SETTING THE STAGE BY SARAH LISS
Arguably more than any other medium, live theatre is an art form that finds power in its paradoxes. It can be both deeply intimate, an experience that takes place in near-silence, under cover of dark, nestled into the cocoon of a solitary seat; and profoundly collective, an act of bearing witness shared with dozens of other patrons. It is scripted words committed to memory and rehearsed over and over again, and it is dazzlingly spontaneous. It is movement and text, body and brain. It is a cacophony of sound and speech, and it is the meaning found in moments of complete quiet. Since Matthew Jocelyn became the Artistic & General Director of Canadian Stage half a decade ago—he’s now celebrating his sixth season at the helm—he has revelled in exploring those tensions. Under Jocelyn’s watch, the company has evolved its focus, moving beyond traditional repertory to mount works that fuse dance and poetry, film noir and immersive 3-D innovation, documentary and musical theatre, big-screen projections and tiny dioramas. He is quick to emphasize that, for all this cross-pollination, Canadian Stage is not flying the flag of experimental or marginal creations. Jocelyn’s commitment is to “radical mainstream theatre,” an effort to bring work that is uncompromising, that is on the cutting edge of artistic and philosophical conversations, to as many open minds and hearts as possible.
It’s about opening our doors and showing our curiosity, our interest, our willingness, and our collaborative spirit, so that reciprocity can happen for our own artists.
Though Jocelyn has demonstrated a deft mastery of the many paradoxes that drive modern performance, he is most passionate about one in particular: “To have national relevance, you have to have an international profile,” he explains. His mission is to create a home for the country’s finest contemporary artists—by placing their voices in conversation with those from around the world. To this end, Canadian Stage has overseen the first-ever English-Canadian theatre production to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival—Helen Lawrence, a bracing hardboiled piece about a mysterious femme fatale, co-created by Vancouver artist Stan Douglas and TV ace Chris Haddock. This season, Jocelyn will direct the North American premiere of Julie, a contemporary opera based on the classic Strindberg play, by the celebrated Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans. “If, as Canadians, we are willing to invest in international work, then international companies will be more interested in investing in work by Canadian creators,” Jocelyn says. “It’s about opening our doors and showing our curiosity, our interest, our willingness, and our collaborative spirit, so that reciprocity can happen for our own artists.” 4
The results of this approach have been remarkable. Managing Director Su Hutchinson, who joined the company in 2009, has helped put Jocelyn’s ambitious ideas into practise. From her background in the independent Canadian music community, Hutchinson was able to adapt some key strategies. Among them: if potential consumers lie outside of our national borders, potential sources of funding can be found there, too; a lean, nimble infrastructure is an infrastructure that can lead to financial security. With her input, for the third year in a row, Canadian Stage boasts a surplus of more than $100,000, allowing the company to address an inherited deficit and fund the development of bold new work. That means, for instance, investing in the next generation of vital young creators, like the Governor General’s Award–winning playwright Jordan Tannahill, who will have two new plays performed at the Berkeley Street Theatre this year. It also means supporting up-and-coming talents through a collaboration with York University’s Master of Fine Arts program that provides emerging directors with once-in-alifetime opportunities and hands-on experience in large-scale theatre. And audiences are evolving: a full 50 per cent of patrons are under the age of 50—a number unheard of in North America.

It’s about mixing disciplines, mixing languages within those disciplines, mixing artists from different traditions
The passion and ingenuity evident in recent programming have been clear catalysts for these changes. In addition to Helen Lawrence, which has been electrifying audiences in Edinburgh, Munich, and New York, Jocelyn’s Canadian Stage is making it possible for Toronto theatregoers to take in spectacular work from abroad. The 15.16 season will see, among other highlights, the 5

You will have the chance to marvel at Betroffenheit, a transcendent meditation on grief and survival, realized by the sublime Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite and performer Jonathon Young. Akram Khan, who delighted crowds with 2013’s DESH, returns to Canadian Stage with Torobaka, a dance piece that weaves together Spanish and Bengali traditions, co-created with flamenco maestro Israel Galvan. And this spring marks the groundbreaking launch of the Célébration de la francophonie, a three-day festival dedicated to the tremendous musical talents working in the French language in Canada and beyond, featuring Acadian pop phenom Lisa LeBlanc and Montreal-born, Paris-based chanteuse Mélissa Laveaux. For Canadian Stage, projects such as these, which hinge on community and culture, play a vital role in ensuring that the company is not only reaching out to partners around the world, but working to mirror what’s happening in its own backyard.

North American premieres of Cold Blood, an outstanding multimedia production featuring hands dancing on miniature sets, from the creators of last year’s popular Kiss & Cry, and Chimerica, British playwright Lucy Kirkwood’s awardwinning play about the legacy of Tiananmen Square, directed by local powerhouse Chris Abraham.
“Canadian Stage is a metaphor for Toronto today, because it’s all about mixing,” Jocelyn says. “It’s about mixing disciplines, mixing languages within those disciplines, mixing artists from different traditions. And that’s what is so inspiring about the city we live in today. We need art that reflects that in a profound, substantive way.”
