Canadian Stage Annual Report 2019
CO-CHAIRS’ REPORT Alexandra Baillie and Tony Baylis The 18.19 season at Canadian Stage was one of great transition and remarkable achievement. First and foremost, we welcomed a dynamic and inspiring new leadership team. Award-winning director Brendan Healy joined as Artistic Director in August 2018, and seasoned arts executive Monica Esteves began as Executive Director in December. Together, they see an adventurous and impactful future for the company and have already taken great strides towards achieving that vision, including:
11. Building an exceptional and committed senior management team;
22. Executing a successful season of awe-inspiring and collaborative art;
33. Developing a multi-year strategic plan with support from world-renowned arts consultant Michael Kaiser;
44. Announcing a bold and thought-provoking 19.20 season — Brendan’s first at Canadian Stage—that reflects today’s challenges, while inspiring hope and joy;
55. Raising a game-changing $2.8 million fund with 100% board participation to support transformational initiatives; and,
66. Reducing the company’s long-standing deficit by half,
bringing it below $1 million for the first time since 2006, and instituting a clear plan for deficit elimination .
The tremendous efforts of the leadership and staff of Canadian Stage, the board’s dedication, our Transformation Campaign donors and our deeply committed family of supporters achieved these remarkable accomplishments. We’d like to thank all of you for your belief in Canadian Stage. We’d also like to thank Matthew Jocelyn and Sherrie Johnson for the artistic foundation they established during their tenure and upon which we are building the company’s future.

We speak for the whole board when we say we are awed and invigorated by the new team, the vision they have defined for the company and the strength of their execution. We are excited for what lies ahead. As Co-Chairs, we experience Canadian Stage as a place for exploration, curiosity and reflection. It has opened our minds, connected us with our humanity and invited us into conversation. These conversations, whether internal or external, are what give us hope, as we believe they are catalysts for more engaged, vibrant and resilient communities. We are grateful to have served the company during this remarkable time in its history.

Canadian Stage Annual Report 2019
ARTISTIC AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS’ REPORT Brendan Healy and Monica Esteves The 18.19 season was a powerful assertion of the prominent role Canadian Stage plays within Canada’s cultural ecology. In this annual report, we invite you to re-experience the wide variety of rousing 18.19 season presentations so creatively provided by initiators and makers of unique theatrical works of art. Following the world-wide success of Betroffenheit, we were very proud to support Canada’s Crystal Pite and Jonathan Young in the creation and sold-out presentation of their latest collaboration, Revisor. We were also thrilled to support the premiere of Toronto’s own Peggy Baker in her choreographic debut for a large stage in who we are in the dark. The season included numerous exciting partnerships and collaborations allowing us to bring some of our country’s brightest creators to Canadian Stage: Robert Lepage; Kim Collier; Chris Abraham; Ravi Jain; Sandra Laronde; and Eda Holmes. Among our international highlights was Akram Khan’s Olivier Award-winning Xenos. This production marked Akram’s first collaboration with Toronto writer Jordan Tannahill whom Akram met when he was with Canadian Stage in 2016. Incidentally, Jordan won a 2018 Governor General’s Award for his Canadian Stage plays Botticelli in the Fire and Sundays in Sodom. It was immensely gratifying to see the season program recognized with critical acclaim and awards. Hofesh Shechter’s gutting Grand Finale won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Touring Production and Every Brilliant Thing was nominated for Outstanding Direction in Brendan’s directorial debut with the company. Parallel to these exceptional artistic wonders, our season also resulted in financial and organizational success. The $2.8 million Transformation Campaign enabled us to jump-start the next chapter of Canadian Stage’s future with strategic investments and expanded programming while cutting the long-held accumulated deficit in half. We could not have done this without the leadership support of our catalyst donors, Marilyn & Charles Baillie and Sandra Simpson, to whom we are tremendously grateful. An exceptionally large village has made this magic happen. For their tireless work and steadfast commitment to our organization, Canadian Stage expresses heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of artists, staff, board members, volunteers, donors and audiences. Together, our efforts will ensure that Canadian Stage is a vital, artistic force locally, nationally and internationally.

transformation campaign In the fall of 2018, Canadian Stage board and staff launched the Transformation Campaign and, in a few short months, successfully raised a remarkable $2.8 million from 25 individuals. These generous gifts will fund strategic artistic and organizational investments throughout the next three seasons, including innovative artistic program development, increased organization and human resources, bestin-field consultancy with such experts as Michael M. Kaiser, and catalyst contributions to accumulated debt retirement by 2021. In addition to confirming 100% board participation in this initiative, Canadian Stage is honoured by the generosity and encouragement shown by the campaign’s lead donors which include two $1 million gifts from Marilyn & Charles Baillie and Sandra Simpson. To celebrate, Canadian Stage announced the renaming of the Berkeley Street Downstairs Theatre to the Marilyn & Charles Baillie Theatre in recognition of the Baillie family’s catalyst

Sandra’s gift was made in recognition of the innovative artistic program at Canadian Stage. Her gift helps sustain the vision and commitment to contextualizing the work of Canadian contemporary artists in an international conversation. Sandra has been an integral contributor to the culture of the contemporary arts in Canada as an art dealer, collector and philanthropist. Canadian Stage is deeply moved that Sandra has chosen to support the present and future vitality of this city’s leading contemporary performing arts organization with her generous gift.

RBC EMERGING ARTIST PROJECT
With the generous support of the RBC Foundation, Canadian Stage provides professional development opportunities for artistic innovators through residencies, mentorship and networking occasions. The RBC Emerging Artist Project gives our city’s up-and-coming theatre artists the space, time and resources they need to expand their artistry and realize their vision. 18.19 Season Artists: Aida Keykaii and Mohamad Yaghoubi of Nowadays Theatre, Tawiah Ben M’Carthy and Alyssa Martin.
“ My goal was to develop a full draft of my play Our Daughters. My experience as a playwright prior had been writing and performing solo plays and within collectives. As part of the RBC Emerging Artist Project I wanted to evolve my playwrighting skills, with a new multi-character play. The program offered me the opportunity to explore and investigate my individual process of creation. I am grateful to RBC Foundation for supporting this program, and to Canadian Stage for affording me the time, space and resource to workshop a draft of Our Daughters with a dramaturg and actors. Sandra Laronde, Artistic & Executive Director, Red Sky Performance
Through TD’s The Ready Commitment program, Canadian Stage offers mentorship and shares its resources with resident companies, including a rehearsal studio, technical expertise and office space. The Berkeley Street Companies-In-Residence are a catalyst for new creation, and this program helps them to build capacity and generate income. Red Sky Performance’s work in Trace was a new production that explored Indigenous connections to ancestral origins, inspired by Anishinaabe cosmology. Why Not Theatre’s production of Prince Hamlet was bilingual, told simultaneously in English and American Sign Language. And Music Picnic’s I Swallowed a Moon Made of Iron contained Chinese poems set to music, sung entirely in Mandarin.

Alexandra Baillie and Hedvig Alexander
On April 17, Canadian Stage and Soulpepper went headto-head in a riveting trivia match testing each company’s knowledge of theatre and each other’s programming. Held at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, guests enjoyed a sumptuous meal and were treated to three rounds of entertaining questions in this spell-binding showdown. strategic planning When the leadership at Canadian Stage determined the need for a strategic plan to chart its course over the next four years, it looked to internationally recognized expert in arts management, Michael M. Kaiser to consult. Kaiser has revived numerous major arts organizations, and has advised hundreds of companies worldwide, including London’s Royal Opera House, the American Ballet Theater and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He also served as the President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from January 2001 through August 2014. Having published eight highly acclaimed books about arts management, Kaiser advocates the importance of keeping the art central to the organization’s mission. Furthermore, he coaches organizations on how institutional and programmatic marketing can attract and grow engagement and support, ultimately drawing greater resources to re-invest in the artistic programming. This knowledge and experience made Michael Kaiser the ideal consultant to guide Canadian Stage through its strategic planning process, which focuses on setting the stage for the future.

CO R E VALU E S
creativity
inclusivity
Out of the strategic planning process, Canadian Stage identified the following core values to serve as guiding pillars for its programming and operations:
We inspire, cultivate and advocate for the creativity that is inherent in all people.
We are inclusive in all aspects of our organization.
Canadian Stage Annual Report 2019
empathy We are a space for people to develop their understanding of themselves and others.
excellence We deliver exceptional experiences to our artists, audiences, donors, staff members and volunteers.
collaboration We encourage partnerships and exchange between artists, communities, art disciplines, sectors and organizations.
community We take responsibility for how we contribute socially, economically, and educationally to our communities and we hold ourselves accountable to them.
“ Whenever you bring in a new artistic leader at an important organization, it’s a time to reflect on how are you going to move forward? What does the new artistic director want to say and do?”
Michael M. Kaiser, quoted from The Toronto Star, January 30, 2019.
A centreline through this last year has been rigorous strategic planning. We are thrilled to report that in January 2020—exactly one year since planning kicked off—we will be sharing the output of this work with our stakeholders.
The plan is a product of input from over two hundred direct stakeholders. We thank the many past and present artists, supporters, government officials, staff, board members, volunteers and community members who participated in the process and, in doing so, provided the internal and external introspection that has informed our plans with authenticity and vital context.
The Strategic Plan charts a long-range horizon for Canadian Stage. It provides a roadmap to guide the organization to a thrilling destination, as well as key goalposts to track our progress and objectives along the way. We are looking forward to sharing this energizing work.
