Regular readers will be familiar with my “reasons to be grateful” that round off most columns. It’s not Pollyanna; it’s science! Developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the simplest ways to improve your satisfaction with life, according to Forbes contributor, Amy Morin, who cites seven scientifically proven benefits: Relationships: Not only is saying thank-you polite, acknowledging other people’s contributions can help you win new friends and create new opportunities. Physical health: Grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier than average. Psychological health: Gratitude reduces depression and toxic emotions. Reduced aggression: Grateful people experience more empathy and a decreased desire to retaliate. Better sleep: Spend just 15 minutes jotting down a few grateful sentiments before bed and you may sleep better. Self-esteem: Rather than becoming resentful toward those who have more money or better jobs, grateful people are better able to appreciate other people’s accomplishments. Mental strength: Recognising all you have to be thankful for, even during testing times, fosters resilience. There are no rights or wrongs about what you express gratitude for; it’s your call, no judgement. Underlying my daily expressions of gratitude is a deep, abiding appreciation for the gift of life, not to be taken for granted. So today, take note of one thing you’re grateful for. Thank me later (winky face). - Julie Samaras

Most Braddon traders say better parking options would attract more customers and help their businesses recover from the economic downturn caused by COVID-19. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Braddon traders say better parking would boost business Braddon United Retail and Traders (BURT) has called on the ACT Government to provide a seat at the table for local business precincts to ensure the needs and interests of government and business are aligned. According to BURT, local businesses have the knowledge and solutions to increase productivity during the coronavirus recovery.
A report based on a survey of 147 Braddon business operators found around 70% have experienced a loss in revenue since March and more than 90% identified parking as the number one priority to help increase business. The report identified the need for more angle parking, short-term spaces and loading zones, improvements to traffic
flow including reductions in speed, the addition of pedestrian crossings, creating a safer space with additional lighting and CCTV, and beautification of the area with works by local street artists, upgraded footpaths and landscaping. BURT spokesperson Kel Watt said they welcomed the ACT Government’s recent funding announcement to upgrade Braddon but said more community consultation would increase the economic return on their investment. “They’ve allocated $8.5 million and the works are planned for 2021 so there is enough time to design, consult and get it right,” Mr Watt said. “Without spending any extra money or delaying the works, they can deliver the upgrades and infrastructure that have a direct benefit. “The pot plants and things are lovely, but if you can’t get a park, you’re not going to come to Braddon. “They say there’s been consultation, but they’ve just thrown a couple of postcard
size surveys at us and said ‘what do you think?’ – that’s not consultation; we want a conversation. “Only one out of 10 people think they’ve been consulted.” The report identified that 55% of businesses fear closure or the serious threat of closure if another shutdown occurred. Mr Watt said the owners and employees in the hospitality, retail and beauty sectors were still in need of significant financial support, with the “necessary restrictions” still affecting revenue. “Failure to get the right policy and programs in place now will see dozens of Braddon businesses wind up and their staff without jobs,” he said. “If they’re going to spend money, they need to make sure it’s targeted support, it doesn’t need to be one size fits all, it needs to respond to our needs.” Canberra Weekly contacted the ACT Government for comment but no response was received before print deadline. - Cassandra Power
‘Precautionary’ COVID hardship payments for ACT workers Hardship payments of up to $1,500 will be available for ACT workers who need to take time off work to self-isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19. Depending on the individual’s circumstances, the payments will be made available for workers unable to access other available support or sick leave from their employer. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the introduction of the over $1 million hardship fund is precautionary at this stage, with the hope “we don’t have to use it”. “That’s the ideal situation, that we’re able to manage the public health circumstances in such a way that we don’t need to 6
canberraweekly.com.au
[use it]. But it’s there for a group of individuals who might find themselves in that difficulty.” He said there would be eligibility criteria for those applying for the payment. Applicants would have to show that they have no sick leave or other sources of income such as Commonwealth payments, as well as prove they have no savings and are not a dependant. “Waiting for a test result is often less than 24 hours, so you wouldn’t get $1,500 [to be] at home for 24 hours,” Mr Barr said. “But if you were forced to sit out for a fortnight because you were required for reasons of the incubation period of the virus
to do so, and you had access to nothing else, then this emergency relief would be there for you.” Mr Barr also criticised the Federal Government for leaving some people unable to access Commonwealth supports. He said this “consistent pattern of drawing the line at the wrong point” has required State and Territory Governments as well as community organisations to “step in and fill the void”. “In all of these circumstances through this year, there have been examples where, for no particular reason, the Commonwealth has drawn an arbitrary line that has left some people out,” he said. “Whether that’s international
students, whether that’s casual workers who were with an employer for less than 12 months back in March.” The Federal Government has extended the offer of paid pandemic leave, currently in place in Victoria, to other States and Territories should they find themselves in a similar situation and declare a state of emergency or disaster. Mr Barr also announced the ACT Government would extend the utilities concession to eligible asylum seekers. Those with an ACT Services Access Card will be able to apply by 30 June 2021 for a $900 rebate on their electricity bills for 2020-21. - Libby Kimber

Belconnen Arts Centre ready for post-renovation reopening
The Belconnen Arts Centre theatre space can be completely blacked out, or the curtains can be pulled back either side of the enormous north-facing windows to unveil a view of Lake Ginninderra. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.
The first of three Belco Arts productions for the remainder of 2020, L’Entreprise du Risque will feature an eclectic mix of acrobatics, clowning and unexpected surprises.
Come Friday 21 August, guests will enter the newly renovated Belconnen Arts Centre and be greeted by the box office to the left, a bar to the right, and a funky, dynamic permanent lighting installation overhead – itself a work of art. Some familiar touches – like the lounges and a maquette of the Belconnen Owl sculpture – adorn the area, offering a sense of familiarity. Passing through the foyer and stepping into the theatre for the first time, it’s hard not to be taken back by the sheer size of the space. With a capacity of up to 400 seated patrons (a little over 80 under current restrictions), numerous stage and seating configurations can be organised to allow for a variety of audience experiences such as theatre in the round or more conventional layouts. The space can be completely blacked out, or the curtains can be pulled back either side of the enormous north-facing windows to unveil a picturesque view of Lake Ginninderra and bathe the space in natural light. Belconnen Arts Centre marketing manager, Skye Rutherford, said the black box theatre is not
just a highly versatile space, but also fills a gap in Canberra’s theatre offerings. “The intention is to provide as much opportunity as possible … to have as many shows as possible that are created in Canberra but then go to other places,” she said. “It also provides a space for the community. It could be for awards nights, conferences, weddings or something like that.” The $15 million upgrade added not just the theatre, but also 160 square metres of exhibition space, a rehearsal room that can be used as a small performance venue, and a full back of house area complete with dressing rooms, a green room, a loading dock and office space. That additional exhibition space will give the centre capacity to host a further 10 exhibitions per year as well as providing opportunities for multimedia art practices. The Centre will reopen on 21 August with four new exhibitions, while the theatre’s first performance, L’entreprise du Risque, will take place on 9-11 September. - Denholm Samaras

news National Science Week highlights LGBTIQA+ in STEM Members of the LGBTIQA+ community have been making waves in the STEM fields for several years, and a National Science Week event is looking to highlight that. Local podcast, Queer STEM History hosted by Len Gordon, aims to share stories of queer scientists throughout history and will be recording a live podcast as part of National Science Week, 15-23 August. Working alongside Canberra community organisation A Gender Agenda (AGA), a local panel of intersex, trans and gender diverse people who work or study in STEM fields will be highlighted. AGA events coordinator, Jesse Townrow, said the organisation was excited to take part in this year’s calendar of events. “We were really excited the National Science Week committee
reached out to us and to include specifically LGBTIQA+ organisations in this year’s program,” he said. “I think it’s super important we have this opportunity to reach out through our networks to uplift the voices of LGBTIQA+ people in STEM. “It can sometimes be a bit of an exclusive voice, a bit male dominated and not always highlighting all the diverse voices it has to offer.” The live recording will take place on Zoom, and will allow attendees to submit questions to the panel while they tune in. Those who wish to tune in live are asked to register online, and a script and recording will also be made available following the event. Mr Townrow said showing an array of diverse local panellists would be powerful in creating role models for the LGBTIQA+
community within the STEM field. “Being able to highlight a local panel of people with careers and interests in STEM could go a really long way to promote queer people in stem and as a welcoming, inclusive field,” he said. “Sometimes STEM is thought of as a straightforward organisation and, through talking to Len, there is so much more to the field than people think. “There is so much room for creativity and that is really attractive to our community and hopefully it will encourage people who might not feel comfortable or safe to know there are other people who have been there and have had a great fulfilling life in STEM.” The recording will take place on Tuesday 25 August 6-7.30pm and panellists are set to be announced toward the end of this week.
Local podcast, Queer STEM History hosted by Len Gordon, will record a live episode with a range of intersex, trans and gender diverse people working or studying in STEM as part of National Science Week.
Canberra Science Treasure Hunt Meanwhile, there is now a wait list for another popular National Science Week event, the Canberra Science Treasure Hunt, that will see teams disperse across the Capital this weekend, 22-23 August, exploring the ACT’s connections with science and history. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the number of participants has been limited to 13 teams each day. news Poll finds Canberrans consuming most alcohol at home An annual alcohol poll has shown three-quarters (76%) of ACT residents consume alcohol most frequently at home rather than in social settings such as pubs, clubs and restaurants. Taken before COVID-19 restrictions, the Annual Alcohol Poll 2020: Behaviours and Attitudes, conducted by YouGov Galaxy, found the ACT figures slightly above the national average of 73%. Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) CEO Caterina Giorgi said the trends shown are not surprising. “Despite what many of us assume, people who drink alcohol are more likely to do so at home – and this is true even before the lockdown measures,” she said. “This is the case whether people are younger or older, women or men, or living in major cities or regional areas.” The poll also found 67% of ACT residents reported to consuming the largest amount of alcohol on one occasion at home, in line with the national average. Ms Giorgi said these statistics were concerning, based on the affects of alcohol on several aspects of the community as a whole. “Drinking in the home is widespread, yet we don’t
often think about the harms from alcohol occurring in the home because they’re largely invisible,” she said. “Alcohol increases the severity and frequency of family violence and contributes to a range of cancers and alcohol dependence. These harms have significant negative impacts on children, families and whole communities.” The same poll found 17% of all Australians drink more than 10 standard drinks per week, while 39% reported drinking between one and 10 standard drinks per week. However, the poll reported one-third of Australians had reduced their alcohol consumption in the past 12 months; with 48% of those saying it was to be healthier. It also analysed online alcohol retail, finding of those who had ordered products, 23% had done it weekly and 44% had it delivered within two hours. “Retailers are pushing alcohol into homes at all hours, with delivery as soon as 30 minutes,” Ms Giorgi said. “These practices are contributing to riskier alcohol use, and common-sense measures such as introducing a two-hour delay between online orders and delivery are needed to prevent harm.” - Danielle Meddemmen
Athllon Drive plans released The ACT Government has released plans for Athllon Drive, with 600 metres of road between Shea Street and Melrose Drive in Phillip, and 2.4 kilometres between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive in Kambah to be duplicated. The plans detail upgrades including new traffic lights, a northbound bus lane, cycle lanes, an underpass under Sulwood Drive and new bus stops. The concept designs have also considered the future stages of light rail with a road network that would complement light rail operations. The ACT Government also announced further funding for the detailed design work for the project. More than 14,000 vehicles travel on Athllon Drive daily, and Roads Minister Chris Steel said the project could cut two minutes from the morning commute on R4 and R5 bus services. Born premature at 24 weeks, Sebastian Claessens had a tough entry into this world. His first six months were spent in intensive care, he had no movement in the left side of his body, and endured heart surgery, blood clots and severe brain damage. Despite being given only a 5% chance of survival, Sebastian is now a soccer-playing, musicloving, hip-hop-dancing 16-yearold, living with cerebral palsy. Sebastian’s dad Michael said the doctors had no idea if Sebastian would ever walk, or what sort of life he would be able to have. “But now he’s a happy and engaged kid,” Michael said. In Australia, one in 700 babies is diagnosed with cerebral palsy – a neurological disorder caused by damage to the brain during pregnancy or soon after birth and which affects a person’s body movement and muscle coordination. However, that has improved significantly from the incidence rate of 10 years ago which was one in every 400 babies. Funding for research and service provision comes in part from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s (CPA) annual fundraiser, STEPtember. Now in its tenth year, STEPtember challenges participants to take 10,000 steps a day for 28 days whilst soliciting donations for the cause. STEPtember is the CPA’s leading fundraiser, with more than 80,000 people around the country taking part. CPA corporate manager Kristie Steggles said this year’s STEPtember was even more important because it was their only fundraiser unaffected by COVID restrictions. “Anyone can do it, it’s not just
walking, you can do other things, you can even do housework – it’s inclusive.” STEPtember raised more than $7 million last year, and along with mobility equipment and support for individuals, the money also feeds into research, identifying at-risk babies, developing early intervention strategies, and plugging gaps in the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Kristie said it can take around 18 months for babies to be diagnosed which meant early therapy in the pre-diagnosis phase was crucial. “The research foundation is world-leading,” Kristie said. “We’re focused on the treatment, prevention, causes and cures.” Capital Chemist Group have supported the CPA for 13 years and donated around $150, 000 in equipment and $6 million cash and will have around 50 staff participating in STEPtember again this year. Capital Chemist community program manager Melita Flynn said they were “extremely proud” of their connection with CPA. “We know where the money goes, how it’s assisting, and we’re pleased to give back to our community,” Melita said. “It’s a great way to get your steps in and we like to have some fun and some competitions.” Sebastian’s older brother Max is participating in this year’s event, his dad will promote it and his mum, Stephanie, wants to raise awareness. Stephanie said cerebral palsy was a “lifetime situation” which required continual intervention to keep people mentally and physically healthy. David Hunter Memorial Lecture
GIVIT donation of the week: Mobile devices
ANTaR ACT is the local branch of ANTaR – Australia’s main non-Indigenous organisation for reconciliation, dedicated to supporting the rights of Indigenous people through public campaigns and advocacy. For the last 16 years, ANTaR has presented the David Hunter Memorial Lecture and this year it will go online due to Covid-19. They will present a free webinar on First Nations Treaties: A Matter of Justice on Thursday 27 August 6.15pm with keynote speaker Tony McAvoy SC. This will be the 17th annual lecture held in memory of David Hunter, an inspiring activist for reconciliation and Indigenous rights. It is one of a series of webinars being organised by ANTaR National, reshaping the National Treaties Summit, which was postponed due to Covid-19. Register online at david-hunter-memoriallecture2020.eventbrite.com.au or email info@antaract.org.au for more information.
A number of support organisations across the ACT are looking for per-loved mobile devices in good working condition which can be distributed to a range of clients. This is the number one requested item during the Covid-19 pandemic. With lockdowns, homes schooling and limited face-to-face support services, many families and individuals who were already doing it tough are struggling to maintain their day to day commitments. Donations of pre-loved mobile devices will go to support refugee families with multiple children undergoing remote learning or language studies, Indigenous Australians living in remote communities with limited access to education, and those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic (just to name a few recipients). Any mobile phones, tablets or laptop computers in good working order with charging cables that can be passed on to these very deserving individuals would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be delivered, collected by or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search “Mobile Devices” to view requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.
Share your community event. Email news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘HYH’ in the subject field. Deadline is 10 days prior to Thursday edition date.

Natural Fertility Awareness Week The theme for Natural Fertility Awareness Week, 17-23 August, is: Stay Connected with your Fertility – Get the Know-How. Stress can impact us in many ways – even the reproductive cycle can be affected. The Billings Ovulation Method can help women in any stage of their reproductive life, and its Fertility Pinpoint app does more than track menstrual cycles; it is an interactive teaching system that lets a woman have confidential contact with an accredited teacher of the Billings method to help her understand her hormone levels and identify infertility and fertility through her personal chart. It is a useful resource for those who live in remote areas and for busy city dwellers who are time-poor or in isolation. More info: www.billlings.life
Girl Guides launch new biscuits
For over 60 years, Girl Guide Biscuits have been sold to raise funds for new equipment, camps, outings, adventures and learning programs. In 2020, the iconic tradition is relaunching with a new modernised range which has been designed to represent the values of the organisation. The new range of biscuits officially launched in June, with new flavours, a new look and new sizing, but the same ultimate mission - empowering girls and young women through fun, friendship and adventure. The range consists of locally made, individually wrapped 50g biscuits which include: Anzac, Triple Choc, and Gluten-Free Lemon, Lime and Coconut (endorsed by Coeliac Australia). The impact of COVID-19 means typical face-to-face selling will be restricted so the biscuits are predominantly being sold online and can even be sent as a gift to loved ones via the Girl Guide Biscuits website. The first shipments will be made in mid-August. To purchase and find out more, visit girlguidebiscuits.com.au

GOAT Hydroponics does not only focus on hydroponics growing however. If you prefer to garden the traditional way, outside in soil, we also have a great variety of nutrients that can boost the growth of your plants, bonsai, vegetables, fruits and flowers.
CWM0135
Whether you are a seasoned green thumb or an enthusiastic beginner you will be excited to learn that GOAT Hydroponics has opened its doors in Mitchell this month. Growing plants hydroponically is a great way to produce fresh, healthy food in your own home. What is hydroponics you ask? Put simply, it is the growing of plants without soil. Hydroponic systems come with a number of benefits and are becoming a popular choice with people who are passionate about producing fresh food. For you at home, the advantage of hydroponic gardening is that you don’t have to fight weeds and most pests and you can also grow in small spaces, such as an apartment or empty corner of your home. Hydroponics is particularly convenient in a city like Canberra where seasons and outdoor elements can drastically affect your ability to successfully grow plants.

Schitt’s Creek box set To celebrate Acorn Media releasing the complete 12-disc set of Schitt’s Creek (M) on DVD on 26 August, Canberra Weekly has 4 x box sets (RRP $89.95) to give away. In Season 1, Johnny attempts to sell the town, Moira has a breakdown, David tries to maintain his posh lifestyle, and Alexis goes trolling for men. In Season 2, Johnny pursues some unusual business ventures, while Moira plunges into the local scene and the kids look for work. The indignities continue in Season 3 as the Roses contend with love triangles, movie auditions, ill-advised businesses and homework. Season 4 sees Alexis put her education to use, David’s love life hits a snag, Moira deals with a morbid rumour and Johnny gives the motel all he’s got. By Season 5, the Roses are fi nally thriving in Schitt’s Creek so in Season 6, when they fi nally face the decision to stay or leave, it’s much harder than expected.

Cook the ramen noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain and set aside. Next, add the dashi to 250ml (1 cup) of water and whisk with a fork until dissolved. Pour into a saucepan, add the stock and miso paste and place over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, mixing well with a wooden spoon to ensure the miso paste is fully dissolved. Taste and, if you find it too salty, add an extra 3 tablespoons of water. Add the snow peas, mushrooms, spring onion and chilli and garlic paste to the broth and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the snow peas are tender-crisp and the mushrooms have softened a little. Stir in the bok choy and cook until just wilted. Pop the noodles into a bowl and pour the broth and veggies over the top. Serve with the desired toppings.

Book talk
This week, Jeff Popple reviews three novels about deadly podcasts! More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com
The Suicide House by Charlie Donlea
The Night Swim by Megan Goldin
Final Cut by S. J. Watson
Bantam, $32.99
Michael Joseph, $32.99
Text, $32.99
Donlea is one of my favourite crime authors and is very adept at weaving true crime elements into his entertaining novels. In The Suicide House, the detective pairing of Rory Moore and famed profiler Lane Phillips are hired to assist on a true crime podcast about the massacre of two students by a teacher at an elite Indiana boarding school. The case is officially closed, but suspicions are raised by the string of suicides that have occurred in its wake. Donlea excels in this sort of multiple viewpoint crime novel which quickly grabs the reader’s attention and keeps them happily reading until the surprising climax.
Australian author Megan Goldin burst onto the American crime scene last year with her bestselling chiller, The Escape Room. She has now returned with the even better The Night Swim, about a popular true crime podcaster, Rachel Krall, who goes to a small North Carolina coastal town to cover a controversial rape trial. Whilst there she becomes caught up in a cold case investigation about the drowning of a teenager 25 years before. This well plotted and immensely engaging novel provides plenty of twists and suspense, while also exploring themes of abuse, small town mentality and sexual stereotyping. Highly recommended.
In S. J. Watson’s Final Cut a film maker, Alex, heads to the decaying Yorkshire seaside town of Blackwood Bay to shoot a documentary about the former bustling community and the disappearance of two girls years before. The locals, however, are suspicious of her intentions and Alex soon finds herself entangled in an old mystery and under threat. Watson skilfully combines the usual crime novel tropes of dual timelines, a potentially unreliable female narrator, cold cases and the current fascination with true crime documentaries to produce an intriguing novel that steadily draws you in and keeps you interested. An enjoyable mystery.
Now showing Made in Italy (M)
At a London gallery, gallerist Jack (Micheál Richardson) is told by his estranged wife that her family is selling the gallery from under him. Desperate to keep his career, Jack takes his estranged, widowed, artist father Robert (Liam Neeson) to Tuscany to restore their family villa for a quick sale. A feature directorial debut, the movie holds absolutely no surprises for its audience. Like A Good Year, we know exactly where we are going to end up. The question is, how are we going to get there? While the uptight Jack loves his upmarket life in dark and dreary London, there is no competition between the two locales. It becomes apparent, however, that selling the Tuscan villa is Jack’s chance to quickly circumvent emotionally resolving the tragic loss of his mother. It is,
however, Robert’s hesitation to let go of his pain, represented in a violent red and black mural in the villa’s ‘living’ room, that adds to the conflict. In Tuscany, a stern real estate agent (Lindsay Duncan) and local chef Natalia (Valeria Bilello) all serve to rehabilitate the leads. However, it is their inevitable confrontation, symbolised in the renovation of the dilapidated house, that holds the keys to reconciling their relationship and their lives going forward. Verdict: Cheesy and predictable, with questionable acting on the part of Richardson, Made in Italy would be harmless fun if not for the knowledge that the leads are real-life father and son, sharing a similar, tragic loss as their onscreen counterparts. 2.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net
Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson reprise their real-life relationship as father and son in Made in Italy.

Don’t ‘waist’ time: summer abs Spring is nearly here, and that means summer is only a few months away! So, if you want to tone up and get that flat tummy, it’s time start working! I know it’s hard to find big chunks of time to work out, but if you can find just 10 minutes twice a day to work on your abs and posture, you will be stronger and standing taller before you know it! And you’ll be a step ahead of everyone else before summer arrives. Even just sitting up straight at your desk will help your core/abs and, in turn, your posture. Be aware
and conscious of how you sit for long periods of time; it’s very easy to slump forward and roll your shoulders, and this can cause issues for your back, shoulders, neck and hips. To help with your posture when sitting down for long periods try this: Sit up straight and lift your rib cage with a full breath in; Press your back flat against the back of the chair; Let your breath out slowly for a count of 3-5 seconds; And be mindful that your shoulders are not slumped forward. Try this for five minutes and see how your posture has changed!
Workout: posture and abs • Warm up: 5 mins jogging or skipping • 20 x back rolls: Lying on your back, lift your knees to your chest and place your hands out to the side, palms flat on the ground. Keeping your shoulders flat to the ground, roll your knees from left to right. • 20 x alternate twists (seated): While seated, put your feet together and raise them off the floor. Leaning back slightly, rotate your trunk from left to right. Make it harder: Use a med ball Make it easier: Keep your feet on the ground
both legs from the ground up to 90 degrees, and lower back down to the count of 3-5. • 1 min plank: Lie face down and elevate your body weight onto your elbows and toes, keeping your elbows under your shoulders, and hold! • 20 x standing twist: Stand feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees slightly. Place a broomstick over your shoulders with your hands holding on, and twist left to right. • 20 x hanging knee raise: Hang with your arms straight and your feet off the ground. Raise your knees to hip height and lower back down.
• 20 x straight leg raise: Lying on your back, place your hands flat on the ground by your side. Raise

Make a statement Accent chairs are more than just functional furniture – they’re an opportunity to inject brighter, deeper, more adventurous colours, styles and patterns into your home. WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER
Less is more According to Early Settler’s furniture buyer Monica Porter, “less is defi nitely more” when it comes to choosing a statement chair. A single chair with an accent colour or eye-catching style is all that’s needed to punctuate a room and make a design statement.

Stylish family living Waramanga 6 Bidia Place This beautiful family home sits in the established Weston Creek suburb of Waramanga and is packed with luxury features and inclusions. Harcourts Brindabella principal, Jeremy Maher, says “this is a rare buying opportunity to secure a luxury home in an established suburb with features aplenty”. He says the home has been expanded to become a large family residence and an “entertainers’ delight”. Maher says the stylish home is versatile and would suit a range of requirements, “from a young and growing family or even a retired couple who enjoy entertaining and have a need for extra storage”. In a tightly held cul-de-sac, 6 Bidia Place boasts a clever, open-plan design, and includes a number of living spaces both inside and out to suit every need. The lower split levels are home to all four bedrooms, the master with an “enormous” walk-in robe and ensuite, as well as a spacious, modern laundry and a rumpus room with kitchenette, bathroom and storage.
The gourmet kitchen truly is the heart of the home, with gas cooktop, double oven and a rangehood flush with the ceiling to maximise the views from the kitchen window to the rolling hills beyond. Outside, the beautiful and lush gardens are home to a covered entertaining area, and the fourcar garage with internal access is perfect for car enthusiasts. Maher says Waramanga is highly sought-after, and the home would be perfect for a “wide variety of buyers”. “It sits in a beautiful cul-de-sac location, walking distance to shops and schools and an easy fiveminute drive to Woden.”

Weekly market wrap Canberra values increase, rental vacancy declines Maintaining an active role in the property market has provided an opportunity to hear some interesting perspectives on how people perceive market conditions. In one camp, there are people who see current conditions as ideal for being decisive. They have noticed the lack of opportunities and understand demand across the market makes buying competitive. Another group of participants seem to be holding onto hope that

conditions will deteriorate, allowing them to purchase for significantly less than current pricing. For a couple of weeks in April it appeared as though the second cohort could have been right. Since then, market tailwinds have started to assist values increase in Canberra. Without digging too deeply, these tailwinds can be seen by suburb record sale prices being exceeded during the month in McKellar, Moncrieff, Theodore, Hawker and Duffy. Sale prices demonstrate how lack of quality stock has been creating upward pressure on values in the middle band of the market, values which sit between $800,000 and $2,000,000. Strong auction clearance rates, often exceeding 80%, are further evidence of robust buyer demand. In the new market, the $25,000

HomeBuilder Grant has proven to be a driving catalyst of buying decisions. Feedback from purchasers who’ve met the eligibility criteria has been the HomeBuilder Grant represents a significant proportion of purchase price and, in the context of required time to save a similar amount, it made sense to take advantage of it. Eventual owner occupiers who don’t meet the eligibility criteria can still receive benefit by paying no duty on new properties priced up to $500,000 or receive $11,400 discount on their payable duty for purchase prices between $500,001 and $750,000. The rental market in Canberra has proven to be exceptionally resilient. SQM Research reported Canberra has the highest capital city asking rents nationally and a steadily declining vacancy rate, now 1%. Louis Christopher, Managing Director of SQM Research, said “rental vacancy rates for most capital cities recorded a decline over the course of July”. “We are now observing a clear trend of reduced rental vacancies in outer suburban locations and

regional locations around Australia. However, when looking into the numbers it is clear there are still very elevated levels of rental vacancies in the inner-city locations. We believe there has been a move towards outer regional living and away from high density areas. This very likely has been as a result of fears surrounding coronavirus and the ability for many employees (particularly in the corporate sector) to work remotely.” Mr Christopher was one of the first market analysts to use coronavirus as a catalyst to forecast property values would significantly decline, up to 30% in one case. His current analysis on migration and employment trends would increase market demand and support property values increasing in Canberra; especially as Canberra provides the benefits of regional living with the connectivity and amenity of a city.
REIA names new CEO The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has named Anna Neelagama as the organisation’s new CEO. Ms Neelagama said she is excited to be working to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the property sector in a “post-pandemic world”. “I see real estate businesses as the heart of every Australian city and town, and a major contributor to the economic and social wellbeing of this country.” Ms Neelagama is replacing Jock Kreitals in the role of CEO, who was farewelled by the
organisation in February. “Earlier in the year REIA embarked on a recruitment process for a new CEO and we received over 100 applicants for the role. We eventually decided upon Anna and I’m delighted to announce her appointment,” said REIA president Adrian Kelly. “Anna definitely is experienced in the areas of policy and advocacy, which, amongst other facets, are crucial focuses that REIA works within for the benefit of all estate agents and their employees across Australia”.

celebrity birthday ELIZABETH DEBICKI 24 August 1990 The next 12 months for Elizabeth is a time of tying up loose ends and when relationships and associations that have outlived their purpose will be completed and left behind. Elizabeth will be getting involved with people who come from totally different cultures or backgrounds to her own. Love is very much on the cards and she will certainly be inspired to be creative with her work.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
This week, you will want to take on new leadership roles and soak up more attention. You are far more likely to take matters into your own hands rather than collaborating with others. There is going to be a strong urge to show the world how strong you really are.
You’ve been learning a lot about where your true security and safety comes from and it’s high time to be your own nurturer. You can learn to love and appreciate your sensitive side without feeling the sense of being overwhelmed that often goes along with a strong emotional nature.
Visitors will beat a path to your door this week. Family commitments will suddenly accelerate and there will be labours of love every step of the way! The company of someone you can’t wait to see, or a meaningful
A breakthrough with a financial undertaking will clear the path to success! There will also be a major turning point in a difficult relationship or situation. The Leo Sun is shining its light on the health area of your chart and you will need to take a bit more care.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
Uranus in your own sign certainly tests your flexibility as sudden family requests or changes of plans land in your lap. Just as you think everything is all settled on the home and family front, along comes something to upset the apple cart. Patience and flexibility will see you through.
An opportunity on the job or a lucky break with a difficult task will open the way to surge ahead. There will be benefits financially but working overtime may become the new norm. This is your time to shine! You are the star, the producer, and the director of the zodiac.
Going further afield or exploring new places, while keeping health restrictions in mind, will be fun and educational, while stimulating encounters will also be most informative. A surprising turn of events will change the direction of a relationship or alter the course of some new plans.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
You prefer to keep things on the light side yet ever since March, you have been initiated into the depths of relationships. If things have felt out of control and the word ‘powerless’ comes to mind, know that it’s about trusting and surrendering to a higher power greater than yourself.
It’s time to expect the unexpected this week. For example, an old flame may reappear and want to rekindle things, but the past is the past and it is time to move forwards. On the other hand, something you have been wanting in a relationship could finally eventuate.
It’s been a challenging year so far and you’ve probably honed your skills and learned new techniques in your job. Expensive, meaningful and useful new possessions will stretch the budget but add to your quality of life. A financial or business venture will gain from thorough attention to detail.
A job opening or wave of extra work will show the world more of what you can do and increase your income. Pouring energy into a health or physical pursuit will make you stronger, fitter and healthier. As a result, you’ll be motivated to set new goals.
emotional exchange, will be a real joy.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The focus is on your relationships and there will be lot of people pulling at you wanting your attention. However, it is important for you to sort out exactly what it is you want, which may be easier said than done. Your search for authenticity requires some solitude.
