GM UPDATE Hey folks! Matt here. Welcome to another edition of The Centennial Express. If this is your first time reading, thanks for checking it out, and welcome! If you’re back for another edition, thanks for sticking with us and we hope you enjoy this month’s publication. Your engagement is just one of the many reasons why our community is so great, and why Centennial Place is where students love living. This February, we open our applications to General Market students—your space is no longer secure! If you’re thinking about renewing, but couldn’t commit during the January VIP Renewal Period, now is the time to secure your preferred Suite Style— while they’re still available! Space fills fast, and we want to ensure our loyal residents have first-pick at their top choice of Units for future terms. Now is also the time to express interest in joining the Residence Life Staff next year as a Residence Assistant (RA). While COVID-19 has harmed our staffing to some degree, we remain hopeful that interested students may still have the possibility of joining our team next Fall— consider participating in Friday Night Lights to learn more about if the role is right for you! Finally, whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this month with a significant other—or solo!—please remember to ‘stay at home’ and don’t put yourself in harm’s way by risking travel or in-person gatherings or interactions with others. We’re not quite out of the woods yet, but we hope you’ll still find ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones, family, and friends.
Matt's Monthly Quote
This month’s Quote is from a dear friend of mine—and a public figure in Scarborough! A renowned Spoken Word artist, and exceptional leader in the black community (and beyond!), Dwayne gave me this great advice nearly 15 years ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since. I hope it inspires you, the way it did me!
“Show your face to the world, and the world will reflect your image.” - Dwayne Morgan

In addition to Canada, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology.

Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year!
