This week... From the editor This month is Plastic Free July; if only it were also Covid-free. Sigh. In recent years, I’ve taken steps to reduce the volume of single-use plastics in my life, eschewing barrier bags while grocery shopping, lugging along reusable shopping totes (one of which is 25 years old) and storing leftovers in reusable wraps/containers. When possible, I refill containers at the local bulk foods store, make my own almond milk, and choose ‘naked’ (unpackaged) products or those in recyclable containers over those in singleuse plastic packaging. Pandemic restrictions have made things a little more challenging, with disposable plastics often offered as the most hygienic option. Still, I continue to play my part, hoping it makes a difference and does more than just ease my conscience. Inside this edition, you’ll find my colleague Libby’s ‘Take 5’ interview with Plastic Free July founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (page 18) and tips for reducing single-use plastics in the bathroom (page 30). Reasons to be grateful this past week include quiet nights watching quality television and reading good books, sitting cosily with Mum’s hand-crocheted throw rug over my lap, a coffee catch-up with a coastal friend, the unveiling of sculptures by local artist Delene White at Tallagandra Hill to launch their We Love Local Festival, and all those continuing to work hard to keep our community safe in these extraordinary times. Take care, - Julie Samaras

news NSW tightens restrictions on pubs Restrictions on ACT hotels are expected to remain unchanged as NSW has introduced tighter regulations at pubs following the increasing number of COVID-19 cases linked to the Crossroads Hotel cluster at Casula in Sydney’s South-West. Venues will see their patronage capped at 300 regardless of size, while group booking numbers will be reduced from 20 to 10. Larger pubs will also require a fulltime marshal on duty to ensure a COVID-safe plan is being implemented, while smaller venues will only require a marshal during peak times. Patrons will also once again have to be seated to consume food and beverages, while collecting contact details of patrons will be mandatory. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the announcement

comes on the back of direct consultation with the AHA NSW branch. “Unfortunately, what they’ve told us is when you have more than 10 in a group booking in a pub or hotel setting, people are mingling and they shouldn’t be mingling,” Ms Berejiklian said. “We know from the health advice we’ve received from the beginning of the pandemic that indoor activity, where people aren’t seated is a huge health risk. It increases the chance of transmission.” The reimposition of these measures has been welcomed by publicans, who hope the restrictions can prevent the state re-entering another lockdown like Victoria. “There are so many of us that are on the brink of decimation I suppose,” Camden pub owner Steve Wisbey told ABC Radio

The proposed recommencement of flights between Australia and New Zealand would have been a big win for Canberra Airport, which has seen business plummet since COVID-19 restrictions began in Australia in late March. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Trans-Tasman travel bubble bursts ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the Trans-Tasman travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand is unlikely to go ahead in the next few months, after being postponed for consideration in National Cabinet last week. 6

Canberra Airport, in collaboration with the Australian Business Chamber, had previously submitted a proposal to recommence international travel between Canberra and the New Zealand capital, Wellington, by mid-July.

National’s AM on 14 July. “Closing and going into lockdown as per Melbourne would really see the end of a lot of us. “This lowering is still something that will allow us to turn a dollar, and to keep staff on and to keep going.” The new rules will not apply to NSW clubs, casinos and restaurants. “I personally think it should be done for everybody if it’s going to be done. This is where there have been issues in the past with not quite understanding government guidelines,” Mr Wisbey said. Owner of Royal Hotel Queanbeyan, Anthony McDonald, told ABC Radio Canberra’s Breakfast he’s supportive of the measures as public health and safety is “paramount”. He said the patron cap won’t affect his business given the Royal

Hotel has a 250-patron capacity under the one person per four square metre rule. However, the 10-patron booking limit will force The Royal to reschedule or cancel numerous reservations. “There was a major influx once we went from 10 to 20 (patrons per booking), the phone was ringing quite constantly. We’ll be having conversations with our punters today looking to push back or cancel a number of other functions,” he said. Since 19 June, ACT pubs have been restricted to 100 patrons per indoor or outdoor area, so long as the one person per four square metre rule is adhered to. Group bookings in the ACT have been capped at 20 people, and patrons can order at the bar but must be seated to consume their drinks or meals. - Denholm Samaras

Mr Barr said the proposal, which was set to hit National Cabinet last Friday 10 July, would need to be considered at a later date. “The National Cabinet was focussed on the Victorian situation on Friday. Consideration of travel bubbles was deferred to future meetings,” Mr Barr said. “Ultimately, this is a matter for the Australian and New Zealand Governments. It would appear unlikely to happen in the next few months though.” Canberra Airport has been pushing for the proposal since early June, opening an Expression of Interest portal on its website. The website saw over 3,000 registrations for the proposal within a week of its launch. Mr Barr said while restarting international travel between the two countries would have many benefits, the COVID-19 situation would have to come under control before it was considered. “It would create jobs and

boost spending in the respective economies. Aside from the economic benefits, the recommencement of flights would enable families to reconnect,” he said. “Stable low-level case numbers and no community transmission in either country (would be necessary). Ultimately though, this is a matter for the Australian Government and the New Zealand Government.” The proposal was originally submitted when both Canberra and Wellington were COVIDfree cities in early June; however, Canberra recorded five new active cases of the virus last week, between 8 and 10 July. New Zealand currently has 25 active cases in the country. The recommencement of flights would have been a big win for Canberra Airport, which had previously announced a 97% decrease in business since COVID-19 restrictions began in Australia in late March. - Danielle Meddemmen

Fresh snow fell on the NSW snowfields over the weekend, as demand for the popular holiday destination continues despite COVID-19 case spikes in Victoria and NSW. Image supplied.

Snow-goers rejoice with 85cm fresh snowfall School holiday snow-goers were not discouraged by wild weather in the NSW snowfields over the weekend, as 85cm of fresh snow had fallen on Thredo by Monday afternoon 13 July.

Thredo marketing manager, Caroline Brauer, said demand had not faltered for this snow season, as recent snowfall allowed the resort to open more terrain.

“It was so great to see the entire mountain transform into a winter wonderland again, with many happy skiers and snowboarders about,” she said. “Given the capacity restraints we’re implementing this winter to enable us to offer an environment where social distancing is possible, demand has been really strong. “Passes for the school holiday period sold out quickly this year and since we’ve been able to open more terrain with the snowfalls this week, we’ve been able to release more passes into the market which have sold through really well already.” The first weekend of the 2020 snow season kicked off on 22 June. Ms Brauer said recent spikes in COVID-19 cases across Victoria and parts of NSW served as a reminder for those visiting the resort. “It is definitely a timely reminder to all our guests that we are operating within a global

pandemic,” she said. “This is something we are constantly reminding our guests and employees and reinforcing the social distancing, hygiene and sanitisation measures we have rolled out across the resort for this winter.” The resort is functioning under its COVID Safe Operating Plan, which Ms Brauer said had been developed closely with the NSW Department of Health. “Our model includes capacity restraints of up to 50% usual capacity, lift line spacing measures, a limit of how many people can ride lifts together, the installation of sanitisation stations and reminder signage and messages delivered across the resort and across our digital channels,” she said. For those interested in visiting the resort, lift pass availability can be found at www.thredbo.com.au. - Danielle Meddemmen

news ‘Palace letters’ released “The country is set on a collision course of historic proportions.” – Sir John Kerr Sir John Kerr’s personal correspondence with the Queen in 1975 appears to lay out his constitutional right to sack Prime Minister Gough Whitlam but falls short of forecasting his decision to do so. A High Court ruling in May last year has allowed the so-called “Palace letters” to be made publicly available through the National Archives of Australia. The Archives Director-General David Fricker highlighted key passages of the correspondence, highlighting an escalating tension between the two men (Sir John Kerr and Gough Whitlam) - each gunning for the other’s job – while defending the Archives for withholding the letters for so long.

10

“I have been asked many times, ‘Why did it take a High Court decision? Surely they are public records?’,” Mr Fricker said. “But the letters were deposited to the Archives by Sir John Kerr in 1978 under agreement they would not be released without approval from the Palace. “They were the rules and those rules were later confirmed by the Federal Court.” The letters were kept from the public under a special provision when the Archives Act was passed in 1983, until the Federal Court ruling was overturned by the High Court, after a lengthy campaign for their disclosure by Professor Jenny Hocking. Mr Fricker thanked Professor

Hocking for her work and said while the pair were on opposing sides throughout the legal battle, “for good reason”, they never disagreed on the significance of the letters or the extent to which they might illuminate the public’s understanding of a tumultuous period in Australian political history. “I acknowledge the perseverance and dedication of Professor Jenny Hocking,” he said. “And the way in which she used the courts and institutions.” Mr Fricker urged people to read all 1,200 pages and to put the

letters into context. “We (the Archives) are not historians,” he said. “We provide the evidence upon which history can be contested. “History should be contested. “We need a world where we have several histories.” Mr Fricker also acknowledged the publication of these letters was made possible by Gough Whitlam’s decision to preserve government records and release them to the public when he created the National Archives in October 1975. - Cassandra Power

Local developer snaps up Northbourne site for $28 million Local property development company JWLand has secured the mixed-use Braddon Place site on Northbourne Avenue for $28 million. The Suburban Land Agency

confirmed the 15,607sqm site, Block 4 Section 60 in Braddon, had been sold to the property developer under the hammer in the agency’s first online auction. The site was previously home

to public housing along the Northbourne Avenue corridor, and comes with a requirement for 10 community housing and 80 affordable housing dwellings. The maximum dwelling yield for the site is 602, including the minimum 90 affordable dwellings. JWLand’s national head of development, Michael Prendergast, said the company would begin working with stakeholders in the coming months to “design a precinct that will complement the characteristics of this area”. “With construction commencing next year, this new development site will aid in stimulating the local economy with a further 2,000 jobs,” he said. “The Inner North apartment market is proven and has great diversity,” he said. “The area has matured and commands significant interest due to its proximity to the city, universities

and its surrounding café and bar culture.” Suburban Land Agency CEO John Dietz said the agency was working to ensure mixed use developments are a part of Canberra’s busy districts, and the sale of the Northbourne Avenue site would “contribute to Canberra’s good design”. “As part of the gateway to our city, it’s a wonderful opportunity for a liveable and vibrant place with quality public domain and buildings,” he said. “The city is growing rapidly and the commercial, residential and community opportunities of significant development sites are within fast growing urban areas in major commercial precincts.” The Suburban Land Agency hopes the sale of Braddon Place will bode well for the sale of the Macarthur on Northbourne site. The tender for the up to 424 dwelling site closes on 13 August.

Around 90 tourism industry representatives participated in the social distancing technology trial, with their lanyards vibrating to alert them when someone was closer than 1.5 metres. Image supplied.

Social distancing tech trial Technology to assist with social distancing has been trialled at an event at the National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC). The ‘smart e-badge’ technology was used at a Canberra Region Tourism Advisory Forum, where around 90 guests wore an event lanyard that alerted them when another person was within 1.5 metres. The e-badge was developed by Harry the Hirer, and ‘discreetly vibrates’ to alert the user when social distancing is not being

adhered to. NCCC general manager Stephen Wood said there is “great potential for this technology to assist in reinstating confidence for meeting planners and attendees looking to organise and attend events in Canberra”. “As one of the largest purpose-built meetings and events venues in Canberra, we’re thrilled to be trialling this technology for the first time in Australia,” he said.

Majority of Canberrans support drug testing Canberrans are generally smoking fewer cigarettes, drinking alcohol at safe levels and overwhelmingly supportive of drug and pill testing at designated locations, new data from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey of 2019 shows. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare survey has been conducted every three years since 1985 and looks at drug use and attitudes of Australians over the age of 14. The nationwide trend against tobacco use continues, with only one in 12 Canberrans smoking

cigarettes daily, but the use of roll-your-own tobacco and e-cigarettes has increased slightly. Cocaine use is at its highest level in almost two decades, with 4.2% of Australians using cocaine in the last 12 months. It has become Canberra’s second most popular illicit drug after cannabis. Around 10% of Canberrans report using cannabis and that level has not changed in the last 20 years. The report found smoking rates around the country increase with socioeconomic disadvantage, but illicit drug use is highest in the most advantaged areas.

You might know him as former Paralympian Michael Milton, but if you have ever been to Quizzic Alley in Fyshwick, you will definitely know him as Nearly Legless Mick. Now, in collaboration with his wife Penelope and the team at Quizzic Alley, the official Harry Potter merchandise store will get behind children’s literacy and sponsor the 2020 MS Readathon. Running across the month of August, children are encouraged to read as many books as they can while raising money for Multiple Sclerosis. Nearly Legless Mick said the team could not wait to merge their love for the magical book series and children’s literacy to support the cause. “One of the things Penni and I love about the theme is it is so booked based and it’s been such a rite of passage for many primary school kids to read their first big series of books,” he said. “There are a lot of kids who are very passionate about it, so if we can run some trivia nights, work with MS Readathon to engage the kids and read the Harry Potter

books, I think it is fantastic.” The Australian event already has over 30,000 registrations this year and has raised over $700,000. Nearly Legless Mick said the reading challenge couldn’t have come at a better time to encourage children to reengage with literature. “I think with the COVID-19 lockdown and things like that, obviously there is an increased amount of screen-time because most of the schooling was online based,” he said. “Then to switch them from a screen in the evenings and switch that into reading is particularly important at the moment.” Throughout the course of the challenge, children will have plenty to look forward to with online resources and prizes to be won. Nearly Legless Mick has even teamed up with the event and will hold a virtual reading of the Tales of Beedle and Bard on social media towards the end of July. Quizzic Alley will also host a virtual trivia night towards the end of August for MS Readathon participants.

“If you’re an English teacher, it probably sounds like a comprehension test but if you’re a kid it’s trivia, and it’s fun, and it’s a great way to add on to associated activities around reading books,” Nearly Legless Mick said. “The quiz is towards the end

of August after they have had a chance to read a book or two and most of our questions will be based on The Philosopher’s Stone.” Children can sign up to the MS Readathon through their school or online at msreadathon.org.au - Danielle Meddemmen

Rebecca Prince-Ruiz founded Plastic Free July in 2011, a grassroots movement that evolved into a global phenomenon. Photo: Tashi Hall.

Take 5: Rebecca Prince-Ruiz This month is Plastic Free July, and this week CW takes five with Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, the founder of the grassroots movement that started in 2011 and has since become a global phenomenon. She’s written a book, Plastic Free, alongside Joanna Atherfold Finn, about the movement, how it has grown, and why it’s still important.

18

How has Plastic Free July evolved since its first iteration in 2011? Plastic Free July has grown beyond anything I could imagine back in 2011. It was just a handful of people making an informal effort to reduce single-use plastics in their lives at a time when this wasn’t the topic of conversation it is now, and alternatives and solutions were difficult to find. Through sharing ideas and supporting each other, we found lots of solutions and the idea caught on and grew by word of mouth and online to become one of the world’s biggest environmental movements – it’s testimony to the power of grassroots change.

2

What’s on the horizon for Plastic Free July moving forward? Moving forward for Plastic Free July we would like to grow the awareness and uptake of the campaign to an even wider audience and get people

across Australia participating and together making a difference. Other future initiatives include developing materials for a plastic free schools challenge because July isn’t an ideal month for schools and we have so much interest from them, as well as translating our resources into other languages so that the diversity of the campaign reflects the diversity of our participants.

3

What would you like to see from governments with regards to the production and disposal of single-use plastics in Australia? I would like to see governments continue to introduce legislation such as container deposit schemes, which require extended producer responsibility for the lifetime of plastic packaging. They need to require minimum mandated recycled content in plastic packaging and other products; this sets a level playing field for business and also

supports the recycling industry. Alongside this, they should also consider banning particularly problematic plastic items such as plastic microbeads and polystyrene food packaging.

4

I think we’re only now just beginning to realise just how much of a throwaway society that we have become. In the 1950s we were taught how to throw away singleuse plastic items, and over the next 50 years the production and consumption grew so quickly it got to the point where we didn’t even notice it anymore. Over the last 10 years I think the plastic pollution crisis and the challenges facing our recycling industry have given us all a big wakeup call and we’re now just starting to realise the impact of

Raiders fall short

Canberra Capitals guard Maddison Rocci (pictured) has been announced in the Australian Opals squad for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The back-toback WNBL champion will join fellow caps players, Marianna Tolo and Kelsey Griffin, in the 23-player squad. The squad will begin preparation and training between 8 and 16 November, despite uncertainty around the FIBA Qualification window.

The Canberra Raiders have fallen short of a fourth victory in a row over the Melbourne Storm, going down 14-20 at GIO Stadium Canberra. The teams were level at 6-6 with 12 minutes to go in the first half when winger Bailey Simonsson was sent off after a controversial call, with the Storm scoring soon after. The Green Machine were again riddled with injury during the game, with hooker Josh Hodgson rupturing his ACL in a season-ending injury, while Simonsson injured his shoulder late in the game and is meeting with a surgeon later in the week.

Pork, ginger and lime sausage rolls Makes 48 3 sheets puff pastry, defrosted and cut in half 1 egg, lightly beaten with a little water Sesame seeds, for sprinkling Sausage filling

500g pork mince (the higher the fat content, the better) 60g (1/3 cup) grated onion, juice squeezed out 50g (1/3 cup) grated carrot 1 egg, lightly beaten

Entertain with style Cooking for family and friends? Don’t panic – food writer Libby Kimber brings you two recipes that will be a hit with everyone from MasterChef fan favourite Khanh Ong’s brand-new book.

30g (1/2 cup) panko breadcrumbs 2 spring onions, finely chopped Handful of coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 tsp grated ginger 2 Tbsp finely chopped makrut lime leaves 2 tsp sriracha chilli sauce 1 tsp light soy sauce 2 tsp fish sauce Zest and juice of 1/2 lime 1/2 tsp sea salt

A Gay Guy's Guide to Life, Love, Food by Khanh Ong, Published by Plum, RRP $34.99, Photography by Lauren Bamford.

1 tsp garlic powder

Malaysian beef rendang

Preheat the oven to 210°C. Line two baking trays with baking paper.

1 tsp ground white pepper

To make the filling, place all the ingredients in a large bowl and give it a really good mix to make sure everything’s well combined.

Serves 6 125ml (1/2 cup) melted coconut oil or vegetable oil

Place a rectangle of puff pastry on a clean work surface. Spoon about one-sixth of the filling close to the long edge of the pastry and shape it into a log. Brush the edge of the pastry with egg wash, then carefully roll it up tightly and seal.

1.5kg chuck steak, gravy beef or brisket, cut into bite-sized pieces 500ml (2 cups) canned coconut milk 3 Tbsp Malaysian curry powder 90g (1 cup) desiccated coconut 3 Tbsp karamel masakan Sea salt 6 makrut lime leaves, finely sliced Steamed rice, to serve Spice paste 6 dried red chillies, soaked in warm water for 15 minutes, then drained 2 lemongrass stalks, white parts roughly chopped, tops bruised and reserved 8 makrut lime leaves, finely sliced 3cm piece of fresh turmeric, roughly chopped or 2 tsp ground turmeric 5cm piece of galangal, roughly chopped 6 red shallots, roughly chopped 5 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 4 long red chillies, roughly chopped 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

To make the spice paste, place all the ingredients except the vegetable oil in a food processor or blender and whiz into a fine paste. Pour the vegetable oil into a large saucepan over medium-low heat and sauté the spice paste for 4–6 minutes until fragrant and the oil splits from the paste.

Brush the top of the sausage roll with the egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Cut into 8 even-sized pieces and place on one of the prepared baking trays. Repeat the process with the remaining pastry and filling to make 48 sausage rolls. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until puffed and golden.

In a large frying pan over high heat, place the coconut oil and beef and brown for about 8 minutes, turning often to get good caramelisation all over. Transfer the beef to the saucepan with the spice paste. Add the coconut milk, curry powder and reserved lemongrass tops and simmer for 3-3 1/2 hours until the beef is tender and the liquid has reduced by half. Give it a stir every now and again and add some water if it starts looking a bit dry. Meanwhile, toast the desiccated coconut in a dry frying pan over low heat for 5-7 minutes until golden brown. Add it to the pan with the beef and stir. Continue cooking for another 10 minutes, then stir through the karamel masakan and salt to taste. Finish with the lime leaves and serve over steamed rice. 23

Local brew embraces ‘paddock to pint’ philosophy Local brewer Tim Sides has embraced the ‘paddock to pint’ philosophy when brewing his local beers. Sourcing the grains themselves – including sorghum, millet and buckwheat – Tim and his wife Camille own Wild Polly Brewing Co, producing Canberra’s only gluten-free beers. “Coming from [a] farming background, it’s really important to me to know where my grain comes from,” says Tim. “So I’ve got those relationships with the growers.” After a caravanning trip around the country three years ago, Tim and Camille returned to their farm just outside of Canberra in Gundaroo with plans for a cellar-door-style beer offering, and, because their kids are coeliac, a gluten-free brewery was born. “It’s so hard to find gluten-free food or anything when you’re out and about,” Tim says, “so we thought how can we make our beer gluten-free?” Gluten-free beer is a bit of rarity with only a handful of Australian breweries taking it on. Tim says it is Wild Polly’s point of difference among the more than 500 small breweries in Australia, and while the process is “very hard work”, it’s almost

like returning beer to its ancient roots. “The original beers would’ve been made with [grains like] we’re using, but that would’ve been lost thousands of years ago,” Tim says. “So we’re really recreating the way beer was originally made, and transforming it into the modern variant of it.” Currently, Wild Polly’s two beers – a pale ale and an India pale ale (IPA) – are brewed out of Zierholz’s brewery in Fyshwick, with future plans for Wild Polly to be brewed out in Gundaroo with homegrown hops and a cellar-door-style taproom. Tim says there is a growing push to support local, and with the support of locals and independent bottle shops, Wild Polly has been well received by the Canberra and Yass Valley Shire communities, and has even picked up a few awards. “I think that’s a really important thing for people to be able to pick up on and consumers today want local, they want fresh, I think, and we’re able to provide that.” To find a stockist, visit wildpollybrewingco.com.au - Libby Kimber

Take 5: Abby Dobson of Baby et Lulu On Saturday 25 July, The Street Theatre will team up with local television production agency, Screencraft, and faux-French sensations, Baby et Lulu, to produce a live and livestreamed night previewing the band’s new record, Album Trois. CW spoke with one of Baby et Lulu’s vocalists, Abby Dobson, prior to their first live gig since the pandemic began. With seats at the venue sold out, you can still buy a ticket for the livestream at thestreetdigital.org.au

1

Will this be Baby et Lulu’s first ever live performance for both a physical and digital audience? Yes, it seems like The Street have a very beautiful production crew in place; it will be quite a team going to bring this to life. Hopefully it will be a wonderful thing to watch in your living room and everyone will get in the spirit; leave some brie on the counter for a few hours – you shouldn’t have cold French cheese – open a bottle of French wine and, since they’re not driving, really knock themselves out. We’re all excited; I haven’t done a show for months, none of us have. I’ve promised not to wear my tracksuit.

2

An Australian six-piece band performing in French is a unique proposition; tell me how the group came to be? It all started as an absolute folly; Lara and I thought we would do one show to get this French bug out of our system and didn’t have any idea people would be interested in it, but it turns out there’s a lot of Francophiles in Australia like us. We’ve been together 10 years now, and it’s just a very joyous show.

3

Given English is your first language, how do you find singing in French different to singing in your mother tongue? Vocally as a singer, with French music it tends to be a bit more scope in the expression. I have a certain vibrato in my voice which I try and moderate in English, but with French it seems to really suit the high drama of the French music; my vibrato definitely has more free rein when singing in French.

4

You were born in Canberra. Do you still have much of a local connection? My family moved to Sydney when I was four, so I never had a great understanding of the city. I’ve come through regularly over the years but, like a lot of my travel as a musician, it’s usually around work. One always assumes they will have time to explore the city they’re working in, but it’s usually case that there’s never the time. Canberra audiences are always beautiful.

5

26

In your career you’ve supported and performed with some amazing musicians; who stands out to you? They’ve all got their own special little place, but I’ve got to say I was pretty excited to be asked by Neil Finn to sing with him. I was in Leonardo’s Bride and had terrible flu before a show at Festival Hall in Melbourne. I was at my hotel lying in bed when I got a call to the room from Neil Finn asking if I’d sing a song with him off his new record. This was before music streaming, so I was backstage after my gig before theirs trying to learn the song on iPod. While it wasn’t a brilliant musical moment, but a lovely moment to get to sing with one of my heroes. Dobson’s responses have been condensed for publication. - Denholm Samaras

Jeff Popple reviews three new thrillers this week. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

In 1880, a train uses its Westinghouse air-brakes to come to a squealing halt. Its passengers disembark into a field of electric lights with one Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) standing in the middle, unveiling his plans for a Direct Current system to beat gaslight. Businessman and inventor George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) wishes to partner with Edison, inviting him to his home for dinner. After being snubbed, however, Westinghouse and his wife Marguerite (Katherine Waterson) set out to prove Alternating Current to be the better system instead. Originally cut to Harvey Weinstein’s taste and shelved due to his abuse controversy, the movie was re-edited and re-released thanks to Martin Scorsese’s producer’s final-edit clause. The Current War (M)

Last Survivor by Tony Park Macmillan, $32.99

Tony Park is Australia’s premier adventure writer and Last Survivor once more mixes together environmental concerns with a fast, action-packed plot. Ancient cycad plants are rapidly becoming extinct in southern Africa from plant poachers who sell them on the black market for lucrative returns. Concerned that a recent theft of the plants is being used to fund a terrorist attack, the CIA hire mercenary Sonja Kurtz to track down the missing plants. Aided by a rag-tag group of conservationists, Sonja finds herself up against a deadly and desperate enemy. Fascinating background, sure-footed plotting and regular gunfire makes this one of Park’s best books. Recommended.

The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish

magicians against each other due to the death of a loved one on stage, causing them to one-up each other throughout. Our inventors here don’t have a reasonable catalyst for their competition other than Edison’s fragile ego. Where Edison’s principals gradually slide, Westinghouse is played with pure intentions of seeking a true partnership; his wife is the driving force of his competitive strategy. While it is interesting to see the birth of the AC system (and a few other world-changing inventions), the main force of the story is unbelievably petty with no real stakes. Verdict: While a beautiful looking film with solid performances, our lead characters seem far removed from their real-life counterparts. Bring on a movie of the real hero of electricity, Nikola Tesla! 2.5 stars. The Current War is now screening in cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Every morning, four travelling companions enjoy the leisurely ferry trip down the Thames to their London jobs. It is pleasant way to commute to work until the morning after the Christmas break when one of them goes missing. Kit was last seen at the group’s Christmas drinks arguing with another passenger, James. Now the police suspect that James is responsible for Kit’s disappearance. Told through James’ eyes, Candlish skilfully peels back with clockwork precision layers of deceit to reveal what really happened on the night of Kit’s disappearance. A clever thriller that will appeal to aficionados of The Girl on The Train.

Cry Baby by Mark Billingham Hachette, $32.99

Mark Billingham’s series about London detective Tom Thorne has become a mainstay of British crime writing. It has been 20 years since the first book, Sleepyhead, appeared and now Billingham has gone back to write a prequel to that iconic novel. Cry Baby opens in 1996 and finds Thorne caught up in the search for a missing seven-yearold boy, Keiron Coyne. Traumatised by a similar case that ended badly, Thorne desperately tries to find the kidnapper before it is too late for Keiron. A professional, polished piece of detective fiction that will not disappoint Billingham’s many fans.

the look Reducing plastic in the bathroom It’s Plastic Free July, so now is the perfect time to take stock of the way we use plastic in our everyday lives. When it comes to plastic, the bathroom might not be at the top of your mind when it comes to the most offensive rooms of the house (we’re looking at you, kitchen). But Founder of Biome Eco Stores, Tracey Bailey, says the beauty and body care industry has a big plastic problem, relying heavily on plastic for containers and packaging. “Almost every beauty product contains some form of plastic whether it’s the bottle, cap, lid, packaging, applicator or apparatus,” she says. Tracey says the amount of plastic in beauty and personal care products can make the transition to a lifestyle with less plastic seem overwhelming. She says the solution is to “start small”, swapping one product at a time

Natural

There are several simple steps you can take to reduce your use of plastics in your personal care routine:

for a sustainable product. “When shopping for body care products, choose items packaged in reusable tins or recyclable packaging such as cardboard or glass,” she says. “Your dollar is your vote for the type of world you want to live in and every time you purchase a sustainable solution over a plastic packaged product, you are sending a message for change to the global body care brands that dominate the industry.”

How the search for the ‘perfect red’ spawned environmentally conscious lipstick Canberran Karen Green has long been on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick. The artist, model and owner of local plantbased lipstick brand, Just Lippy, has always been passionate about fashion, cosmetics and colour, and was inspired to create her own lipstick line after looking further into some of the ingredients found in typical lipsticks. “I started getting really tired of trying to read ingredients, and especially [the lists] that were just getting longer and longer – if you could even read them,” she says. “I was trying to get my perfect red … So I developed a formula for that.” After her first range grew to over 20 colours, Karen turned her attention to the amount of plastic involved in a lipstick tube. She’s recently launched her latest collection in reusable and recyclable aluminium pots – the lipstick can be applied with a brush or with fingertips for a ‘smudged’ look. “There’s at least half a dozen different components in a lipstick tube, and they can’t be recycled,” she says. “You can send them off to special programs but getting customers to bring

those back – they just don’t do it.” The colour range has also undergone an overhaul, with Karen eliminating the bright colour pigment ingredients derived from coal and petroleum. But this has also meant she has had to farewell her beloved ‘Chanel red’. “My first red was called ‘red number one’, and it was that really bright [red], which I still love,” she says. “But I thought ‘well, I have to change my behaviour if I want my customers to change theirs’. So that’s where we’re at.” The new range now uses synthetic oxides for its three colour options and has no excess packaging or plastic labels. “The oxides are non-toxic, and they are long lasting,” Karen says. “Generally speaking, packaging is very beautiful to look at, but all we’re doing is taking out the thing that we want and chucking out the rest. “I don’t want to put any more plastic out there into the world.” Shop via justlippy.com.au - Libby Kimber

Feel safe in your own home

Homebirth in Canberra What if, when labour begins, rather than rushing to hospital, you instead settled in at home with your trusted support team, including your midwife, by your side? Choosing to birth at home is once again a viable choice for Canberra women, thanks to a successful homebirth trial completed in 2019. Is it safe? The research is unequivocal. A recent University of Technology Sydney (UTS) study compared the results of five years of homebirth outcomes with Australian hospital birth statistics and found homebirth had a reduced risk of stillbirth and neonatal death, as well as an increased chance of having a ‘normal’ vaginal birth. A much larger study from the Netherlands of 500,000 confirmed that homebirth is safe for low-risk women.

Yes, we do home visits We can see you in the comfort of your own home providing Hearing Aids, Hearing Aid repairs and hearing services.

Why homebirth? There are many reasons people choose to birth at home, including: • Increased chance of going into labour spontaneously • No need to travel during labour • Allowance for the natural progression of labour with less risk of induction • Avoidance of procedures such as routine monitoring • More likely to have a natural birth and lower risk of c-section With one in three babies born by c-section in Australia, many women feel that birthing has become overly medicalised. Each intervention in the birthing process increases the chance that a further intervention will be required.

All measures are taken to ensure your safety during our visit. Call us on 0404 545 748 to book a home visit with us.

Hear the soundtrack of life

What if something goes wrong? Specially trained homebirth midwives are on hand throughout labour and have the necessary

equipment and medications to address routine complications. A homebirth midwife doesn’t just turn up and hope for the best. A matter of choice Ultimately, what’s most important is that women and families have access to the birthing environment where they feel most comfortable, whether that means being in hospital with an obstetrician, at home with a midwife or in a birth centre with mixed midwife and obstetric care. Women labour best and have the best birth outcomes when they feel safe and supported. A woman who is empowered by her birth experience is more likely to bond positively with her newborn child, establish successful breastfeeding and have better mental health outcomes. Raising children is a marathon not a sprint. What happens at the starting line can really shape the outcome for the whole of the journey. Scandi cool Ainslie 11 Piper Street This picture-perfect home on Piper Street in Ainslie is the epitome of minimalist-chic. This weatherboard cottagecum-Scandi sanctuary was built in the 1950s and has undergone a transformation into a modern and chic family home. LJ Hooker Dickson licensed agent and auctioneer, Stephen Bunday, says the home sits on a “low-maintenance block in a quiet street”, and has been transformed with a “super contemporary renovation and extension”. Outside, the home pays homage to its weatherboard cottage roots, while the interiors are sleek and modern. “The house has super clean lines and a Scandinavian feel,” Bunday says. “It’s filled with natural light and double glazing throughout will help keep energy bills down. “Although it is compact, there are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas and a superb indoor-outdoor flow.” Luxurious fixtures, fittings and inclusions are part and parcel of a home of this calibre; 11 Piper Street boasts floating oak flooring and enviable outdoor entertaining zones in the landscaped, lowmaintenance back garden which boasts a gorgeous feature tree. The kitchen is a light-filled haven, with skylight and splashback window, as well as a custom concrete island bench, Carrara marble splashback, gas cooktop, electric oven and dishwasher. 38

The modern bathrooms feature full-height tiling and wall-hung vanities, with a free-standing bath in the main. The main bedroom is home to the ensuite as well as a walk-in robe. Bunday says this home would be the perfect place for a small family or young professionals. “It’s a quiet part of Ainslie, not far from Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve but also reasonably close to the Dickson Wetlands,” he says. “The Ainslie shops are the best shops in Canberra and there’s a choice of several good schools nearby.”

property news

Weekly market wrap Eased restrictions, school holidays affect clearances Over the last four weeks, the volume of established listings advertised for the first time on Allhomes has increased by 13.77%, showing early signs of improved vendor sentiment. The unfortunate timing of school holidays and relaxation of some state border controls coincided with last weekends’ auctions, leading to a significantly lower clearance rate of 53%, down from 65% the same time last year. Conveyancers preparing contracts for vendors have indicated typical spring market conditions may start sooner this year as vendors who deferred transacting in March and April start putting their homes on the market and commence auction campaigns in August. During the past week, it has become evident Victorians are dealing with the fallout of their COVID-19 containment policy, resulting in new reported cases in Canberra. This may have caused a greater percentage of buyers to question if they should delay purchasing, especially apartments and townhouses. Allhomes ACT Real Estate Market Trends Report short-term view tracks month-to-month changes to the median property values and interest rates. From February to May 2020 (most recent data), falling interest rates have caused the median unit value to increase each month. The median unit value has increased by 5.88% over four months starting at $465,000 in February and increasing to $492,322 in May. Buyers who were considering making their decisions earlier this year but postponed are facing the prospect of having to pay significantly more to secure similar properties.

Stimulus influences purchasing decisions, lowers barrier to ownership In the new market, ACT Government stamp duty concessions are influencing purchasing decisions of downsizers and upgraders, who previously would not have qualified for any assistance to buy. Once ACT Revenue provide further detail on how the HomeBuilder Grants will be administered, and developers adjust their marketing to heavily promote their projects qualifying, the initial wave of demand created upon the announcement is anticipated to re-appear. These buyers initially looked to enter the market with gusto, however were disappointed by the lack of information and certainty created by a combination of premature announcement by Commonwealth Government, lack of enthusiasm to participate by ACT Government, or both. Leading private sector support, St George Bank has taken the initiative to help first home buyers into the market. They have announced discounting Lenders Mortgage Insurance to just $1 for first home buyers with a 15% deposit. Whilst 15% might sound like a big hurdle, if you’re a first home buyer seeking a new home to live in and have saved 5%, purchase an off-plan property for $500,000 and are eligible to receive a HomeBuilder Grant, you’ve effectively got a 10% deposit with 12-24 months to save the difference, and do not pay stamp duty in the ACT. This has significantly lowered the barrier of entry to property ownership and provided first home buyers with the ability to take control of their purchasing decision without having to rely on securing a place in the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme. Our current environment has a combination of historically low interest rates plus public and

private sector assistance to lower barriers of property ownership. Increasing demand without an equal increase to the volume of stock indicates delaying purchasing decisions could prove an expensive lesson, as those who made that decision in March will start to realise as they recommence their property search.

New hotel in Belconnen

Geocon’s hotel arm, Iconic Hotels, has announced a new Abode Hotel in Belconnen will open in September. Located in Grazier Lane in the Belconnen Town Centre, the hotel will form part of the Republic precinct, with 152 apartment-style rooms and the onsite No. 10 Restaurant and Bar. “Every hotel opening is worth celebrating,” said Geocon’s founder and managing director, Nick Georgalis, “but considering the extreme challenges the industry is currently facing, this particular milestone is all the more rewarding for everyone involved.” Abode Belconnen will become the eighth hotel in the Abode portfolio, and the tenth hotel overall for Iconic Hotels.

Light-filled living Farrer 1 Bruce Place For the current owners, this home in Farrer was just so nice they bought it twice! “They were lucky enough to buy the second time on their return to Canberra,” says LJ Hooker Canberra City sales manager and auctioneer, Kaylene King. “[They] have said the location is just amazing for day-to-day convenience and the home is just instantly warm and inviting.” Sitting on a 662sqm block – which extends beyond the courtyard walls – the threebedroom home is filled with natural light and allows for indoor-outdoor living. The bathroom, kitchen and separate laundry have all been renovated, while the open-plan living area is spacious and versatile – perfect for any buyer. “The outstanding feature of this home is the light; it is perfectly aspected to make the most of light and sun,” says King. “The high-set clerestory windows allow light to filter right through the home.” She says the home would suit young buyers looking for an entry point into the popular suburb, or those looking to downsize, such as a “more mature couple who

currently live locally, perhaps wanting to stay in the area but do away with a large block and stairs”. 1 Bruce Place also boasts a main bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite, covered entertaining area and two outdoor courtyards. There’s also a walk-in pantry in the kitchen, reverse-cycle air conditioning and established gardens with dripper system, as well as a double carport with lockup storage. King says the location of this delightful dwelling is hard to beat, close to a range of amenities including popular café, Fox and Bow. “The home is directly across the road from the local pre and primary schools, and an easy walk to the local Farrer shops for a great coffee, meal or groceries.”

Saturn is giving you another chance to work through a block you keep facing, which might take you out of your comfort zone. The new moon on 20 July is the ideal time to listen to some romantic music and to invest some time and attention into a relationship.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The new moon on 20 July is the ideal day to make time for light-hearted gossip and curiosity. Don’t feel you need to fit someone else’s idea of what personal expression has to be, or to move at a breakneck pace you’re not ready for. Follow what is calling you.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE This month, the stars are encouraging you to look deeply at where some of your boundaries are getting crossed. It’s one thing to be flexible and helpful, but it’s another to be taken advantage of altogether. The new moon on 20 July is the ideal time to make smart financial moves.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB Even though it seems you’re not gaining the momentum you want, just because you can’t always see progress doesn’t mean nothing is happening. The new moon on 20 July is the ideal time to get some work done, to improve your diet and to attend to duties on the home front.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Your compassion can make you feel guilty for taking time to focus on your own interests, but this yearning deserves to be nourished. The new moon on 20 July is the ideal time to spend time and energy with your loved ones, especially those younger than yourself.

A1 BIRD & POSSUM PROOFING The Wildlife Experts

The Colombian Spanish language film Litigante (M) by acclaimed director Franco Lolli, will screen in cinemas across Australia from 30 July. The film opened Cannes Critics Week in 2019, garnering emotional responses from audiences and critics alike. Between raising her young son, taking care of her ill-tempered, cancer-battling mother, and navigating her career as a topnotch lawyer dealing with a major corruption scandal, Silvia (Carolina Sanin) could very well be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. And what if the answer to all this was simply ... love? Litigante is a tender, yet bitingly funny portrait of family and modern womanhood. Spanish with English subtitles; palacecinemas.com.au

Enter to WIN Canberra Weekly has 10 x double passes to Litigante, screening in Canberra at Palace Electric, to be won.
