Canadian Stage has three homes spread across our great city. The Bluma Appel and the Berkeley Street Complex bookend the vibrant St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood and run along what was once the shore of Lake Ontario. Our beautiful High Park Amphitheatre is nestled within the grassy mounds and forests of our city’s most beloved park. Canadian Stage is grateful to be able to tell our stories on this bountiful land that we all share.

This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: the Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Director’s Note

“The spring, the summer, the childing autumn, angry winter change their wonted liveries, and the mazed world, by their increase, now knows not which is which”

Even if you have never read, seen or heard Shakespeare, these words and images spoken by the Fairy Queen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream are crystal clear: “the amazed world is changing!” But for better or for worse? Is the dream of our future on this Earth filled with joy and compassion? Or is it a nightmare of chaotic proportions? Or is it something in between?

Whatever the answer, this story continues to resonate with audiences today as much as it did 40 years ago when the first production of Dream in High Park was performed in this very space. It spoke to an audience over 400 years ago in Shakespeare’s day and will undoubtedly speak to generations 400 years from now…that is, if we heed the messages embedded in this spirited comedy where, “through this distemperature, we see the seasons alter”.

We hope you will take the time at some point in our fairy tale to reflect upon how this tradition of gathering together on this ancient land, should never be taken for granted. We welcome you, kids and adults of all ages, to our world of shadows and great wonder!
