GREEN GAS REFRIGERANT CHOICES
HIGH-PERFORMING R-410A
Another key element that determines the efficiency of an air conditioning system is the effectiveness of its refrigerant gas. Look for units that are designed to optimize the selected refrigerant.
Environmentally Responsible
The strongest performer of the green gases is R-410A. It not only outperforms its counterparts, it also outperforms R-22 by 6%.
A few of the new green gas blends are essentially dropin replacements for equipment originally designed for R-22, but these alternatives typically result in a loss of system performance. So a system that once produced 16,000 BTUs may only produce 11,000 BTUs with the new gas. Unfortunately, some manufacturers have not updated their BTU label ratings after the switch to an alternate refrigerant.

When Dometic set out to develop a totally new self-contained marine air conditioning unit, the engineering team embarked on a massive R&D effort to re-engineer every component, from the inside out, using Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles.

The engineering team went to work developing alternative designs and testing prototypes in Dometic’s computer-controlled automated parametric test lab, where they can alter components and operating conditions to test for efficiency. WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Getting the properly sized system for your boat requires more than providing cabin dimensions. Elements such as architectural design and cabin function affect system performance and BTU requirements.
Look for an air conditioning system that is sized properly for your boat’s dimensions, architectural features, and region of travel.
An air conditioning system that is too small will have long and frequent run times that drain electrical power. An air conditioning system that is too large will have run times too short to provide effective dehumidification. Work with a manufacturer or installation professional that can accurately interpret all the factors that add load to your cooling system, such as:

A split system has the air conditioning components split between two separate units. The two units are installed in different locations and connected by insulated copper tubing through which the refrigerant travels. A chilled water system can air condition many cabins using a water loop instead of refrigerant between the chiller and the air handlers. It consists of a chiller, located in the engine room, that cools (or heats) fresh water, which is pumped through an insulated piping loop out to air handlers located in the living spaces, where the cabin air is cooled (or heated). Cruisair and Marine Air chiller systems can be configured to provide capacities of 16,000 to 2.88 million BTUs. These systems offer flexible load management and reduced peak electrical load.

HOW TO BE SMART WITH YOUR GENERATOR Why You Should Avoid Oversized Generators
To prevent long-term degradation, large generators driven by diesel engines require constant monitoring by a special system that makes sure they operate at or above 60% capacity. If the amperage load is below this point, the monitoring system switches in a dummy load called a “load bank” (typically seawater-cooled heaters) to draw current from the generator and basically discard it into the seawater as heat.
A better choice is to choose a generator that is correctly sized. Because the air conditioning system’s compressor startup creates one of the boat’s largest electrical loads, the size of the generator is largely determined by that power demand. This can be significantly reduced, however, if a SmartStart (for single-phase power) or a VFD (for 3-phase power) is used in conjunction with the air conditioning system.
Although this increases the load above the minimum threshold, it is obviously not energy efficient since the generator is burning more fuel to produce more power that is simply being discarded by the dummy load. Fuel is burned so amps can be wasted.
The generator can be sized smaller, thus reducing the size of the load bank and reducing overall fuel consumption.
Since you rely on your generator to power all your electrical devices, you might think bigger is better. In fact, right-sizing your generator is a far better strategy than oversizing.

3 WHAT TO LOOK FOR Look for systems that are designed to minimize noise through the use of vibration-isolation mounting points, quieter compressors, compressor sound shields, and enclosed blower motors.

Noise is any sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired. It’s not something you want to have on your boat. Noise has detrimental effects on humans, creating hearing loss, irritation, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, and stress. Noise also has detrimental effects on marine life, and noise vibrations from inside your boat are easily transmitted into the water.
