THIS 30TH SEASON CONTINUES AND CONCLUDES with symbol upon symbol in our anniversary programming: Morris Panych and James Rolfe’s The Overcoat: A Musical Tailoring, a sumptuous reimagining of one of Canadian Stage’s legendary successes; Love and Information by the inimitable grand-master of British theatre, Caryl Churchill, directed by Tanja Jacobs and Alistair Newton, two recent graduates of our now internationally recognized MFA directing program, in collaboration with York University; the return of Crystal Pite and Jonathon Young’s epic Betroffenheit, created by two artists who have been seminal to Canadian Stage’s artistic identity these past nine years, and who continue to forge new paths into the core of our humanity; and the first year of a residency with Njo Kong Kie - who created the music for Edouard Lock’s intoxicating Untitled in my very first season at Canadian Stage - now producing his playful, everso-slightly subversive Picnic in the Cemetery.
I love it when some of the most radical expressions of today find their roots in art of the past, when linkages, artistic debts, inspiration are generously and gratefully acknowledged. I love it when we feel we are teetering on the edge of something just as it is being discovered, knowing that it is somehow tethered to a long and equally adventuresome tradition of artists ever desirous to find the most appropriate, the most exacting language with which to address the marvelous and terrifying contradictions of today’s world, of each and every one of us. Canadian Stage is a place of cultivated, even joyous discomfort, a place where expectations are defied and where unexpected desires are awoken. It is a place where artists are invited to tell their stories, to share their most vital perspectives on the what, the who and the why of our lives, not to appease, but to deepen our own relationship with the what, the who and the why. It is a place of offerings, and we are so very happy that you are here to receive. May this uncensored exchange and this uncensoring place of exchange continue for a very, very long time into the future.

PE RS PEC TIVE S NJO KONG KIE ON HIS MUSICAL PICNIC Canadian Stage’s Berkeley Street Theatre Company-in-Residence for 17.18 and 18.19 is Music Picnic, founded by composer Njo Kong Kie, to create and produce picnics, musical or otherwise. The company’s work is eclectic, joyful, whimsical, intimate, meditative, communal and, above all, delicious. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I’m a composer who writes music for dance, theatre, and occasionally for TV. I was born in Indonesia, grew up in Macau and now call Toronto home. For many years, I was the music director and pianist for the dance company La La La Human Steps. My most recent works include music for the play Infinity by Hannah Moscovitch (Volcano/Tarragon) and Mr. Shi and His Lover, a Mandarin music theatre piece, which was also the first non-English presentation at both the Tarragon Theatre and the National Arts Centre English Theatre. WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF MUSIC PICNIC? Quite simply, the name Music Picnic combines two of my favourite things. My favourite picnic spot in the city is the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, where I often find myself with a flask of tea and some yummies, having a tranquil moment. HOW DID PICNIC IN THE CEMETERY COME INTO BEING? While touring with La La La Human Steps, I wrote short pieces to amuse my fellow musicians. This collection of work became Picnic in the Cemetery, an album of original compositions for violin, cello and piano. At its core, Picnic in the Cemetery is a chamber music concert, featuring a wide range of styles – from minimalist work with driving rhythm, to cinematic musical painting, to lyrical songs without words; but the stage show is also a hybrid performance that incorporates elements of theatre and visual arts. While a general theme unifies this non-text-based concert theatre work, there is no singular story, every audience member will form their own unique narrative. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE AUDIENCES TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR WORK? If everyone leaves the theatre having had an enjoyable concert experience, we have done our job. If everyone leaves the theatre having also had a fun theatre experience, that is an added bonus; and if we all leave the theatre having shared a memorable life moment, that, to me is the most precious.
Picnic In the Cemetery runs April 26-May 6 at the Berkeley Street Upstairs Theatre. 7

MUSIC PICNIC HAS A VERY BUSY YEAR AHEAD, WHAT OTHER PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? I swallowed a moon made of iron, which will have its world premiere at Canadian Stage in May 2019, is what I call a requiem of our digital age. It’s a Chinese song cycle set to the poetry of Xu Lizhi, and pays tribute to the unseen struggles of factory workers that provide the amenities of our digital lives. I’m also working on The Year of the Cello, a play by Marjorie Chan set in 1920’s Hong Kong featuring solo cello music and a new opera The Futures Market with Douglas Rodger.

RBC EMERGING ARTIST PROGRAM Through the invaluable support of the RBC Foundation, Canadian Stage continues to offer vital mentorship, development support, networking opportunities and professional resources to support the career development of our city’s emerging theatre artists. 17.18 DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENT RESIDENCY PARTICIPANTS Ali Joy Richardson, Writer/Director In development with her own script, A Bear Awake in Winter. “The story of a high school band class and their new teacher in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, this play hinges on an act of violence at a school dance. It’s darkly funny, difficult, and pushes our capacity for empathy. Seven actors, six instruments; one week in which the world goes sideways.” Nikki Shaffeeullah, Director, Theatre-maker In development with a devised adaptation of Nalo Hopkinson’ s short story Message in a Bottle. “As a theatre maker who has been inspired by visionary fiction - science fiction that explores questions of social justice - in literature, I’m interested in the aesthetic and social possibilities of activating the genre on stage. The particular story is a unique time travel tale that asks questions about the nature of art; what we consider to be great; what endures; who endures.” 17.18 COMPANY-IN-RESIDENCE Bad New Days In development with Paolozzopedia. “We’re searching for a poetic theatre of gesture that does not reflect life, but responds to it. Mixing contemporary formal experimentation with ‘popular’ forms of theatre, we’re exploring how memory and experience are expressed through the body and how the search for meaning is transformed by the presence of death.” Canadian Stage is grateful for RBC Foundation’s generous and continued support of The Canadian Stage RBC Emerging Artist Program.
