Connected by Design
Late last week, I spent a chilly (but thankfully dry!) winter’s night wandering around Vancouver’s Armoury District with a colleague. Dozens of stores in the neighbourhood were hosting a block party—complete with flutes of sparkling at tile store Ann Sacks, spicy chai at East India Carpets and goblets of red wine at Provide Design Gallery—and as we made our way from place to place, I was struck both by how reliably Vancouver’s design community turns up to support each other, and by just how much the neighbourhood has transformed over the last decade. And East India Carpets founder Ravi Sidhoo is the visionary who spearheaded the rebirth of that area into a true design destination—and a vibrant, lively community of independent businesses that we in the West are lucky to have.
You’ll find those shops, along with more than 100 others, in our first semi-annual WL Design Guide (page 45). It’s an all-in-one-place directory of the best design shops in Western Canada, from the top spots for sourcing a Maax bathtub to the savviest stores to get your smart home set up, stat. Whether you’re mid-renovation, planning a complete new build or still just dreaming of ways to update some small corner of your current home, the WL Design Guide is the perfect source to keep at your fingertips.
That Armoury District block party was also an excellent vantage point for seeing some real-world examples of the 2023 design trends we’ve highlighted in this issue (“Come Together,” page 25). Writer Barb Sligl spotlights the coolest ideas coming out of the world’s biggest furniture fairs, finally back in person again. My personal favourite? That would have to be the comfy “soft launch” look—and anyone who, like me, had the chance to take a block-party break in one of Brougham Interiors’ incredibly cozy sheepskin-covered lounge chairs would understand exactly why.

The Look Home Sweet Home Office
For some, a blank slate can be intimidating; for others, it’s an opportunity. “We started with just four white walls,” says interior designer Neelam Gurm, who gleefully transformed an underused, ho-hum space into a home office where her clients—a young professional couple working in health care and consulting—could find both comfort and inspiration. Brass drop-pulls provide a traditional touch; the brushed gold details and solid oak desktop add even more warmth while the buttery-soft leather chair and textured rug bring a hominess to the workspace. But the arched, built-in MDF bookshelf, painted a headturning sage green, is the real star of the show here. “It’s the details—a bold paint colour, arches, cutouts, hardware—that elevate simple millwork,” says Gurm.

FORMER GLORY
A lively modern coffee shop moves into an unfussy West Vancouver structure.
By Alyssa Hirose / Photos by Ema Peter
“The construction of the building was really interesting—you would never be able to get away with something like that nowadays,” says Antoine Morris with a laugh. Morris is the principal of Vancouver-based architecture firm DAE, and the “interesting” structure he’s referring to is a massive, pitched-roof solid timber building in West Vancouver. The property has been recognized as a kind of community hub since the early ’60s, when it held a gas station and a grocery store.
“It was in disrepair, and the owner saw it as a jewel that he wanted to bring back,” says

TAKE THE WHEEL
Building owner Guff Muench has a vintage car collection, and a bright red Isetta greets guests. It’s a fitting model: the car is Italian-designed and German-built (Muench is German and café GM Thomas Eleizegui is Italian).
LIFE CYCLE
The Colnago Master Pista bicycle mounted on Isetta’s wall is one of a kind and custom-painted by iconic graffiti artists Futura and Stash. It was made for a 2007 art show called Look Ma! No Brakes!
Javier Campos, principal designer of Campos Studio. DAE and Campos Studio collaborated to transform the campsite-like building into a modern, buzzy and welcoming space—and that called for coffee.
The structure became home to Isetta, a new café bistro from Thomas Eleizegui (who was behind the now-closed bike café Musette in Vancouver’s West End). DAE and Campos Studio kept the timber ceiling, aiming to preserve as much of that honest, old-school construction as possible. But at eye-level, traditional meets modern: midcentury-style patinated leather seating and blown glass pendant lights mix with bright, fresh details like the curvilinear orange wall sconces by Rich Brilliant Willing and a beautiful turquoise-tiled bar.
“We spent a lot of time making sure that what was attached to the shell stayed faithful to the original,” says Campos. And, as such, that community hub vibe lives on: on any given weekday morning, Isetta is bustling with suburban commuters grabbing coffee, Lycra-suited cyclists on their way back from climbing up to Cypress Mountain and retirees catching up over sandwiches.
GUITAR STAND HERO
Caleb Blake’s solid-wood furniture is instrumental in a musical (and stylish) home.
By Alyssa Hirose / Portrait by Paul White
THE LAST STAND Blake’s goal is to expand his collection of guitar stands and hooks to include furniture solutions for every instrument (think cellos, ukuleles and everything in between).
Careful craftsmanship goes into every guitar: from the technical aspect of tuning to the instrument’s overall aesthetic, they are mindfully designed objects. Guitar stands? Not so much. “What’s available on the market right now is mostly focused on functionality and price point,” says Caleb Blake, noting that mass-produced metal stands aren’t exactly made to be on display. The Campbell River-based furniture maker began his career in carpentry, framing houses for the better part of a decade before founding Natural Collection in 2019.
Blake himself plays the guitar (he grew up as one of eight children in a musical family—that’s one more kid than the von Trapps, if you’re counting) and started making instrument stands as a side hustle back in Calgary in 2014. “I missed the wood shop when I was out in the workforce, and I wanted to get more into doing finer woodwork,” he says. His evening and weekend gig became a full-time job in 2020, and a year later his Performer stool earned a 2021 Made in Alberta award in the Furnishings and Home Decor category.
The designer and musician considers guitars to be beautiful all on their own, and his projects aim to complement that. “My main focus is design and functionality; the way I look at it, I’m building fine furniture for your musical instruments,” Blake says. He crafts his guitar stands, wall hangers and music stools using hard, sturdy woods (think maple, walnut and ash), finishing the products with stainless steel pegs and soft Portuguese cork fabric. In the process, he’s transforming a strictly utilitarian eyesore into a real work of art—now that’s something to sing about.

2023 FURNITURE TRENDS
COME TOGETHER
By Barb Sligl Photographs by Clinton Hussey / Styling by Nicole Sjöstedt
More design shows triumphantly returned to in-person this year. And with that return, a series of design trends for 2023 that embrace our collective homecoming: in celebration of being together again.
That meeting again IRL (in real life!) was vaunted with plenty of exuberance at the 60th anniversary of Salone del Mobile in Milan. Reconnection reigned on the show floor, literally and figuratively (manifesting in uber-tactile materials like comforting bouclé and playful fringe) with a welcoming wink at tradition (a new generation’s take on archetypal looks, from rattan to lacquer). There were nods to terra firma and organic Brutalism, but levity, too: from tubular chairs to undulating lights. Meanwhile, over at September’s Maison et Object in Paris, the feel-good vibe of “Lux Populis” offered a fresh vision of new luxury that reflects popular culture, creating a thoughtful, inclusive space in which all can rejoice—together.
LATEST AND GREATEST
For 2023, design trends range from “organic brutalism” to “soft launch”: find out where each of these gorgeous new furniture designs fits, starting on page 26.

Flow State
Stemming from the natural world, design in 2023 embraces the curves and sinuous softness of materials like wood—as in the iconic Noguchi table—or fibreglass, such as the perfect sphere of the Bong coffee table from Capellini. Sculptural forms are also expressed in the porcelain of a pendant light named after the ancient Greek word for together: Hyphen. Or in the now-classic tubular Bibendum lounge chair—by a pioneer of modern design, Eileen Gray—which is both edgy and harmonious with its enveloping curves.

Organic Brutalism
Seemingly at odds with softer side of design, Brutalism is an architectural style for its use of utilitarian and steel, yet its emphasis materials, textures and struction is also highly sive. And inside the home, blocky, monolithic-like become art forms. The hewn wood of Brent Comber’s Béton Brut collection—crafted from Douglas fir and scorched with black hardwax oil—plays into the perceived permanence of béton (French for concrete) while commenting on the sience of nature. In another expression, Lee Broom’s lights are inspired by monumental Brutalist design, yet evoke stillness, reverence and contemplation.

Grandmillennial
It’s a “more is more” look that leans into maximalism and manifests in a kind of design oxymoron: modern retro or new nostalgia. But unlike granny’s living space, this “newstalgia” is modern and glam, bringing a fresh sensibility to floral and damask prints and soft furnishings. Perhaps there’s no better example than the Mah Jong modular sofa, which, after half a century, has been reissued by Roche Bobois in decadent fabrics by Jean Paul Gaultier, Missoni and Kenzō Takada. Whether in rattan, velvet or bright lacquer, this trend has that bit of boho bae that takes old-school grandeur to the next level.

OUTTA SITE
The homeowner had spent years on the property before the McKinley project began, and had very specific wishes for how to let the site drive the architecture. “He literally knew what tree could come down, how light would hit at what time of day,” says McKinley.
started with a cereal box.
Well, really, it started with a tiny cabin on a piece of land in Whistler. Followed by a phone call from the homeowner to Walker McKinley, principal of McKinley Studios, asking for help with a tear-down and rebuild of a new ski-inski-out vacation home. And then came the cereal box. Once the homeowner hung up, he grabbed it to use as scrap cardboard and got crafty making a model of his dream house to share with McKinley.
“I’ve got to give him credit, it was all there,” laughs McKinley. “Yes, it got refined and architect-ed, but in the end, all the key details were right there in the cereal box model.”
Those details include an inviting, ski-in entryway, and a striking, cantilevered glass room that hovers above the West Coast landscape. Says McKinley: “When you’re there, you’re floating.”

SMALL BUT MIGHTY
At just under 2,000 square feet, the home is small by Whistler standards—but it still packs a punch. “I was just talking to the client a few days ago,” says McKinley, “and he said the house is like Manny Pacquiao [the Filipino boxer and politician]: pound for pound the nicest house out there.”

“There’s really no shine to anything except the glass and lamp,” says McKinley. Everything else features a matte finish and natural materials—though excellent craftsmanship makes even the simplest of design details feel luxurious.
