Final exams are looming and with them come hours hunched over books, laptops, notes. Highlighting away and scribbling flash cards to study camped in a library cubicle with a florescent light glaring overhead. During final exam season, a lot of students only get outside when emerging from the library after studying all night and squinting in the early morning sunlight. Or when running to class while throwing back some caffeine chemistry combination of coffee and espresso. Taking a break from your books and going outside could actually be beneficial. Being in the presence of sunlight, fresh air, and trees is good for your health. Various studies have shown that going outside, especially in nature, can improve everything from eliminating mental fatigue to improving short term memory to decreasing stress. So, when final exams start to leave your brain mushy, close your laptop, go outside, and visit Queen’s Park. Scientists’ orders.

Dear WiseONE Dear WiseONE, I’m an international student here for an exchange program. I was only here for the year and I’m looking to sublet the room for the summer. The problem is I have so much stuff. Honestly, I don’t even know how it all got here! Why did I need 4 small whiteboards? It will never all fit into my suitcases, but I don’t want to throw it all away. Most of my stuff is practically new; it would be a shame for it to go to waste. Sincerely, Packing Problems

Dear WiseONE, I think my roommate is smoking in our bathroom. It often smells strongly of smoke and I can see yellow stains on the vent. My roommate is really nice to me. They’ve even gone out of their way to help me edit a paper and study for exams. I don’t want to be a “tattletale;” but, I want to live in a smoke-free room. The smell is very disruptive, especially when I am trying to study. What can I do? Sincerely, S.O.S. Smoke Signals

Dear Packing Problems, Dear S.O.S, Every student has been in your shoes. April arrives, the suitcases come out, and the realization that you are one free spirit t-shirt away from being on a Hoarders episode. Never fear! There are a lot of avenues you can take to off-load some of your excess items. Invite your friends to an indoor garage sale. Visit a consignment shop. Keep an eye out for the next CampusOne Swap Meet. Donate your items to a local shelter or thrift store. The more you can give to a new home, the less you will have to throw out. To help avoid clutter in the future, take your time weighing the necessity of your purchases/consumption. Moreover, you don’t have to wait until packing time to purge your belongings. Regular assessment of your belongings will help you stay on top of the

Step 1: When you smell smoke, call the Don on Duty (647-389-7068)! I know no one wants to be a “tattletale;” but, you’re probably not the only one affected by the smoke smell. When you call, let the Don on Duty know that you would like to remain anonymous. Step 2: Talk to your roommate! Let them know that their behavior is affecting you and your school work. Ask them to smoke outside. All you are asking them to do is follow CampusOne Community Standards. Any questions for the wise one? Click Here
