A CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT FOR CANADIAN STAGE Helen Lawrence triumphs in New York and Belgium
Following successful international presentations in 2014 at the Munich Kammerspiele and the Edinburgh International Festival, this past October 2015, Canadian Stage toured its groundbreaking production of Helen Lawrence to BAM’s prestigious Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York and the state-of-the-art deSingel arts campus in Antwerp, Belgium. Set in post-war 1948, Helen Lawrence investigates the microcosm of human behaviour and social interaction in a long-forgotten part of Vancouver: Hogan’s Alley. The classic film noir style employed by writer Chris Haddock in the production first evolved in postwar America, and resonated strongly with New York audiences. An ensemble of twelve actors operate cameras and film their performances as the story plays out with computer generated recreations projected on a screen at the front of the stage. Conceived and directed by celebrated visual artist Stan Douglas, the experience unfolds as an integrated real-time, live-action filmmaking thriller. Canadian Stage is committed to being a home where artists can create, incubate and push the boundaries of their craft; shaping the future of theatre through pioneering new methods and forms of creative practice. Our audiences come to the theatre with a critical eye for reflection – to experience the performance through the most innovative lens.

In building reciprocal relationships with the world’s most prestigious and daring multi-arts centres, we can expand engagement for our artists and build a larger audience base for their work. Close to 15,000 people have experienced Helen Lawrence to date, a crowning achievement for Canadian Stage and the stellar allCanadian creative team that make up this world-class production.
“The clever, ambitious effort, the brainchild of Canadian Stage, is hypnotic to watch” – HUFFINGTON POST (US)

IN RESIDENCY WITH THEATRE SMASH As part of their first year in residency at the Berkeley Street Theatre, Theatre Smash stages the North American premiere of Philipp Löhle's globetrotting social comedy Das Ding (The Thing). This ambitious and provocative script spans an interconnected world that binds the fates of the African Siwa, Chinese business people, Romanian pig-breeders and two young newlyweds through the searing observations of an eponymous talking carbon fibre called "the thing". The Berkeley Street Partnership at Canadian Stage is a multiyear residency opportunity for Toronto’s leading independent theatre companies. Canadian Stage carefully curates selected companies to ensure that audiences experience some of our most vibrant contemporary performance work, while giving companies access to all levels of artistic and administrative resources.

Das Ding (The Thing) premiered on May 14, 2011 at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg in cooperation with the Ruhr Festival Recklinghausen. It took less than a year for the buzz of this German work to spike our interest. Through the support of the Goethe-Institut and with permission from playwright Philipp Löhle, Theatre Smash connected with Birgit Schreyer Duarte, Canadian Stage dramaturg, to begin the first English translation – and Canadian adaptation – of the work. In January 2013, the play received a Script Smash workshop focusing on translation and design. In 2015, we held another workshop focusing on the casting breakdown and representation. Since Theatre Smash was founded in 2005 we have aimed to develop and produce contemporary theatre with a global twist. Our work on German language plays (The Ugly One, The Bus, Norway. Today) showed us that both our artists and audiences have an attraction to these highly theatrical and deeply intellectual scripts. Being in residence at Canadian Stage means that we are given greater access to resources and the opportunities to find riveting contemporary international plays, commission translations of these scripts and bring them to full productions. We are honoured and excited to be part of Canadian Stage’s season! - Ashlie Corcoran DIRECTOR, ARTISTIC PRODUCER, THEATRE SMASH
On stage at the Berkeley Upstairs Theatre APR 12 – MAY 1 Next, Theatre Smash presents KISS by Guillermo Calderón in co-production with ARC and in partnership with Canadian Stage, Mar 28-Apr 16, 2017 as part of the 16.17 season. 7

Jordan Tannahill, photo: Lacey Creighton
THE RENAISSANCE MAN Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Jordan Tannahill on Botticelli in the Fire & Sunday in Sodom: a world-premiere double-bill commissioned and produced by Canadian Stage in a unique collaboration with the the Theatre department in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University. Tannahill is a former Ontario Arts Council Playwright-in-Residence at Canadian Stage. The two plays in this double-bill question who writes the official record. Through history, that has seldom been the politically dispossessed. As the old aphorism goes, the deer never tells the story of the hunt. These two plays present joyfully apocryphal retellings of two events — one historic, one mythic — that question the official record via a decidedly queer and feminist lenses. Regarding Botticelli in the Fire, I was intrigued by a footnote in an art history textbook I came across which mentioned that Sandro Botticelli — the famed painter of pagan imagery in the early Renaissance — burned several of his lost masterpieces at the Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497. The Bonfire of the Vanities was a massive inferno of books, paintings, musical instruments, and all manner of ‘occasions of sin’ orchestrated by the charismatic friar Girolamo Savonarola, in reaction to the emergence of secular thought and the Renaissance. Many historians believe that Botticelli was genuinely swayed by the friar’s firebrand teachings, but Botticelli in the Fire goes about providing an alternate rationale for his drastic action. The play is a meditation on the ways in which, throughout history, pleasure, sexuality and ‘vice’ are blamed for all manner of ills. As Lorenzo di Medici says at one point in the play: “There is always a plague, there is always a fire, and there is always a friar who wants to throw people into it." Sunday in Sodom, on the other hand, is a feminist retelling of the mythic destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as told by Lot's wife; a story recounted in the holy books of all three Abrahamic faiths. In the Bible she is unnamed, mentioned in a single sentence when she is turned to a pillar of salt for looking back at the destruction of her hometown. I grew up in a religious household; my father read the Bible to my brother and I as a bedtime story each night before bed. The story of Lot’s wife was seared into my consciousness at a very young age. I tried to imagine what went through her mind as she decided to disobey god and turn back to behold his wrath. I would try to imagine her face. Sometimes I would imagine her as my own mother. In Sunday in Sodom her name is Edith, and she recounts that final, fateful day, in a town that is situated both within a mythic, Biblical past and a too-real contemporary present. - Jordan Tannahill
