe up with, “You know, I interviewed a person . . .” and then sort of blurt out some outrageously odd information.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell in our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
