Leg Swelling - Is it Lymphedema?

Page 1

Leg swelling: Is it lymphedema? What is lymphedema? Lymphedema (lim-fa-DEE-ma): chronic swelling (edema) caused by a buildup of fluid (lymph).

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal within the body. However, excess weight can disrupt this delicate equilibrium, leading to a higher risk of developing lymphedema among individuals with obesity. The Canadian Lymphedema Framework wishes to empower individuals living with obesity and their health care teams with resources and knowledge about this potential health risk, which is under-recognized, under-diagnosed, and under-treated in Canada. Impaired lymphatic function can lead to chronic swelling and skin changes that can be physically disfiguring, and put affected individuals at an increased risk of developing chronic, non-healing wounds and potentially life-threatening infections such as cellulitis.
