ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES Some twenty-five years ago, my father sent me an impassioned letter to Paris where I was then living, saying that he had just attended the most extraordinary piece of theatre, House – written and performed by one Daniel MacIvor, directed by another Daniel Brooks. A week later the script arrived in my mailbox (remember mailboxes, the real ones?!), and I too became hooked by the bitingly acute, smartly chiselled language of Daniel MacIvor, his capacity to craft such insightful, at times agonizingly, familiar perceptions with such graciously snarly humour! The other Daniel, Brooks, I had met in Paris a couple of years earlier, when he had spent some time working with the great French director Roger Planchon. I could only imagine his own craft, precise, word-perfect, scalpel-like, in building his stage images and in bringing forth the meaning of the text. Rare are the artistic collaborations which last a decade. This one has lasted three decades, and continues to bring us rare and exacting moments of theatre. Who Killed Spalding Gray? is yet another new departure, another episode of unexpectedness, as Daniel and Daniel try to unravel a great mystery, and ravel us up in doing so. I am beyond words happy to share this work with you. And a big shout out to the Luminato Festival, who first presented this work in Toronto in 2014. MATTHEW JOCELYN
