14.15 program shedding light
KISS & CRY
A home for innovative live performance from Canada and around the world Where audiences encounter daring productions, guided by a strong directorial vision Where theatre, dance, music and visual arts cohabit, dialogue, interrogate Where a bold, 21st century aesthetic reigns Where the boundaries of form and style are porous, expanded, eroded and exploded Where curiosity is rewarded with thrill, challenge, and delectation Where the tragedy and humour, the absurdity and militancy of our contemporary lives are delivered back to us through the brush of the poet A place of resistance to convention And renewal of tradition Welcome to Canadian Stage.
Thank you for joining us for our 2014.15 season — our 27th season producing and presenting innovative, artist-driven work at the Bluma Appel Theatre, the Berkeley Street Theatre and the High Park Amphitheatre. This upcoming season presents a new opportunity to discover, explore, experience and reflect upon a spectrum of human stories and emotional journeys that I am thrilled to share with you. Building our programming around a mixture of theatre, dance, music, and cross-disciplinary performance, KISS & CRY, our opening production, is a transfixing blend of all of these art forms. An intimate and poetic portrayal of a woman and the loves of her life, this unprecedented dance production is choreographed for the fingers of two hands, and is quite simply the most inspired fusion of dance and film I’ve ever seen. Breathtaking. WHAT MAKES A MAN is the first collaboration with our new Berkeley Street Partner Necessary Angel. Artistic Director Jennifer Tarver, director of 2011’s Beckett: Feck It! and last year’s highlyacclaimed masterpiece Venus in Fur, pivots effortlessly between music and theatre to bring us a

living portrait of the quintessential French chansonnier, Charles Aznavour. With over 1000 songs to his name, Aznavour’s repertoire provides an endless sea of material from which to share the debonair humour, the (at times) heartbreaking despair and the unalterable engagement of one of the great musical artists of the 20th century.
with competing forces at battle to secure a place. Inspired by post-war film noir, Helen Lawrence intertwines theatre, visual art, live-action filming and computer-generated images into a beautifully crafted, suspensefilled tale. You’ve truly never seen anything quite like this before. Claudia Moore and I met in Paris 30 years ago when we taught a class together at the Canadian Cultural Centre and I’ve been following her work ever since. One of the most unerringly committed dancers that Canada has ever produced, Claudia has presented OLDER & RECKLESS over the last 15 years to showcase and champion the work of celebrated dancers and choreographers in a later period of their careers. In collaboration with MOonhORsE Dance Theatre, this 15th anniversary presentation of Older & Reckless features such great choreographers and musicians as Robert Desrosiers, Bill Coleman, Esmeralda Enrique, pianist Eve Egoyan and cellist Anne Bourne. Appearing for five shows only this November in the Upstairs Theatre at Berkeley Street, you won’t want to miss this celebratory evening of dance.

HELEN LAWRENCE
HELEN LAWRENCE, a production we have developed over a three-year period, is the fruit of an exemplary collaboration between some of the greatest artistic forces in our country. Coming to Toronto after successful runs in Vancouver, Munich and the Edinburgh International Festival, world-renowned visual artist Stan Douglas and acclaimed screenwriter Chris Haddock have created a production that is at the frontier of new media. Stan and Chris set out to investigate the rifts and shifts that occur in society when a war has come to an end, and a new peacetime order needs to take root,

OPUS We have long wanted to introduce new circus work onto our Bluma stage, and how better do this than with OPUS, a work of stunning power and poetry by Australia’s most recognized theatre company, Circa, and the Debussy String Quartet from France. Featuring 14 acrobats tumbling, spinning and flying to the sounds of Shostakovich’s string quartets, Opus offers us an unexpected but meaningful dialogue between captivating feats of effortless physicality and some of the most sophisticated classical music of the 20th century. Direct, festive and unflinching, Opus is an evening full of surprise and delight. Returning to the Berkeley Street Theatre this holiday season, VENUS IN FUR tells the tale of a young actress determined to land the lead role in a new play based on the classic erotic novel by the Austrian 4

author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in Furs. Carly Street and Rick Miller reprise their roles in this 4-star production that won the coveted Audience Choice Award at the Doras this past June. Back by popular demand, this provocatively sexy show makes its final run this December with 9 shows only in our heritage Berkeley Street Theatre. The other Nutcracker!
VENUS IN FUR
The third and final season of our Berkeley Street Partner, Crow’s Theatre, brings us a new vision of Chekhov’s masterpiece THE SEAGULL. Artistic Director Chris Abraham, known for the scrutinizing care he devotes to presenting classical text in our contemporary world, has assembled an all-star cast including Christine Horne, Tom McCamus, Yanna McIntosh, Eric Peterson, Philip Riccio, Tom Rooney and Bahia Watson to present this timeless play juxtaposing the life we live and the life we long for. I am particularly delighted to have one of Chekov’s great plays this season in the Berkeley Street Theatre, an ideal space to present the humanity, rawness and irreverent humour that spills out of this great playwright’s works. Coming to the Bluma Appel Theatre this January is THE OTHER PLACE,
THE OTHER PLACE
HARPER REGAN is one woman’s suburban odyssey as she deals with loss - an absorbing story that illuminates the very meaning of loyalty, morality and the bonds of family. Recent recipient of the prestigious Olivier Award, playwright Simon Stephens has an unparalleled ability to tackle large subjects - here, “the disappearance of the gods” in today’s world - within a domestic drama. Opening in March 2015, Harper Regan is a very funny, very piercing play that I’m thrilled to be directing for a slightly-revisioned Bluma stage. SPOTLIGHT SOUTH AFRICA is our third biannual Spotlight Festival, and our most ambitious one yet. Over a three-week period, our theatres will come alive with works that are a testimony to the extraordinary vitality and originality of the artistic output of this ever-struggling nation. Set against the vibrant turbulence of the 1950’s, NONGOGO by Athol Fugard is a funny yet heartbreaking play that tells the tale of how a township romance unfolds as longburied secrets are revealed. UBU AND THE TRUTH COMMISSION, a collaboration between visual artist and stage director William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company (War Horse), is a searingly ironic narrative illustrated by gorgeous puppetry and sumptuous sketched imagery that asks Photo by Val Adamson
an emotionally dense play by American playwright Sharr White dealing with a subject that concerns us to an ever-increasing degree: mental incapacitation and the loss of autonomy over one’s own life. In this brilliantly troubling and unexpectedly humorous play, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, the past collides with the present and the elusive truth about a successful neuroscientist begins to surface. Daniel Brooks returns to Canadian Stage to direct this psychological drama after our highly successful run of RACE in 2013.
DOMINION essential questions in the wake of the famous Truth and Reconciliation Commission established by Nelson Mandela after liberation. Mamela Nyamza, the creator of THE MEAL and HATCHED, was the first black dancer with South Africa’s National Ballet Company in Pretoria. Though often sidelined in favour of white dancers, she created her own poignant tales from her perspective as a woman, an artist, an African and a single mother.

of South African society pre and post-apartheid. In 2001, a township called Newtown in the center of Johannesburg was pegged to be bulldozed overnight due to the living conditions in the area. Residents, many of whom were not provided with new accommodations, were nevertheless evacuated in extremis. Chandelier is Cohen’s attempt to shine a light on this event. To close our season, we’re thrilled to welcome back Robert Lepage’s NEEDLES AND OPIUM, following sold-out shows at Canadian Stage in 2013. Featuring astounding technological wizardry and deeply poignant performances that have dazzled audiences around the world, Needles and Opium is a beautifully poetic and transformative masterpiece you won’t want to miss this second time around. So brace yourselves – the territories we are exploring this year offer unparalleled vistas, but they ain’t for the weak of heart! Enjoy. MATTHEW JOCELYN Artistic & General Director

DOMINION is a diptych by up-andcoming choreographer Luyanda Sidiya in his second only appearance in North America. The two chapters of his dance program create a dialogue between the deep and transformative tribal energy Sidiya senses from his land and people and its ongoing history of political abuse and tyranny.
