The current COVID-19 situation can have an impact on your mental health. Practicing physical distancing makes it even more important that we make an extra effort to remain emotionally connected. Finding ways to stay connected with friends, family, and loved ones will support good mental health and well-being. Consider finding new ways to practice self-care and stay connected, such as reading with a virtual book club, having a video call over dinner, texting with friends, or streaming a group fitness class. These are just some of the things that could support good mental well-being. Maintaining good mental and physical health will help ensure Canadians get through this together. Bell started the campaign in September 2010. Since then, millions of Canadians, including leading personalities, have engaged in an open discussion about mental illness. For every text, call, tweet, social media post, or video view by its customers, Bell donates five cents to mental health programs. To date, $93 million has been raised; the goal is to surpass $100 million. The company says that by raising awareness and sharing ideas, institutions and organizations receive new funding for access, care, and research. The campaign has four aims: anti-stigma by driving a conversation to promote understanding, care and access, research, and improving workplace health.

FEBRUARY 4

World Cancer Day What is it? World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease. UICC continues to expand on the success and impact of the day and is committed to ensuring that year-onyear the event is seen and heard by more people around the world. We do this through working directly with our members to develop a campaign that serves their differing organizational priorities; this is achieved through a two-pronged strategic approach: • UICC provides support through the development of tools and guidance to encourage its member organizations to run local cancer awareness campaigns that are aligned and adapted to the global World Cancer Day message. • On an above-country level, we work to secure and support digital, traditional, and social media opportunities to raise public awareness of the day. Through the continued support of our membership and key partners, World Cancer Day is beginning to firmly cement itself in calendars across the world. Why? More than one-third of cancer cases can be prevented. Another third can be cured if detected early and treated properly. By implementing resource-appropriate strategies on prevention, early detection, and treatment, we can save up to 3.7 million lives every year. Theme The 2019-2021 campaign theme is 'I Am and I Will'. The theme seeks to counter the negative attitude and fatalistic belief that nothing can be done about cancer, and instead promotes how our personal actions can be powerful and impactful. Impact World Cancer Day is marked by the international cancer community, governments, and individuals around the world. Each year, more than 900 activities take place in over 100 different countries, with the day itself a trending topic on Twitter. In recent years, cities have begun to support the day by lighting up important landmarks in orange and blue. In 2019, 55 landmarks in 37 cities participated in the landmark lighting initiative. At least 60 governments officially observe World Cancer Day.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

About During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today. Black History in Canada People of African descent have been a part of shaping Canada’s heritage and identity since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, a navigator and interpreter, whose presence in Canada dates back to the early 1600s. The role of people of African descent in Canada has not always been viewed as a key feature in Canada’s historic landscape. There is little mention that some of the Loyalists who came here after the American Revolution and settled in the Maritimes were people of African descent, or of the many sacrifices made in wartime by soldiers of African descent as far back as the War of 1812. Few Canadians are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse and inclusive society. Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth, and development of Canada, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country. In the 1950s, community organizations such as the Canadian Negro Women’s Association began to celebrate the importance of the history of the black community in Toronto. In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month through the efforts of many individuals and organizations such as the Ontario Black History Society. In 1995, Toronto Area MP Jean Augustine introduced a motion that was passed unanimously by the House of Commons to recognize Black History Month across Canada. Black History Month is an opportunity for the City of Toronto to recognize the past and present contributions that African Canadians make to the life of Toronto in such areas as education, medicine, art, culture, public service, economic development, politics, and human rights.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Recognizing Black History Month The commemoration of Black History Month dates back to 1926 when Harvard-educated African American historian Carter G. Woodson proposed setting aside a time devoted to honour the accomplishments of African Americans and to heighten awareness of Black history in the United States. This led to the establishment of Negro History Week in 1926. Celebrations of Black history began in Canada also shortly thereafter. During the early 1970s, the week became known as Black History Week. It was expanded into Black History Month in 1976. In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. The motion was carried unanimously by the House of Commons. In February 2008, Senator Donald Oliver, the first Black man appointed to the Senate, introduced the Motion to Recognize Contributions of Black Canadians and February as Black History Month. It received unanimous approval and was adopted on March 4, 2008. The adoption of this motion completed Canada’s parliamentary position on Black History Month.
