This week... From the editor With the ACT election fast approaching, corflutes have sprung up across the suburbs like so many colourful spring bulbs and flowers for Floriade: Reimagined (see cover story, page 20), The timing is somewhat unfortunate – or advantageous if you’re a candidate or party apparatchik – as the Floriade festival (12 September-11 October) is completely engulfed by the election campaign period that ends on polling day, 17 October. While we might agree they’re a [temporary] eyesore, corflutes have become almost synonymous with a healthy Aussie democracy; just one more way for candidates to get their name in front of voters. While it seems a small price to pay for a vigorous democracy, on the other hand I’m told corflutes aren’t environmentally sustainable or readily recyclable (even if some are reused to build cubby houses, insulate windows or temporarily patch stormdamaged roofs). So, if their use were to be banned for future elections by all parties and candidates, to ensure a level playing field, I wouldn’t necessarily shed a tear. Would you? Meanwhile, I hope we can enjoy Floriade’s many community plantings free of ‘corflutery’. Reasons to be grateful this past week include Father’s Day celebrations, talking with my 83-year-old Dad in Cairns, dinner with friends, a lakeside walk and gardening. Take care,

news Liberals promise more school buses and road safety measures The Canberra Liberals have promised to spend $12.5 million on school road safety measures and to re-establish dedicated school bus services should they win October’s election. Upgrading safety infrastructure at school dropoff and pick-up areas, installing flashing lights on school zone road signage, and providing dedicated crossing supervisors at “every school that needs one” are a few of the measures announced. Liberals spokesperson for education, Elizabeth Lee MLA, said $7.5 million will go toward school zone flashing lights and road markings, with $5 million going toward pick-up and drop-off zone safety infrastructure. “Evidence has proven that flashing lights at school zones act as a friendly reminder to motorists that they are entering a school zone,” she said. “Canberra drivers want to do the right thing, but they don’t always know when they’re entering a school zone.” Labor spokesperson for transport, Chris Steel MLA, said a study commissioned by Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) on the use of flashing lights at school zones said the prompts wouldn’t be effective in the ACT. “Canberra schools are generally located away

from arterial roads which differs from other jurisdictions such as NSW and Queensland. “ACT school zones also operate all day from 8am to 4pm which means the rules are simpler and motorists generally do not require prompts such as flashing lights,” he said. Ms Lee said the pick-up and drop-off zone infrastructure would specifically relate to improving visibility due to anecdotal evidence parents encounter “a lot of blind spots” around schools. Mr Steel said the Canberra Liberals announcement ignores the work the ACT Government has undertaken to improve safety around schools. “The ACT Labor Government introduced the ‘Active Streets for Schools’ program and the School Crossing Supervisors Program as effective means to improve children’s safety.” Canberra Liberals spokesperson for transport, Candice Burch MLA, also promised to reinstate dedicated school buses “for schools that need them” in collaboration with school communities. Without costings for the dedicated school bus services policy “as yet”, Ms Burch said routes would be reinstated for schools where demand

for such services exist. She said currently there are “around 50 primary schools” across Canberra without any dedicated school buses. In response, Mr Steel said pre-COVID 19 patronage showed school student numbers were unchanged as a result of the network change and that reverting to dedicated school services would require a 25% cut in “all existing regular peak services”. “The current network uses the whole Transport Canberra fleet through the peak, including school drop-off and pick-up times. “The Canberra Liberals need to be honest with the community about these cuts to the bus network, or explain how else they will deliver these services,” he said. - Denholm Samaras

ACT minor party candidates make their case There were strong “Don Chipp vibes” at Woden’s Southern Cross Club last week (3 September) when candidates from the ACT’s minor parties presented their policy priorities for the upcoming ACT election and declared their intention to hold the government of the day accountable. The Minor Party Showcase was hosted by former member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, Michael Moore, who told the physicallydistanced crowd of fewer than 100 people that a strong crossbench made for a strong democracy. The dominant themes of the forum were land development, community consultation, and desires for a more robust democracy. Canberra Progressives candidate, Robert Knight, told the crowd his party was created five years ago for people who found “no natural home” in mainstream politics. Fellow Progressives candidate, Peta Swarbrick, said she didn’t feel represented by the three men in leadership. “They were produced by the party machine; they walk and talk to the party lines.” In a very 2020 moment, a Sustainability Australia candidate was unable to attend because they were self-isolating but sent an apology and a claim that they were the “sensible centre”. 10

canberraweekly.com.au

David Pollard Independent wanted to remain … independent. “An independent crossbench makes all sides better,” he said. “People listen to good ideas, challenge bad ideas and provide scrutiny.” The Australian Climate Change Justice Party representative, Petar Johnson, said despite Canberra’s position as one of the most prosperous places in the world, there was waste in the $6 billion budget. “We are not facing the challenges of this century,” Mr Johnson said. “Climate change is here and it’s real and will change our way of life.” Former Liberal Party stalwart, Bill Stefaniak, and Angela Lount were present to represent the Belco Party. Mr Stefaniak used the Belconnen pool as an example of what independents could achieve and decried Don Chipp’s famous “keep the bastards honest” promise as he called for government accountability. Ms Lount said despite having been a Labor voter her entire life, she joined the Belco Party because she felt Labor was no longer listening. The nation’s emerging minor party powerhouse, the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers

Party, was represented by Gordan Yeatman, who declared he’d had enough of government overreach. “There is a disconnection between government and the people, and zero consultation.” Former public servant and legislative drafter Alvin Hopper represented the Community Action Party and said “sweeping changes” to the electoral system were necessary, but he wanted to be realistic. “The coalition has betrayed the electorate,” Mr Hopper said. “They do deals behind closed doors with little community consultation.” Independent candidate and former president of the Woden Valley Community Council, Fiona Carrick, said she was driven by her passion for retaining shared public spaces. “We’ve (Woden) lost the basketball courts, tennis courts and bowling greens, and now the ice skating has gone to Tuggeranong. We don’t have anywhere to go to meet as a community.” The candidates reached consensus on preferences and agreed to work together to create “a better Canberra”. - Cassandra Power

news ACT Indigenous businesses supported in pandemic A streamlined ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Support Program has commenced, giving local businesses and their employees help to adapt and flourish through the trying times of the pandemic. Run by Indigenous majority owned and managed Canberra business, Yerra, managing director Dion Devow has championed the cause for several years. Mr Devow told Canberra Weekly he was inspired to create the program after winning the 2014 ACT NAIDOC Business Of The Year Award with Darkies Design. “Because my journey was so lonely, I didn’t have many people I could talk to … there was no coordinated supports or networks or get-togethers or workshops,” he said. The fact Mr Devow’s award was sponsored by the ACT Government

inspired him to reach out to see if they would aid him in establishing a local Indigenous business support program. Several discussions then led to the first Canberra Business Yarning Circle, an ongoing event which serves as a community-building exercise. “I talked to the Aboriginal Torres Strait entrepreneur community and asked what they wanted, and it was mostly basic business advice,” he said. The event, in turn, served as a feedback mechanism that assisted Mr Devow to develop and establish the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Support Program in 2015. “When we get together and yarn, I ask the community what is it that you need and then I work backwards form there.” Five years on, that program

is still running and has reached over 190 businesses – but is now implemented differently due to COVID-19 restrictions. “Over the coming months we will be sharing education, resources, programs, training packages and other relevant information to help businesses survive and recover from COVID-19,” Mr Devow said. “It’s more than just about helping people start a business; more of a wholistic approach to inform people of how we can still be effective, trade and drive in these unprecedented, uncertain times.” A proud community leader, Mr Devow said he feels “honoured” to see local Indigenous business owners achieve their dreams and aspirations in part because of the assistance these programs offer. “A beautiful artist has gone from doing children’s face paintings to

WorkSafe ACT has shut down more worksites in Watson after routine compliance inspections were conducted last week. One company was ordered to stop work, with 13 of their construction sites shut down across various locations in Canberra. WorkSafe has refused to name the company, however, said it relates only to single dwelling residences (not developments). WorkSafe issued a range of other notices at various worksites in Watson, including six prohibition notices, closing down five sites owned by four different companies, more than 30 improvement notices to 10 different companies, and one

infringement notice. The compliance checks form part of WorkSafe ACT’s Operation Safe Prospect campaign. Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius said there was an “appalling” amount of safety concerns, which could have resulted in fatalities or injuries. The latest shutdowns come as WorkSafe continues to crack down on unsafe construction practices. The independent regulator shut down 11 sites belonging to one company in August, and earlier last week issued a range of notices in North Canberra. Renters granted relief period Additional support will be provided for renters affected by COVID-19, with the ACT AttorneyGeneral Gordon Ramsay signing a declaration on 4 September to allow for a transitional period once the moratorium on evictions ends on 22 October. The transitional period, to run until 31 January 2021, will provide impacted renters with a longer timeframe to pay their rental debts before they could face eviction for arrears accrued before or during the moratorium. An ACT Government spokesperson said this would provide tenants with more time to recover financially and allow them to enter into a payment plan with

their landlords. The measure will only apply to tenants who pay their rent after 23 October “as and when it falls due”. The Real Estate Institute of the ACT has expressed concern about tenants who are unable to meet payments from 23 October, and CEO Michelle Tynan said many landlords cannot afford to continue reduced or deferred rent indefinitely. The declaration comes after a consortium of five organisations, including Better Renting, Tenants’ Union ACT and ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS), wrote to Mr Ramsay calling for an extension to the six-month moratorium on evictions.

Molonglo school named The newest school in the ACT has been named after Dr Evelyn Scott, an advocate for social justice for Indigenous people across Australia. The school, which will be open to students from preschool to year six in 2021, will be called Evelyn Scott School – the name was selected from a list of Aboriginal leaders known

for reform and activism. The community voted for the name, as well as the school uniform design, which will be blue with a design of an Australian Reed Warbler bird. The high school at Evelyn Scott School will be open for students in years seven to 10 from 2023.

Canberra-wide Tulip Trail leads Floriade: Reimagined This year, the one million bulbs and annuals that would typically beautify Commonwealth Park have been rearranged over 130 sites to create a Tulip Trail through Canberra’s suburbs and city for Floriade: Reimagined. Floriade: Reimagined operations manager, Sarah Boyd, told Canberra Weekly that once they knew earlier in the year that the regular Commonwealth Park event wouldn’t be feasible, the idea of taking it out to the community was a no-brainer. “We thought if we couldn’t bring people together into one place, we’d do the opposite of that and take it out across Canberra so everybody, regardless of the restrictions, would be able to access the flowers come spring time,” she said. With a mix of floral displays created by the Floriade horticulture team and more than 90 Canberra community plantings, Ms Boyd said the sites were strategically chosen. “Places like hospitals, local shops, medical centres, café precincts … We just want people to come out, explore Canberra and visit these places but also just enjoy it as they go out and do what they’re doing.” Around 300,000 of the million bulbs and annuals were distributed to community groups and organisations, with not-forprofits, sporting clubs, schools and early learning centres as well as residents’ groups across Canberra all playing their part. “It wasn’t something we went out looking for, but it was reflected in the applications we received … It’s brought people together and that’s been a great thing to watch,” Ms Boyd said. Alongside the Tulip Trail, Floriade: Reimagined will also include a face-to-face and digital program to accompany the floral displays.

A six-episode podcast series, online video content including workshops and talks, as well as art and craft and fitness classes, and a Canberra-wide gnome hunt will all take place. Also, this year NightFest has been transformed into NightFeast. On Friday 2 October for one night only, Canberrans will enjoy a feast with a mouth-watering difference as restaurants and eateries across the capital dish up bespoke, spring-inspired eats. As to whether any of the community-driven elements would continue once Floriade is able to return to Commonwealth Park, Ms Boyd said it’s possible depending on the feedback they receive for this year’s iteration. “This year is an experiment we can learn from and then make some decisions about how we run the event moving forward,” she said. Floriade: Reimagined will run from 12 September to 11 October, while NightFest will return on Friday 2 October; floriadeaustralia.com - Denholm Samaras

news ACT Election 2020: The leaders speak Ahead of the ACT election on Saturday 17 October, Canberra Weekly invited the leaders of the two major parties – ACT Labor’s Andrew Barr and Canberra Liberals’ Alistair Coe – to outline their plans for the Territory. Op-ed by Andrew Barr, ACT Labor Leader The ACT Government has outlined a four-year, $4.9 billion jobs and economic recovery plan to assist in Canberra’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the greatest economic and public health challenge that the Territory has ever faced. The decisions we are all taking right now, in our personal lives and our professional lives, are significant. These decisions have, through the initial stages of the pandemic, resulted in a low infection rate in the Territory. Our public health response has, and always will, take precedence in how the ACT Government continues to support the Canberra community.

But right now, we have to display resilience and agility in how the ACT Government works with the non-government sectors to restore growth and protect local jobs. We believe that the best way to help households through this period is to do what we can to keep people employed. Having a job means more than paying the mortgage or rent, and it means more than being able to put food on the table. It provides meaning, structure, connection and opportunity in people’s lives. It also means that they can contribute to our community, and keep other people employed too. I know a big part of my job is to help protect Canberra jobs.

In delivering this plan, the Government aims to grow Canberra’s employment base to more than 250,000 jobs by 2025. Our plan features an ambitious infrastructure investment program, that funds projects varied in size, to protect and create jobs now and into the future. We will build the infrastructure a growing city needs, including an expanded Canberra Hospital, new and expanded schools in growing suburbs, more investment in new public housing and a state-of-the-art CIT facility in Woden. We will invest in growing emerging industries and continue to support innovation by creating and shaping future markets. This

investment will include targeted skills development and partnering with our world-leading tertiary sector to train the workforce of the future. Our Plan outlines how the ACT Government will increase employment. Our city relies on the public services the Government provides, and now more than ever we need to grow our capacity. Maintaining confidence in non-government sectors is also critical to Canberra’s future. This Plan outlines how the Government intends to support and enable employment growth in areas such as tertiary education, renewable energy, innovation, arts and defence industries. The pandemic isn’t over, and the economic impacts will be felt for generations. However, in these uncertain times, ACT Government is delivering the right plan to support Canberra’s economic recovery and protect local jobs.

Op-ed by Alistair Coe, Canberra Liberals Leader Your choice will decide Canberra’s future. In less than six weeks, Canberrans will make a choice that will determine the future of our city. That’s why your choice could not be more important. After years of increasing taxes and declining services, we need a fresh vision to take Canberra forward with lower taxes and better services. That’s why I am so passionate about making Canberra the best place to live, work and raise a family so everyone can get ahead. Canberrans pay world class taxes; they should receive world class services. Unfortunately, on so many fronts, Canberra is falling behind. Children are waiting four years to see a health specialist, we have the lowest maths and literacy outcomes in our schools, rates and rents are soaring, we have rapidly rising levels of homelessness and our tree canopy

has been reduced. What motivates me and what motivates my team is helping everyone get ahead by making Canberra more affordable for everyone and delivering better services that families rely on. That’s why we have a positive vision for lower taxes and better services. It’s that vision and a fundamental belief that every Canberran matters and should be able to get ahead that drives the Canberra Liberals. That’s why our policies are focused on reducing pressures on Canberrans and doing what we can to help them get ahead. Because we think cost-of-living pressures should be reduced, we’ve committed to freeze rates for four years to reduce cost-of-living pressures. Because we want to make sure the Bush Capital lives up to its name, we’re committed to plant and care for 1 million trees over the next decade.

Because we want Canberra to be the most liveable city in the world, we’re committed to protect Green Space right across the city, including places like West Basin and the Curtin Horse Paddocks. Because we want to make sure our schools are the best and safest learning environments, we’re committed to bolstering school maintenance so that kids in our schools have the infrastructure they deserve, regardless of whether it’s an old or a new building. Because we want parents to have peace of mind, we’re committed to bringing back dedicated school buses and making drop-off and pick-up

zones safer with flashing lights. And because we want to ensure every Canberran has the opportunities to work and live in Canberra, we will make Canberra the best place to do business to turbocharge our economy through the COVID-19 recovery. It’s these real and practical measures that will future-proof our City, reduce pressures on families and local business and help more Canberrans get ahead. Over the coming weeks as we release our full suite of policies, we will prove that only a Canberra Liberals Government will deliver lower taxes and better services so everyone can get ahead.

Raiders made a string of uncharacteristic errors in the second half. The team’s biggest concern seemed to be game-changer Josh Papalii coming off with a shoulder injury. He has now been cleared and will be monitored this week. The Canberra side will face the Dragons at WIN Stadium, Wollongong this Saturday 12 September 3pm.

Brumbies’ second loss The Plus500 Brumbies had their second loss of the Super Rugby AU season in a physical contest against the Queensland Reds on Saturday night. The Queensland side won 28-7. Forward Pete Samu was the only player to get across the line for the Canberra side, who had already secured a home grand final at GIO Stadium Canberra. The Round 10 match was the final series game, with finals kicking off this week. The Brumbies will face the winner of this weekend’s Reds and Rebels contest in the grand final on Saturday 19 September 7.15pm at GIO Stadium Canberra. The club announced on Monday 7 September that all full-season ticket holders would have access to a free ticket to the grand final.

In other club news, local pathway product Mack Hansen has committed to the Brumbies for next season. The Daramalan College alumni has been part of the Brumbies squad since 2018, developing his game while playing locally for the Gungahlin Eagles in the John I Dent Cup and with the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship. Since 2019, the 22-year-old has worn his boyhood team colours six times on the Super Rugby stage, famously kicking a penalty goal to win against the Reds after the siren in round five this year.

Local footy clubs secure grants The Queanbeyan Junior Tigers and Tuggeranong Valley Australian Football Club have each been the successful recipients of a $4,000 grant through the St George Footy Grants program. The Queanbeyan side will use the grant for first aid equipment and training of volunteers. The newer Tuggeranong side will put its grant toward coaching and managing uniforms. The grants program has provided a total of $200,000 to individuals and clubs over four football codes.

GIVIT donation of the week: Slow cookers Many families and individuals who lost homes and livelihoods in the Black Summer Bushfires are still living in temporary accommodation as they undergo the daunting task of rebuilding their homes. An organisation that supports those affected by the bushfires in the Snowy Monaro region is in need of key essential items to help their clients get back on track. Having a slow cooker would bring ease to their lives by allowing them to meet the daily recovery commitments and come home to a hot meal already prepared for their families. Many survivors have lost everything including all kitchen essentials. Any pre-loved, good quality slow cookers which can be donated will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be collected by or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category ‘Slow Cookers’ to view requests located in your area. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Share your community event. Email news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘HYH’ in the subject field. Deadline is 10 days prior to Thursday edition date.

Rotary Seniors Concert cancelled The Rotary Club of Canberra has decided it must cancel the 2020 Rotary Seniors Concert due to COVID-19 issues with the age of the audience, massed singers, and the need for social distancing. With the support of COTA, Sing Australia, local musicians and many local aged care facilities, the Seniors Concert has been an annual feature of the Rotary Club of Canberra's support of the local community since 1985. It is hoped the Seniors Concert can be held in 2021.

PERFORM AUSTRALIA This school holidays, Perform Australia host a variety of programs for young aspiring actors across a range of age groups and interests. Two programs for primary school children aged 7-10 – the first of which is a three-day ‘choose your own adventure character acting workshop’ that will see children develop their own character around whom they will collectively build a play. The second is a two-day program called ‘Your favourite movie in six seconds flat acting workshop’, which will be largely improvisation based. For teenagers aged 13-17, Perform Australia will host an Actors Bootcamp; students will take part in masterclasses and be introduced to a range of industry-specific information on how to become professional actors. It will also feature a Zoom Q&A with Sydney talent agent Naomi Jenkins and a guest talk with prominent Canberra actor Lexi Sekuless. W: perform.edu.au/holiday-programs T: 1300 908 905

Sanguineti Media’s Spring Filmmaker Hero Workshop will give Canberra’s young filmmakers aged 9-17 the chance to produce a 2-4-minute short film over five days. Run from 29 September to 2 October by Dan Sanguineti’s award-winning Canberra-based film and video production company, the workshop gives kids an opportunity to tell their stories. “These are opportunities I didn’t get when I was younger, mostly because of technology … now it’s so much more accessible,” Dan said. “The focus this school holidays is to make films about heroes in our society, not superheroes, just everyday heroes.” Now in their fifth year, Dan said he’s inspired to run the workshops to nurture Canberra’s next generation of filmmakers. “In 10 years, these kids who are loving this process will ideally be a part of our industry graduating from places like UC and CIT,” he said. Upon completion, everyone’s short film will be live streamed for parents and then entered into the Canberra Short Film Festival. W: sanguinetimedia.com.au

Two ways with: Papaya toast Ramp up your springtime breakfast with some stunningly seasonal papaya. Food writer Libby Kimber brings you two papaya toast recipes – one sweet and one savoury – to kickstart your mornings for the warmer months. Recipes courtesy of Papaya Australia australianpapaya.com.au

Papaya French toast bake Prep: 10 mins, plus 30 mins resting time Cook: 40 mins Serves 6

300g brioche

1/4 cup Greek yoghurt or sour cream

1/2 medium papaya

1 tsp vanilla paste or extract

1/4 cup chopped pecans

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 tsp sea salt

4 large eggs

1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1 Tbsp butter

3/4 cup milk

Smear the butter evenly across the base and sides of a 3-litre baking dish. Cut bread into 1.5cm slices. Peel, de-seed and thinly slice the papaya. Toss pecans with 1 tablespoon of the brown sugar. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sour cream, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and remaining sugar. Stand a row of bread slices along one end of the buttered baking dish. Arrange papaya and remaining bread in overlapping layers, then top with blueberries. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread and fruit and press gently with the back of a large spoon to submerge. Let the baking dish stand at room temperature for 30 minutes while the bread absorbs the egg mixture. Preheat oven to 180°C. Top the bread and fruit with the sugared pecans and bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden and puffed in the centre. If the top is browning too quickly, tent with foil for the last half of baking. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Papaya, goat’s cheese and honey toast Prep: 2 mins Serves 1 1 piece sourdough bread, toasted 1/4 cup crumbled goat’s cheese 75g thinly sliced papaya 1/2 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp fresh mint, shredded Top toasted sourdough with goat cheese and papaya to taste. Drizzle over honey and sprinkle with mint to serve.

Chargrill’d Eatery Not everyone would open a new food venue in the midst of a pandemic, but that didn’t stop Chris Felemegas and brother Peter recently opening Chargrill’d Eatery in Belconnen. The “chicken shop with food” serves up everything, from cakes, coffees, breakfast, lunch and dinner, with something for everyone, including burgers, wraps,

pasta, Southern fried chicken and, of course, chargrilled chicken. Chris says businesses has been “very good” since opening, but COVID-19 has meant they “want to get a little busier”. Canberra’s Underground Spirits has unveiled a limited-edition pink gin in collaboration with this year’s Floriade festival. Photo: Mode Imagery.

Underground Spirits unveils Floriade-inspired pink gin Canberra’s own Underground Spirits has unveiled a new limitededition pink gin in collaboration

with the Territory’s annual flower festival, Floriade. The annual spring festival

will look a little different this year due to COVID-19, with flowers blooming around Canberra’s suburbs instead of Commonwealth Park, and has been dubbed ‘Floriade: Reimagined’. Underground Spirits CEO Claudia Roughley said everyone could use “a little reimagining” in 2020. “At Underground Spirits we’ve done a little reimagining of our own to bring you our blossoming pink gin,” she said. “This year has brought with it many challenges to the way we do things, and Floriade has been no exception. Inspired by Canberra’s reimagined celebration of spring, we have created a gin that invokes the vibrant colours and floral aromas that will erupt across Canberra during Floriade: Reimagined, when tulips bloom throughout Canberra’s suburbs.” She said the new gin has all the hallmarks and signature of Underground’s usual fare, just

“reimaGINed”. “Our creative process here, reimagined, led to the raspberries’ fresh colour and flavour being divided and then composed back together. Our core gin botanicals anchor the signature quality expected from Underground, and the zing of the finger limes are a pop of citrus for unwinding in the gardens across the capital this spring.” The gin is made from sustainably grown wheat grain and water from around the Canberra region, and features botanicals juniper, coriander, angelica and the native finger lime. This is the second gin created by Underground for Floriade, with the distillation of the Lakeside Gin for the festival in 2019. Order now via undergroundspirits. com.au. It will also be available from the Floriade: Reimagined online marketplace and select Canberra retailers from 12 September.

McNair performed her first gig since February back in August to kickstart the Canberra Theatre Link Bar Series as part of the live season finale of Chris Endrey’s The World From Here. “Everyone was just so excited to be at something again,” she said. While having that downtime over lockdown was tough for her – and certainly a shared experience for many in the arts - McNair said

she’s found a new appreciation for her craft coming out the other side. “When the first lockdown happened that was around (Melbourne International Comedy Festival) time, me and a bunch of other comedians had the next few months of our lives planned out. “It was really hard because we didn’t know when we’d be able to perform again, we’d been working toward it for so long. “To have it put on an indefinite pause, it was a pretty big hit for my mental health … I felt very directionless and flat,” she said. “Now I’m having so much more fun than I was while lockdown happened, I’m enjoying being on stage way more.” Since going on sale last week, tickets for That’s What She Said have sold out two shows, a reflection of Canberra’s voracious appetite for live performance. With local artists currently being given more opportunities to perform at premier venues like the Canberra Theatre, McNair said she hopes that audiences keep seeking out local artists once more established interstate and international acts are able to tour again. “Canberra has such a broad artistic community … I hope people remember to go and see local comedians and artists because there are so many great ones here. “Usually we see people when they have success, which comes after 15 or so years of performing … It’s kind of exciting to see people before they hit that point because you get to see them grow and evolve.” Alongside That’s What She Said, McNair, Ryan, Campbell, and fellow comic Agata Nabagło have started a new open mic room at Sideway Bar in Civic that runs every second Thursday. “We’re focused on being more inclusive open mic room where people from all walks of life can get up and come along,” she said. write the song lest reality unravels. Thrity years ago, we saw Bill and Ted arrive from the future with sons and launch into a rendition of Kiss’s God Gave Rock ‘n Roll to You which (presumably) united the world. We learn however that their offspring are grown-up daughters, that the performance didn’t quite work out, and that Bill and Ted have worked tirelessly since to crack the concept. With reality at stake, Bill and Ted travel to the future to get their song, while their daughters travel into the past to find the perfect bandmates for their fathers (retreading Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure).

While the world has changed since 1991, Bill and Ted mercifully haven’t. While the movie recaptures the spirit of the Bill & Ted franchise, it is surprisingly lacklustre and lumbering; our heroes merely appear in mildly amusing skits throughout. It is odd, given director Dean Parisot’s nostalgic, but fresh, sprightly and funny Galaxy Quest. Verdict: A dull re-tread of previous entries which is disappointing given the myriad of story options available via the time-travel/ dimension-hopping mechanics. 2.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

For Canberra comedian Frankie McNair performing as part of an all-star local female comedy showcase is a full circle experience for her, having been inspired to pursue stand-up by a similar event. Supplied image.

Female comedy showcase sells out Link Bar Canberra comedian Frankie McNair is one of five top-line local female stand-up comics set to take the Canberra Theatre’s Link Bar stage as part of the sold-out That’s What She Said this Friday 11 September. McNair told Canberra Weekly that performing as part of an all-female Canberra comedy line-up is something of a full circle experience for her. “The reason I started was because I saw a showcase of Canberra female comics at Melbourne Comedy Festival called Act Like a Lady,” she said. Chris Ryan, Sue Stanic, Tanya Losanno and Laura Campbell all accompany McNair on Friday

Now showing Bill & Ted Face the Music (PG) Via narration from Theadora ‘Thea’ Preston (Samara Weaving) and Wilhelmina ‘Billie’ Logan (Brigette Lundy-Paine), we learn that their fathers Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) have so far failed in their prophesied mission to write a song to unite the world. With time and space crumbling around them, a time-travelling guide (Kristen Schaal) takes them to the future where they are told they have less than two hours to 38

of Australia’s best music journalists and his biography of Paul Kelly, who Coupe also managed for many years, is a fascinating account of a remarkable singer, songwriter and author. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with Kelly’s friends, family and musical collaborators, Coupe paints a revealing picture of the musician’s life and his influence on Australian music. He also pays deserved attention to Kelly’s support of Indigenous causes and artists, such as Archie Roach, and gives a frank picture of his wilder early years and how he dealt with the excesses of rock and roll. An important and revealing book.

John Wood has been part of the Australian entertainment industry for over 40 years and has endeared himself to audiences through his roles on shows such as Rafferty’s Rules and Blue Heelers. In this self-effacing memoir, Wood not only discusses his experiences on television and in the theatre, but also his working-class upbringing in Melbourne. It is a pleasurable journey through his life, with interesting reflections on the acting business and gentle commentary on the people he has known. The best bits, however, are the stories of his early years doing odd jobs, including working in an abattoir and attending seances. A charming read.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Viking, $32.99

Popular British TV presenter Richard Osman has entered the world of crime fiction with his very engaging debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club. Set in a fictional ‘luxury retirement village’, it features four retirees who meet every Thursday to solve cold cases, until one day they find themselves involved with the very recent murder of a property developer. Written with a sharp eye for the idiosyncrasies of life and great compassion for the engaging central cast of retirees, this is a fun read that will make you smile often and even laugh out loud as the clever ‘whodunit’ plot gradually unfolds. The year’s most enjoyable mystery.

wellbeing

Dairy, soy, nut or none: which milk? Milk used to be just milk. Not only that, there was a time not that long ago when everyone agreed it was good for you! Now, we not only have so many varieties of milk, from full-fat dairy milk to skim, from A2 to lactose-free, we also have all the milk alternatives like soy, almond, oat, hemp and rice milk (and I’ve probably missed a few). Oh, the tyranny of choice!

What about dairy?

Humans are the only animal to drink the milk of another species. Indeed, most other animals are weaned off milk in infancy. But not us; whether we’re drowning our breakfast cereal in it or downing it with a flat white, dairy consumption is deeply ingrained in our national identity. Interestingly, only about 30% of the world’s adult population produce lactase, the enzyme needed to digest milk. Our milk drinking forebears came from parts of the world where cows were domesticated, including south west Asia and Europe. Lactose intolerance is relatively low in Caucasians at between seven and 20% but is very high (above 90%) in some Asian

populations where milk may cause bloating and stomach cramps – hence the lactose-free options. A2 milk contains lactose but it lacks a casein protein called A1 and has mostly the A2 form which is also true of human milk (along with sheep, goats, donkey, yak and buffalo). Anecdotal evidence suggests some people who can’t tolerate ‘normal’ A1 milk are able to drink A2 milk without any ill effects. Nutritionists have long heralded cow’s milk as a good source of protein and calcium, as well as B12 and iodine. There have been concerns raised about its saturated fat content, which is around 3.5% in full cream milk; however, some studies have suggested healthy adults need to drink high quantities, a litre or more a day, to cause issues. In any case, low-fat versions abound.

The alternatives

Soy milk is closest in nutritional profile to dairy milk as it is also a good source of protein; however, there is debate about how the quality of the protein content compares to dairy milk. Milk alternatives are usually fortified with

WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com

the nutrients that naturally occur in cow’s milk such as calcium, but we don’t know if the added vitamins and minerals in these products are able to be absorbed as well as those naturally occurring in dairy. So, you can’t assume nut milks, for instance, are a replacement for dairy milk, especially for children or the elderly who have a requirement for high quality protein for bone development.

Confused?

The bottom line is dairy milk can be a good source of nutrition if your body can tolerate it. However, if you think dairy milk might be causing some unwanted symptoms or you want to understand what options are best for you and your family, then I’d recommend speaking with an experienced dietitian or naturopath to give you advice that is relevant to your particular needs.

Floral fantasy WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

Not even COVID can stop Canberra’s annual Floriade festival. Be inspired by this celebration of spring and sprinkle a floral flavour throughout your home.

Petal perfection Pillow Talk flower buyer Jessica Wyatt says flower arrangements are emotive and bring feelings of joy and freshness to the home. “Artificial flowers are a low-maintenance, cost-effective alternative to fresh flowers,” Jessica says. “And they’re not restricted by seasonality or lifespan.” According to Jessica, the perfect flower arrangement can be achieved in three easy steps:

STEP 1 – THE VASE Think about the size and placement of your vase; these factors should influence the style, size and shape of your arrangement. How will it be seen? From 360-degrees on a coffee table, from one side only or front on? How tall and wide is your vase? The wider the vase, the more branches are required to create a full and complete look.

Camellia leaf waterproof stem $14.95 Pillow Talk

STEP 2 – THE HERO Pick your hero flower fi rst – one that draws you in and suits the overall look of your house. Add a complementary stem to work with the hero, without overpowering it. Try greenery or another flower. The fi nal touch adds the “wow factor” – consider flower buds for texture, branches to raise the height, or a hanging stem for shape.

STEP 3 - REFRESH Although artificial flowers last forever, don’t just set and forget. Renew your bouquet every season or two to keep your home feeling fresh. To get the most out of your arrangement, rotate it throughout the house and try variations including splitting the arrangement in two, then bend or cut the stems, place in a smaller vase – perfect for a bedside table. When you want to change things up, keep the greenery and add new flowers.

Veggie seedlings, which have been sown direct where they are to grow, will be thinned out and transplanted as required.

Tomato seedlings being transplanted into individual cells before being planted out once established.

Spring into veg this growing season Spring is upon us, and it’s time for veggie sowing and planting. Growing veggies from seed is worthwhile and satisfying and might help you find varieties not readily available elsewhere. Using seed you’ve collected means they are acclimatised to your local environment and budget friendly. Many crops, such as leafy greens and spring onions, can be sown directly where they are to grow. However, others such as eggplant, chillies, tomatoes, and capsicums, need to be started in a warm, frostfree environment before being

transplanted when the risk of frost has passed. Consider trying the following when sowing seed and transplanting seedlings: Use premium standard seed raising mix, which is specially formulated for germinating seed and promoting initial growth of seedlings. Reliable moisture is required for seed germination – too much and the seeds will rot, too little and they won’t develop. If you are using propagation houses, be mindful they are around

10 oC warmer than the outside air – therefore, once the temperature reaches 18 oC or more, it’s critical the vents be opened or lids removed to avoid burning your seedlings. Select a warm sunny spot to sow your seeds, such as a northfacing window indoors. Summer veggie varieties require a 20-28 oC soil temperature, to induce germination and healthy growth. Soil thermometers are readily available and a worthwhile investment – make sure it’s good quality. Try sitting your seedling trays on Styrofoam or similar to keep the soil warm and reflect nearby light. Alternatively, a range of heated propagation mats are available with grow lights with a timer to make things easier. If it isn’t practical to set up inside, you could use a cold frame in a sunny, protected spot outside. Cover with an old blanket, tarp, or bubble wrap at night for warmth. Freshly sown seed and young seedlings require constant monitoring, room, and food to grow into healthy plants. Thin out weak plants with manicure scissors, leaving the sturdy specimens for planting out when the time is right. When planting out, harden-off glasshouse grown/store bought

seedlings to reduce transplant shock. To begin with put seedlings in a protected sunny spot outside during the day and undercover at night. After several days leave them outside overnight unless frosty weather is expected. Ensure seedlings and planting site is moist the day before planting. If seedlings are in punnets and not individual cells when planting, separate carefully to minimise stress. Trim roots if necessary. Water in well with a gentle mist and apply a light covering of organic mulch. Plant tonics such as seaweed extract, comfrey tea, or weak compost tea, can help reduce transplant shock. Protect seedlings from snails and other predators especially when they’re young. Catch them when they are most active, in the evenings or first thing in the morning. Try placing open-bottomed pots on individual plants to give that extra level of protection. Check out your local nursery for advice and inspiration. Turn your iso-collection into a delightful display DIY queen Hayley Little shares her tips on turning a humble bookcase into a prime showcase in a few easy steps: • • • •

Make the most of your precious (and not so precious) items by mixing the aesthetic. Put quirky and functional items together to create a satisfying result worthy of showing off. Collect the books and items you want to display. Group them into categories: kids’ trophies,

photos, books, etc. Starting with books, place them horizontally or vertically depending on the size. Sometimes it’s nice to have books going either way for a bit of difference. If you are displaying vases, it’s time to add some greenery. If you don’t have a green

thumb you can opt for faux flowers. Add your photos, it makes every house a home. Choose special moments all the family are proud to have on display. For a final touch, add some treasures; it might be a box full of trinkets from your wedding or a special person.

high ceilings, ethanol fireplace and a floorplan that allows each bedroom to be separate from one another. “Two bedrooms are located on the first floor, both with ensuites,” O’Brien says. “There’s a large main bathroom and European-style laundry, and a sundrenched private front patio with a water feature and large remote-control awning.” The modern kitchen is a standout feature of the home, with large Caesarstone bench tops, double oven, Zip tap and mirrored splashbacks that reflect the light. O’Brien says the home boasts a north-facing living area, ducted heating and cooling, two interconnecting garages with internal access and resort-style plantation shutters. The location cannot be beat, either, just minutes from the Garran shops and oval, as well as the Canberra Hospital and Woden Town Centre. “There’s easy access to the City via Yamba Drive, and local schools in the area include Garran Primary School (two-minute walk), Canberra College and [the planned] CIT Woden.”

Weekly market wrap

Canberra asserts itself as the strongest market nationally Market conditions are a compelling proposition for potential vendors. Prospective buyers are competing for fewer opportunities, using their ability to access low cost debt to pay reasonably strong prices across all parts of the market. Domain’s weekly auction results show the last weekend Canberra’s auction clearance rate fell below 70% was 11 July. Since then, the auction clearance has reached or exceeded 80% on four occasions. Quantifying supply of stock, SQM Research found there was a 6.3% month-on-month drop in the number of properties for sale in Canberra during August. Year-on-year, the number of properties for sale fell from 4,399 to 3,902, or by 11.3%. Auction results show buyer demand has not proportionally adjusted, leading to increased competition and property values. CoreLogic’s Monthly Home Value Index found property values in Canberra have increased 6.9% during the last year for a total return of 12%. Over the last six months, Canberra has asserted itself as the strongest property market nationally, trailing

only Sydney in annual growth and total return. An extended lockdown in Melbourne has increased the likelihood of Canberra’s median property value overtaking Melbourne. An interesting data point in CoreLogic’s Monthly Home Value Index is similar growth rates for both house and unit values in August. During the previous quarter, house values increased by 1.3% and units 1%. In the off-plan market, surprisingly, there has not been a rush of new projects accelerated to market by developers seeking to take advantage of favourable pre-sale conditions. Throughout September and into early October is the ideal launch window for new projects to have sufficient time to achieve pre-sales prior to Christmas. This means it is highly likely we will see an increase in the number of new projects launching over the coming weeks. Since May, I have noticed a sense of urgency from buyers has been building momentum across the off-plan market. Sentiment was already improving prior to the announcement of Federal and ACT

Government incentives to purchase new dwellings, however, sentiment exponentially increased upon their announcement. For the last few years, buyers have been able to delay decisions without consequence, however, a lack of medium-density stock and apartment projects with clear points of difference are driving high volumes of enquiry. Last week, 34 groups of buyers secured new apartments and townhouses across the portfolio of projects I work on, exemplifying current conditions. In Canberra, behaviour does not correlate with the impending ‘fiscal cliff’ economists speak of. The strong economic composition of Canberra has historically shown property values have had incredibly high resilience to adverse market forces. Over time, the terminology ‘fiscal cliff’ or forecasting property values falling by 30% may be remembered as having an equally inconsequential impact on reality as the Y2K Bug.

Prince Harry is going to need to be more self-sufficient and prepared to grasp opportunities when they arise. The year ahead is when the universe will test his courage both on the personal front and in the professional arena. He will need to stand on his own two feet and be prepared to go it alone. This is an excellent time for him to explore different horizons. Healthwise, he must make time to rest!

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

With Mars retrograde from 9 September, there’s no point in expecting anything to run according to its usual routine as the planets are having a disruptive effect on your life. This would be an ideal time for marking time or simply resting, to help avoid any unnecessary upheaval.

On the work front, Murphy’s law is in operation so don’t expect to get very far with anything this week. You would also be wise to keep things to yourself and not to be too open about your plans until the time comes to speak out.

External circumstances could be creating issues between family members this week and the home environment might be full of conflicts. Forthright speech is acceptable in some situations, but this isn’t one of them. Be careful of making frank statements that border on tactlessness.

You might not realise it, but you can be quite argumentative; you may think that you have concealed your worries, but the tension could be getting to you. The root cause of your mood swings could be anxiety, which needs to be addressed before it affects your health.

This week does not look to be a very promising time on the professional front; there may be a dominating male energy to deal with and your relationships with more senior colleagues could be rather challenging. There will be extra challenges to face with meeting your targets.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Nothing and nobody is going to make things move any faster than they currently are. Although you will want colleagues to work harder and faster, they’ll be resistant to any urging on your part. The best thing to do is to work at your own pace and let them work at theirs.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

Mars is retrograde in Aries and there are bound to be lots of misunderstandings, making even the most innocent comment a minefield of misinformation and crossed purposes. It’ll be difficult to explain yourself clearly, especially when you start to get flashes of psychic awareness.

Health or legal matters may enter your private life either because you require these services or a loved one does. Your intuition is going to be rather strong and your hunches will be spot on! Financial matters that involve other people’s money will become important.

Whilst being fond of someone is one thing, letting your feelings become too intense is quite another. That’s what you need to combat at the moment. Try to keep a measure of common sense and you won’t go far wrong, but give into your impulses and you’ll find yourself in trouble.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Mars retrograde is testing your patience whilst you tolerantly wait for good times to return in November. This is time for reflection and retreat from the hurly-burly of life. Events seem to be in the hands of fate and it appears there’s not much you can do about that.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The focus is on your home and family. If there have been any issues there, this is a good time for sorting things out. But don’t expect to have it all your own way. Listen to others’ points of view and they will return the courtesy by listening to you.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Money flow will require a lot of effort and you are best advised to take a long range look at your current position and put a strategy into place. Expenses mount and, if you’re not careful, you might be forced to take loans to balance your budget.
