This week... From the editor My fortunate, sun-kissed childhood was spent growing up in Queensland where the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast were our family’s regular holiday playgrounds, in the distant days before high-rise buildings cast long shadows across the shimmering sands. This largely shaped my definition of beaches – sweeping arcs of pale golden sand fringed by dazzling aqua waves curling and crashing towards the shore, delivering temporary white ribbons of lacy foam in their wake. So imagine my bewilderment when, as a recent migrant to Canberra in my early 20s, I took my first day trip to Batemans Bay and beheld the smaller, rockier and less golden beaches of the NSW South Coast. Moreover, it was October and the water was freezing! It was a beach, but not as I knew it. Fast forward a few years and a deep appreciation for beaches of all kinds had grown within me, especially small secluded crescents littered with shells and seaweed, book-ended by rocky outcrops and edged by sparkling sapphire waters. These days, I love heading east for a refreshing dip and invigorating walks along pristine shorelines, a far cry from the Gold Coast of my youth. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend away at the NSW Sapphire Coast with friends, the radiant heat of a slow combustion wood heater and bushwalks by the sea. - Julie Samaras

news Reusable coffee cups return to Canberra cafés As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, Canberra cafés have slowly begun accepting reusable cups again, albeit under strict conditions. General manager of Australian not-for-profit initiative, Responsible Cafés, Jo Horsley told Canberra Weekly that cafés can safely administer reusable cups where several measures relating to general cleanliness are in place. Ms Horsley cited a recent report co-signed by 125 scientists saying they are “supporting reuse and fighting back on the plastics industry for using this [pandemic] to their benefit”. “We don’t want to pressure cafés into feeling unsafe. The main thing is that there are ways around this,” she said. “Our three calls to action are always make sure your cup is clean; encourage café to establish contactless pour method on counter where they can place cup; if a café is still
not accepting reusable cups, we’re encouraging consumers to go topless – plastic lids are unnecessary.” Ms Horsley said while many cafés have chosen to offer compostable disposable cups, unless they go to a commercial composting waste facility these will end up in landfill. In July 2017, Frankies at Forde became the first Canberra café to stop using disposable coffee cups altogether, but general manager Mark Ramsay said that once COVID-19 restrictions began in March, disposables were reintroduced “as a business survival mechanism”. Mr Ramsay was happy to start accepting reusable cups again once there were no active cases of COVID-19 in Canberra, with strict safety measures in place for staff and customers. Sustainability Manager at Local Press Wholefoods in Kingston, Olivia
St-Laurent, said they have been accepting reusable cups at both of their premises for the past few weeks at the request of customers. Earlier in the pandemic, Ms St-Laurent said Local Press had noticed a particularly strong uptake in the ACT Government endorsed Green Caffeen program; a reusable cup-swapping program where customers sign up via an app, use and return the cups free of charge to any participating café. “It was the next best alternative,” she said. Ms St-Laurent said Green Caffeen was “great during COVID”, as Local Press were able to set up a bin where customers would drop their cups to be washed, and then be given their coffee in fresh, cleaned ones. At ONA Coffee, they began accepting reusable cups again on 16 May.
As Canberra’s premier sports and indoor entertainment venue, over its 39-year lifespan the AIS Arena, or ‘The Palace’ as it’s affectionately known, has hosted an array of events. Since opening on 26 January 1981, it’s hosted sold-out crowds for the Canberra Cannons back in their 1980s glory days, right through to erupting in March this year when the UC Capitals won their back-to-back WNBL title. But despite the fond memories, The Palace has been deemed no longer fit for general use, let alone royalty. After $9.4 million of restorative work was undertaken in 2016 to rejuvenate the facility, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) say more repairs are now required. Having been closed since midMarch due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ASC announced on Monday 29 June that they “do not anticipate” the AIS Arena will reopen in 2020. “To minimise impact on customers, we are intending to 8

cancel existing 2020 bookings and are not taking any new bookings,” an ASC statement read. On 30 June, ACT Sports Minister Yvette Berry told ABC Radio Canberra the announcement came as a “complete surprise” to the ACT Government. “The Federal Government knows that the facility, the ACT has to deliver all kinds of different events and sports games … I just can’t say how disappointed I am,” she said. “Of course, we’re going to have to talk with the community here in the ACT and sports organisations about alternative venues now,” Ms Berry said. The AIS Arena’s current major tenants are Giants Netball, who were slated to play one home game there for the 2020 season, and the UC Capitals. During the WNBL season, the Caps split their home games between the AIS Arena and the National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC). UC Capitals general manager Lucille Bailie told Canberra Weekly the announcement has an “immediate

AIS Arena to close ‘indefinitely’
The policy across all ONA venues is that they do not accept dirty cups, staff use hand sanitiser before and after handling reusable cups, and customers are encouraged to participate in swap-cup programs. ONA marketing manager, Jordan Montgomery, said although use of disposable products increased at the height of the pandemic, general trade was 80% lower than normal across their venues and wholesale business – resulting in low net consumption of disposable items. At the same time, ONA observed a “huge surge” in online home orders to the tune of a 300% increase in March and April. “More people than ever were preparing their coffee at home,” Mr Montgomery said. “For every person ordering a 200g bag of coffee for home, it probably saved about 10 single use cups from going into a bin.” - Denholm Samaras
On 4 March, the AIS Arena hosted the UC Capitals’ championship win before a full house.
and immense” impact on their business as they plan toward the 2020-21 WNBL season. “It’s a major piece of our puzzle and planning that we have venues available to play matches … We’ve got a major logistical and operational issue,” she said. Ms Bailie said the Caps are “hustling and liaising” with the ACT Government, the WNBL and AIS Arena to find a solution. “The NCCC is not just for basketball games so there’s limitations on it … we used to play in front of 100-200 people
in Tuggeranong and Belconnen, but those days have long passed us by.” She said given the team is committed to playing in Canberra, now is an ideal time to talk about establishing dedicated premises for the UC Capitals. “Our business is so healthy, we’re winning, we’re overdelivering on government and sponsor return on investment … it’s entirely appropriate for us to say, ‘can we talk about a high-performance training and playing facility?’,” Ms Bailie said. - Denholm Samaras

cover story Local dog food reducing your global paw print Alison Kirk-Lauritsen is a lot of things, an entrepreneur, an advocate, a doggo-mum – but above all, she’s inspiring. After spending the past eight years working on and off in the Antarctic and seeing the climate impact firsthand, Alison decided to make a difference. “Of course, the climate is changing everywhere but it was just really stark to me in this pristine, remote wilderness that is largely untouched by humans,” she said. “It’s actually not untouched by humans because what I am doing at home is having a huge effect on the landscape and animals.” A few years and a lot of research later, she is the proud owner of Feed for Thought – a sustainable pet food company, making dog treats out of insect protein, based right here in the capital. Her zero-waste business model is simple: she breeds larvae, feeds them organic waste that would otherwise go to landfill, and uses their protein, rather than meat products, to make dog treats. All this to combat the 22% of greenhouse gas

emissions caused by organic waste in landfill and animal agriculture. “If you think about the protein in dog food, often it is mixed meats from what humans don’t eat,” she said. “In that sense it is kind of sustainable, but in my dream world we would be eating less meat and chucking out less meat.” Her dog treats contain other wholefoods including rice, potato and rosemary extract. Also adopting compostable packaging, Alison’s customer focus is the love for your dog, as well as the environment. “I am not going for a person who wants to buy bulk treats at the cheapest price because I can’t produce these for that; I am literally handmaking them at the moment,” she said. “All dog foods are going to say they are good for your dog so that is almost lost in the white noise. “When someone puts two brands up against each other and they are both good for your dog, but one is good for the environment too – that’s what I’m going for.”

With the return of The Big Issue, vendor Claire is looking forward to a better quality of life and can’t wait to get back to her spot at the Lyneham shops. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
The Big Issue’s big return The Big Issue returned to the streets on Monday, bringing an end to a three-month COVIDrelated-hiatus that’s cost vendors their income, community connection, social engagement
and a sense of purpose and worthiness that comes from having a job. For local vendor Claire, it’s a welcome return to work at the Lyneham shops, where she felt

supported by the community and local business. “It’s a very kind area,” she said. “They make me feel wanted and necessary.” Claire has been selling The Big Issue for around a year; she works from 10am to 5pm most days and sells around 10 magazines a day, which, she said, keeps her sane. “It gives me money and purpose,” Claire said. “We all need to do something, and this is something I can feel proud of.” The Big Issue business model was developed in the UK by the founders of The Body Shop. Vendors buy stock at $4.50 per magazine and sell them for $9. The structure is designed for vendors to develop business skills while they earn a living so they can move on and do other things in life. Forced out of a Melbourne Anglicare group home at 16, Claire remained homeless for 35
years while she battled poverty, addiction, and poor mental health. As in intersex woman, she said she was turned away from both male and female shelters and forced to sleep rough. She said she felt abandoned and rejected from society. Claire moved from state to state looking for a place that would accept her and said although it’s not perfect, Canberra is that place. “I kept thinking, surely it will be better at the next place,” she said. “Surely I can find a place where they will let me be me.” Claire’s next big ambition is to write her own story. “Telling my story is the only way I will ever really heal,” she said. “Everybody suffers and everybody goes through pain. “Remember your pain and the next time you see someone in the streets, look at that person and just wonder what theirs is.” - Cassandra Power

news Celebrating Indigenous culture Although official NAIDOC Week celebrations, originally scheduled for 5-12 July, have been postponed due to COVID-19, several events will still proceed this month to bring the community together. Co-Chair of the National NAIDOC Committee, John Janke, said the decision to postpone NAIDOC Week was not taken lightly but was done so to protect the most vulnerable in the community, including elders and those with chronic health issues. The Week has been rescheduled to 8-15 November, at which time Mr Janke said it is hoped the virus will be under greater control and there will be fewer restrictions on social gatherings. Reflecting on NAIDOC Week, he said the event continues to grow each year, with more diverse individuals and communities becoming involved. He noted that Black Lives Matters has been a catalyst for people to ask questions of themselves and their history, with a “growing hunger to learn about Indigenous history”. “Even here in Canberra, the history of the local Ngunnawal and Ngambri people, what were we
taught about them?” Mr Janke said. “Why haven’t we been taught that history? We should be.” “I think there is always an apprehension to learn about Indigenous culture,” he said. However, there is plenty to be gained from learning about the Indigenous history of Australia including the language, ceremony, culture and tradition. Mr Janke said he hopes that when NAIDOC Week is held in November, the wider community will “come along and share the culture” as the celebrations are for everyone. In the interim, some communities and organisations are still acknowledging the original July dates for NAIDOC with a variety of digital events. Locally, an ACT Community Sector NAIDOC Week event will be held via Facebook Live and YouTube on Tuesday 7 July 11am-12.30pm. Participating community sector organisations will be hosting a live stream Q&A session, facilitated by Dan Bourchier from the ABC, with local community members to discuss the meaning and importance of

Aboriginal culture to them, with particular focus on this year’s theme: ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. This will be coupled with a combination of live and pre-recorded interviews and performances from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, interspersed with contributions of videos/creative pieces, on this year’s theme, from the local community. The National NAIDOC Committee has also partnered with the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) for the Run Sweat Inspire Festival. Participants can register to run or walk a virtual 2km march, 5km, 10km, half marathon or full marathon distance across the week of 5-12 July. Funds raised from the event will go directly to the IMF to continue its work in developing and championing Indigenous leaders and assisting communities to adopt healthier and more active lifestyles across Australia. Year five students Ellie, Tara and Allegra show us the ropes. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
CGGS jumps rope with some serious heart Year five students at Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) picked up their skipping ropes last week, on 26 June, for the annual Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart ‘Jump Off’ day.
As at Tuesday 30 June, the students had raised over $12,000 for the Heart Foundation, a cause which is close to their hearts. The school community lost their chaplain, Reverend David
Willsher, when he suffered a heart attack last year. Dr Willsher’s wife, current school chaplain Reverend Jenny Willsher, said the community has rallied around her, and the students’ commitment to Jump Rope for Heart’s cause is indicative of their enthusiasm and generosity. “It’s just symbolic of the Girls Grammar community and that they’re just a generous, loving, supporting community,” she said. “And I know David was not sick, he didn’t have symptoms or anything; his death was really sudden. I think that was probably a reality check for all of them, that life is a gift.” The students have been hard at work over the term, collecting donations and, of course, practising their skipping. Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator and year five teacher Richard Bond said Dr Willsher had been on the students’ minds as they worked through the program.
“The students have still had a lot of fun skipping and learning tricks, but this also brought home to them why we should take good care of our hearts,” he said. “It opened conversations about why it’s so important to find new ways to prevent and treat heart disease.” The students worked together in groups to come up with a skipping routine to showcase at the Jump Off, and CGGS student Ellie said the goal was to “have fun” while supporting the important work of the Heart Foundation. “I find it’s very nice that the Heart Foundation does this for people, because my dad had a heart attack four years ago,” she said. “We included everyone’s ideas [into our routine] and made sure everyone could do the moves. I think we had lots of fun and our aim was to have lots of fun with it.” - Libby Kimber

These include the Commonwealth-funded GP Respiratory Clinics. One young person who is being supported through this outreach program is living at risk of homelessness and is currently embarking on a recovery program to break the cycle of unhealthy behaviour. Stacks of snacks This week, food writer Libby Kimber brings you some snack recipes to keep you going throughout the workday.
Recipe courtesy of KOJA | koja.com.au Pita chips Wholegrain pita bread Extra virgin olive oil Smoked paprika and salt, to sprinkle (optional)
Peanut butter oat bars
Chunky guacamole dip
Image and text from Snack Power by Tiffiny Hall, photography by Brent Parker Jones,
1 spring onion stem, chopped
Murdoch Books RRP $32.99.
Half a tomato, finely diced
1 ripe avocado
Prep: 20 mins
Line a rectangular baking tin with baking paper.
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Cook: 2 mins
Place all of the ingredients except the chocolate in a food processor and blitz until the mixture comes together, scraping down the side as you go. The mixture should stick together when pressed with your hands. If the mixture is too dry, add water a teaspoon at a time. If it’s too wet, add an extra tablespoon of oats.
2 tsp coriander or flat leaf parsley, chopped
Makes 12 80g (1/2 cup) pitted medjool dates 100g (1 cup) rolled oats (use brown rice or quinoa flakes if gluten-free) 90g (1/3 cup) peanut butter 1 ripe banana 50g butter, melted 30g dark chocolate (70%)
Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and press down gently so it’s evenly spread out. Place in the freezer for at least 1 hour to set. Once set, remove from the freezer. Roughly chop the chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each time, until melted and smooth. Drizzle the chocolate all over the chilled mixture and return to the freezer for a few minutes to set. Once the chocolate has set, carefully remove from the tin and slice into 12 bars. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Pita chips and guacamole
canberraweekly.com.au
Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime Preheat oven to 220˚C. Place pita bread triangles on a baking tray and brush with olive oil. Sprinkle with a little smoked paprika and a pinch of salt if you choose. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes or until crispy. Leave to cool completely before storing in an airtight container. The pita chips will keep for 3-4 days. Whilst the pita bread is in the oven, make the guacamole: mash avocado in a bowl with the back of a fork. Add chopped spring onion, diced tomato, extra virgin olive oil and coriander or parsley. Mix well and finish with lemon or lime juice.
Easy banana bread
I’m vegan!
Recipe by Jamie Silva for Califia Farms. 3-4 ripe bananas, mashed
1 tsp baking soda
1/3 cup coconut sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup oat barista blend milk
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup neutral oil (avocado, grapeseed, coconut)
Optional add-ins
1 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
Chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 9x5 inch loaf pan with baking paper, making sure the parchment is hanging over the sides of the loaf pan. This will help you easily remove the loaf after baking. Spray with non-stick spray and set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the mashed bananas, coconut sugar, oat milk, oil, and vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined. Slowly fold in the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon (and optional add-ins, if using) until just combined, being careful not to over mix. The mixture should be slightly thick and lumpy. Pour the mixture into the loaf pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the centre of the loaf comes out clean. Let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Canberra-based artist Krystal Hurst named NATSIAA finalist Canberra-based Indigenous artist and jewellery maker, Krystal Hurst, has once again been named a finalist for the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), after receiving her first finalist nomination for the prestigious award in 2019. As was the case last year, Hurst will be the ACT’s sole representative out of the 65 finalists named in April. Widely regarded as Australia’s most prestigious and longest running Indigenous art awards, Hurst told Canberra Weekly “it was such a surprise” and “really amazing” to be named a finalist for a second year in a row. Part of the awards is an exhibition, which will be exhibited at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, for which all finalists produce a work. Hurst’s NATSIAA artwork was inspired by years of reflection on her elders and ancestors. “With this piece I really wanted to think of ways I can honour them and pay tribute to the matriarchs who have done so much for our
communities on the Mid-North Coast,” she said. Hurst explained that the shells, pipis and seaweed beads that adorn her work represent a connection to the ocean while also saying something “very empowering and honouring” about her ancestors. “I grew up hearing so many stories relating to our communities and relatives how they grew up through the mission days when their lives were controlled through The Aborigines Protection Act. “Thinking about how those policies have impacted culture and practice, I guess that’s where my lens and focus is,” she said. Hurst said the experience of participating in the awards last year was “one of the best” she has been part of. “Going up to Darwin, being immersed in whole exhibition was amazing, as well as getting to meet all the artists and curators. “There’s just something so special and powerful I see expressed through Indigenous arts, different mediums and different ways of telling stories,” she said. Having been based in Canberra for over 10

Book talk: non-fiction Jeff Popple reviews three interesting Australian non-fiction books for winter reading. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Staying Alive by Kate Gregorevic Macmillan, $34.99
The COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted the vulnerability of older people to disease. In Staying Alive, Kate Gregorevic draws on her extensive experience as a physician and geriatrician to look at how we can better manage the major diseases that impact upon us as we grow older. By the time we turn 60, most of us will still have a third of our lives to live. It is important, therefore, to be healthy to enjoy these years well. This book provides great advice on how to use lifestyle strategies to enhance our health and quality of life. A valuable and very timely book.
The Last Navigator by Paul Goodwin and Gordon Goodwin Allen & Unwin, $32.99
Gordon Goodwin died in 2012 after a fascinating life that took him from the Queensland bush to flying bombers during World War II to a successful career at Qantas. Drawing upon his father’s unpublished memoir and verbal accounts of his experiences, Paul Goodwin has written an engrossing account of Gordon’s life. The stories of his wartime experiences contain a wealth of information about the Pathfi nder planes that guided the Allied bombers into Germany, but it is the recalling of his harsh childhood during the Depression which is the most revealing. An illuminating insight into some dark periods of Australian history.
Enid by Robert Wainwright Allen & Unwin, $32.99
Enid Lindeman was the controversial heir to the Hunter Valley wine fortune created by her grandfather, Henry Lindeman. Married off at 21 to a much older wealthy American, who she hardly knew, Enid left Australia in 1913 and went onto to live an extraordinary life that saw her married and widowed four times before she died in 1973. She drove ambulances during World War I, hid escaping allied soldiers during World War II, entertained European and Hollywood royalty at her villa in the Riviera, including John F. Kennedy and Frank Sinatra, and spent two great fortunes. It is a fascinating story told very well by the always entertaining Robert Wainwright.

In 1985, a youthful babysitter stumbles across a creature feeding on a little girl. In the present, the rebellious young Ben (John-Paul Howard) is sent to visit his father at his maritime home during his parents’ divorce. Soon, Ben’s neighbour returns home from a trip in the woods with a dead deer, and a strange creature emerges from the corpse. Changelings (creatures who mimic others and take over their lives) have appeared in recent movies such as the excellent The Hole in the Ground (2019). Inspired by Roald Dahl’s The Witches and their own experience with their parents’ divorce, writer-directors the Pierce Brothers drew upon folklore legends such as Black Annis and the Boo Hag of the Appalachian Mountains to come up with their creature. The Pierces attempted
to depict the duality children see in their parents while divorcing in a moral story highlighting the dangers of living a life of apathy and distraction at the cost of family. The cinematography is creepy and sombre, enhancing the natural atmosphere of the woods. The practical FX add to the retro feeling of the movie, in line with the nostalgic Stranger Things. Like Rear Window, Ben is the only one aware of the happenings next door. However, the movie plays its concept extremely straight, leaving no room for doubt as to Ben’s perspective. Verdict: While resembling a solid retro ‘creature-of-the-week’ episode of The X-Files, The Wretched offers nothing new to the genre. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net The Wretched is currently screening in Foxtel Store and will be available to rent On Demand from 2 September via multiple platforms.

Alongside their full-service suite of beauty therapies and treatments, Elegant Image are excited to announce their two latest offerings: micro-needling and plasma pen (fibroblast) therapy. “Microneedling is a good treatment for fine lines and wrinkles,” explains Melissa. “It’s a good way to do a light resurfacing of the face – it doesn’t go very deep into the skin – the idea is to get the skin to heal itself.” She says micro-needling stimulates collagen production to
treat skin concerns such as acne scars, stretch marks and sun spots, while the fibroblast therapy works to tighten the skin and improve tone and texture on any part of the body. “The fibroblast is a really good option for an ‘eyelift’ or for wrinkles from the ageing process, or to take lines off from around the lips,” Melissa says. “It costs less than surgery, you can get similar results, and you cannot be over-tightened.” Melissa and the close-knit Elegant Image team – Keryn Franklin, Daniela Saklamaev and Patricia Lyons – have over 50 years’ combined experience in the beauty industry, and continually work to stay up to date with the latest treatments and products. “The level of professionalism,

Are you sober curious? Alcohol is ingrained in our culture as a way of relaxing, celebrating and having a good time. It can also become a crutch that we rely on to switch off and unwind or combat social anxiety. It wasn’t just toilet paper we hoarded at the onset of COVID-19 – sales of alcohol also went through the roof, suggesting that when times get tough we may lean a little too heavily on the comfort of a drink to numb stress and emotional pain. Despite our love of a drink, there is also a growing movement of people choosing to have a break from alcohol in order to feel better. What about you? Have you ever considered having a break from alcohol? With Dry July kicking off
for another year (also ‘dry-ish’ July for those wanting to just dip their toe in the water), now might be the time to reboot your relationship with alcohol. Apart from not waking up with a hangover, what else might you notice if you have a break from alcohol? More energy, better sleep Alcohol interrupts the sleep cycle; it can help you fall asleep but then causes an interrupted sleep that’s of poor quality. Better mental health Whilst in the short-term you might notice you feel more relaxed after a drink, there is a clear link between long-term heavy drinking and increased prevalence of both anxiety and depression. Better skin As alcohol dehydrates the body, it impacts every cell but is especially noticeable for making the skin and eyes look dull.
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com
Weight loss The empty calories in alcohol provide no nutritional value to your body but those calories do need to be burnt off. If you’re wanting to lose weight, then having a break from alcohol can really help. Less inflammation and less pain Removing alcohol from the diet is one of the keys to tackling chronic inflammation which is linked to myriad health issues including joint pain, gut irritation, poor immune health and more. Many people who embark on an intended short break from alcohol report that it isn’t nearly as hard as they thought, and they even feel so much better that they make it a permanent choice. If you are sober curious, there are even zero-alcohol beers and even fancy alcohol-free ‘spirits’ to help you give it a try. For more information, check out dryjuly.com and pregnantpause.com.au

Kids paintings Project and image courtesy of Spotlight What you’ll need Assorted ‘Semco’ acrylic paint Paint brushes Water Plastic tablecloth Paint palette
Method Decide on background colours for each canvas and paint on with a large paint brush. Allow to dry and repeat with a second coat to get a solid background colour. Ensure you paint around the edges of the canvas too for a neat finish. Once paint is dry, lightly draw design for each painting on the canvas using a pencil. Paint the base colours for each design – pink for the watermelon, orange for the orange and biscuit colour for the cone shape. Repeat with a second coat if needed and allow to dry. Once paint is dry you can start to paint the details on your designs, the watermelon rind and seeds, orange segments and ice cream scoops. Again allow to dry before applying another coat of paint. Once all paint is dry, your painting is ready to hang.

Go vertical When laid vertically, timber lining can create the illusion of height and grandeur, especially when fringing a design feature. A striking fi replace or large windows can be perfectly framed with timber lining, making them a focal point of a living space. Minimal furnishings and a neutral design palette make the home feel even more elegant and spacious. Rather than the bold, colourful accent walls of the early 2000s, today’s accent wall is all about tone and texture such as timber. Photo: Stuart James Pty Ltd.
Trend alert: timber accents Accent walls are touted to be one of the biggest interior design trends in 2020 but rather than the bold, colourful walls of the early 2000s, today’s accent wall is all about tone and texture. In addition to a resurgence in exposed bricks, designers are turning to timber lining as a way
of adding visual interest. Whether using as a feature wall or throughout the home, timber adds warmth and can provide a look that is both organic and elegant. Here, Boral Timber shares their top three tips on how to embrace the timber trend.
2
Keep it natural and sustainable Showcase a modern twist on midcentury style using genuine timber lining. Exposed timber walls save time and money on painting and exude a warmth and style that no other surface can replicate. The natural character of Australian hardwood is perfect for making bedrooms feel cosy while adding a retro-inspired aesthetic. As with all natural materials, it’s important to better understand
the origin of the products being selected for any project. Not only are hardwoods a renewable resource, Boral timber lining products are Responsible Wood Chain of Custody certified, providing peace of mind that the timber is sourced from sustainably-managed and legal forestry.
3
Mix and match textures When designing spaces with minimal styling, consider a combination of textures to defi ne each room. Timber lining provides a neutral backdrop that can be layered with other materials, such as black aluminium, glass and concrete, with great design effect. Timber can even be used in the bathroom or laundry, away from direct exposure to running or pooling water, with appropriate fi nishes to seal and protect the surface from atmospheric moisture.

in the garden
This week in the garden • Winter is the ideal time to plant and transplant deciduous trees, shrubs, berry canes and similar, as they are dormant and stress is kept to a minimum. Ensure plant is in good health before moving and that the new site is well prepared.
• Winter is a suitable time for pruning many deciduous trees and shrubs as they are dormant and it is easier to view the structure of the tree. Before getting started, you need to know specific cultural information, such as, whether flowers or fruit develops on new or old wood, and is seasonal pruning even necessary. • Check soils after rainfall for any areas which are dry or possibly water repellent. Over time, soils can become compacted, particularly if they are exposed to the elements and walked on regularly. You can alleviate this by aerating with a garden fork, incorporating organic matter, giving a thorough water, and applying a new layer of mulch. • In readiness for the spring growing season, apply organic
matter such as manures and compost to hungry garden beds. Avoid high phosphorous products if growing sensitive plants such as Australian natives or proteas. • Apply comfrey tea and seaweed solution to winter veggies to keep them actively growing and more resilient to winter cold and pest outbreaks. Products such as these are great soil conditioners, encouraging microbial activity and busy, happy worms. Comfrey tea contains a wide range of nutrients and minerals including nitrogen, silica, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium (helps strengthen plant cell walls against frost damage). • Popular edibles rhubarb and asparagus can be planted out or

Weekly market wrap Canberra market sees strong results in June
Questions for HomeBuilder after high levels of interest
On Saturday 27 June, Canberra recorded an 89% preliminary auction clearance rate, achieving the highest capital city result nationally for the second week in a row. June was a particularly strong month for auction results, achieving an average preliminary clearance rate of 75.75% across the month. Results improved as the month progressed, indicating strong underlying buyer demand. The number of established properties advertised for the first time on Allhomes has remained low since the week to 3 April. This was a logical cut-off for vendors to decide to either wait for restrictions on open homes and public auctions to be relaxed or push their property to market as they had already invested time and money into preparations. Last week saw a sharp increase in listing activity with 137 established properties advertised for the first time on Allhomes, the highest result since April. New listing activity has bobbed up and down during June averaging 117.5 listings per week. Those considering selling established properties, especially houses, still enjoy little competition across Canberra. This has created some exceptionally strong sales results from $750,000 to $1,000,000.
In the new market, buyers initially perceived the HomeBuilder Grant as a fantastic benefit to buy. This was evidenced by a flood of new enquiries, anticipating receiving $25,000 for buying their new home. A glaring flaw in Treasury’s HomeBuilder FAQ (which at the time of writing had last been updated on 18 June) is it fails to accommodate a significant proportion of the market who need their new home in three to six months. These buyers would very happily buy a new property, in turn supporting the construction industry, however, will either delay their decision or buy established properties due to the narrow defi nitions within Treasury’s FAQ sheet. If the ACT Government chooses to join Tasmania, SA, WA and the NT and sign on to the HomeBuilder National Partnership, they should strongly consider using their discretionary powers to provide $25,000 to eventual owner occupiers purchasing all new properties. This encourages consumers to build or buy a new home, irrespective of its current stage of completion.
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Higher sales volumes encourage property developers to increase investment and either bring forward or expand development pipelines, resulting in retention and creation of jobs for construction workers and the collective of associated industries that contribute collectively to the construction and development of new homes. The 2019 calendar year saw a large proportion of multi-unit sites offered for sale by the ACT Government fail to sell. A number of these being offered for the second time include Braddon Place, Macarthur on Northbourne, plus multiple medium-density sites in Taylor. As the primary seller of land suitable for multi-unit development, the ACT Government benefits from broader application of HomeBuilder Grants by increasing buyer demand to sell out projects faster; a larger pool of potential buyers is created for multi-unit development sites currently for sale.
Housing stress worsens under pandemic Data from the Australian National University (ANU) suggests the number of Australians who have been unable to pay their rent or mortgage on time has more than doubled since the pandemic began. In a survey of over 3,200 people, the study found the number of people not being able to meet regular payments for housing costs increased from 6.9% in April to 15.1% in May. According to the study’s co-author, Professor
Matthew Gray, the level of housing stress is “substantially higher” for renters than for mortgage holders. “What’s also worrying is that young adults are experiencing very high rates of housing stress, with 44% of people aged 18 to 24 years unable to pay their rent on time,” Professor Gray said. “Young Australians are still more likely to be in housing stress once income and socioeconomic status is controlled for, suggesting that there is
New sculpture for Googong The main entrance to Googong is now home to a seven-metre-tall sculpture, designed as a “nod to Googong’s local ecology and geology”. Googong Project Director, Malcolm Leslie, says he hopes the sculpture will be an “iconic and visual landmark” and will welcome residents and visitors to the township. “The sculpture marks the main entrance 42

to Googong and has been designed to acknowledge the foundations of the natural environment and embrace the ‘essence of the Monaro’ unique to the area,” he says. The sculpture incorporates rusted steel blades to mirror the shape of surface rock strikes and large arches to acknowledge the Monaro Ranges and the patination of the Golden Sun Moth.
more to housing stress than just income for this group. This is because their accumulated savings and wealth are likely to be low.” Professor Gray said policies from governments and banks to protect renters and mortgage holders unable to make payments were also examined under the study: 22.2% of mortgage holders have been successful in reducing or freezing their payments, compared to just over one in 10 renters.

Cottage charm Narrabundah 47 McIntyre Street This gem in the highly sought-after suburb of Narrabundah is being offered for sale for the first time in 30 years, having been lovingly maintained throughout the years. The three-bedroom cottage is bathed in natural light, and Peter Mylonas Property Solutions’ sales consultant, Ally Smith, says it is the perfect new home for a “young professional couple or family with children looking to build their dream home in a dream location”. “This property is located in a private cul-de-sac in a prime location, on the Griffith side of Narrabundah,” she says. “The property is only minutes from Narrabundah College, St Benedict’s Primary School, St Clare’s College, Canberra Grammar School, Red Hill School, St Bede’s Primary School, Narrabundah Playing Field – to the rear of property, accessed through a gate – and other various local parks.” Smith says it’s also in close proximity to a number of shopping and foodie hotspots: “an easy drive to Fyshwick Markets, Manuka shopping precinct, Griffith local shops and the Kingston Foreshore”. The home includes three bedrooms with built-in robes, a solar-heated inground swimming
pool and creature comforts such as split-system air conditioning and a slow combustion fireplace. The kitchen has been updated, and large French doors allow the sunshine to stream into the lounge. Smith says this delightful property offers lots of potential to those looking to create their dream home. “The house is a well-maintained older property that offers the astute buyer an opportunity to extend the existing home and create something really special,” she says. The home sits nestled amongst greenery on the large block, a suburban oasis. “The home is set back on a large private block,” Smith says, “and in spring and summer is camouflaged behind a sea of established green trees and garden”.

She might want to ditch everything for the excitement and passion of a completely new friendship or association but will need to tread carefully as this may not work out completely as expected. KOREAN PENINSULA Emma did her PhD looking at North and South Korea and speaks some Chinese and Korean. From its history, to politics and food, Emma says she feels a connection with Korea. She has been to North Korea four times and in her spare time runs a website that looks at humanitarian engagement with North Korea.
My favourite things JACKETS
Photo Kerrie Brewer
“I love a good jacket. I want to look smart for work but don’t want to think about what I wear.” Emma sticks to a simple palette of black pants and white or black top paired with a jacket in interesting fabrics or colours.
RADIO Growing up, Emma’s family had a radio in every room of the house and it is now a feature of her life. She has a radio on “nearly all of the time”, generally spoken word but increasingly podcasts. “I get a lot of information and knowledge from the radio,” she says. “I could survive anywhere as long as I have a radio.”
Dr Emma Campbell CEO ACTCOSS
Dr Emma Campbell is the CEO of the ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS), taking up the role in January this year. Emma has a dynamic and diverse work portfolio and a wealth of experience across academia, the community sector, international crisis responses, business and government sectors. Born in the United Kingdom, Emma’s mother is British while her father is Australian, from regional NSW. Emma came to Australia in 2008 to do a PhD at ANU. “I wanted to come to Australia and do something major because it’s always been an important part of my life” – and that turned into “building a life here in Australia and the ACT”. She says it has been a challenging time to join ACTCOSS as CEO starting in the role at the tail end of the bushfires, followed by hail and COVID-19. “That said, I’ve been able to develop relationships very quickly and understand the issues in the sector because of the closeness of the ACT community sector and professionalism of the - Allison Turnbull many organisations here.”
ANGEL OF THE NORTH Emma comes from the north east of England where the original Angel of the North is located. It is a sculpture that is “waiting for you when you come home. It guards the north east, protects the north east”. “I didn’t know there was a small Angel of the North in Canberra. I was running around the lake and came across it. It made me very happy.”
MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES While Emma has a PhD and is not a medical doctor, she has completed three missions with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), including in Swaziland (now Eswatini), Sierra Leone and Lebanon. “They are a special organisation because they reach people who would otherwise often have no access to even basic healthcare.”
