This week... With ACT school holidays starting this Friday, the decision by Queensland and SA to reopen their borders to ACT air travellers will be welcomed by many, especially those with loved ones interstate. For example, a colleague’s in-laws are keen to meet their new grandchild born during shutdowns; and I’ll be able to visit my parents in Cairns before Christmas. The Barossa, Clare Valley and Glenelg tram, jetty and beach are all looking attractive, as are BrisVegas, the Reef and the many charms of the Sunshine State. Meanwhile, the regular migration of Canberrans to the NSW South Coast is expected to be as strong as ever this spring, which will no doubt be welcomed by local businesses. If you’re looking to head in a different direction, regional NSW offers many gems – near and far – like the Snowy Valleys and Mountains, the Riverina, Central West and more. And for those of us taking a staycation, whether by choice or necessity, there’s lots to do in town. Visit canberraweekly.com.au/entertainment for ideas. Reasons to be grateful this past week include the CW team continuing to step up for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance this Steptember [donations gratefully accepted online at steptember.com.au], Sunday morning tea with a friend, double rainbows, and watching The Social Dilemma on Netflix. - Julie Samaras

news Airport operations ramp up as borders reopen Canberra Airport is planning to return to seven-days-a-week operation from Saturday 3 October to cater for the increase in demand amid the South Australian and Queensland borders reopening. Airport management welcomed the border announcements last week, which come as the business recovers from a 98% downturn in passengers since the beginning of COVID-19 restrictions in March. Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron said the business had responded to the announcements promptly, increasing and introducing flights for the two interstate travel bubbles. “Our airline partners have responded quickly, and you will see the doubling of services to Brisbane by the end of the week and, for the first time, Qantas will operate between Canberra and the Gold Coast with four flights a week,” he said. “We’ve already seen the positive

effects on the businesses at the airport – there was a buzz in the airport terminal this morning (21 September), and it was our busiest Monday for months.” Canberra Airport reduced to six days’ operation from 22 August due to lack of demand and had previously stated it needed domestic travel restarted from 1 October to avoid further shutdowns. The decisions to open Queensland and SA borders to ACT residents came within three days of each other last week. This week, the SA Government announced its borders would also reopen to NSW travellers from Thursday 24 September; while Queensland announced its borders would open to some northern NSW residents. While Canberra Airport may ask travellers for relevant documentation, Mr Byron said States and Territories would be enforcing their own restrictions. “All travellers will need to have

the required documentation and approvals before arriving at the airport,” he said. “Travellers may be prompted by airline staff for documentation, but ultimately each State and Territory will be checking travellers as they enter their jurisdiction. “If ACT residents are not sure about what documentation is required for Queensland and SA, please head to our website [canberraairport.com.au/covid-19latest-traveller-advice].” In response to demand, Canberra Airport will operate eight flights to Adelaide, 17 flights to Brisbane and seven flights to the Gold Coast per week. The airport is planning to launch new domestic destinations in the coming weeks and is in discussions with several airlines currently not in operation at Canberra Airport. Mr Byron said Tuesday’s news (22 September) would allow the airport to re-employ more staff,

although exact numbers could not be confirmed until next week. “The café will be able to open longer hours and re-employ more staff, the taxi and Uber drivers will be able to pick up more fares, and we will all be reconnecting more families, friends and enabling more face-to-face business meetings,” he said. Bungendore experiencing growing pains A unique green space slated for a carpark in the heart of Bungendore may have been given a reprieve – at least temporarily – while council, community action groups and environmental advocates attempt to find a compromise. The small regional town 15 minutes’ drive east of Canberra is under pressure to provide infrastructure for its growing population, which now stands at over 4,000 people, more than three times the 2011 census count of 1,316. The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) released a town planning document in July 2019 reporting an expected further growth to up to 12,000 people in Bungendore by 2048. Following the release of the planning document and exhibition of the proposed carpark design, council amended the concept to 8

include 71 car spaces, public toilets, and electric vehicle charging stations at the rear of properties fronting Ellendon Street, Malbon Street and Gibraltar Street. But the Bungendore Central Car Park Plan was met with fierce opposition from the Bungendore Climate Action Committee (BCAC) who have since garnered more than 800 signatures for their own “compromise plan” that calls for the carpark to be built on a “less historic” piece of land, right next door. Queanbeyan-Palerang Mayor Tim Overall said further representations from a wider cross-section of the community led to Council’s resolution to workshop more options. “The workshop was held [16 September] and staff will now submit a further report to a meeting of Council in October or November,” Mr Overall said.

BCAC member Judith Turley said she believed the group’s alternative proposal would meet the needs of community and business owners alike. Ms Turley said the problem for Bungendore was not too many vehicles, but too few visitors. “Visitor numbers have plummeted and there is very little for the drivethrough traffic or tourists to stop for. “At this point in time, the construction of a very large and expensive carpark is hard to justify both socially and economically.” Rather than a carpark, the group believes the space could be turned into an attractive central green sanctuary for special interest markets, functions and events, creating a destination for visitors and increasing visitor numbers. A local business survey found of the 32 affected businesses, 22 stated

they do not agree with the carpark plan in its current form. Ms Turley said the original justification for the size of the carpark was based on projected 20-year population growth and a supermarket in Gibraltar Street that will no longer be built. “If this landlocked parcel were purchased by Council, it would provide a perfect alternative to Council’s current Stage 1 carpark plan and would be wholly Council owned.” - Cassandra Power

cover story For many people in the ACT and surrounds, 2020 will be remembered as a time of struggle as the hazardous air from a stressful bushfire season had barely lifted before a once-in-acentury pandemic came along and induced economic uncertainty and life-altering restrictions. For Mental Health Awareness Month this October, Canberrans are being encouraged to tell their tales of survival and have meaningful conversations about their experiences with mental health symptoms over a cup of tea with their friends. Furthermore, the ACT’s Mental Health Coordinating Council (MHCC) is hosting a festival of more than 30 community events throughout the month. The festival is connected to World Mental Health Day (10 October), which is celebrated in more than 100 countries, promoting mental health as a normal part of life and raising

awareness of what mental health really looks like. MHCC spokesperson Alison Hall said the goal this October was to reduce stigma and normalise mental health by getting people talking, sharing and hearing stories. “Each year, one in five Australians experience a mental health issue,” Alison said. “We want people to know that mental health is a normal part of life. “We want to put people’s stories on your news feed.” Themed by conversation and connection, the vibrant festival is a celebration of artistic expressions of pain and healing, practical information about ongoing resources, and workshops in mindfulness and wellbeing. For people who’ve experienced stigma – the mark of associated disgrace from mental health

symptoms or shame, the humiliation or distress of inappropriate behaviour – this is a program designed to flip the script and celebrate their continued pathway to good health. Some events, including a stigmabusting video series on World Mental Health Day, will be conducted online. Festival highlights include: • Mums exercise group • The Man Walk with Vikings and Mengineering • Slow sewing techniques - to remain grounded • Nature walks • Positive post-its in the park • Coming Home – the launch of the online publication about the unique mental health concerns experienced by LGB, trans, queer and intersex people who identify as Bla(c)k and/or as a Person of Colour. • Mental Health Film Festival

news Queanbeyan gyms want to play by ACT rules Queanbeyan small business owner Pip De Vries said the arbitrary difference in health restrictions between Canberra and Queanbeyan has cost her F45 gym some loyal clients and has restricted her earning capacity, despite being a similar health risk. Typically, gyms in the F45 franchise have a capacity of 36 people per class, but while Canberra gyms surge ahead to a 100-person capacity when following the foursquare-metre rule, NSW gyms remain at a maximum of 20. Ms De Vries said her popular morning and evening classes fill up quickly and her clients, forced onto waitlists, take their business to gyms in neighbouring suburbs. “I don’t have a huge space, so I can’t run dual classes and 6am only happens once a day,” she said. “I can’t guarantee my clients

a place and quite rightly they get cranky and leave.” Ms De Vries was 34 weeks pregnant when COVID forced her to entirely transform her business model and go online. She said at the time what she really wanted to do was have a nap. When her gym reopened, her newborn was only two weeks old. “Maybe that’s why it feels so personal, it was time away from my baby and it makes me pretty angry.” Ms De Vries said general gym operations have changed so much since reopening and are now focused on COVID-safe practices. “How we operate is very different, there are different workouts and no touching or sharing equipment,” she said. “I can do that with more than 18 people. “We know how our gyms work; we’re not going back to how it was

done before. We know how to do it safely.” While Canberra gyms are gearing up and Ms De Vries’s revenue is down, her costs are on the rise. “I’m a bit stuffed when JobKeeper is over,” she said. “I have normal franchise fees, normal rent, wages and babysitting. There’s no end in sight and it just gets you down.” Ms De Vries reached out to the NSW Government for help but received no response. She has begun to coordinate with new federal member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain MP, who has been advocating for a “more localised” COVID-Safe plan for border towns. “People like Pip could open her gym in a sensible COVID-safe way but operate on a more level playing field with gyms in the ACT,” she said. “While we wait for a vaccine, we need a plan that supports

people’s lives and jobs; one that reflects relationships like the one between NSW and the ACT and one that recognises the reality people see and feel.” The COVID bump in Pip’s road has now steered her in a different career direction; she will soon return to teaching high school three days a week, whilst managing the gym and its administration. - Cassandra Power

The ACT Greens have promised to protect school students from heat and bushfire smoke in the classroom, announcing an election commitment to make all ACT schools smoke-free, temperature controlled and appropriately ventilated. The Greens say protecting schools from the effects of climate change and bushfires would require an audit of all existing schools, repairs and upgrades, as well as better planning for future schools. “This summer’s bushfires devastated our region, and the grey haze of bushfire smoke across our city won’t soon be forgotten,” said the party’s education spokesperson and candidate for Brindabella, Johnathan Davis. ACT Labor has also announced work to equip schools for future bushfire seasons, as a part of a promised $99 million infrastructure renewal program for public schools that would include upgrades to

heating and cooling. “One of the priorities for the program will be to improve the capability of schools to manage events like the bushfire season we’ve just experienced,” said Labor’s education spokesperson and candidate for Ginninderra, Yvette Berry. The Canberra Liberals have said they will prioritise upgrades for schools, including heating and cooling, after an audit of school buildings and facilities. The election announcements come as the ACT prepares for the upcoming 2020-21 bushfire season, which this year won’t start until 1 November, one month later than usual due to a wetter than average spring. The ACT Emergency Services Agency ESA said in a statement on Friday 19 September the upcoming bushfire season would look “very different” from the previous two, as predicted by the Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook.

Voting opens 28 September Voting in the 2020 ACT Election opens on Monday 28 September, ahead of the final day of voting on Saturday 17 October. This year, Elections ACT is encouraging Canberrans to vote early to avoid large crowds at polling places. “At this year’s election we have tripled the availability of early voting services and are encouraging everyone to vote early and vote safely,” said ACT Electoral Commissioner Damian Cantwell. “All enrolled Canberrans may cast a vote at any voting location

in the ACT, at any time during the three-week voting period – starting on Monday 28 September.” While recent legislative changes mean that it’s too late to update your details on the electoral roll before the election, eligible Canberrans who are yet to enrol are still able to do so, right up to, and on, the final day of voting. Mr Cantwell encouraged anyone who is not enrolled to do so online, however enrolling at the polling place is an option. For more information on polling places or to enrol to vote, visit elections.act.gov.au

Ginninderry releases 53 blocks Ginninderry has released 53 residential blocks of land at Strathnairn, the final release of land in the second stage of the development. The blocks in the release, known as Strathnairn Rise, will be “a great opportunity for buyers to become part of the Ginninderry

community”, according to project director Steve Harding. The blocks are between 455 and 1,275sqm in size and offer views to the Brindabellas. They are priced from $337,700 and will be sold via ballot. Registrations close 16 October with the block selection day to be held on 31 October.

news ACT Election 2020: The leaders speak Ahead of the 2020 ACT Election on 17 October, Canberra Weekly invited the leaders of the two major parties – ACT Labor’s Andrew Barr and Canberra Liberals’ Alistair Coe – to outline their policies. ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury has been invited to contribute next week. Op-ed by Andrew Barr, ACT Labor leader This year, our city has withstood blanketing smoke, bushfires and damaging hail. Now, we face a global pandemic and economic shock, the likes of which we have never before experienced. It has been an incredibly challenging time. The strength, resilience and compassion we have witnessed in our fellow Canberrans has been nothing short of remarkable. I have called Canberra home for more than 40 years, and I have never been prouder to be a Canberran. We know the pandemic is not over, and there has never been a more important time for Canberra to have an experienced and progressive Labor Government. From next week, Canberrans will be able to start voting in the 2020 ACT election.

If re-elected, one of my Government’s priorities will be to continue creating and protecting local jobs. Whether it’s in health, education, construction, hospitality, tourism, retail, transport, community services, manufacturing, or the public sector – our job will be to help protect local jobs. We have a comprehensive plan to grow our employment base from 230,000 to more than 250,000 local jobs by 2025. Our plan includes a $4 billion investment program to build the infrastructure our growing city needs, while keeping people in work. We will build Light Rail to Woden, supporting over 6,000 jobs. Over the past few months, we have seen how important it is to have a strong health system, staffed by dedicated nurses, doctors and health professionals. That’s why, if re-elected, we will employ 400

more healthcare workers to work in our expanded hospitals and our expanded nurse-led walk in health centres. We will also do more to ensure every public school is a great school, and every child has the right to reach their full potential. A re-elected Labor Government will employ over 400 teachers and education support staff at new and expanded schools across Canberra. Labor understands that taking action to respond to climate change makes environmental and economic sense. By making smart investments to lower emissions, we can create jobs and reduce power bills for Canberra households. A Labor Government will introduce a zerointerest loan scheme to help Canberra families meet the upfront costs of investing in rooftop solar panels, household battery storage and hot water heat pumps. We will also deliver a new food recycling scheme across the ACT, and transition our bus fleet to zero emission electric vehicles. We want to keep working every day to protect the health and livelihoods of our community. Now, more than ever, Canberrans need a government they can trust to protect local jobs and lead the Territory through these tough times.

news ACT Election 2020: The leaders speak Op-ed by Alistair Coe, Canberra Liberals leader This election is extremely close. Just a few hundred votes will decide between my vision for lower taxes and better services, or Labor’s continuing tax hikes and declining services. That’s why your choice could not be more important. We know that many Canberra households are reassessing their financial situation as they prepare to weather the economic storm from COVID-19. That’s why the Canberra Liberals have announced a series of real and practical solutions to put more money back in your pockets, while still delivering better services so everyone can get ahead. Our measures to reduce the cost of living will act as key stimulus measures to give struggling households a shot in the arm in the short-term, while lowering taxes and growing our local economy in the long-term. Our positive vision to make Canberra the best place to live, work and raise a family is based on that fundamental belief that all Canberrans matter and should be able to get ahead. That’s

18

canberraweekly.com.au

why we’ve committed to reducing the cost of living pressures by freezing rates for four years, saving Canberra households on average $1,500. Our rates freeze guarantee will also deliver relief to renters, as rates make up 20% of their rent. We’ll make owning a car more affordable by lowering the cost of car registration, in line with NSW levels, returning around $200 every year to the average Canberra family. We’ll also make it easier for parents to support their children’s participation in school sport and recreation with our annual $200 Active and Creative Kids vouchers for all students in Year 7–9. By ensuring more gap-free GP services across Canberra with a business assistance program, Canberra families can save on average $200 a year in local healthcare costs. And because we want to ensure every Canberran has the opportunities to work and live in Canberra, we will make Canberra the best place to do business to turbocharge our economy through the COVID-19 recovery. It’s these real and practical solutions that will

reduce pressures on Canberrans and return more than $1,000 per year back into their family budgets to use on the things that matter. Our holistic approach to stimulating household budgets will importantly help stimulate the local economy and help more Canberrans get ahead. By making Canberra more affordable, and encouraging more businesses to come and set up shop in Canberra, we can ensure that we deliver lower taxes and better services so everyone can get ahead. Our positive plan to bring down the cost of living will future-proof our city, reduce pressures on families and local business and help more Canberrans get ahead. Over the coming weeks as we release even more of our positive policies, we will prove that only a Canberra Liberals Government will deliver lower taxes and better services so everyone can get ahead.

sport Brumbies take out Super Rugby AU title Months of hard work and sacrifice by the entire Brumbies playing group and staff were validated last Saturday when they were crowned Super Rugby AU champions. The Canberra-based side defeated the Queensland Reds 28-23 in front of a sell-out 6,000-strong crowd at GIO Stadium to win their first title since 2004. The Brumbies led for most of the game and held out a surging Reds side who mounted a late comeback. Following two close tussles going the way of the Brumbies earlier in the season, the Reds dismantled the Brumbies 26-7 just a fortnight prior to the Super Rugby AU final, which made for a hotly contested decider. “For us to be able to get the last one, and the one that matters the most, was really pleasing for us,” Brumbies wing Tom Wright said. However, it’s straight back on the road for 13 of the Brumbies, who join the 44-man Wallabies squad for their upcoming test campaign. Four Brumbies uncapped for the Wallabies made the squad, including Wright, while another four with fewer than 10 caps also made the grade. The 23-year-old Wright said he was excited by

the opportunity before him to push his case for a Wallabies debut this year. “Obviously, it will be something new for me so I’m looking forward to the challenges of trying to get a jersey and getting to meet new people and training at the highest level,” Wright said. Wright has played 26 games for the Brumbies since being signed from the NRL’s Manly Sea Eagles in late 2018 on a two-season deal and had a break-out season this year on the wing. Following Saturday’s victory, Wright said the squad soaked up the win before he quickly recalibrated to focus on the international season ahead. “As a group we definitely got around each other and had a good time … opportunities don’t come around too often, so you’ve got to soak them in with the guys that you do it with.” After Sunday’s well-deserved celebrations, the Brumbies contingent of the Wallabies squad bussed to Cessnock, NSW to convene for a camp ahead of two Bledisloe Cup tests against New Zealand on 11 and 18 October. - Denholm Samaras

At a glance Raiders defeat Warriors The Canberra Raiders enjoyed a home win over the Warriors last weekend, in front of 6,000 fans at GIO Stadium Canberra. The side endured a frustrating first half as the New Zealand team came up with a 6-0 lead 10 minutes in. The Raiders were quick to hit back and retained the lead, settling for a 26-14 finish. Coach Ricky Stuart criticised the officiating post-match, but the win keeps the side’s top four hopes alive. The Green Machine face Cronulla Sharks at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday 26 September 5.30pm.

GIVIT donation of the week: Fish tank A local organisation that supports young people in various temporary/emergency care situations is looking for a fish tank to bring joy and discovery into their healing space. Many of the families who are supported through the organisation’s programs have experienced various traumas and challenging home environments. Having a fish tank in the main shared community lounge will bring a level of comfort and peace to the parents and children using the space. The fish will provide a safe way for all children to interact with a natural ecosystem and focus their attention on another living being. Any fish tanks in good condition which can be donated to this deserving organisation would be greatly appreciated. To donate, visit givit. org.au/donate-items, search by category “Fish Tank” to view requests located in your area. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange delivery. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

The latest in foodie news, events and products. From the backline to the vine Three of Australia’s celebrated Wallabies players have debuted their very own wine brand, Backline Wines. Canberra local Matt Giteau, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Drew Mitchell discovered their love for wine while playing rugby in France and partnered with winemaker Ben Riggs to create their latest drop, the Backline 295 McLaren Vale shiraz.

Full bodied and structured, the 295 shiraz joins Backline’s existing lineup of a 2018 shiraz, a cabernet blend and a rosé. The new addition is a tribute to the team’s rugby careers; the trio collectively played 295 games in the Wallabies’ backline, and only 1,063 bottles will be produced, the same number of points scored by Giteau, Ashley-Cooper and Mitchell in tests. Book talk

Jeff Popple reviews three suspenseful novels by Australian women authors. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Survivors by Jane Harper Macmillan, $32.99

Jane Harper, bestselling author of The Dry, shifts focus away from Australia’s sun-bleached interior to the rough windswept coast of Tasmania in The Survivors. Kieran Elliott returns to the small coastal community of Evelyn Bay with his young family to visit his mother and ailing father. Still haunted by the tragedy that claimed the life of his brother several years ago, Kieran finds that old wounds are re-opened when the body of a young woman is found on the beach. With consummate skill, Harper steadily builds the suspense to an unexpected climax, while also taking a sharp-eyed look at the intricacies of small communities and the enduring toll of guilt. Highly recommended.

The Good Teacher by Petronella McGovern

Now showing An American Pickle (PG) Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen) tells the story of how he met his spouse, Sarah Greenbaum (Sarah Snook), in their struggling Jewish village. In 1919, the duo emigrates to Brooklyn, where Herschel picks up work at a pickle factory. Soon, Herschel accidentally falls into a vat of pickles and awakens 100 years later! The movie is a fish-out-of-water premise akin to Encino Man and Blast from the Past. In this mould, the protagonist arrives in a strange environment which is used not only for humour, but to lay the ground for social commentary: reflecting on the dashed hopes of the past. The protagonist goes on to synergise his core ‘oldfashioned’ values and principles in-line with the strengths and positives of the environment

he finds himself in, where he ultimately grows and succeeds. An American Pickle surprisingly goes further in its social commentary, tackling the ‘American dream’ of commercialisation and competition, social media, cancel-culture and contemporary politics. The traditional Herschel meets his great-grandson, Ben (also played by Rogen), and is disappointed to find that he is not successful in the traditional sense (no faith or family), nor in the contemporary sense: a freelance app developer, Ben is stalling on the release of his ‘Boop Bop’ app. Instead of coming together, the duo sits stubbornly at odds: descending into sabotaging each other’s attempts at success. Verdict: A surprisingly biting, yet funny, contemporary social commentary. The movie shows us the pickle we are in, and a possible way out. 4.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Allen & Unwin, $29.99

Petronella McGovern made a promising debut with last year’s Six Minutes and has now followed it up with the dramatic The Good Teacher. Struggling with the demise of her 25-year marriage, Allison is the eponymous good teacher. Throwing her attention into her kindergarten class, Alison becomes caught up in the life of one of her charges, the terminally ill Gracie – with unexpected results. This is an emotionally charged and intriguing novel that goes down some unexpected paths. Jolting surprises and a strong cast of characters will keep you reading well into the night.

Cutting the Cord by Natasha Molt Impact Press, $29.99

Canberra author Natasha Molt makes a strong thriller debut with Cutting the Cord. Veering between Germany, Kangaroo Valley and Sydney, this is a quick-moving novel with an intriguing central character, Amira Knox. Trained as an assassin for a secret terrorist group led by her father, Amira begins to have doubts about the group’s purpose and her own identity. A search for her birth mother sets Amira on a deadly collision with her father and the rest of the group. Molt’s stripped-down narrative style propels the book along at a frenetic pace and it builds to a surprising conclusion and possible sequels. Good fun.

Showcasing Canberra through the eyes of a child in her latest book has been a dream come true for local author Jacqueline de Rose-Ahern, given she’s had plenty of first-hand experience lately with two young children. de Rose-Ahern’s new book Aussie Kids: Meet Matilda at the Festival was released at the start of the month as part of Penguin Books Australia’s Aussie Kids series. Penguin commissioned eight Australian authors from each state and territory to write books set in their state of origin for emerging readers aged six to eight years. “Canberra is known as meeting place and I wanted to showcase that in terms of how many people come to Canberra for work and leisure and the connections you can make,” she said. The book tells the story of its protagonist Matilda, who has to say goodbye to her friend Hansuke, who lives at the Japanese Embassy and will soon move home to Japan. de Rose-Ahern completed the book with local illustrator Tania McCartney and drew on her

the look the ‘controllables’. I know I can’t control a pandemic, but I can control my nutrition, movement and mindset … It’s been about keeping myself strong mentally and physically at a time when being healthy has never been more important.

Take 5: Tiff Hall CW takes five with Tiffiny Hall, founder of online health and fitness program, TIFFXO.com about how the pandemic has changed her routine and the future of workouts …

1

How have you maintained health and fitness during isolation? I’ve worked out at home using my online fitness program tiffxo.com. The workouts are fun, achievable and fast (only 20 minutes). I recently launched my ISO RESET challenge which I developed to help motivate myself and others. A

3

specific program designed to keep you fit and healthy in isolation; workouts you can do in your living room any time with just a pair or dumbbells or soup cans.

2

What’s been the most important aspect of this for you to focus on? For me it has been controlling

How have you warded off the dreaded ‘iso skin’? I haven’t. Gosh, my skin has been so congested and dry. I’ve taken a holistic approach of eating well, moving and sweating and then keeping my skincare super simple with a great cleanser and exfoliant to get rid of dead skin.

4

What is your most important skincare step? I think it’s drinking water. Water is the most important thing to keep your skin hydrated and feeling plump ... In addition to this is sunscreen. I use it all year round, regardless of season.

5

What are your top tips for those wanting to keep active but avoid the gym (and keep their distance from others)? Home workouts are the future. You can do it when it suits you between zoom calls, when kids are having nap time, before breakfast, you don’t even have to get dressed (I love doing TIFFXO in my pjs). You can also keep the routine and habit more consistent by taking out the time factors of worrying about showering at the gym, finding a carpark, squishing everything you own into a small locker, waiting for equipment to become available, sanitising equipment. wellbeing

Harnessing the energy of spring In Chinese medicine, each season has a corresponding emotion and organ system with which it is associated. The emotion accompanying spring is anger in all its various shades – including frustration, resentment and irritability – and the related organ system is the liver. Maybe it’s become amplified because of the year we’ve been having with COVID-19 (not to mention the bushfires and hailstorm), but I’m really noticing that this spring there seems to be more crankiness in the air! Spring in nature is a time of expansion and awakening, exemplified by the bare limbs of trees throughout Canberra bursting into blossom and leaf. Just as the sap rises in a tree, so too our vitality stirs in spring. You might be one of those hardy souls who braves dark and the cold to exercise all through winter but for the rest of us, as it warms up, we go outside more, we stretch and move, and our blood and lymphatics start to flush out toxins to be metabolised in the liver as well as the kidneys. Think of that expansive, uplifting, irrepressible vitality trapped in a cage and now you have a

metaphor for what happens when vitality is stifled and stuck. Your mood in spring is a useful barometer of your overall vitality. If you’re feeling extra cantankerous, like a bear that’s just been woken from hibernation, then it’s a clue that your liver is working overtime. Perhaps you’re also suffering with hayfever, headaches, skin breakouts or insomnia – all signs of a liver that is under the pump. No wonder you’re feeling tired and cranky! Luckily, it’s not too hard to help your liver out. Start with a clean-up of your diet, swapping out greasy takeaway or highly processed foods for fresh fruit and veges, lean protein and whole grains. Switch out alcohol and coffee with filtered water to give your system a breather. We not only digest food, we ‘digest’ all the events and experiences of our life, which is why prolonged stress can also impact the liver. To combat the build-up of tension, get your body moving more and loosen up those tight muscles with some stretches or a massage, or put on your favorite music and dance around the lounge

room. It’s hard to stay in a bad mood when you’re dancing! Finally, the energy of spring is one of growth and transformation. Vitality that becomes stuck leads to crankiness in the short term, but longer term will manifest as despondency or depression. You might consider what needs to change in your life to enable you to feel less stuck. Start with something small and achievable in an area of your life that you have control over and simply take action. With the irrepressible vitality of spring working like a breeze at your back, you may find you can achieve more than you think. Editor’s note: Our rotating wellbeing and fitness columns provide information that is general in nature. Please always refer to your preferred health professional for advice suited to your personal healthcare requirements.

It’s not too late to wrestle back control of 2020 with a vision board that invites positivity into your life.

Dream big these school holidays WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

It’s common practice at the beginning of each year to take a moment, take stock and set yourself new goals. But there’s no doubt 2020 has thrown a spanner in the works and you wouldn’t be alone if you’ve lost sight of some of your dreams. Take back control of your year these school holidays and get out the art supplies for a fun family activity – creating a vision board! More than just glitter and cardboard, vision boards are a collage of images and words representing your goals, intended to invite positivity, inspiration and motivation into your daily life. University of Canberra clinical psychologist Dr Vivienne Lewis said she uses vision boards in her private practice because they help her clients clearly see what is important to them, what they are working on, where they want to be in the future and reminds them of their achievements. “Vision boards boost their self-worth and using the sense of sight can trigger positive

feelings and hope for the future,” Dr Lewis said. “Which is particularly important during COVID.” Dr Lewis said a lot of her clients had lost sight of their goals in 2020 because it just hasn’t been what they thought. But whether the disruption was school, university, a gap year, employment or travel, it’s important to be reminded of what we still have. “Not everything has stopped,” Dr Lewis said. “We still have our family, our friends and our interests.” It might feel like the problems of 2020 are “grown-up problems” but people of all ages have been disrupted by COVID – including our kids. Dr Lewis said even though youngsters don’t necessarily understand what’s happened, they can feel that something is going on. “They can feel a sense of loss or loneliness and not understand why the avenues to see their friends have changed or why they can’t visit their interstate grandparents anymore,”

she said. “Making a vision board is a great thing to do with kids, it’s a fun activity and most kids love to draw pictures and cut them out of a magazine. “It’s also a good opportunity to explain some of the changes in our lives.” Steps • Create a list of goals. • Find pictures that represent those goals, using photographs, magazine cut-outs or print images from the web. • Make a collage on a bulletin board, wall or in a binder and include a picture of yourself in happy times. • Keep it neat and tidy so as not to invite chaos into your life. • Add motivational, affi rming or inspirational quotes that describe your feelings; you can write them yourself or go hunting for memes online. • Add glitter! I lied earlier; the glitter is very important.

Sustainable renovations Australian and New Zealand bathroom material suppliers Caroma say they have long been advocates for sustainable home luxury. Now, the inventors of the dualtoilet flush that saves Australia the amount of water under the Sydney Harbour Bridge every year, has partnered with environmental charity Bower Collective for a series of Facebook Live workshops on sustainable renovations. From its 1998 conception in inner west Sydney, Bower Collective has been on a mission to ‘leave the world a better place’ by rejecting waste as an inevitable consequence of consumption. Bower Collective’s Louise Grace said they were focused on supporting individuals on their journey to eliminating waste and ensuring their home was stocked with products good for people and the planet. Bower Collective takes in all sorts of waste and donations from households and industry for redistribution, holds electrical repair cafés, upcycling classes and advocates the ‘right to repair’,

meaning legislation would force manufacturers to make products repairable and be responsible for the product’s parts at its end-oflife. Avoiding unsustainable materials Louise said Australia has a “terrible throw away culture” and has lost the ability to repair items. Her advice was to stop waste before it starts. “The best thing is waste avoidance – don’t buy it; then try and reuse in its current form or upcycled; the last best option is recycling, but that is really downcycling because it requires a constant waste stream.” What to reuse Sustainable material options include timber, metal, fabric, leather furniture, homewares, bric-a-brac, artwork, gardening, building materials, corrugated iron, flooring, hardware, electronics and white goods. Louise said recycling centres and charities were worth checking out before you renovate because

The latest in news, trends and happenings for the home. Sleeping preferences poll Victory Blinds has conducted a poll of the sleeping habits and preferences of 2,000 Australian adults. Just 5% of people reported getting the full eight hours; the most common amount of sleep per night was five hours (44%), followed by six hours (23%) and 8% of respondents reported just four hours per night. Victory Blinds spokesperson Stuart Clark said the pressures of everyday made it difficult to get the recommended eight hours a night but making small changes 40

to your bedroom routine could help. “Avoiding caffeine after 12pm, taking a warm shower or bath before bed, and ensuring your bedroom is a comfortable temperature and dark enough to help you drift off can help in improving not only the length of your sleep, but also the quality.”

they often receive new building materials from worksite over supply, including boxes of tiles and marble counter tops. “We always have standard white wall and floor tiles, but sometimes we have splash backs and all sorts of interesting stuff. “We’ve seen people purchase an entire bathroom of tiles for $200 plus structural timber for shelves and beautiful reclaimed timber for their vanity.” Workshops for confidence Once you find your sustainable product, the Bower Collective will help to give you the skills to create your masterpiece. However, Coronavirus has caused a pivot from physical workshops and repair cafés to

in Dyson air purifiers, Dyson’s air quality backpack is a portable air sensing device which collects air pollution data on the move. With on-board sensors, a battery pack and GPS, Dyson hopes to use this sophisticated technology to offer insight into personal exposure to air pollution and how to avoid it.

Flora of Black Mountain Nature Reserve Eucalyptus polyanthemos (known as Red Box) is a dominant Canberra local along the steep northerly and exposed western slopes of Black Mountain. This hardy and versatile species of Eucalypt grows 6-20 metres high. Both juvenile and adult foliage is rounded and grey/blue to blue/green. The trunk, anywhere from smooth and blotchy to creamy-white, has pale grey-and-white bark that flakes off. It gets covered in white flowers during spring and early summer and is an important food and shelter source to beneficials, birds, and other wildlife. In fact, E. polyanthemos makes an outstanding and popular

variety of honey. It grows in a range of soil types and is drought and heat tolerant. Being an often-larger tree and known to drop the odd branch or two, it is best grown in open spaces such as parklands. Lomandra filiformis is known as Wattle Mat Rush and is a perennial grass (technically a herb) growing to 50cm high and forming clumps 20cm wide. It is widespread in eastern Australia and often occurs in open dry-sclerophyll forests. The foliage is greygreen, 3-5mm wide, and can be lightly weeping. It has three fine brown dots on the foliage tips. Bright cream to yellow ball-shaped flowers occur mostly

property news

Weekly market wrap Interest grows for investing in Canberra Exceptionally low interest rates and the strong local economy have led to a significant increase in the number of people considering investing in properties located in Canberra. Local and interstate investors are seeing opportunities to expand their portfolios and increase exposure to Canberra’s property market. Reflecting on the last six months and comparing the experience of most Canberrans with people living in other capital cities, it is easy to see the attractiveness of Canberra’s investment proposition. Vacancy is one of the biggest risks to investing in property. If an investor borrows money to fund the purchase, they require income to service the debt. In Canberra, rental vacancy is typically nominal, however, in May this year SQM Research reported it increased to 1.3% from 0.9% in March. All things considered, this was an exceptional result for those investing in Canberra. SQM Research has recently revealed the national residential rental vacancy rate recorded a decrease over the month of August, from 2.1%

in July to 2.0% in August. The total number of vacancies Australia-wide is now at 69,971 vacant residential properties. This time last year, the national vacancy rate was slightly higher at 2.2%. All capital cities recorded declines in vacancy rates over the month except for Melbourne, which again recorded an increase from 3.1% in July to 3.4% in August. There are now an extra 2,145 vacant properties in Melbourne as the stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown continues. Sydney currently still has the highest vacancy rate in the nation of 3.5%, having declined by 0.1% from July. Hobart’s vacancy rate is the lowest in the nation at 0.7%, with Canberra recording 0.8%. Louis Christopher, Managing Director of SQM Research, said “the shift towards regional living continues at pace, largely at the expense of higher inner-city rental vacancy rates”. “I suspect there will have to be a high point in this move soon. However, I also suspect there will be a degree of permanency with the massive population shift. Meanwhile Sydney

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

and Melbourne rents continue to fall, providing leasing opportunities for tenants who have chosen to stay in town.” SQM Research reported throughout 2020 gross rental yields in Canberra have reduced from 5.8% to 5.6% for units, however houses increased from 4% to 4.1%. Recently the growth rate of asking rents has shifted in favour of units, seeing asking rents increase by 1.6% during the last quarter to $474.30. Supply of new listings is down 11.3% yearon-year to August, minimising another risk for investors and posing a quandary: without an increase in supply, where do we house people once interstate and overseas migration resumes? Market dynamics for property investors appear quite favourable. Canberra’s occupancy rate is 99.2%, offering gross rental yields exceeding 4.1%, all whilst borrowers can secure debt at historically low levels.

Construction has officially commenced at The Griffin on Constitution Avenue, set to be Parkes’ only residential address. The development will comprise one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, available in a number of floor plans, across three buildings that will pay homage to their home within the Parliamentary Triangle. Architect and project director, Ewald de Weerd of DBI Design, said the development’s podium

gardens are “so large that we could have had another building in the space”. “Being over 1,000sqm, these gardens are a crucial part of our vision to celebrate space,” de Weerd said. “The Griffin is not your usual high-rise development. “We could have increased the number of homes but that was never our intention. We deliberately have maximised space, inside and out

A marriage of old and new Kingston 53 Leichhardt Street This charming cottage in the soughtafter Kingston heritage precinct has been “sympathetically extended to seamlessly combine the old with the new”, according to Cream Residential principal, Chris Wilson. 53 Leichhardt Street is home to a three-bedroom residence that’s bursting with nods to the home’s heritage, such as picture rails and fireplaces, as well as modern creature comforts like double glazing in the extension and ducted gas heating in the original part of the home. Wilson says this would be the perfect new home for anyone who is “after a central location, close to restaurants and the Kingston

waterfront, but not wanting body corporate”. The home sits opposite Kingston Oval, and close to shops at ‘old Kingston’ and the Kingston Foreshore. “[The home is] close to the Parliamentary Triangle, Manuka, and access roads to the City,” Wilson says, as well as “wellregarded public and private schools”. The home features solid timber flooring throughout, as well as plantation timber shutters, ceiling fans and built-in robes in the main bedroom. The modern bathroom boasts feature tiles and ample storage, while the kitchen features

stone benchtops, integrated dishwasher and a servery window to the family room. The cottage is nestled amongst gardens with sleeper-lined pathways and garden beds. A separate studio attached to the garage provides a flexible option, and can be used for a number of different purposes depending on your family’s needs.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Household expenses may go overboard and will have to be balanced with a good budget. Your patience is going to be tested and you will need to be extra careful whilst driving and when handling hot or sharp implements in the home to avoid accidents.

You need to pay attention to your health this week, otherwise chronic ailments could become worse and will require attention. A good fitness routine coupled with a healthy diet plan will help you to reduce health problems and maintain your wellbeing over the longer term.

This week, it’s more important than ever that you think before you act if you want to avoid trouble. However, if you have something niggling at you, don’t keep it to yourself because it will linger there possibly causing long-term resentment. Try to be both honest and tactful.

When you are trying so hard to be practical at work or to progress your career path, sentimentality has no place. The way you have done things in the past may no longer fit present needs, so it is time to accept change, no matter how disruptive it is.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

With so many planets in retrograde motion, the world will appear to slow down. A younger male relative could be a source of concern this week, especially as your intuition tells you that they are trying to shift their responsibilities or debts onto you.

If you have any type of legal matter on the go you will need to expect delays; on the positive side, the opposition will also be having issues of their own. It is important that extra time is taken to make sure everything is in order before you continue.

If you’re looking for a job or a promotion, you could be disappointed. Don’t take this too seriously; it may be that the people you have applied to could use you but at a later date, or it’s not the kind of role you’re best suited to anyway.

Other people’s tendency to drag their feet could be getting you down; on the other hand, you could be too impatient for your own good. Try to take it easy because one thing is certain… you can’t force the pace this week.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

Divorce settlements, property matters, wills and testate issues, or the ending of a business partnership will be the focus this month. There may be wrangles and tricky situations to navigate. Delays and restrictions caused by Mars square Saturn will drag out because this aspect lasts until 13 November.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Don’t make a martyr of yourself if you find people are unappreciative of your help. Instead make sure that you let them know you deserve to be treated much better. This is also a reminder that you need to acknowledge those who put themselves out on your behalf.

You won’t solve a cashflow problem by taking your anger out on people who are trying to help you solve it. Admit that the buck lies with you and you’ll be halfway to solving the issue. Approach the problem head-on and direct pent-up energy toward a good cause.

If you feel that something isn’t right on the home front and there have been too many issues brushed under the carpet, then it is time to speak up. Events could occur that might be painful but are needed so that you reassess and avoid making a major mistake.

While the country is flourishing with photographic studios, the practice of memorial portraiture - the portrait photography of the recently deceased - is on the wane. Renowned memorial photographer Brock Blennerhasset tries to revive his business after an accident, requiring the assistance of his estranged niece Nancy Vickers and his over enthusiastic new assistant Conall Molloy. After a rocky start, their working relationship begins to develop, but it appears someone more sinister is getting in on the death photography game. As the body count begins to escalate, they have to stop a murderer intent on ruining their business – and their lives.

ANTIQUE TILES My mother passed these tiles on to me two months before she died. They had belonged to her great aunt, who was very special to her as she was growing up. My mother carried these tiles from Malta with great care in her hand luggage. For me they represent a connection to the women in my family and to my cultural heritage.

My favourite things PAINTING BY DOREEN DICKSON My soulmate gifted this painting to me in 2013. It is by Walpiri artist, Doreen Dickson from the Sandy Creek region in the NT. It represents for me the power and beauty of First Nations culture which is not given the respect and recognition deserved.

Photo Kerrie Brewer

DEPRESSION GLASS Most of my Depression Glass collection was bought from op-shops in Wollongong during my first university degree. Depression Glass was mass-produced during the 1920s-1940s when people were struggling. I enjoy using these pieces and I love that they brought beauty and joy to many people during very difficult times and were a great example of early recycling of materials.

Jacqueline Agius

ACT Work Health and Safety Commissioner

- Libby Kimber

Jacqueline Agius is the ACT’s first female Work Health and Safety Commissioner, at the helm of the now independent WorkSafe ACT. She was appointed to the role in April, having previously worked as a teacher, lawyer and, most recently, for the Australian Education Union. Jacqueline says she wants to create opportunities for women in what has traditionally been a male-dominated space, and has plans to set up a WorkSafe ACT women’s committee and a cadetship for women to break into the industry. “I think for any woman coming into a male-dominated space there are challenges, but there’s also opportunity,” she says. Jacqueline moved to Canberra in 2009 and has been here ever since, enjoying reading, spending time with her family and connecting with the community through various pursuits including volunteering for Vinnies Night Patrol. “I love being involved in community,” she says, “community is really important to me”.

Sharing a great laugh with my partner, my kids, their partners, and my friends is one of my favourite things. I love seeing people having a great time. Steven Bradbury’s surprise Gold Medal win in speed skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics is my favourite sporting moment of all time. Still makes me laugh.

A GOOD BOOK Nothing beats relaxing on a porch with a cup of tea and a good book.
