holidays. An ideal destination for sun and beaches, the Canaries are today as well, forerunners in culture, sports, gastronomy and nature. Canarias online is also going on holiday, but not without leaving you with this special summer issue, where you can discover what is currently happening in our Islands. In our main interview you will meet Thomas Rydhal who, with his novel The Hermit, has placed the island

of Fuerteventura in the focus point of contemporary literature. We continue by telling you how Tenerife became the meeting point for WISTA, the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association; their president, Laura Ferrario, explains the organization to us. In this issue we introduce two new sections, one in which we look to the past to learn about the history of the Islands, guided by Néstor Verona, historian and anthropologist, and the other in which Angel Pérez brings us closer to the Good Life by revealing the latest trends. And as always, our collaborator Domingo J. González brings us Cultural and Relax. Furthermore you have the section Potatoes and Sauce, dedicated to marinated tuna, and in our Health section we talk about

buena vida

By: Ángel Pérez Acosta

A new commandment The Odyssey of Ulises; Magellan and William Fogg’s dream of sailing around the World; Dorothy’s walk to the green Emerald City; Lidenbrock’s magical voyage to the centre of the Earth. Different, distinct, risky: journeys when all is said and done, and therefore enviable

They say that most important and transcendental trip is the one to our interior,

Let your mouth savour a Mexican tamale

the one which reveals the greatness of self-discovery. I do not intend to awaken the ire of those who defend self-help at any cost. Heaven forbid that I incur the enmity of the faithful disciples of Bucay and Coelho amongst others, but taking refuge in the most simple and elemental superficiality, I prefer those trips for which I at least have to prepare a knapsack. I respect those travellers who sitting on their sofa follow the paths of their soul, the lanes of their frustrations and the lagoons of their memory, but I am more inclined towards boarding gates, a guided tour or a stateroom facing the sea. I admit it: I was born with a suitcase in my hand. Near or far, in a group or on my own, in luxury or with the bare minimum, I can never refuse a trip that will allow me to discover the unknown or revisit the known.

For these holidays: I am a Voyager and shown an extreme intolerance for those who say “Don’t go”. There is never a reason not to go, even if your sister-in-law didn’t like the food or if your friend was eaten alive by mosquitos, you have to go. Don’t let anyone dampen your pleasure or keep your feet from walking down the Champs Elysées, the Crater of Taburiente or New York’s Soho; let your eyes open to the sun of El Cairo o Famara, let your mouth savour a Mexican tamale, a quesadilla from El Hierro or a mouth-watering salmorejo of Cordoba Nothing teaches more, nothing makes you feel better than leaving your own home, even for a distance of a few kilometres or for a few days. Plane, car, the kids, your mother-in-law, a hotel, a tent, “allincluded” or shopping at the supermarket. Whatever and however, but during these holidays, keep the sacred commandment: “You shall travel, above all things.”

Awards and farewells The past few months have inevitably been marked by the regional elections of 24th May. A new political cycle now begin. We’ll see what surprises lay in store for us in the cultural area. While the new machinery is starting up – I don’t expect it to be fully greased until September -. we’ll stay on our usual path: covering the events of months that we also marked by institutional recognitions and a sad farewell. Thomas Rydahl This Danish autor situates his trilogy of crime novels The Hermit in Fuerteventura. Canarias online made a lightening trip to Fuerteventura to speak with Danish Thomas Tydahl, who presented the first novel of this saga that takes place on Fuerteventura, and in which the streets and coasts of the island are offered up to the reader as the scene of a mystery that the main carรกcter of the novel Erhard Jorgensen will try to unravel and solve.

» The Hermit is your first novel. ¿How did it occur to you to situate it in Fuerteventura? It’s so hard to create a great character in a novel and I think it’s very important that a character and the setting in a novel are linked. You know that you can’t just take out the character or the setting to the plot so you need to have something in common and to hear a beating heart, in a sense.

Here nature and the whole experience of living here is a big part of the Island and that’s part of the story as well

So I was interested in telling a story of someone older than me, so I wouldn’t have this opportunity to go back on my life and maybe regret some things and something like that. So I wanted to create this character and I like this part about the human being where things are very simple, so the character doesn’t care about eating or this kind of irrelevant stuff. WISTA, acronym for Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association, is an international non-profit organization composed of professional women linked to the maritime sector, with a significant international repercussion. Message As President, Laura explained to us that the message Wista transmits is “That the maritime sector has fascinating work opportunities to offer. That successful future development of the industry requires striving toward excellence and this excellence is not a matter of gender, it depends entirely upon the person. Women have aptitudes for organization, decision-making, crisis managing, etc. that the sector cannot afford to ignore. So that women may fulfil their potential normally, we have to fight battles on two fronts: on one hand to eliminate barriers and prejudice, and on the other, to help ambitious women fulfil their dreams and goals, with the full knowledge that their objectives are not out of reach."

Nutrition in Infancy Part II The first year

In our last issue we advanced to you that the health seminars run by the midwives of the area of La Matanza de Acentejo provided us with more material than we could cover in a single article. It is vitally important to know how the nutrition of a baby should vary from the time of birth until the end of the first year. So here we will tell you a good part of what you should know regarding nutrition during the first year of a child’s life.

The mother will note that two or three days after birth, the baby will start nursing more actively and demand more feeding.

Formula milk: In the event that the mother opts for formula milk, it is important to know: that the spoonful should be level and never pressed: > Remains of previous bottles should never be reused. > The temperature of the milk should always be tested. > A quantity sufficient for several bottles can be made at one time as long as they are used within 24 hours and are kept in the back of the refrigerator, not in the door.

Riley is an 11 year old girl who moves to San Francisco with her family. But she is not the star of the movie; she’s the stage. In her mind live Happiness, Anger, Ire and Sadness. The director is Pete Docte, screenwriter and co-director of the unforgettable Up, and who will be one responsible for the new instalment of the Toy Story saga.

BR Jaques Tati Integral Pack 7 BR + libretto This is one of the preferences of filmgoers and historians, but it was also a favourite of his contemporaries. A large part of the warm and surreal humour of Tati - and of his alter ego, M. Hublot - comes together in this pack which includes his six full-length films, amongst those masterpieces as Holiday, My Uncle and Playtime, seven short films and many fascinating extras.

CD Drones Muse It isn’t easy to keep going for 20 years on the basis of great drama, but they have done it, managing, furthermore, to move masses. Their new disc, Drones, is preceded by a single, The Handler, which offers us their best rock side. We’ll see what their new disc says to us. They are the lead act at Bilbao BBK Live in July.

We recommend the Facebook page of one of our favourite authors. We really like it, firstly because she personally runs it, and secondly because she keeps it updated almost daily with information about her books and her work as a journalist. Elvira Lindo writes articles for El País, she’s the creator of the well-known character Manolito Gafotas, and has to her credit, amongst other books: Lugares que no quiero compartir con nadie (Places I don’t Want to Share with Anyone) and Don de gentes (People Skills).

We are promoting the Twitter account for Abubukaka, because these guys never fail to surprise us with their unique brand of never-ending humour. In theatres , at festivals and other venues throughout the Islands, Abubukaka has become a symbol for Canary Island humour, presented freshly by a new generation and built on the solid professional base that comes out of the Canary Island School of Acting. Here you can enjoy them at the height of their absurdity. Have fun with them.
