This week... From the editor Dear readers, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. For most of us, life is not business as usual in 2020, like it was in the ‘Before Times’ … before Covid. So much has changed, even my emails and face-to-face interactions with people look and feel different now. Before, I was a handshaker, a hugger or cheek kisser – depending on the occasion and the greetee. With emails, I’ve always aimed to adopt a polite tone, sometimes sprinkled with humour; but now the tone is more circumspect, mindful it’s likely the recipient is finding the going tougher than usual in these highly unusual times. A New York Times column suggests bearing in mind “the three core standards of proper etiquette and protocol: respect, honesty and consideration”. Do “an emotional proofread” of your email and try to imagine what you would feel if you received it. Consider what you know about this person, your relationship with them and what they might be going through. A kind, genuine and straightforward check-in at the beginning (and a thoughtful sign-off) can possibly save unintended anguish. Reasons to be grateful this week include all the essential workers and volunteers who keep our community ticking along. Thanks for reading my column, and I hope you’re as well as you can be in these trying times. - Julie Samaras

The cost of constructing Woden’s new CIT campus, public transport interchange and multi-bed youth foyer will total $250-300 million, with works due to be completed by 2025. Image supplied.

$300M public investment in Woden over next four years A new flagship CIT facility, public transport interchange and a multibed Youth Foyer will all be built in Woden over the next four years. With the price tag on these works totalling $250-300 million, construction is expected to create at least 520 jobs and will commence

on the public transport interchange mid-2021, and on CIT Woden in 2022. Students are expected to begin studying at the new campus at the start of the 2025 academic year. The new CIT Woden campus will support up to 6,500 students annually and feature a host of state-

of-the-art learning environments to help prepare students across multiple fields such as IT, hospitality and design. An on-campus multi-bed Youth Foyer will also be delivered as part of the project, providing integrated learning, accommodation and support for young people who are committed to education and training but are at risk of homelessness. The ageing Woden bus interchange will be replaced with one that will feature more bus stops, more bus layovers supporting future increases in services, and a new Light Rail station on Callam Street. The Woden Valley Community Council (WVCC), while welcoming the project broadly, believe there are “much better sites available” for the CIT campus than the proposed location, which is to the south and east of Geocon’s 18- and 26-storey dual building Grand Central Towers development. WVCC president Jenny Stewart told Canberra Weekly they also want to ensure the new transport interchange is adequately connected with the rest of the Town Centre. “We’d be wanting to see much more specific ideas about the bus

interchange and how it will work … until we get that it’s hard to know what we’re talking about. “No one would object to the current interchange being superseded … We’d hope there will be real community consultation about the redevelopment of the interchange, not just token community consultation, which was all we got in relation to the new CIT.” Ms Stewart also raised concerns over parking regarding the new CIT campus, given it will bring thousands of people to Woden once operational. ACT Minister for Tertiary Education, Chris Steel, said the major project was designed to rejuvenate the Woden Town Centre. “This project will create a new front door to Woden, with a well-lit pedestrian boulevard connecting the interchange, CIT campus, the square and Westfield for a more vibrant and welcoming Town Centre.” With numerous private developments and major infrastructure projects in Woden either under construction or in the planning process, the Town Centre is set for a dramatic facelift over the next five years.

Proposed Defence Housing development sparks concern A proposed Defence Housing Australia (DHA) development in and around the critically endangered Lawson North grasslands has local environmental groups concerned for the health of the area’s biodiversity. In an open letter to DHA, more than 100 stakeholders, including conservation groups, scientists, land managers and volunteers from the Canberra region, have called for a reassessment of the proposal. The 100-hectare site of natural temperate grasslands (bounded by Lawson South, Ginninderra Creek and Baldwin Drive) has been listed as critically endangered since 1996 and is one of just 13 remaining significantly-sized areas of grasslands in the ACT. Conservation Council ACT 8

canberraweekly.com.au

executive director Helen Oakey said the grasslands adjacent to the proposed development could face construction debris, increased foot traffic, domestic rubbish, weeds, garden-escapees spreading, and domestic animals. “The site provides habitat for bird species protected under the Commonwealth EPBC [Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation] Act such as the Superb Parrot, and other bird species protected under ACT legislation like the Scarlet Robin,” Ms Oakey said. She said developments of this nature were required to offset any environmental harm with a project of environmental benefit, but due to the cumulative loss of nationwide biodiversity, that would be difficult.

“In the context of Australia’s biodiversity crisis and giving consideration to the contribution Lawson North makes to our critically endangered grassy ecological communities, the destruction proposed by this development is unacceptable.” Friends of Grasslands president Geoff Robertson said the second stage of the proposal on the old Belconnen naval transmission station was deeply concerning. “Stage two will leave only a narrow strip of grasslands in the east that will be very vulnerable to impacts from the adjacent residential areas, especially as there are few areas of urban open space identified in the development footprint to encourage residents not to use the

grasslands for recreational use. “Environmentalists, scientists, and the volunteer community who have signed onto this letter are clear that this proposal is unacceptable, and we urge DHA to reconsider the development to ensure ongoing protection, conservation and enhancement of what are nationally important ecological communities under Commonwealth law,” Mr Robertson said. A DHA spokesperson said the development was now in the planning and design stage and they continue to work closely with the National Capital Authority, ACT Government and local community to implement a plan that protects the long-term viability of significant areas of the site. - Cassandra Power

news Business groups call for workers to return to the office With the ACT COVID-free (as at 25 August), calls from Canberra business groups to get workers back into the office have been met with the ACT Government recommending people continue working from home “if it works for them”. While the increase in work-from-home arrangements has led to more people frequenting their local shops or utilising online food delivery services, owners of corporate eateries and other small businesses located close to business parks or offices have taken a long-lasting financial hit, even in the wake of easing restrictions. A corporate eatery servicing a Symonston business park, Red Baron’s customer base is predominantly neighbouring office workers in Symonston and Fyshwick. Red Baron owner-operator Peter Vidovich said having people back at nearby workplaces would be a big boost for their café. “If everyone comes back, it’d be perfect. We’d be implementing other stuff as well, like getting our liquor licence and then kicking off Christmas parties to really take advantage of the space,” he said.

“There’s no point us sinking more money and trying to get that infrastructure in if we’re not going to get a return on it.” After dipping to under 10% of their normal trade back in March/April, they estimate about 30% of nearby workers are back in the office now, with many fluctuating between days worked at home and in the workplace. According to a Property Council survey, just over 40% of offices in the ACT are currently occupied. Canberra Business Chamber CEO Graham Catt said getting back into the office would be a simple yet powerful way to help local business across the ACT. “The best way to support business is through genuine demand for goods and services. When public servants and others are in the office, their daily spending provides an important boost to local cafés, shops, restaurants, retail stores, transport providers and many other businesses,” he said. When quizzed on the matter, ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith restated the current health advice, which recommends “people

to continue to work from home if that works for them and for their employer”. “What we’ve seen in other places and including in Victoria, is that workplaces can be a significant source of new cases and new clusters, and that’s because people spend a long time in the workplace,” she said. “The last thing our hospitality industry needs is new cases and new clusters that mean that we actually have to go backwards on our restrictions and actually further restrict their capacity to operate.” Ms Stephen-Smith said she was sympathetic to the plight of the various small businesses reliant on office workers. “For the workers in that sector and for the small business owners who rely on passing foot traffic, it is absolutely a very challenging time. “I think this is a worthwhile discussion to be had … This is a balancing act of the cumulative risk of bringing people together, enabling our economy to continue to move forward, and not having to step backwards,” she said. - Denholm Samaras

$12M for Amaroo School The ACT Government has said the Amaroo School’s senior campus will receive a more-than $12 million expansion that will permanently create a further 200 places, as part of the ACT Government’s $400 million announcement for schools over the next four years. Expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2022 school year, the expansion will see new general and specialist learning areas for students in years seven to 10, refurbished science and technology buildings, and a covered walkway

to the library. The expansion will increase the Amaroo School’s P-10 capacity to 2,319 students. ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry said demand is increasing for public school enrolments in the ACT. “We used to build one public school every four years, now we’re building four,” she said. Ms Berry said the ACT Government would spend $17 million on transportable classrooms to meet this increased demand.

Emissions to power homes New landfill gas generators at Mugga Lane Tip will provide over 5,000 ACT homes with electricity, capturing emissions from organic material in landfill. Around 5,700 homes will be supplied with electricity from the generators, delivered through a contract with LGI Limited. Recycling and Waste Reduction Minister Chris Steel said while the ACT Government is looking to reduce and recycle organic food waste to divert it from landfill, it is still important to capture as much

of the emissions created by organic waste that ends up in landfill as possible. “Each year 140,000 tonnes of organic waste goes to landfill in the ACT, which in the anaerobic environment, turns into methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide,” he said. The project would increase the efficiency of capturing the emissions, and the estimated energy supplied by the landfill would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 120,000 tonnes per year.

The brand-new Dickson nurse-led Walk-in Centre opened its doors on Wednesday 26 August, providing free treatment for minor injuries and illness 365 days a year. The Inner North Walk-in Centre is the fifth such facility servicing Canberra, complementing those in Tuggeranong, Weston Creek (currently only for COVID testing), West Belconnen and Gungahlin. Co-located with the Community Health Centre in Dickson, the new Walk-in Centre includes multi-use treatment rooms that can also be used for community health services such as podiatry

and footcare, maternal and child health services, and one-on-one appointments with nurses. The ACT Government invested more than $10 million towards the Centre’s construction and operation. It is being staffed by 16 additional nurses and an administration team of four. More than 70 nurses and clinicians work across the ACT’s five Walk-in Centres. Since 2014, the Centres have treated more than 282,000 patients, and presentations continue to grow year on year with more than 67,000 in 2019.

news Pre-polling encouraged in upcoming ACT election The ACT Electoral Commission will be encouraging pre-polling in the upcoming 2020 ACT Legislative Assembly election, following an announcement on the extension of the ACT Public Health Emergency. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith announced last week (Thursday 20 August), the ACT Public Health Emergency would be extended until 19 November, following a second wave of cases in Victoria and NSW. Electoral Commissioner, Damian Cantwell AM, said while the extension wouldn’t impact on planning, they would be focusing on COVID-safe guidelines to carry out the 2020 ACT election. “It is not anticipated that the extension of the ACT Public Health Emergency will have any impact on the planning for or the conduct of the 2020 ACT Legislative Assembly election,” he said. “The ACT Electoral Commission continues to be informed by ongoing advice from the ACT Chief Health Officer in the delivery of the

election, which will be conducted under COVIDsafe provisions throughout the voting period from 28 September to 17 October.” Safety measures include strict hygiene methods, electronic voting terminal disinfection after each use, and single-use pencils. The Elections ACT website will also include information on numbers of voters at various polling locations to assist in making a decision on the safest time to visit. Mr Cantwell said pre-polling would be encouraged from Monday 28 September. “The ACT Electoral Commission is encouraging all voters to vote early in the period 28 September to 16 October 2020 to further enhance their COVID safety and that of the electoral staff, political stakeholders and the broader community,” he said. “Eighty-two polling places will be available on the final day of voting, 17 October.” There will be 15 early voting centres available

Year on year, the amount we have been donating to our charities big and small has been rising,” he says. “This year, we were excited to present Canberrabased organisations with a total of $73,800 from Beyond Bank because of their supporters.” Local groups such as the Domestic Violence Crisis Service, Dementia Australia, the Newborn Intensive Care Foundation and youth athletic groups such as Cricket ACT and Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club were all delighted to receive the extra funding to help their organisations continue to flourish. “And as we all know, seeing the impact even a small amount of money can make to local community organisations is a pretty special feeling. “So, thank you Canberra for helping us build better, stronger and more inclusive communities. We simply couldn’t do it without you!” says Mr Neal. Satellite imagery was taken before (left) and after the devastating 2019-20 bushfire season by Australian space company, Geospatial Intelligence Pty Ltd, and could now be the key for government planning of future fire risk.

Satellite images show full extent of Black Summer bushfire damage Satellite imagery released following the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfire season shows the full extent of devastating damage through NSW and could be the key to mitigating future fire risk. Australian space company Geospatial Intelligence Pty Ltd took high-resolution images during 2019 and then immediately after the bushfires in 2020. Geospatial Intelligence Pty Ltd CEO, Mr Rob

16

canberraweekly.com.au

Coorey, said the data had now been passed on to the NSW Government as a resource for recovery efforts and future planning. “It isn’t like our human eye; we can use computers to analyse these images in very fine detail and see the effects of vegetation,” he said. “With this data you can look at pre and post fire to determine if the land was already moisture stressed and whether the intensity of these fires was

related to something to do with the land beforehand. “Then you can ask ‘is there a better way of using this information before the fire season? Is there a better way in planning our infrastructure?’.” The images now show the full extent of fire scars, and vegetation, property and infrastructure damage following the bushfires, and during recovery. Data could also be of assistance in analysing fire behaviour, intensity, and what impact external factors have on this. Mr Coorey said in light of the current Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, it was important to see governments making use of satellite technology. “Our ability to task satellites daily to image in high resolution, large areas of the States and Territories, provides an incredible capability to government and industry for monitoring natural disasters in near real time,” he said. “It is encouraging to see that the NSW Government, along with a growing number of other government departments and private companies, are appreciating the value of very high-resolution imagery technology and Australian capability, and the efficiencies it can deliver in their particular undertakings.” - Danielle Meddemmen

Neighbourhood Watch ACT president Laurie Blackall (right) handed over keys to Havelock Housing CEO Andrew Rowe on Tuesday 25 August, for a self-contained unit that can now be used as additional social housing.

Havelock House regains unit to house someone in need Havelock Housing Association will soon be able to offer an extra self-contained unit to the Canberra community, thanks to Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) ACT.

The community organisation has been occupying what used to be a caretaker’s unit at Havelock House for storage and the occasional meeting, to aid their work in

community crime reduction and engagement. Havelock Housing CEO Andrew Rowe admitted he was nervous to approach NHW ACT president Laurie Blackall about the matter but was pleased to find him completely on board. “It started when one of our residents became pregnant and we were trying to find support for her. There is a severe shortage of social housing in Canberra and that was the prompt to reach out to Neighbourhood Watch and start a discussion about taking (the unit) back,” Mr Rowe said. “I was a little bit cautious or wary. I thought they might have been a bit resistant, but Laurie was immediately receptive to the idea and told me he had already been thinking about it himself.” Currently, Havelock House has 101 bedrooms, 30 of which are a student co-op and the rest in the style of four- to eight-bedroom units

with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The self-contained unit brings the total to 102 bedrooms, which are provided to those in the community on a very low income, with a disability, or with high and complex service needs. Mr Blackall said Neighbourhood Watch was more than happy to be handing back the keys, to see the unit used for its intended purpose. “It became morally difficult for us that we were taking up a house that someone could be living in,” he said. “We agreed it was the better use of the space and Andrew was very kind to offer us storage space here and use of the Federation Room for our occasional meetings.” The self-contained one-bedroom flat is currently receiving a new lick of paint, new carpet, and undergoing general maintenance and is expected to house someone within the month. - Danielle Meddemmen

Summerfield advertising moment

Get ‘unstuck’ with Invest+RetireTM A winning formula for parents and children alike It’s a common problem – it was before COVID-19 and it will likely be an even greater problem after COVID-19: Mum and Dad cannot afford the retirement home that is best for them. A home where they can have a full sense of community, be with like-minded people, and ideally in a fresh clean country atmosphere, all of which is on offer at Summerfield Estate in Braidwood. Mum and Dad deserve the best, and of course their children want to help them. The issue is, the purchase of a home in many retirement villages comes with hefty exit fees, you might not own the land and the home freehold cannot be financed effectively. Often Mum and Dad, or the in-laws, have some cash, just not enough to secure what they really want. On the other hand, the adult children may have good jobs and are earning good income but may not have substantial cash ready to be able to help out. Everyone is stuck! So, how do you get ‘unstuck’ for everybody’s benefit? Could the parents and children work together, where the children have a cash flow positive investment and the parents the home they want? It is important to remember with financial matters to consult your financial adviser about your individual circumstances. Let’s take a look at an example scenario using a home at Summerfield Estate, with an average purchase price of $600,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-car villa, which is fully disabledcompliant if required. Being freehold, with no exit fees and no sale restrictions, the home can be borrowed against just like any other

property. However, Mum and Dad (let’s call them Beth and John), do not have a regular servicing income that’s high enough to become a borrower, but they do have around $350,000 in savings and super, and receive the Age Pension. This is where the Invest+RetireTM framework could be adapted for their personal circumstance. Their son and daughter-in-law (Scott and Miriam), both 48, have good jobs, earning a combined income of $130,000. Scott and Miriam own their home but have a mortgage and have saved up $100,000. They also have their super. This could be a win-win scenario, with these basic steps: Step 1: Beth and John visit their financial planner or adviser for advice on their personal circumstances. Step 2: Scott and Miriam call their mortgage broker who runs the numbers and says they can get a 70% loan and borrow $440,000 at a current interest rate of 3%. They will need a $190,000 cash deposit for the purchase. Step 3: Scott and Miriam request BMT Depreciation Consultants to provide a full new property depreciation analysis. Step 4: Scott and Miriam check the numbers: $170 per-week cash flow positive and at a capital growth of 4%, it has over a 10% per-annum compound annualised return. Step 5: Beth and John lend Scott and Miriam, with a formal loan agreement, an amount of $130,000. Step 6: Scott and Miriam provide $60,000 of their $100,000 savings, without touching the equity in their

home. They now have the $190,000 cash to settle the freehold Summerfield villa and all proceeds for the contract, valuation and settlement. Step 7: Beth and John pay $500 perweek rent to Scott and Miriam.

Canberra’s push to join the A-League The Capital Region Football Collective have submitted a bid to the Football Federation of Australia this week, for the ACT’s very own A-League licence. Backed by a European investment group, a successful bid would mean a locally based team in the national competition. While Canberra has been overlooked in previous expansions of the competition, a successful bid would see a Canberra team as early as the 2021-22 season. The European investment group is wanting the deal locked in within the next four to six weeks.

Brumbies back on winning train The Plus500 Brumbies have regained their winning stride, after defeating the Waratahs 38-11

last weekend. The Canberra side had been undefeated in the Super Rugby AU comp until their round 6 match against the Melbourne Rebels, but came out fighting at GIO Stadium Canberra after their bye the previous week. The win saw the team reclaim the top spot on the ladder, now two points ahead of the Queensland Reds, with an extra game up their sleeve. The Brumbies will face the Western Force at GIO Stadium Canberra in round 9 this weekend, Friday 28 August 7.05pm. In other Brumbies news, Cadeyrn Neville has locked in to two more seasons with the Canberra side. Neville started with the team in 2020 after three years in the Japanese Top League. He has previously played for the Melbourne Rebels and Queensland Reds. The 31-year-old will now be at the club until the end of 2022.

Canberra Kart race meeting The Canberra Kart Racing Club is encouraging interested newcomers to attend its next race meeting this weekend, 30 August. Public Trustee for the ACT advertising moment

The gift that keeps on giving What a year 2020 has been so far. Not surprisingly, reports from Philanthropy Australia say many Australian charities are facing a battle to survive. Fundraising activity is grinding to a halt, staff are being laid off and volunteering has slowed. These changes are also impacting significantly on the services the philanthropy sector can provide to support the most vulnerable members of our community get through COVID-19. Other sources report expected losses in the charity sector to run into hundreds of millions of dollars, with many organisations already struggling financially. Charities have called on governments to provide substantial, simple and swift cash grants to support frontline causes whose role it is to help knit communities together. In Australia, there are 56,000 charities operating, many of whom rely solely on the goodwill of others for their funding. This can be heartbreaking and backbreaking for these charities. You will find that a lot of their effort and resources go into fundraising and financial management. These severe peaks and troughs in any industry can be detrimental; however, there is a solution that we

as regular people can do to help support charities. This is where the ACT’s GreaterGood Foundation comes into play. Established in 2003, GreaterGood is the ACT’s only public ancillary fund with over $22 million in accumulated capital and having distributed more than $10 million to charities operating and providing benefit in our own local community and beyond. As GreaterGood is essentially an endowment fund, all funds are collectively invested through the Public Trustee and Guardian’s growth investment strategy using the same fund manager as ACT Treasury. GreaterGood is administered by the Public Trustee and Guardian, a permanent ACT Territory Authority, that will always be there to ensure that your fund is safe and keeps working. By establishing your own charitable account within GreaterGood, your charity will receive perpetual income and can rely on that income every year. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has made provision for private and public ancillary funds. These funds allow the tax-efficient pooling of money that is managed or held to make distributions to other entities.

A solution to the funding crisis facing charities

Through GreaterGood, you can establish your own mini ‘foundation’ with the significant advantage of no cost to you and the ability to benefit whichever charities you wish.

For philanthropic purposes, this facility provides a link between people who want to give and organisations that can receive tax-deductible donations (these organisations are known as Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) Category 1). These funds provide a permanent source of income for DGRs. GreaterGood is accredited by the ATO as a DGR Category 2 and is a registered Charity with the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission. The difference between Category 1 and Category 2 DGRs is that a Category 1 is known as a “doing DGR”; in a simplified sense, they are organisations that carry out charitable works and use tax-deductible donations to fund these activities. Organisations with Category 2 status, like GreaterGood, are often called “giving DGRs” as their role is to distribute benefit to Category 1 DGRs.

Through GreaterGood, you can establish your own mini ‘foundation’ with all the bells and whistles of a McGrath-style foundation but with the significant advantage of no cost to you and the ability to benefit whichever charities you wish. Establishing your own fund under GreaterGood is as simple as settling an amount of money to your own personally named fund within GreaterGood, either now or in your Will. GreaterGood preserves and invests the amount settled to produce a permanent source of income for the benefit and support of your recommended charities. GreaterGood facilitates charitable giving in many ways, all with the aim of maximising the amount the charity receives while giving them a yearly donation they can rely on. To find out more, visit greatergood.org.au or call GreaterGood on 6207 9800.

What’ll we do on Wattle Day?

GIVIT donation of the week: Baby essentials An organisation that supports children who are entering into emergency care is looking for items to add to their emergency Go Bags. When children are transferred into a new living situation because their current household is no longer a safe environment, the transfer can take place at any hour of the day. This leaves the foster/emergency care family with little time to prepare for the child’s arrival. The organisation creates Go Bags, which include all essential items for the child and guardian to begin their time together with ease and comfort. The items required include nappy cream, baby powder, baby wash, baby lotion, and brush and comb set. All items must be small in size, new and unopened. Your generous donation of these essential items will ensure a contented and peaceful transition for these very deserving young children. Donations can be delivered, collected by or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search “Baby Essentials” to view requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or dropoff. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Father’s Day feast Food writer Libby Kimber this week brings you some simple yet showstopping dishes to treat Dad for lunch or dinner.

Vince’s slow-roasted lamb shoulder with paprika and honey Images and text from The Ethical Omnivore by Laura Dalrymple and Grant Hilliard, photography by Alan Benson, Murdoch Books RRP $39.99. 2–2.2kg square-cut lamb shoulder on the bone 1 Tbsp olive oil 2 large brown onions, diced 3 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped 1 tsp sweet paprika Finely grated zest and juice of 2 lemons 1 Tbsp honey 800g tomatoes, harvested in season and frozen (or use tinned) 1 cinnamon stick 1 handful herbs from the garden (mint, rosemary, thyme, flat-leaf parsley, oregano) 1-1.5 litres (4-6 cups) chicken stock or water

Preheat oven to 100°C. Season lamb shoulder with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat olive oil in a large cast-iron saucepan over medium heat, add onion and garlic and cook gently, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes until softened. Add paprika, lemon zest and honey, and stir to coat. Place seasoned lamb shoulder on top and add tomatoes, cinnamon, lemon juice, herbs and 500ml (2 cups) of stock or water. Bring to the boil. Put lid on and pop it on the bottom shelf of the oven. Let it gently cook for an hour or so, allowing the lamb to release some juices and fat. Take saucepan out of the oven to check and add the rest of the stock or water, pop it back in and leave it for another 6 hours or so.

2 red chillies (optional), coarsely chopped

Half an hour before you’re planning to eat, take pan out, and add risoni or orzo and mix well. Return pan to the oven for another 25 minutes or until the pasta is cooked.

Grilled haloumi, lemon wedges, crusty bread and a green salad, to serve

Serve with grilled haloumi dressed with a squeeze of lemon juice, fresh crusty bread and a crisp green salad.

500g dried risoni or orzo pasta

Sage butter sauce 125g butter 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 handful sage leaves, coarsely chopped 1 handful rosemary leaves, coarsely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed To make the dough, mix flour, eggs and a large pinch of salt together in a bowl, then knead for 10 minutes until dough springs back easily. Add extra flour or water as needed. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Blanch silverbeet in a large saucepan of boiling salted water with a splash of olive oil and 1 garlic clove for 2-3 minutes or until soft. Drain well, then chop very finely – you should have about 250g. Combine with half the ricotta and a pinch of nutmeg. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Add mince and crushed garlic, season with salt and pepper, and fry, stirring occasionally, for 10-12 minutes until browned. Cool, then combine with remaining ricotta and a pinch of nutmeg. Cut off a quarter of the dough, dust it with flour and roll out on a lightly floured surface to 3mm thick. Alternatively, use a pasta roller, starting on the widest setting and reducing settings notch by notch until 3mm thick (dust with flour as you go). Place small dollops of filling in a line along the sheet, 5cm apart and slightly off-centre. Brush edges with a wet finger, then fold pasta over, pushing out any air. Cut into squares, then seal with your fingers. Place on a floured surface and repeat with remaining dough and fillings. For the sauce, combine butter and oil in a frying pan over low–medium heat. Add herbs and garlic, season, and cook, swirling occasionally, for 5 minutes or until herbs are just starting to crisp. Meanwhile, cook ravioli in batches in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 minutes or until al dente. Toss in sage butter sauce and serve topped with parmesan and olive oil.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. But what about when life gives you smoke-tainted grapes? Well, according to Four Winds Vineyard, you make gin! The team at Murrumbatemanbased Four Winds were among those having to do away with the year’s crop due to smoketaint from the summer bushfi res. Not wanting to leave tonnes of precious grapes “for the birds”, owner and CEO Sarah Collingwood said she looked into what else they could be used for. She contacted the team at the Canberra Distillery, and the Four Winds Vineyard handmade gin was born. The fi rst batch is now ready to purchase, with floral, citrus, apple and juniper flavours that pair perfectly with tonic.

The Four Winds Vineyard handmade gin is available for $85 (700ml) at the cellar door, as well as Prohibition Bottle Shop, Kingston; Plonk, Fyshwick and Belconnen; Statesman Hotel, Curtin; Friendly Grocer, Chifley and Spence; and Canberra Wine and Spirit Merchants, City.

When She Was Good by Michael Robotham

Golden Daze by Sean Doherty

Hachette, $32.99

Hachette, $45

Jeff Popple reviews five great Australian books for Dad this Father’s Day. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Those dads who like gritty crime novels will enjoy Sydney author Michael Robotham’s When She Was Good. Forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven is still trying to find out the truth about Evie Cormac’s past. Six years ago, 12-yearold Evie was found hiding in a secret room in a house in which a horrific murder had occurred. Evie claims to remember nothing, but Haven is determined to uncover what really happened. He thinks that the truth will set Evie free, whereas she knows that looking for the truth will get them killed. A gripping read that holds attention all the way to the bloody conclusion and the final twist.

This is a marvellous book for dads who are into surfing and nostalgia. Doherty provides an entertaining history of Australian surfing by examining the most significant year in the careers of our top local surfers. From Isabel Letham’s introduction to surfing in 1915 to Mark Warren winning the Australian title in 1976 to Pam Burridge breaking into competitive surfing in 1979 to Mitch Fanning’s famous encounter with a shark in 2015, this book captures the highs and lows of Australian surfing. Complemented by a marvellous set of photos, this is a must for any dad who once picked up a board.

Friday on My Mind by Jeff Apter

Either Side of Midnight by Benjamin Stevenson

The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku

Allen & Unwin, $29.99

Michael Joseph, $32.99

Macmillan, $32.99

Also offering plenty of nostalgia and great stories is Jeff Apter’s biography of musical legend George Young. From the wild, fun days of the trailblazing Easybeats to George’s successful collaborations with a virtual ‘who’s who’ of Australian rock music, including Rose Tattoo, AC/DC and John Paul Young, Apter skilfully chronicles the life and work of one of the great figures in Australian musical history. He also provides interesting insights into George’s fruitful three-decade partnership with Harry Vanda and the unexpected success of their Flash and the Pan collaboration. This is a great book for all Australian music buffs.

Benjamin Stevenson’s Greenlight was one of my favourite Australian crime novels of 2018 and his new novel, Either Side of Midnight, is almost as good. Disgraced true crime documentary maker Jack Quick is in the final days of a prison sentence, when he is approached by Harry Midford to prove that his celebrity, TV presenter, brother Sam was murdered. The only problem is that Sam was witnessed by a million viewers pulling out a gun and killing himself. Desperate for the money, Jack agrees to investigate and soon finds a mystery more complex than he first assumed. A highly entertaining read.

Hundred-yearold Eddie Jaku has a simple blueprint for a happy life: smile every day, find joy and beauty and be a friend to the world. What is astonishing about Eddie’s mantra is that for seven years he was held in a German concentration camp witnessing firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust as his family and friends were killed. For 30 years he was unable to talk about his experiences, but now he travels Australia speaking on behalf of the dead and stressing the importance of forgiveness. This simple, moving account of a remarkable life offers plenty to think about and reflect on this Father’s Day. Highly recommended.

Bill & Ted Face the Music Now showing Tenet (M)

The stakes are higher than ever for the time-travelling exploits of William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore “Ted” Logan (Keanu Reeves). The now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure, helped by their daughters (Samara Weaving and Brigette LundyPaine), a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends. Don’t miss the totally excellent Bill & Ted Face the Music (PG) in cinemas 10 September.

In Kiev, ‘the Protagonist’ (John David Washington) joins a CIA operation to foil a siege at an opera house. After being captured, the Protagonist is promptly recruited into a secret organisation, and is told that the word ‘tenet’ will “open many doors” for him on his new mission to save the world. Ten years ago, director Christopher Nolan’s Inception tapped into the zeitgeist of dreaming within dreams. With a cast dressed to kill, the Leonardo DiCaprio-led cipher took audiences through the exposition-heavy dreamscape to accomplish a reverse-heist while reconciling his grief, all to get back home to his children. Tenet has all the faults of Inception with very little of its positives. While Washington brings the swagger, there is so little to his character that he is referred to

as ‘the Protagonist’. Like Inception, characters expel exposition against hastily clipped scenes at such a rate that the 2+ hour runtime seems short. Characterisations are reduced to thin genre tropes in favour of delivering reams of information to the audience to sift through to experience any intended payoffs. While cinematic, this spy movie does not correlate its time-twisting gimmick to a meaningful theme. Nolan is known for not pandering to his audience, preferring it actively engages with the movie that it is watching. Unlike Nolan’s previous time-twisting events however, Tenet may just not be worth the trouble. Verdict: A sharp-looking, clinical puzzle that requires multiple viewings to solve … which is a big ask. Very disappointing. 2 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

Petal power I was talking to a client this week who, after her consultation, was off to visit the nursery to buy some plants. We were both in agreement about how enjoyable it is to spend time in nurseries, how peaceful, soothing and uplifting they can be. Most keen gardeners would feel the same way about time spent in the garden. We know, thanks to the Japanese pastime of ‘park bathing’, the measurable benefits on stress and mood (based on quality research evidence) of being in nature. We also know, thanks to thousands of years of mankind’s exploration of medicinal plants, that plants can heal; in fact, our modern pharmacopeia is built on the foundations we learnt from plant medicine.

Given what we know about plants, it doesn’t require a huge leap of the imagination to consider that flowers, on their own, have healing properties. The flowering parts of plants are commonly used in herbal medicine. Chamomile, for example, is a well-known digestive and nervous system herb, and elderflowers are used to induce sweating and bring down a fever. However, we have Dr Edward Bach to thank for bringing ‘flower essence’ remedies into prominence in the 1930s. Bach was a Harley Street specialist in London who was determined to treat his patients more holistically. If you have ever used Rescue Remedy, a remedy Bach created for treating the effects of shock or trauma, then you have used flower essences. Bach created 38 remedies which were primarily used to counteract negative emotional states and restore a person’s equilibrium. According to Bach, flower essences should be made simply by floating the heads of the flowers in pure water for three hours in direct sunlight, after which the healing properties of the flower are considered to transfer into the water, which is then mixed with equal parts brandy to act as a preservative. This simple method of making a flower

WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com

essence may be too big a leap of faith for many who prefer that their treatments come with some doubleblind placebo-controlled research to back them up. However, whilst clinical trials have found flower essences are safe, there is little in the way of clinical trials that prove their efficacy. Nevertheless, if you consider the power of nature to heal then it is logical that flower essences, perhaps one of the subtlest forms of natural medicine, have a role to play. If you’re keen to further explore flower essences, then you might want to check out the original Bach Flower Remedies or have a look at Australian Bush Flower Essences created by Australian, Ian White. However, my personal favorites are Lotuswei essences created by self-confessed ‘flower freak’ and gifted teacher, Katie Hess. in the garden

In flower at STEP National Arboretum

Bulbine bulbosa or Bulbine Lily, has edible underground corms used traditionally by Indigenous Australians.

This winter is proving to be decidedly mild, perfect for getting outside and enjoying what Canberra has to offer. Forest 20 at the National Arboretum, which includes STEP (Southern Tablelands Ecosystems Park) and the bush food garden, is one such place to visit. This unique, mixed planting forest is coming into its own as it becomes more established and is a lovely example of what can be achieved using climateappropriate Australian native plants. Here are three plants currently in flower there: 1. Hardenbergia violacea, commonly known as Coral Pea and Native Sarsaparilla amongst others, is a widely cultivated climber or scrambling sub-shrub, and for good reason! This fast-growing perennial from the pea family has mid- to deep-green leaves reminiscent of those found on many Eucalyptus species. It is adorned in glorious violet flowers during late winter and early spring, a timely reminder that

a change of season is on its way. Hardenbergia violacea grows in sunny to semi-shaded aspects and in a range of soil types from sandy loams to well-drained clays. Once established, they can tolerate periods of hot and dry weather. This versatile plant can be used as a groundcover, small shrub or as a non-invasive climber for smaller areas. Hardenbergia violacea leaves are traditionally used to make a tea to relieve toothaches, sore throats and maintain healthy insides. Dye is sourced from the flowers and used in basket weaving. The flowers are also a hit with beneficial insects. 2. Eryngium ovinum, known as Blue Devil, is a hardy perennial herb suited to sunny positions and a range of soil types. Foliage dies down in autumn before re-appearing in late winter. Traditionally, the striking and long-lasting blue flowers appear in summer, but apparently spot flowering is also possible during the cooler months. Culturally, Eryngium ovinum deserves a place in every rockery and mixed-perennial bed. When picked, the flowers can be used fresh or in dried flower arrangements. It is easily propagated by seed sown into

WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com

punnets of seed raising mix during late spring/early summer. 3. Bulbine bulbosa, known as Bulbine Lily and Native Leek, amongst others, is a hardy perennial herb with fragrant bright yellow flowers appearing in clusters during spring through to autumn, and with spot flowers at other times. Growing from corms, not bulbs, B. bulbosa has a wide distribution from tropical to cool temperate regions. It grows in sunny to partly-shaded aspects and tolerates a range of soils, including those with periods of water inundation. The foliage will die back over prolonged periods of hot and dry weather. Traditionally, the corms from established clumps are used as a tasty food source. They are usually roasted. B. bulbosa is a worthy addition to the garden, lending itself especially well to masse displays, cottage gardens and pot culture. Propagation is by seed or division after flowering. Store freshly harvested seed for several months before sowing.

Eryngium ovinum or Blue Devil has striking blue flowers, popular in dried flower arrangements.

Hardenbergia violacea or Native sarsaparilla grows beautifully as a groundcover, sub-shrub or small climber.

Amara curve coffee table $2,020 Globewest

Middle of nowhere pebble mirror $372 Design Stuff A custom curved kitchen from Caesarstone.

Trend alert: Embrace the curves Curves are in. Curves create the perception of space and invoke a feeling of comfort and intimacy. Curves as a design element Expert renovators Kyal and Kara Demmrich focused on soft round curves to achieve a sense of relaxed drama and personality in their latest renovation – a threebedroom “surf shack” home. Kyal said they used curves as a design element throughout.

“A curved feature wall leads from the entrance of the bedroom around to the walk-in robe and really softens the look of the space and makes it feel luxurious,” he said. “The curved features continue with arched doorways, rounded walls and a showstopper curved staircase taking centre stage of the living room.”

Curved features Caesarstone kitchens are using curves in 2020 to bring elegance to their designs, softening edges and injecting a twist of interest to modern interiors. Kitchen designer Darren Farquhar said curves are contemporary and he loves the soft flowing minimalistic look they add to a space. “Our tip is to curve the cabinetry with the benchtop to achieve a beautiful streamlined look for the island”.

Incorporate subtle curves Injecting curved furniture can be an inexpensive way to incorporate this hot trend. Rounded tables are a great meeting point for family conversations. Curved rugs, mirrors and lamps are also show-stopping features.

A slice of the Hamptons Pearce 94 Macfarland Crescent Pack your bags and take a trip to the Hamptons! This five-bedroom home in Pearce has been designed for family life – but you’ll feel like you’re on holidays! “This is a beautiful Hamptonsstyle home with classic architecture a little different from modern builds and homes in the surrounding area,” says Anthony Weston, sales consultant and selling agent from Blackshaw Woden. “The home itself is of generous proportions with quality inclusions and comforts throughout.” 36

canberraweekly.com.au

The hub of the home is the bright kitchen, with its stone benches, large island that doubles as a breakfast bar, and a butler’s pantry. Open plan living allows for a seamless transition to the family and dining room and the outdoor entertaining space. The formal lounge at the front of home provides flexibility for living and entertaining options. “The home is ideally suited to a family, with large spaces to live, relax and entertain,” Weston says. The main bedroom is the perfect

parents’ retreat, with a walk-in robe and ensuite with bath, while the remaining upstairs bedrooms boast built-in robes, serviced by the light and bright main bathroom and separate toilet. The fifth bedroom or rumpus room comes with a walk-in robe, and sits downstairs adjoining the enormous garage, which has internal access and drive-through access to the backyard. The immaculate backyard is secure, with mature plantings and water tank, as well as the tiled, undercover alfresco area with outdoor kitchen, TV and blinds. “The home has generated amazing interest and we have received many comments about the style, quality and presentation of the home,” Weston says.

“We have genuine interest and are excited to learn who the new owners of this beautiful home will be! “Pearce, and Woden generally, is desired due to its central location, well serviced by employment and schooling options.”

property news

Weekly market wrap Canberra market continues to ‘punch above its weight’ One of the best parts of Canberra’s property market is the relatively consistent growth in values. This minimises a lot of the risks associated with other property markets, allowing purchasers to enter the market when they can afford to rather than trying to guess timing of boom and bust cycles. Since 2005, Allhomes ACT Property Report shows the median price of houses has increased every year except in 2012. Median prices of units have gone up in 13 years, only declining in 2006, 2015 and 2018. To put this in perspective, in 2015 when median unit values decreased most, they fell by $5,100 or 1.21%. CoreLogic’s head of Australian research, Eliza Owen, recently wrote “in the ACT, there is a high level of divergence between capital growth in houses and units”. “House values across the ACT were at a record high in July 2020, having increased 8.5% over the year. The median house value was $721,912 at July 2020. Unit values were 3.6% below the record high, where the value of the unit market peaked in May 2010. “However, units have also followed the recent house market upswing, sitting 2.7% higher over the year. The median unit value across Canberra was $445,135.” The divergence can be explained by there being more opportunities to horizontally subdivide airspace than there are to create new suburbs. Town centres across Canberra have had exponential growth in their resident populations. Gungahlin, Belconnen, Dickson, Phillip and Greenway have changed significantly during the last decade.

Nationally, Canberra’s property market continues to punch well above its weight. Reporting auction results from capital cities nationally, CoreLogic found “there were 632 Sydney homes taken to auction this week, returning a preliminary auction clearance rate of 71.9%. This was an improvement on last week’s preliminary figure of 67.8% which later revised down to 61.9% at final collection. Volumes were a higher 668 last week across the city, however. One year ago, a lower 503 Sydney homes were taken to auction returning a higher success rate (78.1%)”. “Canberra continues to be the standout performer with 87.8% of auctions successful this week at preliminary collection. The city does only account for a small portion of overall auctions, however.”

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

Weeks of exceptionally strong auction clearance rates indicate dynamic conditions for both buyers and sellers of properties in Canberra.

Weekly Facebook Live series Each Saturday at 9am, I host a Facebook Live for Canberra Weekly to answer your property questions. This week’s topic is Property Management with Courtney Baker, head of property management at Blackshaw Real Estate. You can email questions to hello@canberrapropertypodcast.com.au with ‘Facebook Live’ in the subject line, and tune in via the Canberra Weekly Facebook page.

Googong calls to young buyers More and more young buyers are looking across the border to Googong to purchase their first home, according to general manager of Thrive Homes, Janelle Goulding. “The national and NSW building incentives have helped, but we’ve really seen a growing trend among first home buyers looking at Googong since earlier in the year,” she said. “The majority are coming to us after giving up the search for an affordable existing property closer to Canberra.” She said many buyers are realising

“how much more they can get for their money” across the border. Young Queanbeyan locals, Anthony Tonkovic and Anna-Lee Kate, decided to build their new home in Googong with Thrive Homes, as opposed to purchasing and renovating an older home in Queanbeyan or the ACT. “We’ve bought a block that isn’t going to be ready for building until early 2021, which means we’re not eligible for the national HomeBuilder grant. Even so, we’re getting a better outcome by buying land and building here, than buying an existing house in the ACT,” they said.

A piece of paradise Surfside NSW 76 Myamba Parade 76 Myamba Parade in Surfside is the dream Australian beach pad, just metres to the shore, with unobstructed ocean views. “There are so very few homes that have lawn to sand as a backyard on the coast,” says My Agent Christine Ewin managing director, Christine Ewin. “This is the epitome of beach front. The king of real estate.” Ewin says this home is the last original cottage on the street and is one of just a handful that has “uninterrupted views and lawn to the dunes”.

“Turn right from the backyard you can follow the beach around the corner and walk over the Batemans Bay Bridge into the CBD within 20 minutes,” she says. “Turn left and take the track along the scenic Cullendulla boardwalk, enjoy quiet bays and swimming areas.” She says at night, “the town creates a backdrop of lights reflecting in the water”. “On New Year’s Eve, you can watch the fireworks at Corrigans Cove from the back deck.” With four bedrooms – one

separate from the main house, two bathrooms and no stairs, this home is perfect for a range of buyers, from investors to holidaymakers to those retiring for a sea change. Ewin says the new owner could use the home themselves and make the home available for short-term rentals for added income. “Retirement in the future to the coast provides the opportunity to employ an architect, renovate,

go two-storey or just remove the house and start from scratch,” she says.

celebrity birthday KEANU REEVES 2 September 1964 The year ahead sees an increase of responsibility for Keanu where his home and family are concerned. There will be many occasions when he will be helping loved ones to achieve their goals. Keanu will need to take extra care where his health is concerned in the coming months. His throat, nose and upper part of the body may be a concern. There will certainly be recognition for his past efforts in his career.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Details are not your thing, but something is unexpectedly likely to get in your way, forcing you to slow down and catch up with yourself. You will find new excitement and challenge in taking the time to ensure what you have created is useful and of service to others.

Helping someone special with their goals will bring you joy this week. Meanwhile, keeping your feet on the ground will help you to cope when it comes to dealing with a challenging relationship. The planets require open-mindedness and flexibility to navigate a time of uncertainty.

In recent weeks, you may have opened your heart and shared your innermost feelings with someone special or those who are closest to you, encouraging deeper connections. At the very least, your greater understanding of the value of your relationships will bring you more joy.

Relationships with your workmates need some consideration this week. You can work hard but, when you come all wrapped up in your ambitions, there aren’t many people who can keep up with you. No doubt this will make you smile because you love being top dog.

Some thought-provoking communication either on the work front or in the domestic sphere will leave you with a new understanding this week. Playful romantic vibes or adventures will recharge your life if you allow yourself to be spontaneous and remain open to new possibilities.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

Your search for individuality requires you to retreat somewhat as you contemplate who you really are; only then can you start to figure out what you want from others. The opportunity to help someone or make a difference in a personal situation will prove to be emotionally rewarding.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

There will be joy in a loved one’s good fortune and a connection from the past will revive. Also, you’ll receive an invitation that’s been a long time coming. Pouring energy into a special plan with your family or someone close to you will bring it to fruition.

You’re not very good at reaching out to others for help as you usually prefer to do things your way. However, it would be a good idea to do so at this time as, one way or another, you are certainly going to gain by doing so.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY New horizons will beckon in coming weeks. It’s a favourable time to explore fun, different places and meet knowledgeable associates who have helpful ideas and advice. You may be subject to a radical change in your environment or unexpected outbursts from other people.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE In recent months, your significant relationships may have taken you into uncharted territory. If you allow yourself to experience these new emotional horizons with an open heart, then by early September, you will have discovered a deeper, more rewarding and meaningful connection with loved ones.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

Your time and energy will be spent trying to pull yourself up the ladder of success by your bootstraps. However, you must avoid treading on too many toes on the way up because you could very well meet them on the way down – an old adage, but true.

• Large kitchens with pantry and lots of bench space • Plentiful storage so you can bring your memories with you

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Ego conflicts and arguments are likely to lead to unexpected consequences, especially if you take on superiors. The best way to handle this is to be proactive about positive change. If tension is harming a relationship, stay flexible and ready for change; otherwise, a separation could result.

One-of-a-kind cufflinks

The Refoundry mission is to make great products that reduce plastic waste – like these cufflinks, handcrafted from two different coloured recycled bottle lids found around Canberra. Every piece we make is one of a kind and will never be “perfect”. That’s because of the way that plastic naturally dries unevenly and often with air bubbles too. We think it gives these pieces “character”. With your purchase, Refoundry will donate a percentage of the revenue to not-for-profits that are organising clean-up efforts around Australia and beyond - especially those that are trying to keep plastic out of our waterways to protect wildlife. Visit refoundry.com.au to see what’s in store.

Enter to WIN One lucky CW reader will win a pair of handmade Refoundry cuffl inks. To enter, visit canberraweekly.com.au and click on the ‘Entertainment’ tab to ‘Competitions’, find this competition and follow the entry instructions. Entries close 9am Friday 4 September 2020 and winners drawn same day. One entry per person. Entrants must be aged 18+.
