It is thrilling times for sure. Registry activity continuing to increase and classifications reaching an all-time high meant an exciting start to 2024. Membership numbers continued to climb in 2023, passing eleven hundred for the third year in a row and the last six of eight. The 1.16% increase in memberships over 2022 may seem small, but this growth tells an important story about our association and the Jersey breed in Canada.

There are over 40% fewer farms shipping milk than 20 years ago, but there are more Jerseys on those farms; registrations have almost doubled, and our membership numbers have increased by half in that same period. Steady, predictable shifting in market demand has affected component pricing and Canadian Jersey breeders are reaping the benefits of their hard work developing a breed perfect to meet these demands.

As Jerseys are added to barns, Jersey Canada is added to contact lists. Our association is a small but mighty team of staff, directors and committee members eager to offer assistance to anyone needing it. Each new Jersey Canada member adds their data to the herdbook and becomes a stakeholder in the association. There are obvious financial reasons to become a member, but there are more intangible benefits also: by investing time and effort, and money, with Jersey Canada, Jersey producers are building social capital – forming bonds and making connections with other producers –and strengthening the foundation of the

breed. This is the thread running through this success story and underpins the hard work completed over decades to realize a shared vision.

When releasing year-end statistics, we celebrate any win that is a win for Jersey producers. These accomplishments belong to members and owners, some still active and some no longer with us. People working with and for the breed over the last several decades have taken us to this point; people that have dedicated their resources to supporting and promoting not only the breed, but the breed association as well. The result is a national foundation herd built with the grist of years that is economically and environmentally sustainable for consumers, processors and producers. ‘You Jersey guys (and gals)’ are wholly responsible for these successes, enjoy.

C’est une période excitante, c’est certain. L’activité du registrariat continue d’augmenter et les classifications atteignent de nouveaux sommets ce qui fait que 2024 commence en force. Le nombre de membres a continué à grimper en 2023, dépassant 1100 pour la troisième année consécutive et six des huit dernières. L’augmentation de 1,16% du nombre de membres comparativement à 2022 peut sembler minime mais cette croissance raconte une histoire importante au sujet de notre association et de la race Jersey au Canada.

Notre association est petite mais notre équipe aguerrie de personnel, d’administrateurs et de membres de comité sont prêts à offrir de l’aide à tous ceux qui en ont besoin. Chaque nouveau membre de Jersey Canada ajoute ses données au livre généalogique et devient actionnaire de l’association. Il y a des raisons financières évidentes lorsqu’on devient membre mais il y a aussi les bénéfices intangibles : en investissant temps, effort et argent chez Jersey Canada, les producteurs Jerseys construisent un capital social – ils forment des liens et des connections avec d’autres éleveurs – et solidifient la fondation de la race. C’est le fil qui relie cette histoire à succès et souligne le travail acharné accompli au fil des décennies pour réaliser une vision commune.

Avec le dévoilement des statistiques de fin d’année, nous célébrons tout succès qui est un succès pour les producteurs de Jerseys. Ces accomplissements appartiennent aux membres et propriétaires, certains encore actifs et d’autres qui ne sont plus de ce monde. Des gens qui, travaillant avec et pour la race pendant plusieurs décennies, nous ont mené jusqu’ici. Des gens qui ont utilisé leurs ressources pour supporter et faire la promotion non seulement de la race mais de l’association de race également. Tout en tolérant les amis et voisins qui récitent ce vieil adage ‘trop pauvre pour traire des Holsteins’ et continuant quand même, vous, les ‘gars (et les filles) Jerseys’ êtes responsables de tous ces succès. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DU PRESIDENT

In writing this I reflect on the last nine years that I have served on the board and what I want my final message to be. Nine years ago, serving on the board wasn't necessarily in my short-term projects as we were awaiting the birth of our first child. With the encouragement from fellow breeders, I agreed to fill a vacant seat. It has been challenging at times to say the least but the advantages of being a part of this outstanding organization makes it worth it. It has given me the opportunity to travel to AGMs across the country, visit farms and businesses and meet people whom I probably wouldn't have on my own. I've been a part of multiple strategic planning sessions over the years as well as worked on policies and procedures with fellow board members. We've done hours of governance training and gained experience working with HR representatives and I've had the opportunity to present awards to some of the most influential people of our breed, just to name a few of the highlights. It is often difficult to find people to take our seats on the board when we are done. I think most believe that you need to have a breed topping herd for index, production or show to be a part of the board of directors. I want my final message to be

that if you are aware of where the Jersey breed has come from and passionate about where it is going then stepping up to take part in a committee or to sit on the board is for you.

I hope to see you all at our AGM in Orford, QC. The Estrie Jersey Club along with Jersey Québec have been working diligently to bring you an exciting weekend.

En écrivant ceci, je me remémore les neuf dernières années où j’ai siégé au conseil et ce que devrait être mon dernier message. Il y a neuf ans, siéger au conseil n’était pas nécessairement dans mes projets à court terme car nous attendions la naissance de notre premier enfant. Avec l’encouragement d’autres éleveurs, j’ai accepté de remplir le poste vacant. Ce fut tout un défi parfois, c’est certain, mais les avantages de faire partie d’une organisation hors pair fait que ça en vaut la peine. J’ai eu la chance de voyager aux AGA partout au pays, visiter des fermes et des entreprises tout en rencontrant des gens que je n’aurais probablement jamais rencontré sinon. J’ai pris part à de multiples rencontres de planification stratégique au fil des ans ainsi que

travaillé sur des politiques et procédures avec les autres membres du conseil. Nous avons suivi plusieurs heures de formation en gouvernance et gagné de l’expérience de travail avec des représentants de ressource humaine et j’ai eu l’opportunité de présenter des prix à des gens les plus influents de notre race. Et ce n’est que quelques points saillants. C’est souvent difficile de trouver des gens pour prendre notre place au conseil quand notre mandat se termine. Je pense que plusieurs croient que vous devez avoir un troupeau exceptionnel pour l’index, la production et les expositions pour faire partie du conseil d’administration. Je veux que mon message ultime soit que je pense que si vous êtes au courant d’où vient la race Jersey et êtes passionné pour son avenir, alors prendre part à un comité ou siéger au conseil est pour vous.

J’espère vous voir en grand nombre à l’AGA à Orford, QC. Le club Jersey de l’Estrie ainsi que Jersey Québec ont travaillé d’arrache-pied pour vous offrir une fin de semaine excitante.

I am so proud to be part of another record-breaking registration year and as well as a classification record! With all the economic uncertainty, breeders are still registering their Jerseys proving that there is tremendous value in owning a registered animal. A few changes occurred this year in registration. First, when registering an animal born from an embryo, we need the implant certificate if it is available. If it is not available, we need the recipient, the date of the embryo implant, date of insemination, date of the flush and how many bulls are in the flush. This provides concrete information and avoids uncertainty or erroneous information regarding the registration. It is important to double check your registration papers when you receive them or if you are working with them. Animals can be updated at any time, you just need to email me at rachel@jerseycanada.com and it will be done.

Another change is when you are importing animals from the US, you will be required to pay a transfer fee

to US Jersey before the work is completed by that association. Please note that there are two transfers fees when getting US animals, once from US Jersey and one from Jersey Canada

Je suis tellement fière de faire partie d'une autre année d'enregistrement record ainsi que d'un record de classification ! Malgré toute l'incertitude économique, les éleveurs continuent d'enregistrer leurs Jerseys, ce qui prouve qu'il y a une énorme valeur à posséder un animal enregistré. Quelques changements sont survenus cette année au niveau des enregistrements, lors de l'enregistrement d'un animal né d'un embryon, nous avons besoin du certificat d'implantation s'il est disponible. S'il n'est pas disponible, nous avons besoin de la porteuse, de la date d'implantation de l'embryon, de la date de l'insémination, de la

date de la récolte d’embryons et du nombre de taureaux dans la récolte. Cela fournit des informations concrètes et évite les incertitudes ou les informations erronées concernant l'enregistrement. Il est important de vérifier vos papiers d’enregistrement lorsque vous les avez reçus ou quand vous travaillez avec eux. Future Leaders Conference Conférence des Future Leaders

Jersey Canada’s Youth Committee sponsored $2,500 to assist an individual to attend the Future Leaders Development Program. Emma Moulton was selected by the committee to attend the conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 1214, 2024. The following is an article written by Emma discussing her experience at the conference.

The Future Leaders Development Program provided me with much knowledge regarding boards, how they run, and the importance of governance. The program was very well put together and gathered many inspirational and motivational speakers that have a lot of experience being involved in different boards inside and outside of the industry. It was motivating to be a part of such an exclusive program with many other like-minded individuals, all striving to be more successful in the industry.

Speakers such as Senator Black, Jim Brown, David Wiens and Henry Holtmann, along with many others, provided participants with valuable tools to be able to succeed on a board or on the farm. Speakers shared their experiences about their time spent on different boards while also running a farm and spending time with family. They put emphasis on time management skills as well as being able to communicate and collaborate with farm partners and family when it came to being away from home due to board activities.

The group also participated in DISC. After taking the test and determining which personality-type we were most like, we were then able to brainstorm ways that less dominant personalities could be more involved in important decision-making during meetings, on the farm, or in the family. Doing this activity stood out to me because it allowed me to see where some of my personal flaws land when it comes to interacting with people on the farm or in public. The activity has made me aware of what I need to improve on as a person and what kinds of different skills I should evolve that would benefit almost all the different types of people and their personalities.

The Future Leaders Program is a necessity when it comes to the importance of evolving our industry. It provides practical skills and knowledge that the average person might not know, along with confidence by being able to consume such valuable information and skills.

Le programme Leaders de demain (Future Leaders Development Program) m’a apporté tellement de connaissances au sujet des conseils d’administration, comment ils sont menés et l’importance de la gouvernance. Ce programme est vraiment bien organisé et rassemblait plusieurs conférenciers inspirants et motivants qui ont beaucoup d’expérience avec les différents conseils d’administration, tant dans l’industrie qu’ailleurs. C’est très motivant de prendre part à un programme si exclusif avec d’autres personnes tout autant motivées et qui cherchent à être plus épanouies dans l’industrie tout en voulant continuer à améliorer ce que l’on possède déjà.

Les conférenciers, comme le Sénateur Black, Jim Brown, David Wiens et Henry Holtmann, ainsi que plusieurs autres, nous ont fourni des outils utiles pour nous aider à réussir en siégeant à un conseil ou sur la ferme. Les conférenciers ont également partagé leur expérience au sujet de leurs mandats à différents conseils tout en gérant une ferme et passant du temps avec leur famille. Ils ont mis de l’importance sur les techniques de gestion du temps ainsi que de pourvoir communiquer et collaborer avec nos partenaires sur la ferme et la famille lorsque vient le temps de quitter la maison pour les réunions.

Le groupe a aussi participé à un test de personnalité (Disc) pour déterminer quel genre de personnalité nous avions comparativement à la population en général. En prenant ce test et en acceptant le genre de personnalité qui nous ressemble le plus, nous pouvions alors trouver des façons d’avoir une personnalité moins dominante pour être plus engagé dans le processus de prises de décisions importantes lors de réunions, sur la ferme et dans la famille. Cette activité s’est vraiment démarquée pour moi car ça m’a permis de voir où sont mes lacunes lorsque j’interagis avec les gens sur la ferme ou en public. Cette activité m’a fait réaliser que ce je dois améliorer comme personne et quel genre d’habiletés je devais avoir qui bénéficierait à différents types de personnes et leurs personnalités.

Ce Leaders de demain est une nécessité lorsqu’on parle de l’importance d’évoluer dans notre industrie d’une façon ou d’une autre. Il fournit les outils pratiques et les connaissances que tous ne savent probablement pas ainsi que la confiance de pouvoir assimiler ces outils. Cette information inestimable.

Mike Podschadly of Armstrong, BC is a sought-after cattle fitter and has worked for top herds in North America and Mexico, including Pacific Edge Jerseys in Tillamook, OR. He was Jersey Canada’s 2023 Youth of Distinction and has been known for mentoring young fitters and breeders while volunteering for a variety of 4-H events and dairy shows.

Is there a special kind of clipper I need to get a great fit? - MP Boer Goats

M: No there are no special clippers to have a great clip. I prefer an AESCULAP Economy II or Heiniger Handy because they have a faster stroke per minute compared to other clippers that run a bit slower. The blades you use will make the biggest difference on how nice of a clip you can get. I suggest a ground down bottom blade and a 23-tooth top blade.

How does the time of year (ie. spring, summer, fall) affect what fitters can do?

M: The different seasons can really affect the hair growth. In the spring you

can have really nice hair at one show and having it falling out by the next one, depending how fast the weather changes and when cattle go through their shedding cycle. In the summer, hair growth might be limited so make sure that you have all the hair blown up and standing as best you can and that will make it look the best. You should also be careful on how much oil you put on in the summer because it can trap heat and cause cows to get very hot and start to breath heavy. In mid to late fall you should have some of the best hair of the year so there are not many restrictions that time of year.

How does fitting for international differ from fitting for North American shows?

M: Clipping internationally is very similar to clipping in North America, the only difference that I have noticed is that in some places you are not allowed to set teats on cows.

How do you work around product legalities in different countries/areas? (ie. Clear Magic)

M: I work around using different products such as Clear Magic by making sure your topline is 95% done before you

add any different adhesive that you’re not used to. Not all adhesives are going to cut or hold the same as Clear Magic so the less you have to move the hair the better. Making sure that all the hair is properly standing before spraying adhesive is also key.

Is there a significant difference when fitting a Jersey compared to other breeds? If so, what are they?

M: The significant difference is how a Jersey changes color after clipping them very short. You never know what colour they are going show underneath the brown or potentially black hair. Not only will they usually change colour after clipping, but if you add baby oil they tend to turn a shade darker. So, if you miss any spots on your first run over and then spray oil, you can end up with light patches after running them over a second time.

I would also recommend not leaving hair in the chest on cows if the color of the hair is darker than the rest of her body. This will create the illusion of a shadow and will work against what you are trying to accomplish by leaving hair.

Est-ce que j’ai besoin d’une tondeuse spéciale pour préparer mes animaux?

- MP Boer Goats

M: Non, il n’y a pas de tondeuse spéciale pour obtenir de bons résultats. Je préfère le AESCULAP Economy II ou le Heiniger Handy parce qu’ils ont plus de coups à la minute comparativement à d’autres tondeuses qui roulent un peu plus lentement. Les lames que vous utiliserez feront une grande différence sur le résultat final de la tonte. Je suggère une lame inférieure rectifiée et une lame supérieure à 23 dents.

Comment est-ce que le temps de l’année (ex. printemps, été, automne) affecte ce que peut faire le préparateur?

M: Les différentes saisons peuvent vraiment affecter la pousse des poils. Au printemps, vous avez du très beau poil à une exposition puis il est en train de tomber à la prochaine, selon la vitesse à laquelle la température change et où en est le bétail dans son cycle de mue. Pendant l’été, la croissance du poil peut être minime donc il faut s’assurer que les poils soient séchés bien droits pour qu’ils tiennent du mieux possible pour qu’ils paraissent à leur meilleur. Vous

devez aussi faire attention à la quantité d’huile que vous utilisez pendant l’été car elle peut emmagasiner la chaleur et causer des coups de chaleur aux vaches qui commenceront à haleter. Du milieu jusqu’à la fin de l’automne, vous devriez voir le plus beau poil de l’année et il y a moins de restrictions à cette période de l’année.

Comment est-ce que la préparation à l’international diffère de celle des expositions en Amérique du Nord?

M: Tondre à l’international est très similaire que tondre en Amérique du Nord. La seule différence que j’ai remarquée est que dans certaines régions, il n’est pas permis de placer les trayons sur les vaches.

Comment contournez-vous les légalités des produits dans différents pays/ régions (ex. Clear magic)

M: Je contourne l’utilisation de différents produits comme Clear Magig en m’assurant que la ligne de dos est faite à 95 % avant d’utiliser tout adhésif différent de celui que j’ai l’habitude d’utiliser. Ce n’est pas tous les adhésifs qui tiendront aussi bien que Clear

Magic donc moins vous avez à déplacer le poil, mieux c’est. S’assurer que tous les poils tiennent bien droits avant de vaporiser l’adhésif est primordial.

Est-ce qu’il y a des différences significatives lorsqu’on prépare des Jerseys comparativement aux autres races? Si oui, quelles sont-elles?

M: La principale différence est combien la couleur de la Jersey change après une tonte très courte. Vous ne savez jamais quelle couleur elle sera sous les poils bruns et parfois noirs. Non seulement elles changent habituellement de couleur après la tonte, mais si vous ajoutez de l’huile pour bébé, elles deviennent encore plus foncées. Donc, si vous oubliez un endroit au premier tour et que vous vaporisez de l’huile, vous obtiendrez des sections plus claires lorsque vous passerez la deuxième fois.

Je recommande aussi de ne pas laisser de poils sur la poitrine des vaches si la couleur est plus foncée que le reste de son corps. Ceci créera l’illusion d’un ombrage et travaillera contre ce que vous essayez de faire en ne tondant pas cette partie.

Jersey Quebec visits California Jersey Québec visite la Californie

On November 28, 2023, members of Jersey Quebec left on a trip to California. Our trip started with San Francisco, what a beautiful city. We then had the chance to visit, either by the classic cable cars or by bus. We also went to visit Alcatraz prison, which is on an island, a very beautiful tourist site with a lot of history. We had the opportunity to walk on San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge and touch the Pacific Ocean, oh how cold it was. During this trip we learned a lot about California history. It is the most populous state in the United States, with 40 million inhabitants, more than the entire population of Canada. We visited Muir Woods National Monument, a forest with an abundance of giant trees called sequoia, measuring up to 116 meters high. We also took a trip to Sequoia National Park to see General Grant and General Sherman, two immense sequoias with a diameter of approximately 12 meters each, it was very impressive. These are trees that are more than 2,200 years old and have a height of 275 feet, or 85 meters.

After leaving San Francisco, we headed to the Napa area where there were vineyards as far as the eye could see. We were fortunate to have the chance to visit the Californian agricultural world, because it is the largest dairy producer in the United States. California is experiencing very different issues from those in Quebec. Water there is an undeniable source of wealth. The fields are irrigated to produce crops since the climate is very arid. In general, there are three crops per year in the same field: corn silage, wheat silage and rye silage. In alfalfa fields, they can produce up to 11 cuts per year. In short, the yield per acre is much higher in California than in Quebec. Another point, primary resources are so expensive that agricultural producers add a lot of value to everything

they can reuse. For example, they collect citrus peels from processing plants to feed their livestock and even collect almond shells for bedding purposes.

The first farm we visited was Clauss Dairy Farms, an operation of 5,600 lactating Jersey cows housed at three locations, located in the Turlock area of California's Central Valley. A rotary is used for milking, the employees are of Mexican origin. Heifers are raised in Texas because labour and land prices are more economical. The Clauss family farms 700 acres and purchases additional feed as-needed. They are also shareholders of Hilmar Cheese Factory.

After visiting Clauss Dairy, we went to eat at Hilmar Cheese Company, a large cheese factory that processes 1.3 million pounds of cheese every day. This cheese factory was created by Jersey producers so they could get maximum profitability from their dairies.

The second farm we visited was nearby Fire-Lake Jerseys, where the Sanders family milks 300 Jerseys and competes at local, state and national shows. They have 200 acres of land and

a double-10 milking parlour, which we were lucky enough to see in action. They own the county auction site, so they hold several auctions. They do a lot of IVF and sell a large number of animals.

The third farm was none other than Vierra Dairy Farms. This operation milks 5,000 cows, 30% Holstein and 70% Jersey, in an 80-stall rotary parlour. Vierra Dairy has worked to diversify their company. Besides being well-known in show circles, Vierra has also partnered with Semex and opened a satellite Boviteq IVF facility.

Next, we visited Boviteq California, the new site designed in partnership between Semex and Vierra. This facility offers embryo transfer and IVF technology for both dairy and beef cattle. Jonathan Merriam from Semex accompanied us on this visit as well as the next farm.

Our last visit of the day was to the Ahlem Farm Partnership. This dairy milks 6,000 registered Jerseys and is well-known for producing AI studs. It is a herd that has already bred more than 2,000 excellent cows. The milking sys -

tem is a 60-stall rotary parlour and the average production is 31.75 kgs at 4.8% fat and 3.8% protein. Their objective is to continue to breed cows with good conformation and to increase the components without harming production.

On the third day of the tour, we started with Kash-In Holsteins and Jerseys in the Tulare area. This dairy milks 6,000 cows, and aims to increase to 7,000 cows on the same site. Currently, they have two double 25-milking parlours, one opposite the other which are in continuous operation. Soon, they want to install a carousel to be more efficient. Their breeding site covers an area of 200 acres, and they have 1,800 acres cultivated, including 600 acres in almonds. Kash-In is recognized for its AI studs as well as for their success on the show grounds.

The next visit was to Jer-Z-Boyz Ranch, milking 4,500 cows housed at two sites. Milking is done with a double -35 milking parlour. Jer-Z-Boyz was the first producer in the region to have Jerseys, buying brown cows from across the US, and even travelling to Canada to pick some up. Since that time, many farms in the surrounding area have JerZ-Boyz progeny.

Our last stop was Four-J Farms & Jerseys. This dairy milks 4,300 cows on a 62-stall rotary parlour. Their herd

is divided into groups of 600 cows for milking. Milking a group only takes 1 hour 15 minutes, which is a very efficient system. 45% of their herd was in first lactation. On the reproduction side, they use 90% beef semen on their lactating cows and sexed semen on the heifers. Four-J Jerseys has a new barn measuring 900 feet long by 200 feet wide and it houses 2,000 cows in sand stalls. As for the manure management system, it is managed by cleaning the aisles with water, like most of the farms we visited. In this huge barn, a single aisle requires 40,000 gallons to wash.

Overall, we had very nice farm visits as well as nice discussions with the owners and farm managers. I would also like to thank Pierre-Olivier Lehoux for translating during farm visits. We saw many different systems, but observed that everywhere, profitability was the number one concern. In California, nothing is left to chance. Producers are very good managers; their resources are used wisely and farm owners in California require diverse incomes. Breeding is a big chunk of production costs, and everyone has a different strategy. An example of this is that most had solar panels to provide part of their electricity.

sionnant. Ce sont des arbres qui ont plus de 2 200 ans et qui ont une hauteur de 275 pieds, soit 85 mètres.

Après notre départ de San Francisco, nous nous sommes dirigés vers la région de Napa. Nous avons pu observer des vignobles à perte de vue. Il faut dire que nous avons été choyés d’avoir la chance de visiter le monde agricole californien, car il s’agit du plus gros producteur laitier des États-Unis. Tout d’abord, la Californie vit des enjeux très différents de ceux du Québec. Là-bas, l’eau est une richesse incontestable. Les champs sont irrigués pour produire les récoltes étant donné que le climat est très aride. En général, il y a 3 cultures par année dans un même champ, soit de l’ensilage de maïs, de l’ensilage de blé et de l’ensilage de seigle. Dans les champs de luzerne, ils peuvent produire jusqu’à 11 coupes par année. Bref, le rendement à l’acre est beaucoup plus élevé en Californie qu’au Québec. Autre point, les ressources primaires sont tellement dispendieuses que les producteurs agricoles valorisent beaucoup tout ce qu’ils peuvent réutiliser. Par exemple, ils récupèrent les pelures d’agrumes provenant d’usines de transformation pour alimenter leur bétail et récupèrent même les coquilles d’amandes à des fins de litière.

Maintenant, parlons un peu plus de nos visites de fermes. Nous étions dans la région de Turlock. La première ferme que

nous avons visité est Clauss Dairy Farms, une entreprise de 5 600 vaches jersey en lactation logées 3 sites. Un carrousel est utilisé pour la traite, les employés sont d’origine mexicaine. L’élevage des génisses se fait au Texas, car la main d’œuvre et le prix des terres sont plus rentables. Ils ont 700 acres de terres et achètent de la nourriture pour combler les besoins. Ils sont actionnaires de Hilmar Cheese Factory.

Après la visite de Clauss Dairy, nous sommes justement allés manger à Hilmar Cheese Compagny, une fromagerie d’envergure qui transforme chaque jour 1,3 millions de livres de fromage. Cette fromagerie a été créée par les producteurs Jersey afin que ces derniers puissent tirer le maximum de profitabilité de leur production laitière.

La deuxième ferme que nous avons visité est Fire-Lake, une entreprise de 300 vaches jersey en lactation. C’est un troupeau plus commercial avec lequel ils participent aux expositions. La production de lait est un peu moins élevée. Ils ont 200 acres de terres. Ils ont une salle de traite, un double 10, dont nous avons eu la chance de participer. Ils sont propriétaires du site d’encan du comté, alors ils organisent plusieurs encans. Ils font beaucoup de conception In Vitro et commercialisent énormément d’animaux.

La troisième ferme est nul autre que Vierra Dairy Farms. Une entreprise de

5 000 vaches en lactation dont 30% sont Holstein et 70% Jersey. Pour la traite, ils ont un carrousel de 80 places. Vierra est très connu dans les terrains d’expositions. Ils sont partenaires avec Semex et Boviteq California. Ils sont propriétaires d’une compagnie d’alimentation qui alimente 80% des vaches de la Californie. Ils ont 1 500 acres en cultures. Ils font également énormément de conception In Vitro avec leurs meilleurs sujets. Tous les animaux sont élevés sur leur site.

Par la suite, nous avons visité Boviteq California, un nouveau site qui a été conçu en partenariat avec Semex et Vierra. C’est un site pour faire des récoltes In Vitro. Les meilleurs sujets s’y retrouvent pour la récolte de semences, que ce soit des animaux élevés en JPI ou TPI, des animaux d’expositions, ou même des vaches à bœuf, angus, wagyu etc. La visite de Vierra et Boviteq fut accompagné par Jonathan Merriam de Semex. Il nous a accompagné aussi à la visite de la ferme décrite ci-bas.

Notre cinquième visite fût la ferme Ahlem Partnership, une entreprise possédant 6 000 vaches en lactation logées sur 2 sites. Ahlem est très connu pour tous les taureaux qui sont dans les centres d’insémination. C’est un troupeau qui a déjà élevé plus de 2000 vaches excellentes. Le système de traite est un carrousel de 60 places. La production moyenne est de 31,75 kgs à 4,8% de gras et 3,8% de protéine. Leur objectif est de continuer d’élever des vaches avec une bonne conformation et d’augmenter les composantes sans nuire à la production.

Au troisième jour de visite, nous avons commencé avec Kash-In Holsteins et Jerseys dans la région de Tulare. Il s’agit d’une entreprise de 6 000 vaches en lactation qui a comme objectif d’augmenter à 7000 vaches sur le même site. Actuellement, ils ont deux salles de traites double 25, un vis-à-vis l’autre qui sont en fonction continuellement. Dans un avenir rapproché, ils veulent installer un carrousel pour être plus efficace. Leur site d’élevage se retrouve sur une superficie de 200 acres. Ils ont 1800 acres en culture,

dont 600 acres en amandes. Kash- In est reconnu pour ses taureaux au centre d’insémination ainsi que pour leur succès sur les terrains d’expositions.

La visite suivante fut à la Jer-ZBoyz Ranch, une entreprise de 4 500 vaches en lactation logées sur 2 sites. La traite se fait avec une salle de traite double 35. Jer-Z-Boyz est le premier producteur de la région à avoir des Jerseys. Il faisait le tour des États-Unis et il achetait tout ce qui était brun. Il est venu même au Canada pour venir en chercher. Depuis ce temps, beaucoup de fermes dans les alentours qui possèdent des descendances de JerZ-Boyz. Ils fournissent des taureaux aux centres d’inséminations. Ils ont un taureau parmi l’élite en JPI. Ils ont 600 acres en cultures.

Notre dernière visite s’est arrêtée chez Four-J Farms & Jerseys. Il s’agit d’une entreprise de 4 300 vaches en lactation et la traite se faisait avec un carrousel de 62 places. Leur troupeau

est divisé en groupes de 600 vaches pour la traite. D’ailleurs, la traite d’un groupe prend seulement 1h15, ce qui est très efficace comme système. 45% de leur troupeau était en première lactation. Côté reproduction, il utilise 90% de semences à bœuf sur leurs vaches en lactation et de la semence sexée sur les génisses. Four-J possède une nouvelle étable de 900 pieds de long par 200 pieds de large. Elle héberge 2 000 vaches. Pour ce qui est du système de gestion du fumier, celui-ci est géré par un nettoyage des allées à l’eau, comme la plupart des fermes que nous avons visitées. Dans cette étable immense, une seule allée nécessite 40 000 gallons pour effectuer son lavage, ce qui est assez impressionnant. Aussi, les vaches sont logées sur logettes de sable dans cette entreprise.

Finalement, nous avons eu de très belles visites de fermes, de très belles discussions avec les propriétaires et les gérants de ferme. J’aimerais aussi

remercier Pierre-Olivier Lehoux pour la traduction lors des visites de fermes. Nous avons vu différents systèmes, mais on peut retenir que partout, la rentabilité est l’enjeu numéro 1. Ils ont des défis qui ne sont pas nécessairement les mêmes que nous, surtout que le climat n’est pas le même. En Californie, rien n’est laissé au hasard. Les producteurs sont de très bons gestionnaires et leurs ressources sont utilisées de manière raisonnée. Les propriétaires des fermes en Californie ont des revenus diversifiés. L’élevage est un gros morceau des coûts de production et chacun a une stratégie différente. La plupart avait des panneaux solaires pour fournir une partie de leur électricité. Bref, nous en sommes tous sorti grandi. Ce fut vraiment un beau voyage. tions. Heidi also works part time for the Canadian Wool Growers Association as the provincial secretary for Quebec. She is a very active person with a great interest in sports. She has belonged to a women's softball team, floor hockey league and currently plays pickle ball multiple nights a week. Heidi is also involved in the local church where she is part of the congregation’s women's group. She loves to travel to new places and enjoys being a grandmother to her two young grandsons.

Casey, along with most farm women, could be described as a ‘Super-Woman’. She is adaptive, flexible, creative, has unapparelled work ethic and is loyal and committed to the well-being of the land, animal welfare, family, and community. She has represented the industry around the world and now manages many aspects on the family farm, Unique Valleystream Genetics, from animal health to finance and crops as well as being a partial owner. She had an integral part in the expansion and build of the farm's new dairy barn, both in planning and the actual build as a lot of the interior work was done by herself and the rest of her family. In February 2024, Casey was awarded the 2023 Modern Farm Woman of the Year award at the Annual Farm Woman’s Conference in Alberta.

On peut décrire Casey, comme plusieurs femmes en agriculture, comme une ‘Super-Femme’. Elle s’adapte, est flexible, créative, possède une éthique de travail incomparable et est loyale et engagée au bien-être de la terre, du bien-être animal, de la famille et de la communauté. Elle a représenté l’industrie partout dans le monde et gère maintenant plusieurs aspects de la ferme familiale, Unique Valleystream Genetics : de la santé animale, aux finances en passant par les cultures, tout en étant copropriétaire. Elle a joué un rôle important dans l’expansion et la construction de la nouvelle étable laitière, tant pour les plans que de la construction car elle a accompli elle-même beaucoup du travail intérieur avec l’aide du reste de la famille. En février 2024 Casey a reçu le titre de Femme moderne

en plus de prendre part aux activités quotidiennes. Elle travaille également à temps partiel pour l’association canadienne des producteurs de laine (Canadian Wool Growers Association) et agit comme secrétaire provinciale pour le Québec. Elle est une personne très active et est très intéressée par les sports. Elle fait partie d’une ligue de balle molle féminine, de hockey en salle et joue aussi au pickle ball plusieurs soirs par semaine. Heidi est aussi engagée auprès de l’église locale où elle fait partie du groupe de femmes de sa congrégation. Elle aime voyager vers de nouveaux endroits et adore être la grand-mère de deux jeunes petits-fils.

Jaime is not only the go-to person for advice on sick cows and always up for a discussion about agriculture, but she also works part-time at the Atlantic veterinary college and is a mother to three young children. If she is not in the barn milking cows, she is driving her kids to hockey and other various activities. Jaime is a great mentor and a strong woman in agriculture and within the Jersey family. Jaime deserves to be recognized for her hard work and dedication to the Jersey breed, as well as being a stand-up person within the agriculture industry.

Si elle n’est pas à l’étable à faire la traite, elle conduit les enfants au hockey ou à toute autre activité. Jaime mérite d’être reconnue pour son travail acharné et son dévouement envers la race Jersey et aussi parce qu’elle est une personne intègre dans l’industrie agricole.

Heather obtained her BSc. Ag at the University of Guelph. Heather is now the Customer Service Plant 1 Supervisor at Trouw Nutrition, as well as being an active partner in Athlone Farms/Braeview Jerseys. While at the University of Guelph she was Chair of the Student Federation of Agriculture and currently is a member of the Sprucedale Public School Council. As well she has more than 15 years of experience leading 4-H programs in both Alberta and Ontario. She has chaired various committees for Jersey Ontario and is an active member on the board of directors.

This is the result of five years of hard work that included training and education around regulations, sourcing equipment and buying cows over long-distances in the often-unforgiving environment of Northern Canada. Through it all, Kriste retains her positive pioneering spirit and is a wonderful ambassador for hard-working women in Canadian dairy.

Dial ‘0’ for Phyllis! Always a friendly voice, Phyllis Harrington is more than Jersey Canada’s office administrator, she is the glue that has held Jersey Canada together for over 20 years. She has welcomed hundreds of new members to Jersey Canada, reminding some she held them as sleeping babies during annual meetings, and has dedicated the latter-half of her professional life to helping these members prosper by providing reliable service offered with an easy laugh. Rest assured, if you know Phyllis’ name, she remembers yours, and your children’s and grandchildren’s too!

Sustainable practices by producers and processors, trade policies and market outlooks top issues for 2024 policy conference

Building a robust and modern Canadian dairy industry for the future was the theme of Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC)’s recent 2024 Annual Dairy Policy Conference (APC) in Ottawa. The two-day event, which was held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier on February 7-8, featured engaged delegates and insightful speakers on topics ranging from sustainable farming practices and the need for enhanced data collection, to domestic and global market outlooks and trade policies.

DFC President David Wiens kicked off the conference with a rallying call to address the pressing issues of the day - including the changing climate and high production costs - while also looking ahead to build and shape the future of our dairy industry.

Wiens stressed that the focus must be on market growth, ensuring current and future trade agreements don’t become “one-way streets into our markets.” The upcoming presidential election in the United States will be important for Canada’s dairy sector, said Wiens: “We must be ready to defend our industry, and with your active engagement, Dairy Farmers of Canada will continue this work.”

Key speaker highlights

Outlining Canada’s trade opportunities and challenges in a fireside chat with DFC CEO Jacques Lefebvre, Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, stressed that, in reference to the UK trade negotiations with Canada, “We’re not giving up access to cheese.” Stefanie Beck, Deputy Minister, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, weighed in on farmgate milk pricing, supply management and other issues. Maxime Collette, DFC’s senior analyst of market intelligence, looked at how Canada’s rising population will drive an increase in food demand. Christophe Lafougère, CEO of GIRA, a consulting and research company that specializes in world agri-food issues, said Canada is well-positioned to take advantage of a time of slowing global milk production.

Other special guests included: Rory Christie, a partner with Dourie Farming Company Ltd. and vice chair of the Scottish Agricultural Organisations Society; Hélène Morissette, vice-president of corporate responsibility for Saputo Inc.; Daniel Foy, co-founder and CEO of AgriGates, a U.S.-based agri-tech company focused on the integration and aggregation of farm-level data; and Cristine Laforest, general manager and CEO of Groupe Bel Canada, who shared how adding DFC’s Blue Cow label has substantially increased Groupe Bel Canada’s sales by 29 per cent.

Dairy Farmers on the Hill

On February 6, dairy farmers from across Canada gathered in Ottawa to meet with Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, and government officials to discuss critical issues facing the Canadian dairy sector. Despite a significant snowstorm shutting down flights from parts of the Maritimes, dairy farmers met with more than 100 parliamentarians and officials and spoke about the importance of ensuring that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) protects and enforces Canada’s dairy terminology, asked for the review and modernization of Business Risk Management programs, and highlighted the importance that Canada pursues the elimination of the surcharge on dairy exports during the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

As per usual, DFC ended its lobby day with a well-attended reception for Parliamentarians. DFC would like to extend our thanks to everyone who took time away from their farms to educate politicians about challenges farmers face from coast to coast.

Navigating carbon markets: a toolkit for farmers

Did you know that while best management practices for the mitigation of on-farm emissions help reduce, capture or lower carbon, they can also create carbon credits that could become a new source of revenue for your farm? That’s where carbon markets come in.

DFC has created a new toolkit, Navigating Carbon Markets, that introduces farmers to carbon markets, providing a high-level overview of what they entail and how farmers can participate in them. We are also developing further resources that will offer guidance on how to sell carbon credits, how to understand and handle risks, and a list of frequently asked questions that farmers may have.

Principaux sujets abordés lors de la Conférence annuelle sur la politique laitière de 2024 : les pratiques durables des producteurs et des transformateurs, les politiques commerciales et les perspectives de marché

Construire une industrie laitière canadienne durable et moderne pour l’avenir, tel était le thème de la Conférence annuelle sur la politique laitière de 2024 des Producteurs laitiers du Canada (PLC) qui s’est tenue récemment à Ottawa.

L’événement de deux jours, qui s’est déroulé au Fairmont Château Laurier les 7 et 8 février, a permis de réunir des délégués engagés et de présenter des conférenciers chevronnés qui ont traité de sujets allant des pratiques agricoles durables et de la nécessité d’améliorer la collecte de données, aux perspectives des marchés nationaux et mondiaux et aux politiques commerciales.

Le président des PLC, David Wiens, a donné le coup d’envoi de la Conférence en lançant un appel à la mobilisation pour répondre aux questions urgentes du moment - notamment les changements climatiques et les coûts de production élevés - tout en se tournant vers l’avenir pour construire et façonner le futur de notre industrie laitière.

M Wiens a souligné qu’il fallait se concentrer sur la croissance du marché, en veillant à ce que les accords commerciaux actuels et futurs ne deviennent pas « des voies à sens unique vers nos marchés ». Les prochaines élections présidentielles aux États-Unis seront importantes pour le secteur laitier canadien, a affirmé M. Wiens : « Nous devons être prêts à défendre notre industrie et, grâce à votre implication active, les Producteurs laitiers du Canada seront en mesure de poursuivre ce travail ».

Les producteurs laitiers sur la colline

Le 6 février, des producteurs laitiers de tout le Canada se sont réunis à Ottawa pour rencontrer des ministres, des députés, des sénateurs et des représentants du gouvernement afin de discuter des questions cruciales auxquelles est confronté le secteur laitier canadien. Rearing costs estimates, can we make sense of it?

The net replacement cost for a Jersey cow was estimated at $3700 for 2023. How do we get to that number, what does it include, and is it relevant to your decisions?

Our rearing costs are established based on the financial data coming from 440 dairy farms that are part of management groups. Holstein being the predominant breed among those farms, the costs estimates are further adjusted for the weight and production of Jersey cows.

First, let’s go through some of the key costs included in that estimate (Table 1). Feed costs are estimated at $1,784 to raise a heifer to 24 months. Most of it is forage (≈65%), the rest being milk and concentrates. This value is further supported by a recent Lactanet study of 93 farms where feed costs and weight gains for various age groups were monitored. Other variable costs would include health expenses, bedding, registration, and calf value. In total, we estimated a total variable cost of almost $2700 for a 24-month heifer.

While variable costs, by definition, are the costs associated with the addition of a heifer to the herd, fixed costs are those that remain unaffected by the number of heifers in the herd. Our estimated fixed costs include the depreciation and maintenance of buildings and equipment (≈45%), interests on loans and equity, and labour (hired and operator’s labour). Our recent Lactanet study also investigated labour costs and the results suggest that the $369/heifer presented in Table 1 might underestimate the real labour costs. They found a lot of variability between farms, but the average was 24 hours/heifer. That is 1 hour per month, or roughly 2 minutes a day per replacement animal, which confirms our previous studies of labour efficiency on dairy farms. We would expect labour efficiency to vary with herd size and barn layouts, but at $369/ heifer we are basically valuing work at $15/ hr, which is a conservative estimate.

The final rearing cost estimate adds up to $4341 (for 24 months) to which we deduct the value of cull cows, adjusted for

mortality rate, to come up to a net replacement cost of $3700/heifer.

WHICH COST ESTIMATE IS RELEVANT TO YOUR SITUATION?

The estimate of $3700 includes all costs, fixed and variable. It is the relevant cost to evaluate the cost of heifers in the long run and industry wide. That is, when we want to estimate the value of all resources needed to raise a heifer.

However, for some farm decisions an estimate based on variable costs maybe more relevant. For example, when a producer is wondering about keeping an extra calf or not for the current year. It is true that for most people, the facilities already exist, and you could argue that an extra calf or heifer will not add up much in terms of labour costs or equipment wear and tear (you already must feed and clean anyways, right?). In those cases, fixed costs related to facilities and, to some extent, labour

and equipment, could be overlooked. That would be the correct way to do it when taking marginal or short-term decisions.

But making a habit of putting a near zero value on fixed cost can become risky, as is could results in undervaluing your work and products. And the fact that the facilities already exist doesn’t necessarily mean it can only be used for calves and heifers. When looking at your pens of heifers, the right question to ask might be whether that space could be used for something else (e.g. dry cows, calving pens, anything else?). If the answer is yes, then even for short-term decisions those calves and heifers cannot be given a pass on rent for they are taking up space that could be used profitability by other tenants. As a good landlord, if they can’t pay full rent, you might want to look for new tenants. If the answer is no, i.e there is nothing else to be done with that space, then you might be stuck with tenants that cannot pay full rent. But if they at least cover the bills (feed, vet, etc.), you are better off keeping them and maybe even keeping more of them. But if they can only cover variable costs, you should be wary of making any kind of investment in those facilities, and surely, you’re not about to build them a brandnew barn, are you?

In conclusion, in the short-run or at the margin (i.e. when considering raising or selling a few more heifers or not), fixed costs should be overlooked. But don’t forget about the opportunity costs of those square feet and of your time. However, in the long-run fixed cost must be accounted for. If we are to have a sustainable industry, someone somewhere will have to build new heifer facilities and take care of them.

Par exemple, lorsqu’un producteur se demande s’il doit garder un veau de plus ou non pour l’année en cours. Il est vrai que pour la plupart des gens, les installations sont existantes et vous pouvez faire remarquer que de garder un veau ou une génisse de plus n’ajoutera pas vraiment de coûts de main-d’œuvre ou d’usure de l’équipement (vous devez quand même distribuer les aliments et nettoyer de toutes façon, non?). Dans ces cas-là, les coûts fixes reliés aux installations et, dans une certaine mesure, à la main-d’œuvre et à l’équipement, peuvent être oubliés. Ce serait la meilleure façon de faire lorsqu’on prend des décisions marginales ou à court-terme. Mais de prendre l’habitude de placer une valeur presqu’à zéro pour un coût fixe peut

devenir risquée car il pourrait en résulter une sous-évaluation de votre travail et de vos produits. Le fait que vos installations soient déjà là ne signifie pas nécessairement qu’elles ne peuvent être utilisées que pour des veaux et des génisses. Lorsque vous regardez vos enclos de génisses, la bonne question à se poser est si l’espace pouvait être utilisé autrement (ex. vaches taries, parcs de vêlage, autre chose?). Si la réponse est oui, alors même pour les décisions à court-terme pour ces veaux et génisses ne peuvent être ignorées car l’espace qu’ils occupent pourrait être utilisé plus efficacement. En bon propriétaire, si ces animaux ne sont pas rentables pour l’espace qu’ils utilisent, vous devez peutêtre penser à les remplacer par d’autres locataires. Si la réponse est non (ex. il n’y a rien d’autre à faire de cet espace) alors vous êtes pris avec des locataires qui ne peuvent pas payer leur loyer complètement. Mais s’ils couvrent au moins les frais (aliments, vétérinaire, etc.) vous êtes mieux de les garder et peut-être en garder plus. Mais s’ils ne couvrent que les frais variables, vous devez vous abstenir de tout investissement dans des installations et sûrement, vous ne devriez pas leur construire une toute nouvelle étable, non?

En terminant, à court-terme ou presque (ex. lorsque vous considérez élever ou vendre quelques génisses ou non) les coûts fixes ne doivent pas être mis de côté. N’oubliez pas le coût des opportunités de ces pieds carrés et de votre temps. Cependant, à long-terme, les coûts fixes doivent être considérés. Si nous voulons une industrie viable, quelqu’un quelque part devra construire une nouvelle installation pour les génisses et en prendre soin.

Leveling the Playing Field on SNF Développement de conditions équitables pour les SNG

In January 2020, the P5 provinces introduced a solids non-fat to butterfat (SNF/BF) ratio payment system with a maximum 2.30 no-pay cap. That evolved in 2021 to a 3-tier system: tier 1 being within quota, tier 2 being market ratio and tier 3 being a maximum no-pay cap. This policy was intended to manage structural surpluses and better meet market demands while giving producers sufficient time to adjust their SNF production. In August 2022, the no-pay cap was reduced to 2.25, and in February 2023, it was further reduced to 2.20. In August 2023, tier 2 prices for SNF were reduced, protein by 30% and lactose and other solids at 70% of $0.90/kg, or $0.63/kg, to address costs associated with managing SNF surpluses, and better reflect the market value of SNF. The P5 quota committee reviews policies around SNF regularly and makes recommendations to provincial boards when deemed necessary.

WHAT HAS THIS MEANT FOR JERSEY MILK PRODUCERS?

Producers shipping Jersey milk are no longer sharing costs related to the structural surplus. With the current system now in place, those producing

that surplus get no pay for SNF/BF ratios over 2.20 and get paid a reduced amount for ratios greater than 2.00.

In fact, the August 1st, 2023, pricing adjustment that shifted payments from tier 2 to tier 1 was essentially a milk price increase for Jersey producers. This change amounted to $0.36 more per kg of fat, or approximately 2 cents per liter for any herd below the 2.0 SNF ratio (based on national milk-recording data for 2022, Jerseys produce an average SNF/BF ratio of 1.90). Table 1 shows most of the price increase was in tier 1 and an actual price decrease occurred in tier 3.

Table 2 shows the playing field is fair on pricing when you compare the milk cheques of the average Holstein herd in Canada (using 2022 official stats Canada data) to the average Jersey herd. Based on 100 kg of quota, using the average prices for 2023 in the P5 provinces, we show that the gross annual incomes between the two herds are fairly close ($813,033 vs. $814,305).

However, when factoring in deductions (transport, admin, etc.) based on liters shipped, the net revenues have a wider spread in favour of the Jerseys ($772,202 vs $762,193) This is close to the $1,092 net difference per month favoring Jerseys as presented in the Sep-

tember 2023 Jersey Breeder article by Agtrek Nutrition.

This chart also looks at where the maximum income (net and gross) could be realized. When blending two breeds together (using breed component averages), the peak income occurs at 65% Jersey / 35% Holstein.

When you combine the high fat, higher protein Jersey milk with Holstein milk, you lower the SNF ratio and shift more protein from tier 2 into the higher price tier 1 category. The numbers are calculated using component percentages (not adjusted for kg / hl), and do not use true protein, but the trends are there. Every herd starts with different components, so do the math using your provincial milk board quota calculators!

CONCLUSIONS:

• The P5 SNF policy is fair to both breeds, when considering that breed average components come out to similar gross incomes. The net incomes favour the Jersey breed because deductions is based on volume and transportation costs make up 62% of that.

• There is a case for Holstein producers to consider adding Jerseys to their operation, especially if they are struggling with a ratio > 2.20. The data shows that 68 Holsteins filling 100 kg of fat would only have to increase to 77 cows consisting of 53 Jerseys and 24 Holsteins to fill the same quota and receive the highest $/kg payment.

• Jersey producers can increase revenue as well, depending on their SNF ratio, by feeding and breeding for a higher SNF ratio.

• As fat demand continues to grow, so will structural surplus, and twice as fast. Adding more Jerseys is part of the solution!

The following chart is based off of 100 kg of quota and the 2023 average payments and deductions in Ontario. Le tableau suivant est basé sur 100 kg de quota et sur les paiements et déductions moyens de 2023 en Ontario.

En janvier 2020, les provinces P5 ont dévoilé un système de paiement des ratios solides non-gras au gras (SNG/G) avec un cap de non-paiement maximal de 2,30. Ceci a changé en 2021 pour un système à trois paliers : Palier 1 (tier 1) étant en dedans du quota, palier 2 étant le ratio du marché et le palier 3 étant un cap maximal de non-paiement. Cette politique visait la gérance des surplus structurels et une meilleure rencontre des demandes du marché tout en donnant aux producteurs suffisamment de temps pour ajuster leur production de SNG. En août 2022, le cap de non-paiement a été réduit à 2,25 et en février 2023 il fut de nouveau réduit à 2,20. En août 2023, les prix du palier 2 pour les SNG furent réduits de 30 % pour diminuer les coûts associés avec la gestion des surplus de SNG et mieux

refléter la valeur du marché des SNG. Le comité du quota P5 révise les politiques reliées aux SNG régulièrement et fait des recommandations aux agences provinciales lorsqu’il le juge nécessaire.

QU’EST-CE QUE CECI SIGNIFIE POUR LES PRODUCTEURS DE LAIT DE JERSEYS?

Les producteurs qui vendent du lait de Jerseys ne partagent désormais plus les coûts des surplus structurels. Avec le système courant maintenant en place, ceux qui produisent le surplus sont non payés pour les ratios SNG/G au-dessus de 2,20 et reçoivent moins pour les ratios au-dessus de 2,00.

En fait, l’ajustement de prix du 1e août 2023 qui a déplacé les paiements du palier 2 vers le palier 1 a essentiellement été une augmentation de prix pour les producteurs Jerseys. Ce changement

• La politique SNG du P5 est équitable pour les deux races lorsqu’on considère que les composantes moyennes des races obtiennent un revenu brut semblable. Le revenu net favorise la race Jersey parce que les déductions sont basées sur le volume et les coûts de transport comptent pour 62 % de ces frais.

• Il est avantageux pour les producteurs d’Holsteins de considérer ajouter des Jerseys à leur entreprise, spécialement s’ils peinent à obtenir un ratio > 2.20. Les données démontrent qu’un troupeau de 68 Holsteins remplissant 100 kg de gras pourrait être augmenté à 77 vaches soit 53 Jerseys et 24 Holsteins pour remplir le même quota et recevez le paiement le plus élevé en $/kg.

Remembering Murray Mellow

En souvenir Murray Mellow

Murray passed away with congestive heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease on August 15, 2023.

Survived by wife Pat and daughter Karen, son Kent, deceased June 3, 2022, grandson Kevin, step daughter Angela (Jeff) Kory, and granddaughter Katrina (Alex) and great granddaughter Tegan.

Murray operated Kenkare Jerseys for over 25 years before having to sell for health reasons. He established Mellow Insurance in 1987 and along with daughter Karen had a very successful business specializing in farm and mill insurance. He eventually sold the business and retired but continued being involved with the Jersey breed.

Murray was very active in the local Rotary Club, curling, and farm organizations and was a very familiar face at local fairs as judge and sponsor of special cattle classes. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Murray a géré Kenkare Jerseys pendant 25 ans avant de vendre pour cause de maladie. Il a mis sur pieds Mellow Insurance en 1987 et, avec sa fille Karen, a géré une entreprise prospère se spécialisant dans l’assurance de fermes et de moulins. Il a vendu l’entreprise et a pris sa retraite mais a continué d’être actif auprès de la race Jersey.

Murray était très actif au sein du club Rotary local, au curling et dans les organismes agricoles. Figure familière aux foires locales en tant que juge et commanditaire de classes spéciales de bétail, il manquera à tous ceux qui l’ont connu.

Huntcliff Dairy Ltd is located near Olds, central Alberta with a nice view of the Rocky Mountains. They currently milk approximately 100 purebred Jersey cows. The cows are milked with two Lely A4 robots and housed in a freestall barn. The dry cows and pregnant heifers live in a pack barn and the calves are housed inside until six months of age and then they go in corrals outside. The Huyzers bought their first Jersey cow in 2004. She did really well among all Holstein cows. Over the years more Jersey cows were bought local and from the East. In 2019 they purchased the Jersey herd from Lakeland College in Vermillion and a third of the herd was still Holstein. When their daughter came back to the farm and was interested in maybe taking over, the decision was made to no longer breed the Holsteins with Holstein bulls but only use beef on them instead. Over time the Holsteins were sold and in 2022 the last black and white one left the farm.

Now Huntcliff Dairy is only milking Jersey cows.

Where initially the choice for Jerseys was partially a practical one, smaller cows being easier to breed for a shorter person, the economics of milking Jersey cows had always played a big role in making the total switch. Many outsiders believe that there are 3 factors that make Jerseys less attractive: stall size, bull calves and increased occurrence of milk fever. Those were all addressed. The stalls were on the tight side for the Holstein cows but large enough to house the Jersey cows. Jersey bull calves are a less desirable side effect that got addressed with using sexed semen on the top-end of the herd and the remaining bred to beef. And lastly milk fever: when your dry cow management is top notch there are not many cases of milk fever to treat. Low potassium hay is really critical in the dry cow ration and helps the cow transition really well into the next lactation. Another important part on the

cost side is that transportation of milk is all based on volume transported. With component-rich Jersey milk, the cost savings are significant over a full year.

The breeding strategy at Huntcliff Dairy is 40 % sexed semen from the best bulls in the world and the other 60% is bred with Speckle Park semen. The focus with bull choices is on udders, feet and legs and on rump structure. The beef calves are sold to the backyard market and a cute calf sells way better than an average looking calf.

Going forward,the Huyzers feel thatJersey breeders should emphasize the high feed efficiency and the environmental advantages of the breed. Jersey farmers sell a concentrated product (milk with more solids and less water per liter) which costs less in energy (cooling, faster milking) and less in transportation. For that reason, we contribute in a good way to decrease the emissions and create a more sustainable dairy industry.
