The rise of Beatlemania
Peter Jackson’s exhaustive threepart, six-hour Get Back delivered a fly-on-the-wall look at the fraught recording sessions for Let It Be, revealing all the tension and bickering that preceded the bitter breakup of The Beatles
A new Disney+ documentary, however, presents the Fab Four at the opposite point in the band’s career. Produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by David Tedeschi, Beatles ’64 captures the Liverpool foursome’s triumphant first visit to America in all its glory, re-examining the brief period of time in which four mop-topped young Brits transformed into global superstars.
It all began on February 7, 1964, when the plane carrying John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr touched down at NYC’s JFK airport, with the four greeted with an unprecedented level of hysteria that only intensified. Dubbed Beatlemania by the press, the furor engulfed all of America when The Beatles’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show was watched by more than 73 million viewers, becoming the mostwatched television event of its era.
The film features rare footage filmed by documentary filmmakers Albert and David
Maysles, including live performance footage from The Beatles’ first American concert at the Washington, D.C. Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan TV appearances, all painstakingly restored to 4K. Adding context are surviving Beatles McCartney and Starr, who share their remembrances in new interviews, as do fans whose lives were transformed by the band’s timeless music.
“Beatles ’64 presents the spectacle, but also reflects a more intimate behind-thescenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame,” declares the synopsis of what promises to be a mustwatch experience for Beatle fans.

BANKS TO BOW OUT
I’ve really been enjoying the new season of Outer Banks. Any scoop yet on the next season?
J.B., Duncan Netflix recently shared a good news/bad news announcement that the drama about young treasure hunters had been renewed for a fifth season, which will also be its last. In a statement, series creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke promised to give John B and his cohorts a deserving sendoff, revealing that “we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”
BACK ON THE FIELD?
There have been rumours that Ted Lasso might return. Any truth to them?
J.T., Vancouver There is indeed, and wheels are in motion to revive the show for a fourth season, following last year’s apparent series finale. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Television (the studio behind the Apple TV+ hit) has picked up options for three of the show’s stars — Hannah Waddingham (who plays AFC
Richmond owner Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Richmond’s director of football operations, Leslie Higgins).
As Deadline explained, those deals could all be extended, because those actors were contracted via Equity, the U.K. acting union. For cast members who were hired via SAG-AFTRA, however, those contracts have all expired; as a result, the studio is reportedly in the process of inking new deals with Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Juno Temple (Keeley Jones).
The studio behind Ted Lasso is hopeful abour reassembling the cast for a potential comeback season.
Netflix hit Outer Banks will be returning for a fifth and final season.
The story of The Diplomat will continue in a third season, with production already underway.
Of course, the linchpin in the show’s potential comeback has always been Sudeikis, and while his return hasn’t been confirmed, it is looking good. “We are in conversations about season four, and they are very exciting conversations, but it’s still early days,” Warner Bros. TV head Channing Dungey told Variety. “We had always been clear that there wasn’t going to be more Ted Lasso if Jason and team weren’t feeling excited about it, and I can tell you firsthand that he’s in a place where he’s feeling really excited and feels good about it.”
If Ted Lasso does return, don’t expect to see tempestuous footballer Jamie Tarrt, given the unavailability of actor Phil Dunster due to his roles in the upcoming season of Apple TV+ drama Surface and his own Prime Video series, The Devil’s Hour
Meanwhile, other cast members have expressed their desire to return, so even if they’re not able to come back full-time they could still appear in a guest-starring capacity.
ASSIGNMENT EXTENDED
I just binge-watched the new season of The Diplomat. Please tell me it will be coming back!
J.G., Surrey
Good news — shortly before the debut of the second season, Netflix announced it was renewing the acclaimed drama, and production is already underway in New York and London.
In the second season, diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) discovered that a massive explosion in the heart of London wasn’t the work of a rival nation, but was unleashed from inside the British government.
According to series creator Debora Cahn, the upcoming episodes will see Kate navigate terrain that’s even more unfamiliar. “Season three flips the chessboard,” Cahn told Tudum. “In season three, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

I found an Internet item about seldomseen Christmas movies, and went for one called We’re No Angels, largely because it starred Sean Penn and Robert De Niro. It was an OK movie, but had nothing to do with Christmas. Any idea what happened?
E.T., North Vancouver
Internet searches can, on occasion, be a gamble, as you have learned. There’s no great conspiracy here, though. The movie you saw, about a pair of convicts who have been mistaken as priests (and shot, incidentally, in Mission, B.C.), was from 1989, directed by Neil Jordan. The movie you were looking for, We’re No Angels, is from 1955 and stars Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray. The two films share the same title and involve escaped convicts, but the 1989 remake ditched one convict and its yuletide theme. The original is much funnier than the remake, with the convicts escaping from Devil’s Island just before Christmas. They arrive at the French colonial town of Cayenne, where they seek refuge with a poor family that manages a small, failing store. Treated so well by these people, the cons notice that the roof is leaking and decide to fix it for free. They also have a knack for sales, and begin bringing customers into the store, which sees its first real cash infusion in many years. Capping all of that off, the criminals then offer to make a holiday dinner for the family. Things take a bad turn when the store’s owner comes on the scene and decides, in a most Scrooge-like fashion, to make some big changes. Will the spirit of Christmas prevail? No spoilers here.

While visiting family in Pennsylvania, he is randomly, wrongfully implicated in a murder plot deep in the Pocono Mountains. Fighting for both his life and his freedom, Muncie must take a good, hard look at the man he’s let himself become, struggling to find justice in a world

“Someone who has very centrist beliefs, and now they’re being thrust into the world to really hardcorebelieve in something and to re-examine the people that they believed were possible enemies. You realize you have more in common with them than you thought you had in the beginning. I think it says a lot about who we are now and what we’re willing to do. QOne of the things that’s established early on in the show is that Ellis thrives from being dismissed . . .
AYou see how she’s had to deal with life as a Black woman in society working her way through a racist institution. Being undermined, being invisible is something she now uses as a superpower. There are things said to her in certain episodes where you’ll see there is very little reaction from her, because it’s water off a duck’s back. She’s heard that and worse so often before. It’s just like, “Been there, done that. That’s nothing.”
QWhat other strengths does she have as a case-cracker?
AShe has a degree in social psychology. So, she’s all about people — the mind, emotions, how people connect, how people tick. And she uses a lot of that ability to solve cases. It’s not just about physical evidence for Ellis. She always wants to know what joins those dots. It’s not the notes that make the music, it’s the spaces in between.
INSPECTOR ELLIS
QWas it exciting to have your own Columbo, Miss Marple or Luthertype character — where you’re playing the detective the show is named after?
AMy agent rang and said, “Channel 5 are commissioning a new police drama. They want it to be Black, female-led — and they want you to do it.” That, in and of itself, was an amazing thing. Because I would’ve been up for auditioning; I would’ve been like, “Where are those lines? Let me learn them. Let me get this gig.” To be offered it is such an honour and a privilege. I grew up in London. I went to a comprehensive school, it was very multicultural. But my television screen didn’t reflect that. I wasn’t seeing my community, my schoolmates reflected onscreen if they weren’t white. And so, to have this role now is such an amazing thing for me — something I would’ve loved to grow up seeing.

He’s a standup comic known for both intricately crafted setups and profoundly dark punchlines. And this week, Anthony Jeselnik returns to shock and delight us with yet another special: Bones and All. In recent years, comics like Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais have come under scrutiny for their provocative subject matter. For his part, Jeselnik’s concern isn’t whether or not audiences will “cancel” him — but rather, if he’ll run out of ways to surprise them.
As the comedian told Vulture while promoting his last special, Fire in the Maternity Ward: “It’s almost like I’m a magician and [they’re thinking], ‘How is he gonna get out of this? He just chained himself upside down in a water tank — how’s he gonna get out?’ The expectations are higher. It’s just as fun because it’s more difficult when people know who I am. But I’ve noticed people coming to see me are more inclined to follow me down the path, whereas before I had to lure them along.”

with political correctness that people can’t get away with the same things they could before . . . except for me,” he continued in that same interview.
“That’s what I’ve learned — that I’ve somehow been grandfathered in, that I get to do all the things that other comics can’t do anymore. I think part of it is that I don’t complain about comedy. I’m never, ‘Oh, I can’t make this joke; I’m not allowed to do that joke!’ I just find a way to make a joke anyway. I always say John Wick doesn’t complain about how many guys he’s gotta fight; he just goes in and kills everybody.”
As for what to expect from Bones and All, Netflix’s logline is even more cryptic than usual, divulging only that this particular set will find the Pittsburgh native celebrating “20 years of delivering witty, boundarypushing comedy.”

Here, the former Sally Draper and Sabrina Spellman plays a college kid who makes a pact with a fellow freshman (played by Booksmart’s Nico Hiraga) to break up with their high school sweethearts when they both go home for Thanksgiving break.
It’s all part of an age-old teen tradition known as “Drunksgiving.” Sounds simple enough, yet severing those emotional ties will prove exceptionally complicated. And beyond
just hurting the feelings of their soon-to-be exes, this particular Drunksgiving will sorely test the “codependent friendship” of our two charmingly hapless protagonists.
Witty and bittersweet, it’s a coming-of-age saga that engages with that most painful and relatable period where you feel stuck between one phase of life and the next, confused about how exactly to move forward.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Chef Lidia Bastianich pays tribute to changemakers in a new season of Lidia Celebrates America
LIDIA CELEBRATES AMERICA
Tuesday, 6 p.m., WTVS; 9 p.m., KCTS
idia Bastianich loves food. But in truth, the Istrian-born chef’s interest in food is so strong because of her love of people.
With more than 60 years under her belt in the service industry and a stillgrowing cooking education brand that includes a series of popular cookbooks and TV specials, Bastianich is hitting the road one more time to experience some of the best food in America. This time, however, Bastianich has sustainability on the brain as she interviews chefs and entrepreneurs from across the country to find out what drives them to create and share the magic of good food.
A part of the three-time Emmy-winning series Lidia Celebrates America, chef Lidia Bastianich pays homage to her chosen home country in the docuseries’ newest instalment, subtitled Changemakers. Releasing on PBS just in time for the American Thanksgiving holiday, the hourlong special is the public television icon’s way of saying “thank you” to the America she knows and loves.
Having opened her first restaurant — Buonavia in Queens, New York. — with her then-husband Felice in 1971, there is no denying that Bastianich’s knowledge in the kitchen is extensive. But unlike many other celebrity chefs whose public personas come off as aloof, pretentious or downright nasty, Bastianich’s love for people is evident.
As she explained, she’s thankful to live in the United States and how, at every step in her journey, she continues to meet wonderful people doing what they can to make a difference.
“My message is to thank America, because I am grateful,” says Bastianich.
“America is always great,” she later continues, adding, “There are such great people out there . . . respecting each other, helping each other. [With Changemakers] I want to bring [viewers] that beauty that exists in reality in America.”
In the hour-long Changemakers special, Bastianich visits towns and cities in Minnesota, California and Virginia to learn more about what drives other food enthusiasts who are at the forefront of beneficial change.
“Lidia [Bastianich] travels . . . to visit those who work hard to change the availability of healthy food in their
make the perfect addition to salads and pesto.
“The whole idea of [eating] crickets and insects [is ancient],” Bastianich explains. “I’ve travelled to Mexico City, and at the big market I ate ant eggs, I ate chocolate-covered ants . . . In Thailand, they have bugs that [are a] delicacy.”
With insects consumed by more than two billion people globally, Bastianich reflected aloud that perhaps “cultures way before us” — before “the colonial way of eating” — were more in tune with nature and more adept at balancing meals based on local diets. This is something Appalachian-based chef Kari Rushing also spoke to in Changemakers.
The owner and head chef of Vault & Cellar in Middletown, Virginia, Rushing takes a few minutes in the special to prepare what she calls “rabbit food” for Bastianich. Dedicated to reframing
communities and to alter the way we perceive food in America,” reads the PBS news release.
She begins in Minneapolis, meeting with James Beard Award-winning chef and restaurateur Sean Sherman to discuss foods, herbs, flavours and culinary traditions that are important to Indigenous cuisine.
Stopping first at the Indigenous Food Lab located in the Global Midtown Market, Bastianich enjoys a lunch of chili topped with bison birria and a side salad dressed in a juneberry vinaigrette. Later, she visits Sherman at his upscale restaurant, Owamni (a Dakota word for “turbulent water”), to indulge in mushroom tacos, hominy and bison stew, a tepary bean dip and more.
Next on Bastianich’s Minneapolis checklist is the Great Minnsect Show at the University of Minnesota, where she meets cricket-focused power couple Claire and Chad Simons, owners and operators of 3 Cricketeers, a company dedicated to producing, packaging, marketing and selling crickets. Packed with protein in every crunch, crickets are a sustainable source of nutrients and
the historical opinion of Appalachian cooking, Rushing makes delicious meals from ingredients that are readily available, living off the land and being “resourceful.”
In California, Bastianich visits Patricia Miller of Center Plate LLC in Stockton and the kind-hearted volunteers of Inglewood’s Social Justice Learning Institute.
The co-founder of the Black Urban Farmers Association of Stockton, Miller has taken on the task of farming to feed locals in need, many of whom work for organizations that export food away across America. Meanwhile, “SJLI brings produce to their distribution centre, giving away up to 15,000 pounds of produce to community food banks, churches, non-profits and individuals” (per PBS).
For Bastianich, the message is clear: we must pay close attention and be grateful to the world around us.
“There’s so many things that we neglect,” she says. “So [in Changemakers] I go for things that matter to me, the things that I see in America and I want to highlight.” ■
The long-awaited second half of Outlander’s penultimate season brings Claire and Jamie to back to Scotland
OUTLANDER
Monday, 9 p.m., W Network
ime travel is truly not for the faint of heart. Every time you think 20th-century surgeon Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and her 18th-century highlander Jamie (Sam Heughan) will find peace and quiet to nurture their relationship and growing family, a violent obstacle is thrown their way. Last we saw the time- and star-crossed lovers, it was the American Revolutionary War that was posing the greatest threat to their well-being. However, as the second part of the seventh season premieres, Claire and Jamie are temporarily placing American independence into the hands of others as they journey back to home turf.
The return to Scotland, after having become American settlers, is an emotional full circle moment for the characters. “It’s a triumphant return and a bittersweet time in Scotland,” teases executive producer Maril Davis about the hard truths Claire, Jamie and Young Ian (John Bell) are facing. For Ian, in particular, reuniting with his parents Ian (Steven Cree) and Jenny (Kristin Atherton, taking over from Laura Donnelly) is a real time for reflection. “He’s like, ‘Where is my heart now?’ ” says Bell. “He has this new love [in America], but family’s family and I think he feels a real draw to stay there. The big question for him is, ‘Do I look into the past or do I look forward?’ Hopefully he finds those answers in Scotland.”
Also experiencing turmoil at Lallybroch, albeit 200 years later, are Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin), whose son Jeremy was kidnapped by Brianna’s nefarious colleague Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton). Roger and Cousin Buck (Diarmaid Murtagh), the illegitimate son of Dougal McKenzie and Geilis Duncan, decide to travel back in time for Jemmy, but stonetravel being an inexact science, at best, the two end up somewhat sidetracked. “He misses the mark entirely,” says Rankin. “If Brianna finds out that Roger thought of the wrong Jemmy when he was going back, I feel like he’d be in big trouble.”
Experiencing the kind of distress Brianna currently is, her husband’s wrong historical turn is probably better left for later. “It’s just so gutting,” Skelton says of her character’s state of mind. “Brianna has always been quite guarded,
Claire
and Jamie
and her ability to trust people has been an exceedingly jarring journey. With someone like Cameron, she finally is like, ‘OK, we’ve had the misogyny chat, I think we’re pals,’ and then he goes and kidnaps her child. Even with all the stuff Bree’s been through, I think that really takes the biscuit. She’s annoyed at herself — and now she might have lost her husband and a kid.”
As the seventh season was at one point thought to be the series’ last, the combination of three books by series originator Diana Gabaldon means that the latter half of the season offers some quick turns. “Seven B is one of my favourite seasons to date, because there’s so much that happens,” says Davis. “It’s such a rollercoaster ride. Jamie and Claire go through a tumultuous time. William (Jamie’s illegitimate son, played by Toronto native Charles Vandervaart) has quite an awakening. All our characters are put through the wringer and it’s quite an emotional season.”
For the two leads, it is not the edgeof-your-seat plot points that have the most resonance. After playing Jamie and Claire for over a decade, Heughan and Balfe have truly come to cherish the evolution of a relationship that despite its difficulties always finds the love at the core. “It’s been really interesting,” says Balfe. “We met this couple who got married before they even knew each other, and it was a real power struggle
within the relationship because they were trying to find their footing. I don’t think either of them have lost their stubbornness or feistiness, but there has been a softening. It’s been lovely, finding out, ‘What has softened about them? Where do they still challenge each other? Where have they learned about each other better to better support each other?’ ” Regarding the sex scenes that once put the show on the map, Heughan recognizes how an industry change — the addition of an intimacy coordinator — has allowed the characters to meaningfully evolve in that realm as well. “She’s really helped us dig even deeper into what a healthy sexual relationship could be in later years,” he reveals.
With only the eighth season of this epic love story left to air, the impact
Outlander has had — not just on the careers of Balfe and Heughan, but on the Scottish television industry — is becoming clearer by the day. “Scotland has been a huge character of the show,” says Heughan. “And it’s been incredible for Scotland. There were no studios in Scotland and now there are multiple. And I think we’ve also benefited from shooting here, having access to these great locations, to the castles, to the tangible history. There’s a pride in it. I think the crew takes pride in representing Scotland. I certainly do.” ■

Tensions are high as Cobra Kai heads into the home stretch before concluding next year
COBRA KAI
Friday, Netflix
ienvenido a Barcelona, Miyagi-do Dojo! After a long, rocky road of trying to unite the students of Eagle Fang and Miyagi-do, the six fighters chosen to represent the San Fernando Valley dojo arrive at the Sekai Taikai tournament ready to show the world what they are made of. But tensions linger, and the realization that Tory (Peyton List) has gone over to Cobra Kai, once again joining their arch nemesis John Kreese (Martin Kove), puts everyone on edge.
The stakes are high onscreen, but for creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the pressure in getting these five episodes right — the last before the grand finale that will be released in spring of 2025 — was even greater. “We’ve been talking about the idea of doing a world tournament for years,” says Hurwitz. “We wanted this to be something that the fans of Karate Kid have never seen before on the show, which was a next level tournament that amps up the danger, has unexpected twists and turns and different kinds of events than you’ve ever seen before.”
While the fights are bigger and the competition more threatening than in seasons past, the real challenge was to ensure the greatest tournament in the world felt, well . . . great. “Even though

you’re not always in the competition space, it’s always looming and you’re always dealing with a win or a loss, with another fight to come. Being able to keep that pace going without feeling any kind of monotony was something that we strived for,” says Heald. “We’re fortunate to have so many dynamic characters, so many different points of view from the Dojos, so many pieces of conflict to lean into both emotionally and professionally between the adults and the kids, that it felt like one of the biggest storylines we’ve done.”
One of the most emotional arcs is
between Tory and her former friends.
Rather than let her fight angry, after the death of her mother, Daniel’s (Ralph Macchio) decision to force Tory into a time-out pushes her across enemy lines.
“Tory, at the end of part one, is at her lowest place and it’s when you’re at that lowest place that you seek refuge. For her it was with Cobra Kai,” says Schlossberg.
“So, she knows that with the bridges that she’s burned, she now has to be all in.”
But trying to ignore her pain is bound to have consequences. “There’s a lot of emotional turmoil that she still has, and she’s going to be using all that energy
towards her fighting. The question is, is that going to be something that propels her to victory or is it going to stall her?” muses Schlossberg.
Still at odds — or again, depending on your perspective — are dojo leaders Daniel and Johnny (William Zabka).
“These two have had a will to reconcile the situation for a while now, and we’ve seen what that can look like,” says Heald. “We’ve seen them settle into something that feels semi-permanent. We’ve seen that get challenged. We’ve seen it go both ways. Entering the Sekai Taikai, these guys are in what feels like

a final bad place. They’re idealistically on different pages and they’re going to keep it together enough to coach their teams. That clearly isn’t a healthy coaching environment. So, you can imagine what that’s going to do in the competition space.”
As the fights on the show become showier, the creators can’t help but be amazed over how far their cast has come in terms of portraying their own stunts. “Going from season one, where almost nobody, save Billy Zabka, had any ongoing martial arts training — everybody has been in the dojo the
are
whole time since cameras started rolling back in 2017,” says Heald. “Seeing what everybody’s capable of now, we are able to keep our actors on screen with their full face, doing the martial arts, way more than we used to. The performers can’t be more proud of the work they’ve put in, because it reflects itself on screen.”
Where these five episodes now lead is the emotional ending to the series that awakened everyone’s nostalgia for the 1984 Karate Kid movie franchise. “It’s what we’ve all been waiting for,” says Hurwitz. “All the characters that you know and love, you’re going to see
where we leave them. It’s going to be spectacular.” Yet, even if the end is near, the cast and crew see nothing but joy in the completion of the journey. “As we’re putting together the final episodes, it’s emotional because everything that we put into the show, everything fans have invested in, is coming to a giant payoff,” says Schlossberg. “It’s one of these special moments that only happens in television if you’re lucky enough to have a hit show that people like and follow. And this one is even more special than your typical TV hit show, because it’s over 30 years in the making.” ■

Michael Fassbender stars as a deep-cover CIA agent in new espionage thriller The Agency
THE AGENCY
Friday, Paramount+
e all get the call to return home from time to time, whether it’s a literal phone call or the need to return to some old stomping ground. A covert CIA agent ordered to get back to London Station faces an incredibly high-stakes homecoming in the premiere of the new spy thriller series The Agency. Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender stars as Martian, a CIA agent pulled out of his undercover mission to return to the agency’s London office in order to find a missing agent. After disappearing from his former life without a trace so long ago, Martian is reunited with his old flame, Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), a professor of social anthropology who may or may not also be “in the game” — as they say in the international intrigue business.
watch. I believe there’s one type of agent, the insane,” Martian monologues at the doctor, before concluding, “You’re not trying to help me, doctor. You’re worried I may have somehow become sane.”
Sanity and independent thought are liabilities to an agency like the CIA, which relies on its agents to do exactly what they are asked — often at the expense of personal safety and comfort. Having sunk years of his career into the agency, Martian’s latest assignment forces him to face himself both as a man and an agent.
Produced by Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney and his frequent collaborator, producer and director Grant Heslov, the series is based on a French espionage thriller, Le Bureau des Légendes, which followed agents in France’s external security service as they worked long-term undercover missions outside of France.
SERIES PREMIERE
Big boss station agent Bosko (Richard Gere), and Henry, the director of operations (played by Jeffrey Wright), try to keep Martian in line and on task as his mission spills out into a twisted game of espionage. A mentor figure to Martian, Henry does his best to relate to his agent, but it’s clear he is playing both sides in order to get Martian to do the agency’s dirty work.
Part of a team that handles long-term undercover missions for the CIA, Martian is trained to do what is necessary for the job. But what happens when an agent begins questioning his organization? In one particularly tense scene, Martian sits opposite Dr. Blake (Harriet Sansom Harris) in an intimidating slate-grey interrogation room, and tells her exactly how it is.
“Lie to everyone. Pretend to be someone you’re not. Risk your life on a daily basis. No glamour, no exploding
The original series aired for five seasons between 2015 and 2020, garnering international attention, including some highprofile viewers.
“The one thing that I feel terrible about is I probably can’t watch this, because I hate watching myself,” Gere told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview, admitting he and his wife “were hooked on” the original French thriller series. “She’ll watch it on her own — she will, I know her,” he quipped.
Fassbender, too, shared that he connected with the show as a viewer, telling EW, “This doesn’t really happen to me a lot, but I actually thought while I was watching, ‘I wonder what I could do in that role?’ ”
The Irish actor applied a psychologist’s lens to the role, saying, “There are sociopathic elements there where the same rules don’t apply to [Martian] because he knows better and he is effective and gets the job done.”

QBeneath the pulpy mystery aspect of this series, what deeper themes are being explored in Disclaimer?
A
I think there’s the question of truth, fact, lies . . . the ease that it is to believe something because of your own biases — and the danger of that. Also, it’s sort of exploring outrage; when people are outraged, it becomes much easier for them to do things that they once would’ve considered outrageous. And obviously, the nature of family; what does it mean to be a good partner, a good husband, a good wife, and a good father or a good son?
Q
With the sort of literary structure of the series, it also seems to be about the ways in which we craft our own stories . . .
A Yes, and how important — or unimportant — the truth is sometimes. It’s sometimes better to tell ourselves a story where we are the morally virtuous one . . .
Q
What precisely intrigued you about Robert, and the dynamic with his wife?
A
So, there was a little phrase that I asked Alfonso [Cuarón, writer-director] to put in, which was: “I always love being your plus one.” That’s the key. He’s supportive, he admires his wife — but at some level, he’s the “plus one.” He’s on a secondary status to his wife. And this incident that happens allows him to reassert his dominance and become an alpha male. The fact that he can do that while he believes that he’s doing a noble thing . . . you can say that there’s nothing more dangerous than a person who’s absolutely convinced that they’re in the right. It’s a guy who is deeply insecure
MEMORABLE ROLES:
The British funnyman has appeared in such hit films as Sweeney Todd, Talladega Nights and The Trial of the Chicago 7. But he’s most famous (or, perhaps, infamous) for his work as a boundary-pushing satirist, inventing characters like wannabe rapper Ali G, Austrian fashionista Brüno and rabble-rousing Kazakhstan reporter Borat — then unleashing those larger-than-life creations upon the real world to run amok.
CURRENT GIG:
— and there’s a pleasure, after the hurt, in actually destroying her.
Q As a creator yourself, when working with a filmmaker like Alfonso, do you watch and try to pick up some tricks?
AThat’s part of the reason why I work with directors occasionally like Alfonso or Scorsese or Tim Burton or Tom Hooper It’s weirdly . . . I want to do the role, but I also want to learn stuff. They’re some of the greatest directors who are living, and you come out of it and say, “Oh, this is a great way to rehearse the scene, and to transform the scene.” When I did a movie called Hugo with Martin Scorsese, I asked whether I could sit with him for the scenes that I was not in. I was really kind of a student.
QHow does an acting gig like this one compare to Who Is America? or Borat?
AOh, it’s completely different. With a show like Who Is America?, half the job is trying to get out without being arrested or
This seven-part thriller from Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) casts Cate Blanchett as Catherine Ravenscroft, a TV journalist whose own dark secrets are brought into the spotlight when she’s sent a mysterious novel inspired by her sordid past. Cohen plays her conflicted husband, Robert.
go to the hospital. Here, there are different challenges. There’s a lot of pressure to put in a good enough performance, but the risk is never there. The risk is humiliation . . . just being crap in a piece of art [laughs].
QEven without that risk, it must be intimidating to step in front of a camera opposite Cate Blanchett . . .
AIt’s nerve-wracking. You’re performing in front of one of the greatest living directors and one of the greatest living actors. And some of these scenes were incredibly demanding. There’s one scene that was 15 minutes long; I can’t remember what it ended up as [in the final edit], but Alfonso was adamant that we had to shoot it in one go [with no cuts]. It was the scene where he confronts her with the photographs, and I’m shouting in it and crying. I think we did, like, 17 takes in a row So, yeah, it was demanding — but I did have a trailer with a bed in it, so I can’t really complain.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell in our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues.
