Page 1

We are thrilled to welcome you to Canadian Stage’s 22–23 season. This year, we are presenting vital, joyful stories, mounting large-scale plays on the Bluma stage, and welcoming back some of our favourite artists to our stages. Our season includes blockbuster plays (Choir Boy, Public Enemy), an unforgettable adaptation of one of our nation’s most treasured novels (Fall On Your Knees), the Canadian premiere of a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama (Fairview), a new work by one of Europe’s most celebrated theatre companies (Are we not drawn onward to new erA), the return of the beloved Ronnie Burkett to Canadian Stage (Little Dickens), and a new piece by the outstanding Red Sky Performance (Miigis: Underwater Panther), among other shows. It is a season that celebrates the indelible spirit of artists who are defining contemporary culture today. Take a moment to explore these pages and we hope you’ll join us for this incredible season. We can’t wait to see you at the theatre!

This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: The Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit River), The Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Public Enemy By Olivier Choinière • Translated and Adapted by Bobby Theodore Directed by Brendan Healy With Rosemary Dunsmore, Matthew Edison, Jonathan Goad, Michelle Monteith, Amy Rutherford, and more. You're invited to a dinner unlike any you've attended before - a familiar setting with a surreal twist.

September 20 – October 2, 2022

Meet Elizabeth, the frail but stubborn matriarch hosting dinner for her three children - James, Melissa, and ne'er-do-well Danny - and her two grandchildren, teen Tyler and young Olivia, whose unsettling presence permeates the story.

A Canadian Stage production.

In the blistering Public Enemy, directed in its Canadian English-language premiere by Artistic Director Brendan Healy, the always subversive Olivier Choinière fuses painstakingly choreographed rapid-fire dialogue with elements of the fantastical, as we chart through moments that are both eerily recognizable and piercingly insightful.

Public Enemy is underwritten by Sandra Simpson in recognition of her generous gift to Canadian Stage's Transformation Campaign. Public Enemy is generously underwritten by John and Nancy Embry. This translation was commissioned by L’ACTIVITÉ with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Choinière has a gift for putting a finger on the pulse of our society that is both powerful and sublime. — Revue Jeu

Choir Boy

David Andrew Reid

Theatre • USA Bluma Appel Theatre

By Tarell Alvin McCraney Directed by Mike Payette With Scott Bellis, Andrew Broderick, Daren A. Herbert, Clarence 'CJ' Jura, David Andrew Reid, Savion Roach, and more. November 8 – 19, 2022

From the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Moonlight comes the Broadway hit Choir Boy, a coming-of-age play threaded through with rapturous gospel hymns.

Co-produced by Canadian Stage & Arts Club Theatre Company (Vancouver).

Pharus is a senior at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, and the proud leader of its legendary gospel choir. The prestigious school is committed to building ‘strong, ethical Black men,’ but conforming to their traditions becomes harder as he learns to accept his personal truth. Weighing reconciliation and rebellion, Choir Boy is a love letter to the healing power of music, featuring gorgeously sung a cappella hymns.

Theatre • Canada Marilyn and Charles Baillie Theatre

Little Dickens Created and performed by Ronnie Burkett The cast of The Daisy Theatre take on the beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, in the merriest marionette mash-up ever.

November 23 – December 18, 2022

Faded Daisy diva, Esmé Massengill, plays the role of miserly, drunken, bitter Esmé Scrooge, in this Burkett-esque retelling of the Dickens classic. As always with an improvised Daisy show, there is no set script, and in the journey of Esmé Scrooge toward redemption, she encounters all the Daisy favourites portraying Dickens’ familiar characters. In keeping with the vaudeville show theme of The Daisy Theatre, popular Christmas songs will feature in a burlesque opening, sultry jazz solos, and the merriment of Fezziwig’s party.

*This production is intended for adult audiences only, ages 16+. Children under the age of 16 will not be admitted. A Canadian Stage presentation. Ronnie Burkett's appearance is generously supported by the Remembering Otto & Marie Pick Charitable Foundation.

A raucous, adults-only holiday treat, Little Dickens holds true to the heart of A Christmas Carol by featuring The Daisy Theatre’s most iconic and beloved character, Schnitzel, as Tiny Tim.

Hysterically funny and often very naughty. — Montreal Gazette Lightheartedly silly, sometimes deliriously so…Mr. Burkett is a benevolent god: indelicate, a little poignant and kind of fantastic. — The New York Times

Theatre • Belgium Bluma Appel Theatre

Ontroerend Goed February 9 – 11, 2023

A Canadian Stage Presentation.

The influential Belgian company Ontroerend Goed visits Toronto for three nights only with a conceptually daring, visually stunning performance of environmental apocalypse – with a twist. The palindromic – in title and form – Are we not drawn onward to new erA presents a visual metaphor for this crucial moment in our future history. This incredibly inventive performance is both playful and surprising; hilarious and heart-achingly beautiful.

Canadian Premiere Pulitzer Prize Winner

Fairview By Jackie Sibblies Drury With Peter N. Bailey, Sascha Cole, Colin A. Doyle, Jennifer Dzialoszynski, Jeff Lillico, Chelsea Russell, Ordena Stephens-Thompson, and Sophia Walker. March 4 – 26, 2023

In Fairview, the Frasier household is preparing for Grandma’s birthday party, but not everything is as it seems. While Beverly holds on to her sanity by a thread, her sister can’t be bothered to help, her brother is MIA, her husband doesn’t seem to listen... and the party guests are more than unexpected. A poignant examination of power, Fairview confronts notions of theatre, race, and surveillance.

Human Measure by Cassils

A Vanguard Performance Series Two of Canada's most provocative creators present new urgent works that redefine the boundaries of live art.

Cabaret Noir

Internationally lauded, multidisciplinary artist Cassils brings their first piece of contemporary dance to Canadian Stage for a limited engagement. Featuring all Trans and Gender NonConforming (GNC) performers, Human Measure weaves elements of kinesiology, martial arts, sports science, and photography. A collaboration with choreographer Jasmine Albuquerque, who has worked with the likes of St Vincent, Devendra Banhart, Laura Marling and Mike Mills, the performance draws upon personal safety as well as vulnerability and problematizes visibility in a moment of heightened violence against the GNC/ Trans community.

October 27 – 29, 2022 Presented by Canadian Stage.

Marilyn and Charles Baillie Theatre

Cabaret Noir Created by Mélanie Demers, Mayday Danse Production. The cast of Cabaret Noir uses movement, dialogue, and music to reconstruct emblematic scenes from popular culture in a work that is both a celebration and resistance of concepts of "Blackness". The artists play with clichés, folklore, and prejudices, summoning the words of Frantz Fanon, Nina Simone, Dany Laferrière, and Spike Lee to illustrate that no external authority can define our identities.

February 9 – 11, 2023 A dance Immersion and Canadian Stage co-presentation.

Cabaret Noir contains text spoken in English, French, Spanish, and Creole.
