POP Kollaborative and Decor & More Inc., Calgary, AB “SOCIETY” The Wedding of Ken Kristoffersen CSEP and Valter Maciel In a creative twist to space design, the affair took place in a glass walled foyer outside one of the Telus Convention Centre’s main ballrooms. The room itself is long and slender and in order to create seamless flow, food stations, bars and luxe seating pods were dotted from the entry way to the back of the room. The couple’s signature VK logo, was integrated into everything from the wedding invitation to the entrance, where it was etched into a collection of mirrors, glowing candles and glass frames. Rather than the traditional sit down dinner, guests were assigned elaborately designed enviroscapes and encouraged to mingle. Rich tones of silvers, greens and creams, glass and light, were showcased in enchanting collections of intimate seating areas. The only thing more luxe than the décor was the food. All items were designed as small plates, with tasting stations, passed canapes & active stations where delicacies were prepared upon request

It took place during the production of a Canadian Tire commercial, “The Hockey Practice”, that launched January 1, 2014 during the Winter Classic hockey game. During a span of twenty one days, the Iceculture project resulted in a new World Record.

interview Professor joe jeff goldblatt

by

Rebecca Cotter (Instructor) and Jenny Jeong (Student) Humber College North , School of Hospitality Recreation & Tourism, Event Planning Diploma Program, Toronto, ON

The ISES Toronto Chapter recently welcomed industry and event education pioneer Professor Joe Jeff Goldblatt to Toronto for an evening of collaborative networking, education and professional development. While in town, Goldblatt set aside time to sit down with members of Humber College’s Event Planning program and Canadian Special Events magazine scooped the exclusive on the interview with one of the industry’s most esteemed professionals. HC: What do you feel are the most important technology skills that event planners should have?

JJG: Emerging event professionals need to learn how to use the right technology to create connections and build relationships within their events. There are many different apps and software programs available, such as: MeetingMatrix and MeetingMetrics being examples of some that are really revolutionizing what technology can do for events. By learning how to design events using technology, you can leverage the purpose, meaning and opportunities provided by the events you plan.

HC: Event planners know that it is important to plan sustainable events in today’s event industry, but how do you motivate clients to go ‘Green’?

JJG: It is a case of supply and demand. As the population increases, the demand for higher quality products and services will increase. This demand will stem from a variety of influencing factors: education, regulation, industry and government policies, to name a few. As more clients request environmentally friendly products, services or Green event platforms, planners will be required to respond to these needs. Educating clients on the options available and how they benefit them, helps to develop a sense of community with your clients.

HC: How can event students secure their success in the special event industry? 16 | canadianspecialevents.com Magazine | SPRING 2014

JJG: I believe that the following four steps are very important for anyone, especially students, looking to become successful in the special event industry.

Networking – Being an active networker allows students to connect and interact with colleagues from different areas of the industry. They can discover and join great mentorships programs, like the one offered by ISES Toronto, and receive valuable guidance.

Gain Experience – Get involved with local events and gain hands-on experience. You will learn faster and compliment the knowledge gain in the classroom. Join a committee with your local ISES Chapter, check community special event and festival calendar listings, local volunteering sites, event company or industry websites for volunteer and internship postings. If you discover a company that interests you, offer to intern for experience and networking opportunities.

Stand Out – It is important to differentiate yourself and be an individual. In order to be successful and thrive in this competitive industry, students should identify their own strengths and leverage their abilities. Get involved, take on professional development opportunities, read leading industry publications such as the Canadian Special Events magazine, and be “hungry for learning”. Companies want to know what you bring to the table and how you can benefit their needs. Enthusiasm is not enough. What sets you apart from the pack?

Persistence & Tenacity – Working in the event industry is hard but rewarding and exciting work. Never give up! Recognize that sometimes you will make the wrong decision and at times you might feel like you have failed. But these are the situations that teach you important skills like judgement. Learn how to turn every difficult situation into a learning opportunity and walk away from challenges knowing that they have made you a better planner.

top tech

trends influencing the industry today

Event technology is a buzz word. Its everywhere, it’s what everyone is talking about and it is here to stay. Every day new products, ideas, apps, and systems are developed and its changing the way we plan, strategize and market our events. Everyone has something to say about it. Experts are popping up everywhere and suddenly every event blogger is a pro in the know. There is a lot more to event technology than app building, social media and crowd sourcing. The tech is changing rapidly and soon, your trusty paper and pen, although tried and true may not be enough. Why? Simply put, because you wont be able to communicate with your clients and suppliers in the same language they speak. You need to know how to talk tech and what it means to your company and your event; to plug in and train yourself on the impossibly vast world of paperless planning. Let us get you started with the top apps you need to know and the top predictions for the event technology industry.

Organizers will seek integrated solutions As technology becomes more prominent within the event industry, customers will have higher expectations of the services that their suppliers provide, and seek integrated solutions for registration, online mapping, mobile apps and audience response. Event Wi-Fi will turn a corner - Venues will begin to see fit-for-purpose

Top Apps Every Planner Needs to Have

Wi-Fi as a competitive edge, and those that can guarantee it for large events will see a great increase in business. Exhibition organizers will begin to see that exhibitors will only attend shows that can cater for their needs, and connectivity will be a crucial deciding factor for planners choosing event venues. Analytics and ROI will outweigh the ‘WOW’ Factor New and exciting technology and ideas will always have a role at certain meetings, but for the mainstream, organizers will be now be looking for solid results and returns from the recent wave of technology, before investing money in the next innovations. Organizers will utilize their data better As organizers become more aware of how to use attendee participation data, more of a focus will be placed upon building registration, lead retrieval, web and mobile solutions in an integrated way so that businesses can obtain insight into events and attendee behavior. Data will drive future improvements and facilitate personalization across the event cycle. Sponsorship sales will adapt to meet the opportunities technology provides There are many targeted and innovative ways in which to monetize event technology, aside traditional sponsorship activity. However, technology is often decided upon late in the event cycle, and so a ‘Mobile App Sponsor’ may end up being the extent of what is sold. As organizers begin to understand their potential, sponsorship packages can be optimized and sales teams incentivized earlier on in the process. Organizers will track attendees movement around an event Indoor positioning systems could lead the way at events, allowing organizers to personalize push messages and notifications for every attendee. New sensor technology developments are starting to allow tracking within an indoor location, sending notifications about sessions nearby, and other useful information, improving attendee experience and return on investment. An increase in wearable technology Wearable technology, such as Google Glass, Samsung Smart Watch and

Super Planner

Apple iWatch, is likely to grow; both in terms of the number of devices available and the adoption the technology. For event organizers, this is a considerable development, as it will result in an increase in smart devices to contact their attendees with via push messages and collect more intelligent information.

shows per year. His career was highlighted by opening a number of shows for Celine Dion, and by being recognized by the industry he loved as the Entertainer of the Year two years in a row! Brian was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was three months old. As a young adult, he managed with less than 35 per cent lung function for over a decade as his career flourished, but his lungs declined to the point where he needed a transplant. On July 6, 2006, Brian received a double-lung transplant and was home by July 22. Eight weeks later he was back at work and “feeling phenomenal.” “I just never wanted to be defined by a disease but instead by who I am and what I could do,” he said in an interview just two months after the major surgery. Brian touched and wowed thousands of people with his talent, his personality, his wit and his values. He was deeply devoted to his wife Carrie, and there was never a father more proud than Brian was of his young daughter Sydney.

Brian was an award-winning illusionist who was twice named the Entertainer of the Year at the Canadian Event Industry STAR Awards. Brian’s love affair with magic began early on. Back in Grade 5, the former St. Gabriel elementary student pulled a magic book off the shelf in the school library, in defiance of an order to stop goofing around. He became hooked immediately. By Grade 8, Brian had transformed his magical pastime into a part-time job, performing at birthday parties. By the time the business student left university, his part time job had become a career. He had also found the love of his life Carrie, and together they developed an impressive stage show and performed coast to coast and internationally, headlining corporate events with a schedule of 60 to 80 Spring 2014 | canadianspecialevents.com Magazine | 41
