GROUP PROJECTS: TIPS TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE THEM SUCCESSFULLY

By Adeola Atofarati

As an introvert and someone who loves to work alone, the most stressful part of my semester and course schedule are the group projects. Nothing increases my anxiety more than working with people who are not on the same wavelength as me. But as Centennial College students, we really can’t escape group projects. It seems to me that even more weight is given to group work every year. Therefore, it is really important to learn how to manage our groups and be an effective group member. Here are some tips that have helped me:

Tip 1: Choose your team members wisely. Most professors will let you choose your group members. Choose people you know (friends) or people who you have observed in class who seem to be smarter than you (or at the minimum are as smart as you). Tip 2: Elect a team leader early. If there is no leader, nobody takes responsibility for anything.

preferrably 24 hours before the official deadline to accommodate last minute editing and technical glitches during submission.

Tip 4: Set the tone and basic rules at the first meeting. If your team is going to be successful, there must be some “codes of conduct” in place. Don’t assume people will naturally be as serious-minded as you. Let everyone know that participation, attendance, quality of work etc. are important. Tip 5: Assign roles and define everybody’s task. Tip 6: Create a shared document (either a Google document or use Centennial’s SharePoint) so all your team members can see everybody’s contribution real time. Tip 7: Don’t be nasty or obnoxious. Learn from everyone. Be open to new ideas. The goal is to get the work done. Enjoy the company of your team members and have fun while you work on your projects, you may be laying the blocks for a forever friendship.

Tip 3: Take a look at the assignment early, understand the requirements and your professor’s expectations. Take note of the Have a refreshing Reading Week, everyone! deadline. Agree on an internal deadline,
