This week... From the editor A quick Facebook poll CW conducted this week and research of previous mentions elsewhere suggests the male equivalent of #Karen is #Kevin or #Ken (apologies to every kind, well-adjusted, communityminded, hashtag-free Karen, Kevin and Ken out there). Once simply a woman’s name, Karen has evolved from a pejorative term used in the US to call out white supremacy into shorthand for a woman perceived as entitled or demanding beyond reason – and, more lately, someone behaving badly during this pandemic (think #BunningsKaren). Of course, men are also capable of obnoxious behaviour; after all, two individuals issued with $1,000 fines in the ACT for COVID breaches have been adult males. They just didn’t go viral. I was buoyed on Monday to hear a radio interview with an everyday Aussie in Melbourne who observed: “At the end of the day, it’s a face mask. Just suck it up and bang it on.” Be kind. Get a grip (after taking essential hygiene precautions). Walk in other people’s shoes (again, hygiene). Reasons to be grateful this past week include all the courageous, hard-working frontline and essential workers toiling here and around the world, a nourishing weekend dinner with friends, ripe pears, belly laughs while watching Norsemen on Netflix, displays of support from our cherished readers and advertisers (you know who you are), and that #Julie is not a thing. Take care, - Julie Samaras

news Homelessness Week highlights ACT’s lack of suitable housing This year, Homelessness Week (2-8 August), comes in the midst of a recession spurred on by the pandemic that is impacting the health and financial wellbeing of many around the world. Job losses, layoffs and reductions in working hours have placed strain on millions of Australians – pushing more people, in the ACT and across the country, into rental stress and homelessness. While the ACT has been cushioned from the full brunt of the economic downturn due to some 40% of the Canberra workforce being employed in either the ACT or Australian public service, that hasn’t protected everyone. Australian Bureau of Statistics job data shows some 27,400 Canberra residents were underemployed in June, an increase of 7,300 on February, while 10,100 Canberrans were unemployed in June, which was 2,100 more than in February.
The most recent data on homelessness, from the 2016 Census, showed there were 1,596 homeless people in the ACT. Earlier this week, ACT Minister for Housing, Yvette Berry, pointed to the ACT Government’s $3 million COVID-19 funding for Canberrans experiencing or at risk of homelessness or experiencing domestic and family violence. This funding went toward establishing and expanding accommodation and support programs such as the Winter Lodge, Axial Housing Program and MacKillop House. As at 19 July: 25 women (with and without children) have been accommodated at MacKillop House since it opened on 2 June 2020; 22 clients have been permanently housed through the Axial Housing Program; and 79 men have been accommodated at the Winter Lodge since opening on 11 May 2020. Of these men,
25 have exited into longer-term accommodation and nine are residing at the Winter Lodge. Canberra Liberals Leader Alistair Coe said the ACT Government’s current homelessness strategy is piecemeal and fails to address the key issue of housing affordability. “Canberra is the most expensive city in Australia to rent a house and has the highest proportion of poorer people in rental stress in the country,” he said. “ACT Labor and the Greens have completely overlooked the fact that an increasing number of hardworking and aspirational Canberra families are in significant housing stress, with many facing homelessness.” Earlier this week, ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) called on the ACT Government to invest in social housing to address a 3,000-dwelling shortfall. ACTCOSS CEO, Dr Emma Campbell, said “the lack of social
housing means more people end up homeless because they can’t find an affordable home, and those who are already homeless have no way to escape it”. “It makes sense economically and is critical infrastructure for inclusive growth during the next phases of COVID-19. For every dollar invested, direct public investment in social housing is estimated to boost GDP by $1.30,” she said. The ACT Greens echoed the call from ACTCOSS to “urgently” address Canberra’s housing crisis, while championing the $450 million homelessness strategy they will take to the 2020 ACT election this October. Of that, $200 million would go towards creating 600 new rental properties for community housing and $200 million for 400 new public housing properties. - Denholm Samaras Find an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au
ACT paving the way with recycled glass sand A new collaboration between Icon Water, the ACT Government and sustainable infrastructure company Re-Group, will turn recycled glass products into sand for local infrastructure projects. The co-mingled glass, which makes up 30% of Canberra’s household recycling, will be used directly from the yellow recycling bin contents and taken to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Hume. The products will be turned into sand on site and used as pipe bedding by Icon Water for infrastructure projects in the ACT. ACT Recycling and Waste Reduction Minister, Chris Steel, said the initiative would both reduce costs and be environmentally beneficial. “This is a great recycling outcome, because our glass sand will replace Icon Water’s use of natural river sand 6

that is currently trucked to the ACT at a high cost, both financially and to the environment,” Mr Steel said. “20% of our glass that comes in through our container deposit scheme is actually used for remanufacturing into other glass bottles, but 80% is turned into sand so this application with Icon Water is going to achieve a great recycling outcome for Canberra”. Trials for the project began during 2019, and $21 million worth of upgrades were jointly funded by the ACT and Commonwealth governments for better quality glass washing facilities at the MRF. It is estimated Icon Water will use 200 tonnes of recovered sands in projects each year. Icon Water managing director Ray Hezkial said the product had a range of benefits for both the

company and community. “Recycled glass sand is an amazing product that has the same consistency and texture of bedding sand but, most importantly, is cost effective, great for the environment and safe for our people at Icon Water to use,” he said. Mr Steel said he hoped recycled sand would also be used for a range of other infrastructure
projects in the near future. “We also want to wash that sand so it can be used for other uses in infrastructure, including building concrete footpaths or building roads mixed in with asphalt,” he said. “We are already trialling that on places like Gundaroo Drive and are looking forward to roll that out on a much larger scale.” - Danielle Meddemmen

news Women leading the STEM field A 2018 Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Professions Survey Report found just 27% of the sector’s total workforce was female. Canberra-based geoscientist, Dr Steph McLennan, has been part of that percentage since entering the workforce in 2015 and has rallied ever since to increase those statistics. With a keen interest in science from a young age, Dr McLennan said her career in the field could be credited to a supportive household. “My dad loved science and was always listening to something science related on the radio or reading a science book and my mum encouraged that as well,” she said. “I was lucky to not only have an interest in science from the start, but also to have that encouraged by both my parents.
“There were never any negative stereotypes on what a scientist had to be or what that looked like.” After joining the Geoscience Australia team as part of its graduate program in 2015, Steph completed her PhD in geochemistry and sedimentology at the University of Adelaide in 2016. She now works within the Australian Antarctic Science Program through Geoscience Australia. Spending three months of her year working on shore in Antarctica, she takes samples and observations, then studies the human impacts such as tourism and infrastructure on ice-free land in the area. All this while also being one of the faces of National Science Week and using her knowledge and profile to change gender
stereotypes within the STEM industry. “We have recognised for a long time that women are underrepresented in leadership roles in STEM and also in the media. That can result in a gender bias about who can work in STEM,” she said. “That’s why through my profile I challenge stereotypes about what a scientist does and looks like, as well as visiting schools and public events and talking about how science is relevant to everyone and everyday life.” Dr McLennan said the STEM industry not only needed more representation of women, but diversity in general. “Across the board we need greater visibility and representation of the whole population,” she said.
Geoscientist Steph McLennan has challenged gender stereotypes and bias in the STEM field since entering the workforce in 2015.
“That’s really about ensuring STEM is working for everyone, and we are addressing problems facing the whole community.” National Science Week 2020 is on 15-23 August; visit scienceweek.net.au to find out more. - Danielle Meddemmen

It represents extraordinary value for money with its designer three-bedroom, two-bathroom, twocar homes, in a unique and central location. news Creating the gift of Music and Memory Musicians from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra are performing bi-weekly concerts for 10 residents of a local aged care home as part of a pilot program seeking to enrich the lives of those living with dementia. Developed by CSO bassoonist and audiologist Kristen Sutcliffe with third-year UC psychology student Heather Roche, Music and Memory has been designed to touch the hearts and minds of people living with dementia, through specifically chosen music. “We know that the area of the brain responsible for musical memories is one of the last areas of the brain to deteriorate with dementia,” Ms Sutcliffe told Canberra Weekly. “With a piece of music from young adulthood, they show responses where they show responses to nothing else; that’s a really powerful thing.” Currently midway through the eightweek pilot program, Ms Sutcliffe said the 10 participants in the program have loved the 30-minute concerts at Goodwin House Ainslie. Spanning musical theatre, pop, rock and classical, the repertoire has been compiled from
the results of a questionnaire the participants completed prior to the program’s first note. The song list retains a few fixed elements and a few variables, with the repetition of some crowd favourites deemed good for the audience. Every concert begins with You are my Sunshine by Jimmy Davis. “As soon as we start playing it you see the feet tapping, it’s beautiful,” Ms Sutcliffe said. And each performance is capped off with Almost Like Being in Love from the 1940s musical, Brigadoon. Then in the middle of every gig there’s even a bit of ABBA and a rendition of Hit the Road Jack. “The repetition, I knew from the theoretical side it made sense, but I was a bit anxious it would be boring … it hasn’t been at all.” Ms Sutcliffe said in her role as emcee for the concerts she has observed plenty of signs of audience enjoyment and participation. “People will start singing, which is fantastic, I don’t care if people get up and dance,” she smiled. “It has helped people feel settled, stable and calm.”
The pilot program aims to track and observe any kind of positive behavioural changes in the cohort over that time. This is quantified by a questionnaire administered by carers before the program started, then again at the end of week four, and finally at the end of program, week eight. While there is a body of research showing a strong link between mood and music for those with dementia, Ms Sutcliffe said this program is “aiming to fill a little niche within what’s been done so far” via a “live delivery method” rather than devices and specifically targeted music rather than generalised music for relaxation. Having also championed and administered the CSO’s Residscovering Music program for people with hearing loss, Ms Sutcliffe enjoys witnessing “what music does for people”. “Musicians on stage are at times devoid or removed from the fact that music might make someone’s day,” she said. “I love that hands-on experience being able to be with people while they experience the music.” - Denholm Samaras

Book Lovers Lane opened for business on Thursday 23 July at the Niche Markets within the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets and is the charity’s first ever permanent book store. Filling the shelves with the much loved Bookfair fare, Lifeline Canberra CEO Carrie Leeson has promised shelves stocked with books, DVDs, CDs and more. “Essentially it’s the same quality you would find at our Bookfairs and all the same prices,” she said. “There may be less in terms of genre because of how much space we have, but we are monitoring
what people want and what they are buying and bringing in more of that from the warehouse.” Lifeline usually holds its iconic Bookfairs three times per year but has been unable to hold them lately due to COVID-19 restrictions. All funds raised from Book Lovers Lane will go directly to the charity’s Crisis Support Service. Ms Leeson said the Niche Market location was perfect for the new retail space. “The vibe and the feel is in line with our organisation. It’s a grounded retail space and lots of the retailers have crafted their products with love,” she said. “That links into the ethos of our charity as the books are donations from our community, and we handle them with love to put them back out

to the community. “The markets are a communityoriented space and that’s what Lifeline is all about.” The store will be restocking weekly, and all donations should be made by following the guidelines on the Lifeline Canberra website. Ms Leeson said the new retail store was a worthy substitute until the Bookfairs were back up and running. “We have all the processes in place now after our opening
weekend and we are ready to entertain larger crowds,” she said. “There will be events, ambassadors, mascots out there in the same Bookfair and Lifeline spirit. “We will always find a way to bring that to the community,” she smiled. The store can accommodate up to 80 people at a time in line with current COVID-19 restrictions, and hand sanitiser and gloves are available at the door. - Danielle Meddemmen
Community input for new school The ACT Government is asking for the community’s input to name the new school in Molonglo which is set to open in 2021 for pre and primary school students. The local community has been asked to vote for their preferred name from a list of five options: Isabel Coe School, Ngingali Cullen School, Evelyn Scott School, Arnold Hunter School, and John Budby School – each an Aboriginal leader known for reform and activism. The Government is also seeking
input on the design of the school’s logo and uniform, with four concepts available to choose from. The $47 million primary school will cater for up to 644 students from preschool to year six. The school will also see a $23 million high school integrated with the primary school on the same site, which will open its doors for the 2023 school year for students in years seven to 10. The home was designed around two public frontages: an oval and shared green space, and a rear lane without back fencing (pictured) to foster openness and community spirit.
The Lemon Wedge House, designed by architect Sarah Truscott for Philip Leeson Architects, claimed the Malcolm Moir and Heather Sutherland Award for residential architecture at the 2020 ACT Architecture Awards. Photos: Anthony Basheer.
Lemon Wedge: downsized and delighted Simplicity, functionality and community were at the heart of this year’s Malcolm Moir and Heather Sutherland Award winner for residential architecture in the ACT. The Lemon Wedge House designed by architect Sarah Truscott for Philip Leeson Architects – is located in Curtin among the 1960s Radburn town-planning model. The pedestrian-friendly model ensures local shops and schools can be reached by foot, without crossing a road, an important element of the brief from Ms Truscotts’s downsizing clients. The Lemon Wedge House was designed around two public frontages: an oval and shared green space, and a rear lane without back fencing which they hope fosters openness and community spirit. Ms Truscott said working with the owners of “Lemon Wedge” was easy. Her clients had worked with Philip Leeson Architects 15 years earlier, which supported a
trusting relationship and helped all parties remain on the same page throughout the two-year build. “We had a clear and early focus from all parties which meant that the plan and massing remained largely unchanged from the initial concept design stages,” she said. Ms Truscott said she was careful to develop a contemporary design with strong visuals, while adding to the history of the area. Lemon Wedge strikes a bold silhouette, with a prominent and intentionally defensive roof form which casts a high-shield and protective external façade in response to its relatively exposed setting. The palette of brickwork and steel cladding was selected for its durability, affordability, and timeless qualities, while the horizontal tonal banding and dramatic yellow highlights on the three key facades draws light and warmth into the building.
The home is on one level which enables the owners to age in place.
Given the prominent public site of the build, Ms Truscott said a private open space with northern aspect was critical for the clients. “The courtyard plan form was an immediate and lasting response, arrived at on the first visit to the site with our clients.” The finishing touch – a lightfilled gallery – wraps around the courtyard and serves as the main circulation space. Harris Hobbs Landscapes created a robust garden to complement the key public frontage. Typically, rear lanes within this planning typology are flanked with tall hedges and garages and have anecdotally led to a history of petty crime in the area. This was a key consideration when designing the planting as well as the orientation of some key rooms and the second front entry facing this public space. While Ms Truscott said the feedback from the community has
Simplicity, functionality and community are at the heart of the design.
been overwhelmingly positive, the Lemon Wedge design has challenged some people. “But that’s what good architecture does,” she said. “It should challenge people.” The home is also all on one level, so the owners may age in place for many years to come. - Cassandra Power

Expert styling tips with Neale Whitaker Fresh off the Maison & Object interior design trade show in Paris, interior design expert and Luxaflex brand ambassador, Neale Whitaker, shares his tips for styling that suits your home and personality.
2021 trends Throw away the trend book and
instead use a mix of styles, eras, shapes, and textures to create a truly unique interior. Keep the big picture items in mind such as multi-functional and sustainable living. Trends fit into two categories: macro and micro. Macro trends (like sustainability) are those around
for extended periods of time, with no view of going anywhere, and micro trends (like shapes and styles) come and go quickly.
How does it make you feel? Make your home all about you and your emotions. It’s easy to open a catalogue and pick out a theme to replicate, but if the theme doesn’t suit your space, it won’t feel right. Merge trends, and don’t be afraid to mix and match styles within your room, go slowly and take confidence in your own taste and style. Maximise your home’s natural light to open up your space and instantly elevate your mood.
Adding warmth Luxaflex window fashions ambassador Neale Whitaker says styling your home should be all about your emotions rather than trends.
A bright room with lots of light is the perfect starting point to creating warmth in a home.

Layer your home with lamps, rugs, and soft furnishings to create warmth and display your favourite art, personal photographs, mementos, and books to tell your story and turn your house into a home.
Trust your instincts Rules are meant to be broken. Create a home with spirit, soul, and individuality by trusting your instincts. Don’t be afraid to mix things up a little and remember, things you love are more important than things that are on trend. Your home is yours, so make it your own.

Bring the outside inside With many people spending more time at home these days, we’re increasingly looking to natural building materials, such as timber and stone, to help create a deeper connection to earth and nature inside our homes. Mimic nature with materials and patterns Biophilic design focuses on aspects of the natural world that has contributed to human health and productivity. Incorporate biophilic design into your home by using natural materials such as wood and stone and choosing earthy textures and colours. Accentuate natural lighting to bring the elements in and bolster your mood. Be inspired by biomorphic shapes (forms found in nature) when styling your home and add live plants throughout your home for fresh, clean, indoor air.
Design holistically An all-encompassing holistic approach to sustainable design, style and functionality will bring a sense of health and wellness into your home. Timber manufacturer, Big River Group’s general manager John Lorene said the materials surrounding us on a daily basis are critical to our mood, and the beauty and uniqueness of wood is being embraced for this reason. “With an increase in apartment living and smaller house footprints, we are seeing a rise in the use of decorative timbers on walls and ceilings being specified as part of the design element to enhance the living space,” he says.
The warmth of timber brings a sense of nature and wellbeing into the home. Photo: Big River Group.
Integrate your furniture with timber The sky is the limit when using timber in the home. It can be used on interior walls, ceilings and cabinetry, window reveals, kitchen carcasses and joinery, wall panelling and
flooring – even custom furniture. Don’t be overwhelmed by the options; consult an expert to get the right timber and ensure a consistent high-quality finish, and a spectacular home that blends beautifully into its natural surroundings.

Nearly two-thirds of surveyed homeowners were either planning to renovate or were renovating their home when the pandemic was declared on 12 March.
Pandemic projects on the rise Coronavirus restrictions have inspired many Australian homeowners to renovate or declutter their house in the hope of increasing the enjoyment of their space while in lockdown. Home renovation website, Houzz, surveyed more than 2,200 Australian homeowners in July and found threequarters wanted to make changes to
their home. Most people wanted to upgrade their outdoor space (30%), followed by the kitchen (26%), then the bathroom (24%). The survey found nearly twothirds of homeowners were already planning or completing a renovation or design project when
the pandemic was declared on 12 March. But the pandemic didn’t stop many spirited renovators; only 2% cancelled their project, 25% delayed their project and 62% kept on going. It wasn’t just renovations that kept Australian homeowners busy; 56% of those surveyed spent time decluttering, organising or cleaning and tidying up. Just under 50% of respondents got happy in the kitchen, with increased time spent cooking and baking. Many renovators went high-tech during coronavirus, with four out of five using online tools for shopping, invoicing, payments, remote communication, or contract discussions. Last month, Houzz released online renovator tools in their Houzz Pro marketing and management software.

Food writer Libby Kimber brings you two quick and easy meals for winter weeknights. Dinner? Done!
Chicken korma tenderloins Image and text from The Great Thermo Meal Prep Cookbook by Tracey Pattison, photography by Cath Muscat, Murdoch Books, RRP $39.99.
2 large ripe oxheart tomatoes, roughly chopped 2 large roasted red capsicums from jar (piquillo) 3 portobello mushrooms, ripped into pieces 4 cloves garlic, peeled 1/2 bunch parsley 1/2 bunch chives 25ml olive oil 1 pinch saffron threads 1 Tbsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper
Prep: 20 mins, plus cooling, chilling and standing time
Add the onion to the mixer bowl, measuring cup in. Chop for 10 sec/speed 7. Scrape down the side of the bowl.
To make the sofrito: Place all ingredients in a food processor and process to a pesto consistency.
Cook: 40 mins
Add the tomatoes to the mixer bowl, measuring cup in. Cook for 5 min/100°C/speed 1.
Heat a 30cm frypan or paella pan on high heat. Add sofrito and cook until tomatoes start to become juicy, 3-4 minutes. Add field mushrooms, mushroom stock and bring to the boil.
Serves 6 1 red onion, quartered 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 1/2 quantity korma paste 700g chicken tenderloins 500g orange sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped 100g baby spinach leaves Chopped coriander, to serve Cooked basmati rice, to serve 30
Sofrito
Transfer the mixture to a large, deep, heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Add the paste, chicken and sweet potato to the pan. Stir until the mixture comes to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until cooked and the sauce is reduced slightly. Remove from the heat, cool the mixture in the pan. Add the spinach and stir to combine, then cover with a lid. Transfer the pan to the fridge and chill for up to 2 days.
Sprinkle in rice and reduce to a medium heat. Continue cooking for about 16-18 minutes. Do not stir! When rice is tender and liquid has almost fully reduced (there should still be some liquid in the paella-pan), cook for a further 2 minutes to achieve ‘soccarrada’ (crust on the bottom of the pan).
To serve, remove the pan from the fridge and leave to stand for 10 minutes. Reheat the mixture in the pan over medium–low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if needed to loosen, or until heated. Serve sprinkled with the coriander, and the rice alongside.
Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and garnish with chives, thinly sliced button mushrooms, radish and grated manchego cheese. Squeeze over lemon juice just before serving.

Star Wars: Shadow Fall by Alexander Freed Del Rey, $32.99
Following the battle of Endor, an elite squadron of TIE fighters, Shadow Wing, is causing chaos throughout the galaxy. In response, the New Republic has formed Alphabet Squadron, a mismatched group of pilots and ships, to hunt them down. However, their latest attempt to trap Shadow Wing leads to betrayal and tragedy, threatening to crumble the squadron from within. This is an excellent sequel to last year’s Alphabet Squadron and continues the series of gritty tales set in the aftermath of the original Star Wars trilogy. Containing a fantastic story, exciting combat sequences and several compellingly damaged characters, Shadow Fall is a great read.
solar lights at night. The exhibition has been produced by aMBUSH Gallery and curated in partnership by aMBUSH’s Bill Dimas and Head On Photo Festival director, Moshe Rosenzveig OAM. The 24 intensely personal works take viewers into realms of transformation, rebirth, identity, history, nature, connection and the Dreamtime. Canberra photographer based in Wamboin, Dr Judith Crispin, has four works on display. Crispin’s photographs are intricate, complex and time-consuming works of art. Taken as very long exposures – averaging 50 hours per work – Crispin utilises a number of “antiquarian photography processes reconstructing chemistry processes” to create them. “Bearing in mind I don’t know anything about chemistry and have had a few colossal disasters along the way, accidentally creating cyanide gas … It’s a highly controlled process that smells terrible,” she told Canberra Weekly. The processes Crispin uses are lumen printing – exposing dark room paper to light; chemigram – using photo chemicals to create detail; cliché verre (glass painting) – with layers of sticks, leaves, resin and paint; and pencil drawing to

etch on any final details. “It is photography given the word means ‘light painting’; these colours and images are being created using light and photochemistry.” Having developed the techniques and style herself through trial and error since 2017, Crispin recently obtained funding to further develop her practice. “I’m making big steps forward now thanks to a grant from Arts ACT allowing me to build a five-and-a-half metre geodesic camera. “Because of protection this dome will offer from elements, I’ll be able to make prints with larger exposure and larger animals,” she said. Crispin said she’s a big fan of how the exhibition is being displayed outdoors, describing it as “egalitarian”. “I’m a huge believer in galleries and the art world, but there’s no doubt some people feel excluded by that. “I’ve spoken to many people like that, so this type of exhibition where everything is outdoors is really inclusive and gives everyone a chance to be involved,” she said. Where I Stand is on display at Exhibition Avenue, Kambri, ANU until 31 October.
This week, Michael Popple checks out three new impressive science fiction and fantasy novels. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com Queen of Storms by Raymond E. Feist Harper Voyager, $39.99
Legendary fantasy author Raymond E. Feist returns with an outstanding second entry in his new series, The Firemane Saga. Spies Hatu and Hava have settled down in the town of Beran’s Hill, where they have befriended talented blacksmith Declan. However, war is coming to Beran’s Hill, and its terrible consequences will see all three embrace their different destinies with the fate of the world in the balance. This was another brilliant outing from Feist, who has once more produced a powerful and creative story. Filled with action, extensive world building and characters finding their destiny, this is a very enjoyable novel.
Demon in White by Christopher Ruocchio Gollancz, $32.99
In the far future, the Empire is at war with the alien Cielclin, a powerful civilisation determined to annihilate everyone. Humanity’s only hope may be adventurer Hadrian Marlowe, who has gained influence and infamy throughout the galaxy. However, fame has a cost, and Marlowe soon finds himself targeted by enemies within the Empire. The third book in the expansive Sun Eater series, this is another amazing science fiction epic that continues the elaborate narrative from the previous two novels. With a distinctive gothic setting and a compelling plot about a doomed protagonist, this is an incredible and highly recommended read.

In late 1945 somewhere in the North Atlantic, a life raft holding the survivors of a torpedoed hospital ship drifts aimlessly until a giant abandoned German minesweeper ship emerges from the mist. By the end of World War II, the Nazis had stolen myriad artwork and artefacts from countries they invaded in an attempt at cultural domination and on the off chance such possessions served a supernatural advantage. While The Monuments Men covers the story of allied forces attempting to retrieve stolen items, films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hellboy and Constantine play with the supernatural; none so far have covered the vampire genre. Our group of heroes enter a claustrophobic, industrial environment, finding a sole survivor who leads them further into the bowels of the ship and the growing mystery as to what is

sleeping within. The atmosphere is chilling, the ship imposing and the vampires ancient and horrific. The international characters further add to the scope of the story and the stakes should the awoken vampires find their way to land! Produced, directed and cowritten by Justin Dix, Blood Vessel was filmed in Melbourne on a low budget with high production value. Dix uses his design, makeup and special effects skills developed over years working on both local independent films like The Babadook and Hollywood blockbusters like some of the Star Wars prequels. Verdict: A surprisingly fun, oldschool B movie with A+ design and practical effects. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Available on DVD and on-demand on iTunes, Google, Fletch, Foxtel Store and Umbrella Entertainment.

Beat the wall With Ninja Warrior back on our screens, we’re seeing the warriors power up the ‘warped wall’. I thought this would be a great time to share with you tricks and training tips so you too can beat the wall! All ‘ninjas’ have one objective every time we venture onto any ninja course, and that is to hit that buzzer once we get up the wall. While the wall is intimidating and scary when you look at it, it is, in fact, one of the easier obstacles on the course once you understand it and learn how to tackle it. Running up the warped wall: On their first few tries, most people run into the wall or at the wall – both of these approaches are wrong. What you need to do is learn how to run up the wall and place your feet in the right areas to get the best push up. You will also require some speed and power to assist you up the wall. Here’s what you need to know: • When running to the wall, plan where you are going to place your first and second step. • The first step will hit a slight angle of the wall, as it starts to slope up. • For the second step, you’ll need to lift your
other leg towards your chest, place your foot onto the wall and explode off. • It’s important to be looking up at the top of the wall and planning where your hands are going to be, then you can grab on and pull yourself over. Here are some more handy tips and tricks: • Your run up to the wall is only six metres, so only practise with that distance. • Do a practice walk up to the wall and map out your path up its face. • Always look up the wall as you take the first step, because you are going up the wall not through it. • Attack the wall with confidence. • Always get your elbows up over the edge of the wall and use your arm strength to help pull yourself to the top. Training for the warped wall: It’s best to stick to the basics when training for the wall. Here’s a workout that you can do as a straight set: Warm up: • 5-minute walk/run • Stretching: calves and Achilles Part 1: repeat five times

the look How fashion stitched together a community Saloon Design House, on Braidwood’s main street, has become a part of the fabric of the NSW country town’s community. Owned by Jane Magnus and Dena Pharaoh, Saloon is now an icon of Wallace Street with its collection of ‘liberated prairie’-style dresses, skirts and vests – designed in Braidwood and sewn in both Braidwood and Sydney. The brand began when Dena, a dressmaker, met Jane, who happened to own an empty shop. Saloon quickly became a love letter to the women of Braidwood as locals pitched in to get the business up and running – those local women now model each collection. “And then since then we’ve always said that Saloon was inspired by the women of Braidwood, both past and present,” says Jane. The tightknit community again rallied together earlier this year when bushfires ravaged the region. Jane and Dena’s new collection was derailed when they were forced to close due to the conditions, but the outpouring of support from around the country from people looking to spend their money in fire-affected regions spurred them to create
their ‘Phoenix’ collection. “The whole collection has batik detailing sprinkled throughout it, and we have full batik dresses which we’ve named inspired by the bushfire event,” says Jane. The community once again came together to photograph the entire collection, right on the edge of the Monga and Budawang National Parks. “They had literally been fighting fires the day before and had heat rash across their chests from being so close to the fires, and smoky hair,” Jane says. “We were driving past active fire and smoke to get there, so that made it very real.” She says while they were able to keep working behind the scenes when the bushfires hit, COVID-19 has “taken the wind out from under our wings”. With five kids between them to homeschool during the shutdown, and fabric delays from the UK and Italy, Saloon’s new collection has been delayed by six months. Jane says, however, the strong community continues to support one another and accepted the “new reality with great grace”.

Heritage haven Bungendore NSW 21 Forster Street Thornleigh, in the heart of Old Bungendore Village, represents a “once in a lifetime” chance to secure a truly “rare and unique” property, according to Luton Gungahlin licensed agent, Katrice Velnaar. “This Heritage Award-winning home has been lovingly restored and renovated, combining quality Victorian aesthetic with a masterful modern extension,” Velnaar says. “Complete with stained glass windows, original Baltic pine floorboards and encircled by beautifully landscaped gardens, this extraordinary home provides a seamless blend of contemporary design with 1880s grandeur.” Retaining much of its original 1880s charm, Thornleigh comprises two residences set over 1,332sqm: the main home, with open plan living and extension; and a separate cottage. Velnaar says “both residences have undergone an impressive restoration in the past seven years, retaining the original 1880s character throughout,” and would be perfect for “buyers looking to live in a historic home”. Weekly market wrap Could Canberra’s market overtake Melbourne? Australians have witnessed actions and government intervention unimaginable only months ago. A global pandemic, Australian States and Territories independently restricting travel by closing their borders, and Melbourne citizens being placed in a Stage 4 lockdown where police enforce a night-time curfew, is a chapter in Australian history that will be long remembered. Unlike other jurisdictions, the ACT has so far managed to avoid widespread community transmission of COVID-19. This has allowed the lifestyles of Canberrans to function rather normally, but with an increased level of vigilance, hand washing and maintaining social distancing. Looking to the future once an effective vaccine becomes available and people can travel more freely, will those living interstate and overseas continue to stay? Or will migration from global cities to areas which were able to contain the virus create increased demand in those markets, creating the potential for future growth? Either way, Canberra’s property market has decoupled itself from other capital cities nationally with values continuing to increase. CoreLogic Australia’s Monthly Home Value Index showed house values in Canberra increased by 0.7% during July and 1.5% for the quarter. Units increased by 0.1% for July and 0.5% for the quarter. In contrast, values for all dwellings, combined houses and units fell by 0.9% in Sydney and 1.2% in Melbourne where their median is now only $36,974 greater than Canberra. Continued growth may see Canberra’s property market assert itself into the position of having the second highest values of any Australian capital city. Nationally, markets are operating off low
supply volumes; however, in Canberra, supply of established dwellings has been steadily increasing since bottoming out the week ending 5 June, where Allhomes recorded only 100 established properties advertised as new. Since then, the weekly number of established properties appearing as new listings has increased to 144. The market has been comfortably absorbing increased stock levels. Domain reported Canberra has maintained the highest capital city auction clearance rate nationally for five of the last six weeks. Over this time, the total sales value has increased from $11,520,000 with a median of $731,500, to last weekend achieving a total sales value of $22,105,000 with a median of $843,500. Lower rates of value inflation have long been the trade-off Canberra property owners accept in return for exceptional resilience during market adversity. Should the median dwelling value in Canberra overtake Melbourne, it will illustrate the value slow-moving, consistent markets have over
Worker safety in residential construction was the focus of WorkSafe ACT’s Strategic Summit on Friday 31 July. Workplace Safety Minister Suzanne Orr said a key priority for the now-independent WorkSafe ACT is improving the industry’s safety culture, as outlined in her Statement of Expectations for the organisation. “Two recent fatalities in the residential construction industry leave us in no doubt that this industry’s safety culture must change.

those with higher levels of volatility. Canberra’s population comprises the highest median household incomes nationally, can borrow money at the lowest historical interest rates, and our market has positive sentiment from both buyers and sellers, meaning it may not be a case of if, but when values in Canberra overtake Melbourne given our positive outlook compared to the speed and potential acceleration of declining values in their market.

Workplace fatalities are unacceptable and together we must lead action to make sure every worker goes home at the end of their shift,” Ms Orr said. Heaven in Hughes Hughes 10 Glasgow Street With sweeping views across the Woden Valley, this architecturally designed home oozes charm and warmth from the very outset. Set in the highly coveted southside suburb of Hughes, 10 Glasgow Street is filled with original charm and features blended with modern style. Ray White Canberra licensed agent, Nicky Symon, says the home sits on a “quiet elevated street with panoramic views in a sought-after suburb”. “It has a great sense of space, with potential for further improvements.” With four bedrooms, each with built-in robes, and a standout main bedroom with ensuite, walk-in and spectacular views, the home delivers
a flexible floor plan to suit the needs of any family. The light and airy home is a dream, with high vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and an open fireplace in the living room. The stunning features continue in the open-plan family, dining and kitchen space, and downstairs a large rumpus room provides an endless amount of options for work or play with a study nook, enclosed room – currently used a fifth bedroom – and combined laundry/bathroom. A terrace off the living room is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset drink, while the covered patio with barbecue is ideal for entertaining on summer nights. Outside there’s also a private garden with lawn and double carport.

Symon says a family is the ideal buyer of the home, to make use of the four bedrooms and living spaces. “The home also has potential to house home-based businesses through the use of the studio downstairs with external and internal access,” she says. The home is close to the wellequipped local shops, schools, arterial roads and native parkland.

Imagine waking up to the sun rising out of the ocean. Morning coffee in hand, wander out onto the back lawn that becomes beach sand in a few paces. Wander to the shore line and let the water lap over your feet and look over out to the toll gates standing proud from the ocean floor. This property is a perfectly posioned beachfront, protected from the southerlies and kissed with northern light. Summer BBQ’s on the back deck, moonlight swimming through the waves and a myriad of colour from the lights of the Bay. This 3 bedrooms home is humble yet filled with heart. A home full of laughter and love. Wet towels and sandy feet. This is the beach house that everyone wants to own. This is the beach house buyers have knocked on the door asking if they will sell. This is the beach house I have always wanted to take to market. I waited 20 years. Its me. This is your moment. Full fact sheet available on request.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
You will be expressing yourself this month by showing off your individuality and what makes you unique. When it comes to friendships this week, be prepared for a sudden change of plans involving friends and associates. Someone, through no fault of their own, might suddenly let you down.
This week, the planets are indicating that a monetary matter with someone else will need discussing and sorting out. It would also be a good idea to look at your bank statements just to see where all your hard-earned money is going so you know where you stand.
It appears that increasing tensions between you and your loved ones are reaching a point where you must deal with the situation. It also seems that it’s up to you to sort out any misunderstandings. A domestic repair or purchase will add to your home comforts or assets.
An unusual experience this month could prove to be enlightening. It will take a thoughtful initiative to cultivate new connections, but insightful communication will guide you through. This week, the planets warn you to be careful with your finances as unexpected outlays are likely.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
The moon in Aquarius, your opposite number, creates tension in your personal relationships and you’ll have to take on board others’ wants, needs and requests. If you insist on having everything your own way, you risk losing the love and respect of those closest to you.
This week, the planets warn you to be careful of issues on the domestic front. What someone says and what they feel may be contradictory. Their ambiguity is making you more determined to find the answer, but be careful of getting
Positive action with a drawn-out matter will be exhilarating. You may still have a way to go but you’ll be on track to success. The planets could create a stress indicator in relationships this week and you will need to much more considerate than is usually the case.
things out of proportion.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
This week, if you have something to say to certain people at work, stop waiting for the right time and right place, moment, or mood, as that ideal time may never arrive. You’ll only find yourself wishing you’d taken the opportunity to speak up when you could.
The focus in your chart this month is on matters related to children, creativity, social life and meeting new people. However, it looks like tense discussions are on the way this week as it appears that someone is not being totally honest with you – and you hate that!
Encouraging developments with a secret hope or desire will lift your spirits; keen follow-through from you could prove the tipping point. This week the planets indicate you will find yourself wanting security and protection, so you will be avoiding tricky people and those who make you feel uncomfortable.
You may soon make plans to travel or connect with siblings in order to smooth over any rough spots in your relationships. This week, the planets warn you to be careful of how you deal with those in places of authority as trouble could unexpectedly land in your lap.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Your relationships with loved ones have turned you every which way but loose in the last five months. This week, the planets warn you to be careful of what you say as someone is likely to take offence, especially if it could be interpreted as racist or sexist.
