At Jersey Canada, our mission is to help our members, and the Jersey breed, thrive. Our association is built on our herdbook which is comprised of more than a century of registrations and transfers of Canadian Jersey cattle, tracing lineages, bovine and human, as the Jersey breed has made its indelible mark on the Canadian dairy landscape.
The turn of the 20th century saw breeding stock being imported into Canada like never before. The Pedigree Act was created in 1900 to not only bring order to a burgeoning agricultural sector, but to harness the benefits of purposeful breeding to attain predictable and profitable outcomes. As breed societies set-up shop, research by “the father of modern genetics,” Gregor Mendel, was rediscovered, and the rest is history.
Breed association records continue to underpin fundamental services offered by industry partners. When a breeder takes that first step to send in a calf registration, they are contributing to a pool of data that benefits their pocketbooks, their neighbors milking cows down the road, and the consumer purchasing safe, affordable dairy products. It is up to that breeder to decide how they will manage their herd, and they will make those decisions knowing they have accurate in-

formation about their herd’s lineage and that they are protected when buying and selling cattle and genetics.
They also know that the breed association of their choice is actively looking out for their best interests. As stewards of the Jersey breed in Canada, our association collaborates with our peers and partners to identify and improve the breed-specific advantages Jerseys offer producers.
To this end, this year the Jersey Canada Genetic Improvement Committee is working on defining a breed improvement plan to inform the next Jersey Canada Strategic Plan to be launched in 2025. Jersey producers across the country will be asked for input in the coming months, and I encourage anyone that is interested in sharing their thoughts to contribute.

I am honoured and privileged to be the newly elected Jersey Canada Chairman of the Board. I will continue to work with your dedicated board and valued Jersey Canada staff to support a dynamic and profitable future for the Jersey industry - one that is sustainable for generations to come.
It has been a rewarding experience serving on the board for the past nine years and I am thrilled to see where the vigorous interest and growth of the Jersey cow takes us.
Jersey enthusiasm is on the increase as exhibited by increasing registrations, transfers, and memberships over the past decade. Jerseys are poised well for the future with high milk components that the dairy industry across Canada desires. This along with high feed efficiency, high fertility traits and a low carbon footprint, to name a few of the Jersey cow's attributes, make Jersey cattle attractive to the dairy industry and the new excitement around the world with sustainability.
I know it takes a team effort to nourish and grow the Jersey breed in Canada. I’m looking forward to working together with your Jersey Canada team, staff, directors, and breed enthusiasts who are committed to advancing our industry, addressing

Jersey Canada Youth Scholarship
The Jersey Canada Youth Scholarship deadline is Friday, September 6th! Jersey Canada offers three scholarships of $1,000 each to recognize outstanding interest, knowledge and achievement in the Jersey breed, as well as agriculture in general. The scholarships are available to all young Canadian Jersey enthusiasts enrolled in at least the second year of study at any post-secondary College or University, and will be presented at this year’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Jersey Canada Director Elections Élections des administrateurs de Jersey Canada
Reminder, the nomination deadline for Jersey Canada Board of Directors positions is Saturday, September 30th, 2024. The following areas are due for election, and the incumbents in these regions are:
District: Ontario 1 Jon Kingdon
District: Québec 1 Melissa Bowers
District: Atlantic 1 Deanna Doctor
District: Ontario 3 George Van Kampen
Elections will be held for districts Ontario 1, Québec 1 and Atlantic 1 for three-year terms to begin at the Annual General Meeting to be held in 2025.
An election will also be held for the district Ontario 3, to fill the remaining two year for the seat currently held by 2024 President, George Van Kampen. This two-year term will begin at the 2025 Annual General Meeting.
To be eligible to become and remain a Director, the nominee must be a member in good standing of Jersey Canada, residing in the district for which he/she is to be elected, and be the registered owner of at least ten living females, registered in the Canadian Jersey Cattle Register.
Nomination for the office of Director must be made in writing, to be received at the office of the Association by September 30th, 2024. To be valid, a nomination must be signed by five members in good standing, not including the nominee, all residing in the electoral district, and the nominee must, by his/her signature, show willingness to act in the best interest of the corporation. Nomination forms can be obtained on the Jersey Canada website or by contacting the office. If, by October 1st, 2024, there is only one valid nomination in the electoral district, the nominee shall be declared elected.

Royal Class Additions 2024 National Jersey Show
The Jersey Canada Show Committee is excited to announce two classes are being introduced for the 2024 National Jersey Show at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, historically at the beginning of November. These classes are:
SUMMER CALF – BORN ON OR AFTER JUNE 1, 2024
A minimum of 10 entries will be required and the Junior Calf class eligibility will change to a calf born March 1, 2024 – May 31, 2024.
CHAMPION BEST BRED AND OWNED MILKING CLASS
All best bred and owned milking class cows will re-enter the ring before the Championship class to determine the winner of a perpetual award in memory of Michael Heath, a 10-year monetary prize of $250 and keeper award sponsored by the Michael Heath Memorial Fund.
Welcome Al Cunnington to the team as an Extension Representative! In a partnership with Jersey Ontario, Al will help provide farm-level support to Jersey Canada members and Jersey breeders in West Central Ontario.

Brecken is a Solstice son out of an E-90% Bionic followed by Ahlem Chekelo Blush 47526 (E-95%), then a E-92% Valentino and many more generations of VG dams behind that. So, a truly deep pedigree and maternal lineage with outstanding production records and longevity.
When looking at Brecken’s conformation he is +7 and +8 for mammary. Expect shallow udders with strong median suspensory ligaments, strong fore udder attachments, and high and wide rear udder attachments. Daughters will be very angular and flat boned yet carry width throughout.
Functionality traits are key to any dairy herd and Brecken is a MastitisResistantPRO designated sire. What factors are considered when debating a retrofit versus building a new barn?
P: Many factors come in to play when looking at a barn construction. Farming might be a way of life, but in the end, it must be profitable to be sustainable. Building revenue potential versus amount to invest is normally the governing factor of most barn constructions whether it be a new build or a retrofit. How many cows can I comfortably house in my renovated facility? Herd size will essentially determine potential milk production thus potential milk revenue. We have done retrofits, where an existing swine barn is converted to a milking barn. In that situation we would look at how many cows we can house in the building and see if this will allow us to fill current quota and also allow for future growth. Then we would look at what modifications would need to be done to the building to make a suitable environment for the milking cows. When retrofitting, a key concern is cow wellness and comfort, space, airflow and lighting are the biggest concerns. We look at what needs to be added to the building to ensure those are adequate. We would thendetermine if the modifications are possible from a structural standpoint. If so, we would evaluate the cost associated with the modifications to determine an overall project budget. This can be analysed considering the potential milk revenue to determine whether the anticipated project is feasible.

of the puzzle in the overall farmstead planning. It goes without saying that well maintained buildings are usually easier to retrofit. It is often more expensive to renovate old buildings in poor condition than to build new. Big ticket items such as milkhouses, feed rooms and manure pump rooms add significant cost to construction projects. It is important to evaluate how they can be kept or reused when possible. The same is true for laneway, electrical and water service entrances.
Farm managers always talk of workload when discussing renovations. It is very important that the renovation/ retrofitting results in a less straining workload. Often, existing buildings have limited access or space constraints that may result in improper use of certain spaces. This is sometimes accompanied with an increase labour for certain tasks such as manual manure scraping, bedding and feed distribution. Robotics and automation can help with resolving some of these issues but can add significant cost. With proper planning. the need for additional equipment can be offset with the savings realized by reusing existing spaces.
Are there legalities involved when retrofitting (permits etc.)
P: Retrofits often require some sort of addition to the existing facility. Thus, most retrofits will require building permits, but not always. Additionally, most jurisdictions have minimum setbacks to respect from lot lines, roads and neighbour dwellings. Some provinces also
require ministerial approvals. Dairy Farmers of Canada also requires all farms to adhere to the proAction standards, which will influence certain aspects of the design.
What is the square foot price range for a retrofit?
P: Cost of retrofits will vary greatly. The cost comparison between retrofitting and new build is always unique to each project, so it is hard to quantify numbers. Price per square foot is a poor evaluation method, because added square footage will dilute fixed project cost and give the impression of a less expensive project (on a square foot basis) even though the total price tag would be higher. Take for example different feeding systems. Wide lanes for tractor access would add square footage and would further divide equipment cost. It is fair to say that equipment purchasing cost is normally the same for both cases, but equipment install/ labour is normally a little more for retrofits versus new builds as it usually requires more fitting work and time. Same goes for new floor ing and curbs. When renovating an existing building, access is often restricted to smaller equipment which can mean more time and labour for grading, forming and pouring concrete. As a rule of thumb, similar work takes more time in a retrofit than in a new build. The main gain of retrofits is the reuse of existing foundations and framework and the savings associated with not having to build a new foundation or new roof.

Quels facteurs sont considérés lorsqu’on étudie un réaménagement intérieur comparativement à la construction d’une nouvelle étable?
P: Plusieurs facteurs entrent en ligne de compte lorsqu’on étudie la construction d’une étable. L’agriculture est bien sûr un mode de vie, mais en bout de ligne, ce doit être profitable et viable. Le potentiel de revenus de la construction comparativement au montant à investir est normalement le facteur principal de la plupart des constructions d’étable, que ce soit une nouvelle construction ou une rénovation. Combien de vaches pourrais-je confortablement loger dans mon étable rénovée? La taille du troupeau déterminera essentiellement la production de lait potentielle, donc le revenu potentiel provenant du lait. Nous avons fait des rénovations où une porcherie existante fut transformée en une étable laitière. Dans cette situation, nous avons évalué combien de vaches pourront loger dans l’édifice et qui : un – nous permettra de remplir le quota existant et deux – nous permettra une croissance future. Puis nous regardons quelles modifications seront nécessaires au bâtiment pour créer un environnement adapté aux vaches laitières. Lors d’un réaménagement, les éléments clé à considérer sont le bien-être et le confort des vaches en premier puis l’espace, la circulation d’air et l’éclairage. Nous regardons ce qui doit être ajouté à l’édifice pour rencontrer tous ces critères d’un point de vue structurel. Ensuite, nous évaluerons le coût associé aux modifications pour déterminer le budget pour tout le projet. Ceci peut être analysé considérant le revenu potentiel de lait pour déterminer si le projet anticipé est faisable.
Au cours de la planification initiale, il est toujours bon de visiter les installations existantes pour voir comment elles
peuvent être réutilisées comme pièces du casse-tête dans la planification globale de la ferme. Il va sans dire que des bâtiments bien entretenus et maintenus sont plus faciles à rénover. Il est souvent plus dispendieux de rénover de vieilles bâtisses en mauvaise condition que d’en bâtir des neuves. Les gros items comme la laiterie, les salles d’alimentation et les stations de pompage du fumier peuvent ajouter des coûts significatifs aux projets de construction. Il est important d’évaluer comment ils pourront être conservés ou réutilisés lorsque c’est possible. Même chose pour les entrées de cour, les entrées électriques et d’eau.
Les gérants de ferme parlent toujours de la charge de travail lorsqu’on discute de rénovations. Il est très important que les rénovations/réaménagements réduisent la charge de travail ou le facilite. Souvent, les édifices existants ont un accès limité ou une contrainte d’espace qui peut résulter en une utilisation inadéquate de certains espaces. Ceci est parfois accompagné d’une surcharge de travail pour certaines tâches comme le grattage du fumier, l’application de litière et la distribution des aliments. La robotique et l’automatisation peut aider à résoudre certains de ces problèmes mais peut aussi ajouter un coût significatif. Avec une planification appropriée, le besoin d’équipement additionnel peut être justifié par la réutilisation d’espaces existants.
Y a-t-il des règlements à respecter lorsqu’on planifie un réaménagement intérieur (permis, etc.)
P: Souvent, les reconfigurations intérieures demandent un ajout quelconque au bâtiment existant. Donc, la plupart des rénovations demanderont des permis de construction, mais pas toujours. Aussi, plusieurs juridictions ont des distances minimales à respecter entre l’avant de la
ligne de lot, les routes et les bâtiments des voisins. Certaines provinces demandent aussi des approbations ministérielles. Les Producteurs laitiers du Canada exigent aussi que toutes les fermes adhèrent aux normes d’excellence ProAction qui influencera certains aspects du design.
Quel est la fourchette de prix au pied carré pour un réaménagement intérieur?
P: Le coût des rénovations varie grandement. La comparaison du prix entre la rénovation et un nouvel édifice est toujours unique à chaque projet. Il est donc difficile d’avancer des montants. Le prix par pieds carré n’est pas une bonne méthode d’évaluation car les pieds carrés ajoutés dilueront le coût fixe du projet et donnera l’impression d’un projet moins dispendieux (sur une base de pieds carrés) même si le prix total sera plus élevé. Prenons par exemple un différent système d’alimentation. Des allées larges pour permettre l’accès au tracteur ajoutera des pieds carrés et divisera le prix de l’équipement. Il est juste de dire que le coût d’achat de l’équipement est normalement le même dans les deux cas mais l’installation de l’équipement/travail est habituellement un peu plus pour une rénovation versus une nouvelle construction car ça demande plus de temps pour l’adaptation. Même chose pour les planchers et les bordures. Lorsqu’on rénove un édifice existant, l’endroit n’est souvent accessible qu’à de la plus petite machinerie ce qui peut signifier plus de temps et de travail pour le nivellement, l’installation des formes et pour couler le ciment. Généralement, un travail similaire prend plus de temps dans une rénovation que dans une nouvelle construction. Le gain principal des réaménagements est l’utilisation de fondations et murs existants et l’économie associée au fait de ne pas avoir à refaire de fondations ou un nouveau toit.

The 2024 Jersey Canada Annual General Meeting once again took place in la belle province of Quebec, this time at the Manoir des Sables in Orford, approximately an hour and a half east of Montreal in the Eastern Townships.
On the morning of Friday, March 21st, attendees had the opportunity to visit three well-known dairy operations in the area. The first stop of the day was Lencrest de la Vallée, the home of Lencrest Jerseys. This portion of the farm was purchased by Melissa Bowers and Philip Aitkens in 2016 as an expansion of the farm established by Melissa’s parents, Gary and Maureen Bowers, approximately 20 minutes away. They had two facilities; the first one was converted from a tiestall to free-stall with one robot milker, and housed most of their two-year-old cows and fresh heifers. The second barn was originally loose-housing for dry cows and heifers, but has since been converted to house the remaining milking cows with two robots added.
The tour group then moved up the mountain to the appropriately named Lookout Farm, with an incredible view of Lake Massawippi below. Lookout is owned and operated by Callum McKinven and his family. After entering through a hallway full of impressive accolades, banners and ribbons, attendees set their eyes on a notable show herd of a variety of dairy breeds in a tie-stall barn. Lookout is not a large operation,

and it was easy to see the dedication and time put into each animal’s care and well-being. The cows seemed comfortable even with the large amount of people in the barn.
Everyone made a pit stop at Cabane à sucre Erabilis for an authentic sugar shack lunch, which included Quebec’s classic maple syrup snow candy on a stick for dessert. After lunch, the group made their way to the final farm visit, Ferma Roggua, a large tie-stall mixedbreed operation owned by Rachelle Guay and Raymond, Kevin and Bryan Favreau. Roggua was also hosting a tag sale and attendees had the opportunity to view the animals for sale and place their bids.
Though each farm was different in size and milking systems, they all had the same cleanliness and welcoming feel. It was clear that these producers care very much about their animals and operations. Friday closed out with the All-Canadian presentations and a meal back at the hotel.
Saturday morning started with the Next Generation program where the Jersey Young Achievers, Travel Bursary and Youth of Distinction awards were presented. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear Pierre Dionne from Shur-Gain speak about farm management and planning. One takeaway from Pierre’s presentation was how even though animal welfare is incredibly important, the farmers welfare is also something that needs to be considered.
One needs to plan their farm management around their current needs and wants as well as their ability to manage that operation long-term.
The Annual General Meeting began mid-morning with a call to order. The 2023 committee reports were addressed as well as the financial reports. A recess was taken for the President’s luncheon, there production awards were handed out, and the meeting then continued with the presentation and discussion of four resolutions brought forward by members. (see page 21)
Saturday ended with the Jersey Canada Awards Banquet. The group enjoyed a great meal while the awards for Honorary Life Members, Certificate of Appreciation, Constructive Breeders, President’s Cups and Master Breeder were presented. The night closed out on the dancefloor led by a live band, Slightly Haggard, covering various genres of music.
In closing, the weekend was a success. Members and industry partners alike were able to come together and discuss management styles, herd improvement, the association as a whole and of course everyone’s favourite little brown cow. There was no shortage of laughter and friendly conversations. Jersey Canada’s 2024/25 President, George Van Kampen, is looking forward to welcoming everyone to the “prettiest” town in Ontario, Orangeville, for the 2025 Jersey Canada AGM taking place at the nearby Hockley Valley Resort on March 29th, 2025.

L’assemblée générale annuelle 2024 de Jersey Canada s’est tenue encore une fois dans la belle province de Québec, cette fois au Manoir des Sables à Orford, à environ 1 heure et demie à l’est de Montréal dans les cantons de l’est.
Le matin du vendredi 21 mars, les participants ont eu la chance de visiter trois entreprises laitières bien connues de la région. Le premier arrêt de la journée fut à Lencrest de la Vallée, site de Lencrest Jerseys. Cette portion de la ferme fut achetée par Melissa Bowers et Philip Aitkens en 2016 comme une expansion de la ferme établie par les parents de Melissa, Gary et Maureen Bowers, à environ 20 minutes de route. Ils ont deux installations : la première est une étable entravée convertie en stabulation libre avec un robot trayeur qui loge la plupart de leurs vaches de deux ans et les taures fraîches.
La deuxième étable était à l’origine une étable libre pour les vaches taries et les génisses mais a été convertie depuis pour loger le reste des vaches laitières et deux robots trayeurs ont été ajoutés.
Le groupe s’est ensuite déplacé en haut de la montagne pour visiter la ferme Lookout qui a une vue imprenable du lac Massawippi plus bas. Lookout est gérée et appartenue par Callum McKinven et sa famille. Après avoir traversé le passage d’entrée où sont exposés les récompenses, bannières et rubans, les participants ont pu admirer ce troupeau d’exposition exceptionnel composé d’une variété de races de vaches laitières dans
une étable entravée. Lookout n’est pas une grosse entreprise mais il est facile de voir le dévouement et le temps passé à prendre soin du bien-être de chaque animal. Les vaches semblaient confortables, même avec tous ces gens dans l’étable.
Tous se sont ensuite arrêtés à la Cabane à sucre Erabilis pour un repas authentique de cabane qui comprenait de la tire sur la neige pour dessert. Après le lunch, le groupe s’est dirigé vers la dernière visite de ferme de la journée à la Ferma Roggua, une grande étable entravée de plusieurs races, appartenue par Rachelle Guay et Raymond, Kevin et Bryan Favreau. Roggua a aussi tenu une vente et les participants ont eu la chance de voir les animaux à vendre et de placer leurs mises.
Même si chaque ferme était différente en taille et en système de traite, elles avaient toutes la même propreté et le même accueil. Il est clair que ces producteurs s’occupent bien de leurs animaux et de leur entreprise. La journée s’est terminée avec les présentations Tout Canadien et un repas à l’hôtel.
Le samedi matin a débuté avec le programme Prochaine génération où on a remis les prix Jeunes méritants, Jeunes de distinction et les bourses voyages. Les participants ont eu l’occasion d’entendre Pierre Dionne de Shur-Gain parler de gestion de ferme et de planification. Une partie importante de la présentation de Pierre soulignait que même si le bien-être animal est extrêmement important, le bien-être du producteur est aussi
important à considérer. On doit planifier la gestion de la ferme autour de nos besoins et désirs courants et de la capacité de gérer la ferme à long terme.
L’assemblée générale annuelle a débuté au milieu de la matinée avec l’appel à l’ordre. Les rapports 2023 des comités furent présentés ainsi que les rapports financiers. Une pause a été faite pour le lunch du Président où on a remis les prix de production. La réunion a repris ensuite avec la présentation et la discussion de quatre résolutions amenées par les membres. (voir ci-page 21)
Le samedi s’est terminé avec le banquet Jersey Canada de remises de prix. Le groupe a dégusté un excellent repas pendant que l’on remettait les prix de Membres Honoraires à Vie, Certificat d’appréciation, Éleveurs Émérites, Coupes du Président et le prix de Maître Éleveur. La soirée s’est terminée sur le plancher de danse, animé par un groupe musical, Slightly Haggard, qui a joué plusieurs styles musicaux.
En terminant, la fin de semaine fut réussie. Les membres et les partenaires de l’industrie se sont rassemblés et ont discuté de styles de gestion, d’amélioration de troupeau, de l’association et, évidemment, de cette petite vache brune préférée de tous. Il n’a pas manqué de rires et de discussions amicales. Le Président 2024/25 de Jersey Canada, George Van Kampen, a hâte d’accueillir tout le monde dans la ‘plus belle’ ville de l’Ontario pour l’AGA 2025 qui se tiendra le 29 mars au Hockley Valley Resort.

Ranking of the best producing herds in Canada
• Whereas it is difficult to know the best herds of breeders across the country for production;
• Whereas several individual rankings already exist in the Jersey Breeder;
• Whereas the Jersey Breeder is an excellent tool for publishing and sharing the performance of Canada's Jersey herds;
• Whereas this would be an excellent tool to promote elite Jersey herds in the country;
It was moved by Éric Chassé and seconded by Max Kohler to ask Jersey Canada to publish once a year the best herds from the different regions of the country ranked by the amount of fat and total protein.
Guillaume Dumais moved to amend motion to include listing herds using the Lactanet herd management index, seconder Marcel Choinière.

It was a real honour to have been selected as the recipients of the Jersey Young Achievers and the Travel Bursary to attend the 2024 Jersey Canada AGM held in Orford, Quebec. This was the first time Chris and I attended the AGM and we were certainly impressed with the event.
The weekend started with farm tours to Lencrest, Lookout, and Ferme Roggua. Each farm offered something different to see. At Lencrest we saw how they converted an existing tie-stall barn into a free-stall robot barn. Lookout was a tie-stall barn that housed some of the most elite show cattle in multiple different breeds. We enjoyed a sweet maple treat and hot lunch at a local sugar shack before our last stop of the day at Ferme Roggua. Here, we were able to see an exceptional herd of cows and a great display of cattle being offered in their tag sale. The day concluded with the All Canadian presentations where we were able to accept our first two All Canadian awards!
We were able to take away many great lessons from the Next Generation Speaker Pierre Dionne from Shur-Gain. His presentation focused on the importance of

He also spoke about including the next generation in decisions and creating a plan for the future of the farm that considered proAction requirements, budget, goals for the herd, equipment, and labour needed. This was a very impactful presentation as we are currently working on taking over my family farm and building an addition on the barn.
The AGM provided us an opportunity to hear from the Jersey Canada board with committee reports, industry partners regarding their projects and accomplishments, as well as an opportunity for new business and resolutions to be discussed and voted on. We ended the evening with the awards banquet where the top awards were presented to the Jersey Canada members. Congratulations to all the awards recipients.

Ce fut un réel honneur d’avoir été sélectionnée comme récipiendaire du prix Jeune Méritant Jersey et de la bourse voyage pour assister à l’AGA 2024 de Jersey Canada tenue à Orford, Québec. C’était la première fois que Chris et moi assistions à l’AGA et nous avons certainement été impressionnés par l’événement. La fin de semaine a débuté avec des visites

Nous avons retenu plusieurs leçons du conférencier Prochaine génération, Pierre Dionne de Shur-Gain. Sa présentation se concentrait sur l’importance du confort des vaches, de bonnes pratiques

L’AGA nous a fourni une occasion d’entendre le conseil d’administration de Jersey Canada et les rapports des comités, les partenaires de l’industrie au sujet de leurs projets et de leurs accomplissements ainsi que d’entendre les nouvelles affaires et les résolutions qui ont été discutées et votées. Ferme Cavalait is a generational farm in Lefaivre, Ontario, a small community that hugs the Ontario/Quebec border. The farm was purchased by Jean-Claude Bercier in the 1960’s, and in 1989 his daughter, Claudine, and her husband, Alain Poirier, took over the operations. They started out with 35 grade Holstein cattle. Over time, they introduced Jerseys into the herd and today the farm proudly boasts a 100% registered Jersey herd. Claudine and Alain’s love for the Canadian dairy industry and the Jersey cow was passed down to their son Daniel, who now owns and operates the farm with his wife Carine.
FOUNDATION
Ferme Cavalait began building their Jersey herd by purchasing cows from some well-known breeders: Rexlea, Glenholme, Bridon, Rapid Bay and Hometown Jerseys. A couple of notable cows from these purchases are Bridon Ren Evelyn ET, with a lifetime production of 71,497 kg, 5.19% fat and 3.89% protein and Rapid Bay DCSunny Balerina ET with a lifetime production of 76,648 kg, 5.35% fat and 3.99% protein.
Another notable foundation cow is Franken Saturn Rose whose daughter, Cava Paramount Rosa, has an impressive production record of 10 lactations totaling 101,725 kg of milk with 5.19% fat and 3.85% protein. With these cow families Ferme Cavalait was able to achieve Jersey Canada Constructive Breeder status in 2011 and 2023 and have now received the 2024 Jersey Canada Master Breeder Award.
TRANSITIONING
Knowing that farm succession and transition can be difficult to navigate, the Poirier family took a proactive approach to their planning. They worked closely with Luc Gagné from Ontario Agricultural Management Group, as they wanted a neutral third party to provide unbiased advice and feedback during the process.
The planning began in 2016 by including Daniel as a third partner in the
farm ownership. Three years later, Daniel purchased full shares from Alain and Claudine and then in 2022, Daniel’s wife, Carine, was added as a partner. The most challenging part of the process for the Poirier family was the time required to meet with various professionals, such as accountants and lawyers. However, they found that having a neutral party and the ability to take their time made communicating their needs and wants to each other easier.
FARM MANAGEMENT
Alain and Daniel are the farm's full-time workers, caring for the herd, working the land, and maintaining all the equipment. Carine manages all the finances and pitches in for chores when needed. Cavalait also employs a student, Jacob Côté, part-time on weekends. There are 150 acres of cultivated land on which Daniel and Alain plant and harvest crops of corn, hay, and cereal mixtures.
Cavalait maintains a herd size of around 80 Jerseys and are milking 49 of them in a tie-stall facility with a DeLaval pipe-line system. Cows are fed a total
mixed ration (TMR) of dry hay, custom and protein supplements, as well as corn silage. Newborn heifers are given colostrum within two hours and moved to outdoor hutches at around one week of age. There, they are bedded with an abundance of straw and provided milk four times a day totaling eight liters.
The farm uses classification and genomic testing to ensure their herd meets their high standards. Cavalait’s ideal cow is functional, calving easily, and has great production and optimal feed efficiency. They use AI for breeding and make informed mating choices using tools like proof sheets, Semex Elevate mating sheets, and SCR Heat Time technology. This helps ensure each breeding contributes to their farm's ongoing success.
EXPANSION
Despite facing growth challenges due to its location, Ferme Cavalait is actively pursuing expansion plans because continuous improvement based on efficiency has always been a part of their business plan. This year, they're set to construct a new barn attached to the existing structure.

lactoduc DeLaval. Les vaches reçoivent une ration totale mélangée (RTM) de foin sec, de suppléments de protéine et d’ensilage de maïs. Les nouveau-nés reçoivent du colostrum dans les deux heures suivant la naissance et sont déplacées dans des huches extérieures à l’âge d’environ une semaine, où ils sont confortables sur un lit de paille abondante et reçoivent du lait quatre fois par jour, soit huit litres. La ferme utilise la classification et les tests génomiques pour s’assurer que le troupeau rencontre leurs hautes attentes. La vache idéale pour Cavalait est fonctionnelle, vêle aisément, a une grande production et une efficacité alimentaire optimale. EXPANSION
Malgré les défis de croissance à cause de son emplacement, la Ferme Cavalait poursuit activement des plans d’expansion car l’amélioration continue basée sur l’efficacité a toujours fait partie de leur plan d’affaires. Cette année, ils construiront une nouvelle étable attenante à la structure existante. Cette nouvelle étable sera en stabulation libre avec deux robots trayeurs GEA ce qui leur permettra d’augmenter leur troupeau en lactation à 75 vaches. En plus, ils rénoveront l’étable entravée existante pour loger les vaches taries et les taures.
La croissance n’est pas limitée à la ferme. Daniel et Carine, avec leur fils aîné, Arthur, ont accueilli leur deuxième fils, Charles, en décembre 2023. Avec une famille grandissante et une bonne compréhension des demandes de l’industrie, la famille Poirier est toujours dédiée au succès tout en honorant la fondation qui fut posée par les générations avant eux.

CONSTRUCTIVE BREEDER | ÉLEVEUR ÉMÉRITE
Wigmana Farms Ltd. was established in the 1960’s by Katherine and Peter Beintema. In 1982, Katherine, along with daughter Dorothy, purchased a 200-acre farm near Dundalk, Ontario. They worked side by side with Dorothy's husband, Stephen Frankland, until Katherine's passing in 1999. Today, Dorothy and Stephen continue the Wigmana operation along with their son Andrew.
THE HERD
Wigmana maintains a herd size of 90 to 100 head of cattle, 15 of which are Jersey, the remaining are all Holstein. They keep an equal number of youngstock as well. From the outset, calf health is a top priority at Wigmana Farms. Calves are raised in outdoor hutches, receiving a carefully balanced diet of whole milk, calf starter, and hay. Jersey calves are allocated up to six liters per day of milk, while their Holstein counterparts receive nine liters per day. They’ve found that proactive measures, such as vaccinating for pneumonia and cryptosporidium, are essential in avoiding diseases in their youngstock.
Wigmana works closely with Brian Llewellyn from Grand Valley Fortifiers for their herd’s nutritional needs. Young heifers are provided with freechoice hay, total mixed ration (TMR), and grower pellets. Older heifers either continue a TMR regimen or graze on rotational pasture. Dry cows receive a balanced TMR consisting of hay, straw, corn silage, and supplements or are let out to pasture to graze. Milking cows receive a similar ration, but hay is substituted for haylage, and dry corn is also included. While forages are cultivated on-site, the harvesting process is managed by custom operators. Additional grains and proteins are purchased to complement the farm's homegrown forage.
THE FARM & FACILITIES
Wigmana Farms rotates approximately 200 acres between three years of hay cultivation, predominantly alfalfa and grass, followed by two years dedicated to corn for silage. Additionally, the farm boasts 60 acres of permanent pasture for their dairy herd as well as a flock of 150 ewes and some beef cattle.
Milking cows are comfortably housed in a four-row head-to-head free-stall barn, constructed in 2003. Milk production is efficiently managed through a double-8 herringbone parlour, where cows are milked twice daily. Attached to the main barn is a heifer barn built in 2015, which houses all the heifers and dry cows. The day-to-day operations are managed by Stephen, Dorothy and Andrew as well as three part-time milkers.
MANAGEMENT
The main goal of Wigmana’s management program is to increase longevity. Their ideal cow (in either breed) is wide and strong, with capacity to intake and utilize large amounts of forages, moving on a correct set of feet and legs with a well at-
tached udder. Their animals are classified to benchmark and track improvements in the conformation of the herd.
The Frankland’s use milk-recording services for more than just tracking milk volume and components; it also helps them monitor key health indicators like ketosis and pregnancies. All breeding is done through AI, with Semex sires being their top choice due the family’s commitment to supporting Canadian companies. A GEA cow scout monitoring system is the primary method for detecting heats, with CIDR-synchs used occasionally. Wigmana has long utilized sexed semen and beef on dairy, with about half of their calves now sired by beef bulls, allowing them to focus on the superior genetics within their herd for better productivity.
A comprehensive vaccination program, developed in collaboration with Markdale Veterinary Services, aims to minimize abortions and enhance udder health. Continuous improvements in cow comfort, including water beds, stall adjustments, fans, feed line sprinklers, activity monitoring systems, and robotic feed pushers, have contributed to the increased longevity and productivity of the Wigmana herd.

Chez Wigmana Farms, la santé des veaux est la plus grande priorité. Les veaux sont élevés dans des huches extérieures, recevant une ration équilibrée de lait entier, de moulée et de foin. Les veaux Jerseys reçoivent jusqu’à six litres de lait par jour tandis que les veaux Holsteins en reçoivent neuf litres par jour. Ils ont remarqué que des gestes proactifs, comme la vaccination pour la pneumonie et le cryptosporidium, sont essentiels pour éviter les maladies chez les jeunes sujets.
Wigmana travaille étroitement avec Brian Llewellyn de Grand Valley Fortifiers pour les besoins notionnels de leur troupeau. Les fourrages sont récoltés à la ferme par des contracteurs à forfait. Les grains additionnels et les protéines sont achetés pour compléter les fourrages récoltés à la ferme.
LA FERME ET LES INSTALLATIONS
Wigmana Farms cultive environ 200 acres en rotation de trois ans de foin, principalement de la luzerne et des herbes, suivi de deux ans d’ensilage de maïs. En plus, la ferme possède 60 acres de pâturages permanents pour leur troupeau laitier et pour leur troupeau de 150 brebis et quelques animaux de boucherie.
Les vaches en lactation sont logées confortablement dans une étable libre de quatre rangées tête-à-tête construite en 2003. La production laitière est efficacement gérée par un salon double huit en épi, où les vaches sont traites deux fois par jour. Attenant à l’étable principale, on retrouve une étable pour les taures construite en 2015 qui loge les taures et les vaches taries. Les opérations quotidiennes sont effectuées par Stephen, Dorothy et Andrew ainsi que trois trayeurs de relève à temps partiel.

GESTION
Le but principal du programme de gestion de Wigmana est d’augmenter la longévité. Leur vache idéale (dans les deux races) est large et solide avec la capacité d’assimiler de grandes quantités de fourrages, a de bons pieds et membres et un pis bien attaché. Leurs animaux sont classifiés pour noter et suivre les améliorations dans la conformation du troupeau.
Les Frankland utilisent le contrôle laitier non seulement pour suivre le volume et les composantes du lait mais pour les aider à surveiller les indicateurs de santé comme la cétose et les gestations. Toutes les inséminations sont faites par IA, les taureaux de Semex étant leurs premiers choix surtout pour l’engagement de la famille à supporter des compagnies canadiennes. Un système de régie des vaches GEA est la méthode principale pour la détection des chaleurs, avec des CIDR-synchs à l’occasion. Wigmana utilise depuis longtemps de la semence sexée sur leurs animaux laitiers et de boucherie et environ la moitié de leurs veaux proviennent maintenant de taureaux de boucherie ce qui leur permet de se concentrer sur la génétique supérieure au sein de leur troupeau pour une meilleure productivité.
Un programme complet de vaccination, développé en collaboration avec Markdale Veterinary Services, vise à minimiser les avortements et améliorer la santé du pis. Des améliorations continues pour le confort des vaches, incluant des matelas d’eau, des ajustements aux stalles, des ventilateurs, un système d’aspersion des aliments, un système de surveillance de l’activité et des poussoirs automatique d’aliments ont tous contribué à l’augmentation de la longévité et à la productivité du troupeau Wigmana.

Bridon Farms Inc., a generational dairy farm owned and operated by the Sayles family, is located just ten minutes northwest of Paris, Ontario The farm was established in 1964 by Brian and Donna Sayles, and by the mid-1980s they were milking 20 Holsteins and 60 Jerseys in a tie-stall barn. It remained this size while sons Bruce and Jeff grew up, went to college and returned to the farm after graduating. In 2014, the tie-stall was replaced with a compost pack barn and DeLaval robots. The Jersey cow’s high milk value, great feed efficiency and ability to breed true contributed to Bridon’s decision to go 100% Jersey, and there are now anywhere from 105–115 cows in lactation at a time.
Bruce’s son, Brent, has also joined the day-to-day operations of the farm, helping his dad manage the milking cows and breeding program. Jeff manages the calf and heifer barns as well as taking care of general maintenance and tractor work. All family members, including Brian, help whenever needed. The Sayles harvest all their own forages, which consists of almost equal parts corn, hay, beans, and wheat on over 500 acres. They work with Parion Animal Nutrition to balance their rations and for purchasing robot pellets and other supplements. Their newborn calves receive quality colostrum within two hours as well as selenium, Dexafar, First Defense and any necessary vaccinations. Calves are housed in individual pens for the first 10 days and then moved to group housing with an automatic calf feeder. A vet completes routine herd health checks, and the family consults with a nutritionist frequently to provide the best support for their animals.
The ideal Bridon cow has optimal capacity with a good set of feet and legs and strong mammary system attachments, making her well-balanced for production and components with pleasing confor-
mation. Two cows come to mind when the Sayles family recalls their foundational animals: Jaspar Renaissance’s Evening EX 91-3E (8-5), a 20 Star Brood cow with three All Canadian titles and five Gold and one Platinum production awards; and Huronia Centurion Virginia EX 93-3E (7-3), a 19 Star Brood cow with multiple Silver and Gold production awards to her name. One of Evening’s granddaughters, Bridon Legion Essence ET EX 92-3E (9-6), has also received Silver and Platinum production awards and is one of Bruce’s favourite cows.
The Sayles family enjoys breeding cows and observing how cow families develop over time. They perform their own AI, and selectively genomic test approximately 10-15% of the herd. Classification is a key tool they use to assist in marketing their genetics, and another way is by showing. Bridon is an annual exhibitor at many Southern Ontario shows, as well as the National Jersey Show, at which they won the Premier Exhibitor banner in 2022 in Toronto at the Royal, and in 2021 when the show was held in Ancaster, ON. Both Bruce and Jeff’s children have competed and been successful in dairy 4-H in recent years as well. They find that shows allow
them to compete and compare with other breeders as well as provide the opportunity socialize with like-minded people.
Though the Sayles family admits there are growth challenges in both the dairy and land base, they are optimistic about the next generation. Their succession planning continues to evolve as they work towards incorporating the younger generation into the farm. With three Jersey Canada Constructive Breeder awards, two Jersey Canada Master Breeder awards and one Holstein Canada Master Breeder award, one could say Bridon has laid a solid foundation for the future of their herd. • • •

tournent à la ferme après leurs études. En 2014, l’étable entravée fut remplacée par une grange sur litière accumulée et des robots DeLaval. La grande valeur du lait de la vache Jersey, une grande efficacité alimentaire et la capacité à bien se reproduire a contribué à la décision de Bridon de se convertir à 100 % aux Jerseys et il y a aujourd’hui entre 105 et 115 vaches en lactation en tout temps.
Le fils de Bruce, Brent, s’est aussi joint aux opérations quotidiennes de la ferme, aidant son père à gérer les vaches en lactation et le programme d’accouplement. Jeff gère les étables de veaux et de génisses tout en faisant l’entretien général et les travaux avec le tracteur.
Tous les membres de la famille, incluant Brian, aident lorsque nécessaire. Les Sayles produisent leurs propres fourrages qui consistent en parts presqu’égales de maïs, de foin, de fèves et de blé sur 500 acres. Ils travaillent avec la Parion Feed Company pour équilibrer leurs rations et pour l’achat des concentrés pour le robot et les autres suppléments. Leurs veaux nouveau-nés reçoivent du colostrum de qualité dans les deux heures suivant la naissance ainsi que du sélénium, du Dexafar, du First Defense et tous les vaccins nécessaires. Les veaux sont logés dans des parcs individuels pour les 10 premiers jours puis déplacés vers du logement en groupe avec une alimentation automatisée. Un vétérinaire effectue des visites régulières de santé du troupeau et la famille consulte un nutritionniste fréquemment pour fournir le meilleur support à leurs animaux.
Pour Bridon, la vache idéale a une capacité optimale avec de bons pieds et membres et un attachement solide du système mammaire qui la rend bien équilibrée pour la production et les composantes tout en ayant une conformation plaisante. Deux vaches viennent en tête lorsque la famille Sayles parle de

La famille Sayles aime élever des vaches et observer comment les familles de vaches évoluent avec le temps. By rolling up his sleeves, listening to advice, and persevering, Pier-Luc Lajoie from Gaspésie has managed to rank among the best Jersey breeders in the country in just a few years.
Passionate about the dairy industry, after working on his uncle's farm, Pier-Luc planned to pursue his studies in agronomy at university, while studying at the Quebec Institute of Food Technology (ITAQ) from 2007 to 2009 in La Pocatière.
The 33-year-old farmer, however, seized the opportunity to acquire a farm in his region, Carleton-sur-Mer, at
the end of his college career. He transformed the facilities to start milking 30 Jersey cows on December 1, 2012.
"At 22, I had the goal of processing milk," explained Pier-Luc. "The project to start a creamery did not materialize. However, (Jerseys were) a breed that I found endearing and where genetics were less expensive compared to Holsteins. It was a bit easier to stand out and evolve quickly."
And if he wanted to stand out, the owner of Ferme Laitjoie can say mission accomplished. Alongside his partner Roxanne Bureau, who also discovered a passion for dairy production,
Pier-Luc won a Jersey Canada Constructive Breeder award in 2024. The award follows the same criteria as the Master Breeder distinction but is calculated over a five-year period.
RAPID GROWTH
In just 12 years, Ferme Laitjoie's production quota has increased from 24 kg of fat to 140 kg. The operation relies on 100 lactating cows, including 13 Holsteins. The herd classification includes 12 excellent, 50 very good, and 20 good-plus cows.
Today, the farm cultivates nearly 170 hectares of cereals, corn silage, and forage.

"I am proud of the overall journey," said Pier-Luc. "I started with little knowledge, and we built buildings to expand the barn. Without fear, I have always pushed forward. Projects kept me engaged."
Wise purchases helped the farm quickly improve the herd's genetics, Pier-Luc notably cites the acquisitions of Guimo Vivaldi Lysanne and Domy Visionary Sophia in particular.
However, the generosity of several experienced breeders, who did not hesitate to share their knowledge, is an even more important factor in the farm's progression.
"I have always questioned myself," he confessed. "Everyone has something to teach you. That's my philosophy. People who enter the barn, I must listen to them. They have something to teach me. It has served me, even though sometimes there are certain people I shouldn't have listened to. If you don't try, you won't know. This go-getter side is part of me."
Long term, Pier-Luc is unsure of what the future holds. He would like to improve his quality of life with his partner and their four children, Zack, Zoé, Xavier, and William, who are respectively 8, 6, 5, and 2 years old.
"We grew rapidly with the aim of improving our quality of life," said the father. "I have a large enough business to have a year-round employee, but the labor shortage complicates things for us. We tried, unsuccessfully, to find a partner. The remoteness in Gaspési can be a barrier for some."

Passionné par l’industrie laitière, après avoir travaillé à la ferme de son oncle, Pier-Luc prévoyait poursuivre ses études en agronomie à l’université, alors qu’il étudiait à l’Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ), de 2007 à 2009, à La Pocatière.
L’agriculteur de 33 ans a toutefois sauté sur l’occasion d’acquérir une bergerie dans sa région, à Carletonsur-Mer, à la fin de son parcours collégial. Il a transformé les installations pour être en mesure de commencer à traire 30 vaches de race Jersey le 1er décembre 2012.
«À 22 ans, j’avais l’objectif de faire de la transformation avec le lait, a expliqué le principal intéressé. Le projet de lancer une fromagerie ne s’est pas concrétisé. Par ailleurs, c’est une race que je trouvais attachante et où la génétique était moins dispendieuse en comparaison à la Holstein. C’était un peu plus facile de se démarquer et d’évoluer rapidement.»
Et s’il voulait se démarquer, le propriétaire de la ferme Laitjoie peut dire mission accomplie. Accompagné de sa conjointe Roxanne Bureau, qui s’est découvert une passion pour la production laitière, Pier-Luc a remporté la distinction d’éleveur émérite en 2024. Le prix remis par Jersey Canada reprend les mêmes critères que pour la distinction de Maître Éleveur, mais il est calculé sur une période de cinq ans.
CROISSANCE FULGURANTE
En l’espace de 12 ans, la ferme Laitjoie est passée d’un quota de production de 24 kg de matières grasses à 140 kg. L’entreprise compte sur 100 vaches en lactation, dont 13 Holsteins. La classification du troupeau est notamment de 12 vaches excellentes, de 50 vaches très-bonnes et de 20 vaches bonnes-plus.

«Je suis fier du parcours dans l’ensemble, a dit Pier-Luc. J’ai commencé, je n’avais pas beaucoup de connaissances et on a construit des bâtiments pour agrandir l’étable. Sans avoir peur, j’ai toujours poussé pour avancer. Les projets m’ont tenu en haleine.»
De judicieux achats ont aidé la ferme à améliorer rapidement la génétique du troupeau, selon le propriétaire. Pier-Luc cite notamment les acquisitions de Guimo Vivaldi Lysanne et de Domy Visionary Sophia.
Cependant, la générosité de plusieurs éleveurs d’expériences, qui n’ont pas hésité à partager leurs connaissances, est un facteur encore plus important dans la progression de la ferme Laitjoie.
«Je me suis toujours remis en question, a-t-il confié. Tout le monde a quelque chose à t’apprendre. C’est ma philosophie. Les gens qui entrent dans l’étable, je dois les écouter. Ils ont quelque chose à m’apprendre. Ça m’a servi, même si, parfois, il y a certaines personnes que je n’aurais pas dû écouter. Si tu n’essaies pas, tu ne le sauras pas. Ce côté fonceur fait partie de moi.»
À long terme, Pier-Luc ignore ce que l’avenir lui réserve. Il aimerait améliorer sa qualité de vie avec sa conjointe et ses quatre enfants, Zack, Zoé, Xavier et William qui sont respectivement âgés de 8, 6, 5 et de 2 ans.
«On a grossi rapidement dans le but d’améliorer notre qualité de vie, a indiqué le père de famille. J’ai une entreprise assez grosse pour avoir un salarié à l’année, mais il y a la pénurie de main-d’œuvre qui nous complique la tâche. On a essayé, sans succès, de trouver un associé. Le dépaysement en Gaspésie peut être un frein pour certains.»

A passion for the Jersey breed has been running through Jeff Ross's veins since he was a child. He followed in the footsteps of his father John, himself Jersey Canada President in 1983, who passed on to him love for Jerseys. Like his father, Jeff was an active on boards and committees, and was a director at Jersey Quebec for nearly 20 years until 2011, in addition to serving in a governance role at Jersey Canada over the following decade.
A third generation Jersey enthusiast, Jeff knew how to take advantage of parental expertise to make cow families like Doll, among others, prosper. One of the most recognized families of the Robindale prefix is undoubtedly the Juanita family, which was the first cow purchased by Jeff at the Bovilac sale in October 1994. Not to mention that he has participated in numerous local, regional, national and international exhibitions. To this end, let us point out that he participated in the World Dairy Expo, the National Jersey Show at the Royal, Syracuse, the Expo-Printemps, Ayer’s Cliff, Sherbrooke and many others. His animals have distinguished themselves both on the local scene and outside of Quebec. Jeff remains involved in the show world by presenting the most beautiful Jerseys from farms in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec at various regional and provincial exhibitions.
Now retired and the grandfather of four grandchildren, the Robindale farm still has a very enviable record for a suc-
cessful career as a breeder. In total, there are more than 47 EX and 173 VG animals classified under the Robindale prefix, not bad at all for a milking herd of between 35 and 40 cows.

La Jersey coule dans les veines de Jeff Ross depuis sa tendre enfance. Suivant les traces de son père John (président de Jersey Canada en 1983), ce dernier lui a transmis la passion pour la race Jersey. De plus, à l’image de son père, Jeff a été un administrateur actif chez Jersey Québec pendant près de 20 ans et ce jusqu’en 2011 en plus de siéger chez Jersey Canada au cours de la décennie suivante.
3e génération de passionnés de Jersey, Jeff a su profiter de l’expertise parentale pour faire prospérer, entre-autre, la famille de vache Doll. Mais l’une des familles les plus reconnues du préfixe Robindale est sans contredit la famille des Juanita qui fut la première vache achetée par Jeff à la vente Bovilac en octobre 1994. Alan Cunnington, Al to his friends and colleagues, has made an indelible mark on the Canadian Jersey breed, connecting with new producers, ensuring they are starting with quality animals, and keeping in touch during that important period while they grow their herd.
An experienced breeder himself, Al understands the importance of setting goals and starting with strong genetics that will help achieve them. Milking a herd of 25 until 2013 under the prefix Aland, Al received a Jersey Canada Constructive Breeder award in 2014 shortly after retiring. This small but impressive herd included 14 Star Brood cows, three All Canadian winners and several nominations. There are still 10 active animals with the Aland prefix in multiple friends’ and family herds, and the Aland prefix can be found in the maternal pedigrees for current sires (as of April 2024) such as Unique Ghost (#3 GLPI and #4 Conformation), Blondin Contractor (#1 Conformation) and Blondin Classic (#2 Conformation).
Al now shares his knowledge, experience and passion for the Jersey breed with producers across the province. Melissa Hirschfeld, who lives in Chelmsford near Sudbury, first met Al over social media during her search for more information on feeding and care for a Jersey she had recently purchased.
“When I first started speaking with Al, I immediately knew that he would be instrumental to everything I was seeking access to. He was knowledgeable, humorous, and patient with my endless questions and prattling on about Jerseys. He encouraged me to seek out what I was looking for and pointed me in the right direction.”
Sound advice and a patient ear has also led Al to develop a unique relationship with several Mennonite producers in southern Ontario. In these closely connected communities, referrals from a
friend, neighbour or family member go a long way, and over the course of many years Al has been welcomed into barns and homes as a trusted resource.
Colin Martin, Sprucehedge Jerseys, a Jersey Canada Constructive Breeder in 2021, has consulted with Al for many years on sire and management considerations. Colin works with Al to select Sprucehedge animals to place in the Ontario Invitational Sale every spring and commented that Al plays an important role in organizing barn tours and meetings in their community.
“He definitely helped me put calves in the OIS which have done well, and Al always gets something planned for barn tours and meetings. He is well-known in the community among Jersey farmers.”
Jesse & Ellen Weber, farming under the Weberlea prefix in St. Clements, Ontario, first met Al in 2014 as Jesse was taking over the farm from family.
“At that time, he was helping me with breeding decisions as he was very knowledgeable in that area, as well as helping find homes for excess heifers I had at the time. We still discuss new bulls coming out and what he likes on them, as he is very knowledgeable on new sires."
Today, Al is an extension representative for Jersey Ontario and Jersey Canada, working with established producers and forming relationships with the next generation. Al has made a lasting impact in the Jersey industry through not only the cows he has bred, but just as importantly, the relationships he has developed within the Jersey community. He continues to help steer the Jersey breed, and Jersey breeders, in the right direction.

It was with his brother Hans that Robbie took over the farm from their father Hans Sr. Together, they built the Homeridge herd, and the quality of the animals they developed still resonates today despite the passing of Robbie and his brother.
For over 40 years, they worked tirelessly to develop high-quality animals that not only made the two brothers proud, but also stood out at provincial, national and international shows. Several great champions and countless show banners have made Homeridge one of Canada's most admired prefixes.
Within the business, Robbie was in charge of genetics and sire selection. He was also the one who marketed their animals, travelling to the four-corners of Quebec and beyond, as the Homeridge prefix traveled from Canada to the United States and as far as Brazil. Known for his great passion for Jerseys, Robbie was the type of salesman who guaranteed complete satisfaction for his customers by ensuring a rigorous follow-up.
While he was involved with Jersey Quebec, where he served as president in the late 1990s, Robbie was also a member of the dairy committee for Expo Brome. All those who knew him from near or far remember his good humour and how great his passion for the Jersey breed was. Barn days, local or national exhibitions and association congresses, it would be easier to note the events at which he was not present than those in which he participated. If he was not able to be present for a show, he followed it online.
Even after the sale of his herd to Daybreak Farm in 2015, Robbie still had the fire. Not only was he involved with his municipality of East Farnham, where he gave hay wagon rides during village festivals, but he was also the host of many visits to the farm where he boarded small
farm animals as well as heifers. Anyone who spoke to him in his later years could still clearly see his passion for the breed burning within him.

C’est avec son frère Hans que Robbie a repris la ferme de leur père Hans Sr. Ensemble, ils ont développé le troupeau Homeridge dont la qualité des sujets développés résonne encore à nos oreilles aujourd’hui malgré les décès de Robbie et de son frère.
En plus de 40 ans, ils ont travaillé d’arrache-pied à développer des animaux de haute qualité qui ont non seulement fait la fierté des deux frères, mais qui se sont également démarqués aux jugements provinciaux, nationaux et à l’international.
Plusieurs grandes championnes et un nombre incalculable de bannières d’expositions ont fait d’Homeridge l’un des préfixes les plus admirés au Canada.
Au sein de l’entreprise, Robbie avait la charge de la génétique et du choix des taureaux. C’est également lui qui commercialisait ses sujets qui prenaient la route aux quatre coins du Québec et à
l’étranger. Le préfixe Homeridge a ainsi voyagé du Canada aux États-Unis et jusqu’au Brésil. Connu pour sa grande passion de la Jersey, Robbie était le genre de vendeur à s’assurer de l’entière satisfaction de ses clients en assurant un suivi rigoureux.
Impliqué au sein de Jersey Québec où il a d’ailleurs assuré la présidence à la fin des années 1990, Robbie était également membre du comité laitier de l’exposition de Brome. Tous ceux qui l’ont côtoyé de près ou de loin se rappellent sa bonne humeur et rares étaient les événements où il n’était pas présent. Journées d’étable, expositions locales ou nationales, congrès de l’association, il serait plus facile de noter les événements auxquels il n’était pas présent que ceux auxquels il a participé. D’ailleurs, s’il n’était pas en mesure d’être présent pour un jugement, il l’écoutait en ligne. C’est dire à quel point sa passion pour les Jersey était grande.
Même après la vente de son troupeau à la ferme DayBreak en 2015, Robbie avait toujours le feu sacré. Non seulement était-il impliqué auprès de sa municipalité d’East-Farnham où il donnait des tours de charette durant les fêtes du village, mais il était également l’hôte de nombreuses visites à la ferme où il gardait en pension des petits animaux de ferme ainsi que des taures.
Robbie était un chic type toujours souriant et prêt à rendre service. Il aimait lire, suivre de près le hockey, le football ainsi que le baseball. Et quiconque a pu discuter avec lui a pu confirmer la flamme de l’élevage qui brûlait en lui, même après toutes ces années. Sans oublier qu’il aimait bien partager son opinion… surtout en politique!

JERSEY YOUNG ACHIEVERS | JEUNES MÉRITANT JERSEY
Chris and Jenna farm under the Mixin Moos prefix, with their daughter Reese and Jenna's father Ralph Elliott. They milk about 30 cows and farm 200 acres near Sarnia, Ontario.
They started switching over to Jerseys in 1999, with purchases from other breeders and a couple of sales. By 2020 the herd was 100% Jersey. Jenna showed several Jersey calves very successfully in 4-H, with a couple of highlights being homebred Mixin Moos Synergy Ava being nominated All Canadian 4-H, and Mixin Moos Iatola Cassie also being nominated All Canadian for 4-H. Jenna also exhibited Charlyn Justice Beauty to 1st place Senior Calf and Reserve Jr Champion at the Royal, and went on to be All Canadian 4-H calf. They have developed a very balanced herd with a few homebred favourites being:

In addition to assisting Ralph with the farm, both Jenna and Chris hold outside jobs. Jenna as a nurse, and Chris as a construction foreman.
Showing has always been a favourite past time, with Mixin Moos cattle starting to garner lots of attention. Royal results in 2023 showcased their passion for high-type cattle. They exhibited the 1st place Junior Calf who went on to be All Ontario and All Canadian as well as the 6th place Senior Calf and 3rd place Winter Yearling. They also won the Junior Breeder’s Herd, which became All Ontario and All Canadian. To top it off they also received the Junior Breeder Banner.
Chris et Jenna gèrent leur ferme sous le préfixe Mixin Moos avec leur fille Reese et le père de Jenna, Ralph Elliott. Ils ont environ 30 vaches en lactation sur leur ferme de 200 acres près de Sarnia, Ontario.
Ils ont commencé à se tourner vers les Jerseys en 1999 avec des achats provenant d’autres éleveurs et de quelques ventes. En 2020, le troupeau était composé de Jerseys à 100 %. Jenna et Chris travaillent à l’extérieur de la ferme tout en aidant Ralph. Jenna est infirmière et Chris est contremaître en construction.
Les expositions ont toujours été un des passe-temps préférés et les animaux Mixin Moos ont commencé à gagner beaucoup d’attention. Les résultats de la Royale de cette année démontrent leur passion pour ce genre d’animaux. Ils ont présenté la 1e place Veau Junior qui est aussi été Tout Canadien et Tout Ontario, ainsi que la 6e place Veau Senior et la 3e place 1 An de l’hiver. Ils ont aussi remporté le Troupeau de l’Éleveur Junior qui fut aussi Tout Canadien et Tout Ontario. Pour couronner le tout, ils ont remporté la bannière Éleveur Junior à la Royal également.

JERSEY YOUNG ACHIEVERS | JEUNES MÉRITANT JERSEY
Carmen & Hiske, along with their girls Maelynn and Carleigh, milk 65 Jerseys in a tie-stall barn, purchased as an ongoing operation in 2012. When Hiske finished school at the University of Guelph, the herd was mostly crossbred. Hiske gradually developed it into a purebred Jersey herd, buying cattle from Rich Valley, Bri-Lin, and Paullor.
Carmen joined Hiske in operating the farm and they married in July 2016. Carmen has been a director and is current Past President of Oxford Jersey Club.
Carmen & Hiske have exhibited at the Royal, regularly exhibit at the Oxford-Southwestern Jersey Show, and participate in Oxford’s Barn Cow compe-
tition, where they usually receive awards for high placing individuals.
Cows that have left a mark in their herd are:

Outside of the dairy industry, Hiske serves on the Home & School Committee at the girls’ school, while Carmen volunteers on the Tillsonburg Skating Club CanSkate carnival organization committee.
The MacKays also own & operate MacKay Candle Company, handmaking high-quality, beautifully scented candles and wax melts. They own a flock
of sheep, and Hiske assists at her mom’s horse riding stable where they teach English riding and vaulting.
Carmen et Hiske, ainsi que leurs filles, Maelynn et Carleigh, ont 65 Jerseys en lactation dans une étable entravée, ferme existante qu’ils ont achetée en 2012. Carmen et Hiske ont présenté à la Royale, présentent régulièrement à l’exposition Jersey Oxford-Southwestern et participent à la compétition Barn Cow d’Oxford où ils reçoivent habituellement des prix pour leurs meilleurs animaux.

Les MacKay appartiennent et gèrent MacKay Candle Company, fabriquant de magnifiques chandelles et cires aromatiques de haute qualité. Ils appartiennent un troupeau de moutons et Hiske aide sa mère dans son écurie où ils enseignent l’équitation à l’anglaise et les sauts.

YOUTH OF DISTINCTION | JEUNE DE DISTINCTION
Brent is the son of Bruce and Carolyn Sayles of Bridon Farms Inc. in Paris, ON. He’s been actively involved on the farm since a young age and currently works on the daily operations with his father and uncle.
Brent exhibited dairy heifers in 4-H, was a valued member on the 7th place, 2018 Ontario Judging Team in Madison, Wisconsin and represented Canada at the European Young Breeder’s School (EYBS) in Belgium in 2019 finishing as the Reserve Grand Champion Showperson. He’s also been gaining experience fitting and clipping cattle in the show circuit and has travelled across Canada and internationally fitting for various show strings. Most recently he had the opportunity to assist with preparing the 2023 Supreme Champion at the World Dairy Expo, Erbacres Snapple Shakira. This past winter he was invited to lead a clipping clinic for a team in Australia as they prepare for the EYBS. He has also participated in judging clinics and judged his first 4-H show in the fall of 2023.
Brent’s passion for the Jersey breed has led him to become involved with Jersey Ontario as a member of both the Promotion Committee and the Ontario Invitational Sale Committee. His youthful vision and fitting skills have been highly valued by the organization.
Overall, Brent’s friendly and helpful demeanor, knowledge, leadership skills and passion for the Jersey breed will establish him as one of the future leaders for the breed, as well as the dairy industry. •

La passion de Brent pour la race Jersey l’a mené à être actif auprès de Jersey Ontario en tant que membre du Comité de promotion et du Comité de la vente Ontario Invitational. Sa vision jeune et ses talents de préparateur sont grandement appréciés par l’organisation.
En général, l’attitude amicale et avenante de Brent, ses connaissances, ses habiletés de leadership et sa passion pour la race Jersey lui confère le poste de futur leader de la race et de l’industrie laitière.

Wyngold Farms, located in Lansdowne, Ontario, is owned by Dawn and John Wynands, who are also second-generation owners of Wynands Farms, a Holstein operation in Cardinal, Ontario.
Wyngold was purchased in April 2022, though milking did not begin until June 2023 as the barn required renovations and was retrofitted into a free stall with two used Lely A4 robots. The farm now houses a herd of 150 Jerseys, with 100 cows currently in lactation. Wyngold is managed by the Wynands’ daughter, Alex, and her partner, William Howe. Both Alex and Will have been heavily involved in the dairy industry from a young age. Alex, who grew up on Wynands Farms, has a BSc. in Agriculture from the University of Guelph and has worked as a herdsperson with experience in dairy nutrition. Will started working on a dairy farm at the age of 13 and enjoys the equipment side of the operation. Alex provided some insight on how the transition to Jerseys has been so far.
THE JERSEY JOURNEY
We have Holsteins at the home farm, so Jerseys were a change for us. The facility we purchased had a narrow head-tohead tie-stall. To maximize the space and fit in enough stalls, we thought Jerseys would work better in the space available. We toured a lot of retrofit Jersey robot barns, and we liked how the Jerseys worked with the robots. As a bonus, I am not a very big person, so I am happy to work with smaller cows. Once we made the final decision to switch to Jerseys, we never looked back.
them to do what they want, and they have their routines. We currently have zero fetch-cows. Calves have been a challenge and there has been a learning curve in keeping everyone healthy. We have made changes to our colostrum management and cleanliness and that has put us back on the right track.
HERD MANAGEMENT & TECHNOLOGY

My management style has also changed since getting Jerseys, they do not move the same as Holsteins! They like to stand close by and touch me. I have learned I can hold them to give a treatment and I can easily lock them up with a pellet snack. I enjoy breeding without needing to stand on a milk crate! They are rarely fazed, and they love exploring an open gate, especially if they aren’t supposed to go through it. The robots allow
As a new herd, we are continuing to learn and optimize our systems. We would like to keep farming and have great cows that milk well and look good. Our heifer facility is not ideal, so we plan to raise only the heifers that we need. We breed more than 50% to beef and use sexed semen on the best heifers and cows.
Robots have been an amazing new management tool for us. We like that they keep our cows happy and healthy. We have created daily reports that have everything we need to keep track of milk quality, milk temperature, and daily production. We also use a mating program

with EastGen to reduce our inbreeding coefficient and to not breed the JH1 gene. To manage our feed and nutrition program we work closely with nutritionist Mario Leclerc. We have 260 acres of cultivated land to produce a variety of crops, including corn silage, baleage, straw, soy and dry corn, all essential components of our partial mixed ration (PMR) for feeding the herd. We have noticed that the Jerseys can be quite picky with feed and if it’s not good quality they aren’t going to eat it!
CHANGES HERE AND THERE
We made a lot of changes and decisions over the last two years of owning the farm. Overall, I am very happy with the barn design and upgrades. We have an open concept barn so it can be a challenge to sort cows on your own if they don’t want to be sorted. This may just be a limitation of our facility as we do not have a good way to improve that without impeding cow flow.
Some changes I would like to see in the dairy industry are higher standards for cow welfare and health. I would also like to see more focus on farmer mental health. I have amazing farming friends that got me through the first few months of our start-up. I would like everyone to have the support they need during tough periods on the farm. We are fortunate to have this opportunity and can't thank our families enough for their help and support we've had along the way.

LE PARCOURS JERSEY
Nous avons des Holsteins à la ferme principale, donc les Jerseys nous amènent un changement. Les installations que nous avons achetées comprenaient des stalles étroites attachées tête-à-tête donc nous avons pensé que des Jersey seraient plus appropriées pour l’espace qu’on avait. Nous avons visité plusieurs étables rénovées en fermes robotisées Jersey et nous avons aimé la façon dont les Jerseys se comportaient avec les robots. En plus, je ne suis pas grande donc j’étais heureuse de travailler avec de plus petites vaches. Une fois la décision finale prise de faire la transition vers les Jerseys, nous n’avons pas changé d’idée. Mon style de gestion a aussi changé depuis les Jerseys car elles ne se déplacent pas de la même façon que les Holsteins! Elles aiment se tenir proche et
me toucher. J’ai appris que je peux les tenir pour leur donner un traitement et que peux facilement les attacher en les attirant avec une gâterie de supplément. J’aime pouvoir les saillir sans avoir à me tenir sur une caisse de lait! Elles sont rarement nerveuses et elles aiment explorer une barrière laissée ouverte, surtout si elles ne doivent pas s’y aventurer. Les robots leur permettent de faire ce qu’elles veulent et elles ont leur routine. Nous n’avons aucune vache présentement que l’on doit aller chercher. Les veaux ont présenté un défi et il y a eu une courbe d’apprentissage pour que tous soient en santé. Nous avons apporté des changements à la gestion de notre colostrum et de la salubrité ce qui nous a remis sur le bon chemin.
GESTION DE TROUPEAU ET TECHNOLOGIE
Comme nous sommes un nouveau troupeau, nous continuons à apprendre et à optimiser nos systèmes. Nous aimerions continuer notre ferme et avoir de bonnes vaches qui produisent bien et qui sont belles à voir. Nos installations pour les génisses ne sont pas idéales donc nous planifions n’élever que les génisses dont nous avons besoin. Nous utilisons plus de 50 % de semence d’animaux de boucherie et utilisons de la semence sexée dans nos meilleures taures et vaches.
Les robots furent un merveilleux nouvel outil de gestion pour nous. Nous aimons qu’ils gardent nos vaches heureuses et en santé. Nous avons créé des rapports quotidiens qui ont tout ce dont nous avons besoin pour surveiller la qualité du lait, la température du lait et la production quotidienne. Nous utilisons

aussi un programme d’accouplement avec EastGen pour réduire le coefficient de consanguinité et pour ne pas saillir avec le gène JH1.
Pour gérer nos aliments et le programme d’alimentation, nous travaillons étroitement avec le nutritionniste Mario Leclerc. Nous avons 260 acres de terrain cultivable pour produire une variété de récoltes dont du maïs à ensiler, du foin à ensiler, de la paille, du soya, du maïs sec et tous les éléments essentiels pour notre ration partielle mélangée (RPM) pour l’alimentation du troupeau. Nous avons remarqué que les Jerseys pouvaient être très sélectives pour les aliments et que si ce n’est pas de bonne qualité, elles ne le mangeront pas!

Nous avons apporté plusieurs changements et pris plusieurs décisions depuis que nous avons pris possession il y a deux ans. En général, je suis très heureuse avec le design de l’étable et les améliorations apportées. Nous avons une étable à concept ouvert et ça peut

Al partage maintenant ses connaissances, son expérience et sa passion pour la race Jersey avec les producteurs de toute la province. Melissa Hirschfeld, qui demeure à Chelmsford près de Sudbury, a rencontré Al par les médias sociaux dans sa recherche d’informations sur l’alimentation et le soin des Jerseys qu’elle venait d’acheter.

Ceci peut n’être qu’une limite de notre étable car nous n’avons pas de solution pour améliorer ceci sans entraver le déplacement des vaches. Pour l’industrie laitière, j’aimerais voir certains changements dont de plus hautes normes pour le bien-être et la
ce que je cherchais et m’a pointé dans la bonne direction. »
Des conseils avisés et une oreille attentive a mené Al à développer des relations solides avec plusieurs producteurs Mennonites du sud de l’Ontario. Dans ces communautés étroitement liées, la référence d’un ami, d’un voisin ou d’un membre de la famille est respectée et, au fil des ans, Al a été accueilli dans des étables et des foyers comme une ressource fiable.
Colin Martin, de Sprucehedge Jerseys, un Éleveur Émérite de Jersey Canada en 2021, a consulté Al pendant plusieurs années sur le choix de taux et des décisions de gestion. Colin travaille avec Al pour sélectionner les animaux Sprucehedge pour la vente Ontario Invitational (OIS) chaque printemps et mentionne qu’Al a joué un rôle important dans l’organisation de visites de fermes et de réunions dans leur communauté.

Jesse & Ellen Weber, qui opèrent sous le préfixe Weberlea à St. Clements, Ontario, ont rencontré Al en 2014 alors que Jesse reprenait la ferme familiale.

Updates and information on HPAI for Canadian dairy farmers
The progression of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in dairy herds across the United States requires heightened biosecurity measures on farms in Canada. As we still know little about this emerging disease and how it is spreading in North America, enhanced biosecurity measures aim to cover various possibilities of transmission.
At time of this writing, there have been no confirmed cases of HPAI in Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) are monitoring the situation closely, and Dairy Farmers of Canada is working closely with them and other experts on specific recommendations for heightened vigilance and biosecurity on Canadian farms.
What dairy farmers should know about HPAI
HPAI is primarily spread by wild birds to animals. It can be spread on farms by people carrying matter from infected birds — such as dust, dander, and bird droppings - on their clothing, gloves, soles of their shoes, vehicle tires, animal trailers and other equipment, in addition to contaminated water. If a farmer finds a dead bird on their property, they should avoid handling it. Contact the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative immediately.
Clinical signs of HPAI include:
• Decreased herd level milk production;
• Acute sudden drop in production with some severely impacted;
• Cows experiencing thicker, concentrated, colostrum-like milk;
• A decrease in feed consumption with a simultaneous drop in rumen motility;
• Abnormal tacky or loose feces, and some fever;
• Producers with impacted herds have reported older cows in mid-lactation may be more likely to be severely impacted than younger cows and fresh cows or heifers.
It is important to remember that pasteurization kills harmful bacteria and viruses without affecting nutritional properties. Pasteurized cow’s milk and milk products remain safe to consume.
Farmers can protect cattle by heat-treating milk given to calves or any animals on farm and continuing to follow biosecurity measures. If a farmer or expert notices cows presenting symptoms, the animals should be isolated, and the herd veterinarian contacted immediately.
Heightened biosecurity measures on dairy farms will help prevent possible risks associated with this new disease. These measures also include restricting farm visits and ensuring that only people who need to be on farm are allowed and are following all recommended biosecurity measures. The recommendations aim to empower farmers to protect their operations and are based on proAction® biosecurity measures and universal recommendations to prevent an outbreak (Being Vigilant About Animal Introductions) and guidance from CFIA.
HPAI and animal movement
Preventing transmission from cow to cow will mean avoiding animal movements, indicating it’s a good time to keep a closed herd. If introducing new animals to the herd is absolutely necessary, animals should be isolated and monitored for clinical signs of HPAI for 21 days, especially if there is a risk these animals were in contact with animals from affected areas. After moving cattle, farmers should disinfect the livestock trailer and isolate cows displaying symptoms, so they do not have access to the same feed, water and air as healthy cattle.
Farmers should closely follow heightened biosecurity practices and update their standard operating procedures for re-introduction of cattle from the proAction program. As the situation evolves, please check the CFIA website for updates.

With his family by his side, Ron Hodgson of Minnedosa, Manitoba passed away peacefully on January 11th, 2024 at Brandon General Hospital at the age of 80 years.
Ron and his wife Kay Hodgson began milking Jersey cows and shipping cream in 1974 near Clanwilliam, Manitoba, along with their three children Diane, Norman and Stephen.
In 1982, Ron was given the opportunity to work for the Canadian government teaching farming techniques in Tanzania. Ron and Kay sold the cows and rented out the house, heading off on a grand adventure for the next five years. Ron taught Tanzanians to grow and harvest wheat, flying home to Canada to purchase equipment, and to help settle his oldest kids as they graduated.
When they returned to Canada in 1987, they picked up where they left off - farming and milking cows in
Clanwilliam until they retired. Sadly, Kay passed away in 2006 after a short battle with cancer.
Ron remarried in 2007. Surviving him are his wife Gerri and their combined families including Ron’s daughter Diane (Terry), their son Andrew (Staci), Eric and Ethan, and their daughter, Dayna (Travis), Jaixon, Zander and Taitym. Ron is also survived by Ron’s son Norman (Lorraine), their daughter Nicole (Michael), Maverick and their son Sean (Tawny). As well as Ron’s son Stephen (Brandi) and their son Michael (Kayla), Levi, Talia and their daughter Victoria.
Gerri’s children include her son Andrew (Tanya) Taylor, Grady, Luke and Rebekah, daughter Heather, daughter Erin (Arron) Ashton, Julie, daughter Kellie (Lyle) Jordan, Josh, Christian, daughter Carrie (Dale) Kate, Will and son Ryan.
Ron was predeceased by his wife Kay, sister Marilyn, his Mom and Dad, Kay’s parents and Gerri’s mom and sister. All together, Ron was very proud to have 17 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
En 1982, Ron a eu l’opportunité de travailler pour le gouvernement canadien pour enseigner des techniques agricoles en Tanzanie. Ron s’est remarié en 2007. Lui survivent son épouse Gerri et leurs familles combinées incluant la fille de Ron, Diane (Terry), leurs fils Andrew (Staci), Eric et Ethan, ainsi que leur fille, Dayna (Travis), Jaixon, Zander et Taitym. Lui survit le fils de Ron, Norman (Lorraine), leur fille, Nicole (Michael), Maverick et leur fils Sean (Tawny). Également le fils de Ron, Stephen (Brandi) et leur fils Michael (Kayla), Levi, Talia et leur fille Victoria.
C’est entouré de sa famille que Ron Hodgson de Minnedosa, MB s’est éteint paisiblement le 11 janvier 2024 au Brandon General Hospital à l’âge de 80 ans.

After a brief illness, Harvey Lloyd Risebrough, formerly of Oakwood, Ontario, passed away peacefully at the Ross Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 30, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was in his 82nd year. Harvey is predeceased by his parents John (1990) and Elsie (2002) Risebrough. Survived by his dear wife Janet (Davidson) Risebrough, daughters Nancy (Douglas Hill), Carol (Andrew Dunsmore), Jackie (Trevor Jones) and Adele (Nigel Samuel), as well as grandchildren Spencer and Malcolm Hill, Kate and Avril Dunsmore, Simon and Clara Jones, and Jack Samuel. Loving brother of Audrey (Graeme) Little. Dear brother-in-law of Mary and Jim Harris, Ann and Howard Greene, George Davidson, and Leslie and Susan Davidson. He was a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Affectionately known as Harv, he spent his early years on a lovely farm in Agincourt, Ontario. It was a meeting of fate between Janet and Harv when the Risebroughs stopped in to the Davidson farm inquiring about farms for sale in the area. The Risebrough family moved to a new farm on Highway 7 east of Oakwood in 1959, just down the road from the Davidsons. Harv and the love of his life, Janet, were married in 1967 and recently celebrated their 56th anniversary.
They were soulmates, playmates and loving partners in every sense.
Harv’s love of farming and dream of being his own boss began as a teenager when he started his dairy business at age 18. He built a high-quality registered Jersey herd over the next 30 years, earning accolades such as the Constructive Breeder and Star Brood Cow awards from the Canadian Jersey Cattle Club (now Jersey Canada), selling Jerseys across Ontario and as far away as Brazil, and having many show winners at the Royal Winter Fair.
Even with a 24/7 job on the farm, Harv had a large involvement in the community. He took on many volunteer and leadership roles with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lindsay, the Ontario Jersey Club and the Little Britain Christian Cemetery for over 30 years. A longtime member and Elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Harvey showed his faith through service. He volunteered for the Board of Managers, Finance Committee, trustees, fundraising roles and counting collection - a job he really enjoyed. Harv was a gentle, kind and loving man who will be dearly missed by all those who have known and worked with him over the years.

Il a vendu des Jerseys partout en Ontario et aussi loin qu’au Brésil et a récolté plusieurs prix lors de l’exposition agricole Royale d’hiver.
Même avec un travail 24/7 sur la ferme, Harv était très engagé dans sa communauté. Il a occupé plusieurs rôles de bénévole et de leader auprès de l’église presbytérienne de St.Andrews, Lindsay, le club Jersey de l’Ontario et du Little Britain Christian Cemetary pendant plus de 30 ans. Un membre depuis longtemps et Ancien de l’église presbytérienne St.Andrews, Harvey a démontré sa foi par le service. Il était bénévole au conseil des gestionnaire, du comité des finance, des fiduciaires, des levées de fonds et pour compter la quête – un travail qu’il aimait vraiment. Harv était un homme doux, gentil et aimant qui sera regretté par tous ceux qui l’ont connu et avec qui il a travaillé au fil des ans.

à jour et informations sur l’IAHP pour les producteurs

Comme nous en savons encore peu sur cette maladie émergente et sur la manière dont elle se propage en Amérique du Nord, les mesures de biosécurité renforcées visent à couvrir les différentes possibilités de transmission. À l’heure où nous écrivons ces lignes, aucun cas de grippe aviaire hautement pathogène n’a été confirmé au Canada. L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et l’Agence de santé publique du Canada (ASPC) suivent de près la situation et les Producteurs laitiers du Canada travaillent en étroite collaboration avec elles et d’autres experts sur des recommandations spécifiques visant à accroître la vigilance et la biosécurité dans les fermes canadiennes.
Ce que les producteurs laitiers doivent savoir sur l’IAHP
L’IAHP est principalement transmise aux animaux par les oiseaux sauvages. Elle peut être transmise dans les fermes par des personnes transportant des matières provenant d’oiseaux infectés — telles que la poussière, les phanères et les fientes d’oiseaux -— sur leurs vêtements, leurs gants, la semelle de leurs chaussures, les pneus de leurs véhicules, les remorques d’animaux et d’autres équipements, ainsi que par de l’eau contaminée. Si un producteur trouve un oiseau mort sur sa propriété, il doit éviter de le manipuler. Contactez immédiatement le Réseau canadien pour la santé de la faune.
Les signes cliniques de l’IAHP sont les suivants :
• Diminution de la production de lait au niveau du troupeau;
• Baisse soudaine de la production et certaines vaches sévèrement touchées;
• Les vaches produisent un lait plus épais, concentré et ressemblant au colostrum;
• Diminution de la consommation d’aliments et baisse simultanée de la motilité du rumen;
• Matières fécales anormales, collantes ou molles, et un peu de fièvre;
• Les producteurs ayant des troupeaux touchés ont signalé que les vaches plus âgées en milieu de lactation sont plus susceptibles d’être gravement touchées que les vaches plus jeunes et les vaches ayant récemment vêlé ou les génisses. Il est important de rappeler que la pasteurisation tue les bactéries et les virus nocifs sans affecter les propriétés nutritionnelles. Le lait de vache pasteurisé et les produits laitiers peuvent être consommés en toute sécurité.
Les producteurs peuvent protéger les animaux en soumettant le lait donné aux veaux ou à tout autre animal de la ferme à un traitement thermique et en continuant à appliquer les mesures de biosécurité. Si un producteur ou un expert constate que des vaches présentent des symptômes, les animaux doivent être isolés et le vétérinaire du troupeau doit être contacté immédiatement.
Des mesures de biosécurité renforcées dans les fermes laitières contribueront à prévenir les risques éventuels liés à cette nouvelle maladie. Il est également recommandé de limiter les visites dans les fermes et de veiller à ce que seules les personnes qui doivent s’y trouver soient autorisées dans la ferme et respectent toutes les mesures de biosécurité recommandées. Les recommandations visent à donner aux producteurs les moyens de protéger leur ferme et s’appuient sur les mesures de biosécurité et les recommandations de proActionMD pour prévenir une épidémie (Gérer l’introduction d’animaux avec vigilance), ainsi que sur les recommandations de l’ACIA.

L’IAHP et les déplacements d’animaux
La prévention de la transmission du virus d’une vache à l’autre implique qu’il faille éviter les déplacements d’animaux, ce qui signifie que c’est un bon moment pour garder le troupeau fermé. Après un déplacement d’animaux, les producteurs doivent désinfecter la remorque et isoler les vaches présentant des symptômes afin qu’elles n’aient pas accès aux mêmes aliments, à la même eau et au même air que les animaux en santé.
Les producteurs doivent suivre de près les pratiques de biosécurité renforcées et mettre à jour leurs procédures normalisées pour la réintroduction de bovins issus du programme proAction. Rules of Eligibility
Eligibility is confined to animals purchased in an Ontario Invitational Sale and remaining the registered property of the youth purchaser until the first record is completed. Partnership ownership will only be accepted as long as all of the partners are under the age of 22 at time of purchase.
• In order to be eligible for the youth production contest, the animal must be transferred into the youthcontestants name on the day of the Ontario Invitational Sale
• Buyer and owner must be a young person at least 10 years of age and under 22 years of age as of
• January 1st of the current year, residing in Canada.
• Prizes: The top 5 animals with the highest BCA average, in terms of composite BCA, will receive prize money as described below:

• There will be no entry fee
• Any calf, yearling or two year old, designated as a Youth Production Contest animal will be eligible for the contest. Milking females must not have calved before 30 days from the sale date.
• Animals must complete a lactation of 183 to 305 days in length
• Competitors in the Youth Production Contest must submit DHI certificates of production to Jersey Ontario in advance of the OIS Sale following the completion of the animal’s first record
• Winners will be decided according to the composite fat and protein BCA and, in the case of a tie, the animal with the highest BCA for protein will be declared the winner.
Note: In the case of a dispute, the decision of Jersey Ontario will be final.
