Remember Wadi Faynan? Remember when we used to go there to meet, celebrate, and enact rituals or sacrifices or ceremonies? I know, it was a long time ago – nearly twelve thousand years ago to be precise – but those memories, those desires and needs are still within us, right? We still gather to celebrate, enact ceremonies, share stories. Twelve thousand years ago, over three thousand years before the invention of agriculture and its outcome, sedentary society, our nomadic ancestors used to meet at Wadi Faynan – a recent archeological discovery situated in the south of Jordan – for something even more important: culture. That’s right – in an area uninhabited by any kind of permanent settlement, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest signs of civilization, dating from thousands of years before mankind began plowing fields and sowing seeds, lies the world’s first theatre. There is nothing – absolutely nothing – that compares to the experience of people coming together to hear a story and to share in the collective making and telling of our culture, our identity and our place within the world as both it and we evolve. Canadian Stage is such a gathering place, where urban nomads assemble to partake in the stories of today’s world, told by story-tellers who constantly re-examine and reinvent what storytelling is in the first place. Welcome to the magical realism of visual artist Stan Douglas and Chris Haddock’s Helen Lawrence, a spectacular production combining live filming, computer-generated
virtual sets and the most engaging troupe of actors you could dream of. Share life-changing discoveries told through the voices of Sharr White and Simon Stephens, two of today’s most prominent playwrights as seen through the vision of Daniel Brooks and myself, respectively. And celebrate the extraordinary musical and human legacy of Charles Aznavour and the ongoing dialogue that Anton Chekhov engages with the modern world, with our Berkeley Street partner companies, Necessary Angel and Crow’s Theatre. Our Spotlight Festival this year features a number of daring productions from South Africa which bring to light the unique artistic forces that are at work (and at play) in that still new and ever-struggling Republic. And we continue to explore and share work from Canada and around the world: Opus by Australia’s internationally acclaimed circus group Circa; Robert Lepage’s magical Needles and Opium; and, the unexpected beauty of Belgian choreographer Michèle Anne De Mey’s Kiss & Cry. The following pages will be your guide through these productions and many more. At Canadian Stage, we are undeniably part of this tradition that goes back twelve thousand years, a tradition that, in all those years, has not lost an ounce of its passion, its sense of celebration, its necessity. A tradition that begs to be renewed, and which itself renews our sense of being in the world. We are so happy to share it with you.

“Where do people go when they disappear from our life, from our memory?” This is the question haunting an elderly woman as she waits alone on the platform of a train station. French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour is one of the world’s last living “showmen” who, at 90 years, is still a dazzling performer and songwriter. Created from his rich and diverse catalogue of songs, What Makes a Man is inspired by the life he lived, observed and wrote about. In a moment of personal self-examination, four distinct aspects of one man are born: poet, survivor, performer and prophet, collectively embodied by four extraordinary vocal artists.

World-renowned visual artist Stan Douglas and acclaimed screenwriter Chris Haddock collaborate to create a production that is at the frontier of new media use in performance. Inspired by post-war film noir, Helen Lawrence intertwines theatre, visual art, live-action filming and computer-generated simulations in this beautifully crafted suspense-filled tale. As Vancouver struggles to reorganize itself after World War II, forces diverge as to who should really hold the power.

A play about the cruelty of love – a story about how we create stories – and about the heartbreakingly wide expanse between the life we live and the life we long for. Chekhov’s The Seagull was a spectacular failure when it premiered in 1895, but has survived to become one of the masterpieces of the modern era. Winner of the 2013 Siminovitch Prize, Chris Abraham brings to life this astonishingly contemporary play about a family at the end of an era, facing an uncertain future. Crow’s Theatre continues its residency at the Berkeley Street Theatre with another powerful and provocative production.
